Artist Caryl Gaubatz with KACC’s Grace Roach.
For 20 years Caryl Gaubatz had quite a different stylist: Uncle Sam favored Midnight Blue and Woodland Camo to Pantone Colors of the year. In the 20 years since retiring from the Military she has been able to follow her bliss and focus on the craft of surface design and fiber art. Caryl designs narrative garments: wearable art that tells a story. The viewer may not readily perceive the story but will feel the authenticity and interact on some level much more strongly than if the garment were purely decorative. When the garment is worn, the wearer becomes an accomplice in telling the story.

Caryl says, “Environmental and spiritual issues find their expression in my work. My intention is to produce exquisitely crafted soft sculpture that includes the body as its animating element.”

ost backyard bird feeders hold sunflower, safflower, chips, and millet which makes the birds and the bird-watcher very happy. Add peanuts to the mix and bingo—you’ll attract a greater variety of birds. Protein-packed peanuts are a great addition to your backyard offerings, delighting woodpeckers, titmice, jays, chickadees, Cardinals, and nuthatches. They go over very well throughout the year, however, during nesting season they really go! During nesting season birds are on the hunt for protein-packed food to bring to their young. Peanuts do the trick. Many peanut-loving birds will cache seeds and nuts to retrieve later. They’ll even cover their haul with leaves or dead flower heads so that they know where they left them. Jays, in particular, have a razor-sharp memory for locating their cache. These cached seeds and nuts will help them get through winter when natural food sources are scarce.

A simple hanging tray feeder will accommodate peanuts in the shell. Hanging the tray feeder on a baffled pole system will keep the squirrels at bay. There are also specialized mesh feeders for both peanuts in or out of the shell. Serving peanuts out of the shell—roasted peanuts— works best in a vertical squirrel-proof feeder. Vertical landing spots are very important to clinging birds like woodpeckers. Setting up a baffled peanut/suet station will attract a plethora of birds particularly in the colder months. Watching the antics of the peanut-eating birds is always entertaining. Jays and titmice will yank the shells out of the feeder and may even stop to weigh their choices to make sure they get the heaviest peanut because it yields the most food. Smart! Most likely they’ll fly to a nearby perch, place the nut between their feet and peck away until they reach the inside. Whatever birds stop by to try these tasty nuts, they’re sure to entertain you year-round.

Medicare Advantage Plan
Open enrollment for Medicare Advantage plans began October 15, 2016. During the enrollment period, a Medicare participant can elect to change coverage from Traditional Medicare to a Medicare Advantage Plan OR from a Medicare Advantage Plan back to Traditional Medicare coverage. You should not change your Medicare coverage unless you have spoken to your physician, the hospital you normally use, your DME company, your pharmacist, or your home health agency. Often the Medicare Advantage Plans are not accepted by physicians, hospitals, outpatient labs/x-rays, or home health agencies. Under Medicare Advantage you may have co-pays or deductibles if your healthcare provider is not a participating provider in the Medicare Advantage Plan. So be careful. Consult your healthcare providers first!!!!!

ith the holiday festivities upon us, remember to take the time to get caught up with a few thing outdoors. Spring is just right around the corner, and there is much to be done in order to avoid issues you may have experienced this past spring and summer.
Winter Chores
Fungal problems on trees can be helped with some good sanitation. Rake up all infected leaves and dispose of them in the trash. Fungal properties can remain on leaves until conditions are once again favorable for the spores to redevelop. These spores can be spread by rain and wind. Applying a horticulture oil spray on your trees will help interfere with the pathogen to the host. It’s also a great time to spray existing fruit trees to suffocate fungus and wintering insects.

Fungal problems in lawns can be addressed now as well. St. Augustine lawns have suffered quite a bit with brown spot this past growing season due to all of the blessed rains we received. Rake up all of the dead grass areas and discard. Apply a thin layer of peat moss to the affected site. After a couple of weeks, apply another layer. Peat moss has a natural acidity and will help break down any fungal spores in the area. Before the spring warm-up, apply a small amount of

compost to the peat area. This should help your lawn recover quickly during the growing season. Any hard pruning should be done in the coldest months when trees and perennials are at the most dormant point. That’s a good way to burn off those holiday calories too. Merry Christmas and let’s all have a Happy New Year !

