I Will by Doyle Weaverr

A

will can be one of the most important documents you will ever sign. A valid will can be used to express your desires after your death, distribute your assets, and bring a sense of order and peace to grieving relatives. It is an opportunity you should not pass up because in the event you die without a valid will, the Texas Legislature has a statutory will waiting in the wings to distribute your assets as they see fit. Some people do not think they have enough property to be concerned about a will. This may be the fact in the present, but at anytime you could experience unexpected revenues. For instance, through some stroke of luck, you may win a lottery or receive an inheritance. On the unfortunate side of the coin, you could be the victim of a tragic event involving negligence by a third party. Available insurance in these types of cases may pay out significant funds to the survivor or to the estate of those who do not survive. There are other uses of a will other than distribution of property. A will can be used as a means for the deceased with surviving minor children to designate a guardian who will have control over the children and their property. This is better than forcing a court to choose someone you may not want to be in

control. A will can be used to set up trusts that only take effect upon your death. Probating a valid written will may be less expensive as compared to not having a will or even when a will is poorly worded. One of the most overlooked reasons for preparing a will is the ability to speak to your family after you are gone. A will can bring closure to your family’s grieving process. You can consult with an attorney about your particular family situation and the attorney can draft a will designed to eliminate potential after death conflicts between family members. An invalid will, a poorly drafted will, or no will at all can create some of the most contentious situations between surviving family members. Texas probate law is archaic and to the lay person very confusing. You may not like what happens to your family, children, and assets if you die without a valid will. Dying without a valid will may be more expensive for your estate, which may reduce the amount of wealth that can be transferred to your family. Without consulting an attorney, you may incorrectly assume a distribution will take place when in fact it might not. If you do not have a valid written will, upon your death, you have in fact made the decision to accept the distribution of assets designed by the State of Texas. Upon your death, your family and friends can always make arrange-

ments for the proper handling of your remains and any services associated with your burial or cremation. However, after your death no one can prepare your will. In fact, if you become incapacitated prior to your death, you will no longer be able to arrange for the orderly distribution of your estate. If you do not already have a valid written will or if your will needs to be updated, then, please commit now to taking care of this all important matter. Consult with your attorney. Ensure Plenty of Good Hair Days in 2012 by Katie Kleespies

Sure

it’s easy to lose track of the time between haircuts, but regular trims are the easiest and most cost effective way to keep hair looking fresh and fit. If it’s a challenge to make those appointments, remember that most stylists will prebook while you’re in their chair—you can schedule your next appointment then and there and cross it off your to do list. Another idea? Book all of your appointments for a full year so you’ll get the days and time slots that you prefer! When it comes to your hair color, the key words to keep in mind are preserve and protect. Consider: you designate a

12 │Jan-Feb 2012 │ KCP

substantial portion of your annual beauty budget to that glossy, gray-busting chestnut hue or those gorgeous highlights, and it’s worth every penny! So why not ensure you’re maximizing that investment with the best possible care at home? The best bets are shampoos, conditioners and stylers that are formulated specifically for color treated hair. With regular use, your color will last longer and look shinier, more vibrant and feel healthier. Are your strands hungry? Thirsty? Both? Different hair types need different solutions. If hair is dull, dry and lackluster, it requires moisture. If it’s brittle, over-processed and prone to breakage, nourishment is

indicated. Satisfy thirsty tresses with a rich moisturizing shampoo, conditioner and serum. When it comes to restoring maximum hair health, nothing feeds and strengthens strands like a deep-penetrating reconstructor. Unleash that default ponytail. Explore the wonders of smooth hair. If your strands are straight, give curls a whirl. Changing up your ‘do is easy, cheaper than Botox and commitment free—if you don’t like it, just wash that style right out of your hair! Solar Systems Off-Grid vs. Grid-Tied

When

someone mentions living off the grid, what do you picture? Most people see a remote location, with a small, ultraefficient house, and no one else around for miles. This is one of the examples of how off-grid home solar systems are used—as a way to generate power for those who live in an area where no power lines exist. As the world’s population grows, however, it’s increasingly hard to find a place to live where power lines haven’t already been installed. Additionally, there are millions of people living in cities around the world that want to experiment with off-grid living without moving out of the urban areas they know and love.

associated costs, a lack of power if there’s no sun for more than a few days, and no emergency power if inclement weather were to damage or destroy a vital component of your system.

