Divine Truths
We
are a free people who by God’s ingenious design rule ourselves through our elected government that we the people have and do establish. To this purpose, our form of government is by definition a “free republic.” We, the citizens, have established and authorized a government, elected by majority vote, to administer the rule of law by which we must all live. Nevertheless, because our liberty comes exclusively from the Creator, our government can never be empowered to frivolously strip us from our liberties even if a collective majority of citizens might choose to do so. The Fourth of July, or Independence Day, is a federal holiday that commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. This is the day the American colonies declared their independence from Great Britain. This American founding document of freedom preceded The United States Constitution which was adopted on September 17, 1787. It is also notable that we do not celebrate a federal holiday on the day Great Britain surrendered to General George Washington at Yorktown in 1781 or the signing of the Treaty of Paris in September, 1783, wherein Great Britain formerly granted independence to the American colonies. The Declaration of Independence stands alone as the most significant document in the annals of American history. Prior to July 4, 1776, the British government was as much the legitimate ruling authority over the American colonies as our current federal and state governments are authorized to rule over us today. That is until the signing of The Declaration of Independence, which was one of the last nails in the coffin of the doctrine of “Divine Right of Kings.” This archaic doctrine was a political and religious doctrine of royal absolutism. Unlike the doctrine outlined in the Declaration of Independence, this doctrine
asserted that monarchs received the right to rule over the people directly from the Creator. In penning the Declaration of Independence, the American founders declared a new political and religious doctrine that lit a fire in the hearts of all men with their immutable words: “We hold these truths to be selfevident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed . . .” According to the Declaration of Independence, we are all born with equal and non-transferable rights. We do not get our “unalienable rights” from the authority of a government or the authority of a collective. We received our right to life and liberty from the Creator and the only legitimate purpose of government is to secure those rights individually for each of us. It is not the purpose or the right of government or the collective to take those God given rights away, without just cause, from any individual no matter how beneficial it would be to the government or to the collective. What government or collective can or should stand in the way of God’s plan for the individual for whom God endowed with such powers? Unless of course, as some assert, God does not exist and therefore there would be no barrier to the tyranny of government or the whim of the collective. Our “unalienable rights” cannot exist outside of God. This thought brings a whole new perspective to the notion of “Separation of Church and State.” If by this often cited cliché, we mean “Separation of God and State,” then, therein lies an inherent threat to our individual liberty and an imminent danger to our fragile Republic. We live in troubled political and economic times in which the very foundations of our Constitution are being brought into question. Some collectivists conveniently claim our Constitution is a “living and breathing document.” Their theory is that the principals
and purposes of the Constitution change with the current collective thought, no matter how perverse the thought. Even if this where true, and it is not, let us not forget the words and principals enumerated in our very first, founding document. The Constitution can be changed, but those immutable words of freedom contained in the Declaration of Independence will stand forever as undeniable and divine truths founded in the supreme authority of the Creator. Our life and liberty are rights endowed unto us by a Creator whose authority and the rights granted to us cannot be challenged by any collective. THE ART OF KRISPEN SPENCER
W
hen you set eyes on Krispen Spencer’s brilliantly colorful and vibrant paintings, you’d never dream she was fortythree when she first started studying art. She began taking night classes in beginning drawing and eventually earned a bachelor’s degree in art. At the age of fifty-seven, she earned an MFA in painting, the highest level in the profession. Krispen’s art form is an unusual one: poured paint. She literally pours acrylic paint onto the flat canvas surface, then gently lifts and tilts the canvas, moving the paint around to create dazzling images before allowing the excess to drip off the table into buckets. Her signature method may appear easy, but developing her awardwinning art has taken many years to perfect. Viewing Krispen’s work, you become completely absorbed in the breathtaking colors and free-flowing, fluid designs. Krispen’s award-winning paintings are displayed in numerous private and corporate collections, as well as in galleries, including the 1550 Gallery in Kerrville. Her work will be featured at the 1550 Gallery, 1550 Junction Highway, through August and exhibited there periodically in the future. If you’d like to learn more about Krispen’s unique painting method, she’ll be teaching at the Hill Country Arts Foundation in Ingram this fall. “…they’re always glad you came…”
“…where everybody knows your name, and they’re always glad you came…” are the famous words for the theme of the TV hit Cheers. This is the feeling found daily at Del Norte Restaurant at 710 Junction Highway in Kerrville. The breakfast and lunch crowd are among the most diverse group you’ll find. Suit and tie bankers and lawyers, doctors and nurses in scrubs, and ranchers and laborers in overalls and tee shirts gather daily for some great home-style cooking. Breakfast there has always been great, so Pam and I tried the Thursday lunch buffet. The hand-breaded chicken fried steak was hot, crispy and perfectly seasoned, and the BBQ ribs were outstanding—tender and juicy. The chicken and dumplings served as my soup—and I went back for more! The salad bar was rather extensive—all fresh and inviting. The guacamole salad was among the best I’ve tasted anywhere. All this, along with dessert, coffee or tea, for less than ten dollars!
Each day you’ll find different entrées. On Mondays you’ll enjoy chicken and dumplings and brisket or Italian food. Another favorite of mine is the fried chicken or chopped steak on Tuesdays. Wednesday is Mexican food day—a sure crowd pleaser. Fried catfish and stuffed bell peppers are served on Fridays. On Saturday, enjoy baked chicken and beef tips and noodles. Chicken fried chicken, roast beef and ham is a great family favorite on Sunday. Breakfast begins at 7:00 AM and lunch is served from 10:30 – 2:00 PM daily. The simple, café décor is the perfect setting for “family dining in a relaxing atmosphere.” Hope to see you there—maybe we’ll sit down and eat together some day. There are a lot of things in life I’m not very good at – algebra, crossword puzzles, and staying up late are just a few. But after twenty-five years of working in the fitness business, I do profess a level of confidence when it comes to working out. I know how to work out. Or, that’s what I thought.

