hen you walk in the door you know you’re in for a new experience. Behind the glass wall you can see the pharmacy tech dressed in white, compounding prescriptions for people like you—people who want their medications tailored specifically for them. Supplements from topbrand companies line the shelves around you, along with a variety of other health care products you can choose from. The Apothecary Shoppe co-owner and Registered Pharmacist Sabrina Griggs says, “Our goal is to be one part of a three-tiered approach to your good health. In cooperation and communication with you and your health care practitioner, we strive to add life to your years and maybe even years to your life.”
Taking a closer look
The third pharmacy Sabrina and husband Calvin Luck have owned, The Apothecary Shoppe is their first venture into compounding. “This aspect of pharmacy has opened up a profusion of new avenues to improve our patients’ quality of life,” explains Calvin. “Compounding allows a prescription to be modified to formulate a truly customized therapy to precisely treat a patient’s symptoms.” Nutritional support is another important segment of Sabina and Calvin’s practice. They know proper nutrition is a vital part of overall wellness and that many health issues are diet related. “Unfortunately, commercial food production revolves around financial profit to the detriment of nutritional value,” Sabrina adds. “We offer a broad range of supplements, from pharmaceutical grade premier lines to trusted holistic and naturopathic brands. “Experience has taught us it’s much easier to help a patient stay healthy than to regain lost health. In pursuit of that goal, we continually expand our supplement department to fulfill the needs of our clientele.” As part of Sabrina and Calvin’s continuing commitment to sharing knowledge with their patients, they host a radio program on Hill Country Patriot two or three Tuesdays per month at 10 a.m. On each program Sabrina interviews a guest from a different facet of healthcare. These guests range from traditional medical providers to alternative and holistic practitioners and supplement manufacturers’ representatives. “These medical professionals bring a broad spectrum of knowledge to assist our listeners in their quest for better health,” says Calvin. In a similar vein, Sabrina and Calvin host “practitioner pop-ups” at The Apothecary Shoppe in a space adjacent to The Shoppe. They invite alternative and holistic practitioners to set up for a day to introduce patients to other forms of treatment, believing that quite often the best result is achieved through a multi-pronged approach. Beyond the Apothecary Shoppe, Calvin and Sabrina are also actively involved in our community. They regularly devote time, money, and effort to church, social, and community groups that benefit the Continue to next page overall quality of life in Kerrville. Memorial Weekend e l l i v r r e K g n i Keep t f a r C d n a t r A e n i F a n o i t a D e st i n Kerrville sets
the scene Memorial Weekend with a feast of fine art and craft to please every palate. Citywide events provide ample bounty for all—from casual art aficionados to serious collectors. Let’s take a look at some of these excellent venues.
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
Arts Extravaganza 16th Annual Texas Masters of Fine Art and Craft Invitational Show Our first sojourn is this prestigious exhibition to be featured in the ballrooms of the celebrated Y.O. Ranch Resort Hotel in Kerrville. The ballrooms will be transformed into a breathtaking gallery from Friday, May 24 to Sunday, May 26, as some of Texas’s finest, award-winning professional artists display their creations. Each of the artists invited to exhibit is a recognized master of his or her chosen media which includes oil paintings, ceramics, watercolors, pastels, metalsmithing, jewelry, woodworking, and sculpture. Exhibition organizer Dan Baker, who with his wife Linda first displayed their handcrafted gold and silver jewelry at the Texas Arts & Crafts Fair in 1977, is expecting another successful “Texas Masters” show at the Y.O. Ranch Hotel & Conference Center. Dan notes, “In thirty-six years of showing in Kerrville we’ve developed a good clientele and wonderful friendships—in some cases even extending into the third generation of buyers from the same family. The Y.O. is a great place for collectors to hang out with their favorite artists, so we all try to have new pieces to unveil at the show.” Dan invites you to come see why the “Texas Masters” has the reputation as a high-quality show and sale in a beautiful indoor venue, produced and managed by the artists themselves.
Kerrville Festival of the Arts Let’s linger now to relish the arts in Kerrville’s historic downtown area. Organizers LuAnn Anderson and Jackie Kayne are celebrating the sixth year of this annual show. Continuing the long-standing tradition of fine art events in Kerrville during Memorial Weekend, this juried show and sale is a two-day outdoor festival and a pet-friendly venue. The event features several large tents and an assortment of smaller ones at the corner of Earl Garrett and Water Streets. Festival goers will be served a full plate of fine art delights— by more than 100 artists—painting, photography, sculpture, wood, ceramics, fiber, leather, glass, metal, graphics, mixed media, and jewelry.
A few food and beverage booths augment the ever-growing downtown restaurants and local shops are encouraged to expand their offerings to outdoor sidewalks. There is also live music and artist demonstrations.
And that’s not all Downtown Kerrville is blessed with three permanent galleries, all filled with forever-changing fine art. River’s Edge Gallery has something for everyone at their Water Street location. Do you like modern? Mike and Debbie have it. Traditional? They have it. Bluebonnets? Yep. Western? Sure thing. You’ll might even find a little avant garde. On the corner of Earl Garrett and Main, in the lovely “old post office,” as locals like to call it, is Kerr Arts and Cultural Center (KACC). Ever changing exhibits never disappoint. One of the many annual shows at KACC is the 14th Annual Southwest Gourd Fine Art Show, featuring some of the Southwest’s finest gourd artists. The awards reception takes place on Saturday, May 25 from 2 to 4 p.m. Directly across the street from KACC is Slate Gray Gallery exhibiting fine art, artisan jewelry, and lifestyle accessories. Drive a few miles west to Ingram to arrive at Hill Country Arts Foundation, on the banks of the beautiful Guadalupe. Art gallery, indoor and outdoor theater, and Stonehenge II. The short drive is well worth it. Whatever your taste, you’re sure to find it on Memorial Weekend. These fine art and craft events are free to the public, with shuttles among the Kerrville destinations available at no cost. So come on out and join us Memorial Weekend to savor the fine art and craft offerings right here at our own Kerrville table. For details on art and artists, as well as dates, times, and places for these events, see the following websites and be sure to look for the Texas Masters of Fine Art and Craft Show, Kerrville Festival of Arts, Kerr Arts & Cultural Center, and Hill Country Arts Foundation ads in this KCP issue. It’s suet time!
The Point Indoor Theatre June 14 -29 by Kevin & Linda Pillow
I
t’s the height of nesting season in the Hill Country—the season is between February
and August. This is a time that birds are very busy in our yards. They’re building nests, laying eggs, then tending to their young until they leave the nest. Imagine you’re a bewicks wren who has five babies screaming for food for at least two weeks straight. You have to go out to find a bug for each baby, regurgitate it, and feed each one. All. Day. Long! You might want to find a fast food restaurant to make things easier. That’s where suet comes in. Suet is basically baby food made of rendered beef kidney fat, nuts, oats, and loaded with protein and fat. It’s a soft food that’s easy for birds to fill their bills with and take back to the hungry kids—much easier for bird parents. One of the easiest and least expensive foods you can serve, it comes in cakes, cylinders, and nuggets which can be placed in specialized feeders. Some suet is infused with capsaicin oil to deter squirrels and raccoons—birds don’t feel the heat. Supersuet has more nuts, meal worms, and calcium added, making it a superior food for nesting season. You should be looking for suet that has a high protein content with no dyes, chemicals or scents added—none of which is good for the birds. Calcium added is a big plus. Watching bird parents come and grab all that good food for their young is always fun. But, often it is hilarious when they bring their young to the feeder for the first time, showing them the good stuff. The fledglings, not quite understanding what to do are comical! So, put out the suet and enjoy the show.
Happy Birding! Kevin & Linda Pillow are the proud owners of Wilds Birds Unlimited Nature Shop located at 855 Junction Hwy in Kerrville. Each staff member is a Certified Bird Feeding Specialist and can help you discover a refuge in your own backyard. 830-895-7393. 22 | MAY-JUNE 2019 | KERR COUNTY PEOPLE MAGAZINE

