LulaBelle’s The sign in the window says “Happiness lives here.” Walk inside and you believe it—like a child believes in the Great Pumpkin and Santa Claus. A fairyland of colors, patterns, and textures greet you. More than likely, you’ll receive a big hug too. “LulaBelle’s Pirates & Pretties is that kind of place,” explains the children’s boutique founder and owner Lucy Sandidge Pearson. “You can feel the extraordinary energy when you come in the door.”

Kerrville’s unique boutique Four local mothers—all in the same family—lovingly operate LulaBelle’s. Attorney-at-Law Lucy Pearson and her three daughters—Heather Stebbins, Emily McRae, and Jennifer Imel—were all born and raised in Kerrville. As were Lucy’s sonsin-law Michael Stebbins, Chastan McRae, and Drew Imel. That provides a plentiful sampling of children—Lucy is known as “Grammy” to eight grandchildren, ages eighteen to one year.
looking glass into a land of love
Pirates & Pretties “But it’s not just about our family,” states Heather. “LulaBelle’s offers the community what it wants for their children—clothing beyond what they can find in a chain department store and a shopping experience with a difference you can feel.” “We also carry toys, puzzles, books, and our whimsical felted wallmounts—perfect for nurseries and children’s rooms,” reminds Lucy. “I’m tempted to take the French Poodle home to hang at my house.” But don’t worry, there’s plenty more of the mounted menagerie to choose from—including a unicorn, cat, frog prince, lamb, and bunny. As a bonus, LulaBelle’s carries pretties for grown-ups—gorgeous leather purses, colorful folk dresses from Mexico and Guatemala, and fabulous jewelry from Uno de 50. Frequent customer Lori Brown says, “I love shopping for myself at LulaBelle’s Pirates & Pretties. It’s fun, the women’s jewelry is awesome, and the Mexican tops and dresses keep me perfectly outfitted. The children’s clothes are so cute it makes me want to have kids all over again—my three boys would’ve loved to wear those little fishing shirts every day. And if I need a gift—for women or children— it’s where I go.” LulaBelle’s also provides a comfy couch strategically placed to provide the ideal waiting place for dads and granddads who would rather sit back and watch the fun. The playroom at the back of the boutique is a great place for little ones to express their creative urges on the chalkboard walls or at the miniature tables and chairs arranged just for them. “My favorite thing about LulaBelle’s is the people—all these ladies are very loving,” shares customer Kamme Jons. “The store is an inviting, warm place that I and my kids (Alivia-13, Tres-10, Josephine-6) look forward to visiting. Jennifer frequently makes suggestions for items I would like for me or my kiddos. And they’re constantly offering sales. I find new unique items that I can’t find other places—LulaBelle’s is definitely a go-to shopping spot in Kerrville.”
A dream come true
Once upon a time, a man and his wife moved to Kerr County in the 1940s. John and Jean Sandidge raised their family in the scenic Hill Country. John became Tivy High School’s band director and principal, as well as the choir director at First Presbyterian Church. Their daughter Lucy married and was blessed with three beautiful daughters. As a young mother she dreamed of owning a children’s clothing store. “But the girls were eensy then,” Lucy elaborates, “and besides, Kerrville already had a children’s shop.”
Jennifer’s smiling face greets customers. So Lucy went to school, became a sixth-grade teacher, and raised her kids. Fast forward to one morning in February 2015. Lucy’s daughters all grown and she a practicing attorney for nine years, she woke up one morning after dreaming vividly of the once-imagined children’s shop. The image came complete with the boutique’s name—Pirates & Pretties. Lucy remarks, “I had forgotten just how much I wanted to do this.” And because Lucy and her three daughters were bonded by their deep unconditional love for one another, they gathered as a family to focus on the dream. “We go beyond family,” emphasizes Lucy. “Tribe. Accumulated essence of one another. We are who we are as a whole, because of our intense and unwavering faith in God.” continued on next page Kerr County People | Sept-Oct 2016 | 11

