Make it memorable at

I

s there a special occasion on your horizon—wedding or anniversary, birthday or retirement, corporate or organization meeting? Then Kerrville has the perfect place for your event.

Deanna Eixman 8 │ Jan-Feb 2016 │ KCP

“We do whatever it takes to host a unique and wonderful experience,” promises Blue Sage Hall Director Deanna Eixman.

a special space for your special event

Deanna

has the setting and the expertise to do just that. From a spacious 5,000 square-foot facility beautifully accented in Hill Country limestone and wood, to a native landscaped garden patio bordered by a meadow graced with live oaks. An artist’s touch

Deanna is a Texan from Jones Creek in the Gulf Coast’s Lake Jackson area. She, husband Ken, and son Kade now live in Hunt. “So I understand small towns,” explains Deanna. “And that’s what I love about the Kerrville area—it’s small enough that people here take time to be with each other. Blue Sage Hall wants to support that sociability with genuine hospitality.” At the beginning of her career as an artist, Deanna painted murals. That led to decorating for community events—many banquets, weddings, and Chamber of Commerce affairs. “God gifted me with a talent—whatever I see, I can paint,” Deanna confides. She eventually lived for thirteen years in Boulder, Colorado. “That introduced me to even more creative opportunities,” adds Deanna.

Multipurpose venue—pick your pleasure

Blue Sage Hall boasts both indoor and outdoor stages, plus a stateof-the-art sound system that well accommodates your band’s live music. Or you can choose to provide your own recorded music or tap into the Hall’s Pandora music stations. Indoor/outdoor speakers make it all sound fabulous. A projector and a 14x7-foot screen enable your guests to comfortably view photos and presentations. The roomy caterer’s kitchen allows for your chosen menu to be prepped and served, hot or cold, on-site. Brides love Blue Sage Hall—it can encompass the rehearsal dinner, the wedding, and the reception. Upstairs, a generous bride’s room awaits with space for makeup, hair styling, dressing, and perhaps a sip of champagne on the parlor’s couch prior to the ceremony. A nearby room can be used by the groom or can be designated as a photo booth area, or even a handy babysitting room for small children at your event. “Blue Sage Hall is hosting a Brides-To-Be Funday Sunday on January 24,” notes Deanna. “We’ll have a gathering on hand of local vendors to impress our brides with everything they’ll need to make their wedding dream come true—invitations, flowers, photography, cakes, catering, and even cars for hire.” continued on page 10

Don’t have a clue as where to begin with decorating for your special occasion? No problem—Deanna can provide you with delightful designs for floral arrangements, table settings, and party favors. Have your own ideas for decorating? No worries—Deanna makes sure those ideas are transformed into a stunning reality for you and your guests. “Blue Sage Hall offers event packages that can be tailored to fit every occasion,” Deanna assures. “And if we don’t already have what you need or provide a particular service, I can arrange for a variety of vendors, tastings, and showings right here. We want our clients to know they don’t have to go to San Antonio to plan a great event— Blue Sage Hall has it all and we support your vision.” KCP │ Jan-Feb 2016 │9

Community fun

Several regularly scheduled events keep the Blue Sage Hall calendar hopping. The second Sunday of each month from 3-6 p.m. provides a good time for the whole family at the Hill Country Jamboree with live music, dancing, and drawings for door prizes. According to Deanna, “Patterned after the popular old Hee Haw show, the Jamboree brings our community together with bands, singer songwriters, and story tellers.”

“Our hospice volunteers thoroughly enjoyed the setting at Blue Sage Hall. The accommodations were excellent and as volunteer coordinator, I must say that Deanna was a joy to work with and a huge help—even rolling up her sleeves to help. I highly recommend Blue Sage and its beautiful setting for any event, and pray that our community takes advantage of this facility.”

A BYOB affair with set-ups and snacks available, the Jamboree is normally $10 at the door. When held as a fundraiser, an additional $5 is collected for the cause. Local businesses participate as sponsors for these enjoyable gatherings.

Volunteer Manager, Rhonda Richter Peterson Hospice

Another entertaining event is the periodic Murder at the Blue Sage Hall Mystery Dinner. “Our next one is scheduled January 30 from 6-8 p.m. as a fundraiser for COTA—the Children’s Organ Transplant Association—and will benefit youngsters like Kerrville’s own liver transplant candidate Faith Mooney.”

