Baby
on Board The
by Kathleen Cook
“Baby on Board” slogan takes on new meaning for anyone who is trying to balance the needs of running a business with the needs of a new baby. In June 2017, when we last interviewed Hester Window Coverings owners Kim and Mike Russ, they happily were anticipating the birth of their daughter Isabelle. Now, two years later, we’re checking in again with the Russes to discover how business and family life changed with the newest addition to Hester’s staff.

Hester Window Coverings’
newest staff member brings fresh perspective Alterations to business as usual
At first glance Hester Window Coverings’ showrooms look as expected with a huge array of beautiful examples of window treatment designs displayed in home and office settings. But a second look reveals a world of tiny toddler furniture and colorful play equipment sprinkled around the edges. For the interview, Kim greets me at the door with Isabelle in her arms. Izzy has the sniffles that morning and is on her way to naptime under the watchful eye of sales consultant, Amber Newberry. As Kim leads me to her adjoining office, I am struck by her poise and calmness even though her daughter is fussy and might be developing a cold. The possibility of distractions wouldn’t be surprising. Just before I start with my list of questions, Amber pops in looking for Izzy’s favorite blanket. “The only way I could do this at all,” Kim gestures broadly, “is with the help of the wonderful, attentive people we have here at Hester’s. We are a family. Izzy loves everyone and they love her. We’re not asking our employees to be babysitters at all, but Mike and I are so fortunate to be able to have this kind of support when we bring our daughter to work with us.” What seems like an effortless start to Kim’s morning this interview day actually was prepared for early on in Kim’s pregnancy. “The first thing we needed to do was to make adjustments in how we organize our time between work and home. And we wanted to have everything in place before the baby came. When we bought Hester’s in 2015, we were so fortunate to have a long-established business with a competent, professional staff already in place,” Kim states.
“We could then concentrate on growing the business. We also were integrating into Hester’s space Mike’s already-established company, MR Home Automation (Smart Homes). “The first step was to get more hours in my day. We hired another design and sales consultant, Amber Newberry, who could take over one of my more time-consuming roles so I could focus on marketing. Second, we relied on the business model that we knew worked best for us: trust in the experience and knowledge of our staff, letting them do their best work together, without our need to micromanage. Third, we think like a team. Our staff is included in every step. All the jobs, current and future, are posted on our huge wall calendar so everyone can see exactly what is scheduled and where we are in each step of a client’s project.” And a fourth preparation step for running a business with a baby? Kim says, “Asking for assistance from our big nearby family. We are blessed that Mike’s parents, Rudy and Cindy Russ, and his sister Sissy and her daughters, Cierra and Bayleigh all live just down the road from us. When it’s big brother Peyton Russ’ a.k.a. ‘Bubba’s’ time to be with Isabelle, her eyes light up when she runs towards him happily shouting, ‘Bubba, Bubba!’ “Being together as a family is so important to us. Izzy is growing up with the love of grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and Bubba. We also take advantage of the excellent community programs for children like Children’s Day Out at Trinity Baptist Church and First United Methodist Church, story time at the Butt-Holdsworth library, and Peggy Anne CeCe Jean Dance.” Continue to next page

