I chick-adee-dee!

perchick’o-ree!

Teachers and neighbors can be challenging to buy for. This is where the fun comes in. During the holidays there are an abundance of items made entirely of bird seed. Chapels, casitas and chalets. Some of which have usable housing underneath the bird food—two gifts in one! There are festive seed wreaths and bells, which birds love. The hands-down favorite though is seed characters—Buttons the Snowman, Blossom the Skunk, Rascal the Raccoon, Hoot the Owl, and the newest member is a mini character named Millie. These are fun, festive, inexpensive and impressive. They make wonderful gifts for kids, apartment dwellers, those in nursing homes and to someone who may have difficulty filling feeders. Anyone who loves the birds would be delighted with these charming characters.

cheercheercheer!

If you are at your wits’ end trying to come up with an idea for someone who feeds the birds, consider signing them up for the Daily Savings Club. For only $25, it entitles the bearer to receive 15% off all bird food every day for a year. There is also a very nice gift involved which you can give or keep for yourself. This is the gift that keeps on giving all year. Whatever your gift-giving challenges, giving the gift of nature is always a no-brainer.

Give the Gift of Bird Feeding from

IPads, laptops and big screen TVs make great gifts, but they are gifts that keep one inside. If you give the gift of bird feeding, you are opening doors to the wonderment that awaits outside. Bird feeding/watching is the number two hobby only to gardening. With 54 million people partaking in the bird feeding hobby one could make the argument that we truly, at our core, want to be one with nature. Giving someone special a new bird feeder and some tasty seeds to fill it will be a gift that will be enjoyed long after the holidays.

Kevin & Linda Pillow are the proud owners of Wilds Birds Unlimited Nature Shop located at 855 Junction Hwy in Kerrville. Each staff member is a Certified Bird Feeding Specialist and can help you discover a refuge in your own backyard. 830-895-7393.

Season’s

Treatings

We all know someone who is frustrated with the squirrels and doves going after their bird seed. There is a solution for that problem. Imagine the brownie points you could make by giving an Eliminator squirrel and dove proof feeder. This weight activated feeder can be hung in a tree and the ports will close when a larger bird or squirrel tries to get food. There are also pole systems that can be used with a raccoon baffle that will deter critters from reaching your feeders. How about that person on your list who has everything? They are some of the toughest people to buy for. A plethora of gifts await in a nature store. For one, there is the Flying Start Feeder—a feeder food combo that allows one to get started bird feeding for under $15. Another idea that can be had for under $10 is feeding suet. Suet is popular because of the ease and the number of birds you can attract with just one food choice. Suet feeders come in a variety of styles and the food is inexpensive. 30│ Nov-Dec 2015 │ KCP

LANDSCAPING AND GARDENING

TREES The Perfect Time of Year

For Planting The ideal time to plant trees

and shrubs is during the dormant season after leaf drop or early spring before budbreak. Weather conditions are cool and allow plants to establish roots in the new location before spring rains and summer heat stimulate new top growth. However, trees properly cared for in the nursery or garden center, and given the appropriate care during transport to prevent damage, can be planted throughout the growing season. In either situation, proper handling during planting is essential to ensure a healthy future for new trees and shrubs. My favorite large trees for this area are Monterrey Oak, Cedar Elm, Burr Oak, Bigtooth Maple, and Mexican Sycamore. In 2012 we planted these and others at the then new Peterson Plaza downtown.

If the tree you are planting is B&B (balled & burlapped), it is important to understand that its root system has been reduced during transplanting. As a result of the trauma caused by the digging process, trees commonly exhibit what is known as transplant shock. Transplant shock is indicated by slow growth and reduced vigor following transplanting. Proper site preparation before and during planting, coupled with good follow-up care, reduces the amount of time the plant experiences transplant shock and allows the tree to quickly establish in its new location. 32 │ Nov-Dec 2015 │ KCP

Carefully follow these steps to reduce the stress placed on the plant at the time of planting. Dig a shallow, broad planting hole.

Make the hole wide, as much as three times the diameter of the root ball but only as deep as the root ball. It is important to make the hole wide because the roots on the newly establishing tree must push through surrounding soil in order to establish. Breaking up the soil in a large area around the tree provides the newly emerging roots room to expand into loose soil to hasten establishment.

Identify the trunk flare.

The trunk flare is where the roots spread at the base of the tree. This point should be partially visible after the tree has been planted (see diagram). If the trunk flare is not partially visible, you may have to remove some soil from the top of the root ball. Find it so you can determine how deep the hole needs to be for proper planting.