“Blue Sage Hall offers the perfect ambient setting to compliment the relaxed nature of West Kerr County residents and visitors. And to further compliment the ambiance is Deanna’s relaxed demeanor in coordinating an absolute flawless event, particularly when she ‘calmly’ pulls a feather out of any hat during those last minute hiccup moments. We’ve hosted several events at Blue Sage Hall and will be back!”

A Blue Sage Hall Mystery Dinner is a bit like playing Clue— actors serve up guests with a good mystery to solve along with their delicious meal. Guest costumes are encouraged and a cash bar is available. Tickets are purchased in advance. And be sure to check out Blue Sage Hall’s Sip N Paints, also known as Merlot and Monet. Individuals as well as groups are invited to bring their favorite beverage and a friend to these hands-on instructive events. “We provide the canvases, paints, and brushes so everyone can create their own version of a painting that I step-by step lead the group through,” Deanna details. “After the class and what is often their first attempt at painting art, I like to think people see their world a little differently.” Plan your next memorable occasion at Blue Sage Hall—the community-focused multipurpose event center. Contact Deanna now for your appointment and let the fun begin. 830928-6162, Deanna@BlueSageHall.com, 3044 Junction Hwy, Kerrville/Ingram. You can follow Blue Sage Hall on Facebook to keep up with current events. Anne Schneider is a Kerrville writer and author of Breath Found Along The Way, a book of poetry and face-cast mask art. y s a Pe Ah, winter in the Hill Country.

So many birds to feed, but so cold outside. Filling feeders in the winter can sometimes be challenging. Filling feeders in 30 degree weather is not always something one wants to do. There is a solution of sorts—seed cylinders!

Call us today! www.KerrvilleWindowFashions.com KerrvilleWindowFashions@gmail.com 830-733-0041 407 Junction Highway, Kerrville, Texas 78028

Seed cylinders are seeds held in a cylindrical shape with gelatin. They are compact, dense and easy to use. There is a hole in the center of the cylinder which allows you to put it on different types of pin feeders. Some feeders have just the pin and others have a roof with perches. Whichever you choose depends on what types of birds you want to attract: clinging or ground feeding birds. A feeder without perches only accommodates clinging birds such as woodpeckers, chickadees, and titmice. One with perches is for ground feeding birds such as Cardinals. Seed cylinders come in a wide variety of flavors. Some are made of seed blends and others are made of straight seeds. Some cater to woodpeckers with suet nuggets. Those with straight safflower encourage Cardinals, house finches, and chickadees, but discourage the squirrels and raccoons. The same goes for cylinders that have capsaicin oil, known as a hot pepper variety. They also come in different sizes—small and large.

The reason this type of bird food is so attractive to us humans is that a small cylinder typically lasts up to a week, while the larger size can last two to three weeks. That means fewer treks out in the cold to keep your feathered friends happy. And that is a win-win for all concerned!

Happy Birding! Kevin & Linda Pillow are the proud owners of Wilds Birds Unlimited Nature Shop located at 855 Junction Hwy in Kerrville. Each staff member is a Certified Bird Feeding Specialist and can help you discover a refuge in your own backyard. 830-895-7393. KCP │ Jan-Feb 2016 │17

Friends don’t let friends by Marda N. Tayloe, Ph.D.

be couch potatoes.

Hunt, Texas, at the intersection

of Highway 39 and FM 1340, has one stop sign, three eating establishments, two churches, an excellent school, and several thriving small businesses, but no fitness center. Seven years ago this became a rallying point for Peni Foster, who transformed that deficiency into an opportunity for her neighbors to continue working toward their own personal bests.

How it works

Peni was involved in many local organizations, but she was not an exercise diva or a personal trainer. She had, however, been active in exercise classes for decades. She knew the physical, mental, and emotional benefits of regular physical activity. But she also understood that many members of the Hunt community simply weren’t going to commit themselves to an exercise program unless it was convenient, inexpensive, and wouldn’t make them feel conspicuously unfit. Encouraged by friends, she decided to get her neighbors up and moving.

From the original five participants, the class has expanded to thirtyfive members. Peni maintains an open-door, drop-in attitude–– everyone is welcome, whenever they can come, and everyone knows everyone else by name.

