COVER STORY By Kathleen Cook

Texas Arts Celebration of the

Arts in Texas Against a backdrop of the beautiful Guadalupe River, on the campus of the Hill Country Arts Foundation in Ingram, Texas, more than 5,000 attendees are expected to visit the Texas Arts & Crafts Fair the weekend of Sept. 29–30. This one-of-a-kind art festival is the Official State Arts & Crafts Fair of Texas.

Madelyn Eddy

The 42nd Texas Arts & Crafts Fair is a celebration of all things handcrafted exclusively by Texas artists. Be Inspired. Be excited. Be transformed by the unique offerings of professional artists from all over the state, who will gather on the campus of the Hill Country Arts Foundation to share their artistry with visitors.

& Crafts Fair

Exhibiting Artists From Across Texas

Sept 29-30 The first arts and crafts fair was held over Memorial Day weekend in 1972, and designated as the Official State Arts & Crafts Fair by the Texas Legislature. For thirty years, the fair was held on the Schreiner University campus. In 2004, the fair moved, leasing a seven-acre site from Kerr County. The Texas Arts & Crafts Fair brings together, in a delightful way, those who make art and those who want to see and purchase the results of that creative process. Art careers have started at this fair and longtime friendships between artists and collectors have been established as well. It isn’t unusual for visitors to return year after year to see what their favorite artists are currently producing. Plus it is always exciting to discover a new treasure, a one-of-a-kind “must have” that is only available during fair weekend.

The Texas Arts & Crafts Fair celebrates Texas artists Many artists have built their careers through their participation in the Texas Arts & Crafts Fair over the years. Watercolor artists Edith Maskey and her husband John, of Comfort, Texas, were part of the first fairs. Their masterful images are now highly collected and sought after. Both Edith and John agree, “The Fair is a wonderful showcase for aspiring artists and craftsmen and full of possibilities to offer new ways of expression and the opportunity to develop our talents. It gives us the freedom to pursue making a living doing what we love.” The Maskeys are 2018 “Heritage Artists” and will be showing in the HCAF indoor gallery. Daryl Howard of Austin, also a Heritage Artist, is a master woodblock print artist in the Japanese tradition. She was a popular exhibitor at the Fair, returning every year with new and exciting examples of her recent explorations. “The Texas State Arts & Crafts Fair is truly the beginning of my full time career as a fine artist,” expresses Daryl. “The clients that I met there, and now their families, have continued to be an important part of my life. People came from all over the state to experience this Hill Country event. It represented the best of fine art as well as fine craft and it was a real honor to be part of the event.”

DeDiCatioN Perfect Pairing: HCAF is now the permanent home of the Texas Arts & Crafts Fair The Hill Country Arts Foundation is deeply committed to providing our community with high-quality visual and theater arts. Since its humble beginnings in 1959, as a cluster of modest teaching studios, art gallery, and outdoor theater, the HCAF has grown into a vibrant arts facility, well respected for its classes, gallery displays, and professional-level community theater performances. In 2013, with the acquisition of The Texas Arts & Crafts Fair name and the generous financial support of major donors, the HCAF moved forward with site improvements that would accommodate and promote an event of the Fair’s magnitude. This fall, when visitors come from far away to attend the Fair, they will get to see and experience all that the HCAF has to offer—its programs, facilities, location, and possibilities. They’ll come away with a desire to return and to tell their friends what a wonderful time they had in our beloved Hill Country. As the only facility of its kind in the region, the Hill Country Arts Foundation stands out as a vital cultural resource. Now thousands of people, who come to the Fair, will discover what we who live here have known all along.

