uffled dresses, extravagant hair bows, and feathered tiaras. Cleverly printed t-shirts and stylish shorts. Engaging books and vintage toys. You’ll find them all and more at this gem of a kids’ boutique set in downtown Kerrville on our Historic District’s wonderful Water Street. “I wouldn’t have us any other place,” claims LulaBelle’s Pirates & Pretties founder and owner Lucy Sandidge Pearson. “I love how it feels to walk down the street and see friendly people and each building coming to life—LulaBelle’s is proud to be a part of that success story.” A faithful breath of fresh air in downtown Kerrville, the children’s specialty shop draws a band of loyal shoppers who know they can find unique clothing and gifts right here at home.
Making an entrance
LulaBelle’s first Kerr County People cover story caused quite a stir. It featured the four remarkable women from one Kerrville family—Lucy and her daughters Heather Stebbins, Emily McRae, and Jennifer Imel—who collectively shepherded the shop into existence in May, 2015. Lucy says, “When our story appeared in the magazine last fall, we constantly had people coming in and saying ‘We want to meet you and your daughters.’” Then these enchanting rendezvous at LulaBelle’s would spontaneously shift into delighted discovery mode—with plenty of “ooohs,” “ahhhs,” and “come look at this!”
Jennifer’s smiling face greets customers.
“We know that people come here to shop for things they can’t find anywhere else around,” continues Emily. The extensive inventory of well-known and loved brands in children’s fashion is enticing. The charming boutique encourages a hands-on approach to shopping for all the latest in kids’ clothing—with sizes from newborns to girls’ 6X and boys’ 6/7. Fortunately, six of Lucy’s eight grandchildren are still young enough to be happy little models around town in their LulaBelle’s collection of eyecatching styles.

Tons of fun
Store Manager Jennifer reveals, “We’ve expanded our selection of amazing toys, books, and gifts. Adults and kids love our new vintage toys—marbles, jacks, pick-up sticks, tiddlywinks. And even slap watches (popular in the ‘80s) have made a comeback.” “It’s fun to see things come back around,” comments Heather. “As well as current kid favorites, LulaBelle’s carries things from my sisters’ and my childhoods, and from our mom’s generation too.” Kids of all ages will want to indulge in play with 2 Bros Bows—kid-friendly nostalgic bows and arrows—the brain-child of two young entrepreneur brothers. These whimsical handcrafted bows, arrows, and quiver bags promote exploring nature with an adventurous flair. Adults in the know will recognize LulaBelle’s other highquality toy brands—Zubels, Green Toys, Hape, Plan Toys, Djeco, and Usborne books. And they’ll appreciate the fact that some of the toys are considered green—made with recycled or sustainable materials. “We try to buy from suppliers concerned about the environment,” confirms Lucy. “We genuinely care about others—we buy from, and sell to people that care as much as we do,” Emily adds. Jennifer reads from a tag on a pair of sparkly shoes from Native—“beast-free, shock absorbent, lightweight, odor resistant”—and Heather can’t help remarking, “Shoes with a sense of humor.” Yes, indeed, happiness does still live here. continue to page 15

Helping pets find their way home with
By Anne Schneider
If you’ve ever lost a pet, you know the fear it strikes in your heart. You roam the streets on foot, shouting your pet’s name. You visit the animal shelters; knock on neighborhood doors; you make posters and stake them on street corners; you call friends to help you search; you post notices in the newspaper. But did you know there’s another option that can reach thousands of area people in just minutes and it’s free? The tool to use Kerrville Lost and Found Pets is a Facebook page created to reunite pets and their owners and is a great tool to use if you’ve lost or found an animal in the Kerr County vicinity. Started by Judith Glaze Miller after a lost dog showed up at her home in 2010, this FB page has seen immense growth and participation by Kerr County residents. She recruited three petloving friends throughout the past seven years to help with administration duties. Their full-time dedication to the cause and their love of animals has paid off in many happy endings for people in our community. The reward for such dedication is the joy of seeing so many beloved pets stay out of the kill shelters and returned home safely to their families. One of the page’s admins shared that after his dog went missing his family went into a frenzy—it was like losing a family member. His beloved dog was soon found and returned home through the use of this FB page. He then realized how valuable social media can be for lost and found pets. 16 | SEPT-OCT 2017 | KERR COUNTY PEOPLE MAGAZINE
