Finds—not your ordinary resale store. Kerrville residents voted Finds “Best Resale/Thrift Store” three years in a row— 2015, 2016, and 2017. Owned and operated by the nonprofit Victorious Walk Ministries, this unique enterprise takes a concept, grows it, and involves lots of players.

Still Lives Here

Making Resale an Experience changing lives on both sides of the counter “The primary purpose for Victorious Walk Ministries is to minister to those in need,” explains Finds Store Manager Chris Bynum. “We knew Kerrville already had some great support services so we asked ourselves what we might do differently to help.” Finds’ other major player Sheryl Howard continues, “We determined that the Ministries’ purpose could be achieved by providing supported training and employment through the resale shop to individuals who would otherwise not have jobs or be ready for regular employment.” Through these efforts and Finds’ sales proceeds, Victorious Walk Ministries helps Hill Country area nonprofit organizations who share the same goal. Offering the best of both worlds Located next door to each other, Finds’ two warehouses (with a combined total of 22,000 square feet) offer two distinctive shopping experiences—and you never know what you’ll find. Inventory donations come in daily, allowing both stores to constantly restock. continue to page 12

“If you shop there in the morning, you might find 200 different items have hit the floor by the afternoon. Every day, every week,” says Chris. “And because of our generous donation base, Finds Resale is able to offer more than the average store. Its creative merchandising display further enhances that encounter for our shoppers.” Sheryl adds, “We know the customer wants a variety of items, too. Next door at Finds Clearance and Finds on a Hanger at 515 Hays, they’ll discover exactly what they’re looking for.” The synergy of these businesses conveniently located next door to each other makes them ideal for locals and visitors to shop from the best of both worlds at these remarkable resale/thrift stores. An added weekly bonus is Finds’ Wild Wednesday Warehouse Sale at the 515 Hays location from noon till 1:30 p.m. Cheap items sold even cheaper. It’s cash only and BYOB—bring your own bag. “No matter which Finds warehouse you shop, you’ll save money while recycling gently used items into your own special finds—in the process, helping to create jobs and improve lives,” reminds Chris. Finds’ success depends on our community’s charitable donation of goods—welcoming the tax-deductible donations of gently used and sellable furniture, books, jewelry, home décor, linens, art, tableware, small appliances, electronics, craft materials, yard art, tools, and more. Think fine collections you no longer want or have space for. An estate of items no one in the family can use. A garage sale you don’t have time to organize or operate. Finds will take it all for you and provides free pickup service.

Nida, Joe and Roy unload a new delivery

A history of giving Victorious Walk Ministries is a faith-based, IRS approved, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organized in 2005. Focus is on individuals seeking better lives and fulfillment by applying Christian principles in their families and in their work. Teaming up early on, Chris and Sheryl have been working in retail since 2007. In 2012, taking resale to a new level for good causes, they opened Finds and Finds on a Hanger. One nonprofit recipient benefitting from Finds is the Kerr County Meals on Wheels program. Finds brings the spectacular annual tablescape show “Tables for Good” to Kerrville’s Dietert Center. Partnering with its host, Finds sets festive elaborately decorated tables at the Center. According to Sheryl, the popular show and sale is “absolutely the most fun you can have with dishes—we love setting tables as an art form.” Raising thousands of dollars for Dietert Center’s Meals on Wheels program over the past seven years, “Tables for Good” serves to help keep Dietert’s volunteer drivers delivering more than 61,000 lunches annually to seniors throughout Kerr County who can no longer shop or prepare a meal. continue to page 14

And Finds gift cards are perfect for those on your list who love the ‘thrill of the hunt’ in resale/thrift shopping. “We’re so grateful for our community’s support of Finds,” Sheryl concludes. “It allows us to receive goods that no longer have value to those who had them before and then to recreate possibilities—to take what folks don’t want, treat it with respect, be creative, and pass it on.” Discover treasures with bargains galore at Finds. “

Historic preservation clearly does much more than preserve bricks and mortar. It recognizes that our built history connects us in tangible ways with our past and provides context for the places we occupy and the world we live in, stated Craig Potts, Executive Director of the Kentucky Heritage Council and State Historic Preservation Officer. In this truest sense, Kerrville residents Mark and Linda Stone continue to successfully utilize historic preservation principles to protect our local heritage as well as to contribute to revitalizing our community. This past summer after an arduous sponsorship application process completed by the Stones, three of their Kerrville properties received Recorded Texas Historic Landmark Markers: the Frank J. Beitel Lumberyard, the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Passenger Train Depot, and the Kennedy-Peterson House.

