EVENTS 26 Garden Clubs 36 KCWC Christmas Luncheon Dear Friends and Neighbors, Our cover stories generally begin and end in Kerr County, so imagine our excitement when over a year ago, Jerry Reiner reserved the Jan/Feb 2013 issue to tell his hunting and ranching story. My dear friend and writer, Anne Schneider, and I were delighted to accept Jerry's invitation to his New Mexico ranch last October. Jerry —the consummate host—hauled us and his little Rosa around the rugged terrain in his big ole Ford truck, telling us the colorful history of the area and the ranch—we even learned a few things about hunting. It's a little trip Anne and I will remember fondly—out of our usual cover story routine. One of Jerry's cows (page 17) took a liking to me—following me closely— but Jerry convinced me that I just couldn't bring her home! In the above photo (taken by Anne), Jerry and I are standing by an old well, long ago filled in for safety, near the crumbling remains of an old rock ranch house (page 17). Thanks for the memories, Jerry. (Our only regret is that we didn't make it to the Wyoming and Colorado ranches!)

What is a

GUN TRUST?

The second amendment

to the United States Constitution gives us the right to bear arms in a wide category of weapons. Special category weapons such as short-barrelled rifles or shotguns, machine guns, suppressors or destructive devices may be legally possessed and transferred. However, unlike general firearms, these special category weapons are subject to and must be registered by an individual making, possessing, or transferring them under the provisions of the National Firearms Act (NFA of 1934), the Gun Control Act (GCA of 1968), and the Firearms Owners Protection Act (FOPA of 1986). Under the NFA’s definition of an “individual,” these special category weapons may be registered by a partnership, company, association, trust, estate, or corporation, and, of course, a natural person. To register or transfer one of these special category weapons, an “individual,” as previously defined, must file an application using the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms Explosives (BATFE) Form 1 for making a specialized weapon, or BATFE Form 4 for transferring such a weapon. Typically, the forms must be filed in duplicate and submitted with the applicable registration tax, two sets of fingerprints, and two photographs. When the defined “individual” is a natural person, the application requires the signature of a Chief Law Enforcement Officer (CLEO) in applicant’s jurisdiction. Unfortunately, the CLEO is not required to sign the application, and in many jurisdictions, the CLEO’s refusal to do so has created an impediment for many second amendment enthusiasts who want to possess or transfer these special category weapons. Under the current law, however, a partner-

ship, company, association, trust, estate, or corporation application does not require a CLEO signature. Almost all of the entities previously mentioned require significant start up and annual costs. The formation and operation of any one of these entities comes with a serious lack of privacy, except for a trust. To be more precise, a Gun Trust. The Gun Trust application is not required to submit fingerprints, photographs or a CLEO signature. There are many other opportunities and benefits of a properly drafted Gun Trust. There are also many provisions a Gun Trust should include for instance providing the trustee(s) the right to possess and use the weapons, without violating their obligations as trustees and fiduciaries and the ability for multiple people to use the weapon or weapons. A Gun Trust can be written to hold weapons or any other firearm as corpus of the trust until a named beneficiary reaches the age of legal possession or any legal age the trustee determines that should be applicable to that beneficiary. There are many other specialized provisions that should be and can be included within the provisions of a Gun Trust. If you recall, in a previous article, I discussed the possibility of a “dynasty trust” (a perpetual trust) in Texas. A Gun Trust could be drafted with “dynasty trust” provisions hopefully grandfathering in gun rights of future generations that may be adversely affected by future gun legislation that infringe upon our second amendment rights. A Gun Trust is a specialized trust that should be drafted for its full potential by a competent attorney. There are many federal and state firearm laws, both civil and criminal, that must be accounted for in drafting a Gun

Trust for the protection of the trustee(s) and the beneficiary(s). In all cases, you should avoid the temptation to use templates or forms without the advice of counsel. I recommend you hire an attorney who can take into consideration your individual and family needs along with the current laws, rules, and NFA regulations concerning the possession and transfer of any special category weapons as they may be regulated by any state or federal firearms law. Island Food Is

Chefreturns Dady

Are you dreaming

of slipping off for a tropical getaway, where you’re served luxurious cuisine as you sip the perfect wine? Now is your chance to enjoy that sensation without ever leaving town. Renowned San Antonio chef Jason Dady, owner of Bin 555 Restaurant and Wine Bar, Two Bros. Bar-B-Q Market, and two Tre Trattoria locations (one in Alamo Heights and the new location at the Fairmont Hotel), is ready to guide you on your journey to succulent island fare.