How it works As of this writing, Kerrville Lost and Found Pets has over 3300 likes and in excess of 3200 followers, with many posts reaching over 4,000 people. The more likes and shares, the more exposure these lost and found pets get and the better the chance these little ones have to get back home. And it’s not just for dogs and cats—they’ve had posts for parrots, horses, tortoises, and even a couple of bunnies. Want to post info on Kerrville Lost and Found Pets for your missing pet or one you’ve found? Just go to the Facebook link below and click on the “posts” section, add the pet’s photo and as much information as possible, and that’s it. You can even do it from your cell phone’s Facebook app. Happy endings According to Judith, the success of this Facebook page is attributed to the great group of admins as well as our wonderful community of pet lovers who have been so caring and diligent in sharing to help area pets get back home to their families. That’s the happy ending and joy we want for everyone and their pets. Take an active role and join area pet lovers in these happy endings by visiting Facebook today. “Like” and “Follow” Kerrville Lost and Found Pets—then be sure to “Share” all the posts with your FB friends—let’s get the word out and help these much-loved pets return home, safe and sound! https:// www.facebook.com/kerrvillelostandfoundpets/ Advice from the Admins: Never Give Up! Many pets are found miles from home after days, months and even years, and many times due to only a microchip. It’s a very inexpensive, valuable way to give you peace of mind if they ever stray from home and possibly end up in an area kill shelter. Things happen unexpectedly and pets run—terrifying storms, fireworks, someone accidentally leaves the gate or door open—and your beloved pet is missing. You just never know what tomorrow may bring, so please microchip your pets.

hildren are innately curious about the world around them. So, even basic household items like window fashions can turn into potential hazards for them.
October is Window Coverings Safety Month! Making window fashions safer for homes with infants, young children, and pets is top priority. There is a wide range of products available to help significantly reduce accident risks by eliminating potentially hazardous free-hanging or exposed operating cords. Older window coverings may not meet the latest national standard for window cord safety. If possible, use only noncorded window coverings where infants and young children are present. If you have corded window coverings and can’t replace them with today’s safer products, check for the following hazards: Move all cribs, beds, furniture and toys away from windows and window cords, preferably to another wall. Keep all window cords well out of the reach of children. Eliminate any dangling cords. Make sure that tasseled pull cords are as short as possible.
Esteban Apodaca
Check that cord stops are properly installed and adjusted to limit the movement of inner lift cords. This is the most overlooked detail in window covering safety. Continuous-loop cords on draperies and vertical blinds should be permanently anchored to the floor or wall.

Seasonally Savvy Feeding
by Kevin & Linda Pillow
2017 Kerrville Outdoor Painters Event
October 4
Any day is a great day to start feeding the birds. Depending on the time of year, your results may vary. This is because everything in the bird world revolves around migration and weather patterns. Being in tune with this will help you decide when to put out certain foods. Our first summer migrants arriving in February are the purple martins. This is the start of nesting season—a great time to start feeding. Your food offerings should change to include foods with added calcium and a higher percentage of protein throughout nesting season. You will start serving nectar for the hummingbirds, and oranges and grape jelly for the Orioles. In August, when the goldfinches ramp up their nesting season, Nyjer is a must! Putting out the correct foods will bring a wider variety of birds to your backyard feeding station all the way through September! October and November, during fall migration, is when we typically see a drop in activity at the feeders. This is due to the fact that the birds are truly empty nesters and the increased production of natural food. Birds will always go to natural food first. The previous spring’s weather directly affects the bird activity in the fall. Rain in the spring brings a plethora of natural food. With drought conditions, like in 2013, the birds have no natural food and will continue to feed heavily at your feeders. It’s a great time to serve peanuts in the shell for them to cache for the winter.

Help safeguard the people and possessions that matter most
by Amber Thomason
Build a Triangle of Protection® Around Your Home and Family How would you and your family cope financially if you became ill or injured and couldn’t work, if your home were seriously damaged, or if you died unexpectedly? If you’re not sure where the money would come from, we can help you identify the protection you may need to help keep your family and home secure. Your State Farm™ agent can put together a triangle of protection for you — life, disability income, and homeowner insurance.