How to be remembered at a hair salon Part 1 of 2
by Katie Davis
L
ike the DMV, Las Vegas, and high school, beauty salons have the power to bring the ugly out of almost anyone — which is ironic, because one would assume the goal of going to such a place is to be notugly. I am well-versed in the desperate diva behavior that goes down in a salon. That’s not to say all clients are bad eggs, the good ones are just as memorable as the disastrous ones. Now, I have to tell y’all the things that salon owners, receptionists, and stylists will always remember about you, for better or worse. 1. They will remember if you try to bargain with the stylist for a better price. A hair salon is not a used car lot. The only time you should ask for special consideration is when you’re about to leave the salon looking like a zombie movie extra— otherwise, it’s inappropriate. An employee doesn’t have the clearance to rearrange the pricing structure of a business that doesn’t belong to them, and an independent stylist who rents a chair charges you what allows them to pay bills and buy products to use on your hair and like, eat and stuff.
JJ’s Hill Country Cleaning services
2. They will remember you if you cancel an appointment at the last minute. The idea of an appointment is that it is your special time. And not showing up for your special time means someone else is gypped out of special time they could’ve had. So here’s a block of time wherein money was supposed to be made but is now just a twohour window for the stylist to sit around facebooking. That’s unfair. If your income were dependent on people sticking to their word and showing up when they said they would, you would understand how this is unfair. To be continued in next issue. Katie has been in the beauty industry for more than 20 years. She is a member of the Rusk Color Team, owner and stylist at Tin Star Salon. 319 Earl Garrett in Kerrville. Call her at 895-5030.

How my Smartphone found my hearing aid
A
t first glance, you might think this is a joke. You might ask yourself, “Why do I need my smartphone to find my hearing aids? They’re right there in my ears.” Recently a man was trimming trees on his ranch. He was wearing a hearing aid in his left ear and didn’t notice it had gotten knocked off. When he got home that evening, he realized his hearing aid was missing. The man checked the locator feature on his smartphone and saw that the hearing aid was not in his car or in his house––it was somewhere out on the ranch. The following morning he set out to find his hearing aid, using his smartphone with the locator app. The GPS locator guided him to the place where he had been trimming trees the previous day. Apparently, one of the branches had brushed the side of his head and knocked the hearing aid off his ear.
How did the smartphone know where to find his hearing aid? Some of today’s hearing devices are “paired” to smartphones using Bluetooth. The phone and the hearing device communicate with each other every so often. The phone keeps track of the last GPS location where it communicated with the hearing device. So when the man checked the locator app on his phone, it told him where the smartphone and the hearing aid had communicated with one another. When he got close to the hearing aid, the locator app detected a Bluetooth signal being sent out by the hearing device. He pushed back some brush, and there was the hearing aid. For more information about current technology available in hearing devices, contact Hill Country Audiology Service to schedule an appointment with one our audiologists.

Enrich a W life with hot meals and warm smiles
hat would happen in your later years if you couldn’t leave your home? Couldn’t shop for food? Couldn’t prepare a meal? Who would help you survive? The Dietert Center would! For forty-seven years, Dietert has been feeding Kerr County’s elderly. A hot, nutritious meal is the lifeline that keeps many of our oldest citizens independent and in their homes. Every weekday, Dietert’s “Meals On Wheels” program provides a hot lunch and warm friendship to 280 frail elders. Many are disabled and on limited incomes. More than 68,000 meals were delivered by smiling, dedicated volunteers in Kerr County last year.
by Tina Woods
“In many cases, our volunteers are the only people these elders see,” says Pat Hudgins, Dietert’s Meals On Wheels Coordinator.
added. “We know they need to eat—no senior in Kerr County should go hungry!” Because meals are available by donation, funds for this vital service are always in short supply. One home-delivered lunch costs $7.02 to produce, including food, labor, packaging, and operating expenses. This year, $211,423 must be raised to keep this critical program going. You can help feed a senior by donating meals for a day, a week, a month, or even a year. Donations can be made on our website, mailed or dropped off. Our seniors thank you! Tina Woods is the Dietert Center’s Executive Director. Contact her at (830) 792-4044, ext. 247, or visit the Center’s website: www. dietertcenter.org. The Dietert Center is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization located at 451 Guadalupe Street in Kerrville.
Getting Meals On Wheels starts with a phone call to (830) 792-4044. For those who qualify, meals are available on a donation basis. “We don’t put folks on a waiting list,” Hudgins