“The 2018 fair is dedicated to Jim Avery, founder of James Avery Artisan Jewelry. Jim, who died in April, was a board member and longtime supporter of both the Texas Arts and Crafts Fair and the Hill Country Arts Foundation. “Jim was a friend and mentor— he nominated me to the Fair board back in the 80s. The last time I visited him, I told him about our plans and he was so happy to know the Fair was being revived.” Wanda Garner Cash, TACF Event Director

14 | SEPT-OCT 2018 | KERR COUNTY PEOPLE MAGAZINE

On the cover Who’s behind the scenes getting it done? No event of this magnitude just happens by accident. It takes a team of caring, dedicated people to perform all the hundreds of little tasks that make the Fair seem to be an “effortless” event. But no team is effective unless guided by someone with a vision. That someone is Wanda Garner Cash. Wanda, a longtime Hunt resident who retired as a professor of journalism at the University of Texas after ten years, says, “I spent a couple of years on the porch looking at nature and reading a lot of books. That got old pretty fast.” Soon, she wanted to do more with her gifts of organization, bringing people together, and championing a cause. When an ad appeared in the local paper for an event coordinator at HCAF, she called and learned it was about the Fair. Since last August, Wanda has been all-in, systematically building a fabulous support network and a team of volunteers who take care of every detail. Wanda’s best attribute, in preparing for the Fair, has been fundraising. A feather in her cap is the acquisition of major media sponsor Texas Monthly Magazine. Because of that partnership, the Texas Arts & Crafts Fair has reached a much wider audience. The Fair also acquired James Avery Artisan Jewelers and the Hal and Charlie Peterson Foundation as major sponsors. Many more community organizations have stepped up with their continued on next page support too.

What is art and why does it matter?

Julie & Dwyre-Zuckerman

The human soul has a desire to create—to build, to form, to shape, to make a mark—and to communicate to other souls what it means to be alive. When a child scribbles her first image of a house and a tree, that drawing is just as satisfying and magical to her as what a master artist feels producing a painting of sublime beauty. The joy comes from doing it. The crudest materials—clay, wood, wax, paint, chalk, metal, fiber, glass—gain higher meaning when ignited by the divine spark of creativity and imagination. We call the result art. Those who have a unique way of seeing and an unexplained determination to spend a lifetime making things are called artists. But the process isn’t complete until the results are seen and enjoyed—by you.

CBD Oil: Fact over Fiction by Sabrina Griggs, RPH

CBD (cannabidiol) oil has become an increasingly

popular topic in modern healthcare. Although CBD is derived from agricultural hemp, a close relative to marijuana, it contains no THC, which is the psychotropic component of marijuana.

CBD has been found to be beneficial for sleep, focus, anxiety-related disorders, pain, and inflammation. Patients are also seeing improvement in Crohn's disease, Type 1 diabetes, and various skin conditions. Additionally, parents are finding CBD useful in treating children with autism, ADD, and ADHD. CBD use also aids smoking cessation, drug withdrawal, and eating disorders. Studies are underway for treatment of cancer and Alzheimer's with CBD. Our bodies have an endocannabinoid system that actually produces CBDs. But, as a result of aging, illness, or injury, our ability to produce these important compounds becomes impaired. Supplemental CBD is absorbed by the body's receptors only where a deficit exists, making it a true targeted therapy. Dosing is highly individualized, based on the physiology of the patient and severity of symptoms. CBD may be consumed by various methods: vaping, sublingual drops or sprays, gel caps, and topical creams and ointments. Each form is appropriate for various conditions. Pet-specific CBD therapies are also available in several strengths of oral drops and flavored treats. Consumers should beware of products labeled “hemp oil,” as these may contain little or no CBD. At Apothecary Shoppe, we carry a variety of CBD products from several top-quality manufacturers. All are verified source from seed to shelf and certificates of analysis are available for every product. In addition, we offer educated advice on the proper use from a trusted medical professional and educated staff members. Come by and consult with one of our staff about which CBD products would be a good fit for you and your symptoms. Sabrina Griggs, RPH, has thirty years of broad-spectrum pharmaceutical and nutritional healthcare knowledge. She is the owner/pharmacist at Apothecary Shoppe, 1228 Bandera Hwy, Kerrville. 830-257-0732. 18 | SEPT-OCT 2018 | KERR COUNTY PEOPLE MAGAZINE

Community Art Lending Program

Winter season submissions needed!

