Bridging the gap between the artist and artisan is a hallmark of Michael Aram's work. Whether in his narrative and figurative "signature" collection, or in his more contemporary 'studio' line, each piece is entirely handmade with no two examples ever exactly the same. The handmade quality of the work allows it to shift beautifully between the realm of fine and decorative art.

T

he Hill Country is bustling with the arrival of spring and soon the hills will be covered with bluebonnets. This is a sure sign it’s time for birds to start nesting season. Most year-round residents start courting in late February, so start getting your yard ready for the plethora of babies coming your way.

We’ll supply the rest

There are cavity nesters and noncavity nesters. As far as our backyard birds go, nine species are cavity nesters: ash-throated flycatchers, titmice, chickadees, wrens, bluebirds, woodpeckers, purple martins, owls, and house sparrows. Martins have their own special housing colony; woodpeckers may use an owl box and the others will nest in bluebird boxes. Cardinals and goldfinches, along with others, will nest in bushes, trees, and on the ground. Putting out nest boxes is the easiest way to attract nesting birds. There are plenty of pretty houses which wrens will inhabit, but to attract the others you should be looking for certain criteria when purchasing a nest box. Good ventilation, no perch, and correct hole diameter are essential for successful broods. For the best success, choose a reputable and knowledgeable source for information to get you started. To further your success as a landlord you may want to put out nesting material for them to gather. There are a few rules regarding nesting material—the best bet is to purchase nesting balls but you can use dog hair, alpaca fur or yarn that’s three inches or shorter. It’s the dryer lint that is a problem. Dryer lint will disintegrate when it gets wet—not so good for holding eggs—and it’s also full of chemicals! Please do not offer lint for nesting material as it can actually harm the babies’ lungs.

Options.

That’s what you want and that’s what you look for when it comes to investing your hard-earned money. Whether it’s insurance for your home, apartment, autos, business, or health care, you want the best you can buy. The same certainly applies when it comes to financial planning for the 10 | MAR-APR 2018 | KERR COUNTY PEOPLE MAGAZINE

long term. Searching on your own for all these options can be downright overwhelming. Ray Bob Frizzell of Frizzell and Company has the solution. “We offer convenient one-stop shopping for your insurance needs and beyond, helping you find just the right option to serve those needs.”

Still Lives Here and Company

A Tradition of Integrity An evolution of innovation

Almost twenty years ago, Ray Bob and wife Betty Sue opened Frizzell and Company. “Back then I only wrote policies for Germania Insurance,” says Ray Bob. “Over its 122 years in business, Germania grew to be the largest farm mutual insurance company operating in Texas—and I’m proud to still offer Germania to my clients.” Ray Bob now also writes insurance policies for numerous well-known companies, carefully shopping them all to meet your individual needs and budget. Facilitating this process for almost a decade, Sharon Wood and Susan Cathey provide Frizzell clients the very finest in customer service. “In addition to all this, we have specialist James Williamson who helps ensure your peace of mind when it comes to insuring more than your possessions,” Ray Bob continues. “James provides a focus on financial and estate planning, annuities, life and long term care insurance, and Medicare supplemental insurance—he’s our expert in those fields and brings a spectacular wealth of knowledge to Frizzell and Company.”

FE

A trusted specialist

As a Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) and a Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC), James is a rare find locally. These impressive credentials mean he’s completed the five-year study and the ten exams for each of these certifications. “On top of these credentials I have forty years of experience to serve my client base,” adds James. “I have clients everywhere—I started my practice in Brownwood where I lived before moving it to Kerrville in 2005. Those first clients are still with me and all my clients know if they ever move, they can count on our continuing relationship.”

serving all your insurance needs and more!

Long-time client Loma Blake in Brownwood confirms, “James handles my annuities and my IRA—he’s very knowledgeable and has helped me plan financially for the past twenty years. James was my parents’ financial advisor too—he’s like family to me now. He knows my story and he cares.” Kerrville’s Sherman and Company real estate agent Judy Raborn-Kimmey shares, “James is my financial advisor and thanks to him I have an annuity that’s working very well for me. He’s easy to talk to and helps me understand the financial strategies he suggests for me. I don’t know what I would do without him. His personal service is the best and I frequently refer him to others. I love that James is so smart and a fine Christian man who’s involved in the community, too.” continue to next page KERR COUNTY PEOPLE MAGAZINE | MAR-APR 2018 | 11

continued from previous page

Also known as “the guy on the radio with Harley Belew,” James first went on the air over twenty years ago in Brownwood. Since moving to Kerrville, he regularly appears on radio station KERV. Currently his and Harley’s joint Round Table shows run throughout the week and primarily focus on state and national news.

