Facials There are many to choose from depending on what you need—soothing facials, cleansing facials, exfoliating facials, and the HydraFacial. According to Kathy the latter is not really a facial at all—it’s a skin health treatment and includes all the benefits of the other facials. Kathy notes, “Bella Luz MD was the first to bring this treatment to the Hill Country and it has been warmly received by all. It instantly became the foundation treatment for any skin health and aesthetic program. Since introducing the HydraFacial MD, Bella has performed more than two thousand treatments.”

Dermal Fillers Bella uses several kinds to diminish facial lines and restore volume and fullness in the face. Over the years, these dermal fillers have improved significantly and their use has become specific for the particular areas of the face needing treatment. In addition, advanced techniques and skills can enhance outcomes. “While fillers are a great tool,” explains Kathy, “it’s the art of applying the fillers that can give our guests the wow factor. Artistic ability is acquired over years of experience and it’s what separates a ‘great’ injector of dermal fillers from a ‘good’ injector.”
Michelle Schmidt Aesthetician
Threads and Threading Referred to by some as the “non-surgical facelift,” face threading utilizes tiny dissolvable threads underneath the surface of your skin to lift and tighten specific areas—with results that last up to a year and a half or more. “Face threading is natural,” Kathy adds, “you basically can get an instant lift, there's no surgical risk, and barely any downtime. Because the thread is made from the same material as surgical sutures, it dissolves within six months and actually helps to stimulate collagen production in the skin. Those with advanced signs of aging will typically see continued on next page very dramatic results.”

Vanquish If you’re having trouble with stubborn fat deposits around your waist, stomach, back, and thighs but are hesitant to undergo a surgical procedure, then Vanquish may be a good choice for you. The procedure disrupts fatty cells through the selective heating of adipose tissue and the process leads to fatty cell shrinkage and elimination. “Vanquish is a one-of-a-kind, noninvasive, painless fat reduction system that has proven results with no surgery, no pain, and no downtime,” Kathy says. “While Vanquish is not an excuse to overeat or not to exercise, you can have a meaningful reduction in fat with its use.”
Skincare Products While fillers, threads, Botox, and Vanquish can make dramatic improvements to your glow, as well as shave off some years from your appearance, another critical element to having glowing, healthy skin is the proper use of skincare products. The ones that work. Also necessary in the age management equation is having a knowledgeable, experienced aesthetic practitioner evaluate the needs of your skin and create an action plan using products that have been developed based on solid science. These are prescription-grade skincare products you won’t find in the department store. “At Bella, SkinMedica products rule,” notes Kathy, “because they work. The Bella staff has witnessed glowing results in guest after guest after the proper use of SkinMedica products. Daily use of the right skincare products can make a huge difference in skin health and beauty.”
Putting it All Together That’s what Bella does with a personalized plan for every guest. And it’s okay to take baby steps; everything doesn’t have to be done at once. Kathy concludes, “It’s a process—you should be knowledgeable and comfortable all the way. Yes, it takes some work. But how fortunate you are to have all of these resources in Kerrville where Bella Luz MD offers big city results with Hill Country hospitality.” Call Bella Luz MD for your complimentary consultation today. Kathy wants to know what’s bothering you about your appearance and offer you her expert advice backed by twelve years of medical aesthetic experience. 830792-3552. BACK Y A R D BI R DI N G
Ready for a backyard invasion? by Kevin & Linda Pillow
E
very September, those who supply bird food eagerly await the Winter Finch Forecast Report. The Finch Forecast, compiled by Ron Pittaway, predicts a strong finch irruption this winter.
So what exactly is an irruption year and why does it matter? An irruption is a dramatic, irregular migration of large numbers of birds to areas where they aren’t typically found, often at great distances from normal ranges. Famine can force them to seek more plentiful habitats until seeds, flowers, and insects return in the spring. It’s important to note that many winter birds gather in flocks for the season, but that does not mean they are irrupting. It truly is characterized by a distinct shift in the birds’ typical winter range. Most backyard birders look forward to bird irruptions bringing large numbers of new guests to their feeders. The most common factor to an irruption is a lack of food in the birds’ normal wintering grounds. This year, a lack of cone and birch seeds in the northeast and Ontario will push them south, looking for food. Even though an irruption is predicted, it doesn’t mean that the birds will get all the way down here, but they usually do. The Hill Country’s last irruption was in 2015 and not only did we have a plethora of birds, they stayed until late April. There are sixteen species of birds that can irrupt, but for our area be on the lookout for the American goldfinch, pine siskin, and red-breasted nuthatch. Goldfinch and siskins love nyjer and black oil sunflower chips, while nuthatches love peanuts. If they do indeed irrupt, you’ll want to keep your feeders filled with these foods to enjoy the show. If you’re wondering how you’ll know if we’re having an irruption year, don’t worry, you’ll know!

