nd you will think you have arrived in olive heaven when you walk through the door at the Olive Cart in downtown South Haven. Owners Jeff McDonald and David Drees have compiled a superb selection of avored olive oils, balsamic vinegars, and olive products from Spain, Greece, Italy, and California, and encourage you to try before you buy at the store’s taste-testing bar, which features 65 avors! The Olive Cart is unique in that Michigan-grown products – herbs, spices, fruits, and vegetables – are used in creating avors. The squash used in the butternut squash-avored oil (a seasonal favorite) was grown by a local farmer; and the cherries and blueberries used in the avored oils, balsamics, and glazes were grown in the Traverse City area and on a farm in Grand Junction, just 20 miles down the road, respectively. And talk about keeping it local – area artists make a ďŹ ne selection of cruets, pottery, and glassware especially for the Olive Cart. Besides tasting, another really fun thing to do at the Olive Cart is to blend your own signature avor! Whether it’s to enhance a recipe or to just please your taste buds, the avor combinations are endless! The Olive Cart also carries chips, a selection of fancy olives, tapenades, glazes, scented olive oil soaps and lotions, and an award-winning mustard. You can even have stunning gourmet gift baskets made up for special occasions. xperience the rich maritime heritage of the Great Lakes at Michigan’s most distinguished institution of maritime research, preservation, and education – the Michigan Maritime Museum in South Haven. Here, you will ďŹ nd a variety of permanent and changing exhibits on Michigan maritime history, a center for the teaching of boat building and related maritime skills, a regionally-renowned research library, and the sloop Friends Good Will, an historic replica that sails the Great Lakes with a state-of-the-art, interactive, oating classroom. The museum’s newest on-water addition is the Lindy Lou, a river launch. The Lindy Lou is reminiscent of river launches built in the early 20th century that took passengers up stream to resorts and picnic grounds, or simply provided a pleasant way for families and couples to spend a lazy afternoon on the river. Opening May 4 at the museum is “War on the Great Lakes!â€? an exhibition marking the bicentennial year of the War of 1812. This two-year-long exhibit highlights the role the Great Lakes region played in the war. A lecture series, historic re-enactments, and more are planned. A second location – Clementine’s Too – sits on the banks of the St. Joseph River in St. Joseph and offers the same delicious menu items. welcome to
Saugatuck & Douglas R
ecently named one of the top ten “Coolest Small Towns in America” by the readers of Budget Travel magazine, Saugatuck is clearly the essence of cool. Its incomparable quality of life, lively arts scene, fabulous restaurants, and its closeness to nature earned the quaint harbor village this enviable distinction. For more than a century now, people have been drawn here by the area’s spectacular natural beauty – majestic sand dunes, white-sand beaches, and the expansive blue waters of Lake Michigan. Artists especially have found the area inspirational and they have built studios and established galleries that draw visitors from around the globe, earning the area the title of “Art Coast of Michigan.” The summer art school at Ox-bow, affiliated with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, is an institution here and offers artists the opportunity to learn, teach, and work on Ox-Bow’s historic campus. A walk along Saugatuck’s river-side boardwalk takes you past pleasure craft fishing boats, marinas, dockside shops, and a Victorian hand-cranked ferry that will transport you to Saugatuck’s world-renowned Oval Beach. Downtown Douglas has earned the reputation of being the place to shop for fine home decorating accessories – from hard-to-find antiques and custom hand-made pieces to the latest trends in home design. While in the area, you can golf, fish, take a boat cruise or art lessons, visit area museums, shop whimsical boutiques, or just sit back and relax with a good book on the beach.

augatuck Michigan has one of the oldest hand-cranked chain ferries in America. It operates only in the summer and takes visitors across the Kalamazoo River by an operator hand-cranking it along a chain that stretches across the river. Saugatuck has had a ferry crossing on the river since 1838 and it’s the last of its kind on the Great Lakes. Three pullies keep it in line as it is being pulled across the Kalamazoo River. This is an unusual operation to watch. When it is ready to cross the Kalamazoo River, the operator takes a can of compressed air and blows a very loud whistle (airhorn) alerting all boat trafďŹ c to stop. The operator turns a crank on the inside and this pulls the ferry along the chain. The ferry goes from downtown Saugatuck across the river and back.