The Outdoor Guy
Look around you . . . The beauty that God has blessed us with in the Hill Country is incredible. I know there are other attributes that make our area a retiree’s dream, but for many it is that first drive out of San Antonio or Austin . . . as the hills grow larger and valleys grow wider, even the sky seems to open up to twice as big as in the city. For some, it is a memory of the drive to summer camp as a child through the magical Hunt area. We recently talked to a couple that met at Mo Ranch fifty years ago. As northerners, their only tie to Texas was that one week here long ago; yet they still chose to retire in the beautiful hills of Central Texas! I’ve said many times: “If you think it’s so beautiful here, why do you try to turn your yard back into Houston?!?” Nothing against Houston, you can really insert Dallas, Virginia, or California in its place if you wish. Other regions in the world have differences in soil types, climate, terrain, and plants that thrive there may not even survive here. The point is to look around you. Look. Reflect. Think about the 40 | Nov-Dec 2016 | Kerr County People
characteristics that you admire in your surroundings. The way that evergreens cover the hills . . . the way that large grasses grow up to the edge of a stream bed . . . the stream bed itself, with gentle waterfalls and swirls, with polished river stones in a myriad of sizes and colors . . . the fields of native grasses that sway and move in the wind like ripples on a lake . . . the magnificent fields of bluebonnets and wildflowers in the spring. Nature has tested many plant types and landscape scenarios over the past few thousand years. She knows what she’s doing. We should learn from her! Long ago I was told that if I needed financial advice, to not ask my broke brother-in-law, but to talk to someone who has made and kept a lot of money. The same is true of gardening and landscaping. Find someone who has kept a beautiful landscape for years and enquire as to the nature of their success. Most are proud and happy to share their secrets. Don’t read a magazine article or watch HGTV and think you can carbon copy a project in Connecticut. But people get tunnel vision when it comes to their yard. I have asked folks why they planted a certain plant in their yard, or why they did things a certain way. After looking dumbfounded for a moment, the answers would be “That’s how I did it where I’m from,” or “I bought it at (insert big box store name with an employee in the garden center who has only been there two weeks and couldn’t tell a lantana from a rosemary who told them an Indian Hawthorne (rhaphiolepis indica) was native and deer proof! Wrong, and wrong, unless you’re in Asia.
Boogie drink
If you’re going to do your own gardening, at least buy from a local provider with someone that knows what they are doing, like Trena at the Plant Haus. It’s really common sense, but common sense has become a superpower these days. Even if you have confidently gardened for years successfully, there is much you can learn from someone that lives and breathes plants and dirt daily. I’ve been in this business for twenty-plus years, and I still learn on a daily basis. Look for opportunities in your landscape to mimic your surroundings. Consider making a native grass and wildflower meadow in an area where turf grass has never thrived. A drainage area that holds water after rains, consider installing a dry stream bed. How does nature handle the challenges you are facing? Look around you . . . it’s amazing sometimes what we can learn just by slowing down and observing what is happening around us. Nature will never be angry with you for copying what it has done successfully. Whether you believe in man-made climate change or not, there is no doubt we need to conserve and take care of our resources on a local level. Water is only going to become more precious as our population expands and droughts continue. Soils are depleted from improper gardening practices. Chemicals sprayed indiscriminately kill both bad and good fungus, bacteria, and insects. It’s time to seek help from time-tested methods, to learn what works and what doesn’t, it is time to wake up and smell the compost . . . LOOK AROUND YOU!
“Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery.” Zack Derese has deep roots in Kerrville. As owner of Kerrville Landscaping, Inc., he has been in the landscape business for over 15 years. He is a Landscape Designer, holds an Irrigation License (LI#9453), a Backflow Prevention License (BPAT #10754), is NCMA certified for Segmental Retaining Walls, and is a Water Feature Specialist. his sparkling little glass-enclosed shop on the first floor is many things to the visitors, staff, and patients of Peterson Regional Medical Center. And the best kept “retail secret” in town. It’s a trendy boutique filled with jewelry, colorful scarves, intriguing purses, and the latest fashionable apparel for the discriminating shopper. It’s also a florist shop where fresh floral arrangements or cheerful balloon bouquets can be purchased.
It is the “baby place” for clothing and gifts to welcome the newest member of the family or to congratulate the new parents. There are toys for young children and plush animals for both the young and not so young—but “young-at-heart.” It features interesting home décor—crosses, candles, plaques, sachets, and angels.