Grid-Tied Home Solar Systems

A grid-tied home solar system means that solar power is your default power source, but the home is still connected to a municipal power supply. • Advantages of a grid-tied solar system include the flexibility that comes from having a secure source of backup power. Excess power generated by home solar system can be fed back into the grid, and with net metering you can receive credits from your utility company for that power. If, during an emergency or inclement weather, you need to draw on grid-based electricity, the cost is lowered as a result or may even be free. • Disadvantages of a grid-tied system are the need to live close to power transmission lines and no emergency power during power interruptions from the utility company. Contact Hardin Heating and Cooling for more information regarding solar systems and with help deciding which system is right for you.

Luckily, it is still possible to generate your own electricity whether you live in the middle of town, or the middle of nowhere. To decide which is better for you, it’s essential to know the difference between off-grid and grid-tied home solar systems. Each has its own benefits and challenges, but both will help reduce your energy costs and improve the environment.

Off-Grid Home Solar Systems

An off-grid solar system means that you are 100 percent reliant on the power generated by your own solar panels. • Advantages of an off-grid solar system include lack of electricity bills, freedom from rate hikes, and the knowledge that you’ll be able to enjoy power in most emergency situations. • Disadvantages of an off-grid solar system include the need for large battery storage banks, high maintenance time and Nov-Dec 2012 2011 ││ KCP KCP 14 │Jan-Feb

Protect your investment with a Wood Destroying Insect Report? Wood Destroying Insect Reports, more commonly referred to by real estate professionals as WDI’s, are detailed reports that inspect for existing or potential threats of wood destroying insects to the property before you buy it. For many homeowners, this can mean the difference between buying their dream home and buying their own private nightmare of massive repair bills!

Insects included in the report: • Termites • Carpenter Ants • Wood Boring Beetles • Wood Boring Bees

What does "conducive conditions" mean?

Why get a WDI?

WDI’s are required by many mortgage lenders and are a wise investment for any potential home buyer. Many real estate professionals in the Texas Hill Country are respectably encouraging their clients to have a WDI Report done. This way, buyers will be aware of any conducive conditions or existing structural problems caused by termites and other insects prior to the purchase of the home.

“Hill Country Family Owned Professional Income Tax Preparation”

Any structure containing wood or cellulose materials provides a natural food source for wood destroying insects.Conducive conditions means that there is an increased likelihood that your property is susceptible to an infestation. Look for these signs: • Soil to wood contact • Firewood stacked against foundation. • Wood mulch (within three feet of foundation) • Faulty grade • Wood debris in crawl space • Moisture • Insufficient ventilation

What if the home has termites?

If the inspection finds signs of subterranean termites, the report will note the visible area of infestation and proper control measures to be performed will be noted. Goss Pest Control will then give you written bid with a graph detailing and advising the proper control measures to be performed. After the treatment has been performed we will issue another report showing that proper control measures have been performed. A One-Year Re-Treat guarantee will be provided. In most cases, the guarantee can be renewable.

in the Hill Country and it’s the perfect time to relax after the holidays and enjoy your backyard birds. As we slow down, the birds get active. As most sources of natural food have been depleted, you can provide them with plenty of food options.

Birds are in need of extra protein and fat in order to keep warm, especially overnight. If possible, fill your feeders in the late afternoon so the birds can feast before nightfall and again in the morning.

It's almost Spring Planting Time

Most backyard birds will appreciate a high calorie food like black oil sunflower seeds, along with high fat suet and peanuts. Using a large capacity feeder will allow you to make fewer trips to the feeder when it’s cold outside. Black oil sunflower should be at least half of your mix during the winter months. Millet is a good choice to add to your mix as it will be knocked out of an elevated feeder to the ground where juncos and a variety of good sparrows will enjoy it. Don’t forget your goldfinches! They will be out in force, devouring your Nyjer seed, causing a finch frenzy.