vitro fertilization. Nine months later, Emily and Chastan welcomed healthy twin boys into their family.
The four women wholeheartedly agreed to jointly manifest the dream.
Lucy concludes, “There’s no family like ours—we feel so blessed.”
Jennifer remembers, “At the time I was working in foster care placement at an office on Water Street, across from an empty storefront. I knew Mom wanted the boutique to be downtown and suggested that we all go see the space. We loved its potential. “That was February. In March, we went to the Dallas Market. In May, we opened our doors. It was that quick.” Emily provides the end to this chapter of the story. “Heather suggested that Mom call the shop LulaBelle’s Pirates & Pretties— reminding her that Dad used to call her ‘LulaBelle.’”
That. That’s what you feel in this place of love. Step into the love. Visit LulaBelle’s Pirates & Pretties today for a spectacular collection of children’s and women’s clothing and accessories. (Newborn to 14/16) Need a gift shipped? Jennifer will be happy to help. 826 Water Street, Kerrville. 830-792-5822. www. piratesandpretties.com Anne Schneider is a Kerrville writer and author of Breath Found Along The Way, a book of poetry and face-cast mask art. And it just so happily happens that one of Heather’s daughters (Lucy’s oldest granddaughter) is named Lulu.
A family affair
Lucy’s three adult daughters share more than profound admiration for their mom’s dream come true. Jennifer acts as store manager and all of Lucy’s daughters participate in prayers, discussions, and decisions concerning LulaBelle’s Pirates & Pretties. “We call ourselves the Wolf Pack,” says Lucy. “We always run together.” “That being said, I’m not hands-on at the shop,” Heather claims. “With my husband, our four kids, plus my job as Kerr County Attorney, I can’t be there much.” But you can be assured that Heather’s four daughters Lulu (10), Jilian (8), Annabelle (5), and Story (1) are all stylish models for the oodles of delightful fashions from LulaBelle’s. Emily keeps busy outside of the boutique, too, with her husband and their six-year-old twin sons Brody and Paxton. She is also the devoted Registrar for Laity Lodge Youth Camp. “Our whole family is very close and we’re always together,” adds Emily. “We literally live within a one-mile radius of each other so it’s easy to have fun family barbecues and gatherings.”
Two sides of every story
Lucy’s family certainly seems to lead a charming storybook life. But like most of us, it’s seen its share of challenges. The entire family endured anxious long years as Emily fought to triumph over Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Through it all, the strong spiritual faith of these four remarkable women kept them going. Emily reflects, “Our family has crazy fun together—but we’ve had tragedy, as well. Our love brings us through it all.” “It’s why we’re so close,” offers Heather. “Why we hang tight.” That they do. After Emily’s permanently debilitating treatments for lymphoma, her sister Heather offered her own eggs for in12 | Sept-Oct 2016 | Kerr County People

his just doesn’t happen every day in the bird feeding world—something new to feed the birds. NutraSaff. This is exciting stuff for everyone who feeds birds.
NutraSaff is much like traditional Safflower seed in that it will deter squirrels and raccoons due to its bitterness. It will also deter problem birds like grackles, blackbirds, and cowbirds—they just don’t like it. So why is NutraSaff more desirable than traditional Safflower? It has an extremely thin outer hull—40% thinner— which makes it easier to crack open and it’s easier to digest. It has 15% more oil content, 25% higher protein and 30% higher fat content which all means more energy for the birds that consume it. And it’s non-GMO, organic, and chemical free! What does NutraSaff offer you? More birds! Birds love this stuff. Preliminary findings show birds prefer NutraSaff over traditional Safflower 2:1. Since the shell is thinner and softer the mess under your feeder isn’t as bad and it is much less likely germinate. Did we mention no squirrels and raccoons? Yep, they don’t like this seed. The Cardinals, chickadees, titmice, house finch and many others will flock to your feeder station, but not the squirrels. NutraSaff is a win-win for you and your birds. With the higher nutritional components, ease of opening and digesting, it’s a seed worth trying. Keep in mind that even though birds actually prefer this seed over black oil sunflower, if you are trying to eliminate squirrels, you will need to serve only NutraSaff at your feeder station. If you mix it with sunflower seed the squirrels will still get after it. They just won’t eat the NutraSaff.