Place the tree at the proper height.

Before placing the tree in the hole, check to see that the hole has been dug to the proper depth and no more. The majority of the roots on the newly planted tree will develop in the top 12 inches of soil. If the tree is planted too deeply, new roots will have difficulty developing because of a lack of oxygen. It is better to plant the tree a little high, 2 to 4 inches above the base of the trunk flare, than to plant it at or below the original growing level. This planting level will allow for some settling (see diagram).

Fill the hole gently but firmly.

Fill the hole about one-third full and gently but firmly pack the soil around the base of the root ball. Then, if the root ball is wrapped, cut and remove any fabric, plastic, string, and wire from around the trunk and root ball to facilitate growth (see diagram). Be careful not to damage the trunk or roots in the process. Fill the remainder of the hole, taking care to firmly pack soil to eliminate air pockets that may cause roots to dry out. To avoid this problem, add the soil a few inches at a time and settle with water. Continue this process until the hole is filled and the tree is firmly planted.

Stake the tree, if necessary.

If the tree is grown and dug properly at the nursery, staking for support will not be necessary in most home landscape situations. Studies have shown that trees establish more quickly and develop stronger trunk and root systems if they are not staked at the time of planting. However, protective staking may be required on sites where lawn mower damage, vandalism, or windy conditions are concerns. With this method, two stakes used in conjunction with a wide, flexible tie material on the lower half of the tree will hold the tree upright, provide flexibility, and minimize injury to the trunk (see diagram). Remove support staking and ties after the first year of growth.

Mulch the base of the tree.

Mulch is simply organic matter applied to the area at the base of the tree. It acts as a blanket to hold moisture, it moderates soil temperature extremes, and it reduces competition from grass and weeds. Some good choices are leaf litter, pine straw, shredded bark, peat moss, or composted wood chips. A 2- to 4-inch layer is ideal. More than 4 inches may cause a problem with oxygen and moisture levels. When placing mulch, be sure that the actual trunk of the tree is not covered. Doing so may cause decay of the living bark at the base of the tree. A mulch-free area, 1 to 2 inches wide at the base of the tree, is sufficient to avoid moist bark conditions and prevent decay.

Custom Glass & Mirror commercial and residential

Provide follow-up care.

Keep the soil moist but not soaked; overwatering causes leaves to turn yellow or fall off. Water trees at least once a week, barring rain, and more frequently during hot weather. When the soil is dry below the surface of the mulch, it is time to water. Continue until midfall, tapering off for lower temperatures that require less-frequent watering.

Use two opposing, flexible ties when staking is necessary. Ties should be placed on the lower half of the tree and allow trunk movement.

Holiday TIME

the weather turns cooler, with winter fast approaching, here are a few tips for keeping your holiday plants beautiful during the season.

Christmas cactus, (Zygo) is another holiday fave. This beauty will reward you with colorful blossoms year after year. Although it is called a cactus, it does need more water than regular cacti. A good bright light is essential. Do not fertilize when blooming, only after it is finished. You will need to keep it in the dark for 14 hours a day around October to mid-November in order for it to be in bloom for the next season.

The Poinsettia is not a poisonous plant. It does have a latex sap which can be a skin irritant, yet it is not lethal if ingested. Keep your children fed with sugar cookies, and more than likely they won’t eat plants in your home.

Enjoy this time with family and friends. Let’s all spend some time being blessed.

Purchase a plant that looks healthy, and avoid adverse weather conditions when transporting home. Poinsettias are easily damaged by cold. Once home, keep your poinsettia away from a heat source or a cold draft. A good bright light is best, but no direct sunlight. Water thoroughly only when dry. Do not let them sit in water. There is no need to fertilize your poinsettias during the blooming season. The blossoms of a poinsettia are the little yellow clusters in the center of the leaves called bracts.

Welcome to the

TIN STAR SALON by Katie Davis

A

fter writing about hair in Kerr County People for four years, I thought I’d inject a personal note about the Tin Star Salon and its occupants. We have been around for a number of years and arrived at the current location in 1994. Prior to becoming the Tin Star Salon in 2001 it was called Hair Country. The previous owner, Gale Alford, bought the salon in 2001 and I purchased it from her in 2012. Gale is still here on a part-time basis. She has been doing hair since 1978, previously worked with Aveda, and owned two salons. It’s understood that when you buy the salon it comes with Christi O’Brien. Christi has been with the salon since the beginning. Through different owners and remodels she has seen them all! Christi has been doing hair in Kerrville for 28 years. Mario Gonzalez has been at the Tin Star for eight years. He’s been a stylist for 28 years with 10 being spent as a cutting educator. Mario has also been published in Allure magazine’s Little Black Book.