“Frizzell’s yearly dinner party for Germania members fulfills that constitutional obligation to meet annually, plus it gives us the opportunity to give back to our customers,” explains Ray Bob. “Not many agents do it, but we choose to host a party and serve dinner for our Germania clients’ annual meeting. After all, getting together to eat is something Texans do best.

“Reading is my hobby—mostly magazines, newspapers, and newsletters—it keeps me up on current affairs. I learn a lot that I can share on the air and with my clients,” comments James.

“So this is much more than an annual business meeting for us. It’s really a party—James, Sharon, Susan, and I personally greet every single guest. We go around to all the tables shaking hands, patting backs, and hugging necks to say ‘thank you, we appreciate your business.’”

In fact client Glenn Martin, an audio engineer and singer and lead guitarist for the group Flashbacks, first met James at a live radio show appearance in Kerrville. Glenn says, “We developed a good, fun relationship that’s been both business and personal. James is so sharp and articulate—I have great respect for his intellect, for his ability to talk skillfully on so many topics, and for what he’s accomplished in life. He and his wife Jeannie are wonderful people.”

Another Frizzell tradition continues

For the past seventeen years, Ray Bob and his wife Betty Sue have hosted an appreciation dinner for their clients who are members of Germania Insurance—the farm mutual that has joined Texans together to help support each other’s needs since 1896. Because Germania is a farm mutual, its policy holders are members of the company—requiring an annual meeting for each Texas chapter to hold elections of directors and to discuss business concerns.

This year’s appreciation celebration will include plenty of mouthwatering barbeque with all the yummy fixings. And everyone will go home with a bagful of novelties—tokens of gratitude for the trust Germania members place with Frizzell and Company. Ray Bob concludes, “We want them to go home happy, with hands and bellies full. Our goal is to treat guests like they’re part of the family.” For a one-stop approach for your insurance and financial planning needs, contact Frizzell and Company today. 830-895-2213, 1130 Junction Hwy #300 (in the Security State Bank building), Kerrville, RayBob@FrizzellandCompany.com. And if you’re a Germania member, be sure to RSVP for your place at the party table! Anne Schneider is a Kerrville writer and author of Breath Found Along The Way, a book of poetry and face-cast mask art. She leads natural healing Reiki workshops and Tai Chi classes at her Ventana Al Cielo Studio. Visit her at ReikiTexas.info.

Holy Cross

T

hroughout history, people gathered into communities to share and support their beliefs. Traditionally found at the core of those communities, Churches served as a touchstone of teaching and a foundation for faith. In that same tradition, Holy Cross Lutheran Church flourishes in our community as a beacon to those in search of Scripture-based doctrine and worship. Now in its eighth decade, Holy Cross continues to offer its congregation the comfort of Scripture and the promise of forgiveness. Holy Cross Pastor Joshua Sullivan shares, “We are a place where people can come to learn true Christian faith, to hear the pure Gospel of Jesus Christ, and to learn about forgiveness. “We hear both the law, that we are sinners, and the Gospel, that we are forgiven for the sake and on account of Christ. Strengthened in our faith, we can go into our community to serve and love our neighbor.”

Rev. Joshua Sullivan 14 | MAR-APR 2018 | KERR COUNTY PEOPLE MAGAZINE

Lutheran Church serving the community through the decades Holding sacred space

Beginning in the mid-1940s as a handful of Christians meeting in homes, the Holy Cross congregation was officially organized in 1946. That same year, acquisition of property at its present location on Spence Street saw the installation of surplus army barracks to house the faithful for worship services and Scripture study. A Christian Day School soon followed with additional classrooms as needed. “In 1950, the present church building was dedicated to the service and glory of God,” says Pastor Sullivan. “The school buildings were remodeled in the 1980s and continued to accept students until 2010, when the school closed. It was a necessary but heavy heart moment— countless students from the congregation and community graduated from Holy Cross Lutheran School.”

