Farmers' W

505

ednesday, September 2 from 4 to 7 p.m. is the Grand Opening of Exit 505 Farmers Market, located at IH-10 (Exit 505) on the southwest side of the intersection. A group of local food enthusiasts is circling the wagons to bring a weekly farmers’ market to our area.

Landowner Janet Meek became interested in the Relocalization Movement that is inspiring many communities to take stock of their local resources and network with each other to create more food, jobs, energy, and water locally. Tired of the same old fast-food options on the interstate, she also wanted to do something different to develop her interstate location. In addition to wanting healthy food options for the local and regional community that regularly shops in Kerrville, she believes Kerrville is also well positioned to become an interstate highway food destination where travelers, and even pets, could stop to stretch and get some good home-cooking and local ranch-to-table offerings. She would also like to see Hill Country families benefit by providing a place where they can sell their produce directly to the public at retail prices.

But it was the enthusiastic response to this idea by other “locavores” that really got the ball rolling. Ninety-something Warren Holmgreen of Alamo Springs started selling smoked chicken at the site two years ago and started telling vendors at other farmers’ markets about Kerrville’s potential. One of these was our own Scott Thibodeaux of Wahoo’s Seafood Co. who brings in fresh seafood from the Texas coast each week. Another was Jack Holmgreen, who has moved his rainwater harvesting business to the area and sells award-winning bottled rainwater under the label “Texas Independence Water.” Jack also helped establish the Clearlake Shores Farmers Market near Houston. Also, Peggy Wilson brought her love of good food and her skills as a business and nonprofit facilitator and coach.

Market Kerrville by Janet Meek

The group has put together two awareness events this year—one in March and one in July. The local response has been outstanding. Families, friends, and a growing number of vendors showed up to enjoy Wahoo’s Cajun seafood and Warren’s smoked chicken for dinner and do a little shopping while listening to Graham Warwick, the Hill Country Bluesman. Stay tuned for other great offerings to include: featured wineries and musicians; kids’ corner activities for the youngsters; and a schoolyard-to-market program where students can price, display, and sell produce they have grown in their gardens. The new market still faces lots of challenges. One of these is getting enough local sustainably grown produce to sell. Andrea McGilvray of Bandera is doing her part. She grows beautiful organic fruits and vegetables year-round. And Melissa and Mike Maynard of Hunt premiered their beautiful hydroponic lettuce at the July market. To encourage small growers, there will be a free Backyard Gardeners’ table at the market where local gardeners can sell their surplus. Exit 505 Farmers Market is dedicated to serving the community and educating the public about healthy food and sustainable living. Its mission is to increase the supply of healthy food to all segments of the community particularly the underserved; to cultivate and grow local, sustainable food systems; to facilitate public access to fresh fruits and vegetables and teach skills for growing and

preparing them at home; to educate and inform the public about the many health, economic and environmental benefits of healthy eating; to preserve family farms, and encourage buying local; and to build a community gathering space and re-create the town square of the past while developing links between consumers and local farmers, ranchers, and food producers. The group is forming a nonprofit corporation and seeking tax-exempt status based on this vision and would appreciate letters of support from the community sent to our email address below. Exit 505 Farmers Market is looking for volunteers to help so that its vendors can concentrate on their quality food offerings, but is also thrilled by the number and quality of volunteers who are already showing up. Stefanie Rector and Sara Cotton did an awesome “worm farm” for kids at the Sneak Preview event. With the help of the volunteers who are coming forward and with a Grower Development and Marketing Assistance program in the works, we hope to be able to sustain the weekly market. So come on out and join the fun at Exit 505 Farmers Market each Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. starting September 2. Let’s all go local. For more information email us at HubManager1@ HillCountryFoodHub.org and like our “Exit 505 Farmers Market” Facebook page.

very fall Kerrville welcomes

open-air painters from around the country to participate in Kerr Arts & Cultural Center’s “Plein Air Wet Paint Show & Sale.” The show will run from October 3 through October 24, but it will be preceded by a three day “Outdoors” painting event that has become a strong tradition among Hill Country art lovers.