Suet is a must have at your feeder station during the cold months. It is the easiest way to increase the variety of birds visiting your feeder station. Suet gives birds an extra boost of energy to keep warm. Woodpeckers, warblers and nuthatches will flock to suet.

We have everything you need!

Providing ice-free water is essential. Not only due to drought conditions, but some natural sources may ice over. A shallow, properly placed bath is always a lure for a wide variety of thirsty, dirty birds. It also allows you a good long look at the birds.

Water Your Grass in Stage 4 Restrictions Without Going to Jail!

SDI (Subsurface Drip Irrigation) is a very efficient

method of lawn irrigation. Many people have heard of drip irrigation in shrub beds, but this is a way to distribute water directly to the root system of your turfgrass. Drip irrigation is allowed even in Kerrville’s Stage 4 water restrictions.

Because of increasing interest in SDI, I have put together a list of common questions and concerns:

Can my existing irrigation system be converted to SDI?

Yes, most professionally installed systems convert very easily to SDI.

Will all my existing grass have to be replaced?

No, our low impact installation method does minimal damage to your existing turfgrass. We do not use trenchers or heavy equipment to retrofit your system. We slice 4 inches down into the ground and bury the drip line by hand.

Can I install SDI with new sod?

Yes; we installed new lawns in July this year that not only survived, but thrived!

How much water will I save?

You can expect to cut your water usage in half, yet your grass roots will get more water!

Will the grass roots clog up the drip line?

No, we use Rainbird XFS Dripline with Copper Shield technology that prevents root intrusion and clogging. (See more at www.rainbird.com/sdi) Some other benefits are: - No overspray onto sidewalks, streets, or house! - No evaporation loss! - No above-ground parts for animals to chew or mowers to hit. Smart People Deserve

Smart Homes by Calvin Luck

Have you ever arrived home late and told yourself, “I wish I could turn on some lights without getting out of the car”? Well now you can. Smart House technology has come a long way toward being both affordable and user-friendly. Radio frequency systems make it possible to retrofit your existing home without expensive rewiring. Your home automation can truly be customized to your individual needs and taste. A simple system could light a pathway from the garage to the master suite, while a more elaborate set-up can be programmed for multiple scenes. A party scene might feature lower light levels in seating, conversation and bar areas; full

lighting in food preparation and serving areas; pathway lighting and powder rooms. Clean-up setting could bring all lights to full brightness. A panic mode might turn on outdoor lighting to deter a would-be intruder. Bedside remote controls can notify you of lighting left on and correct the problem without leaving the warm comfort of your bed. The smart house system can also control window coverings, an especially useful option for media rooms. Home entertainment equipment can also be integrated into the system. The smart house control can also be assigned a random program to turn lights on and off at different times to provide an occupied appearance during your absence. Applications are available to monitor and control the system from a smart phone

or internet connection. Reduced energy costs can also be achieved by lowering the maximum lighting level in many areas as well as incorporating occupancy sensors to extinguish lights in unoccupied areas. In this age of smart technology, shouldn’t your home be the smartest place of all? Bring your home into the 21st century and enjoy the comfort of truly being the queen (or king) of your castle. Title Talk by Diane Green

...and a Happy New Year Once again

, a new year is upon us. Once again, we set goals, make resolutions, and try to predict what lies ahead. While thinking about what lies ahead, I often turn to where we’ve been. By most accounts, we have traversed a difficult financial road the past few years. Although the subprime mortgage disaster began as early as 2007, my business was somewhat sheltered from the fallout until late in 2009. In January, 2010, I needed and found a positive outlook that I shared in my Title Talk article entitle A Positive Forecast. I pointed out that Texas was a leader in job creation and had an unemployment rate lower than the national average. Two years later, there continues to be good news relating to the Texas economy. Yesterday, I read an economic report that states, “Texas leads the way when it comes to states that will add the most jobs over the next five years. Total employment in Texas is forecasted to expand 2.9 percent annually through 2015 according to research firm Moody’s Analytics. That represents 1.6 million new net jobs for the state over five years.”