ou can almost taste the warm summer sunshine and cool autumn breezes in the wines produced at Fenn Valley Vineyard & Wine Cellar. The lake-effect climate of nearby Lake Michigan allows Fenn Valley Vineyard to grow the cold tender European grape varieties that go into its great, award-winning wines. At the 2011 Michigan Wine & Spirits Competition, Fenn Valley brought home three gold medals: A Best in Class Double Gold for its 2010 Riesling, a Best in Class Gold for Capriccio, and a Gold for its 2009 Meritage. Twenty four judges from around the country judged 367 wines from 53 Michigan wineries. Open year-round, Fenn Valley offers wine tastings and vineyard and cellar tours. The annual Fenn Valley Wine Festival on June 23 is the official kick-off event for the summer season and offers wine tasting in the vineyards, live music, and delicious specialty foods. Crane’s Pie Pantry Restaurant and Bakery
C
rane’s Pie Pantry Restaurant and Bakery, nestled among lush, fruit-growing orchards in Fennville, has been a west Michigan tradition for four decades. Over the years, it has grown from serving fresh-pressed cider and slices of apple pie in a drafty orchard barn to offering a full super-sized menu that includes handcrafted soups, sandwiches made with homemade bread, fruit pies (their specialty!), desserts, fruit preserves, and fresh-pressed cider in a warm, antique-filled dining room. New this year on the menu are artisan cookies, which are made using local eggs, butter, flour, and sugar, just like all of Crane’s baked goods. Dine in, take out, it doesn’t matter. An expanded retail room makes it easier to shop for cakes, strudels, and pies to take home – both fresh and frozen – and that includes Crane’s award-winning apple pie. Join Crane’s this summer as it celebrates its 40th anniversary with “Free Movies in the Orchard.” Beginning in June and running through August, free movies will be shown at dark. Bring the kids, your lawn chairs or sleeping bags and blankets for spreading on the ground, and enjoy a family movie under the stars. Visit Crane’s Facebook page or its website at www.cranespiepantry.com for movie dates and titles, to sign up for monthly coupon specials, for hours of operation, and to see which fruits are ripe and being harvested. You can even order online for delivery right to your door. Or you can call (269) 561-2297.

on’t let the tulips, windmills, and wooden shoes fool you! Holland is an all-American city with a delightful Dutch accent! This charming city offers a taste of its European namesake with a historic windmill, acres of tulip gardens, old-world charm, and a friendly spirit. Founded by immigrants from the Netherlands more than a century and a half ago, the area’s architecture and ambiance is Dutch; but today, it’s thriving with a diversity of cultures and experiences. You can immerse yourself in Dutch culture at Windmill Island Gardens, and Nelis’ Dutch Village, or in area museums. Walk through acres of tulips, see an authentic 260+ year-old windmill, and watch the talented Dutch klompen dancers as they perform in colorful costumes and hand-carved wooden shoes. A visit to city museums offers a glimpse into the lives of the area’s earliest settlers. Holland’s award-winning downtown is both historic and hip with first-class shopping and dining experiences and festive happenings all summer long – street performers, concerts, and the farmers market – to name a few. A new addition to the downtown landscape is the sculpture, ZoondigeKwe: Strong Hearted Woman, by Jason Quigno, a member of the Anishinaabe Native American tribe. Carved from a 5,000-pound block of Indiana limestone, the sculpture of a woman with long flowing hair, was created for the 2010 ArtPrize competition in Grand Rapids. It can be seen adjacent to the kid-approved, Splash Pad. Be sure to make time to soak up some sun at the beach! One of Michigan’s most popular Lake Michigan beaches is located here at Holland State Park. For more information about Holland, visit www.holland.org or call the Holland Area Convention & Visitors Bureau at (800) 506-1299.