Beginning on Wednesday, September 30, for three days Plein Air painters from around the US will cruise around the Hill Country looking for the right place to set up their easels and begin painting. Some simply find a secluded nook by the Guadalupe River, or set up alongside a country road. Others have permission to go onto private property and paint subjects such as old barns, weathered fences, curious horses and goats, and rusting old pickups. Each painter soon accumulates a crowd of fans who bring picnic lunches and, from a respectful distance, watch the paintings evolve.

At 6:30 p.m. the doors of KACC are opened to the public and the reception and opening of the month-long “Wet Paint Show & Sale” begins. It will run until 8:00 p.m., with wine and food, and with a buzz in the gallery that has to be experienced to be believed. Over 100 art lovers from around the state were on hand for last year’s opening reception, and the awards were greeted with rolling applause. Jim Longacre “Earl Garrett Gold”

The afternoon of the third day, Friday, October 2, the painters all pack up their kits and head to downtown Kerrville for the popular and exciting “Quick Draw” painting contest, which will last from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. In this event painters have 90 minutes to choose a downtown location, get set up, and complete a painting while being cheered on by their followers. This year, as in years past, there will be a downtown Block Party lasting from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. that swirls around the “Quick Draw” painters. Then promptly at the 90-minute mark (6:30) the painters wrap up and bring their paintings to the front steps of KACC where they are judged, and awards are bestowed.

What return are you really earning on your money?

If you’re like most people, you probably want to know what return you might expect before you invest. But to translate a given rate of return into actual income or growth potential, you’ll need to understand the difference between nominal return and real return, and how that difference can affect your ability to target financial goals. Let’s say you have a certificate of deposit (CD) that’s about to expire. The yield on the new three-year CD you’re considering is 1.5%.

14 │ Sept-Oct 2015 │ KCP

by John Rich

But that 1.5% is the CD’s nominal rate of return; it doesn’t account for inflation or taxes. If you’re taxed at the 28% federal income tax rate, roughly 0.42% of that 1.5% will be gobbled up by federal taxes on the interest. Okay, you say, that still leaves an interest rate of 1.08%; at least you’re earning something. However, you also need to consider the purchasing power of the interest that the CD pays. Even though inflation is relatively low today, it can still affect your purchasing power, especially over time. Let’s say that consumer prices have gone up by 1% over the past year and you adjust your 1.08% after-tax return for inflation. Suddenly, you’re barely breaking even on your investment. What’s left after the impact of inflation and taxes is your real return, because that’s what you’re really earning in actual purchasing power. If the nominal return on an investment is low enough, the real return can actually be negative, depending on your tax bracket and the inflation rate over time. Though this hypothetical example doesn’t represent the performance of any actual investment, it illustrates the importance of understanding what you’re really earning. Knowing the difference between nominal and real return may help you make better decisions when it comes to investing your money. You’ll want to choose investments that match your financial goals and tolerance for risk. In some cases, the security an investment offers may be important enough that you’re willing to accept a low real return; in other cases, you may choose an investment that has the potential for a higher real return but carries a higher degree of risk. The last time I saw Paris, her heart was warm and gay, I heard the laughter of her heart in every street café. –sung by Ann Southern, 1941, in Lady Be Good; lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein Save the date of Sunday, September 27 for a real treat with Parisian flair at the Hill Country Arts Foundation annual Visual Arts fundraiser. On the banks of the scenic Guadalupe River (imagining the French’s River Seine), come stroll the artists’ studios and peruse the art assembled there for an exciting silent auction. Try your luck at winning astonishing raffle items. Take your leisure at café tables in the various studios—partake of champagne and quiche a la carte; indulge yourself in fine chocolates— after all, how often are you in Paris?

Proceeds will benefit the Visual Arts Center’s Duncan-McAshan Gallery 2016 exhibitions and the summer Young Artist’s Camps. HCAF Visual Arts Director Rosanne Thrall offers insight into the annual fundraiser, “Through the years, some of the area’s finest painters and artists have worked in these studios—there’s a lot of history here. We are proud to have been a part of that creativity and we want to continue inspiring artists to produce great art.” Join the HCAF to support that goal while you mingle with local artists and fellow patrons in the delightful Parisian café tradition. Seating for the fanciful event is limited so reserve yours now before this Paris afternoon in Ingram passes you by. Sponsored tables and individual tickets both available. And, Darling, do remember actress Audrey Hepburn’s words—Paris is always a good idea.

o you want more birds in your backyard next spring? Then you may want to start sowing some seeds soon. October is the most opportune time to plant for flowers in the spring. Planting natives is always smart in our region, as you never know when we will have another drought situation. So many of our native plants attract wildlife with very little effort. Make sure you get your seeds from a reputable company that uses only native seeds and does not use any fillers from overseas. One of the best in the area is Native American Seed out of Junction. They use 100% native seeds which are surprisingly easy to grow. Most seeds don’t even need to be sown. Just scatter and water.