Peterson Health is looking for area artists and photographers interested in showcasing their work at the Ambulatory Care Center on Cully Drive inside Peterson’s Outpatient Rehabilitation Department. Artwork is displayed down the main hallway from the reception area toward the rehabilitation gym, which is one most heavily trafficked hallways in the facility. Artists interested in submitting art for consideration should submit photos of available framed pieces no later than October 24. Lisa Winters, Director of Marketing and Community Relations shares, “The Community Art Lending Program has been such a special program and I’m continually amazed by the talent and generosity of our area artists. They share their best work with us every quarter and you cannot imagine what a difference it makes to the patients, physicians, caregivers, and staff to see forty-sixty new photos or paintings rotate throughout the space every three months. What started out as a department idea on a modest scale has now become one of the most successful art programs in the region and gained the attention of other hospitals and healthcare organizations.” If you’re a local artist or photographer and would like to participate this quarter, simply email photos of available pieces to Lisa Winters at LWinters@PetersonRMC.com or call 830-258-7628.

Discipline from the beginning by Lainie Johnson

The Parenting Resource Center

D

iscipline is not punishment, it is teaching. Discipline begins the moment you bring your baby home from the hospital. It begins with teaching your child routines, such as a regular feeding schedule and a predictable bedtime. Children learn from their parents. If they see you function in routines, as pertains to them, they will naturally grow to follow those routines and feel most comfortable when abiding in those routines. Until babies are about nine-months-old, they are unable to have any concept of right or wrong, and they cannot manipulate you. Babies younger than nine-months are unable to reason, “If I cry, she will pick me up, so I am going to cry.” When they are that young, they cry because they have a need. So holding them too much or picking them up when they cry will not “spoil” them. But, when your child is seven-to-nine-months-old, it is time to start setting limits and encouraging the right behaviors. Routines and establishing predictable patterns for your child will give her a sense of security. 20 | SEPT-OCT 2018 | KERR COUNTY PEOPLE MAGAZINE

After you have established some predictable routines with feeding and bedtime, when your child is about nine-monthsold, you can start telling him “no” when he is doing something that you don’t consider appropriate. His age will limit what you can expect of him so be sure to consider what he is capable of understanding. No matter how many times you may have told him not to do something, do not ever yell at or hit your child. Be firm when you say “no,” but do not raise your voice. You are not trying to scare him; you are trying to teach him. One of the common things that babies like to do is pull mom’s earrings. Just firmly say “no” and move him to where he cannot reach the earrings. Remember, he does not know that pulling your earrings is wrong, he is just curious. It is a normal behavior for a child around nine-months to want to investigate that dangling, sparkly, attractive object. It is your job to lovingly set the limits of what he can touch. Lainie Johnson is the Executive Director of The Parenting Resource Center. To learn more, visit TheParentingResourceCenter.org. The Center offers free parenting classes on a personalized and confidential basis to address whatever concerns you may have about your child from conception to age twelve.

BACKYA R D BI R D I N G

Let’s talk

Martin mania

by Kevin & Linda Pillow

W

hy are we talking about purple martins in autumn? Because this is the best time of year to install a martin house! These delightful birds with their musical burble are always a welcome sight come February. A colony of martins’ chatter will keep you entertained from dawn till dusk. Purple martins are migratory because they eat only flying insects, so they must go where the food is. Martins winter in South America—primarily the Amazon Basin, Brazil, and Bolivia—a mighty long trek for a backyard bird. In fact, there have been studies in which geo-locators were attached to martins, revealing how they migrate. One traveled 600 miles in one day and another traveled 5,000 miles in a three-week period. Once they find a reliable site for nesting, they generally return to the same site year after year. Returning to a site that offers everything they need to raise a successful brood has obvious benefits. There are basically two types of martin housing—conventional housing with compartments or gourd style. Most new landlords start by purchasing a house, then once the colony progresses over the years, they tend to add a gourd system. There are some useful guidelines when choosing your martin site. They prefer to be close to humans, so they like to be within 100 feet of your house and ideally have an open area no less than forty to fifty feet square. They need an open area to afford a flight path from any one direction. Following these specifics will increase your chances of attracting martins to your site. As a landlord you need to do regular nest checks, so choose a house or gourd system that you can easily maneuver up and down. Installing a house now will mean you are ready to go when they return!