E
ven after 38 years of picture framing, I continue to be surprised at the variety of unique, sentimental, and downright amazing treasures that people bring into our shop. Witnessing the transformations of these items as we frame them continues to be one of the most satisfying aspects of our work. The best art is personal, and what could be more meaningful than pieces of the past and present displayed for daily enjoyment? Audrey Sheftall with the dress she wore as a three-year-old.
20 | Sept-Oct 2016 | Kerr County People
What can be framed is only limited by your imagination. Some of what has come through our doors include:
Saturday 7:30 | Wine Recept
• military medals, flags, and photos • antique and new textiles such as christening gowns, bonnets, needlework, wedding lace, and handkerchiefs • collections gathered from years of travelling or a special trip • sports collectables and wearables of all sorts • children’s art, special letters, photos, and documents • personal pieces like grandpa’s pipes or mom’s needlework hoop and thimbles • memorabilia from a parent’s place of work or childhood home • accessories such as a collage of grandma’s costume earrings, a hand beaded bag or pop’s hat • records, concert tickets, and event ephemera • arrowheads and found objects of all sorts
Proper handling of someone’s personal or family history items, or creating a frame presentation for pieces that will become heirlooms, requires experience and attention to detail in preserving and protecting them. A skilled framer will take great care to ensure that the items are correctly mounted to provide support without permanently affixing anything to the heirloom. Conservation materials, from what is used and can’t be seen, to the mats and glass that enhance the presentation, will provide the best conditions for longevity. Framing design is done in collaboration with the
tion 6:30 customer, but we also like to share the process of the
“nuts and bolts” too, educating the customer on how we plan to put it together. We often take in-process photos to show interior elements built for the piece. Many times we have to handcraft mounting structures due to the unusual shape or delicate nature of what we are working with. Problem-solving through the specifics of a project can take a lot of technical know-how, and adept ingenuity. A pair of four-foot tall Victorian pipes, antique dolls, gossamer-fragile garments, and irreplaceable museum quality pieces come to mind.
Whether what you have to showcase is sublimely beautiful or delightfully silly, you should know that the best possible care is taken of it. Some of the most unexpected things, when showcased, rise to the level of extraordinary. Talk to your framer and ask questions so that you will have confidence in the materials, methods, and procedures that will be used. I feel privileged to be given the trust of customers to handle what is precious to them, knowing that seeing it well framed will give great satisfaction and joy for generations. Cynthia has a bachelor in fine art, extensive design experience, and has been professionally educated in picture framing. It’s for the Birds and So Much More . . . by Anne Schneider
M
aybe you grew up in a city and didn’t have the opportunity for hands-on experiences in nature. Perhaps you’re a busy parent and can’t quite find time to take your kids to the parks along our scenic River Trail. Or possibly you’re a senior and not as able as you once were to venture into nature to enjoy its beauty and simple pleasures. Then Kerrville’s Wild Birds Unlimited is the place for you—as well as all you nature lovers who never miss a chance to enjoy the great outdoors. Co-owner Linda Pillow says, “My husband Kevin and I do everything we can to support and honor the Wild Birds Unlimited mission statement—‘Bringing people and nature together through education.’ And our store’s new Nature Education Center is another exciting way to achieve that goal.”
Flight path to success
The Pillows moved to the Texas Hill Country from Southern California. In 2007, they bought the Wild Birds Unlimited franchise in Kerrville. Linda and Kevin experienced growing pains along the way—in order to host Linda’s popular ‘seed bag’ seminars for the public, the store had to be rearranged each time to accommodate all the participants. 26 | Sept-Oct 2016 | Kerr County People
Imagine moving bags and bags of premium bird seed, along with a mind-blowing selection of bird feeders, loads of decorative accessories for the yard, and lots of unique nature gifts. It was with gratitude and relief that Kevin and Linda expanded Wild Birds Unlimited into the space next door to their thriving business in River Oaks Shopping Center. Now our community is the beneficiary of yet another Wild Birds Unlimited metamorphosis—a vision the Pillows held for many years. Their long-imagined Nature Education Center has finally emerged— right next door to the store. Linda adds, “We’re thrilled about the second expansion of our original store space. We went from 900 square feet when we first started, to our present 5,000 square feet—plenty of space to welcome the public to our free educational programs and events.”
Up close and personal with nature
Wild Birds Unlimited’s new Nature Education Center welcomes guests to further explore, ask questions, and enjoy a variety of fascinating topics. Books and posters on subjects that include birds, Maryand Stewart bats, butterflies, bees line the walls of the new Center, along with plush animals for hands-on encounters—all in a bright open space. “We also have a state-of-the-art projector system that includes large wall-mounted screens for informational videos and PowerPoint presentations by experts in their fields of study,” says Linda.
Symphony of theHills PRESENTS
July’s grand opening event at Wild Birds Unlimited Nature Education Center featured a presentation with live predator birds from Last Chance Forever—a nonprofit organization dedicated to the rehabilitation and release of injured and orphaned raptors and birds of prey. A representative of the conservancy introduced the crowd pleasers—a bald eagle, a crested caracara, a great horned owl, two screech owls, a merlin, and a vulture. “At one point in the open house program we had ninety-one people here—both kids and adults—spellbound by the magnificent birds,” reports Linda.
More delights to come
Next on the Nature Education Center’s calendar is the September 10th, fall planting program by Junction’s Native American Seed Farm. Linda says, “The informative class will be followed by a handson planting session in Wild Birds Unlimited’s outdoor pollinator garden where we’ll create a Monarch butterfly migration station.”
October 6, 2016
The scheduled October program for the Center is a talk on bats by a representative from Old Tunnel State Park (Fredericksburg)—home of three million Mexican free-tailed bats.
CAILLOUX THEATER
Linda continues, “We have so many terrific local resources to share in our community. Eventually, we want to expand that even more to host presentations from other areas.” A “Backyard Bird Count” talk by Linda is also planned for the Nature Education Center, as well as kids’ summer programs next year—all at no charge to the public. “Kevin and I feel very strongly about giving back to the community that has been so generous and kind to us.” Visit Wild Birds Unlimited today and turn your yard into a bird feeding habitat that brings song, color, and life to your home. 855 Junction Highway, (830)895-7393, www.wbu.com/Kerrville. Vintage Market Days
returns to Kerrville IF you didn’t make it to Vintage Market Days in June, you don’t know what an upscale, vintage, diverse, and fabulous event you missed! You’ll want to climb mountains and cross rivers to get to this one. And if you’re among the lucky ones who attended, you’ll surely want to come to the November market also. Vintage Market Days® is a franchised vintage event which began in the Tulsa, Oklahoma area in 2011. By 2013, Vintage Market Days was being “licensed” to several vendors who wanted to take the market to other communities. By 2014, VMD had grown to eight event locations in five states. At that point it became a franchise. As of January 2016, Vintage Market Days has seventeen promoters bringing the vintage experience to you in the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Missouri, Tennessee, and our great state of Texas.
28 | Sept-Oct 2016 | Kerr County People
“As we grow there is one thing that will continue to be important to us, creating a charming family atmosphere for both our vendors and our customers. We hope you will have the opportunity to join us at one of our events!” says VMD founders Amy Scott and Dianna Brown. Franchisees Lorrie Vest and Annie Hansen became great friends over fifteen years ago while they were studying to become dental hygienists. They each had a love for old, neglected treasures that tell a story. Lorrie’s talents in decorating and all things vintage led her to open My Vintage Beehive, where she showcased her wares outside of an antique glamper boutique. As their love for cherished relics became one of the foundations of their friendship the two decided to join in a new venture. Soon, they became part of the Vintage Market Days family and are excited to be hosting their very own event in the beautiful Texas Hill Country of Northwest San Antonio—right here in Kerrville.