CBD Oil: Fact over Fiction By Sabrina Griggs, RPH
C
annabinoids, commonly called CBD oil have become an increasingly popular topic in modern healthcare. Although CBD is derived from agricultural hemp, a close relative to marijuana, it contains no THC, which is the psychotropic component of marijuana.
Cannabinoids have been found to be beneficial for sleep, focus, anxiety-related disorders, pain, and inflammation. Patients are also seeing improvement in Crohn’s disease, Type 1 diabetes, and various skin conditions. Additionally, parents are finding cannabinoids useful in treating children with autism, ADD, and ADHD. Smoking cessation, drug withdrawal, and eating disorders are also augmented by their use. Studies are underway for treatment of cancer and Alzheimer’s. Our bodies have an endocannabinoid system that actually produces cannabinoids. But, as a result of aging, illness, or injury, our ability to produce these important compounds becomes impaired. Supplemental cannabinoids are absorbed by the body’s receptors only where a deficit exists, making it a true targeted therapy. Dosing is highly individualized, based on the physiology of the patient and severity of symptoms.
24 | MAY-JUNE 2019 | KERR COUNTY PEOPLE MAGAZINE
CBD may be consumed by various methods: vaping, sublingual drops or sprays, gel caps, topical creams, and ointments. Each form is appropriate for various conditions. Pet-specific CBD therapies are also available in several strengths of oral drops and flavored treats. Consumers should beware of products labeled “hemp oil,” as these may contain little or no cannabinoids. At Apothecary Shoppe, we carry a variety of cannabinoid products from several top-quality manufacturers. All are source-verified from seed to shelf and certificates of analysis are available for every product. In addition, we offer educated advice on the proper use from a trusted medical professional and educated staff. Come by and consult with one of our staff about which cannabinoid products would be a good fit for you and your symptoms.

IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII GARD EN I N G
It’s S Planting Time by Trena Cullins
omewhere I read that over 26% of people between the ages of 20 and 30 will be planting their first home garden this year. That’s a lot of new gardeners. So with that in mind, how much does one plant per person? Well, that depends on a number of things.
Weather, fertilizer, and water determine your yield—our friendly little neighborhood deer also get their say in the matter, unless you have a high fence. Then there’s your appetite for vegetable varieties. (My asparagus bed now has over thirty crowns and not a single spear ever makes it to the kitchen before consumption.) So you’ll naturally want to plant more of some varieties than others. Most new gardeners would have no idea how to proceed, so I suggest visiting HarvestToTable.com; it has an awesome vegetable crop yield,

and plants per person chart. Remember too, that even though it’s tempting to overplant for sharing with friends and neighbors, it’s not always a great idea. If you have a bumper zucchini crop, you may have to revert to an old scheme to rid yourself of it. Simply don a big hat and sunglasses, drive around the HEB parking lot until you find an open vehicle to dump your zucchini into. You are Pregnant by Dawn Foster-Wood
“You are pregnant.” These three words will
change your life forever. From the day of conception, you’re responsible for growing a baby. Your body transforms, hormones rise, and your emotions are all over the place. It’s a scary time; it’s an exciting time. Whether the pregnancy is planned or unplanned, you are given the gift of life.
As an expectant mother, you have a lot of choices to make within a short nine-month period. You must adjust to your changing body and begin to learn what to expect when the baby comes. The Earn While You Learn program offered at the Parenting Resource Center can help educate you throughout the pregnancy, helping you bond with your unborn child and make changes to your lifestyle, if necessary. The bond between you and your child is lifelong—beginning the first day you realize you’re pregnant. Talking, singing, and reading to your baby helps him become familiar with your voice. You begin to learn his sleeping habits and temperament. It is a special time. Choosing to be the best mommy doesn’t start after birth; it begins while your bundle of joy is in your womb.
Did you know . . . You may submit articles to us?
Yes, if you write and have a human interest story, please let us know. (Not about your business—that’s another subject—advertising.) There are so many interesting stories out there and we love hearing from our Kerr County friends.
Ask KCP to write a story?
Yes, if you or someone you know has a human interest story that our readers might like, please ask us. We will when we can.
From the first trimester to the third trimester it’s essential to take care of your body. Learning what medications and foods to avoid is necessary for growing a healthy baby. Along with understanding healthy weight gain, being prepared for the emotional mood swings you most likely will face during pregnancy will help you recognize the more serious issues like depression. Your changing body can also experience skin changes, morning sickness, and other discomforts. One common discomfort is heartburn. If you experience heartburn try eating five to six small meals a day versus two or three large ones. If this doesn’t work, don’t eat foods that cause gas. The path may seem hard, but the destination is worth it. Congrats! You are pregnant. Start learning today to make impactful decisions for your baby. Dawn is the Parenting Resource Center’s Client Services Director. The Center offers free parenting classes, on an individual and confidential basis, to address whatever concerns you may have about your child— from conception to age twelve. To learn more visit TheParentingResourceCenter. org, stop by their office at 718 Alpine Drive in Kerrville, or call 830-257-2166.

