Welcome . . . Welcome to the first edition of 'It's All About Boscombe', the new bi-monthly town magazine.

We would welcome any feedback, positive or negative, in order that we can always strive to make this a magazine of which the town can be proud of and a publication that reflects the thoughts of residents and traders alike.

I have lived in Boscombe for many years and have always been passionate about the town, its residents and traders.

Please feel free to contact me at my email address, helene@gazelledesign.co.uk with any news, information, events and general chit-chat, we’ll do our best to accommodate all relevant material in future issues.

Having for recent years been classed as Bournemouth's poorer suburb, Boscombe has gone unnoticed as the little gem it really is. The aim of our mag is to allow residents, and traders alike, the chance to shout out about what is a wonderfully diverse range of cultures, lifestyles and spirit. In our travels around Boscombe, whilst putting this edition together, we were lucky to meet such wonderful people, people who until now have had little recognition for their work. There are traders ~ some really colourful and quirky characters; Artists ~ with so much undiscovered talent; Community workers ~ battling every day to make the town a better place to live and work in, and, Volunteers who work tirelessly for no reward other than personal satisfaction at a job well done for the good of the town. We hope by publishing this mag that it will give a little insight into what life here is really like, open your eyes to some hidden gems and give Boscombe a feel good factor . . . please enjoy our mag ~ it’s your mag! Read it, use it and get involved in the town and what it has to offer . . . you'll be surprised what you may find . . . 'It's All About Boscombe'.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that has contributed to this launch issue, in particular, Dorset Police, Sean Gardiner, Hilary Leppard, Café Boscanova and The Cellar Bar, Bryn Jones and Carol Butler, whom without their help and support we may never have got this mag off the ground! Look out for the next issue at the beginning of December, it’ll be packed with all the info you need to assist with your Christmas present dilemmas and I’m sure there’ll be a few last minute bargains to be had!

Inspieration Service which The Friends of Boscombe Gardens successfully organise every year.

"The Friends of Boscombe Pier", known as "Inspieration", held their first public meeting in The Chine Hotel this September to outline their vision for a "pier of culture" as part of the regeneration of Boscombe beach front. The aim of the meeting was to encourage people to join so that they could have their say as to what they would like to see and hear on the pier. Inspieration was set up by local residents who felt passionate that Boscombe pier should attract local artists and attractions which mirrored the regeneration programme which Boscombe is currently undergoing. Future plans and ideas discussed at the well attended meeting suggested "jazz festivals, local artist exhibitions and painting competitions amongst local school children" to name but a few. Inspieration are currently trying to link up with The Friends of Boscombe Gardens in a joint venture to use the pier as a focal point for this year's Christmas Carol 6

If you’d like to be involved with Inspieration or would like any further information please contact : Inspieration c/o Suite 7 JWM 2 Lansdowne Crescent Bournemouth BH1 1SA E: admin@inspieration.org W: www.inspieration.org

Spotlight on . . . The Royal Arcade A truly inspiring experience . . . The Royal Arcade in Boscombe, a truly magnificent example of Victorian architecture, is one of Bournemouth's most recognisable landmarks. Designed by local architect, Archibald Beckett, the Arcade was completed in the late summer of 1892 and formally opened by the Duke of Connaught whilst he was on a visit to Bournemouth. As the Duke was directly related to the reigning monarch (Queen Victoria's third son) the Arcade is entitled to be known as the Royal Arcade. Completely enclosed and lit by electricity, the Arcade provided an all weather and all the year round promenade and shopping centre. Long before the days of chain stores and out of town complexes, the numerous shops, with the owners living above, created a vibrant and busy thoroughfare. The balcony-stage on the first floor level in the centre of the Arcade was a focal point for regular entertainments with concerts being given three times each day. Seats in the mall facing the balcony were available at a small charge and at an inaugural concert in 1893 a recital was given on a large three manual organ. How different to the piped music of today's shopping arcades ~ and how much nicer! The Royal Arcade was purchased in 1945 by Arnewood Estates, who are still the owners, followed in 1946 by the Boscombe Grand Theatre (now the Opera House) also designed by Archibald Beckett. 8