Happy Birding! Kevin & Linda Pillow are the proud owners of Wilds Birds Unlimited Nature Shop located at 855 Junction Hwy in Kerrville. BELLA LUZ MD

age management by Bella

As

we age we see changes first in our faces, necks, and hands. We lose elasticity and volume in both tissue and bone. We have to trick Mother Nature into slowing down this process. I call this Age Management, and many different approaches can address this situation. First, using topical products on the skin can help restore collagen in the dermis. Growth hormones, hydrators, and retinols can retard the process of aging by providing the nutrition your skin needs as it ages.

Not all skin care products are created equal, however. I believe in using products that scientific studies have proven to be effective. This is the reason I sell Skin Medica®. Every product in the line is backed by many clinical studies that prove its positive results. Second, neuromodulators such as Botox® or Xeomin® limit the hyperexpressive movement of muscles. I’m not into the “frozen face”––we need to have expression. But reducing hypermovement and the lines that result can give your face and neck a more youthful appearance.

Third, bone and tissue volume loss can’t be treated with topicals and neuromodulators alone. Therefore at Bella Luz we introduce fillers and threads. Fillers can replace volume and give your face the fuller, smoother, healthier glow you had years ago. Threads, used with fillers can give a lift to skin that’s started to sag. Combinations of these treatments can visibly take five to seven years off your appearance. Aesthetic practice is an art as much as science. It takes a keen eye and an artist’s hand to create a work of beauty. I have performed thousands of treatments since opening Bella Luz in 2006. Everyone is unique and has different desires. Together, you and I can discuss your age management goals and come up with a care plan designed just for you. Come see me and let’s talk about how I can help freshen your appearance. All you have to lose are a few wrinkles. It’s free and there’s no pressure, just good information to help you get back that beautiful glow.

A look at the book The three sections featured in Prayers of My Heart allow you to select the journaling style that best fits your personality. Beth Moore of Living Proof Ministries endorses Debbie’s new book and particularly likes the Week at a Glance section.

An invitation from the author “Spending five minutes at the beginning or end of our day recording our thanks to Jesus for who He is and how He’s answering our prayers both renews our mind and builds our faith. With a small investment of our time, we gain a huge benefit.” Debbie concludes, “We can be known for our gratitude rather than bad attitude. All Christians are invited to join us in our #PrayersOfMyHeart #AttitudeOfGratitude movement.”

About the author Debbie Taylor Williams is a genuinely inspiring person. Married for over forty years to her college sweetheart, she and Keith make their home in our community. Two children and five grandchildren bless their family. When Debbie isn’t writing, speaking, or playing with grandkids, you’ll find her at a kickboxing class or enjoying time with Keith cooking, hiking, golfing, or fishing.

Its column-based design makes Prayers of My Heart distinctive from other journals: You write the names of those for whom you regularly pray across the top of the page in columns. Recording prayers under a person’s name enables you to see the variety of ways you’re praying for them as well as to quickly locate answered prayers under their column.

Debbie is passionate about Jesus and helping others know Him. She’s known for her ability to communicate Biblical truth with joy, creating spiritual take-aways for her audiences. Based on her books Pray with Purpose and Prayers of My Heart, her P.R.A.Y. with Passion Across the Nation conference, has been held in over thirty-five states and her 365 Days of Praise blog leads thousands each day in praise of God. You also can find her contributions on blogs MomLife Today and A Wife Like Me.

Debbie adds, “I believe it’s important to acknowledge when God answers our prayers—and it’s a faith builder.” The book’s benefits expanding from there, Prayers of My Heart becomes a gratitude journal.

Get your copy of Prayers of My Heart today at DebbieTaylorWilliams.com/prayers-of-my-heart, or at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Christian Book Distributors, and wherever books are sold.