In addition, Bendon Publishing has donated 1,000 Sesame Street board books and the HEB Read 3 Early Literacy Program is underwriting the cost of shipping the books to Kerrville. Because it’s never too soon to foster a love of reading and literacy in children, the Friends started the Books for Babies program in 2006. Each year, every newborn in Kerrville receives a canvas bag with books in English, Spanish, or both, along with information for parents about reading to babies. In 2018, 450 newborns and their families received these books. Studies have shown that children who have been read to as babies are better prepared to read on their own. Additionally, kids who were read to as infants develop larger vocabularies and better mathematical skills standlater on, as well as scoring higher on stand ardized tests.

James Avery has generously contributed $2500 to help fund the Friends of the Library Books for Babies program, which provides a canvas bag filled with books to each child born at Peterson Regional Medical Center.

Thank you so much to James Avery, HEB, and Bendon Publishing for your help in promoting literacy in our community! The Books for Babies program is just one of many projects funded by The Friends of the Library. Other projects include summer reading and educational programs, purchasing large print and audio books, and hosting readings and panel discussions by local writers. The Friends’ secondhand bookstore is located in the basement of the library and is open from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays. It is also open on the second Saturday of the month, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Donated books from mysteries to the classics and everything in between are available at a very reasonable price for purchase. Proceeds from the sale of these books support the library’s programs.

PRMC Volunteer Auxiliary by Judy Jones
A tale of two Howards PRMC is fortunate to have two recent volunteers, both named “Howard,”contributing many hours and their vocational skill sets to the Auxiliary’s mission. Howard Godwin, a 13-year resident of Kerrville and a retiree after 45-years as a systems analyst and computer programmer, decided to volunteer because he did not like “just sitting around home.” He has found his mark in several departments of the hospital such as Information Technology and the office of Education Coordinator, working to customize spreadsheets and scanning various computerized projects. As well, this busy gentleman works two days each week in the Pharmacy Department, unpacking and checking orders, and re-packaging drugs. The Volunteer Coordinator states “We have a hard time finding challenging opportunities for Howard.” And, giving of themselves runs in this family, as Howard’s wife Bonnie volunteers at the Raphael Clinic.
Howard Evans
Howard Evans’ 30-years’ experience with Texas Instruments, plus other career opportunities in Information Technology which took him worldwide (Mainland China, Japan, Australia) enable him to share this expertise with the Hospital Auxiliary. He works with the computer software program, updating and improving volunteer applications, and the Information Services Department to get on the Peterson Health website, as well as getting the Auxiliary listed on Volunteer Match. A 4-year Kerrville resident, Howard volunteered after reading of the need for volunteers in Kerr County People magazine, plus he wanted to learn more about the medical field because one of his daughters is a doctor.