Two years ago, I also quoted real estate economist Ron Schildknecht, who said, “I believe now is the time to invest in your future and buy a home.” These words were written at a time when a typical home mortgage could be obtained for less than 4.5% interest, compared to the typical 17% interest rate in the 1970s. Today, headlines proclaim that interest rates continue to reach all-time lows. Right now, a 30 year, fixed rate home mortgage can be secured for 3.99% and 15 year mortgage rates are as slow as 3.27%. Yes, there are certainly opportunities for people with good credit to purchase a home that they can afford, so now really is the time to buy a home or refinance an existing mortgage. Homeownership has and will continue to drive our economy. I remain a proud title professional who helps protect the dream of homeownership. As we begin a new year filled with hope and high expectations, I wish everyone many blessings and much success.

Diane Green moved to Kerrville in 1972 with husband, Bob, and immediately began her title insurance career at Kerr County Abstract & Title Co. Diane and Bob enjoyed raising their children in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. Diane has spent 39 years in the title business and now owns Kerr County Abstract. There are resort spas, destination spas, day spas, med spas and more. But which one is right for you? The answer is simple, they are all right, and while some may have common services, there are major differences between the different types of spas. No one regulates the use of the word spa. That’s why some businesses may promote spa services when all they have is a massage table and an occasional staff. So don’t be lured simply by the use of spa in the name of a company or service. A med spa does have a distinction unique to other spas in that there is a medical doctor on staff who oversees or performs all of the procedures. It is the pairing of a cosmetic procedure office and a day spa. This means all of your aesthetic needs can be met in one location. You can get laser hair removal or Botox treatments, undergo sessions to help erase lines and wrinkles, and get a traditional facial or a massage all at the same place. Like a day spa, the med spa enforces the importance of a relaxing atmosphere. A soothing, comforting ambiance helps to put you at ease for even the slightly uncomfortable procedures. Being doctor-supervised, a med spa, like Bella Luz, is able to use a higher-grade product and, therefore, the services show greater results than day spa services. A med spa is the perfect balance between clinical and luxury.

What to expect from a med spa • Relaxing and soothing atmosphere, including pampering. • A variety of pharmaceutical-grade skin care products available for take-home use. • Licensed aestheticians and health care professionals to help with your individual skin and body care needs. • The same quality medical care that you would expect from a cosmetic surgery or dermatology office. Medical spas can treat conditions on your face and body like brown spots, redness, and broken capillaries that cannot be treated at all or as effectively by a traditional esthetician. Med spa menus vary, but you usually have a range of choices.

20│ Jan-Feb 2012 │ KCP

Choosing a med spa • Who owns and operates the med spa? Sometimes doctors lend their names to medical spas but have relatively little involvement. Bella’s doctor, Odemaris Young, MD, is handson as an owner, manager and service provider. • Who will be performing the procedure? What is the licensing and experience of the people who are actually doing the services? Some services, like botox and other fillers are as much an art as a science. Bella Luz prides itself on its stellar reputation for excellent results. • What kind of equipment do they use? Prices for medical spa treatments like laser and skin tightening (or skin rejuvenation) are higher because the equipment itself is expensive. You want the most up-to-date, least painful technologies. Bella Luz has the best medical-grade equipment (available only to med spas) in the business and keeps current with new technologies. Bella’s prices are comparable, if not lower than, med spas of its caliber. Hopefully now you know a little more about what a med spa is and what to expect from one. All of the staff at Bella Luz work together to help you get the best results possible from your treatments and are always happy to answer any questions to help you be better informed and have realistic expectations. And if you just want a massage, or a manicure or pedicure, some say Bella has the best in town!