So text your friends, save the date, and plan to make a fun-filled day of it. Vintage Market Days will be held at the Hill Country Youth Exhibition Center, November 11 through 13. Hill Country Rocks with “TOP” Music Artists
hese hills are gonna shake, rattle, and roll—throughout the day and night of legendary music, delicious food, and family fun—all proudly brought to you by Ken Stoepel Ford and Revolution Broadcasting’s The Rock of Texas KRVL 94.3 FM. This year’s Ken Stoepel Ford REVFEST 2 stars three celebrated headliners— Mark Farner (formerly of Grand Funk Railroad), The Outlaws, and Texas Tornados. Eight additional talented groups round out the music lineup for the Saturday, October 15 festival in Louise Hays Park.
Mark Farner Come to party “While we showcase a variety of musical styles, we are different than most other shows in the area in that we emphasize Classic Rock and Blues instead of offering yet another Country concert,” says Marlin Lee, REV FM Announcer and Ken Stoepel Ford REVFEST Promoter/Coordinator. Revolution Broadcasting General Manager Harley Belew adds, “The first Ken Stoepel Ford REVFEST was huge fun. So, we decided to do it again—even bigger. Last year Texas Tornados, The Stacks, and Adrian Conner blew folks away, so they’ll be back by popular demand for Ken Stoepel Ford REVFEST 2. “But the biggest name this year is Mark Farner—former front man for Grand Funk Railroad. For me, Mark Farner is Grand Funk. At the festival everyone will be singing along to hits like Closer to Home, Some Kind of Wonderful, We’re an American Band, and Locomotion. This is awesome—we’re bringing Mark “Grand Funk” Farner to Kerrville!”