In 1989, a major refurbishment of the Arcade took place and, utilising the combined talents of an empathetic designer and the Local Authority listed building officers, the original Victorian features were highlighted and complemented. This magnificent building is still home to a wide range of independent shops providing the visitor with excellent and varied choices ~ a hairdresser, beauty salon, clothing for both men and women, bridal wear, lingerie, hats, handbags and shoes, watch and clock repairs, fair-trade gifts from around the world, candles, crystals and a tobacconist. Two excellent coffee shops, offering mid-morning coffee and cake, delightful lunches or, for a treat to remind you which county you are in, a Dorset Cream Tea, sustain the 'inner man'; the healing centre and The Tibet Culture Trust, with its spiritual library and selection of Tibetan artifacts, offer space for reflection. The Royal Arcade – a truly inspiring experience! Shop units within The Royal Arcade occasionally become available. Safer Neighbourhoods What is Safer Neighbourhoods? On 13 March 2008 Dorset Police announced the completion of the Force-wide rollout of Safer Neighbourhood Teams, a style of policing and partnership working that is benefiting everyone who lives in, works in and visits the county. Safer Neighbourhoods is a commitment by Dorset Police to improving the quality of life in our communities by working together with partner agencies ~ including the local authority, Dorset Fire and Rescue Service and housing associations ~ (through Bournemouth 2026) to tackle the issues identified by local people as those that matter most. Safer Neighbourhoods aims to provide our communities with: ◗ ACCESS to named officers and their community safety partners ◗ INFLUENCE over community safety priorities in their neighbourhood ◗ INTERVENTIONS through joint action with communities and partners to solve problems ◗ ANSWERS - long term solutions to problems, and feedback on the action that has been taken. Every neighbourhood in Dorset now has a Safer Neighbourhood Team. They are already engaging with communities to identify local community safety priorities and working together to achieve solutions to problems. 10

Safer Neighbourhood Teams provide a recognisable face in the community and are a vital component in achieving the Dorset Police vision of a Safer Dorset for You ~ a Dorset that is safer and feels safer.

How many Safer Neighbourhood Teams are there in East Bournemouth? There are three Safer Neighbourhood Teams in the East Bournemouth Section: ◗ East Cliff, Springbourne and Boscombe West ◗ Littledown and Boscombe East ◗ Southbourne

There are a number of opportunities that these teams provide, on an ongoing basis ~ including Safer Neighbourhood Meetings, Safer Neighbourhood Surgeries and Street Corner Meetings ~ for you to voice any issues you would like us to help tackle in your area such as anti-social behaviour, speeding and littering. This is your chance to influence the service that we, the police, and our partners, provide. Your opinions are important to us and this process will not work without you. Eco Warriors With the credit crunch biting a substantial hole in most people’s pockets it’s only sensible to try and stop money flying out of the window. We have some simple tips on to save money that really work. See how much you could save just by doing a few simple things! Lighting ◗ Try changing to energy saving lightbulbs ~ often thought of as expensive to buy ~ they can cut your lighting costs by 60% over their lifetime as they use 75% less electricity than standard bulbs! Just for example, a High Power 5W Warm White LED has an average Life of 50,000 hours, that’s a tad short of 6 years, and at approx £29 each it works out far cheaper than Halogen bulbs. Halogens cost approx £2 each with an average life of only 4,000 hours ~ that equates to having to replace them 13 times in the same period, that calculates to £26, then don’t forget the 75% extra it’ll cost you to run them!

Cooking

In the bathroom

Heating

◗ Old hat really, but showers take only half the water of baths ~ if you’ve got an electric shower, they can really chew up the power ~ only run it for as long as absolutely necessary.

◗ Did you know that by turning your thermostat down by 1 degree you can save 10% on your heating costs?

◗ Turn the thermostat down on your heated towel rail. 14

◗ Put lids on your saucepans ~ it’ll reduce cooking times and in turn save on the amount of time you need your hob switched on.