Kerrville’s Past one couple’s passionate fusion of history and functionality “I was a custom home builder in Kerrville for many years,” says Mark. “Linda is a scrimshaw artist. When we married 17 years ago we had the opportunity to join my skills with her vision. I hated to see the condition of our historic buildings being unappreciated so we started fixing up a few. We pursued the markers to add a level of protection, hoping the next owners and the public will understand their history better for the future.”

Frank J. Beitel Lumberyard – 425 Clay Street Now fondly referred to as the “Old House of Beitel,” the beautiful Events Hall houses Catering by Rails and boasts the original oak floors from over 125 years ago. The building’s beginnings were humble—Frank J Beitel journeyed from Germany with his parents in 1938, to start a new life in Texas.

In 1993, the property became known as Peddlers Square–a large and sprawling flea market. The Stones purchased the old Beitel property in July 2007, and in that same year began their journey on its major restoration. Mark details that process, “The lumber bins—having never been built on a foundation—weren’t able to be saved. The renovation utilized some of the wood and old doors. We also repurposed the old hail-damaged metal roofs now used on the walls in the back ‘lumber’ room. “The original cypress shingle roof can be seen on the overhang of the open outside patio. The front room was the original show room. Restoration included its oak floors, the fixing and painting of the decorative box-beamed ceiling, and the saving and relocation of the original display shelves.” continue to next page

Mark recounts, “When the SA&AP railroad decided to make Kerrville the last stop on its line, Beitel came to Kerrville from San Antonio where he owned lumberyards. For $800, he purchased about two acres along the tracks to establish a new lumberyard. In 1889, his Kerrville business consisted of a small building on Clay Street with open lumber bins along the tracks.” That lumberyard operated continuously for 104 years, making it one of the oldest yards in Texas. With this lumberyard, Beitel and his family helped establish the lumber industry in the southwest United States. In 1913, the original SA&AP wooden depot farther down the street burned down. Beitel sold a piece of his land to SA&AP for a new depot. He received a spur of the narrow gauge rail tracks onto his property, long enough for three cars to load and offload goods. “Beitel built two long buildings for retail space and lumber bins to line his new spur of the track,” says Linda. “This greatly increased his business and its efficiency. So the old depot and lumberyard share their histories.” The various owners and managers of this lumberyard lived, worked, and helped build Kerrville. Their individual lives touched a growing community. Members of our community today still recognize many of those names—Beitel, Saenger, Schreiner, Parker, Moore, Simms, Du Menil. KERR COUNTY PEOPLE MAGAZINE | NOV-DEC 2017 | 19

LUMBERYARD NOW

Continued from previous page

“The huge old Diebold file safe from Canton, Ohio, was cleaned and left in place,” continues Linda. “Past this room were storage and stock rooms; now the space holds a serving kitchen, rest rooms, storage, and the back ‘lumber room’ that hosts smaller events. The old building leans to the south and has a few other age spots showing, but it was restored with love.”

TRAIN DEPOT NOW

Linda and Mark Stone with Linda’s mother Barbara Karst.

San Antonio & Aransas Pass Passenger Train Depot – 615 Schreiner Street

Mark explains, “Most depots of the time were built of wood but this structure was built of brick inside and out because of the fire that destroyed the first Kerrville depot. The masonry arches that accented the original street entry and open waiting platform remain intact.”

Today known as Rails a Café at the Depot, the 102-yearold brick depot still mirrors its original charm. Built in 1915, it greeted Kerrville’s growing number of summer tourists in comfort upon their arrival at the new depot. The SA&AP Railway was a popular line that took people and trade to “the mountain resorts” and “the finest health country in America”—as the Texas Hill Country was then celebrated.

The waiting platforms’ open arches were filled in with windows and brick after the trains stopped running in 1970. The original large 4’x7’ windows and doors remain in place—most still have the old-fashioned wavy glass. Now Schreiner Street covers the railroad tracks.

The March 20, 1915, edition of the Kerrville Mountain Sun reported on the big news that a new train depot was planned. The newspaper article quoted SA&AP General Manager J. S. Peter: “The people of Kerrville have been patient and long suffering in the matter of passenger depot facilities, and we are now going to build them a depot that will be an ornament and a credit to the town…the structure is to be of brick and will be modern throughout. When completed it will be one of the handsomest passenger depots in a small town in the state.”