n the late seventies when I landed my first athletic club job, Nautilus machines still had the market cornered. The world had not yet learned about Buns of Steel, boot camp classes, or certified personal trainers. Back then you hung out with the basement gym rats and ex-jocks if you wanted to learn the ropes about weight training. I eventually found myself under the tutelage of an ex-pro football player who insisted on training me like one of the guys. His grueling regimens included copious amounts of sweating, pushing, heaving, straining, grunting, and increasingly heavier weights. And through it all I had one singular goal – to bench press my body weight. The day he proudly pointed to my newly-minted bicep bump, I knew I was hooked. So, for twenty-five years my workout routine, based on this early indoctrination, has been pretty much the same. Then I met Jose Flores and my fitness world view was forever transformed.
TRUE Fitness Expert I’m immediately struck by his intensity – this is one no-nonsense guy. He looks me in the eye, sizing me up; determining if I have what it takes. “My clients are very demanding of me, and I’m just as demanding of them,” Jose says. Somehow I know he’s not kidding. Also in these first few seconds it has become abundantly clear that what I thought would be a piece-of-cake workout has taken a serious turn. Word on the street is that Jose is a tough and demanding trainer and his studio is a reflection of his down-to-business style. Walking in the door, I understand what he meant when he said “when you walk into my studio you know you’re here to work.” He tells me he trains with only those who are ready to take themselves, and their life, to the next level. “But,” he says, “I’m only here to teach you, you’re going to do the work.” If he has an initiate’s mantra it is that “Every one of us has an inner athlete—whether we’re aware of it or not. And when you’re ready, I’m here to train that athlete.”
Achieving Lasting Balance
Jose’s credentials alone should have been a red flag about the piece-of-cake workout idea. A life-long athlete, I’m staring at walls covered with his awards and trophies in competitive bodybuilding and Shotokan karate. I mean, this is someone who has gone through the Navy SEALS Fitness Challenge— three times—just for the experience. Credentials aside, he tells me it’s his firsthand experience with “letting himself go” that enables him to connect with clients on a psychological level. After achieving championship status he felt as though he had peaked—and with no further goals to keep him motivated, he was lost. He stopped exercising and after two years weighed 240 pounds. Eventually it was his brother’s chiding about the “female” appearance of his chest that inspired him to start working out again. It took a year of diet and exercise trial and error to get down to 165 pounds. But within that year his quest for a better body had also become an obsession. He became anorexic as a result of not eating

enough of the right foods to sustain his new program. Subsequently, he dedicated himself to overcoming the disease by reworking his diet and exercise program to regain muscle and body fat. His dramatic turn-around earned him a success story article in the October 1997 issue of Muscle and Fitness magazine. In December of that same year his success story was also recognized by Exercise for Men Only magazine who awarded him the title of “Mr. Exercise.” He realizes now that he had to experience both ends of the spectrum—athlete and couch potato—to achieve lasting balance. That balance, he tells me, begins in your mind—honestly assessing yourself and seeing the person you wish to become. Until you do this, he stresses, how will you know when you get there?