A week after announcing that she would begin leading Monday and Friday workout sessions, Peni held the first class in her carport. Five good friends showed up. The concrete exercise surface was a bit uncomfortable, but there was a lot of joking around, some mutual encouragement, and a few friendly challenges. An hour passed quickly, spent on aerobics, stretching, and strength training—using water bottles as weights. On Friday, eight friends showed up. Peni agreed to add Wednesdays to the workout schedule. “I innocently said ‘sure’ not fully realizing that I had just committed myself to three mornings a week… every week!” It soon became clear that the Fosters’ 10 x 20-foot concrete slab provided neither the space nor cushioning necessary to accommodate the growing number of Hunt-ites who wanted to participate. The Hunt Methodist Church offered to let the exercise group use its carpeted, air-conditioned Fellowship Hall, and they’ve been meeting there ever since. 20 │ Jan-Feb 2016 │ KCP

Since November of 2008, Peni has been leading exercise classes, free of charge, for any Hunt women who show up. Participants donate a small monthly amount to the church for carpet cleaning. Classes begin at 9 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. After a light warm-up, the group moves into aerobics, strength training––with or without weights––abdominal work, stretching, and neck work.

After the group had been active for about four years (and for unrelated reasons), the church brought in Liz Thomas, a Wesley nurse as a support to the overall community. Liz works out with the group when she can and helps supervise the process of checking the participants’ heart rates. Her husband, Dub Thomas, is a professional personal trainer and, Peni says, “He very kindly evaluated our class for us and said we were doing all the right things. That really made us feel good.” Participants range in age from fifties to late-seventies. Peni insists, “Above all I don’t want anyone to get hurt. We have people of diverse fitness levels, and I think everyone is acutely aware of their abilities and limitations. Several of us even have replaced parts (knees, shoulders, hips). To me those ladies are courageous and the best role models. I don’t want anyone to think she can’t participate because she can’t do something. If you can’t do one thing, try a modified version.”

November 2008, Early Days in the Fellowship Hall: Peni Foster is in the Pink Shirt (far left). One person uses water bottles as weights; another uses no weights at all.

What keeps it going

One reason the class is still so popular, and still has such an enthusiastic leader, is that the holistic benefits continue to accrue. Although Peni can’t be there all the time, she refuses to cancel classes. “I feel strongly about keeping up our momentum,” she says. “When I need to be away, if no one in the class is comfortable leading everyone else, the group employs a form of alternating leadership. It works and I applaud them.” “I am always trying to add new things to keep us fresh and stimulated,” says Peni. Participants also bring in new ideas they have read about in a magazine or seen on television. “Our numbers keep growing. I guess that’s the best affirmation that we are doing something right.” In addition to the physical and mental benefits of these on-going community exercise sessions, a strong support group has developed. The group includes several fitness devotees who challenge the others. A class clown or two keep people relaxed and occasionally laughing. Those who’ve braved surgery and continue to exercise provide inspiration. There’s a class “abinator” who calls out, “Use your abs” “Where are your abs?”

“I am always trying to add new things to keep us fresh and stimulated,” says Peni. Although abs of steel may not be in their future, this group of neighbors has developed an abiding regard for one another. They care about the welfare of their fellow participants. When someone isn’t feeling well or has a medical issue, or when a family member is ill, the word gets passed along. Two members of the group (photo below)––Janet Reinwald (row 3, in the green shirt) and Sharon Pilie (back corner in purple shirt)––are accomplished artists who have donated some of their hand-painted notecards for class members to sign and send to their colleagues. When someone returns from a trip, the group wants to hear all about it. Everyone knows how blessed they are to be in a community where people know and support each other. In Peni’s words, “They are so appreciative and forever thanking me for what I do. I always remind them that it is I who appreciate what they do for me.” Marda Tayloe moved to Hunt in 1999. She is president of Career Development, Inc., a consulting firm specializing in business communications (www.cdevelop.com).