Hallmarks of a new business model
Since Isabelle’s birth, Kim and Mike have added to their list of “business with baby” skills. Kim elaborates, “Manage time, be prepared, ask for help, be flexible when the unexpected happens (and it will), enjoy every minute, and laugh at ourselves. We’re not trying to be super-hero parents, but we want to be the best parents for Izzy—and to be the best window covering business in the Hill Country.” For over sixty years Hester Window Coverings has been known for its quality products and high commitment to giving excellent customer service. As the newest owners, Kim and Mike carry on that tradition. Kim explains, “We offer the finest name brands for every budget in draperies, blinds, shades, and shutters. And they are featured in our showroom so our clients can inspect and operate them. We are a time-honored, full-service window treatment store and our customers know they can count on receiving individualized custom care from the beginning to the end of their project.
Kim continues, “We enjoy working with homeowners as well as builders, interior designers, realtors, commercial businesses, and schools—a few include James Avery, The Dietert Center, Ken Stoepel Ford, Augusta Vin Winery, and Texas Hill Country Bank.”
At the close of our interview I ask Kim about the several equestrian and race horse photographs on her For over sixty office wall. Kim answers, “I was born and raised in and started riding at an early age and years Hester Connecticut competed in hunter/jumper events. I spent the Window summer at the Saratoga track. I was a ‘hot walker.’ horses got off the track from exercising/ Coverings has When racing my job was to walk them around and cool been known them off with water.”
for its quality products.
“Our talented design specialists, Aniela-Dyer Smith and Amber Newberry, are skilled in helping our customers select just the right drapes, blinds, and shades for their homes or offices. They will get to know you— your personal style, color preferences, and budget.
“Their practiced eyes can help you narrow down the myriad choices to achieve the perfect window treatment for you. They come to your location to measure for your order and we guarantee it’s right. Our two full-time experienced installers, Mario Banda and Brian Schopen, ensure that you will be truly satisfied with the results.” Options don’t end with interior window treatments. Hester Window Coverings can order attractive canvas and metal awnings to make outdoor enjoyment of your patios and decks even more pleasant. And Hester’s is the expert on exterior motorized screen shades that allow the outdoors to become a more enjoyable part of Hill Country living.
“
“Living in the Hill Country is all about the views,” adds Kim. “Our customers want to enjoy their views in early mornings and late afternoons sheltered from the sun and wind. And Hester’s also is the only place in Kerrville that builds exterior window screens in-house. We custom build any size screens and install them. We also repair screens and shades.”
Kim’s knowledge of the special bond between rider and horse led her to be a program director for a therapeutic horseback riding program, specializing in horses helping people overcome physical, emotional, and learning challenges. Will Izzy learn to ride? Kim smiles. “She already loves horses, especially her Shetland pony, Scooby, so we’ll have to see where she takes that.”
Looking to the future

They are committed to transforming the blank stare of empty windows into a beautiful reflection of your personal style with window treatments that create a lasting and stunning impression. “I rely on Hester’s Window Coverings for most of our company’s window covering needs. They are very knowledgeable, have excellent service, and understand the importance of getting the job done right and on time. Kim is great with asking the right questions to make sure things get ordered properly and their installers are very conscientious, detail oriented and do excellent work! I’m especially glad Hester’s is a local Kerrville Business.”—Kim Marks, James Avery Jewelry, Facility Design Manager

or more than eight years, an extended family of cats has called the area between HEB’s parking lot and Francisco Lemos Street “home.” Over the years, a varied group of compassionate citizens and veterinarians from our community have fed and provided spay/neuter and emergency medical care to these cats. Everyone in Kerrville shops at HEB and many have encountered the “HEB cats” at some time––some folks even sit and share their lunches with the kitties. They’ve watched these cats grow up over the years and care about their well-being. Now HEB’s planned store expansion will destroy the only home these kitties know and threaten them with a precarious future.
“We provide the cats with medical care and a safe environment so they can live the remainder of their days in peace.” Lyndsey Powers with sanctuary resident Gina. 16| JULY-AUGUST 2019 | KERR COUNTY PEOPLE MAGAZINE
The graceful Miss Ellie.
Recently, volunteers at Rainbow Journey, a never-kill, cagefree sanctuary for cats, have begun trapping the HEB cats and relocating them to the sanctuary in south Kerrville. There, the twenty or so new rescues will join about sixty other abandoned and feral cats now housed at this lifetime care shelter. “The majority of our early cats came to us from Kerr County Animal Services,” explains Lyndsey Powers, president of Rainbow Journey. “Many were unadoptable due to age or medical conditions and were scheduled for euthanasia. In 2018, Animal Services euthanized 670 unwanted cats and kittens. Others have come from TNR (trap, neuter, return) colonies around Kerrville. Some were abandoned by families who moved away and left their former pets behind to fend for themselves.”
The welcoming committee. “We hope to raise $8,000 to cover these costs, plus vet bills for neutering and vaccinating the cats,” Lyndsey says. “The amazing response we’ve gotten so far from friends, neighbors, and even total strangers has renewed my faith in the kindness and generosity of the people in our community.” Continue to page 18
Providing hospice care for homeless cats
Just as many people require hospice care during the final stages of life, homeless cats also struggle with end-of-life issues such as pain, loneliness, fear, and health problems. Like people, they need food, shelter, security, and kindness. “At Rainbow Journey we address these issues with compassion and endless love,” Lyndsey explains. “We provide the cats with medical care and a safe environment so they can live the remainder of their days in peace––everything they need to ease their final journey. None will die alone.” The sanctuary has been operating continuously since 2013. In 2017, it incorporated as Rainbow Journey, a recognized 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. It’s situated on five quiet acres, a portion of which is enclosed with special cat fencing to keep the rescued cats in and predators out. Three heated and air-conditioned buildings provide the cats with comfort and security. To accommodate the newcomers displaced by HEB’s expansion, Rainbow Journey urgently needs to expand its fenced space and add another temperature-controlled building to avoid overcrowding.
Ninety-four-year-old volunteer Margaret Brokaw enjoys time with the kitties.