Kathy Dietert, RN, BSN, has been a nurse for over thirty years with an extensive background in aesthetic medicine. Ode Young, MD, has been a physician for over twenty years with a concentration in aesthetic medicine for the past four and a half years. Kathy, Dr. Ode and their trained staff provide a full range of aesthetic services at their state-of-the-art and beautifully appointed spa, Bella Luz. 1411 Water Street, Kerrville. THERE’S A BETTER WAY –

WHY

Home Health Care? More than a million elderly or disabled Americans face being home alone. Simple, everyday activities necessary for their health and safety can be insurmountable challenges. They worry, how will I grocery shop and cook? How will I bathe? How will I keep the house clean? How will I remember to take my medications? Some may not even be aware or willing to look at these endless questions. Family and friends may aid many of the homebound, but the responsibilities of caregiving often overwhelm them too. Alternative Health Care, the home

health care company owned and operated by Annabelle Lindner, RHIT, and Kathy Dietert, RN, BSN, provides the Hill Country’s answer to these essential needs. And if a client eventually requires a higher level of skilled care, Annabelle and Kathy offer a seamless transition to their Medicare/Medicaidcertified, Blue Cross/Blue Shield-provider company, Tri County Home Health. “We enhance an individual’s ability to remain in their home,” Annabelle explains, “and their spirits are nurtured by being at home.”

Studies show that when surrounded by the familiar, in rooms and routines they know, people get well faster than in an institution. “And they’re happier,” Annabelle says with a smile. “That chair they sit in every day has been there a long time, and that’s the way they like it.” With Medicare and Medicaid benefits facing cuts, those needing health care will be turning more and more to private insurance and private pay. Because it is licensed for skilled care, Alternative Health Care qualifies as a provider with many long-term care insurances. “We advocate for our clients to help them receive the insurance benefits they need,” assures Kathy.

ALTERNATIVE HEALTH CARE Due to an aging population, the US Department of Health and Human Services reports that by 2050, an estimated 27 million people will need some type of long-term care. Of those 27 million, the majority will receive long-term care in the community. Home health agencies are the major providers of formal, community-based long-term care.

Staffing Matters

Since its inception fifteen years ago, Alternative Health Care’s treatment team has addressed the medical and personal needs of clients. A qualified staff of 56, including two registered nurses in-house all day and on-call all night, allows clients to remain in their homes with dignity and pride. The two RNs take calls and troubleshoot for aides in client’s homes, often sparing the client a difficult trip to the doctor. Kathy notes, “This is where we differ from other home health care providers.” Each Alternative Health Care client receives individualized personal care, supported by a coordination of services and maintained through comprehensive case management. “The most important thing people in health care can do is communicate,” Annabelle emphasizes. “We encourage open communication, not only among our staff, but between us as the provider and the client and the client’s family.” Alternative Health Care carefully screens and interviews all applicants hired for its multidisciplinary team. “We are always looking for good staff,” Annabelle says, “qualified caring individuals who want to help those who have given us values like our work ethic and our love of country.”

our operations. They know each facet of a client’s personality and what will work best for that person.” Annabelle continues, “They solve problems proactively and even make unannounced house visits just to make sure that all is well.”

Services with a Smile

No one lives in a vacuum of medical needs only, and Alternative Health Care recognizes the necessity of also meeting their clients’ personal needs. “The staff provides care not only for our clients, but for their families, friends, and animals, as well––all those things are important to the client’s wellness,” says Annabelle. “Our caregivers respect their clients’ important issues of independence and dignity, handling their medical needs with sensitivity.” Individualized client care plans often include outings and exercise, activities vital to overall well-being.

Kathy points out, “Our staff turnover is minimal. Clients get to know their caregivers, to feel comfortable and safe with them. Our caregivers are the physician’s and the family’s eyes and ears.”

Medical needs typically include IV therapy, wound care, and pain management. Kathy adds, “And we have telemonitoring technology that allows our nurses to monitor clients’ vital signs on laptops via the Internet. This lets them detect small changes before they become big concerns.”