Peni maintains an open-door, drop-in attitude– everyone is welcome, whenever they can come, and everyone knows everyone else by name. KCP │ Jan-Feb 2016 │21

Title Insurance industry welcomes 2016

by Diane Green

O

nce again, a new year is upon us. We set goals, make resolutions, and try to predict what lies ahead. While thinking about what lies ahead, I often turn to where we’ve been. By most accounts, the title insurance agency has traversed a difficult financial road the past few years. In 2007, we remember the mortgage disaster that swept the county. By 2010, though, the industry was heading in the right direction with home sales and mortgage loans on the rise. Thankfully this trend has continued. This past year, the mortgage and title insurance industries were faced with implementing additional federal regulations. Through education and training, we have been able to follow these guidelines and ensure that buyers, sellers, and borrowers can continue to secure their dream of homeownership.

Homeownership has and will continue to drive our economy. A title company’s primary job is to protect buyers, sellers, and lenders. We take our job seriously and uphold high standards when insuring real estate. As we all begin 2016, a year that offers hope and promise of good things to come, I wish you all peace and happiness. Our industry is ready to accept any challenges that may come our way. During the past eight years, we have all proven to be resilient, having successfully maneuvered through many storms and tumultuous times.

cover story by Anne Schneider

Living the

under

McDonald’s Golden Arches “Honest, hard work will always pay off.” An old-fashioned quote from the idyllic past? Not after thirty years of working in the McDonald’s restaurant system—this personal philosophy still rings true for Ronnie Young. 28 │ Jan-Feb 2016 │ KCP

Ronnie and his wife Tina began in 1997 with one McDonald’s franchise in Bonham, Texas. They since have owned and operated nine stores and now total five in the Houston Region, an area that includes the Texas Hill Country. Ronnie shares, “Many of McDonald’s franchisees were employees first.” And that includes Ronnie.

American Dream Starting up the ladder

“I grew up in San Antonio as an Air Force brat. During my high school years I had my first experience in restaurants, working for my uncle’s pizzeria—Papa Luigi’s,” says Ronnie. “And I met Tina in high school—we were seventeen and fourteen.” Tina adds, “My family moved to North Dakota, Ronnie went off to college, and we broke up shortly after that.” In the years before Ronnie and Tina would meet again, Ronnie sold shoes at Sears and drifted with an undeclared major through classes at the University of Texas at San Antonio. “I came to believe in merit,” states Ronnie. “I saw what happens when you dig in and work.” Ronnie next spent five years working for Famous Ramous Hot Dogs, first at San Antonio’s Ingram Park Mall and later in Abilene and Houston. He ended up at the Famous Ramous flagship store in Valley View Mall, North Dallas. “I actually ran two restaurants at the Mall’s food court,” Ronnie continues. “Then in 1985, McDonald’s came to the food court and I started working there. I did everything from flipping burgers and cashiering, to inventory, ordering, and staffing.” For over a decade Ronnie had the help of Ed Bailey, McDonald’s top franchisee in the U.S. Ronnie was Director of Operations for Ed and oversaw nineteen stores while with that company. “Ed was my mentor,” comments Ronnie. “He helped me every step of the way—I credit him with giving me the opportunity to become a franchisee.”

Stepping stones at McDonald’s

Twelve years after going their separate ways, Ronnie and Tina met up again in 1990 and married the following year. “That was twenty-four years ago,” recounts Tina. “And within six years of our marriage we bought our first McDonald’s franchise in Bonham and spent two and a half years there.” Ronnie and Tina then bought two franchises in Marble Falls. Two and a half years later, they sold those to come to Kerrville in 2002. The Youngs took over and revitalized three McDonald’s in Kerrville. Over the past thirteen years they built one more in Kerrville, followed by one in Junction and one in Fredericksburg. “We worked hard and we worked smart, proving that jobs in fast-food restaurants can be stepping stones,” Ronnie confides. “Operating five restaurants in a widespread region is not an easy job, and it wouldn’t be possible without our dedicated managers and employees. Of our 200 employees, many have moved up in management. We enjoy long-term employees that started as crew members.” continued on page 30

Supervisor Yolanda Pasillas, Amanda Arguelles (Andrew’s fiancé), Andrew, Tina, and Ronnie Young with Ronald McDonald.