Outside Jose’s office is another “wall of fame”—this one covered with photos of his clients. These are not Muscle and Fitness shots, but people from our community in a wide array of ages, shapes, and sizes. Their “before” pictures show excess body fat, spare tires, bad posture, and lack of muscle tone. He tells me his clients come from all walks of life—business professionals, retirees, young people, and stay-at-home parents. They share a common trait, however. All of them decided they were not satisfied with the way
they looked and felt, and committed to do something about it. Next to these “before” shots hang photos of those people now. All are lighter, leaner, and definitely more sculpted. They also appear more confident and much happier about themselves. They should be; it is an impressive portfolio. Jose tells me that many people mistakenly assume they’re too old to begin a serious training program. He feels people ages thirty to sixty-five have the greatest success because by middle age their lives are more stable and they’re also more willing to commit and do the work. “It takes dedication,” he says emphatically, “to learn about exercise and nutrition as a way of life. The more fit you remain as you get older, the more you’ll be able to enjoy and accomplish in life. The definition of fit is always being ready for anything—knowing that you can do anything, anytime.” The challenge, he says, is to have patience. Many years of bad habits take time to undo. People need to give their bodies time to change and become accustomed to those changes. Continued on page 12

Instead of Working Out, Train
He pulls me away from the “wall of fame” explaining that we will not be working out as I am accustomed; instead, we will be training. After a quarter century, I am going to learn that there’s a big difference. He watches closely as I demonstrate how I’ve been doing an upper back exercise; then we start over. I’m showing him how I work out; he’s going to show me what it means to train. He instructs me to focus as he deftly adjusts my grip, my body angle, the arch of my back, the tilt of my head, the angle of my knees, even the position of my toes, until the target muscle group is exactly engaged. He explains to me that when I’m doing an exercise perfectly I don’t need to lift as much weight as I think to get results. There is no idle chitchat; when he sees me losing my focus he draws me right back to the moment. I’m horrified to discover how sloppy my technique has become. It’s clear I’ve succumbed to numbing routines rather than the razorsharp attention required. Even under his watchful eye I find myself back-sliding into old habits. Again and again he makes adjustments to my form. I’m embarrassed when reintroduced to long-neglected muscles. He points out how my muscles have become imbalanced—leaving me prone to injury. I have the humbling realization that despite the fact that I exercise on a regular basis, I’ve allowed myself to fall into a careless routine. I’ve forgotten how good it feels to train with purpose. Jose is reading my mind and reassures me that just like it happened to him and the folks on the wall, it can happen to us all. When I’m ready to redefine my goals I will regain my focus and my passion for fitness. So we talk about goals—do I understand what it takes to achieve a goal? Things must be given up. Am I willing to do the work? Good questions. “Now,” he says, “how will you know when you get there? Lots of people get lost trying to ‘get there’ and give up. Do you understand that perfection is a moving target?” He laughs at my obviously dismayed expression. “Lyndsey, you know what I’ve learned in life? You can never quit. Never. You know why? Because when you reach your ‘best’—you’re really just getting started.”

ur eyes are amazing! Put them behind a pair of optics and you will be stunned by the level of detail you can see. Expert or novice, binoculars and a field guide are indispensable for every birder. Without them, you may not know that the singing speck at the tree top is a golden-cheeked warbler! So, how does one pick the perfect pair of birding optics? First, there is no one binocular that will best meet the needs of every situation. Most compromises will be made between features and specifications. You will be best served by going to an expert who can guide you with your purchase. Before you go, you may want to brush up on some basics that will have you better equipped to make the right choice. Here it is, short and sweet. Binoculars are categorized with a set of numbers—7x35, 10x42, etc. The first number refers to magnification and the second number refers to the diameter of the front lens. A larger diameter lens means more light can enter and the image will be brighter. Here you will want to decide where you will be using your optics the most—at home or in the field and also under which light conditions. Then rely on the expert to guide you. There are two types of prisms—porro and roof. Without getting too complicated, prisms have to do with the optical path. Porro are “Z” shaped and roof are straight. Most birders will purchase roof prisms because they are more rugged, durable, streamlined and lightweight. Close focus is of particular interest to birders, as you may want to focus on a bird that is only 15 feet away. A good quality pair of binoculars will allow you to get a quick sharp focus of your bird or butterfly. am blessed with a wonderful job that takes me to some outstanding places. Recently, we completed a project near Medina, a beautiful private ranch that spans several hilltops––one with its own observatory and 24-inch telescope. The valleys were dammed to create lakes, and an enormous deck was built over the largest lake. The owners’ son was married on that deck. Because the wedding reception was held at the main house, the owners’ desired a spectacular outdoor environment.
I stayed on the ranch one night after bringing a load of materials to the site late in the evening. We awoke to a beautiful South Texas morning, with bees buzzing, hummingbirds humming, and rattlesnakes rattling. It was