Sharing a lifelong love of animals
When she was seven-years-old, Lyndsey told her mother–– who also loved cats––not to get too attached to the idea of grandchildren because she intended to devote her life to helping animals. Two weeks later she came home with her first stray. She’s been caring for animals in need ever since. “I never planned to have an animal shelter,” Lyndsey says. “When I was a kid, I wanted to be a vet.” But when she and her husband, Matthew Thurlow, moved to Kerrville in 2016 they quickly realized that Lyndsey’s elderly father––who’d been running the shelter––desperately needed help. Unlike other animal care facilities in the Hill Country, Rainbow Journey, as it came to be known, receives no funding from the government, philanthropic organizations, or other sources. And except for occasional assistance from a few volunteers, Lyndsey and her family shoulder all the costs and work related to the shelter’s operation.
economic benefits of community-sponsored spay/neuter programs. TNR plays an important role in the management of feral colonies in our area and reduces the euthanasia rate.” To teach kids about the plight of homeless cats, Lyndsey has written a children’s book titled 17 Cats Sitting in a Tree. The story is told from the cats’ perspective and explains how kids can help. The free e-book can be downloaded from Rainbow Journey’s website. For more information, visit RainbowJourney.org or contact Lyndsey at 978-994-9109. Donations may be made through the website or by sending checks to Rainbow Journey, 317 Sidney Baker South, Ste. 400–107, Kerrville.
As Shelly Sandy of Hill Country Animal Advocates points out, “By providing a no-kill, end-of-life haven for both TNR community cats and unadoptable strays with medical or age-related challenges, Rainbow Journey is an essential piece of the puzzle in Kerr County.” “One of our goals,” Lyndsey says, “is to educate animal owners, children, and community leaders about the effectiveness and

That’s what Mack Barham, retired physician from Louisiana and resident of Hunt, manifested while in Iceland, October 2017. And it earned him first place in The Hill Country Camera Club Outside-Judged Contest 2019—a photo contest judged by
“Wearing knee boots I ran out into the surf, set up my tripod, shot a one-second exposure, and ran like hell back to the beach.”
“I took the swirl picture at Diamond Beach on the east coast of Iceland,” says Mack, “where a short river connects the Ice Lagoon to the ocean. The high incoming tide moved the glacial icebergs around like skittles. We had to dodge them.
To craft this photographic opportunity, Mack embarked on a 1200-mile drive on the ring road around Iceland. His traveling colleague was Raul Touzon, National Mack Barham Geographic Photographer. When shown Mack’s swirl image Raul remarked, “Now that is a photo!”

Patience required!

ow, more than ever, it seems that we expect instant gratification. Click a button and it’s on its way. It’s no different in the happy world of backyard bird feeding—most people bringing home a new feeder anticipate instant gratification. They fill it with tasty seeds and expect birds to be all over it before they get inside the house. Sometimes that actually happens, but most often it takes them some time to adapt to something new. Patience. As creatures of habit, they’ll continually visit a feeder that always has food because they know it’s a reliable food source. Same goes with birdbaths; they’ll visit one that always has clean, fresh water. When you introduce or move a new feeder, food or bath, it confuses them. They know what tree to stop in and have a look around before approaching a feeder or bath. They know when they are on the feeder which way to escape if there is a predator. A moved feeder or bath can throw them off. A general rule of thumb is that it can take up to two weeks for the birds to acclimate. Patience. This rings true with even putting something in the exact same spot as the old one. The feeder might have different style ports, the new food might not have shells or the bath may be taller and deeper. All these things require their testing it out. Once they find that all is okay, they’ll tell their friends. Patience. This doesn’t mean you can’t move your feeders and baths, it just means patience is the name of the game. They will find it. Promise. Getting a new feeder, bath or food that the birds aren’t coming to right away doesn’t mean it doesn’t work, it means practicing patience. This patience thing isn’t much fun, but if you hang in there, they will come!
Happy Birding!