A caring family carries on

“At Holy Cross we’re a family—a congregation that cares for one another, grows together in faith, and bears each other’s burdens,” continues Pastor Sullivan. “We enjoy monthly fellowship lunches, women’s fellowship, and Bible study groups.” A member of Holy Cross congregation for thirty years, Dave Powers agrees. “In 1987, my wife Dolores and I moved to Kerrville from the Chicago suburbs. At Holy Cross we found a new family and in time Dolores served on the school board. When she died four years ago, Pastor Sullivan and the congregation were there for me.” Both Dave’s adult children Lyndsey and Gary Powers now live in the area and are members of Holy Cross. Dave attends Bible classes twice a week and daughter Lyndsey joins him there on Wednesday mornings. “The whole congregation is grateful for Pastor Sullivan’s faith-based teachings,” says Dave. “He’s a learned man with an amazing knowledge of Scripture. I’m blessed to call Holy Cross my home parish.” Another long-time parishioner, Mary Ann Steelhammer loves her Holy Cross family as well. “I especially enjoy our women’s fellowship group, WIGS—Women In God’s Service. We get together once a month and have a good time, especially making gifts for those less fortunate—we want them to know people truly do care about them.” For over a decade, Mary Ann has sewn twentyfive to fifty backpacks each year for Lutheran World Relief’s school kits. WIGS members delight in filling the colorful homemade back packs with donated school supplies and a good measure of love. These “Kits of Care” are distributed around the world to children who have lost everything to natural disasters or the violence of wars. continue to next page

Offering comfort for homeless people here in our community, WIGS collects plastic shopping bags and Mary Ann recycles them into “crocheted” mats. These 3x6 foot and larger mats are then distributed to the homeless. In another project benefiting our community, WIGS made terrycloth bibs for adult hospice care. With a focus on the Holy Cross congregation, Pastor Sullivan does monthly shut in visits with Lord’s Supper. In cases of emergency he’s there at the side of patient and family for spiritual support throughout the crisis.

Pastoral vocation

In 2008, Reverend Sullivan answered the Holy Cross congregation’s call for a Pastor. Moving from St. Louis, he and his wife Erin made Kerrville their home. The Sullivan family grew to include their three children as well as the Holy Cross congregation.

The first Holy Cross class, 1947-48. Teacher Miss Dorothy Jane Stratsman.

“As Pastor, I could not have asked for a more loving group of people. Our Holy Cross family has seen us through some challenging personal times.” Teaching is an important part of his pastoral role and Pastor Sullivan leads members of the congregation in twice-a-week Bible study classes. He describes them as an informal, in-depth study with a practical take away. “As we study Scripture we ask ‘what does this mean?’ rather than ‘what does this mean to me?’” says Pastor Sullivan. “The crux of our belief is that Christ was crucified for the forgiveness of our sins.”

Pastor Sullivan’s ministry includes his Ask The Pastor videos on the Church’s Facebook page. Content for Ask The Pastor videos is user generated and question driven. Over 900 YouTube subscribers enjoy the videos and they’ve received over 114,000 views. “Through Ask The Pastor I receive questions and comments from all over the world—it’s a global connection for a small town in Central Texas. And because of this technology we’re able to expand the impact of our beliefs in a unique way beyond the walls of the church.” Additionally Pastor Sullivan’s sermons can be found on the Holy Cross website, giving those unable to attend Sunday services a chance to read the Pastor’s preaching. At the Divine Service on Sunday mornings, Holy Cross encourages children to worship with their parents. Prior to going to the service, children can attend Sunday school to creatively learn about the Gospel text for that day and to prepare for the message they will hear while worshiping with their family. Pastor Sullivan concludes, “Holy Cross welcomes the public to come by for a Sunday Service to meet our family and hear the Word of God.” Holy Cross Lutheran Church invites you to visit and discover more about this Evangelical Lutheran Diocese of North America (ELDONA)-affiliated Church. 204 Spence Street. The first years last forever