BIRDS: You should look for plants that produce berries like Carolina buckthorn, American beauty berry bush, agarita and yaupon holly. These will attract your insect/fruit-eating birds like cedar waxwings, mockingbirds and tanagers. For the seed-eating birds plant Indian blanket, Maximilian sunflower, verbena, Mexican hat and cowpen daisy—all favorites of the lesser goldfinch, ladder-backed woodpeckers, sparrows and many others.

BUTTERFLIES: Milkweed of course is

the plant we need for the Monarchs, much of which is mowed down each year. Milkweed isn’t the easiest plant to start, but worth the effort. If you have it growing wild, you may want to mow around it and let it keep reseeding each year. The Queen butterflies love Greg’s mistflower and a butterfly bush will attract most butterflies that occupy the Hill Country.

Best Bargains with Benefits!

HUMMINGBIRDS: This is really a no-brainer. Anything that produces nectar will attract them. They love sages, cigar plants, and the best one—standing cypress. BEES: We really want to keep these little guys hanging around with purple coneflower, bluebonnet and cutleaf daisy. Just imagine your yard this spring with beautiful blooms and birds, bees and butterflies, all enjoying your efforts. By planting a diverse array of native wildflowers and trees now, you will enhance the beauty in your yard twofold. So let’s get planting!

Texas Lions Camp

Making a difference since 1949 by Trish Wilson

William James said, “Act as if what you do makes a difference.

It does.”

Texas Lions Camp

has made a difference in the lives of children and their families since 1949. For the last 67 years, over 68,000 Texas children with special medical needs have been provided a summer camping experience they will never forget. Open year-round with over 500 acres, TLC is a shining example of serving children. CEO Stephen Mabry, celebrating 25 years with Texas Lions Camp this year, believes the atmosphere of camp is about the ability of campers to set goals and having the opportunity to reach them. Children between the ages of 7-16 with qualifying physical disabilities, children between ages 8-15 with Type-1 Diabetes, and children between the ages of 12-16 with Down syndrome are able to attend Texas Lions Camp located in Kerrville, Texas at no cost to them or their family, because people like you act on their behalf and pay the bill. Children who would otherwise be unable to experience the joys 26 │ Sept-Oct 2015 │ KCP

of a childhood summer anywhere else are afforded the programs and facilities that enable them to ride horses even though they live their days in a wheelchair, to paint and do crafts though blind and unable to see their masterpiece, to shoot archery with their feet since they were born without hands, and so much more. Texas Lions Camp made a difference in the life of one young girl who lives each day in a wheelchair. Her smile reveals the joy inside which she can’t wait to share with everyone who crosses her path. Each day of camp she was excited about what adventure was coming. Art, music, drama, fishing or horses, her enthusiasm spread to everyone around her. As her group approached the zip line and climbing walls, she wasn’t sure she could to do either of the activities. She would just cheer on everyone else and not get her hopes up. The counselors approached and asked what activity she would like to do—zip line or climbing wall. Her enthusiastic answer was “Zip line,” with a tinge of hesitation, wondering if it really could be possible. Her harness was placed and helmet strapped on. Her wheelchair was taken to the bottom of the zip line pole. The zip platform, two stories above her head seemed totally out of reach. But with help from trained staff and skillful rigging, she slowly ascended to the high perch to begin the process of zipping.