◗ Put up curtains ~ even if you already have blinds ~ it’ll save on any heat loss ~ just make sure they don’t cover any radiators:-)

Appliances

Washing

◗ Turn them off at the sockets when not required ~ leaving them plugged in still draws power ~ only a little ~ but it all mounts up when you consider the TVs, toaster, microwave, hairdryer, straightening irons, electric toothbrush, games console, DVD player, video, kettle, music system, ipod dock etc, etc, the list goes on and on.

◗ Washing clothes at 60 degrees uses 30% more energy than at 40 degrees as 90% of the energy used by a washing machine is used to heat the water. Save electricity by using full-loads, a half-load does not use half the energy or half the water.

◗ When you buy a new electrical appliance, get an .A. rated energy-efficient model, they cost less to run, save electricity, save you money and contribute less to climate change.

◗ Tumble dryers use lots of energy, even on stand-by, remember to switch off properly when not in use and save electricity. Whenever you can, hang up your clothes to dry naturally, turning off the tumble dryer is the 100% energy saving solution! In an ideal world . . .the most eco friendly shower!

Mobile Phones ◗ Many people are charging their mobiles overnight as advised by most mobile phone suppliers ~ most mobile batteries only require approx 1 hr to reach 90% charge ~ so hey, why pay for 8 hrs worth of electricity to get the extra 10%? ◗ So as not to have to charge your mobile every day why not try and conserve battery life, easily done by reducing the use of network applications such as web browsers, MMS client and email clients who need to frequently make GPRS connections to the network. Set your GPRS connections settings to “when needed” as opposed to the default “when available”, it’ll save valuable battery life. ◗ The biggest battery hog on your mobile is the backlight LCD ~ reduce the brightness and increase the contrast, also reduce the screensaver ‘timeout’ to reduce the amount of time the backlight is on. Food bites At Café Boscanova Canadian pancakes have been on the menu since they first opened. They are one of their most popular dishes. Pancakes are perfect for breakfast lunch or brunch. Boscanova serves pancakes for breakfast with butter and maple syrup or true Lumberjack style with a side of crispy bacon. They also have versions with chocolate chips, orange syrup, and whipped cream and a wheat-free version made with buckwheat and fresh blueberries. Supermarkets have started to carry expensive pancake mixes or worse still they sell pancakes already prepared in little plastic bags in the bread section. Pancakes are really easy to make and are a great weekend treat. Try making some at home.

Canadian Pancakes 200g self- raising flour 1tsp baking powder 1 egg Half pint of Soya milk A little vegetable oil for cooking Maple syrup to serve Butter to serve Method Mix together the flour and baking powder in a bowl. Beat the egg with the Soya milk and add to the mixture and mix until it forms a batter. Allow to rest for 5-10 minutes at room temperature, this allows the baking powder to start working. Heat a small amount of vegetable oil in a non stick pan (don't use olive oil or butter) 18

Drop large tablespoons of batter into the pan making several small rounds. Cook for a few minutes over medium heat until bubbles appear on the top of the pancakes This is a good time to add a few blueberries or chocolate chips. Turn the pancakes over and cook the other side. Serve with butter and maple syrup. For a real treat serve with whipped cream and dusted with icing sugar.

BosCrimbo ~ Competition It’s all about Boscombe is proud to announce the introduction of ‘BosCrimbo’, a new Christmas community event for residents and traders of Boscombe. We’d like everyone in Boscombe to contribute to conjuring up this year’s festive spirit and so we are inviting Shops, homes and offices throughout Boscombe to compete to find out who has the best Christmas decorations. We have a number of categories for people to enter into and it’s our intention to make this an event that anyone and everyone can get involved in. It’s not about how big and extravagant the display is, judging will be based on the most imaginative and creative ideas, there’s even a category for the most ‘eco friendly’’ display ~ perfect for making one extra use of all your recyclable waste! The only criteria is that the decorations must either be external or visible to onlookers (i.e a shop window). This is a chance for everyone to get creative and add some sparkle to Boscombe at Christmas, so, get your lights, baubles and tinsel out from storage and get to work making the most of your balcony, patio, garden, house front or shop window ~ judging of the shortlisted entries will take place the week before Christmas and the winner will be notified by the end of December. Judges will select a shortlist from the entries and will then visit the contenders during the week prior to Christmas to pick the lucky winner from each category, from those an overall Resident and Trader winner will be picked. 20