D

by Lainie Johnson

id you know that your baby starts listening to your voice while still in the womb? Studies have shown that a newborn baby will turn his head toward the sound of his father’s voice! You begin bonding and interacting with your baby before he has even left the safe environment of his mother’s body. By the time your child is three-years-old, ninety percent of his brain has developed. Every parent wants their child to be the smartest, most well-developed child that he has the ability to be—to be popular, friendly, and loved by all. But, did you know that you play a big part in how this all happens? The brain grows through experiences, challenges, and stimulation from the world around him. During infancy, this only happens from people around him—i.e. parents— interacting with him. Talking to him, playing with him, and touching him are ways that will cause the two of you to bond. Touch affects the deepest levels of brain and body chemistry to create this bonding. When babies bond with their caregivers, they grow up to be quick learners, have a better image of themselves and they make friends more easily. 22 | MAR-APR 2018 | KERR COUNTY PEOPLE MAGAZINE

Babies that are denied interaction through touching and talking are often diagnosed later in life with learning disabilities and/or behavior disorders only because they were not loved enough as an infant. Prior to six months old, your baby is not capable of being spoiled or manipulating you. You cannot hold him too much. The more you hold, talk, sing, read, and dance with your baby, the better his whole life will be. Make the most of these early years because they do last forever. The time you invest in your baby now will pay off in his lifetime. A healthy baby is born with 100 billion neurons. Between the ages of three and five, forty percent of those neurons will be lost if they aren’t being used. Do everything possible to interact with your baby in various ways to develop as much of their brain as possible. Lainie Johnson is the Executive Director of The Pregnancy Resource Center. To learn more, visit ThePregnancyResourceCenter.org or call 830-257-2166. The Center offers free parenting classes on a personalized basis to address whatever concerns you may have about your child from conception to age twelve.

Our boat insurance policy provides for replacement cost coverage on repairs to get the boat back to its original condition. Total loss claims are settled on an agreed value basis, meaning you will be reimbursed based on your policy coverage limits.

Boat liability insurance offers coverage if your boat causes injury to others or damage to other boats, docks, or structures. Injury or damage can be due to direct contact with your vessel or situations caused by your vessel, like large wakes. Good boat liability coverage may provide protection against lawsuits, including the payment of settlements and legal fees.

How Much Is Boat Insurance?

The best way to lower your boat insurance premiums is to become a safer boater. For example, you could earn a discount by completing an approved boating safety course. Talk to a State Farm agent to find the discounts available to you. Amber Thomason and her staff have over 15 years of insurance and financial service experience and would love the opportunity to earn your business. Come home to a local agent that is dedicated to the life and needs of her customers. 221 Thompson Dr., Kerrville. 830-315-5433.

You Can’t Eat Your China B

ut your china can help feed hungry friends and neighbors who depend on Meals on Wheels for ready-to-eat food. Some 280 local folks look to Meals on Wheels to provide hot meals to their homes five days a week. These deliveries can make the difference between staying at home or moving to an institution as well as sustaining health or declining due to poor nutrition. The meal deliveries are by generous volunteers, but the food costs exceed government support by more than $186,000 per year. And the local program, operated by the nonprofit Dietert Center, must make up the difference through donations and fundraising.

Here’s where your china comes in: The creative people at Victorious Walk Ministries (VWM)—another local nonprofit, which also operates the Finds resale stores in Kerrville— help raise money for Meals on Wheels with their Tables for Good project. This tablescaping show and sale is looking for quality china that may be lurking in your attics, basements, closets, and storage units, that could be donated for a great cause. VWM will take any china, and those that will show the best for gorgeous, over-the-top-table settings, will be featured in a Tables for Good event.

The next Tables for Good Show & Sale will be the largest, most spectacular ever; it’s coming this October 19-20. The VWM volunteers have stepped it up because of this year’s financial shortfall in Dietert’s nutrition program.