“Passport to World Cuisine” is the fifth annual fundraiser for the Dietert Center’s Meals on Wheels and other programs for seniors. Tina Woods, Dietert Center Executive Director, says the passport idea stems from the center’s travel program as well as from the variety of cuisine served at Chef Dady’s many restaurants. features a different motif, and this year’s theme is “Island Paradise Escape.” The “Passport” sets sail with a cooking class on Thursday, March 7, where a three-course chef’s tasting menu is prepared right in front of you. Knowledgeable and charming, Dady demonstrates food preparation in a classroom-style setting where it’s easy to see each step in the process. He explains in detail not only how to put the meal together, but also which ingredients and tools are best. After Dady finishes teaching each dish, it’s brought out for everyone to taste. Each course is paired with a wine that best matches the food. “It’s a fun party where you can learn a lot, regardless of your cooking skill level,” Woods says. It’s even more fun if you come with friends! As an added bonus, you’ll receive a cookbook with recipes for the evening’s dishes. The final destination in the “Passport to World Cuisine” is the Gala Dinner on Saturday, March 9. This lavish six-course feast features island cuisine, paired with wines.

a baskets which will be on display in the Dietert Center lobby by the first part of February. Raffle tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10. Chef Dady will provide a special basket containing ingredients and gadgets for making your own home culinary experiences truly spectacular. “This is a great opportunity for people to have a fun evening with fine dining, while helping seniors at the same time,” Woods says. Pat Hudgins, Meals on Wheels Coordinator, agrees. “The Dietert Center offers a variety of programs, but the biggest single program at deficit here is Meals on Wheels. We serve about 300 meals per day, and there is no waiting list.” Meals on Wheels is federally funded but is not just for the indigent. It’s for anyone who meets a set of requirements for being physically limited in what they can do. Seniors enjoy the food, social contact, and independence that Meals on Wheels provides. A survey shows 85% of recipients say that they’re able to maintain independence because of Meals on Wheels. “It enables a lot of people to stay where they want to be, right up to the end,” Hudgins says, “and that place is home.”

“This is not typical boring banquet food,” Woods says. “The food is the star.” You’ll enjoy amazing decor and a silent auction in addition to one of the most divine meals you’ll ever eat. You’ll have time to mingle with friends, and as the courses are served, Chef Dady will explain the flavor profile of the food and wine and will share upcoming trends in the world of food. Much like being on an island vacation, there’s no need for fussy formal wear for this night of gastronomic celebration. Dress is informal so you can relax and really enjoy yourself. Even those unable to attend the gala can still join the fun by purchasing a raffle ticket for one of many fabulous gift

Don’t miss out on your chance to help local seniors by attending your own “Island Paradise Escape.” Just be sure to get your tickets early, because these events sell out every time. haking hands with Summit Mountain Ranch President and CEO Jerry Reiner is the perfect introduction to the rugged New Mexican landscape where he spends much of his time on this division of his premium open-range hunting ranches. Reiner’s large hand wraps around yours—the same way the sweeping hills of cholla cactus and mesquite take a firm grip on your heart and just don’t let go. Standing over six feet tall in well-worn cowboy hat, chaps, and boots, Reiner echoes the scale of his surroundings. “This land reminds me of West Texas—a region I’ve always loved and where I had my first ranch for twenty-one years,” explains Reiner.

and the Trail Begins in New Mexico and Beyond It’s no wonder then that in 2008, after selling his Texas ranch in Pecos and Reeves Counties, Reiner invested in his current northeast New Mexico holdings that include federal, state, and private leases as well as five miles of Pecos River frontage. Hunting ranch operations began in September 2010, and a rustic stone ranch house with thirteen inch-thick walls provides comfortable on-site guest accommodations.