here’s an old saying, “Good things come in threes, like friends, dreams, and memories.” And it couldn’t be any truer than with 8th Street Grille, 84 East Food & Spirits, and Froggy’s in downtown Holland. More than 20 years ago, two friends got together with the dream of providing a good eating place where friends could gather and create special moments. Today, that dream of ‘a’ place has grown into three great restaurants that guarantee great service, the freshest food in town, and memories of good times. When you walk into 8th Street Grille check your cares at the door, sit back, relax, and enjoy great burgers, sandwiches, dinner entrées, salads, and Holland’s Best Soup Bar. The restaurant serves up a casual, family atmosphere and features daily and weekly specials, a full bar, and shakes and malts made the old fashioned way. Visit 8th Street Grille at 20 W. 8th Street in downtown Holland, online at www.8thstreetgrille.com, or call (616) 392-5888. 84 East Food & Spirits has been a downtown favorite since 1993. This casual, friendly gathering place is housed in an historic brownstone and serves a diverse menu of pastas, seafood, steaks, and designer pizzas, along with a great selection of sandwiches and salads, and a full bar. Try their “Famous Baked Spaghetti Pie” or one of the daily specials. Visit 84 East Food & Spirits at 84 E. 8th Street in downtown Holland, online at www.84east.com, or call (616) 396-8484. Dedicated to serving the highest quality burgers, hot dogs, and fresh fries available is Froggy’s. All of Froggy’s burgers are fresh, 100% Certified Black Angus patties cooked to order. They serve only 100% all-beef hot dogs and their homemade chili sauce is 100% meat – no fillers. And for dessert Froggy’s serves the “world’s best” hand-dipped premium ice cream bar. Premium vanilla ice cream is hand dipped in their secret milk chocolate recipe when you order it. Visit Froggy’s at 80 E. 8th Street in downtown Holland, online at www.froggysonline.com, or call (616) 546-3764. *All three restaurants buy from area farmers and food producers to help keep it local, and all three use Zoye oil, a 100% non-genetically modified soy oil that is locally grown and produced in nearby Zeeland. It contains no hydrogenation, no cholesterol, and no trans fats.

New Holland Brewing Company “ART IN FERMENTED FORM” Art: “The conscious use of skill and creative imagination especially in the production of aesthetic objects . . .” — Merriam-Webster Dictionary
O
nce you have observed the skill and tasted the creations of the brew masters and distillers at New Holland Brewing Company, you will understand why New Holland refers to its brews and spirits as “Art in Fermented Form.” While the colorful labels and catchy names on the outside of the bottle scream creativity, it’s what’s inside that is the work of art blended with a bit of science. Whether it’s New Holland’s “crown jewel,” Dragon’s Milk brew, or its Hatter Royale Hopquila, an innovative distilled creation steeped in hops, you’re sure to find a beverage to please your palate. Also a palate pleaser is the brewery’s New Holland Pub, which serves up great soups, salads, sandwiches, and pizzas with New Holland Brewing Company’s award-winning beers and spirits. Summer weekly specials include Burrito & Hoparita Night on Thursdays, the Backyard Beer & BBQ Dinner Series on Friday nights featuring a dinner special cooked on the outdoor grill, and the ever-popular make-your-own Bloody Mary Bar on Sundays. You can also enjoy dining outside on either of the pub’s front or back patios; and beginning in April, groove to live entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights. Want to see how New Holland makes its brews and spirits? Every Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., brewery tours are conducted. Cost is $10 per person and includes a tour of the Production Brewery, samples of beer, and a New Holland pint glass. Distillery tours are also available on Saturdays at 1:30 p.m. Cost is $5 per person and includes samples of New Holland spirits. Established in 1996, New Holland Brewing has grown from a two-man start-up into a thriving regional microbrewery that today distributes to restaurants, party stores, and supermarkets in 14 states. For more information about tours or special events, visit www.newhollandbrew.com or call (616) 355-6422.

What’s SUP? G
et on board, literally, the fastest growing water sport in America – stand-up paddling (SUP). First gaining its popularity in the Hawaiian Islands, the stand-up paddling wave has finally hit upon the shores of the Great Lakes State. And with more than 3,200 miles of Great Lakes coastline, more than 11,000 inland lakes, and thousands of miles of rivers and streams, Michigan is a perfect location for the sport. To get started you’ll need a board and a paddle. A stand-up paddle board is generally longer (10½-feet to 14-feet long) and wider than a traditional surfboard, and is designed specifically for stand-up paddling. The length you choose depends on your weight and the type of conditions you anticipate using it in – surfing, racing, or leisurely paddling along the lakeshore. The great thing about SUP is that you don’t have to stand up if you don’t want to; any combination of kneeling, sitting, or standing will give you a great experience out on the water. And unlike surfing, stand-up paddling doesn’t require wind and waves. Anywhere there is water you can use it! Frequently referred to as “walking on water,” SUP is fun and you get a great full-body, non-impact workout. Stop in at surf shops and outdoor outfitters to learn more about SUP, sign up for a lesson, or to rent or buy your own equipment and gear.

2012 Tulip Time - May 5 - 12 Now in its 83rd year, the 2012 Tulip Time Festival celebrates Holland’s Dutch heritage amidst a rainbow of millions of blooming tulips. The week-long display of pageantry includes parades, a Town Crier Competition, Dutch dancers, and spectacular fireworks. Entertainment headliners this year include The Oakridge Boys, Doug Gabriel and his Number One Hits Tribute Show, and The Second City’s Laugh Out Loud Tour. An arts and crafts fair, trolley tours, the Dutch Marktplaats, dinner shows, and a carnival round out the schedule of events.

