“When was the last time your insurance agent bought you dinner?” asks Ray Bob Frizzell of Kerrville’s Frizzell Insurance. He’s guessing your answer is never—unless you’re fortunate enough to be one of his Germania Insurance policy owners. 12 | MAR-APR 2017 | KERR COUNTY PEOPLE MAGAZINE

A Frizzell family tradition

For the past sixteen years, Ray Bob and his wife Betty Sue have hosted an appreciation dinner for their clients who are members of the largest Texas farm mutual company, Germania Insurance. Since its beginning in 1896, Germania has joined Texans together to help support each other’s needs. “Farm mutuals are owned by policy holders,” explains Ray Bob, “members who meet their own always-changing needs. Local chapters elect directors from their membership and hold annual meetings.” Ray Bob continues, “The idea for hosting an annual appreciation dinner came from the old days when neighbors all knew each other and gathered to share a meal. That’s why our yearly gathering is not your typical business meeting or a sales event. We host this dinner every year so I can personally thank each Germania member with a handshake and bless continued on page 14 them for placing their trust with us.”

“We host this annual party and invite all our Germania policy holders,” shares Ray Bob. “It’s something we’ve done since we started our agency in 2000. Betty Sue Frizzell, the locally elected Chapter President and always on hand at these parties, helps make sure dinner guests enjoy themselves and their meal. Each year, Germania’s District Director Bruce Germer comes from Lockhart to attend the Frizzell’s festivities, as well. “It’s a first-class event and it shows in the way people love the party,” says Bruce. “I really enjoy watching Ray Bob’s interaction with his guests—he’s told me before that he tells his customers ‘if you’re a customer, you’re a friend—and that makes you a friend first.’”

The appreciation celebration

“We host this annual party and invite all our Germania policy holders,” shares Ray Bob. “It’s something we’ve done since we started our agency in 2000. The dinner’s venue needs soon outgrew our office space and over the years we’ve needed larger and larger places to hold the gathering.” Anticipating 100 to 150 guests this year, the party menu will feature a delicious dinner of fajitas with all the trimmings.

On hand to greet guests will be the renowned friendly Frizzell staff—Sharon Wood, Susan Cathey, and agent James Williamson—happy to see the people they assist on a daily basis. “We always hand out great door prizes, too, all the way down to the table decorations,” Ray Bob concludes. “This year we’ll offer insulated tote bags, caps, not-your-usual-yardsticks, and a really nice surprise for all our guests. Everyone will leave with a bag of goodies and a full stomach.” The annual party’s good food, friends, and fun, carries on the Frizzell tradition of serving Texans with the very best. For a one-stop approach for all your insurance needs, contact Frizzell Insurance today. 830-895-2213, 1130 Junction Hwy #300 (in the Security State Bank building), Kerrville, raybob@ frizzellandcompany.com.

Ask The Pastor By Anne Schneider

No matter what faith we choose to profess or church we prefer to join, we all have questions. And we each formulate questions based on our own personal experiences, observations, and reading. Reverend Joshua Sullivan, Pastor of Kerrville’s Holy Cross Lutheran Church, connects your questions with answers from the Bible in his innovative videos—Ask The Pastor.

Email your questions to ATPHolyCross@gmail.com

30 | MAR-APR 2017 | KERR COUNTY PEOPLE MAGAZINE

IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

Taking it to the people Reverend Sullivan explains, “Ask The Pastor emerged out of necessity—during a time in my ministry the need arose for me to take secondary employment. I worked part time in the HEB fish market. People there would find out I was a pastor and ask me a question that to answer, really needed a more appropriate venue. I constantly felt like I was practicing driveby theology.” So Pastor Sullivan set up an “Ask The Pastor” Gmail account through Holy Cross’ Facebook page and started receiving questions via emails. “I found I could answer people’s questions more thoroughly—give an honest, thoughtful response—no longer short-changing them with quick on-thefly answers,” says the Pastor. In response to one of those questions submitted by email four years ago, Reverend Sullivan posted his first Ask The Pastor video on the church’s Facebook page.

subscribers and have received around 40,000 views—including viewers from Brazil, Denmark, and Russia.”

Family in every sense

When the Reverend first began, Ask The Pastor videos ran about five minutes long. The current shows extend approximately ten minutes.

Answering the 2008 Holy Cross Lutheran Church congregation’s call for a pastor, Reverend Sullivan with his wife Erin moved to Kerrville and made it their home.

“If an answer is too complex for one video, I’ll break the answer up into multiple videos so that folks can easily grasp the main points.”