for endurance and speed,” Reiner claims with more than a hint of pride. “And she’s family.” Summit Mountain Ranch hunters in New Mexico can set their scopes on pronghorn antelope, mule deer, and Rocky Mountain Elk. Predator-tag hunts for bear and mountain lion add to the appeal of the region’s many wild-game opportunities. Reiner emphasizes, “Our ranches offer guests the unique challenge of hunting

understands the trophy hunting industry. He’s been there and done that and has an office full of awards, five of them from Safari Club International in 2011, and three more in 2012. “A successful hunt needs an experienced guide. Our guides are first rate and they work with our guests to secure the trophies of a lifetime,” asserts Reiner. “Thomas Neal Darnell is our Hunting Division Manager— he and guides Dominic Lerma and Joel Reiner harvested this magnificent Kudu in 2009 in South Africa. The kudu's horns are spectacular and can grow as long as 72 inches, making 2-1/2 graceful twists. These beautifully shaped horns have long been prized in Africa for use as musical instruments, honey containers and symbolic ritual objects.

“We’re working now to start an expansive lodge overlooking the River in Puerto de Luna Valley.” According to Reiner, the Tuscan/Santa Fe-styled facility will feature Ponderosa Pine posts across the open porch above the Pecos and artisan wood-crafted doors from Guadalajara. Future guests will be able to stay in the completed lodge for their exclusive hunting adventures.

A tour of the New Mexico Ranch by truck takes an entire day. “We run working cattle ranches with over 5,000 head of Brangus on two of Summit Mountain Ranch properties,” Reiner says of the holding company with over 150,000 acres available for fair-chase hunts in New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming. “And in Colorado, we grow our own alfalfa on the Ranch.” Reiner, a member of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, is a hands-on rancher who is as likely to be found doctoring a new calf as he is to be riding his buckskin.

indigenous animals in their natural environment.”

Three wildlife biologist-recommended areas around the New Mexico Ranch provide reliable year-round sources for water, protein, corn, and salt. Reiner concludes, “We have heavier animals with greater horn growth—real trophies.”

In 2011, Lane and Terri Arthur came from their Georgia home to hunt Summit Mountain Ranch in New Mexico. “My wife Terri and I have trophy hunted for years— Africa, Montana, Wyoming—under a lot of challenging conditions. At Jerry’s ranch in New Mexico, we were treated like a king and queen—and we’ve already booked another hunt with Summit Mountain for next November.” Terri adds, “As a female hunter, I appreciated being treated fairly and felt like I was part of the gang. At one point, Jerry talked me into taking a challenging 500-yard shot at a mule deer— and I made it! We had so much fun.”

. . . covering the wide ope The Rocky Mountain Elk is one of the largest species of deer in the world, and one of the largest land mammals in North America and eastern Asia. Reiner harvested this fine specimen in 2007 in Kerr County Texas.

Contributing to the excitement of wild game trophies is the New Mexican mystique of the Ranch—sloping alluvial fans and rocky terraces border broad basins and a riparian valley. Large cottonwoods, desert willows, and salt cedars thrive along the Pecos River headwaters, taking the rough edge off the panoramic vista. Occasional mesas punctuate the rugged setting where the ranch’s 4x4 trucks, Jeeps, and all terrain vehicles transport hunters on their quests.

Rich in History An integral part of the New Mexican ranch’s allure for both Reiner and his Summit Mountain guests is the colorful history of the territory. You can still find 10,000 year-old arrowheads in a State where space age missiles are tested. Pueblo people of the Southwest have lived in the same location longer than any other culture of the Nation. Gatherers and hunters have lived off the same land for centuries. In 1541, Coronado passed through the area in his search for the Seven Cities of Cibola and is said to have built the first bridge in New Mexico over the Pecos River. n spaces the narrow gap in the nearby mountains where he watched the moon rise and bathe the valley in moonlight. Residents still dwell in the old village of Puerto de Luna near the five miles of Pecos River frontage on the western edge of Summit Mountain Ranch. Originally the Guadalupe County Seat in the 1880s, only about 200 people now live in Puerto de Luna— many of them from original family settlers. Reiner says, “Besides being one of the oldest permanent settlements in New Mexico, Puerto de Luna is home to one of the oldest New Mexican Catholic churches.”

Steve Walker of Houston harvested this trophy mule deer in 2010 at Reiner's New Mexico ranch. Named for its large mulelike ears, the mule deer is indigenous to western North America. They can range from 3.0-3.5 feet tall at the shoulder, 4.5-7.0 feet long and have a tail that is 5.0-8.0 inches long.