This large-scale project included 6,000 face square feet of retaining walls, 8,200 square feet of stamped concrete and pavers, and more than 1,000 plants (90 percent of them native). Deadlines and high customer expectations added to the challenges of this project, but meeting those challenges and exceeding expectations are what keep my job from becoming mundane. Four and a half months later, we’d accomplished our goal. Currently we’re working on a project near Laredo. The home is an architectural gem, a splendid display of craftsmanship and attention to detail. The owners call it a 10,000-square-foot “hunting cabin.” I call it a cross between a European castle and the Alamo. We all agreed this masterpiece must be framed by a knockout landscape.

eal estate closings can be complicated, especially when it comes to determining who owes what. One determination is real estate property taxes, which are generally prorated through the day of closing. Proration, which comes from the Latin word pro rata, can be used to describe any situation where something is split equally over a period of time. In the case of real estate taxes, the buyer and seller usually assume responsibility for taxes during the time they owned the property. If you use a simple formula, you can calculate prorated taxes yourself before your closing.
Understand Your Bill
Identify the calendar days covered by the tax bill. In Kerr County, the tax bill covers one year, or 365 days, and the bill is paid in arrears (meaning 2010 taxes are due in January of 2011).

Break It Down
Divide the total bill by the number of days covered. If the tax bill is $5,000, the answer is $13.70 ($5,000/365). This is the daily fee associated with the tax bill.
Count the Days
Begin with January 1st and count the number of days that the seller has owned the property. For example, if the seller plans to own the home through June 30th, you would calculate 181 days.
The Final Calculation
Multiply the number of days by the daily rate. In this example, the answer is $2,479.70 (181*$13.70). The seller would be responsible for the $2.479.70, and the buyer’s responsibility would include the portion of taxes remaining. Because tax bills are not sent until the end of the year, buyers typically receive a credit from the seller for their portion of taxes. If you are buying or selling real estate and have questions about taxes, talk to a title company professional. THE DIVIDE, TEXAS. The Divide is a dispersed rural community located along several miles of State Highway 41 about thirty miles west-northwest of Kerrville in western Kerr County. In the early 1880s settlers homesteaded along this strip of Edwards Plateau that functioned as a natural dividing line for rainfall run-off. fter a visit to the award winning Comanche Trace development, you see very clearly what prompted Houstonians Ron and Robyn Workman to purchase one of the finest hilltop lots available to build their hill country inspired dream home. The 4,440-square-foot house by Tony Roberts Custom Homes sits on the brow of a hill on Ranch View Court, offering one of the highest elevations in the neighborhood and a spectacular view of 3 greens and 2 tee boxes. The unpretentious, u-shaped structure offers open-air dining and social areas for a casual and tranquil lifestyle. The heart of the first floor is the living room, which project architect, Joe Neely, left open to the kitchen with a casual dining area.
Robyn chose quartz for the kitchen counters and added a stainless-steel-topped island. “We are home bodies and we enjoy cooking a lot. It is very enjoyable to come home and spend time in the kitchen together,” says Robyn. You can fit two king cabs and still have plenty of room for a workshop and your golf cart.” “The thing with this lot is that there is only one adjacent neighbor and beyond that it feels very private. It also is one of the highest points and has an unencumbered view. We also had the design in mind when we were looking and the u-shaped floor plan. It is situated on the lot for a purpose and that is to ensure there is always shade on the back somewhere for entertaining,” shares Ron.