According to Mark when he and Linda began their restoration of the property in 2003, they wanted to “restore the early architectural integrity.” The process began by removing several additions from the depot’s days as Choo Choo’s Barbecue restaurant, which hid the original architecture. “Outside we added patios surrounded by a short brick and iron fence,” says Linda. “We put in landscaping and a fountain to the south and west sides of the building to compliment the structure and set up a nice outdoor dining space. The depot with its landscaped gardens creates a special place to enjoy history right in the Kerrville Main Street District.”

Kennedy-Peterson House – 840 Earl Garrett Street An exceptional single story wood framed residence, the House exhibits early 20th century Victorian Free Classic Style. It serves now as elegant office space for several businesses and has hosted stylish art galleries as well. In 1914, C. W. Moore built this house for seven-term Texas State Representative Austin Milton Kennedy (1866-1914) who was one of two speakers during the 31st Legislature. Kennedy relocated to Kerrville with his wife Marion for the fresh mountain air to assist in his struggles with tuberculosis. Linda shares, “Starting in the mid-1880s, thousands of tuberculosis patients and their families flocked to Kerrville in hopes that the Hill Country air would dry up the moisture in their lungs and cure them of the disease. In those days TB killed one out of every seven people living in the United States and Europe.” Constructed on Mountain Street (now named Earl Garrett), the house received the cool breeze off the river. We can imagine their home’s large wrap-around porch with eleven wooden columns beckoning the Kennedy family to enjoy the pleasant comfort of our region. Sadly, Kennedy died just over three months after they moved into the house. In 1919, Sid and Myrta Peterson purchased the house for $2,250 and lived there for ten years. The street on the north side of their property was named for Myrta. The Peterson name is still well known in the Texas Hill Country for their early interests and ranching empire that in 1945, funded a charitable foundation that continues its generous assistance to many local organizations— notably the Peterson Regional Medical Center. “With Phil and Marlene Grothues, Linda and I purchased the Kennedy-Peterson House in 2005,” remembers Mark. “A photograph we found in a 1920 edition of the local magazine Grinstead Graphics inspired us to restore the house to honor both its historic families.” In addition to the house’s impressive porch and columns, the original beveled glass door unit with matching sidelights further distinguishes the home. The original wood sash windows remain, most with their wavy glass, and interior details include handcrafted ornamental transom fretwork. “The home contains the original masonry fireplace with ornate corbelled chimney and beautiful longleaf pine surrounds and mantle,” Linda adds. “We’re grateful the renovations could restore the historical integrity of this unique house.” And our community is grateful to Mark and Linda Stone for their priceless gifts to us from the past—the restoration and preservation of our community’s history in these three exceptional properties. IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII Symphony Foundational of theHills FEEDERS

BACK Y A R D BI R DI NG

by Kevin & Linda Pillow

T

here are thousands of feeders available. How do you make the right choice? First, think about the purpose of your feeder. Do you need a foundational feeder, a fat feeder, a nectar feeder or a finch feeder? If in doubt, always go with a foundational feeder first—that is a feeder which holds a blend of seeds that will attract 80 percent of your local yearround residents. If you’re like most, you probably can’t get around to filling feeders every day so choosing a foundational feeder that can hold up to four days’ worth of food will ensure that there is always a food source for the birds visiting your backyard.

So what exactly is a foundational feeder? Generally, it would be a large-capacity hopper-style. A classic hopper feeder has a chamber for food, a roof, and ledges for perching and it can be suspended or mounted on a pole. There are large-capacity squirrel-proof feeders that can be hung in trees. A more convenient choice would be cylinder feeders. Bird food cylinders are bird food (seeds and nuts) that is held together with gelatin in the form of a cylinder. These cylinders can be simply slipped in an appropriate feeder and can last up to ten days. Cylinders also come in a hot pepper variety that squirrels and raccoons won’t bother. When picking a feeder there are some points to consider before you purchase. Some feeders just don’t really meet the birds’ needs—or yours. Check to see that birds can easily land on it and actually obtain food. Look for a feeder that will keep the seed dry and not let mold grow. Then from your point of view, is the feeder easy to fill and clean? Choose one that doesn’t have a lot of parts that could easily get lost in the grass when filling. There are feeders available that avoid all of these problems. Just keep in mind when shopping for a foundational feeder that it should do more than just hold food. Happy Birding! Kevin & Linda Pillow are the proud owners of Wilds Birds Unlimited Nature Shop located at 855 Junction Hwy in Kerrville. Each staff member is a Certified Bird Feeding Specialist and can help you discover a refuge in your own backyard.