And who wouldn’t enjoy the local lore about Billy the Kid? It’s rumored he was a frequent visitor to Puerto de Luna—eating his last Christmas dinner there on his way to the gallows in the custody of legendary lawman Pat Garrett. “And down there,” Reiner points in the distance to a tumbled-down shack on Ranch property along the Pecos, “is one of the sets left here from filming Return to Lonesome Dove.” Whatever the stories, imagine them told around a campfire under the New Mexico stars continue to next page after a successful day’s hunt.

. . . deep in the heart of Circle NA Ranch In 2012 Summit Mountain Ranch, Reiner and his wife Diane partnered with William and Diana Gauchat in the hunting operations of Circle NA Ranch-LLC in Comfort, Texas. The Reiners work with the 730-acre Circle NA Ranch to offer premier high-fence trophy hunting in the scenic Texas Hill Country. Diverse hunting packages are specifically outfitted to each hunter’s needs and assisted by an expert guide. As one of Texas’ foremost exotic and native game hunting ranches, Circle NA Ranch stocks over 30 premium exotic species from around the world in addition to prime native whitetail. Reiner concludes, “The best genetics on the ranch include red deer and whitetail deer.” Diane Reiner has created a true Hill Country retreat at Circle NA Ranch—her designer’s touch evident in the well-appointed lodge set in the rolling hills just 45 minutes from the San Antonio airport. The lodge’s large native stone fireplace is the centerpiece for an open-spaced trophy room arranged with comfortable furniture that invites guests to gather and relax. Diane’s decorating skills also ensure that the private rooms of the rustic-style bunkhouse offer guests all the amenities of home. Reiner adds, “Diane is Food and Beverage Director of both Circle NA and Summit

Mountain Ranches. She makes sure meals are part of the first-class experience.” Executive Chef Ryan Neville of the Culinary Institute in Austin, Texas, prepares the gourmet menus for Circle NA and Summit Mountain Ranches and is happy to accommodate special dietary needs. While nearby Kerrville and Fredericksburg offer Circle NA Ranch guests unique shopping and entertainment, women hunters and non-hunters can enjoy full spa packages at the neighboring Escondida Spa & Resort.

Home on the Range Reiner didn’t start out as a rancher or a hunting professional. Born in St. Louis, he migrated to Houston at the age of seventeen and lived there for thirty years. He first worked in manufacturing oilfield buildings and portable campsites. He later married wife Diane in Houston and from 1979 through the early ‘80s, Reiner worked in housing construction. In 1985, he started Ameriway Construction Company. “I built primarily in the Lake Conroe area and was the first to be in The Woodlands’ Grogan’s Point just north of Houston,” recalls Reiner. Drawn to the West Texas landscape, Reiner moved and bought his first ranch in Pecos and Reeves Counties in 1987. He continued to build homes and his last project in

Houston was a custom home in 1996. “By that time,” Reiner recollects, “I had found a way to combine my time ranching in West Texas and the construction business when I went into community development.” This has included Reiner’s West Texas work on numerous grant-funded projects and Main Street community-redevelopment programs. Reiner and wife Diane moved to Kerrville in 2005, and his Ameriway office is located on Water Street in the historic downtown district.

Help your hair Protect Your Ends.

GROW!

Never blow dry or use hot tools on your hair without applying a heat protecting serum first. Heat first sucks out moisture, then can burn the hair, causing it to break off. If you apply a serum, your natural moisture stays locked in and only excess serum will burn off.

of your hair and make you feel the need to shampoo. Using a natural bristle brush, brush from scalp to ends, distributing all the oils at the scalp down to your dry ends. This helps make your roots less oily, your ends less dry and less likely to break or split.

Cut Down on Shampooing.

Treat Your Hair.

This doesn’t mean don’t get it wet; go ahead and rinse well and then condition the ends. The point of not shampooing every day is so you don’t strip out the natural oils that keep your hair from getting dry and breaking.

Brush Your Hair Every Night.

This practice goes hand and hand with not washing. Natural oils accumulate at the root

Once a week give your hair a deep treatment. If your goal is to grow, the biggest thing to remember is moisture at the ends! If the ends don’t break, the hair gets longer. I like to use a nice oil, such as jojoba, almond, or coconut oil. After shampooing, towel dry and apply oil, mid shaft to ends. Twist hair up in a sleek bun or braid. Do the treatment before bed and rinse out in the morning.