Attractions
Windmill Island Gardens This beautiful oasis on the outskirts of downtown Holland is reminiscent of the old-world Netherlands. Windmill Island’s centuries-old working Dutch windmill, “De Zwaan,” is the star attraction, towering over 36 acres of manicured gardens, dikes, canals, and picnic areas. Each spring, more than 150,000 tulips bloom throughout the gardens, while other annual flowers and plants provide an explosion of color all summer long. Enjoy the performances of costumed Dutch dancers in wooden shoes, take a spin on the antique Dutch carousel, or stop by the Posthouse Museum, a replica of a 14th century wayside inn where you can view a presentation about windmills, the Netherlands, and “De Zwaan.” Windmill Island is open April 21 through October 13. For more information, visit www.windmillisland.org or call (616) 355-1030. Nelis’ Dutch Village “Experience a bit of Old Holland without leaving the States” at Nelis’ Dutch Village. Authentic Dutch architecture, flowering gardens, canals, windmills, and costumed interpreters demonstrate village life in this re-creation of a Dutch village from more than 100 years ago. Watch the costumed klompen dancers sway to Dutch folk music, listen to the music of Amsterdam street organs and the 25-bell carillon, sample Dutch food, visit the wooden shoe factory where you can see shoes carved by hand, and browse the village’s specialty shops filled with foods, gifts, and souvenirs imported from Holland. Kids will enjoy riding the restored antique carousel, sliding down the giant wooden shoe slide, feeding the farm animals, or taking a swing on the Zweefmolen – a giant Dutch swing ride. ighthouses. These historic, architectural wonders or their predecessors have guarded and guided Lake Michigan mariners for nearly 200 years. Their awesome presence bears witness to the rich maritime history of the state, add a grace note to our harbors and have become a symbol of our state. And although the technology keeps changing, most--now automated--continue to protect those who sail our waters. Some ask how long before future navigational systems will turn the tables and require those who love the Great Lakes and its majestic symbols to protect their former protectors.
St. Joseph North Pier Lighthouse A light station has been guiding mariners at St. Joseph for 177 years. The current light was built in 1907 and not only guides mariners on the lake, but also swimmers, sunbathers, and anglers on the beach. Its pier is accessible from the city’s Tiscornia Park--a great spot for strolling, fishing, and watching spectacular sunsets. South Haven Pier Light, South Haven Established in 1872, with the present tower first lit in 1903, this light is still operational. And although it is not open to the public, visitors can walk the pier to the base of tower, which is visible from downtown South Haven and its neighboring beaches. Directions: Take Phoenix Street (Exit 20). Stay on Phoenix Street after Business I-196 turns south; continue west to the beach.

Lakeshore Museum Center C
elebrating 75 years of bringing the best in natural and cultural history to the area, the Lakeshore Museum Center in Muskegon is featuring several special exhibitions this year. Opening in May and running through October is “From Sawdust to Symphonies” at the Hackley & Hume Historic Site. This exhibition will take you on a journey from the rough and ready sawmill days of the 1870s, through the lumber queen era of the 1890s, to the free-spirited fun of the 1930s. It tells the story of the area’s early entertainment offerings through photographs, sheet music, newspaper articles, playbills, and musical instruments. Opening June 7 and running through February 2013 is “Joel Beyrle: A Hero of Two Nations.” This exhibition is about Muskegon native, Joe Beyrle, who became a member of the elite 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division. During World War II he was captured by the Germans and held in POW camps. He escaped and eventually joined the Russian Army. He is the only known soldier who officially fought with both the American and Russian armed forces during WW II. This exhibit includes artifacts and photographs from Joe’s military career and a replica of a WW II aircraft. The Lakeshore Museum Center main museum is located at 430 W. Clay Avenue (admission is free). In addition to its special exhibitions, the center also offers continuing exhibits and hands-on galleries. The Hackley & Hume Historic Site, 484 W. Webster Avenue, features the restored homes of Muskegon’s most famous lumber barons, which were built in the late 1800s. The houses feature stained glass windows, lavish wood carvings, and period furnishings. Admission is charged for the Hackley and Hume site. The Scolnik House of the Depression Era, 504 W. Clay Avenue, tells the story of common families living in the area during depression years (free admission). Next door at the Fire Barn Museum, 510 W. Clay Avenue, you can learn about the lives of fire fighters in the late 1800s (free admission). The Lakeshore Museum Center is open seven days a week year-round. The three historic sites are open May through October, Wednesday through Sunday. For more information and hours of operation, visit www.lakeshoremuseum.org or call (231) 722-0278.
Great Lakes Naval Memorial & Museum W
alk where heroes once walked at the Great Lakes Naval Memorial & Museum in Muskegon. Here you can squeeze through the tight companionways of the highly-decorated USS Silversides submarine and walk on the deck of the US Coast Guard Cutter, McLane, a rare prohibition-era vessel, which served from 1927 until 1968. Selfguided tours give you an idea of what it was like to serve aboard these World War II-era vessels. The museum’s overnight encampments aboard the Silversides and McLane by families, youth, scout, and school groups are very popular and help bring history alive for campers. The Robert G. Morin facility of the Naval Museum features a wide range of exhibits and displays that focus on World War II, the Pearl Harbor attack, submarines, the USS Silversides’ incredible history, the Cold War, marine technology, and Great Lakes shipping. And don’t leave without visiting the gift shop to get souvenirs of your visit. Choose from a great selection of hats, shirts, pins, books, games, videos, toys, collectables, and other submarine, robotics, and armed services souvenirs. The gift shop also features a snack bar, which offers pop, chips, and homemade fudge. Each Memorial Day weekend, the Great Lakes Naval Memorial & Museum hosts the Lost Boat Ceremony. On May 27, tribute will be paid to the submarine servicemen who lost their lives during World War II. For more information about the Great Lakes Naval Memorial & Museum, special events, and hours of operation, visit www.silversidesmuseum. org, or call (231) 755-1230.