Dawn Kneese, with over 20 years of hairdressing, is a part-time stylist. Dawn has been with us for three years and has also been an instructor and an educator with Paul Mitchell. Mercedes Hawkins, our newest member at only a year and a half is going strong in her eighth year of doing hair. I am Katie Davis-Kleespies, owner and operator of Tin Star. After 10 years as a nail tech, I became a stylist 12 years ago. And I am a Rusk color educator. Other than Gale, we are all welcoming new clients. With our combined experience of almost 130 years, one of us is bound to be the right hairdresser for you!

Katie has been in the beauty industry for more than 20 years. She is a member of the Rusk Color Team, owner and stylist at Tin Star Salon. 319 Earl Garrett in Kerrville. Call her at 895-5030.

Peterson Hospice

Paying It Forward

Celebrating National Hospice Month

At Peterson Hospice, our staff truly understands the meaning of Paying It Forward. As the only not for profit hospice in Kerr County, your giving allows us to pay it forward to individuals in Kerrville and the surrounding areas. Giving comes in many different forms for us. Peterson Hospice Volunteers give of themselves. Our staff is so blessed to have over 120 talented volunteers. Endless hours are offered through patient visits. Others offer their time in the floral program, arranging and delivering flowers, helping to brighten the day for those on hospice. The revenue from the Peterson Hospice Thrift Store offers financial assistance to offset the cost of our service. Peterson Hospice Care is offered to anyone that meets disease guidelines, regardless of financial status. Without your donations of gently used items to the thrift store, we could not offer important end of life care. In December, Peterson Hospice will offer another opportunity for giving. On December 10th, we will offer the 4th Annual Tree of Lights. During this campaign, we invite you to donate in memory or in honor of a loved one. All donations benefit the Peterson Hospice Blessing Fund, which assists in needs of hospice patients that will not be covered by private insurance, Medicare of Medicaid. Other programs and services offered at no charge to our community are: • No One Dies Alone-a volunteer support program offered to individuals in the last hours of life • Peterson Pathways-a volunteer program offered to those in need of socialization and visitation • Bridging the Gap-a children’s bereavement program Support Groups: • Cancer • Dementia Caregiver • Parkinson’s • Adult Bereavement For more information on volunteering, Peterson Hospice Thrift Store and online giving, please go to www.petersonhospice.com or call us at 830-258-7799. All donations for Peterson Hospice serve our local community! Thank you for giving, so we can continue to Pay It Forward! We are located at 1121 Broadway in Kerrville.

Don Irwin

Evening to Remember returns for an

International Steinway Piano Artist

by Tina Woods

Do

you experience memory loss or know someone who does? Memory loss affects many people, especially as the years add up. Dementia Care Advocates of the Hill Country is a group comprised of the Dietert Center, Peterson Regional Medical Center, Peterson Hospice, Above the Clouds Memory Care, the Joan Iman family and Kerrville’s First United Methodist Church. This group has been formed to raise awareness of the needs of those with dementia, and to provide support through education and services. Our newest program is “Music and Memory,” part of a national movement which seeks to bring personal music to those suffering from dementia. We’re hosting An Evening to Remember on Thursday, November 19, at 7p.m., once again featuring a concert by international Steinway Piano Artist, Don Irwin.

Don Irwin’s music ranges from the classics to show tunes and original compositions. While playing, he communicates the sentiments of his heart and tells the stories behind each selection. Don’s mother passed away from Alzheimer’s disease, and he is performing in Kerrville to raise funds for the Dementia Care Advocates. This intimate one-man show will be at Kerrville’s First United Methodist Church. Individual tickets are $25, and sponsored tables of 8 are $300. Additional levels of sponsorship are also available. Seating is limited, so call Mollie Scherer, Dietert’s Development Director, at 830-702-4044, to reserve your place. Memory loss can affect anyone, but there is help and support to live life to the fullest. For more information contact Tina Woods (830) 792-4044, ext. 247, or visit the Center’s website: www.dietertcenter.org.