Put Away the Scissors.

The best way to help your hair grow fast is don’t cut it. Trimming is only needed if you have extremely split ends that keep breaking further and further up the hair shaft. My advice is, get a good initial shaping so that the hair falls nicely as it grows. After that, only trim when you see several split ends. Happy Growing! BELLA LUZ

Who says men by Ode Young, MD and Kathy Simmons, RN, BSN

While the great majority of people who visit Bella Luz to get their glow on are women, we can buff and shine the men too!

Sometimes a man needs just a little pinch to get him in our door, and usually it’s the woman in his life who does the pinching. But once they get over the fear factor and see we aren’t going to bite them, they’re hooked.

Many of our first time male clients tell us they would have come to Bella sooner if only they would have known. To a man, the best possible treatment is when they feel relaxed and stress-free, and then they look in the mirror and say, “Wow!” Every man wants to be taken care of. Stress relief, pampering and rejuvenation are something everyone, including men, crave. Bella Luz gift certificates, perfect for birthdays, Valentine’s Day, or just because, are a big hit with men and can serve as that little pinch. Most women know what kind of magic we can do, but he may not. The majority of men’s skin complaints usually focus on oiliness or shaving irritations. But that often changes once they enter the quiet private room of the esthetician. In fact, male concerns— lines, aging, and loss of tone—sound curiously like female ones. BEFORE

Facial

The image modern men want to cultivate involves sophistication, strength, and stamina. Men with healthy skin appear more together, more contemporary, and more vibrant.

Don’t let him imagine a towel on his head, and cucumbers on his eyes! Think of a clean deeper than he’ll ever get with a bar of soap, a scrub to take off dead skin that can make him look ashen, a facial massage to relax him, and the right products to help him look healthier.

Massage

Athletes aren’t the only men who deserve a great rejuvenating massage; our therapists can target that shoulder, maybe that lower back, and he’ll leave feeling relaxed and revitalized.

Laser Hair Removal

The back of his neck? His back and shoulders? We can take care of unwanted hair practically anywhere, with safe laser treatments.

Botox

Lines and wrinkles? Yes, men get them too. Botox is perhaps the most popular cosmetic treatment in the country, and it works just as well for men as for women. It’s an effective way to reduce fine lines and wrinkles on the face and neck. Botox injections are given in the forehead (for horizontal lines), glabella (for frown lines), AFTER and the outer corner of the eyes (for crow’s feet). The treatment can also elevate the corners of the mouth, eliminate smoker lines around the lips, and reduce neck bands. The procedure only takes 10-15

In general, men should trade up to better products, perhaps beginning with a glycerin-based cleansing gel. Just by doing this, they will see a marked improvement in skin tone and texture within three weeks or less. Basic skin care for both men and women should be a lifelong habit. And, with good maintenance and a personalized skin care plan from the professionals at Bella, skin can look 5, 10, even 15 years younger. What man (or woman) would march away from that? Ode Young, MD, has been a physician for over twenty years with a concentration in aesthetic medicine for the past four and a half years. Want to make some changes in the new year?

Texans? by Skye Alexander

Don’t just write a list of resolutions, try feng shui. This ancient Chinese art is thousands of years old, but until recently few Americans knew about it. Its purpose is to create harmony and balance in your environment. Although feng shui (pronounced fung shway) employs numerous “cures” that may seem a bit like hocus-pocus to Westerners, much of what it recommends isn’t weird at all––it’s common sense. Good feng shui is good interior design. Feng shui practitioners believe that your home is a reflection of you. Conditions in your living space symbolize situations in your personal and/or professional life. If your home is cluttered, for example, you may be experiencing messiness or confusion in your life. Inadequate lighting suggests lack of vitality or enthusiasm. Doors that stick represent obstacles, frustrations, or stagnation. By making changes in your home, you can improve your career, relationships, or health.