Open enrollment for Medicare coverage begins October 15, 2017 and ends December 7, 2017. During the enrollment period, a Medicare participant can elect to change coverage from Traditional Medicare to a Medicare Advantage Plan OR from a Medicare Advantage Plan back to Traditional Medicare coverage. You should not change your Medicare coverage unless you have spoken to your physician, the hospital you normally use, your DME company, your pharmacist or your home health agency. Often the Medicare Advantage Plans are not accepted by physicians, hospitals, out-patient labs/x-rays, or home health agencies. Say Yes to a Stress-free by Stacy Whittemore

W

ith the holidays right around the corner, it’s the perfect time to check out a new treasure on Earl Garrett Street—Essential Escape Massage. Treat yourself with an appointment before the chaos of shopping and tree trimming starts. And while you’re there, remember those on your Christmas list with gift certificates from Essential Escape Massage. 32 | NOV-DEC 2017 | KERR COUNTY PEOPLE MAGAZINE

Soft lights, soothing music, tasteful décor, and a luxuriantly draped massage table greet you when you enter—enticing you to relax and let all your cares slip away. You know you’ve found a slice of heaven right here in Kerrville once Essential Escape Massage owner Lea Heflin offers your choice of calming aromatherapy and begins her skillful massage.

Holiday Season with Essential Escape Massage Essential Escape Massage came to Kerrville this past spring after fifteen successful years in San Antonio. Lea is a hometown girl, born and raised in Kerrville. After high school she moved to San Antonito to attend college. “I started out in psychology as my major,” Lea says, “but was drawn to massage therapy as a hands-on approach to healing people.” Her education includes her certification in Massage Therapy, a Bachelors Degree in Psychology, and a Masters Degree in Counseling from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Lea jumped at the opportunity to come back to Kerrville—its quaint feel and the people here have a huge place in her heart. She gives back to the community by offering discounts to community school teachers and professors. “I love this place,” says Lea. “The pace here is perfect for my family and me. Coming back to Kerrville was important to me. I love what I do and feel so privileged to help people with bodywork.” Lea shares some insights about massage misconceptions. “Sometimes people think a massage is a once in a while feel-good way to indulge or pamper yourself. To the contrary, massage can be a powerful tool to help you take charge of your health and well-being, whether you have a specific health condition or are just looking for stress relief. It seems as if we sometimes take better care of our cars than we do our bodies.” Massage can help with a variety of issues including migraines, fibromyalgia pain, reducing anxiety, improving balance in older adults, and postoperative pain. Lea

says, “Pain tells you something isn’t right and ignoring it can make it worse. My expertise is getting to the core of what helps you feel better and be more active. I have thousands of hours of working with clients, bringing a high-level of skill to my practice.”

Massage can be a powerful tool to help you take charge of your health and wellbeing.” Another common question Lea receives is whether you need to completely undress for a massage. Lea explains that at your appointment, she sits down with you before the session starts to go over any symptoms, your medical history, and what you’re hoping to get out of the massage. You determine your comfort level and amount of time. You only undress to the point you are comfortable or you may choose to wear loose-fitting clothing. During the session you are covered by a sheet on a comfortably heated padded table. Lea helps many people with a wide range of needs. She sees everything from top athletes and expecting moms, to those young at heart recovering from an illness or surgery. Marianne Hanley from Kerrville raves about recently discovering the services

at Essential Escape. “I noticed in the latest issue of Kerr County People there was an ad for Essential Escape Massage. I must tell you Lea is an extremely talented massage therapist. I started seeing her five weeks ago. My back and neck were in terrible pain and she really helped me. I’m happy to say I now am pain-free. I’ve had some great massages around town, but Essential Escape Massage is levels above the others. I am a fan and am pleased to recommend Lea.” Longtime client Mel Calata shares her family’s experiences with Lea. “We’ve been using Lea for ten-plus years now— that’s how great she is. We love how professional she is in all aspects of her business. You can tell she really cares about her clients and their well-being. She really listens to what you are experiencing and what you need during the session. No two sessions are the same—she’s adapting to how you’re feeling at that moment.” With these glowing reviews what are you waiting for? Appointments are easy to make—online or by phone. Essential Escape Massage is located at 615 Earl Garrett Street, above Sheila’s Total Body Care. Call today to discover the perfect place to relax and heal at Essential Escape Massage. 210-416-6884. EssentialEscapeMassage.com. Stacy Whittemore is a published author and freelance writer living in the Kerrville area. Her latest book, The First Straw, a Christmas story, is scheduled for release in November and will be available on Amazon. Stacy is also a Kitchen Coach at Wayfaringspoon.com. She loves to travel, write, and cook.