Information Desk, Gift Shop, Surgical Waiting Room, and Emergency Department. They escort patients, deliver mail and flowers, answer telephones, take messages, and aid staff. Many work “behind the scenes”—typing, filing, working on computers—while others make bears for the smallest patients, and knit or crochet blankets and hats for our newborns. In the awards year October, 2014 through September, 2015, this remarkable group gave 16,800 hours inside the hospital, and 19,200 hours crafting the ER bears and the hand-made baby items. As well, their fund-raising activities have provided 16 nursing scholarships totaling $24,000 plus the annual pledge of $10,000 towards their $100,000 gift to help PRMC purchase the daVinci Surgical System®. After their shift is completed, Volunteers enjoy a convivial lunch in the cafeteria with their co-workers. If you think you would fit perfectly into this outstanding group, please stop by or give us a call. Judy is the Volunteer Coordinator and Patient Representative for PRMC. She is a 28 year PRMC employee and was awarded the Duan Packard “Employee of the Year” Award for 2012 by PRMC. Combating anxiety naturally by Dr. Leigh Ann Grasso, RPh & Dr. Melissa Hartman, RPh

any people in today’s busy society feel anxious. Whether it’s running the kids to extracurricular activities, managing the pressures of work, or handling financial woes, many of us experience anxiety on a regular basis. Anxiety can make you feel worried and “on edge.” Physical manifestations of anxiety can include tense muscles, sweating, stomach upset, shallow breathing, or a rapid heart rate. You may also have difficulty sleeping at night, which can lead to feelings of tiredness throughout the day. While prescription medications can be helpful, they can often lead to unwanted side effects. Other options exist for those who would like to try a more natural approach. L-theanine is a naturally-occurring amino acid that is found in green tea. It may promote relaxation without causing drowsiness, so it can be taken throughout the day. L-theanine also may ease nervous and irritable feelings and enhance concentration. L-theanine is sold by itself or in combination with other calming agents. Gamma-aminobutyric acid, or GABA, is a naturallyoccurring amino acid that acts as the main calming neurotransmitter in the brain. Taking a GABA supplement can calm the flow of electrical impulses in the brain to cause a greater sense of emotional well-being. GABA is usually combined with other supplements to enhance relaxation.

RelaxMax™, made by Xymogen, is a powdered drink mix that combines L-theanine, GABA, and other ingredients to create a formula that can lead to a more calmed, relaxed, and well-balanced emotional state. It comes in cherry and unflavored formulations that are mixed with water and taken once or twice a day. As with most Xymogen products, RelaxMax™ does not contain allergens such as soy, wheat, gluten, nuts, or dairy products. If you are experiencing anxiety, do not lose hope. Help is available in many forms. Relaxation techniques, caffeine reduction, and natural supplementation can provide substantial relief. L-theanine, GABA, RelaxMax™, and other calming supplements are available at Annie’s Apothecary. Dr. Leigh Ann Grasso, RPh, owner of Annie’s Apothecary and Boerne compounding pharmacist, earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Texas College of Pharmacy in 2004. Annie’s Apothecary originally opened in 2007 to serve the patients and pets of the Hill Country. Dr. Melissa Hartman, RPh, Kerrville compounding pharmacist, earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Texas College of Pharmacy in 2013. 31007 IH 10 W #108, Boerne, TX, 830-981-4774. 1228 Bandera Highway, Kerrville, TX, 830-257-0732. www.AnniesRx.com

Mike and I approached Diane Ferrell at Kerr County People Magazine because we wanted to promote and expose our business, MR Home Automation, and we also wanted to explain and bring a better understanding about home automation in general. We chose Kerr County People Magazine because of the distribution, locations of distribution and the likability of the magazine throughout the community. KCP Mar-Ap

for pricing and availability.

Mike and I strongly feel that our goals were met during the run of the March/April issue that featured MR Home Automation. We were extremely pleased with the overall delivery and with Diane’s team who worked on our feature. The photographer, Michael Anglin with Artifex 42, shot and developed an amazing cover photo and group photo. We appreciated his vision, direction, professionalism and friendliness. Anne Schneider, the writer of the article, really grasped what Mike and I wanted to get across to the readers. She delivered it in a clear and understandable way. From the beginning, Kerr County People Magazine made the whole process extremely easy and stress free. The results from advertising in Kerr County People Magazine exceeded our expectations. If you are a business owner who would like more exposure for your company or a community organization that would like to generate awareness, Mike and I would definitely recommend advertising in this magazine.