Try these easy and inexpensive feng shui tips: • Reduce clutter. Get rid of things you aren’t using and organize the rest neatly. • Turn on the lights. When you shine light into dark places in your home, you brighten lackluster areas of your life. • Fix broken windows, dripping faucets, and doors that stick so they don’t hamper your well-being. • Position sofas and chairs so no one’s back is to the room’s entrance––then when you come into the room, you feel welcomed. • Keep walkways unobstructed so people––and positive energy––can move easily through your home. Although feng shui includes philosophical components as well as practical ones, you don’t have to understand them to reap benefits. Feng shui may seem strange at first, but once you start using it you’ll see how sensible and effective it really is. Skye Alexander has practiced feng shui for more than twenty years, and is the author of 10-Minute Feng Shui and 10-Minute Feng Shui Room-by-Room. She’s also written for numerous interior design magazines including Better Homes and Gardens, HOME, and Country Home.

Vintage for your home

It seems like everywhere I look I see the

word “vintage.” Though not one to usually jump on board something trendy, the vintage style is quickly becoming one of my favorites! It’s very comforting to be surrounded with the craftsmanship and memories of those who came before us. For one thing, they don’t make things with the care and quality like they used to. It’s also intriguing that these pieces have a past with so much history and we can still enjoy them.

Of course, new things are nice, but mixing a few vintage pieces can really add interest and character to your room. You may have a vintage or antique table, dresser or other piece that you inherited, or you might find something at a shop like Grand Wow’s that reminds you of a childhood memory. It doesn’t need to be valuable or a beautifully rendered collectible to have worth. It just needs to be something that speaks to you, for whatever reason. Mixing old and new creates a nice depth to your décor. Inevitably, it’s the older pieces that become the topic of conversation. It’s amazing how people gravitate to them and because they are worth displaying, people will automatically assume there is a story to be told. Personally, I enjoy having these pieces in my home because it reminds me that we don’t come out of a “box.” We all have a past and a future which allows us to express our individuality in our homes. Laura Garcia received her degree in Interior Design from Savannah College of Art & Design. Whether decorating with what you already have, new pieces, vintage or gently used furniture, Laura can help with your decorating. She is the owner of Grand Wows! furniture consignment in Ingram—a great place to find something to fit your personality. 3167 Junction Hwy, Ingram.

Getting Your

Grow On. Here we are in a brand new year, and it is time to get going outside. The time has come to make new decisions about what did and did not pan out quite the way it was suppose to. How long has it been since you had some good compost? Compost is a natural decomposed additive to everyone’s garden. It not only revives your soil by adding nutrients, it also helps builds that soil layer. Compost also helps retain moisture in your soil and stimulates microbial activity. By

adding compost to your soil you are already ahead in your growing plans.

Southern Living doesn’t always mean the southern Hill Country of Texas!

Stimulating your gardening soil with micro nutrients and trace elements is also very important. Liquid molasses stimulates microbial activity, green sand adds iron, and the different sands add trace elements. A great healthy new start for your soil is a good bet in the success you will have in the growing season ahead.

Trena Cullins, licensed Texas Master Certified Nursery Professional #4985, has been with the Plant Haus 2 for 15 years. The Plant Haus 2 staff has the knowledge to serve your gardening needs. Stop in to see them at 528 Jefferson, Kerrville. Call 830-792-4444 and remember, walk-ins are always welcome!

A word of caution for this year—garden catalogs are arriving soon in the mail— those wonderful pictures and the simple descriptions make it so tantalizing to purchase. Watch for your planting zones and whether that beauty will be heat tolerant.

Resolutions for the

New Year

Each January 1st, many of us set goals or resolutions for the upcoming year, hoping to break old habits and start the new year off on a healthier, more positive path. This year, in addition to my typical weight loss goals, I’m challenging myself, my friends and my family to make resolutions involving financial and legal health. I am going to begin by reviewing my estate planning. In the title company business, it is fairly common to receive a contract for a sale out of an estate. Those who have planned properly make the sale of real estate a much easier process for friends and family.

Estate Planning Suggestions

Will: Every adult should have a will, which determines how your assets and property will be divided at your death and who (the executor) will be responsible for distributing these assets. A will not only makes sense financially and legally, but it helps avoid painful family conflicts that often occur over assets when no will is in place. If you have a will, review it and determine if your selections are still valid based on age, health, financial circumstances and current relationships. Beneficiaries: Review all real estate, life insurance policies, and retirement accounts to make sure the named beneficiaries are an accurate reflection of your wishes. If you already have these essential estate planning documents, make a resolution to have them updated. If your marital status has changed since you last drafted these documents, or you have new children or grandchildren, or you’ve gained or lost significant property or assets, then you need to update these documents to reflect your current financial outlook and life situation.