“Studies show that people who keep a gratitude journal are more optimistic about life than those who don’t,” states Debbie. “If ever there was a time for Christians to show forth our hope and faith in Christ, it’s now.”

by Amber Thomason

Back to School Car Seat Safety In the late ‘90s, before child and booster

seat information was readily available and legislation was passed, car crashes were the leading cause of death for American children under four. That is no longer true. Studies have shown a whopping 15% reduction in motor vehicle-related fatalities for all child occupants. But what car seat to use and when?

This is a tricky one. You may think your child has outgrown their current seat or is big enough to sit forward-facing but it’s vitally important to consult an expert by calling your car seat’s manufacturer’s customer service as many of them are certified technicians. You can also attend a local car seat checkup event. Always read the instructions and labels on your car seat.

The booster seat will be the last phase of car seats you need for your child. But when is it time to retire that booster seat? When your child passes Safe Kid’s Seat Belt Test: •The child’s knees should bend at the edge of the seat when his or her back and bottom are against the vehicle seat back; •The vehicle lap belt should fit across the upper thighs, not the stomach area; and •The shoulder belt should fit across the shoulder and chest. This means approximately 4’9’’ and 80 to 100 pounds. This is usually between the ages of eight-to-twelve-years-old. When in doubt, check with your local law enforcement office for a car seat safety check and stay connected with any local safety events by joining us on Facebook at Amber Thomason State Farm. Have a great new school year and stay safe.

PRO-TIP:

•Keep your child rear-facing until at least two, even if they are already in a convertible seat. (The convertible seat will

allow for the additional growth of a two-year-old if the rearfacing-only seat is out grown.)

•Whether your child should move to another seat depends on their height and weight—not age. Again, read the labels on your seats.

Pain Pills or Massage choose wisely by Lea Heflin Jimenez, MA, LMT

M

any people view massage therapy as a luxury; something that is only indulged in as a rare treat. Yet, countless people are dealing with pain regularly, and it is impeding their lifestyle. Schedule an appointment with your doctor, and it’s possible that you’ll leave the office with a prescription for pain-killers. Let’s think for a moment about those pills. Do we really want to “kill the pain?” Of course, we don’t want to feel uncomfortable anymore, but pain signals serve an important function. When the body sends out a pain signal, it’s basically saying “Something is wrong. Please help!” And our response? Taking medication to silence the alert that there is something that needs our attention. Occasional anti-inflammatories can help stop our body’s “pain-spasm-pain” cycle, and help us get back to feeling better. But, at what point do we get to the bottom of what caused the pain in the first place? This is where professional massage therapy can come in and do wonders for pain and inflammation. The benefits of this amazing treatment option are vast. Massage stimulates blood circulation to improve the supply of oxygen and nutrients to body tissues

and helps your lymphatic system flush away waste products. It also eases tense and knotted muscles and stiff joints, improving mobility and flexibility. Studies have also shown that massage therapy lessens anxiety, depression, and insomnia. The average American pays more attention to car maintenance than self-care—yet, we keep our bodies for life, and trade in our vehicles every couple of years. We rush to get the oil changed every 3000 miles and rotate the tires before a road trip. Our bodies need the same—regular maintenance. Schedule a massage therapy session for yourself today. Getting Home Safely

by Kim Clarkson

The words home safety probably make you think of home security systems. While these systems do protect you, there are other threats to home security that are causing home buyers billions of dollars. If you’ve recently bought or sold a home, you probably received information through email. Using technology speeds up the process but it has also opens up an opportunity for criminals in the form of cyber hacking. An example of fraudulent activity may look like this: You’re buying a home and you have been receiving information from your title company through email. One email asks you to wire your down payment for closing.

Encrypted Email

you receive an encrypted email, you will be 1 When asked to enter a user name and password before

you can open the message. This secures the email message and keeps criminals “locked out.”

Call, Call, Call

title company should call you to confirm wir2 The ing instructions after they are sent. If you receive

instructions but haven’t been contacted by phone, call your title company before wiring money.

Cashier’s Check

a cashier’s check to your closing is a great 3 Bringing option because you are personally handing your money to a responsible party at the closing.