“I have known Ronnie Young for twenty-five years. I was Ed Bailey’s Operations Consultant during the time that Ronnie was his Operations Manager. Our relationship continued when Ronnie became the Owner Operator of his first restaurant in Bonham, Texas. I was his Field Service Manager when he purchased restaurants in Kerrville. Ronnie is a “hands on” Owner Operator. He is in his restaurants on a daily basis. He has grown sales in each of his restaurants through his relentless focus on QSC and Guest Satisfaction. Over the years I have witnessed his dedication in giving back to the communities where he owns restaurants. McDonald’s has given Ronnie numerous awards—recognizing him for his results.” Louis Pekar Operations Consultant McDonald›s USA, LLC KCP │ Jan-Feb 2016 │29

... it wouldn’t be possible without our dedicated managers and employees. Yolanda Pasillas is a great example of this focused work ethic. “Twenty-two years ago I began as a crew member on the grill. From there I worked my way up to manager. Now I am a supervisor for the Youngs—McDonald’s is a good company with good opportunities. “Ronnie and Tina are very nice to work for,” adds Yolanda. “And during the past four years that I’ve been with them, we’ve had little employee turnover—their restaurants offer an enjoyable environment to work in.”

Family and community

The Youngs have five grown children and at some point, all but one have worked at McDonald’s. “Three of our sons attended McDonald’s Hamburger University in Oak Brook, IL,” Ronnie recalls. “Hamburger U is the global center of excellence for McDonald’s operations training and leadership development.” Twins Joe and Chris each went their own way—Joe into the theater industry and Chris as a director of the Berlitz School of Language.

Kristen works at home with two young children and Jacob is a top trainer for Gold’s Gym and is beginning an acting career. He’s been married to wife Beth for one year. “Only Andrew chose to follow in his dad’s footsteps and make a career of it,” confirms Tina. “Now a supervisor for our company, he is engaged to be married to Amanda Arguelles and plans to be a franchisee in the near future. Gratefully, with the help of our supervisors Andrew and Yolanda, ‘Mac Daddy’ Ronnie maintains first-rate operations at our five McDonald’s within the Houston Region.” You won’t often see Tina in the restaurants, as she stays busy in the office and handles their local marketing. She also works part time in the realty business—ten years with Bitkower Real Estate. Tina labors to make sure McDonald’s participates fully in the community. “I schedule Ronald McDonald to visit our schools and community centers with his educational messages and magic shows—it’s a lot of fun.”

Ronald McDonald puts on his show at the Kroc Center.

“I came to believe in merit,” states Ronnie. “I saw what happens when you dig in and work.”

Daniels Elementary principal Amy Billieter verifies, “The Youngs, whose sons attended Daniels, are so generous with our students—regularly bringing Ronald McDonald to over 200 kindergarteners and first and second graders. His entertaining shows focus on character building with themes like helping others, showing respect, anti-bullying, and co-operation. “The Youngs also support us with things like buying Daniels’ Spring Fling tickets and providing McDonald’s coupons for free ice-cream as student awards—they are truly fine citizens in our community.” Additionally, Tina involves McDonald’s with two important charities—the Ronald McDonald House and The Salvation Army. Executive Director of San Antonio’s Ronald McDonald House Pat Bivin shares, “Ronald McDonald House is a home away from home for critically ill children and their families while the children receive medical treatment. Ronnie, Tina, and their son Andrew are very supportive of our three San Antonio houses—often assisting at our special events and fundraising.

Kerrville Kroc Center Director of Operations Molly Putnam details the Youngs’ involvement. “We are fortunate to be working with them for the fourth year of Ronald McDonald magic shows for our kids summer camp—and it’s hilarious fun for us all. “The Youngs also sponsor many of our programs and help fund Kroc Center scholarships. Every so often they surprise us with coupons for free McDonald’s food and Sea World and Fiesta Texas tickets for our Boys and Girls Club and the staff—the Youngs really support the Krocs’ original vision for communities.” Ronnie and Tina conclude, “We really have enjoyed our thirteen years of doing business here—living in the Hill Country is a dream and we are blessed to call this place home. t’s that time of year again that makes any true gardener cringe with illness, or even wide-open anger against those professionals with a pair of pruners in their hands, or worse, a chainsaw. No, I’m not talking about people harming others. It’s Crape Murder time! Like all ornamental trees, late winter pruning is the best time to shape and trim. Unfortunately sometimes people don’t purchase and plant trees anticipating the final growth of the tree. If you want a tree that only grows to ten feet, then buy one that does. Please don’t try to keep a twenty foot tree to ten feet. That’s the first step to Crape Murder.

of a tree to lower it, remember this. The nubs you have created will branch out into long, thin whips that will be weak. These branches will be more prone to insects and disease. If you must take out a large branch, try to take out the entire branch, again flush with the trunk. It’s okay to remove old seed heads and small branches inside the tree for more air circulation. If it’s a very large tree and you don’t want to climb a ladder, don’t worry. Mother Nature has a way with doing her own pruning! So how do you commit this heinous act? As a general rule with Crape Myrtles, you should never cut a branch larger than your pinkie finger. All branches should be cut flush to the trunk. If you cut out the top

Why Box Dye is the WORST!