Memorial cause
Ken Stoepel Ford REVFEST is held annually in memory of Marlin’s son, Marlin Lee III, who at the age of twenty-six passed away in 2012 from Ewing’s Sarcoma—an extremely deadly form of cancer that primarily afflicts children and young adults. “Last year we donated a portion of REVFEST net proceeds to MD Anderson Hospital,” reports Marlin. “This year we’ll donate funds to the newly formed nonprofit organization, Hill Country Help Corporation. We want to assist local families, particularly those with children or young adults battling cancer.”

Admission for children twelve and under is free. “Our first REVFEST drew a crowd of over a thousand people,” reports Marlin. “And with the continuing support of great sponsors and the public, we hope this grows into a multi-day festival that delivers ever-bigger-name musical talent with even more events for the whole family.” Harley concludes, “Ken Stoepel Ford REVFEST is a family event. Everyone is invited from Grandma to the little ones in strollers. We’re adding to our line-up of kids’ attractions, sponsors, vendors, food, drink, giveaways, and music. caterpillers?
So how do you know if it is a worm or a butterfly caterpillar? As a general rule it is by identifying the larvae. Most worms are laid by moths and are a general nuisance to many vegetable crops. Worms generally inch or crawl along plants, eating as they go. Most caterpillar larvae have legs with which they travel, and are usually identified with spines and stripes, and are usually evenly cylindrical. As with most butterfly species the larvae has a specific host plant they feed on. Some herb plants such as dill, fennel, rue, and parsley are great larval plants for Eastern swallowtails. Monarchs, however, are very host-specific—milkweed. The female will not lay its eggs on anything else. There is quite an assortment of milkweed plants that can be used to attract the female butterfly. Milkweed contains a toxin called cardiac glycosides. Monarchs and queens accumulate these toxins making

them distasteful to predators. Another host-specific plant is passion vine, and the Gulf Fritillary is all over it. The female butterfly lays her eggs on the leaves and the larvae can completely decimate the foliage in a few short days. Not to worry, the passion vine itself may look bad, but it will rapidly recover. So before you grab the B.T. (bacillus thuringiensis to kill the worms, make sure they are not butterfly larvae. Picking I your hair color to match the season by Katie Davis
n the summer, your skin is darker and your hair lighter. It’s the perfect pair for the summertime when the weather is hot and you are living a more laid-back life. However, this doesn’t last forever, and once the fall comes around, we are going to want to return to a more subdued hair style or color. The light colors don’t compliment your skin as well once your tan fades. This means that we should start thinking about switching up our hair for the new season. Dark colors tend to be warmer and compliment a winter complexion better. Be subtle when transitioning to darker hair—always stay within two shades of your natural hair color in order to achieve a flawless look.