So dust off those boxes and crates. If your kids don’t want it, let your china go to a new home and for hot meals to the growing number of area residents who benefit from meal deliveries. You may take your dishes to Finds at 516 Quinlan Street in Kerrville or call 830-315-3463 for more information or pick up. KERR COUNTY PEOPLE MAGAZINE | MAR-APR 2018 | 29

What is Cupping Therapy? by Lea Heflin MA, LMT

C

upping

is one of the oldest and most globally practiced medical treatments in human history. It was popularized in Egypt, dating back 3500 years, where its use is seen repeatedly throughout hieroglyphic records. The use of Cupping Therapy declined beginning in the late 1800s, but has recently seen a resurgence, as the general public becomes more educated regarding their options for effective health care.

techniques. It brings fresh, revitalized blood to stagnant areas and loosens areas of adhesion or restriction. The pulling action of the negative pressure engages the parasympathetic nervous system, thus allowing a deep relaxation to move through the entire body. It is not unusual to fall asleep when receiving this treatment, and clients often remark how relaxed, warm, and light they feel. This feeling lasts from a few hours up to several days!

Cupping Therapy is very beneficial for a variety of conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, sciatica, insomnia, colon disorders, anxiety, fatigue, poor circulation, edema, sports injuries, cellulite, nervous tension, chronic headache, fibromyalgia, and so many more. For instance, numerous swimmers in the last Summer Olympics (including Michael Phelps) were seen with cup marks on their bodies, indicating that this ancient treatment has been used on the most elite athletes in the world.

In the current western medical system, many health issues are treated with medication and at times, even surgery. In some circumstances this is the most appropriate path, however many people are eager to seek out alternatives. Research Cupping Therapy for yourself, to see if this treatment option is something that might help you.

This remarkable therapy employs negative pressure, rather than tissue compression, for superior results in the wide array of bodywork

Ready to give your home a spring refresh? Now’s the perfect time, before summer activities are underway and there’s no time or inclination. Kerrville Window Fashions now offers custom monogramming for towels, pillows, throws, golf towels, aprons, tote bags, and more. I have been sewing since the age of five, and truly love the process. Several years ago I acquired a computerized embroidery machine, and I was hooked. First one, then another, and this year we purchased a commercial machine capable of much more than I could ever do on my home machines. Adding a personalized monogram to your drapery, pillows, and perhaps a custom accessory, is a great way to set your custom project apart. The name of our sister company, Art in Thread, says it all. We love to use beautiful, vibrant colors to add finishing touches to the custom products that we offer. Stop by today, or check out the website at ArtInThread-Tx.com, and experience what personalization adds to a project. The Annual Hunter Douglas Energy Smart Style savings event is going on now through April 9, with rebates and savings on the most energy-efficient products to get you ready for the hot summer. RAZOR or SHEARS?

W

hat’s the difference between a pair of shears and a razor? One blade. Shears cut with two, a razor with one. Each has benefits, and often a hairdresser uses both doing one haircut. Each tool has its purpose—from short shears, to long shears, to razors, to texturizing/thinning shears … the list is endless. Properly selected tools used correctly creates magic. Layers become weightless, curls spring back to life, hair becomes moveable, touchable, and easy to style. The razor is one of the most misunderstood hairdressing tools. Razor education for hairdressers is often hard to find, and like any tool, when misused due to lack of education, experience, or what have you,

H

a haircut is ruined and who is to blame? I sometimes hear from clients: “I had a razor cut and it ruined my hair,” and I even hear hairdressers tell their clients: “A razor cut will ruin your hair.” Well allow me to tell you a little secret: A razor cannot ruin a haircut—but a hairdresser can. What’s the secret to getting a great razor cut and avoiding all the not-so-great ones? Ask your hairdresser about their razor experience, continuing education, and how they feel about using it on you. If they seem knowledgeable and excited to use a razor, chances are, they’re pretty comfortable using it. Just remember to watch out for dull razors (sharp razors will effortlessly glide through the hair and should never pull or cause pain). If your

hairdresser is hesitant to use a razor, don’t push it. The last thing you need is somebody fumbling around with an unfamiliar tool on your precious strands. You’re just asking for trouble. Always allow your hairdresser to cut your hair using techniques they’re most comfortable with, as long as your desired results are achieved (tell them the “what,” not the “how”). And if you insist on getting a razor cut, find a hairdresser who is experienced and educated in razor cutting. Katie has been in the beauty industry for twenty-five years. T

by Trena Cullins

he glorious time of outdoor renewal begins. March is the month to plant those summer-flowering bulbs. Don’t let your enthusiasm cause you to overbuy for your area. Pay close attention to spacing and the time of flowering. Most bulb gardens don’t need much attention and bloom year after year. After planting at the proper depth in at least four inches of organic matter, apply a long-lasting, slow-release fertilizer. Water your bulbs thoroughly and apply about an inch of mulch. Continue to mulch the bulbs as they grow to prohibit weeds.