A Triangle of Protection, A Reasonable Solution
Your homeowner’s insurance policy is a great first step toward protecting your home and possessions. But it’s only one part of your financial picture. Too many people lose their homes because they don’t have insurance coverage that provides funds in case of death or disability. We can help you establish a triangle of protection that includes: • Life insurance, which may be used to help pay off your mortgage and keep your family in your home if you die prematurely
• Disability income insurance, which may help you make mortgage payments if you’re unable to work due to a covered disability • Homeowners insurance, which offers protection for damage to your home, the roof over your head, and your belongings inside
Do you have enough life insurance? Ask yourself how much your family will need after your death to meet immediate expenses — and then how much they’ll need long-term to maintain their standard of living.
Are You Covered for a Disabling Injury or Illness?
Many people underestimate the risks of becoming disabled, and aren’t prepared financially for the months or years it may take to recover. In fact, 1 in 5 Americans live with a disability, and 1 in 10 Americans live with a severe disability. If you stopped earning an income because of an injury or illness, could you pay your mortgage? Amber Thomason and her staff have over 15 years of insurance and financial service experience and would love the opportunity to earn your business. Come home to a local agent that is dedicated to the life and needs of her customers. 315 W. Main, Kerrville. 830-315-5433.

YAKers By Anne Schneider
Rolling on the River.
KrAzyYAKers
“Our kayaking is a way for women of all ages to stay healthy and to enjoy and explore the natural Hill Country and river together.”
Today’s adventure
includes twenty women, laughing and chatting as they climb aboard the colorful kayaks. With their ages ranging from the 40s to the 80s, these women all have one thing in common—they’re fun-loving. And once a month from April to October, they paddle the sparkling waters of the Guadalupe River to celebrate as a community.
Hunt Garden Club President Karen Taylor says, “We call ourselves the KrAzy YAKers and the group began as a wellness activity for the members of the Hunt Garden Club. We started kayaking in the spring of 2015, with about twenty members— our contact list of interested ladies has grown to forty-five.”
Watercolor paintings shared by YAKers founder Janet Reinwald.
Fun seeking nature lovers
The KrAzy YAKers meet at the Hunt Store in March to set their calendar to kayak for the next seven months on the third Thursday each month. Members of the Hunt Garden Club volunteer to host the scheduled kayak outings at their different access points along the scenic Guadalupe River in Hunt, Ingram, and Kerrville. Most outings start at 10 a.m., ending with a picnic lunch of shared treats. The exception is the October outing, hosted by members who live in Guadalupe Ranch Estates. That excursion begins later in the day and ends with cocktails and appetizers. No doubt about it—these women create merriment wherever they go. This summer day’s kayaking adventure hosts are Bernadell Larson and husband Stuart Thompson. Their sloping grassy riverfront with terraced stone patios under the shade of spreading live oaks and pecans provides the picture-perfect setting for the day’s festivities. Women of all ages pitch in to help each other unload kayaks from their vehicles and take them down to the river. Old friends play catch-up, newcomers receive warm welcomes. They all help each other ease into the kayaks, handing off paddles and water bottles as they go. Sunscreened and behatted, the women push off into a brisk breeze and lots of laughter. Kathy Freeman, the lone member on a standingpaddleboard, ably maneuvers among them. Up and down the river, small groups of kayakers cluster for conversations and then dissolve to form new constellations in a fluid dance of fun.

“Everyone pitches in to make sure that all women can participate…this sets a beautiful model for the ways women are willing to join in sisterhood.”
A kaleidoscope of members
“These outings helped me learn the best places to kayak and to swim,” shares Hunt Garden Club member and KrAzy YAKer Val Ostarch. She moved to the area several years ago with husband Steve Salinger from their long-time home in Kansas City. “I had no other way to learn all this—the group has meant everything to me, helping me adjust to my new life in the Hill Country.” Janet Reinwald, Hunt Garden Club member and founder of the KrAzy YAKers adds, “I’m a kayaker and like to go every month to see different parts of the river. As a watercolorist, I’m inspired by the beautiful colors and symmetry of the kayaks. I’ve painted two watercolors of them—so colorful and fun.” Not all the kayakers are from around here—but claim they got here as fast as they could. They’ve made their homes in our beloved Texas Hill Country from places as far away as Michigan,
Vermont, and New Jersey, and as close by as San Antonio, Houston, and East Texas. “And we gladly welcome new members to both the KrAzy YAKers and the Hunt Garden Club,” concludes Karen. Take the plunge and become a KrAzy YAKer! And while you’re at it, check out the Hunt Garden Club—federated in 1953, the HGC hosts informative program presentations and its expanded scope includes participation in a variety of community projects. Reaching Out
T
hey come in all ages—as young as one month old. Besides their fear and pain, there is little they can call their own. In just the past seven years, almost 1500 children from the Hill Country’s five-county area have been aided—that’s about 225 kids a year. Their stories are heartbreaking and too often, chilling.