The Pastor concludes, “The Lord led me to take this position at Holy Cross—it was the best decision I’ve ever made.”

Content for Ask The Pastor videos is user generated and question driven. Episodes include a variety of topics. Subjects explored in past shows include forms of worship, why so many denominations exist, differing translations of the Bible, specific Scripture questions, prayer, and spiritual journeys. The Reverend continues, “For six months in 2016, I also did a weekly hour-long radio show on KERV. It was a call-in program, giving me the opportunity to speak with the listeners and answer their questions on the air.”

Expanding understanding

Additionally, Pastor Sullivan created thirty-plus videos to examine the Augsburg Confession—considered to be the Lutheran profession of faith.

The Pastor shares, “I had no idea it would become so big and open so many doors. In the past four years, we’ve posted 143 videos, have over 400 YouTube

“The video series examines the document and the supportive Scriptures. This year I’m doing another series on the same topic, focusing on a different document.”

Watch video answers at Youtube.com/user/ATPHolyCross

The Sullivan family grew to include the congregation and the Reverend and Erin’s own three children—Amos (6), Emma (4), and John (2). Last year in June, Pastor Sullivan led his extended Kerrville family in celebration of the seventieth anniversary of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Stay in touch and be informed— email Pastor Sullivan today to share your questions for Ask The Pastor at atpholycross@gmail.com. Check out past and current videos at youtube.com/user/ ATPHolyCross. Birds

need calcium too!

KERRVILLE  FREDERICKSBURG

by Kevin & Linda Pillow

Calcium. You need it, birds need it. We all know that calcium is important in maintaining a healthy skeletal structure. With nesting season upon us, the bird’s greatest need for this essential mineral is now. In order for females to produce viable eggs, they must markedly increase their calcium intake. Most of the dietary calcium an egg-laying female consumes will go directly into the production of eggs. If a female is calcium deficient, that can result in fewer eggs being laid or eggs with thinner than normal shells, which can result in the embryos drying up due to excess evaporation through the thin shell. Growing chicks require extra calcium also. If they do not get enough calcium as they grow, it could result in rickets, lameness or misshapen bones. You may wonder where in the world birds get calcium. Raptors will easily consume calcium from the blood and bones of their prey. Shorebirds consume shells of small calcium-rich mollusks. Certain species of sparrows and blackbirds eat plant matter that is high in calcium. Most birds, however, have to find extra sources outside their normal diet. They may eat carcasses or antlers, and even eggshells of other birds. Many birds actually consume calcium from mineral deposits in dirt. You can help the birds along, especially during nesting season, by providing calcium rich foods. When purchasing suet products, check to see if calcium has been added. You can also find loose bird seed that has calcium carbonate added. Given a choice between two foods that are identical in every respect except calcium level, chicks and egg-laying females will select the food with calcium. Serving calcium-rich foods at your feeder station could draw a larger variety of birds in the evenings, as they consume calcium rich food for overnight egg formation. Check with your local experts for advice on calcium included foods to give your birds a boost this spring.

The Dietert Center is joining other Meals On Wheels providers across the country in the 15th annual “March for Meals” campaign. We want to raise awareness that Meals On Wheels is ‘more than just a meal.’ This vital service addresses three of the biggest threats of aging: isolation, hunger, and the loss of independence. Helping seniors stay healthy and safe at home improves our entire community.

themselves. Most are homebound and depend on Dietert’s meals as the lifeline to maintaining their independence. Available by donation, more than 60,000 meals were delivered last year to frail, elderly shut-ins. We’ll celebrate our amazing volunteers with a week of breakfasts. We’ll also be inviting elected officials and other community leaders to ride-along and deliver meals.

Besides a weekday meal, our clients also receive a visit from a friendly, compassionate volunteer, and the joy of knowing that someone truly cares. Many times, that volunteer is the only person they’ll see that day. It would be impossible to operate this critical program without the help of nearly 200 dedicated volunteers!

Volunteers and monetary support are always needed to keep Meals On Wheels rolling. Donate at www.dietertcenter. org, or call Tony Ramos, Volunteer Coordinator, at 830-792-4044 to learn about volunteering. Thanks for feeding those in need!