our out of five adults say they’ve been brought down by back pain at some point during their lives. In fact, low-back pain, the most common form, is one of the top five reasons Americans see their doctors. Back pain affects both men and women of all ages and can make even getting out of bed each morning an agonizing experience. Low-back pain can have many causes, including poor posture, excess weight, mental stress that leads to muscle tension, muscle strain, a torn ligament or a slipped disk. Your back is especially susceptible to injury because it bears more weight than any other part of your body. What’s more, occasionally it is difficult to determine the reason for back pain since a combination of several factors is often the cause. One common type of lower back pain is sciatica (pronounced: sī-at’-ĭ-kă). The sciatic is a nerve that when compressed can cause pain and usually affects one side of the body. The pain may be dull, sharp, burning, or accompanied by intermittent shooting pain from the buttock down the back or side of the leg. Sciatica pain can extend below the knee and even into the feet. Sitting and trying to stand up may be painful and coughing or sneezing can intensify the pain. In most cases there isn’t permanent nerve damage however, it’s important to be aware of increasing trunk or leg weakness, or bladder and/or bowel incontinence which could be signs of a more serious condition.

gradual onset of lower back pain may be associated with conditions such as spinal stenosis, degenerative disk disease or osteoarthritis. If your back pain lasts longer than 72 hours you should make an appointment with your doctor. If back pain occurs immediately following a fall or impact accident, go to the emergency room for evaluation.
Diagnosis and treatment
Diagnosis begins with a history and physical examination by a primary care physician, emergency department physician, orthopedist, neurologist or pain management physician. This examination may include x-rays of the lower spine, a CT or MRI depending on the location and type of pain. Armed
with the results from the examination and testing, the treating physician will usually be able to make the diagnosis and prescribe appropriate treatment. Treatments for back pain vary greatly and may include medication, physical therapy, bed rest or muscle relaxants. In more severe cases local muscle, joint or spinal injections may be necessary to provide lasting relief. Some think back pain is just a part of life – but it’s important to have the condition evaluated. Many who have experienced debilitating back pain, after receiving appropriate treatment, are now living relatively pain free. Many of our family, friends and neighbors suffer with back pain right here in our own community. The good news is that through local physicians and hospital services it can usually be treated right here in Kerrville. Dr. Clayton is certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology and is an active member of the Peterson Regional Medical Center medical staff. T
here are many times people walk up to me and ask, “What should I say to my grieving friend?” They continue with, “I want to say something that will comfort them yet I am at a loss for words and tend to walk away.” On the other hand, those who are grieving will tell me, “I feel like a have a disease since my spouse died. All my friends were there throughout the visitation and funeral, yet two days later they were all gone. I kept hearing the say things like ‘Call me if you need me, my condolences,’ and sometimes even worse—‘God closes a door and opens a window.’ They will add things like ‘you are young and can remarry’ or want to introduce me to a friend of theirs immediately, as if you can replace your spouse.” I will never forget when a friend’s 18 year old son died. A long-time friend walked up to him and said, “I know how you feel, our dog just died.” These people are not to blame. I call them WMFs or Well Meaning Friends (and sometimes family). I too have been guilty of being a WMF. We hate to see our friends and family hurt. It can be in our nature to want to fix things. I have to tell you—this cannot be fixed! The one who has died has died. There is no more fixing that, yet there is something you can do. Be a Good Friend. A Good Friend is someone who is present and available. Offering nothing more than just being there, closing their mouth and listening. Perhaps a pat on the shoulder if appropriate. We cannot map out anyone’s grief. Each relationship is
different, therefore, everyone grieves in their own way. Each one grieves in their own way and own time. A good friend doesn’t criticize one’s grief. We accept their grief and do not judge. A good friend doesn’t use the term denial. I say, thank God for denial, without it, some of us wouldn’t be able to take the next step. Our grief, which is a gift, will show us the way, as difficult as it can be. There is no time limit on our grief. The person who has died will always be a part of who we are and a part of our lives. Good news for good friends! You can’t fix it. Nothing you say can make it feel better. All you have to do is be present, call to check on them, and allow time to listen. Be tender with them and yourself. Take their lead not yours. And love them.