What might actually be happening: A cyber hacker has hacked into to your unsecured email account and monitoring your messages. He or she has learned a lot about your purchase. The criminal then creates a fake email account and sends a message telling you where to wire your money for closing. You follow the instructions, not realizing you have been given fraudulent account information. After your bank wires your money to the hacker’s account, it disappears without a trace.

Be smart when it comes to buying a home. Ask your real estate agent or title company what measures they use to protect you from cyber criminal attacks. This knowledge can potentially save you thousands of dollars.

According to the FBI, cyber criminals stole at least $1 billion from real estate transactions in 2017. As scary as that sounds, there is good news. Smart title companies are taking steps to keep this from happening to you. Below are processes our company uses to protect buyers:

Trees

by Trena Cullins

fter this hotter-than-usual summer, it may be time to reevaluate your landscape to determine where you’ll appreciate additional shade. Adding shade trees can save you up to forty percent on energy costs. When choosing a tree there are several things to consider. Deciduous trees are generally the best choice because they provide shade during the summer for cooling (and pleasure) as well as sunlight in the winter to help heat your home. Size and shape matter. Do a little research so you’ll know the size of the mature tree—will it be too big for the place you want to plant it—or just right? If it flowers, do you want to contend with the mess that causes—or not? Consider also the life expectancy. An old saying, “fast to grow, fast to die,” is

true. I always say plant for the future, not your life expectancy. Why plant trees this time of year? As we look forward to cooler weather, so do our landscape plants. By planting now, the tree has time to semi-establish its roots before being bombarded with summer’s extreme and stressful heat. PRMC Volunteer Auxiliary by Judy Jones

Handmade with Love

Peterson Regional Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary

has many volunteers, some of whom you will not find at the hospital or the Ambulatory Care Center. These talented and caring folks are busy at home or elsewhere creating beautiful blankets and caps to be given to babies born at PRMC, or crafting comforting stuffed bears for anxious children in the Emergency Room. Once upon a time in 1997, the Hospital Chaplain was in the Emergency Room when he heard a child crying. He happened to be holding a small stuffed bear a dear friend had lovingly created many years ago. The Chaplain went to the child and said, “I have a little bear here who is so ugly that no one could possibly love him. Could you love this little bear?” Intrigued, the child stopped crying and the medical team was able to diagnose and treat him more effectively. A tradition was born that day, a pattern was created and soon volunteer crafters began making the stuffed toys they called “Ugly Bears.” Mildred Barton lovingly and painstakingly coordinates the work of a number of crafters who make the Ugly Bears. The Auxiliary purchases the polyfil and Mildred and her team of five or six work with the donated percale material to cut the one-piece pattern, stitch, stuff, and then paint the bears with permanent magic markers. One of a kind, their little bear faces can be funny, happy, sad, or sleepy. They are truly unique and a “Made with Love” label is stitched to the back of a leg. They are then delivered to the Emergency Department for distribution to the child patients.

the making of the Ugly Bears for 15 years.

In the fall of 2000, the Auxiliary saw another way they could make a difference. Volunteers began knitting infant caps and this program soon expanded to include lovely knitted blankets for each of the 450 to 500 babies born each year at PRMC. Every new mom takes her precious newborn home swaddled in a knitted blanket and cap or a flannel blanket with a crocheted edge—a gift from the Hospital Auxiliary. Ann Livengood is the coordinator for the blanket/cap volunteers who number eighteen members. Ann devotes many, many hours organizing and overseeing the making, packaging, and distribution of this handiwork. Some crafters are PRMC employees and others work a regular shift as a volunteer. As well as donating their time and talent, they also mostly donate the yarn for their creations. The Auxiliary is ever mindful of these wonderful folks who give so willingly of themselves and their resources to make the Made with Love program a reality. They are well and truly appreciated! Love to make a difference? Love knitting? Want to donate material or yarn? Call Judy Jones, the Volunteer Coordinator, at 830-258-7630, who will be happy to talk with you about such opportunities.