The temptation. Your roots are crazy, your stylist is booked. The women on the boxes have such shiny and vibrant hair. It only costs $12.99! And you don’t have to spend a morning in the salon! So cheap, so convenient. After all, your stylist is totally over charging you, right? Wrong! Shocker, colorists want to make a good living just like everyone else, but that is not why we tell you to stop using box dye. We tell you this because box dye is literally destroying your hair. Slowly, stealthily, over time. Like a hydrogen peroxide ninja. Knowledge is power, so let’s break down exactly how box dyes work versus professional dyes.

more damaged. Especially with the darker colors, it may eventually be impossible to change, even with professional lightener. Box dye changes the physical makeup of your hair, making strands weaker and the color much harder to change should you get tired of your hue. I love hair color. But, it is a commitment! Make sure you have the time and money to invest once you decide you want a change. If you’re not sure, book a consultation with your colorist. They can make sure that you get the right kind of color to fit your budget and schedule. Just don’t go down that box color aisle. Please. Katie has been in the beauty industry for more than 20 years. She is a member of the Rusk Color Team, owner and stylist at Tin Star Salon. 319 Earl Garrett in Kerrville. Call her at 895-5030.

Professional Color. Deposits color molecules on the inside of the hair cuticle where the natural melanin lives. These molecules are larger and more numerous than your natural melanin, so they end up taking over and becoming the dominant color. Box. Stains the proteins in the cortex, changing their chemical makeup. Since hair is about 90% protein, this means that your hair is basically no longer your hair. It has now been physically changed.

100% of our greeting cards, magnets, candles and most of our clothing are made in the USA.

Professional Color. Custom-mixed according to your needs.

Call it art, alchemy, or just a lovely science experiment, but your colorist mixes your color just for you. This means that the developer (hydrogen peroxide) is chosen based on the strength your hair needs. If your hair is fine or porous, your colorist will likely choose a lower strength, which will be gentler and leave your hair in the best possible condition.

Box. Uses the highest developer. Because this

color formula is meant for literally everyone, it will include the most potent chemicals. It’s like setting yourself on fire when you just need to put on a jacket.

Nothing Ever Over $24!

Professional Color. Stops working after a certain amount of

time. The potency of these colors is meant to diminish slowly after they are mixed, and usually stop working altogether after an hour. This is why your colorist mixes bowls as she goes. It also means that once the product has been applied and processed, it’s done.

Box. Keeps working over time. These are called “progressive” dyes because they keep processing and building on themselves over time. So every time you apply, you hair is going to get darker and

PRMC Volunteer Auxiliary by Judy Jones

Elouise’s Legacy . . . Some years back, Elouise Huff, a PRMC Auxiliary Volunteer and a talented seamstress, saw a need and created a design for what she called “Hip-Pockets” a compartmentalized pair of cloth attachments which could be tied to the walkers of total joint replacement patients. One attachment held necessities like Kleenex, billfolds, keys, cell phones, etc., eliminating the need for purses or wallets. The other attachment held a “grabber,” which assisted patients with picking up small items and dressing accessories. Response from recipients was enthusiastic and heart-warming, and Elouise was kept busy cutting and stitching.

The “Giver Bees”: Standing: Carol Pope, Janice Fletcher, Donna Boudreaux, Linda Arnold, Myrna Flannery, and PRMC Auxilians Beverly Bond and Nancy Olive. Seated: Gwendolynne Skinner, Lynda Thompson, Kathleen Neutzler. Not pictured: Karen Kennedy

When Elouise passed away in 2015, her loss left a gap in the production of the “Hip-Pockets.” Ann Van Alst, a PRMC employee and member of the Hill Country Quilters Guild, inquired if her group might assist the PRMC Auxiliary with this project. These “Giver Bees” as they call themselves, meet twice a month and have recently made and given 500 pillowcases for the Medina Children’s Home, and quilts and Christmas stockings for the Hill Country Youth Ranch. They also make Bereavement Pillows for Peterson Hospice. Every item they make is donated to a charity.