“Wow, it’s high up here,” she exclaimed as the last of the safety checks were being completed. “Are you ready? Zip on,” announced the instructor. Without hesitation and pure enthusiastic glee, she leaned forward and cut the sky with a squeal of delight. The wind caught her hair and her eyes were wide open so she wouldn’t miss a moment of the experience. As the ride of a lifetime came slowly to a halt and she was lowered back into her awaiting chariot, she smiled. “I don’t have to wonder what it would be like to walk; I know what it’s like to fly.” The Lions of Texas and other generous donors have provided a place where young people who struggle in the world to be seen, heard and to contribute to those around them, can do what they’ve never done, in order to become who they are meant to be. We invite you to be a part of that. If you know a child who can benefit from the Texas Lions Camp program give their name to a Lion or visit our website: www.lionscamp.com. If you want to be a person who acts to make a difference, personally get involved or to donate to the Texas Lions Camp, visit our website today. You can be a person of action, right here and right now. Commit that you no longer look just down or up, but straight ahead and into the eyes of someone who needs you to act. The choice is yours. No one can make it for you. “Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does!” – William James Trish Wilson is the Marketing and Public Relations Director, Texas Lions Camp.

“Our goal is to help you accomplish healthy radiant skin that projects vitality and confidence,” says owner and Medical Director Dr. Ode Young of O Young MD Laser and Medical Aesthetics.

“What we do is not about youth and perfection—it’s about enhancing what nature has given you and retrieving a healthier, well-balanced complexion. We want to keep you looking younger and natural but most importantly, feeling fabulous,” Dr. Ode explains. With so many products and treatments out there, it can be confusing to make the right choice for your skin health. O Young MD Laser and Medical Aesthetics believes every client deserves its staff’s fullest attention and time. Additionally, the clinic respects clients’ personal timeframe and budget.

O Young MD

Laser and Medical Aesthetics is able to treat other areas of the body such as neck, chest, arms, and hands. And there’s more good news for those who choose BBL technology— no skin numbing is needed prior to your treatment and afterwards you can apply makeup immediately, with virtually no down time. Fascinating research demonstrates that with BBL, gene expression can be rejuvenated to that of young skin cells. Dr. Patrick Bitters, pioneer of Age Delay FotoFacial, states, “The Forever Young BBL™ procedure is the closest we have come to the fountain of youth for aging skin.”

Halo ™ by Sciton— changing the face of resurfacing

Aesthetician Emily Russ

“I was very excited to be the first in Texas to acquire Halo™ by Sciton. The combination of low downtime, amazing results, and an easy comfortable treatment makes for extremely happy clients,” assures Dr. Ode. “Halo™ is a hybrid fractional laser that eliminates years of skin damage by precisely targeting the right depth in the dermis. Previous lasers couldn’t effectively remove this damage because the treatment was either too shallow or too deep.” With only 140 Halos™ in the U.S., this laser is on the forefront of medical aesthetic technology. Halo™ restores a youthful reflectivity and radiance to the skin by using heat to stimulate collagen and elastin deep in the dermis, while simultaneously creating channels in the upper dermis to signal the skin to create new tissue. Dr. Ode continues, “I myself experienced Halo™ and share photos of my progress with my clients. They see for themselves how skin responds to this treatment.”

Platelet-Rich Plasma

Aesthetician Jenna Kunz

Forever Young BBL ™

Forever Young BBL™ (Broad Band Light) is an innovative technology from Sciton that uniquely delivers light therapy to treat a broad range of skin conditions caused by skin aging and sun exposure. This process helps restore the skin to its natural healthy state. “I’m able to treat dark spots and skin redness, as well as reduce unwanted hair,” notes Dr. Ode. Additionally, she has developed a successful new BBL protocol for addressing inflamed acne. She also

Another valuable tool in Dr. Ode’s advanced aesthetics technology collection is platelet-rich plasma (PRP)—a natural way to rejuvenate the skin by using the client’s own blood plasma. As a concentrated source of platelets, PRP contains and releases several fundamental protein growth factors that stimulate healing of bone and soft tissue. “I draw a small amount of blood in a specialized tube and place it in a centrifuge to separate the platelets from other components in the blood,” details Dr. Ode. “I use the resulting platelet-rich plasma to organically fill facial hollows and lines. It’s the PRP’s signaling proteins that allow the skin to rejuvenate and recreate youthful contours.” Dr. Ode confides, “This treatment is amazing on its own or in combination with hyaluronic fillers or the Rejuvapen procedure.” continued on next page