fter signing a contract to purchase a home or piece of land and escrowing the contract with a title company, you’ll receive a title commitment. We get frequent calls from buyers asking, “What did you just send me?” or “What do I do with this document?” Below is some basic information about the commitment.
ABCs of The Title Commitment Schedule A This portion of the title commitment contains basic information about the proposed transaction, including proposed policy amount, current owner of record, and legal description of the property. Tip: Make sure each of these items is consistent with your signed contract.
Schedule B Here you’ll find exceptions from coverage. These items were discovered during the title search and include items such as property restrictions, mineral reservations, and easements that run across the property. The title policy will not insure against loss from problems listed in Schedule B. Tip: Check Schedule B for restrictions on the use of the property. Talk to the title company if you have concerns.
Schedule C This section lists requirements that must be met before closing. Common requirements include paying taxes and paying off existing liens against the property. Tip: Talk to the title company about fulfilling unusual requirements to avoid a delay in closing.
A title commitment offers a statement of the terms and conditions on which the title company is willing to issue you a title policy. Take time to read the document and ask questions before your closing.

hat would happen in your later years if you couldn’t leave your home? Couldn’t shop for food? Couldn’t prepare a meal? Who would help you survive? The Dietert Center would! For forty-nine years, Dietert has been feeding Kerr County’s elderly. A hot, nutritious meal is the lifeline that keeps many of our oldest citizens independent and in their homes. Every weekday, Dietert’s Meals On Wheels program provides a hot lunch and warm friendship to approximately 280 frail elders. Many are disabled and on limited incomes. More than 68,000 meals were delivered by smiling, dedicated volunteers in Kerr County last year.

IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII SPE CI A L I N TER ES T
From the l u o S d n a t r a e H By Anne Schneider
The Texas Hill Country: A Photographic Adventure Open this book and you’ll step into the glorious past, present, and future of the Texas Hill Country—stackedstone fences and limestone cottages of German pioneers, sparkling river waters slipping past majestic cypress trees, wineries welcoming visitors with home-bottled reds and whites. The Texas Hill Country: A Photographic Adventure is a visual banquet, delighting the senses and evoking both strong memories and a determination to explore this landscape yourself. A Texas love affair
Mike Marvins, a fourth generation professional photographer, has known and loved the Texas Hill Country since he was a one-year-old. In his latest book, he introduces you to its charm through his skilled lens and heartfelt devotion—creating an unparalleled photographic adventure. “As a child, I attended camp in the Hill Country and so did my son,” recalls Mike. “Some of my favorite memories come from when I was a teenage camp counselor. Between camp sessions, the staff would take off to roam the back roads and sleep under the stars. We’d stop along the way at beer gardens, bakeries, and every swimming hole we could find.” After graduating from college and finishing his service in the Army, Mike lived in Houston where he volunteered as a Boy Scout leader. He frequently took his Scouts to the Hill Country for their campouts. Additionally, the Texas Professional Photographer Association’s annual convention held in the Hill Country repeatedly drew him back to these hills.
Calling the Hill Country home
Twelve years ago Mike and his wife Mickey decided to keep a home on the beautiful Guadalupe River they love so much. They now divide their time between Houston and Ingram, Texas.
Mike and Mickey Marvins 26 | NOV-DEC 2018 | KERR COUNTY PEOPLE MAGAZINE
“We’re here for the summers,” Mike says, “and other times throughout the year. We spend a lot of time exploring back roads and little towns—looking for things like festivals and fairs, rodeos and dance halls.”
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII A book is born
It was on one of these road trips that Mike came up with the idea for his book. He literally drove down memory lane to see the camp he knew as a youngster. “The camp was long gone; a small development in its place,” Mike adds. “But the river hadn’t changed a bit. That’s what inspired me to revisit all the places I went to as a teenager.” Mike’s photographic adventure then began in earnest. He found many places still the same decades later while others had changed, some for the best. The essence of Mike’s quest persisted and with his photographer’s eye guided by his love of the Hill Country, he successfully encapsulated its beauty and tranquility for his book. Mike concludes with an inspirational quote by photographer Paul Caponigro. “I always keep this quote in the back of my mind—‘The key is to let the camera reveal not just what the eye picks up but what the heart picks up as well."
The Texas Hill Country: A Photographic Adventure is so more than a visual documentation of places—this stirring collection of images rise from Mike’s heart and soul, sharing his love of these beautiful sites with everyone who opens his book. Published by Texas A&M Press, one hundred percent of this book’s proceeds go to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation—supporting the over twenty state parks and natural areas in the Hill Country. The book devotes a major portion of its 285 photographs to Kerr County, making it a must-have for us all. And what a wonderful holiday gift Mike’s book will make for those who share his passion for the Hill Country. Get your copies today.

eed thoughtful gifts for holiday gatherings? Try forcing bulbs— they’re easy, fun, and best of all— inexpensive.
by Trena Cullins
Paperwhites, daffodils, and amaryllis are beautiful choices. Later they can be planted outdoors to bloom year after year. Forcing bulbs in a container without drainage is simple. Layer the container with horticultural charcoal on the bottom about one-quarter deep and pebbles about three-fourths of the way to the top. Plant your bulb in the pebbles (about two-thirds of the bulb should be showing). Then fill with water until the bulb’s base is covered. Place in a sunny location and in about two to three weeks it should almost be blooming. If you choose a decorative container with drainage, all you need is good potting soil. Use your imagination to add decorations, ribbon, and a sweet card. For another fun idea, try planting in a pumpkin. Cut off the top and scoop out the seeds. Fill the cavity with potting soil
and plant with pansies, herbs, or violas. Unfortunately, the pumpkin will only last a few days; when it begins to wilt, place it in a flower pot with soil. As it deteriorates it will be a catalyst for the plants’ fertilizer. After the plants die in the heat you may be rewarded with a pumpkin plant. Our staff and kitties wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Certified Nursery Professional Trena Cullins (#4985) has been with the Plant Haus 2 for twenty years. The Importance of Self-Care by Lea Heflin Jimenez, MA, LMT
T
his busy holiday season has many of us adding extra events to our calendars and running around even more than before! There is a saying, “The time to relax is when you don’t have time for it.” We need to lean into our self-care when life is getting hectic, not displace it with the many other things happening in life.
What is self-care? Self-care is the mindful taking of time to pay attention to you, in a way that ensures that you are being cared for by you. Notice how many times, you is mentioned in that last definition? But, don’t go and consider self-care a selfish act. When you are taking good care of yourself, and your proverbial cup is full, you have more to give. Self-care gives you the resources to be compassionate to others as well as yourself. More benefits of making sure you are taking great care of yourself include better productivity, improved resistance to disease, enhanced self-esteem, and increased selfknowledge. When we are able to say ‘no’ to things that don’t serve us, we stop over-extending ourselves, and are able to bring our true goals into sharper focus. Self-care activates our parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), when we are in restful and rejuvenating mode, and this in turn fortifies the immune system.