We are so gratified by this partnership and the skillful assistance of the Hill Country Quilters Guild. Our patients are most appreciative, and Eloise would be greatly pleased! New Year, New You by Dr. Leigh Ann Grasso, RPh & Dr. Melissa Elias, RPh

ow that the holidays are over, many of us turn to our New Year’s resolutions to lose weight and get healthier. Weight loss starts with your diet. For many people this is the most difficult part, as our appetites often win out over our willpower; however, there are ways to increase your chances of success. Keeping a food diary can help you track your intake and stay accountable to yourself. For a sweet treat at the end of your meal, opt for some fresh fruit over sugar-filled desserts. Try an extra scoop of vegetables to help forgo the carb-laden bread. These simple changes can keep you satisfied longer because of their high fiber and water content. If cravings are still getting the best of you, Xymogen’s Appe-Curb™ can help to curb your appetite by reducing carbohydrate and alcohol cravings. This formula uses several key amino acids including 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) and DL-phenylalanine (DLPA), which support the biosynthesis of neurotransmitters that affect appetite control and mood. Try not to waste your calories on sugar-filled beverages; switch to water or unsweetened tea. Green tea, in particular, has been studied because of its potential health benefits, including help with weight management. However, you need to consume 5-10 cups a day of this powerful antioxidant to see these health benefits. If you would prefer to forgo the tea

and take a capsule, Xymogen’s Green Tea 600™ can help boost your weight loss efforts. Weight loss can be challenging, so don’t beat yourself up if you slip up; just make sure to get back on track so you can keep moving forward. Be sure to talk to your doctor or pharmacist before starting any diet or exercise routine to make sure it is right for you. Annie’s Apothecary carries the supplements Appe-Curb™ and Green Tea 600™. Annie’s Apothecary is the only PCAB-accredited compounding pharmacy in Kerrville and the surrounding areas.

Dr. Leigh Ann Grasso, RPh, owner of Annie’s Apothecary and Boerne compounding pharmacist, earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Texas College of Pharmacy in 2004. Living with Hospice and Reiki The number of hospice care agencies in the US totals an estimated 4,000. They provide care for approximately 1.5 million patients in an aging society. Our community is fortunate to have a variety of hospice care options. Skilled caregivers offer support to individuals nearing the end of life and make a significant difference, not only for their patients, but also for the families and loved ones of the person on hospice. Around the world, Reiki is being used as a valuable tool for supporting the hospice process. A natural therapy that promotes relaxation and an easing of challenging symptoms—both physical and emotional—Reiki is simple to learn and easy to practice. This integrative treatment can provide pain relief, allowing recipients to rest more comfortably. Reiki offers an effective way to smooth their passing. For the caregivers themselves—whether they are professionals or among the patient’s family—a Reiki session bestows the benefits of relaxing, rebalancing, and refreshing. Anne Schneider is a Kerrville Reiki Master with over nine years of experience. Mike and I approached Diane Ferrell at Kerr County People Magazine because we wanted to promote and expose our business, MR Home Automation, and we also wanted to explain and bring a better understanding about home automation in general. We chose Kerr County People Magazine because of the distribution, locations of distribution and the likability of the magazine throughout the community. Mike and I strongly feel that our goals were met during the run of the March/April issue that featured MR Home Automation. We were extremely pleased with the overall delivery and with Diane’s team who worked on our feature. The photographer, Michael Anglin with Artifex 42, shot and developed an amazing cover photo and group photo. We appreciated his vision, direction, professionalism and friendliness. Anne Schneider, the writer of the article, really grasped what Mike and I wanted to get across to the readers. She delivered it in a clear and understandable way. From the beginning, Kerr County People Magazine made the whole process extremely easy and stress free. The results from advertising in Kerr County People Magazine exceeded our expectations. If you are a business owner who would like more exposure for your company or a community organization that would like to generate awareness, Mike and I would definitely recommend advertising in this magazine.