High Cholesterol?
C
by Sabrina Griggs, RPH
holesterol has long been promoted as the “bogey man” of heart disease, largely by the makers of statin drugs. In truth, cholesterol is a necessary building block for cell membranes, adrenal cortex, sex hormones, and even bile. It is essential in intracellular transport, cell signaling, and nerve conduction. Inside the blood vessels, cholesterol serves as a patch when small leaks develop in the vessel walls. Excess inflammation of these walls can cause formation of excessive amounts of these plaques, restricting blood flow to a dangerous degree. Controlling this inflammation rather than reducing cholesterol is the key to cardiovascular health.
Statin drugs were first introduced in 1987, but a study of patients taking statins between 1997-2007 showed no major change in the incidence of coronary heart disease, stroke or other cardiac conditions. In 1984, a healthy cholesterol level was considered to be anything below 330. By 1994 that number was reduced to 200, and today the target is 160. In more than 30 years, cardiac health has not improved at nearly the rate of increase of statin drug sales. Statin drugs have been indicated
in greater risk of diabetes mellitus, neuropathy, reduction in hormone production, and mitochondrial DNA mutation which can lead to organ failure. Statins are also suspected in the increased risk of Alzheimer’s and other dementia. It is vitally important for patients who take statin drugs to also receive proper nutritional support by replacing CoQ10 in order to protect the heart, liver, muscles, cognitive function, and libido. Additionally, lifestyle changes which include a whole foods diet, physical activity, sufficient rest and stress management are the most effective answer to cardiac health. At the Apothecary Shoppe, we have the nutritional support you need and access to the best information to help you achieve your wellness goals. Sabrina Griggs, RPH, has thirty years of broadspectrum pharmaceutical and nutritional healthcare knowledge. She is the owner/ pharmacist at Apothecary Shoppe, 1228 Bandera Hwy, Kerrville. 830-257-0732.

Water Wisely by Trena Cullins
July and August are once again upon us and those temperatures are not likely to change anytime soon. Yes. It’s good ole’ summertime— time to adjust your watering, which is sometimes tricky. Just because it’s hot to us doesn’t mean you need to water. Plants perspire just like we do—excess water is released from them which causes wilting during hot afternoons. If it’s still drooping the next morning, it’s time to water. Watering too much is bad for the roots; roots tend to stay near the surface, which can cause root rot. Watering correctly forces roots to grow down into the soil, which makes them stronger. This is especially true for drought-resistant trees and shrubs. You may think watering in the afternoon is not a bad thing, after all, the sprinkler feels good on a hot afternoon. However,

if you irrigate in the evening you’re wasting water due to e va p o ra t i o n . The earth’s nighttime cooling makes morning watering much more efficient. Another watering wisely factor is to check your irrigation systems monthly. Please remember that a leaky system, or operating it just because you can, puts our most precious resource at risk. Water is life. Texas Master Certified Nursery Professional Trena Cullins (#4985) has been with The Plant Haus 2 for twenty years. Local Flavor— Texas artists’ works selected for you
T
his collection of Texas artisans’ works is not to be missed. Nestled in historical downtown Kerrville, Slate Gray Gallery brings together some of the best Texas has to offer.
Carold Arnold
John Self
Look for jewelry designs by Ansara Jewelry—these pieces sparkle with international flair, yet Sara Rydberg handcrafts them right here in the Texas Hill Country. You’ll also discover fine art paper pastels by Carol Arnold who was recently featured in Southwest Art Magazine as one of the top ten artists to know in Texas. She describes herself as a colorist who works in contemporary realism. Shifting to photography, Davide CM is a Texas-born artist who studied in Italy and the UK. His photos depict the 2011 fire in Bastrop, Texas, and upon looking closely one might discover beauty in the burn zone. Karen Freeman is an architect by academics, but worked with builders and designers when she lived in New York. Her strokes are geometrical, rich with color and form, bringing that NYC flavor to Texas. Comparatively, Douglas Garey’s hand-forged barbecue tools, washers, and bottle openers reveal the true beauty of black smithery—a must see. Fredericksburg painter Katherine Lott works with a number of mediums, including textiles, cold wax, metallics, clay, and paper. Her subjects range from abstract to ethereal landscapes. While Susu Meyer recently moved to the Hill Country and her oil paintings correspond to her amazement of nature. In her works patrons can experience the movement of water and wind. New to Slate Gray Gallery, Austin resident Cameron Cone’s photography astounds any art lover with layers of color and imagery. Eric Pohl, also a new photographer whose motto is “available anywhere there is light,” exhibits his photos and his book, Texas Hill Country—a Scenic Journey, in the gallery.
Richard Rouse
Sculptor Richard Rouse exhibits his “Steampunk Guitar Series” and illuminated mechanical sculptures. He forages for “endless castaways from another era” and integrates these into new creations. And Slate Gray’s highly collectible artist John Self, an assemblage sculptor who began as a painter and now sculpts, uses everyday objects to reimagine a new story. He favors three subjects: fish, masks, and worldly “travel” suitcases. Stop by soon and enjoy the art. Slate Gray Gallery is a contemporary art gallery with a mission to promote, connect, and engage regional and global artists with patrons and enthusiasts. Shop local and know all profits are donated to local arts advocacy groups.