The overall winner from the Traders’ entries will receive a free quarter page advertisement in the February issue of this magazine. The overall winner from the Residents’ entries will receive a 2 course Lunch for 2 at Café Bosconova. Categories are as follows: For Traders 1. Shop front/window 2. Office exterior 3. Front of hotel 4. Eco friendly display

For Residents 1. Balcony/Patio 2. Garden 3. Front of house 4. Eco friendly display

Initial entries must be submitted to ‘It’s All About Boscombe’ by Friday December 12th ~ just take a photo of your decorations and either email it to: sarah@gazelledesign.co.uk or send it by post to: BosCrimbo, c/o Gazelle Design, 1a Burlington Mansions, Owls Road, Boscombe, Dorset BH5 1AP please be sure to tell us whether you are a trader or a residential entry and which category you would like to be entered into. Good luck! Terms and Conditions: This competition is being run by Gazelle Design. No cash alternatives. Competition closes midnight on Friday 12th December 2008. If there is any dispute with the rules or conditions of the competition no discussion will be entered into by Gazelle Design.

Town News Bournemouth has only one chance to get an ice rink into the town and it means that support from residents is being sought for Boscombe’s Kings Park scheme. A lack of support for the scheme would quash any further hope for a skating facility and residents only have a few weeks to register their opinions before the Council decides whether to go any further with the multi-million pound plans. The complex which would be run on a non-profit basis with no cost to the town’s taxpayers would include a full size Olympic ice rink with the addition of a dedicated curling area with 2,500 spectator seats, an indoor fivea-side football pitch and an outdoor all-weather pitch. The plan also outlines the intention of including in the proposed complex an indoor surfing facility complete with a standing surf wave rider, an outdoor archery centre, a mini-golf centre and a café and restaurant with views over the park. A Bosconian’s View by Lucy Parsons

Boscalicious, Boscanova, Bos Vegas . . . seems as if everyone has Boscombe Fever . . . and me, having been a resident for over 22 years, I now proudly refer to myself as a Bosconian. Over the years I have often had to bite my lip at various social gatherings when derogatory and sometimes damn right nasty things have been muttered when I say I'm from Boscombe (and when muttered over a Sunday dinner table I've found myself occasionally wishing the Brussels Sprouts cause them severe discomfort!). More often than not, the comments often seemed personal, as if no matter what I did or said it would not change their opinion of someone who chose to live in Boscombe ~ this made me mad, fuming in fact! All I want to say in response to all that negativity, is look . . . look at Boscombe now . . . to all of you that ever doubted my decision to stay here ~ I told you so! It has been blatantly obvious (to any true Bosconian) that Boscombe is on the up ~ now, I think we're on the brink of giving other shoreline towns a run for their money. Personally, I don't see the attraction of shelling out a few million on a property (in you know where) which will, if you listen to the experts talk about the effects of global warming, be engulfed by the swell of salt water. At least if you spend a million quid here (who would of thought it eh? . . A true Bosconian, that's who) you'll be guaranteed to stay warm and dry, well as long as you don't invite some good looking, tanned surfer dude, in a skin 22

tight wetsuit, wrapped around a six pack, donning a gorgeous smile and a dripping wet surfboard in to your home to see your etchings:-) With the long awaited revamp of Boscombe Pier complete (apart from deciding what to put on the end of it), the overhaul of Boscombe Chine Gardens (well worth a stroll through), the reef works well underway (in preparation for the arrival of those surfer dudes I mentioned earlier ~ girls and boys, concentrate) and the soon to be designer Surf Pods, the town in general has a lot to look forward to in the coming months and I for one can't wait! If we could all do what comes unnaturally to most English folk, and compliment and praise Boscombe for all that is good, quirky, and colourful. Boscombe is cramped full of extremely talented individuals in the world of art and music, it's the home of many wonderfully caring and hard working people who's mission it is to make our town a place to be proud of and it is now a newly revamped stage for us to create our own new image ~ a Pier of Culture, what I think will be the best stretch of beach front for day and nightlife, beautiful Gardens, Europe's very first surf reef and a town that is home to some of the nicest people!