How come

Texans are so dad-blamed proud of

Texas? by Jim McLaughlin

40 | MAR-APR 2017 | KERR COUNTY PEOPLE MAGAZINE

I

want to explain how deep-seated feelings of pride, loyalty, affection, and warmth for all things Texan just naturally evolve and perpetuate themselves here in our state. It’s simple. We indoctrinate the children. From an early age, we instill in them a love of Texas. We drink Shiner Bock or Lone Star Beer in their presence. We play “Waltz Across Texas” on the radios in our pickup trucks and feed them chicken-fried steaks, chili, and barbeque while they are still in high chairs. We buy cowboy boots for the kids before they can walk, and drag them to football games, rodeos, and team ropings. When they’re in grade school, we put Frito Pie in their lunches. (Chicken-fried steak was invented in Lamesa in 1911, and Fritos in San Antonio in 1932.) I took my daughter, Devon, in her stroller, to the grand ballroom of the Shamrock Hotel in Houston when she was almost a year old. I had a construction crew working in the building and I wanted her to see the Emerald Room Glenn McCarthy had built before we remodeled it. The character Jett Rink, from the Edna Ferber novel Giant, was based on Glenn McCarthy. James Dean played Jett Rink in the movie. When my son Paul was four, he watched as we unloaded a new tractor at our farm. Because this is Texas, we called a 200-acre farm near Crockett a ranch. Three of us partnered to buy the place, and we named it the Easy Three Ranch and branded our cattle with the EZ3. By the time Paul was six, he could drive the tractor, and at ten, he was mowing the pastures.

t a e r G

One day my partner, Hugh Ruggles, and I were mending “bob war” fences (barbed wire fences for non-Texans) at the Easy Three. Our new tractor was parked nearby, and Hugh casually asked, “How tall do you suppose that tractor is?” “I imagine it’s close to eight feet to the top of the hood,” I answered as I worked. “Do you think a five-year-old would get hurt if he fell eight feet?” Hugh’s son, Mac, a climber, had managed to get up the ladder to the driving platform, around the steering wheel, and out on top of the hood, past the exhaust stack. He was standing on top of the radiator, between the headlights, staring down at the ground. Mac is grown now, with a boy of his own, a six-year-old named Jett. Yes, named after that Jett. Is that cool, or what? A friend of mine, Carlos Vaquero, had his sons entertain his Yankee father-in-law. The boys, aged six and eight, did a rousing version of the Hank Jr. tune, “If Heaven Ain’t a Lot Like Texas, I Don’t Want to Go.” If you know the song, you will recall Hank Jr. sang “If Heaven Ain’t a Lot Like Dixie,” but these are Texas boys. Their pompous grandfather was less that amused. The third partner in the Easy Three, Ken Black, has a picture on his desk at the office. Two beautiful little girls, maybe four years old, are standing on the bank of a small lake, proudly holding two fish they caught. Ken’s daughter, Kacy, and Hugh’s girl, Taylor, are dressed in tennis shoes and panties, topless and just beaming. My daughter, Devon, was eight then, and would not have been caught dead without a top. All three girls spent a lot of time during their formative years at the farm, learning about life and about Texas. All have children now and are busy teaching them how to be proper Texans, no matter where they live. Both my children remember wonderful

years at the World’s Championship BarB-Que Cook-off at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. My son, Paul, was chief cook for a team when he was seventeen. If that seems young for a chief cook, understand that it was his thirteenth year at the competition.

loud and ostentatious in public places around the world and draw attention to themselves because they are so proud of being from Texas. Some of our older people are the same way. We’re doing the best we can with that, but some folks just can’t learn to be quiet and unassuming.

My friend, Jack Robbins, entered a chili cook-off and took along his boys. Luke, the four-year-old, helped by adding spices, tomato paste, and Salsa Goya while his older brother, Jack, stirred the chili with a proper paddle. The paddle was made of wood and unfinished, as it must be. Good Texas chili will dissolve varnish, remove the galvanizing from metal spoons, and evaporate plastic utensils. These foreign objects could impart an unwelcome aftertaste to the finished product. I prefer a white oak chili paddle for the additional strength, but the birch one Jack chose is perfectly acceptable.

Education has always been important in Texas. The second president of the Republic of Texas, Mirabeau Lamar, established the Texas school system by requiring that each county, as it was formed, set aside a league of land to be sold and the proceeds used for the building of a school. He allotted other land for the establishment of universities, and Texas University and Texas A&M both resulted from these endowments.