Jennifer Saul and Deborah Bessey are Alternative Health Care staffing cocoordinators. They make sure caregivers and home health providers are present when needed. Kathy says, “Jennifer and Deborah love their jobs and they are vital to

For those individuals who are just returning home from the hospital, Alternative Health Care can offer help with new medication routines and medical care. The company accepts both long-term and short-term clients––from infants to the elderly. “It

doesn’t matter if a client needs four hours or twenty-four hours of care––we can help,” Kathy notes. “We’ll even provide sitters at the hospital to give a respite to family members. It’s all about reducing stress for everyone.” Alternative Health Care and Tri County Home Health provide professional health care in the nurturing environment of your personal surroundings. Home care is the viable alternative––there’s no place like home. Alternative Health Care and Tri County Home Health, located at 117 Hugo Street, Kerrville, serve the Hill Country counties of Kerr, Kendall, Gillespie, Medina, Bexar, Edwards, and Real. Both companies are licensed by the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services and are members of the Texas Association of Home Care and Hospice. Alternative Health Care and Tri County Home Health place an informative article in each issue of Kerr County People magazine, and you can read more about them online in the January 2010 issue (www.kerrcountypeople. com). Aspartame: A Toxic Sweetener In Texas, more than 30 percent of

adults and children are obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control. So it’s no surprise that many people turn to artificial sweeteners, such as Asparatame, as part of their weight-loss program. Aspartame is sold as NutraSweet, Equal, and Spoonful, and is an ingredient in many processed foods. But the potential benefits of artificial sweeteners are offset by their many unpleasant side effects––enough to make you reconsider this sugar substitute. Aspartame accounts for more than 75 percent of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the FDA. One of the three chemicals that make up Aspartame is a substance called aspartic acid. On the positive side, it allows information to be

transmitted in the brain from neuron to neuron––but this chemical can literally stimulate the neural cells to death. Less acute reactions include headaches, nausea, abdominal pain, fatigue, sleep problems, vision problems, depression, anxiety attacks, asthma, and chest pain. Fifty percent of Asparame is an amino acid called phenylalanine. Studies show that excess levels of phenylalanine in the brain can lead to decreased levels of serotonin–– the “feel good” chemical––and thus contribute to depression. Ten percent of Aspartame is a substance called methanol or wood alcohol. This breaks down into formic acid and formaldehyde in the body––both of which are toxic. The EPA recommends limiting methanol consumption to 7.8 mg per day. A one-liter beverage sweetened with

health awareness by Dr. John Bilderback, Chiropractor

Aspartame contains about 56 mg. That means if you daily consume only onethird of a 12-ounce soft drink sweetened with Aspartame you’re already over the recommended safe level. The best way to avoid problems associated with this sweet poison is to eliminate or limit soft drinks and other products that contain Aspartame. Read the ingredient labels on foods and drinks you purchase. Be aware, be safe. Mention this article to receive your initial consultation free. Dr. Bilderback received his degree from Western State Chiropractic College in Portland, Oregon in 1985. He has chosen to serve the folks of Kerr County and surrounding area for more than twenty years. 1416 Sidney Baker, 257-2323

How Strong Are Your Bones? by Niessa Meier, RN, CNM

What is osteoporosis?

When your bones lose calcium, become weak, and break easily, it is called osteoporosis. Bones may become so weak that they break during everyday activities such as bending over or walking.

How can you prevent osteoporosis? You can’t change your age, race, or family. But you can help prevent osteoporosis by doing the following.

The calcium in your bones is like money in the bank. Your body draws on this calcium savings account regularly to keep you healthy. At the same time, your body takes the calcium from your food and makes regular deposits in your bones. Through childhood and young adulthood there are more deposits than withdrawals. Your bones get thicker and harder. By the time you are 30 years old, your bones are as big and strong as they will ever be. After you turn 30, your body does not store calcium or build bone as easily. For some people, the calcium withdrawals begin to outnumber the deposits. Their bones start to dissolve. Over time, the inside of the bones may start to look like Swiss cheese.