Community Art Lending Program Call for Artists Show space expanded to accept more

Monie Ewing

Peterson Health celebrated the 5th anniversary of the award-winning Community Art Lending Program with a reception for the 65 participating artists in September as part of National Rehabilitation Awareness Month. “Art is healing,” shares Lisa Winters, Director of Marketing and Community Relations, “and this program just gets bigger and better each year as the art on display inspires and motivates patients during their rehabilitation and offers our clinical staff opportunities to use the art as part of their therapy. ″ The Community Art Lending Program is structured to feature local and regional artists and photographers at Peterson’s Outpatient Rehabilitation Department at the Ambulatory Care Center (ACC). Recognized by the Texas Hospital Association as a “Showcase Award” winner, the changing and wide variety of art has garnered local and now state attention.

Carolyn Pepping

Located at 260 Cully Drive, adjacent to the main hospital, artists are invited to lend their works for three months at a time. Artwork is displayed down the main hallway from the reception area toward the rehabilitation gym, which is one of the busiest hallways in the facility. Just recently, a new wall was dedicated to the program, due to recent remodeling of the Wound Care Center. The former hallway and entrance to Wound Care has been closed in and is now a solid feature wall awaiting art which adds space for more than a dozen new pieces. Peterson Health is calling for new artists to submit work for display in the first quarter of 2018. Artists interested in submitting art for consideration should submit photos of available framed pieces.

Shirley Bell

If you are a local artist or photographer and would like to participate simply email photos of available pieces to Lisa Winters at lwinters@petersonrmc.com or call (830)258-7628. KERR COUNTY PEOPLE MAGAZINE | NOV-DEC 2017 | 37

Easy

The best of winter color is now available—pansies, snapdragons, violas, dianthus, ornamental cabbage and kale grow well during the winter and require very little care. These plants can freeze solid and still grow beautifully. Fertilize monthly and you’ll have gorgeous color all winter, even on those gloomy days.

Winter Color

by Trena Cullins

Poinsettias and Christmas cactus will fill your home with color as well. Keep both of these treasures out of drafty areas and keep moist, but not wet. Don’t fertilize your Christmas cactus while it’s blooming—wait until it isn’t blooming to encourage growth—it blooms on a light cycle, not fertilizer. Forcing flower bulbs is as easy as watching them grow. Container size can be as small or as large as you want. Daffodils, paper whites, and amaryllis can be forced to bloom in water or soil. To force them in water, simply fill the container with a

H

layer of charcoal on the bottom and decorative pebbles about 2/3 of the way to the top. Plant your bulb about 1/3 deep; fill the container with water to the bottom of the bulb. You’ll be enjoying beautiful blooms in about six to eight weeks. Our staff and kitties wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year!

Enriching Lives with Hot Meals and Warm Smiles by Tina Woods

W

hat would happen in your later years if you couldn’t leave your home? Couldn’t shop for food? Couldn’t prepare a meal? Who would help you survive? The Dietert Center would. For forty-eight years, Dietert has been feeding Kerr County’s elderly. A hot, nutritious meal is the lifeline that keeps many of our oldest citizens independent and in their homes. Every week day, Dietert’s Meals On Wheels program provides a hot lunch and warm friendship to approximately 280 frail elders. Many are disabled and on limited incomes. More than 65,000 meals were delivered by smiling, dedicated Kerr County volunteers last year.

MEALS ON WHEELS

“In many cases, our volunteers are the only people these elders see,” says Pat Hudgins, Dietert’s Meals On Wheels Coordinator. Getting Meals On Wheels starts with a phone call to (830) 792-4044. For those

Quality Care. Personal Touch

who qualify, meals are available on a donation basis. “We don’t put folks on a waiting list,” Hudgins adds. “We know they need to eat—no Kerr County senior should go hungry.” Because meals are available by donation, funds for this vital service are always in short supply. One home-delivered lunch costs $7.61 to produce including food, labor, packaging, and operating expenses. This year, $341,351 must be raised to keep this critical program going. You can help feed a senior by donating meals for a day, a week, a month, or even a year. Secure donations can be made on our website DietertCenter.org, mailed or dropped off. Our seniors thank you! Tina Woods is the Dietert Center’s Executive Director. Contact her at (830) 792-4044, ext. 247, or visit the Center’s website: DietertCenter.org. The Dietert Center is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization located at 451 Guadalupe Street in Kerrville.