We know that auburn is a great warm color for the cold months. It is sophisticated, yet adds a little flare to your look. Although this is a pretty universally flattering shade, you need to keep in mind your original hair color and skin tone when deciding on which auburn shade you should choose. For girls with brown hair, low-lighting your hair with a deep, rich auburn or burnt cherry colors will enhance the natural shine and depth of your hair. If you originally have blonde hair, you

That is a lot to take in when considering a new hair color. Another route that you can take is a new haircut. Longer bobs have been spotted on lots of celebrities lately. This cut is so sought after because it is manageable and gets rid of all those damaged ends. The bob styles look good on all face shapes and sizes.

It’s great that many of our seniors live independently—but what happens if they should fall, become ill or need assistance? The Dietert Center’s PAL is here to help, 24/7. Our PAL—Personal Alert Link—emergency response systems provide peace of mind for anyone living alone. The home systems consist of a small, waterproof help button that is worn around the neck or wrist. A press of the button summons an operator—any time of the day or night—who determines what assistance is needed. There’s also a home system whose button automatically activates when a fall occurs. We also offer the PAL MobileCare which works anywhere there is cell phone service. PRMC Volunteer Auxiliary
Spiritual health care PRMC has four Staff Chaplains available or on call 24/7, and eleven Volunteer Lay Chaplains who take pride in covering seven days a week. These Volunteers usually work four onehour shifts over one or two days, although hours worked depend on need. With warm smiles and cheerful demeanor, they greet all incoming patients (usually on their second day) to make them feel welcome. Many times “special needs can be addressed by a Volunteer Chaplain, who may not always be clergy, but most have backgrounds in counseling or other compassionate fields. They routinely go to waiting rooms and the ICU to visit with families, being available in any way they might be of assistance. Should help be needed, for instance, with forms such as Medical Powers of Attorney or Advance Directives, a Staff Chaplain can be called upon. The four Staff Chaplains are Jim Brown, Chris Christopherson, Matt Melton, and Tom Murray.

or many kids, parents, and teachers, back to school often means back to getting sick. We all know that schools are hotbeds for germs— according to the CDC, most elementary school children get eight to twelve colds or cases of the flu each school year. However, in addition to practicing good hygiene, there are other factors that can help defend against these germs. The oral cavity is home to billions of naturally-occurring bacteria, broken down into hundreds of different species. Many of these microorganisms serve as our first line of defense against illness and are key to maintaining good health. Streptococcus salivarius is one of the most abundant “good” bacteria found in the mouths of healthy people. Research has shown that keeping a healthy balance of bacteria in the mouth by promoting the presence of specific strains of good bacteria may be important for ear, nose, and throat health. Xymogen’s ProbioMax® ENT and ProbioMax® ENT for Kids uses an extremely safe, yet powerful strain known as S. salivarius ENT-12™. The ENT-12 strain has been shown to promote healthy levels of beneficial oral microorganisms and to support upper respiratory health. Early studies in children and adults have shown that supplementation with ENT-12 has a significant impact on throat, tonsil, and middle ear health.
Clinical trials have discovered an added benefit to the use of ENT-12. Certain bacteria on the tongue are known to break down proteins and cause volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) to be released, causing bad breath. Supplementation with ENT-12 allows good bacteria to compete with the sulfurproducing bacteria, substantially lowering the levels of VSC that are released. The result? Longerlasting, fresher breath! Annie’s Apothecary carries ProbioMax® ENT and ProbioMax® ENT for Kids. Give it a try, and don’t let germs get you down this back to school season!