What kinds of things can we do for our self-care? You can do something physical, like yoga or go for a walk. How about something emotional, such as keeping a daily journal, or making time to see a friend who truly understands you? Spiritually you can begin a daily meditation/mindfulness practice or attend a service. To access self-care on the sensory level, we can choose to calm our minds with focusing on our breathing or having a massage therapy session with essential oils. A good rule is to check in with yourself daily and rank yourself both physically and mentally/spiritually on a scale of 1 to 10. The goal is to not allow yourself to get above a certain number, leading to possible burnout. Protect Your Home Against These by Amber Thomason
Common Causes of House Fires What are some common causes of house fires?
Devastating home fires are all too common. Every year, there are nearly 358,500 home fires in the United States. And many of those are fatal—81 percent. The real tragedy is that so many of these fires can be prevented. By taking the basic precautions listed here, you could stop a disaster before it starts.
What causes home fires?
Cooking is the leading cause of home fires in the United States, starting almost half of all fires. Heating is the second highest cause, followed by electrical systems/lighting equipment and intentional fires. Smoking is the fifth highest cause, but is the leading cause of civilian home fire deaths. Candles are also a significant cause and are responsible for approximately 24 home fires reported every day.
Cooking fires
Follow these tips from the National Fire Protection Association: • Be alert. If you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol, don’t use the oven or stove. • Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you need to leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the oven or stove.
Heating equipment
• Consider replacing older area or space heaters with new ones that turn off automatically when overheated or tipped. Keep them at least three feet away from anything flammable. • Have furnaces and chimneys professionally cleaned and inspected every year.
Electrical systems and equipment
• Have your home inspected by a qualified electrician, especially when purchasing an older home. • Use a qualified electrician when having electrical work done.
Candles
Each year, candle fires account for hundreds of thousands of dollars in property damage and hundreds of unnecessary injuries and deaths. • Only burn candles under constant supervision.
Smoking
• Smoke outside. Many things in your home can catch on fire if they touch something hot like a cigarette or ashes. It is always safer to smoke outside.
If you spot a fire, call 911 immediately. Can’t find the source of the smell? Contact your fire department—it’s better to be safe than sorry. If there’s no fire but you suspect a mechanical or electrical problem, contact a licensed repairman as soon as possible. Practice fire prevention year-round with these tips from State Farm®.

PMRC Auxiliary hosts district meeting
T
he Texas Association of Hospital Volunteers (TAHV) has been enhancing healthcare services in Texas since 1944 with over 200 healthcare member auxiliaries. PRMC Auxiliary has been a member since its founding in 1977. On September 17, our Auxiliary was pleased to host a district meeting at the Cailloux Theater. State officers were in attendance and thirteen auxiliaries answered the roll call with representatives from San Antonio, Fredericksburg, Kenedy, Del Rio, Uvalde, New Braunfels, Carrizo Springs, Eagle Pass, and Seguin.
Back Row: Beverly Bond, PRMC Auxiliary President, with TAHV State Officers Kathy Jenkin, Gypsie Hufnagle, and Stephen Apple. Front Row: PRMC Auxiliary Officers Lynda DeMasco, Sharon LaTour, Tom Brady, and Joan Cone.
PRMC volunteer, Lynda DeMasco, chaired the Breakfast catered by Peterson Health. Planting the Seed of Volunteerism themed meeting, which was carried out in beautiful floral arrangements, clever stage decorations, and attendee goodie bags. A catered breakfast was served in the lobby of the Cailloux Theater and a scrumptious luncheon with a style show at Tucker Hall. Delightfully wrapped door prizes were given away. There was entertainment by local musician Chris Huber, and everyone was delighted by the kindergarten children from St. Peter’s who sang the blessing at lunch.
Jackie George, with Christus Santa Rosa, San Antonio, wins $150 door prize donated by Fischer & Weiser.