Hill Country Crisis Council Executive Director Brent Ives and Development Director Suzanne Tomerlin.
28 | SEPT-OCT 2017 | KERR COUNTY PEOPLE MAGAZINE
Hill Country Crisis Council Executive Director Brent Ives says, “We offer housing, counseling and legal advocacy to victims of domestic violence and child abuse—free of charge—serving families from Kerr, Bandera, Gillespie, Kendall, and Kimble Counties.” Recently known as Hill Country Cares and now back to its original name, the Hill Country Crisis Council (HCCC) has worked for thirty-three years to facilitate relief and support for victimized families.
In Safety And Service the Hill Country Crisis Council is here to help Helping those in crisis and beyond
HCCC Development Director Suzanne Tomerlin notes, “We work directly with victims, far beyond their initial crisis. Through counseling and coordinating local resources we get them the help they need—emergency shelter, a 24-hour hotline, clothing, and food. We seek out those suffering from trauma and give them what they need to recover from what they’ve experienced.” Nancy is widowed, the grateful greatgrandmother of three great-granddaughters. She makes her home in Junction on several acres along the river. Two of her greatgranddaughters, ages ten and eight, live with her and attend a local school. They love being outdoors and helping their Nana tend the property’s fifty pecan trees. Their lives were not always so idyllic.
“She has counseled the girls every week for two years. If not for KAP and Amanda knowing how to allow the kids to tell their story and to prepare them so well for the legal proceedings, their stepfather would still be out there molesting young children.” Less than a year after his arrest, the husband of Nancy’s granddaughter was sentenced to thirty years in prison for sexual abuse of the children. Tragically, after assurances that the perpetrator was in prison, Nancy’s seriously ill husband committed suicide. Nancy continues, “HCCC stepped in again and got us through that terrible time. God sent us the most amazing people—it takes a whole team to support a family through a crisis. Two years later, the girls and I continue to go back for counseling.
Their stories are heartbreaking “The coping skills we’ve learned through HCCC have been astounding. And we’ve gone beyond In April 2015, already a full-time caregiver and too often, just coping. We’re actually happy now—that for her sick husband, Nancy journeyed to never could have happened without this Oklahoma to pick up her two oldest greatvaluable community resource.” chilling. granddaughters, then eight and six years old. Their mother, Nancy’s granddaughter, was mired in drug use and unpaid bills—her family living in filth with the water turned off to their home.
“My granddaughter no longer wanted to keep her first two children but insisted on leaving town with her two-year-old baby, the child of her current husband. So I took the two oldest girls and a few days later while I was bathing them, they made an outcry of sexual abuse. They said that they twice had told their mother of the abuse by their stepfather, but she defended him and told her small daughters ‘never to tell anyone else, especially Nana.”
Kids’ Advocacy Place
In September 2009, Kids’ Advocacy Place (KAP) merged with Hill Country Crisis Council. These two great nonprofit agencies work together to assist families and children in crisis. Before becoming HCCC’s Executive Director, Brent worked for seven years as KAP Program Director. “KAP is a safe, child-friendly place where abused children can tell their stories to district attorneys, law enforcement investigators, and child protective agencies during the initial stages of a child abuse investigation,” shares Brent.
Nancy immediately reached out to long-time child advocate and previous County Assistant District Attorney Donnie Coleman. Donnie instigated actions in both Oklahoma and Texas to safely place the baby in foster care and to arrest her father.
“These children also receive guidance and specialized medical and therapeutic services that begin their recovery process from the physical, emotional, and psychological trauma that can sometimes be caused by abuse.”
“I didn’t have a clue what to do next,” explains Nancy, “but Donnie directed me to Kids’ Advocacy Place through the Hill Country Crisis Council in Kerrville. Before counseling services, they had forensic interviews at KAP and then I accompanied them to the hospital. HCCC therapist Amanda Calderon was an angel from God.