The

It’s also time for getting the vegetable garden ready for planting. Rotate your vegetable-planting areas. It’s more important for nutrient enhancement and balance (all plants don’t use the same nutrients), disease prevention, and insect control. Adding organic materials and other soil amendments before you plant insures a bountiful harvest. Let the planting games begin and may the harvest be forever in your favor!

If your bulbs didn’t bloom as well as usual last year, it’s probably time to dig them up and divide them. This gives you more bulbs to plant or share. Continue watering regularly but don’t over water

Plants, Rain Barrels by Dee Dunton

I

ill Country Master Gardeners H

t’s an exciting time of year for Hill Country Master Gardeners as they nurture new plants growing into lush garden-ready specimens for their annual Blooms and Barrels sale on April 14. Native and adapted ornamentals, along with vegetables, herbs, and trees are potted and placed in the greenhouse where they’re watered, fertilized, and groomed to become welcome additions to Central Texas lawns and gardens.

Although plants are the star of the day, there are other attractions to bring you to Blooms and Barrels. Hill Country Master Gardeners, which is a chapter of Texas Master Gardeners, will be on hand to answer gardening questions and every plant will have an information sheet available for buyers to take home. Several educational programs, including growing tomatoes, plant propagation, rainwater harvesting, and composting, will be offered throughout the morning. In addition, a wide variety of local vendors, organizations and service providers have been invited to exhibit at the sale. As those familiar with the Central Texas climate well know, irrigation is often a necessity, and rain barrels are a good way to harvest water that is excellent for gardens and potted plants. HCMG constructs rain barrels for sale to the public with the bonus of a rebate from the Upper Guadalupe River Authority, who will be staffing a booth at the event. Profits from rain barrel sales help fund scholarships for Texas horticulture students.

t is estimated that 45% of the population—about 133 million Americans—have at least one chronic disease. Just the diagnosis can be intimidating and then there are decisions to navigate on how best to manage the disease. Reiki, a natural and non-manipulative therapy can be very effective—especially with pain relief. As an integrative or complementary therapy, Reiki can help medications work more effectively and with fewer side effects. This healing therapy can be used right along with whatever your team of physicians advises for you. Equally as important, Reiki helps with the emotional stress of dealing with a chronic and sometimes degenerative disease. Receiving Reiki sessions on a regular basis can significantly help you live more comfortably with your condition. Additionally, Reiki is easy to learn so that you can practice it daily on yourself to support you through difficult times.

PRMC Volunteer Auxiliary by Judy Jones

WHY we volunteer . . . Gary and Sharon La Tour

S

haron Wells, once a PRMC lay chaplain, now spends two afternoons a week volunteering in the PRMC Gift Shop. Sharon says, “This is the best kept retail secret in town and a wonderful place to volunteer.” Sharon was delighted with having served so many Christmas shoppers last year and feels that the Gift Shop merchandise and management is superb. Recently retired from a family business, Joan Cone wanted to volunteer with a focused and well-managed organization where she could make a contribution and keep on learning. She finds inspiration in the Hospital Auxiliary where she works in the Gift Shop and is being crosstrained for the Information Desk. She also enjoys the Auxiliary meetings where she hears informative speakers. In addition, she and her husband are members of Mastersingers of San Antonio. Husband and wife team Gary and Sharon La Tour have several years’ experience as PRMC volunteers and currently spend their Friday afternoons assisting visitors at the Information Desk. In their own words, “We’re a part of the front desk information group allowing us to interact with patients and hospital staff. We feel this is our way to give back to the community and in turn this provides us a high level of personal satisfaction.”

Would you like to know more about your options for volunteering? Give Judy Jones a call at 830-258-7630. A thirty-plus-year employee at PRMC, Judy is the Volunteer Coordinator and Patient Advocate.