Weather Feeding Birds’ days are shortened in winter. Since they sleep when it’s dark, they need to consume a lot of calories in limited daylight hours. With natural food sources depleted, they’ll be feeding more at your feeder stations. Needing more calories through fats and proteins to keep warm, suet is a natural choice to feed in winter. They also love suet during nesting season. Therefore, you can easily supply suet to your backyard birds almost all year round.

You may know suet as the white cakes that resemble bacon grease. It’s actually rendered beef fat. Here in the Hill Country, pure suet is something you would only feed during winter, as it would just melt like bacon grease in the spring and summer. The best choice for our area year round is no-melt suet dough that can tolerate our hot summers. However, there is a difference in suet and quality counts.

Suet comes in cakes which are easily dropped into a suet cage or tail prop feeder. These feeders would entice clinging birds like woodpeckers and nuthatches. But, it also comes in the form of nuggets. Nuggets can be dropped in most any other type of feeder—tube, hopper, tray or peanut feeders. Nuggets allow nonclinging birds to enjoy a fat-filled dining experience. This would include our beloved Cardinals. You may need to encourage your birds to eat suet because it is not like anything found in nature. If using suet for the first time, hang your feeder in a protected area like up on your porch. Place in your cake then take some natural peanut butter, spread it on the outside and press in some sunflower seeds. Birds will recognize the sunflower as a food source and this will get the activity started. Suet is a food source that can attract a wider variety of birds to your yard. You just may see birds you never even knew about!

Happy Birding! Kevin & Linda Pillow are the proud owners of Wilds Birds Unlimited Nature Shop located at 855 Junction Hwy in Kerrville. Each staff member is a Certified Bird Feeding Specialist and can help you discover a refuge in your own backyard. 830-895-7393.

LANDSCAPING AND GARDENING

by Zack Derese

The Outdoor Guy

“2012 has flown by like no other year I can remember!” Between moving our office to a location with more space, working on projects such as Peterson Plaza and The Commons Plaza at Schreiner University, having our fourth child (Gunner Quinn), and selling and buying another home . . . whewwww. It’s time to take a deep breath, take down the Christmas lights, throw away

the expired eggnog, and take stock of the year to come. Jan 1st is the time for New Year Resolutions, and Jan 5th is the time to break them. But hopefully these little resolutions will be easier to keep than losing 60 pounds or working out 5 times a day. Because you look good just the way you are—no really, you do.

A few New Year Resolutions for your outdoor spaces 1.

I will remove dead limbs and trim my shade trees. It’s always good to remove dead wood from trees, but this is the perfect time to “limb up” your trees. This will improve the canopy of the tree, improve air flow beneath the trees, and could improve your view.

5.

I will re-mulch my shrub beds. Not only does new mulch look nice, it conserves water by preventing evaporation, creates nutrients for the plants as it decomposes, and retards weed growth, which saves herbicide use and/or trips to the chiropractor!

2.

I will not cut my grass too short. When you adjust your lawn mower to a shorter setting, you’re robbing your lawn of its ability to produce sugar from photosynthesis, exposing sensitive root systems to excess sunlight, and allowing weeds to capture more sunlight and grow themselves. The grass must race to produce new blades using additional sugar reserves. Letting the grass grow long, then cutting it short can shock your lawn system. The clippings will be too thick to leave on your lawn, removing nutrients from the system. Dramatic cutting removes more of the leaf, leaving mostly bare stock. Thus, the plant is unable to produce extra shoots and brown patches are often the result. This, in turn, leads homeowners to think their lawns need more watering, a dangerous course of action for a lawn already weakened by shortened blades.

6.

I will plant a well adapted tree with a long life span. Trees can save on utility bills by shading your home, save on watering by shading the lawn, and add value to your home in years to come. Some examples are: Monterrey Oak, Chinese Pistache, Live Oak, Mexican Sycamore, and Bald Cypress.

7.

I will call Kerrville Landscaping to help me with these daunting tasks! Ok, ok, maybe I snuck up on you with that one. Most people can mow their own lawns or plant a few shrubs, but professional help should be called for with any major project—even if only for consultation. I know I have harped on it before, but planning and a working knowledge of plants, our climate, destructive animals, etc., are essential to a beautiful, functional landscape. We hope to be able to help with yours.