According to Brent, HCCC is one of only three organizations in Texas that is as comprehensive—due to the fact that it has the child advocacy center KAP, as well as advocacy and counseling across five counties, and a shelter. Normally, child advocacy centers stand alone and shelters stand alone. continue to next page

“We educate and train teachers, law enforcement, and the community on spotting and reporting abuse and on how not to become a victim.” Educating the community
Focusing on prevention in addition to intervention, HCCC gets the word into our community on the warning signs of domestic violence and child abuse. An important component of HCCC’s educational outreach includes its prevention programs with experts who connect with approximately 6,000 Hill Country students. The students learn about issues of body safety in elementary schools, bullying prevention at the junior high level, and sexual assault, dating violence, and suicide at the high school level. Brent adds, “We educate and train teachers, law enforcement, and the community on spotting and reporting abuse and on how not to become a victim.” (See sidebar for warning signs of an abusive relationship.)
How you can help
Plan to attend the September 27, show-stopper evening “Moonlight Over Hollywood”—HCCC’s 14th Annual Women 2 Women fundraising event. WE ARE HERE TO HELP Returning as the dynamic speaker for this year’s fundraiser, is Lara Logan from Durbin, South Africa and now living in Fredericksburg. Lara is the award-winning chief foreign affairs correspondent for CBS News, as well as a correspondent for the CBS program 60 Minutes. In 2011, on assignment in Cairo for the celebration following the resignation of Egypt’s President Mubarak, Lara survived a horrific mass sexual assault in Tahir Square. The brutal attack could have rendered her isolated in fear and silence. But Lara chooses to continue to share her powerful story, breaking the silence about the sexual violence that women around the world suffer. Suzanne concludes, “We’re proud to have Lara return for our annual fundraising event—helping us raise community awareness of HCCC services and contribute to the fight to give every human what they deserve—a life free from violence and fear.” If you are a victim of domestic violence or sexual assault, HCCC wants to help you. Its services to victims and their children are free of charge. Is it the second spring or the first of winter? Autumn in Texas can be a little of both and the cool fronts a welcome change. by Trena Cullins
Aspiring Autumn H
Now’s the time to get those cool weather crops planted. Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, spinach, lettuce, beets, kale, Brussel sprouts, and collards. Plus my all-time favorite— carrots. Autumn is also the time to sow wildflower seeds—a very easy process. Simply rough up the soil, scatter seed, and water. If you’d like daffodils, irises, and other bulbs blooming in the spring, now’s the time for planting. Dig a hole twice the depth of the bulb, fertilize, and plant your bulbs. Next spring you’ll be beautifully rewarded. Other reasons for this aspiring season are pansies, snapdragons, dianthus,
and ornamental cabbage. Remember, these gorgeous bloomers go right through winter and show off in the spring. For a green winter lawn, it’s time to start planting rye grass seed. It will grow through the winter and die out with next year’s heat. If you’re looking for nematode control, plant cereal rye now. Soon pumpkins will adorn yards, autumn leaves will be falling, and the smell of evening fires will fill the air. Though a trauma to both body and mind, surgery is sometimes necessary. Did you know a body under stress is slower to heal? That’s why it’s important to go into surgery as well rested and calm as possible—an understandably daunting challenge. For both pre-op and post-op, many doctors are recommending Reiki to their patients. Reiki can reduce stress, decrease the need for pain medication, improve sleep and appetite, and accelerate the healing process. Additionally, it may reduce many unwanted side effects of radiation and drugs, including chemotherapy. All this makes Reiki an excellent complimentary therapy— supporting both your physical and emotional wellness, naturally. It can help relieve those pre-surgery jitters as well as the post-surgery blues. This non-invasive, nonmanipulative technique is enjoyed worldwide—with over sixty hospitals and clinics in the US currently using Reiki in their patient services. Anne Schneider is a Kerrville Reiki Master with eleven years of experience. Support your wellness—especially if preparing for surgery or recovery from one—and schedule your Reiki session with Anne at her Ventana Al Cielo Studio, The Center for Fitness, or Peak Fitness. Contact her today at Anne@ReikiTexas.info or (830)739-5828. Visit her website at ReikiTexas.info.
Interested in learning Reiki to help get ready for and heal from your own surgery or that of a loved one?