P.J. Hoffmaster State Park / Gillette Sand Dune Visitor Center Known throughout the Midwest for its outstanding interpretive programs and educational exhibits about Michigan’s sand dunes, considered among the most unique in the world, is the Gillette Sand Dune Visitor Center at P.J. Hoffmaster State Park. Here you can watch a multi-image slide show about the park’s dune ecological system and watch sand dunes being formed at an animation station. The Center also conducts a wide variety of nature programs for kids and adults, including Spring Blooms in the Dunes on May 5. Considered one of the most beautiful parks in Michigan, the 1,200-acre P. J. Hoffmaster State Park offers campers nearly 300 wooded campsites with modern facilities, three miles of pristine Lake Michigan beach, picnic areas, and a spectacular dune overlook. Nearly a dozen miles of hiking trails provide a great opportunity to see migrating song birds, butterflies, and other native wildlife. A motor vehicle permit is required for admission to the park. For more information or to make a camping reservation, visit www.michigan.gov/dnr. Muskegon State Park At Muskegon State Park just north of the city, you get two lakes for the price of one! This park has more than two miles of beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline and wooded dunes, as well as more than a mile of shoreline on Muskegon Lake. Both locations offer great beaches for sunning and swimming and modern campsites close enough to the water that you can fall asleep to the sound of waves washing up on the shore. Six trails provide a dozen miles for hiking and exploring. Also within the park is the Winter Sports Complex with the only wheeled luge track in North America. During the winter months, lugers fly down an icy track on sleds with runners. In the warm-weather months (weather permitting), the fiberglass track accommodates sleds with wheels, which means you don’t have to wait until the temperatures drop to try it. Summer luge hours are from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. For more information about the Winter Sports Complex and hours of operation, visit www.mssports.org. A motor vehicle permit is required for admission to the park. For more information about Muskegon State Park, visit www.michigan.gov/dnr.

ne of the prettiest lighthouses on the Great Lakes is the White River Light Station. Constructed in 1875 of Michigan limestone and brick, it marks the entrance to the White Lake Channel between White Lake and Lake Michigan. tep on board the brand new Idema Funicular (tram) at John Ball Zoo. Your destination? The Idema Forest Realm – an all new area of the zoo. The three-car funicular – the only one of its kind in Michigan – winds along a picturesque 900-foot-long railway taking approximately four minutes to reach the summit of the second highest ridge in Grand Rapids. Here you will find a new observation deck that offers spectacular views of the zoo and the stunning Grand Rapids skyline; a children’s play area; the new Bissell Tree House, a rental facility set among the trees for special events; and a nature walk into the zoo. Also new this year are convenient restrooms, a membership service center, and gift shop, which is more than four times the size of the old one and carries three times the amount of one-of-a-kind merchandise! The zoo also has recreation areas with picnic tables and grills, concession stands, a zip line, swan boat rides, and play areas for children. The more than 1,100 animals at John Ball Zoo represent the wilds of Africa, Asia, South America, Australia, and the United States.