You should have a bone mineral density test if you: • Are post-menopausal and have any of the above risk factors • Are over age 65 • Have fractured a bone in the last few years For more information, talk with your provider at Ob/Gyn Associates, or check out the National Osteoporosis Foundation at www.nof.org.

Who gets osteoporosis?

You are more at risk of getting osteoporosis if you: • Are white • Are over age 65 • Have a thin body type • Are in poor health • Have a family member with osteoporosis • Are a smoker • Consume more than two alcoholic per day • Do not get regular exercise • Have never been a milk drinker or eaten many foods with calcium 36│Jan-Feb 2012 │ KCP

How can I tell if I have osteoporosis?

The only way to know how strong your bones are is to have a bone mineral density test. This test can easily be done in many medical offices, including Ob/Gyn Associates. It only takes a few minutes, and will give you and your healthcare provider a look at the density of your bones. The report will include a score that compares your bone mineral density to healthy bones.

Bones are hard. How can they become weak?

More than 28 million people in the United States have some bone weakness. Most of the people with osteoporosis are women over the age of 40.

cheese; or dark green leafy vegetables. If you don’t get enough calcium in your diet, take a calcium supplement daily.

Now I Get It We are given opportunities in

life to learn from our experiences. Recently I had an eye-opening experience that I’d like to share with you. I am 35-year-old mother of three children (ages two months to nine years) and work full time as a nurse for Tri County Home Health. On November 10, 2011 I met with a neurosurgeon because I had been suffering with severe back pain. On November 11, I was in a San Antonio Hospital undergoing major back surgery. For more than 15 years, I have been providing health care to people who have had surgery. Suddenly, I found myself on the other side. I was completely dependent on everyone else for what felt like everything. I was taking medication that I had never taken before. I felt like all I could do was just lie in my bed and breathe. After a few days in the hospital, I was sent to a rehabilitation unit for therapy––like the ones most of my home care patients come from––so I could relearn to walk. My first day in rehab gave me a quick idea what this was going to be like. Hard. I was expected to

be up and dressed and ready to participate in three hours of therapy. I remembered all those times I had received calls or complaints from patients in the home health setting, saying that it was too much. I felt like one of our patients. Many times Tri County Home Health’s patients and/or their families call the office and say they can’t handle all that we are giving them. First we send a skilled nurse, and then a home health aide, then a

Well, I want to share with you that it is too much for most people to handle––I felt the same way. What I realized was that if I could get the right balance of all those services I could manage. After one week of rehabilitation, I was released from Peterson ARU to go home for more therapy. This experience taught me many things in my personal and professional life. I believe that I was given this opportunity so I could become a better nurse, a better educator to other health

care staff, and a better patient advocate. I truly understand what it means to not understand the printed home exercise sheet. I know just how it feels to have a dressing removed that seemed as though it had been glued on. I also now know what it feels like to lose your independence and have to rely on others for assistance. It is a humbling experience and it has changed me. For all of you who have been home care patients, I commend you for sticking it out when we give you too much and you don’t feel you can manage. I tip my hat to all of you who have cared for a loved one after a traumatic illness or a surgery. Family and friends have made it possible for me to recover from my life-changing surgery. For those of you who don’t have close friends and family to help out, I also understand. celebrated the Christmas Awards Banquet for all volunteers on December 3rd in the hospital’s Dorothy Burgess McDade Dining Room. The group was entertained by David McClung, Elaina Mitchell, Doug Edwards and Milton Dare. Chief Operating Officer of PRMC, Steve Pautler, FACHE, gave the special remarks. With the New Year comes the need for new volunteers. PRMC volunteers have made themselves available to take on the new challenges. Volunteers help out at the hospital’s information desk, as well as many other areas, and the registration desk at the ACC building. A new position has been added at the new PRMC outpatient draw station. Volunteers provide much needed assistance throughout the hospital. If you’d like to spend some of your time helping others, we have room for you in our volunteer family. Please call or stop in to visit with me.