ccording to the Journal of the American Medical Association, as many as one-third of U.S. adults are considered obese––and more than 30 percent of children and teens are overweight. That shouldn’t be a surprise, given that during the past twenty years sugar consumption in this country has increased from 26 pounds to 135 pounds per person per year. Prior to 1900 the average person ate only five pounds per year––and cardiovascular disease and cancer were virtually unheard of. In the seventies, experts believed fat was the bad guy. To reduce the risk of heart disease, they told us to reduce fat consumption by 30 percent. Since then, Americans have cut down their intake of saturated fat, yet the obesity rate has more than doubled, diabetes has tripled, and heart disease is still the nation’s biggest killer.
The past twenty years sugar consumption in this country has increased from 26 pounds to 135 pounds per person per year. New research indicates that scientists may have picked the wrong culprit. Processed carbohydrates, which many of us eat in place of fats, may increase the risk of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease more than fat does.
Count Your Carbs The glycemic index (GI) is a measure of how different foods affect your blood glucose levels. It assigns each food a number rating. The lower the GI rating the slower your body absorbs and digests the food, and the more gradually sugar is released into your blood stream. Foods with a high glycemic index value (over 70) quickly raise blood glucose levels, which stimulates the pancreas to secrete insulin to restore balance. (Many online sites, including diabetesnet.com, list common foods and their GI ratings.) Rapid fluctuations of blood sugar are not healthy because they place stress on the body. Insulin also promotes the storage of fat. When you eat foods that are high in sugar you pave the way for rapid weight gain and elevated triglyceride levels, 34│ KCP │July-August 2010
both of which can lead to cardiovascular disease. Complex carbohydrates––whole grains, fruit, beans and legumes– –tend to be absorbed more slowly by the body than simple carbs and refined sugar, thereby easing the impact on blood sugar levels. So the next time you want a snack, instead of reaching for a donut or a bag of pretzels, eat an apple or some yogurt. Stay away from processed foods in particular. Remember, you are what you eat. hat do Angelina Jolie, Cindy Crawford, Christina Aguilera and Demi Moore have in common? They, along with many other celebrities, have all breastfed their children. In celebration of World Breastfeeding Week that is coming up August 1-7th I’ve come up with a list of what I consider the most amazing benefits of breastfeeding for moms and babies.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all babies receive breast milk only until they are 6 months old, and then get breast milk with supplemental food until they reach one year. breastfeeding rates in the world. Each year lack of breastfeeding compliance costs our country 13 billion dollars in direct health care costs according to the researches at Cambridge Health Alliance. So, if it’s so great, and the pediatricians recommend it, why do so few women breastfeed? Breastfeeding can be difficult! New moms often don’t get much support from their families when it comes to breastfeeding since our mothers and grandmothers were encouraged to use artificial milk. In our culture breasts are seen as sexual, so we think that feeding babies with them is a little weird. There is also not much tolerance for feeding babies publicly, which causes a lot of stress for new moms. In honor of world breastfeeding week, when you see a busy mom giving her baby the best start she can by breastfeeding, smile at her! You have many choices in Medicare drug plans. If you sign up with a Medicare Advantage Plan to get drug benefits, the services you receive from this home health agency may no longer be covered. A Medicare Advantage plan is different from regular Medicare and is often an HMO where your choice of doctors, hospitals, and home health agencies is limited.
Before you sign anything related to your Medicare drug coverage, make sure you ask: 1) Will I still be able to receive services from my home health agency? 2) Is my home health agency a provider?
Certain people that have both Medicare and Medicaid may be automatically enrolled in a HMO. If you are one of those people, you have the right to choose whether you want to go back to regular Medicare or stay with a HMO. If you chose to sign up with a Medicare HMO, you have the right to change back to traditional Medicare. You should check to see if you have been enrolled in one of these plans. Enrollment in a Medicare Advantage plan or HMO for Medicare drug coverage can affect your home health services. It can lead to your home health care services ending or you being charged for the cost of home health services the HMO says are not covered. Please tell your home health provider if you have enrolled in any Medicare drug plan.
If the answer to either of these questions is “no”, you should talk to your home health agency first before signing anything. Changing your health care benefits from traditional Medicare coverage to non-traditional Medicare coverage can impact your care and what you may have to pay for health care services. Talk to your health care providers before you make any changes in your health care coverage.

In addition to installation of officers, Marj Nicholson’s daughter, Mindy Wendele, gave a moving talk about her mother’s life-long dedication to the volunteer program at the hospital. Marj was instrumental in the inception of the auxiliary and volunteered her services for more than 50 years. Dinner guests were also entertained by a very talented Schreiner University trio who Phyllis & Jack Spencer performed songs from a number of eras, much to everyone’s delight.