Help Safeguard the People and Possessions That Matter Most Build a Triangle of Protection® Around Your Home and Family
H
ow would you and your family cope financially if you became ill or injured and couldn’t work, if your home were seriously damaged, or if you died unexpectedly? If you’re not sure where the money would come from, we can help you identify the protection you may need to help keep your family and home secure. Your State Farm® agent can put together a triangle of protection for you—life, disability income, and homeowner’s insurance. A Triangle of Protection, A Reasonable Solution
Your homeowner’s insurance policy is a great first step toward protecting your home and possessions. But it’s only one part of your financial picture. Too many people lose their homes because they don’t have insurance coverage that provides funds in case of death or disability. We can help you establish a triangle of protection that includes: • Life insurance, which may be used to help pay off your mortgage and keep your family in your home if you die prematurely • Disability income insurance, which may help you make mortgage payments if you’re unable to work due to a covered disability
by Amber Thomason
Do You Have Enough Life Insurance?
Ask yourself how much your family will need after your death to meet immediate expenses — and then how much they’ll need long-term to maintain their standard of living. Do you have enough life insurance to help your family cover outstanding bills, pay off a mortgage, fund a retirement, or cover a child’s education?
Are You Covered for a Disabling Injury or Illness?
Many people underestimate the risks of becoming disabled, and aren’t prepared financially for the months or years it may take to recover. In fact, 1 in 5 Americans live with a disability, and 1 in 10 Americans live with a severe disability. If you stopped earning an income because of an injury or illness, could you pay your mortgage? What about expenses like child care, utilities, groceries, credit card payments, and medical bills? Disability income insurance is another critical piece of the triangle of protection because it can help you and your family cover these costs. Ask your State Farm agent about the coverage available for you. Amber Thomason and her staff have over 15 years of insurance and financial service experience and would love the opportunity to earn your business. Come home to a local agent that is dedicated to the life and needs of her customers. 221 Thompson Dr., Kerrville. 830-315-5433.

The Natural Pain Management Therapy
P
ain comes in all sorts of packages—typically headaches, backaches, sensitive feet, and sore joints. For an estimated 100 million Americans, pain is chronic. It robs us of our vitality and our capacity to participate fully in life. Medications and surgery may help in some cases, but they come with considerable side effects and risks.
Consider a natural approach to pain relief—Reiki is a hands-on, non-invasive therapy that catalyzes your body’s organic ability to heal itself. This integrative healing technique makes Reiki the perfect complement for traditional medical practices. Reiki can reduce the amount of necessary drug therapy and speed the recovery time for required surgeries—all the while, assisting pain relief by natural means. With Reiki you can feel relaxed, refreshed, and better able to cope with your condition. To promote your wellness the natural way contact Anne Schneider, a Kerrville Reiki Master with thirteen years experience and a member of The Reiki Alliance—an international organization of traditional Reiki Masters. Schedule your appointment today at her Ventana Al Cielo Studio. Reiki is easy to learn over one weekend at Anne’s ten-hour Reiki I training. Contact Anne now to attend one of her next training workshops July 26-28 or August 23-25. Learn how to practice Reiki on yourself and, if you choose, on others— including pets.