3.

4.

I will begin a master landscape plan. Even if it is only feasible to landscape in three, four, or even ten phases, having an ultimate goal will help you prioritize and keep you from “getting lost along the way.” I will convert some of my problematic lawn space into xeriscaped shrub beds. Xeriscaped does not necessarily mean white gravel and 3 cactus. Xeriscaping can be very lush, it is simply the rational and intelligent use of watering, utilizing native and well adapted plants.

Happy New Year! Zack Derese has deep roots in Kerrville. As owner of Kerrville Landscaping, Inc., he has been in the landscape business for over 15 years. He is a Landscape Designer, holds an Irrigation License (LI#9453), a Backflow Prevention License (BPAT #10754), is NCMA certified for Segmental Retaining Walls, and is a Water Feature Specialist. Hope for the New Year Peterson Regional Medical Center is always ready to offer our community the help and hope they need throughout the year. One of the most important gifts you can give yourself is an annual mammogram. Also consider saving the life of someone you know and love. Talk to a friend, co-worker, or neighbor and hand them this article about hope, healing, and health.

and every year

What is the Hope Fund?

Peterson’s Hope Fund pays for mammograms for uninsured women that cannot otherwise afford the procedure that screens for breast cancer. The fund was started by the auction of a beautiful quilt created by the Peterson hospital auxiliary. The volunteers offered the quilt for auction and the proceeds of that donation started the Hope Fund. Over the years, the Kerr County Women’s Executive Club has contributed to the fund. At the start of the year, the organization presented Peterson with a generous contribution of $2,000. In addition, employees from the Hill Country PRMC Marketing Director Lisa Winters accepting check from The Executive Women’s Club Telephone Cooperative raised money for the fund during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Many other organizations, supporters, and events have Women who have no symptoms and no known risks for added to this important fund. We can help! breast cancer should have regularly scheduled mammograms to help detect potential breast cancer at the earliest possible time. How to Apply Anyone seeking assistance from the Hope Fund should have a doctor-written order for a mammogram. To qualify, women must be uninsured. Upon eligibility, candidates will be issued a certificate for a mammogram that is good for 30 days.

What is a Mammogram?

A mammogram is an x-ray that allows a qualified specialist to examine the breast tissue for any suspicious areas. This painless procedure usually takes about 30 minutes and is highly recommended for: • Women 40 and older every 1 or 2 years • Women who are younger than 40 with risk factors for breast cancer 42 │ Jan-Feb 2013 │ KCP

Coughing? Congested? Miserable? Try nature’s medicine

Aromatherapy

by Skye Alexander

Many of us suffer from colds, flus, coughs, and other respiratory ailments during the winter season. Aromatherapy—the ancient art of healing with the essential oils of plants—offers a natural solution for discomfort in the head, sinuses, nasal passages, and lungs. When inhaled, these aromatic oils go to work immediately on the affected parts, providing gentle, soothing relief. Some people prefer essential oils to decongestants, shots, and other cold medicines, not only because they act quickly, but because they rarely cause unwanted side effects when used properly. Sensitive individuals in particular, including children and the elderly, can derive wonderful healing benefits from aromatherapy. Inhaling the crisp, stimulating scent of eucalyptus, spearmint, or peppermint helps relieve a stuffy nose and sinus congestion without drying out nasal passages or causing drowsiness. Frankincense, balsam, sweet marjoram, and lemon balm can also ease congestion, coughing, and

irritation in the head, nose, throat, and lungs. Pine, fennel, myrrh, and eucalyptus can aid bronchitis and sinusitis. Tea tree oil soothes sore throats and relieves cold sores in the mouth. Tea tree oil, peppermint, and eucalyptus are sometimes available in inhalant sticks, but you can simply sniff the fumes of these oils directly from an open bottle or put a few drops on a handkerchief. You can rub some aromatic salves directly on your chest to break up congestion. Be sure to dilute essential oils with grape seed, olive, or jojoba oil, rather than applying them full-strength, as some can cause skin irritation. (Make sure you read the label before using any essential oil.) Put several drops in a vaporizer or humidifier to fill your room with refreshing, healing scent. Or, add essential oils to bathwater and enjoy a soothing soak—you’ll feel better inside and out. Skye Alexander is the author of The Aromatherapy Card Deck and more than thirty books.