Although Texas only had five percent of the nation’s population during World War II, Texans made up seven percent of the armed forces. The supreme allied commander in the Pacific, Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz, grew up in Fredericksburg and went to Tivy High School in Kerrville. General Dwight Eisenhower was born in Dennison and General Douglas MacArthur graduated from Texas Military Institute in San Antonio. Somewhere, I heard that Texas A&M has provided more generals for the U.S. Army than West Point.

exans have distinguished themselves on every field of battle since our own war for independence from Mexico. Although General Zachery Taylor abhorred the lack of discipline shown by the Texas Rangers during the U.S./Mexican war of 1846, he admitted the Texans were the best fighting men he had ever seen. During the Civil War, Robert E. Lee advised anyone who was unsure what to do in battle to “watch those Texans over there and do what they do.”
The most decorated soldier in the Army was Audie Murphy from Hunt County. The most decorated Navy officer was Commander Samuel Dealy from Dallas. Thirty-three Texans, including these two, received the Congressional Medal of Honor during World War II. All in all, Texas provided 750,000 men and women for the war effort and 22,000 Texans died in that war. For almost a hundred years, until June 22, 1942, when the United States Flag Code was adopted, Texas was the only state in the nation allowed to display the Lone Star Flag at equal height with the American Flag. It is written into the treaty we signed when we joined the Union. We love Texas and we love America and a lot of our young people have demonstrated a willingness to die for either of those flags

Young Texans trained for the battlefields of life on the gridiron. Long before Friday Night Lights made the nation aware of the football mania that engulfs Texas, high school football was an obsession here. Pimply faced kids learned courage, self-sacrifice, discipline, and teamwork on the footfall field. In tiny West Texas towns, oil-rich alums routinely imported outstanding players by giving jobs to their parents. These young athletes became local celebrities, worshipped by their neighbors . . . and by their neighbors’ daughters. For decades, Texas high schools provided the bulk of athletes to the old Southwest Conference. That conference is now history and college football is national in scope, so we supply campuses around the country with talented, disciplined, well-conditioned troops. Recent national champion Oklahoma always has more Texans on the roster than natives of Oklahoma. All these military and athletic accomplishments contribute to the vast pride that Texans feel in their homeland and in themselves. In my particular homeland, the high plains of the Texas Panhandle, most days the air is crystal clear and the sun so bright it hurts your eyes. The wind blows constantly, multiplying the effects of heat or cold. In summer, 100-degree days are not uncommon and, in winter, a “Blue Norther” can drop the temperature fifty degrees in a few hours. Droughts sometimes last several years, yet the average annual rainfall has been known to come in four days. People who live here learn to cope with the weather. We learn to adjust to our climate, for it will not adjust to us. We brag to outsiders about brutal weather, fickle rainfall, and cruel winds.

We take pride in overcoming hardship and we find value in simple things, like new socks. We harness a deeply held, burning ambition to improve ourselves and our positions in life. My friend and classmate, Frank Williamson, was born into soul-crushing poverty on a dirt farm outside Morton, Texas. He may have said it best: “When you come from where I did, you would just about rather die than fail.” I know some outsiders will think I’m bragging, and I hate that. Anyone who knows the first thing about Texans knows we’re just as humble as all get out. Jim was born in Lubbock County, Texas in 1936 and now resides in Kerrville. As a proud fifth-generation Texan, Jim studies and writes about Texas history, with a bit of humor thrown in. Visit Jim’s blog: StateofLubbock.Blogspot.com

We who live in Texas are richly rewarded for our tenacity. Achingly beautiful sunsets promise a new and better tomorrow. We share a never-changing, ever-changing sky with each other and anyone else aware enough to notice. We breathe the fresh, clean air and squint

Looking for natural pain management?
Pain. We all deal with it at some point in our lives and for an
estimated 100 million Americans, pain is chronic. It robs us of our vitality and our capacity to participate fully in life. Medications and surgery may help in some cases, but they come with considerable side effects and risks. Let’s look at a natural approach to pain relief—Reiki is a handson, non-invasive therapy that catalyzes your body’s organic ability to heal itself. This integrative healing technique makes Reiki the perfect complement for traditional medical practices. Reiki often reduces the amount of necessary drug therapy and speeds the recovery time for required surgeries—all the while, assisting pain relief by natural means. After a session you feel relaxed, refreshed, and better able to cope with your condition. Experience Reiki for yourself and find out why over sixty hospitals and clinics in the U.S. utilize Reiki in their patient programs.