To help our children understand our heritage, Texas history is a required subject in our junior high schools. Texas is the only state to enter the union by treaty, and the only state to have been an independent nation. In 1880, Texans were fighting Comanche and just beginning to explore the trackless panhandle, while in New York City workers were building the Brooklyn Bridge. That same year, Boston celebrated its 250th anniversary. One of the main lessons we teach our children is, whatever you do, don’t brag. The facts about Texas are impressive enough without excess embellishment. For instance, El Paso is nearer San Diego than it is to Houston. “Houston” was the first word spoken by Neil Armstrong from the surface of the moon. He said, “Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.” These are true statements and, when used properly, do not sound like distasteful bragging. Some younger Texans are a bit

Texans have heroes other than soldiers and football players. Barbara Jordon was the first black woman from the south to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. She was born in the poverty-stricken Fourth Ward of Houston and served Texas with a long and distinguished career. Bill Clinton wanted to appoint her to the Supreme Court, but her health was too fragile when the time came. My children and my friends’ children grew up learning these things. Most other kids in Texas grow up in a similar fashion, learning about Texas at school and from their elders. When someone knows the real truth about Texas, it’s hard not to be proud. Our history fires the imagination, fills us with pride, and makes a good story.

That part about a good story is really important in Texas. Jim was born in Lubbock County, Texas in 1936 and now resides in Kerrville. As a proud fifth-generation Texan, Jim studies and writes about Texas history, with a bit of humor thrown in. Visit Jim’s blog: StateofLubbock.Blogspot.com

PRMC Volunteer Auxiliary

Emergency Department Volunteers

Emergency Department Volunteers face challenges different from those usually associated with hospital volunteering. They are often on their feet for most of the time when working their shift, so physical stamina is a “must.” Since they can be confronted with unusual and emotional situations requiring tact, empathy, and an ability to cope, they receive special training before being assigned to the ED. This is Vicki Yates, retired Presbyterian minister and retired Tivy High School teacher, who often works two morning shifts in the ED. As well as the personal benefit she receives from “giving back,” Vicki volunteers in the memory of her mom, Doris Voelkel, a longtime Peterson Auxilian.

Yodalis Joa is a newcomer to the ED and was a healthcare professional in her native Cuba. She loves taking care of people and is eager to learn about the healthcare system in the United States. Yodalis will be working a morning shift. Note that welcoming smile and she is bilingual!

Photos Courtesy E.J. Amason 42 | MAR-APR 2017 | KERR COUNTY PEOPLE MAGAZINE

Glenn Rowan is a fixture in the ED where he can be found pushing a gurney or a wheelchair, supplying warm blankets, running errands for the staff, stocking supplies, or chatting with an anxious family member. Glenn is a retired City of Houston employee. He calls the ED his “happy place,” and often works two or more shifts per week.

Meet Melinda Ivey. She has a fulltime job elsewhere but volunteers in the Emergency Department on weekends. Melinda especially enjoys the patient contact as well as other duties, and feels that when she gets a room ready for the next patient, she is helping the doctors and nurses do their jobs.

Judy Jones is the Volunteer Coordinator and Patient Representative for Peterson Health. She is a thirty-year employee and was awarded the Duan Packard Employee of the Year Award for 2012. If you think you have the “right stuff” to be an ED volunteer, or a volunteer elsewhere in the hospital, give Judy a call at 830-258-7630.

T

he Kerrville Main Street Advisory Board unveiled the Guadalupe Bass Public Art Project, “Lupe” on Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. near the Louise Hays Park Fountain Plaza, 202 Thompson Drive.

The Guadalupe Bass, the official

state fish of Texas, is native to the Guadalupe River. This sculpture titled “Lupe” by artist GiGi Miller, celebrates the unique fish that lives only in Texas Hill Country streams.

“The sculpture includes tiles that were hand-crafted by Kerrville citizens at a craft session held last summer,” says Ashlea Boyle, Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation. “It will be an exciting opportunity for everyone to find their artwork on the bass. Their contribution will now be a lasting part of Kerrville’s history.” This is the third installment of public art made possible by Kerrville Main Street. The “Welcome to Kerrville” sign located at IH-10 and the “Mother’s Love” sculpture on Earl Garrett Street were the first two projects sponsored by Kerrville Main Street.

46 | MAR-APR 2017 | KERR COUNTY PEOPLE MAGAZINE

For this project, artists were invited to submit proposals for a permanent sculpture that expresses a cultural, geographical, or historical significance to Kerrville. Guidelines specified that the sculpture encourage visitor interaction and leave a positive, lasting impression. The Guadalupe River serves as a natural backdrop to Lupe and creates the perfect setting for making memories and taking photographs. GiGi Miller is a mixed media artist, mother, and nature lover who has lived in Austin, Texas for nearly twenty years. GiGi seeks to bring happiness and beauty to the world by creating aesthetically pleasing art that is playful and feeds the imagination. She enjoys making ceramic tiles and sculpting whimsical concrete sculptures that have an uplifting effect on the audience. GiGi received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from The University of Texas at Austin in 2003.