Supportive staff, products, and events Licensed aestheticians Emily Russ and Jenna Kunz bridge an important gap at the clinic— offering a non-medical perspective to Dr. Ode’s medical knowledge-based practice. “Emily and I have worked together, in the field of clinical aesthetics, since 2008. She is a clinical skin care professional devoted to cosmetic medicine and to our clients,” remarks Dr. Ode. “Jenna’s additional role of front desk coordinator allows her to get to know clients on a personal level and share her skin-health experience. As a team we provide concierge service and procedures that deliver desirable outcomes.” Be sure to check the clinic’s website for more information on its big fall event, Beauty Behind the Mask—an exciting way to discover what O Young MD Laser and Medical Aesthetics has to offer. “It’s our goal to

Take a look around the room. Does it need a fresh coat of paint? Window treatments? Or anything else? If it also serves as a storage place, move the clutter to the garage or other place. The less clutter, the more comfortable. Then make sure everything in the room is squeaky clean. If there is an en suite make sure it is clean and stocked with fresh linens, toilet paper, and toiletries. No en suite? Then simply put a stack of soft, fluffy towels and washcloths, along with a basket of toiletries, on the dresser. Fresh, soft bed linens are a must. For luxury linens without the price tag, check out Tuesday Morning. Layer the bed with a blanket and throw so your guests can be warm. Many sleep with more than one pillow, so a couple of extra pillows would be nice. A luggage rack is a much-appreciated convenience. For guests staying longer than a weekend, make space in the closet and dresser for their belongings. And don’t forget water—most prefer bottled. Top it all off with some fresh flowers and anything else you think would make them feel at home. Before their arrival, ask if they have any dietary restrictions. Set up a beverage station in the kitchen so if they get up early everything they need is in one spot. Not everybody drinks coffee so it’s important to know what morning beverages to have on hand.

LANDSCAPING AND GARDENING

by Zack Derese

The Outdoor Guy

Go Local

As a famous person once said, “The pen is mightier than the shovel” or something to that effect…

B

eing a free market advocate, I do not want to legislate what people do, but rather influence how they think. If consumers are given correct and relevant information, their ensuing decisions make the market a better environment. My aspiration in this article is to go to bat for the Local Guy—the good old boy, the hardworking, the patriotic American, the man with a pickup truck who ain’t afraid to get his hands dirty, always ready to help his neighbor—Local Guy… In landscaping I have heard people brag, “I got this company from (Austin/ Houston/Lithuania) to come do my work.” The connotation behind the statement leads us to believe that a diligent search of local firms yielded no viable results, and the client was forced to find expertise from far away lands to solve their unique dilemma. There may be an occasional situation that necessitates long distance involvement, but we are blessed in the Hill Country to have a plethora of resources available. Just as the “Go Local” mantra has gained momentum in grocery stores and other retail outlets, we must examine our motivation for reaching beyond our local circles: Is it far-sightedness, or are we really lacking competency close to home? Having played on both sides of this field, I will say that it is intriguing being brought in from out of town—the greater the distance to the client’s project, the more they treat me like an expert. (In Brazil, I was practically worshiped!) However, my only chance at success in those situations is to develop relationships with the locals and tap into their knowledge. The list of advantages using locals is extensive: local knowledge of soil types, water pH, wildlife habits, etc.; availability after project completion for trouble-shooting and maintenance issues; more time to spend on-site and less time driving; keeping your money in the community; and the list could continue. Cons: Hmmmm…I’m thinking. I’m thinking! Seriously, as mentioned before there may be times when a challenge is so specific that an

out-of-towner is the only solution; but at least start your search close to home. You may be amazed at the skills, knowledge, and resources our hometown possesses. I’ll tell you a quick story that illustrates my point. We have been involved with a local entity (let’s call them ABC Inc.) that chooses a place on their property every summer to landscape. It started many years ago when they brought me in for the very first phase. We designed and installed a plaza area complete with water feature, trellises, seating areas, and flagstone/decorative concrete pathways. ABC was thrilled with the results. So the following year, they hired a young landscape architect from San Antonio. I found out later that they brought him to our plaza and said, “We really like this, can you design something similar in another area?” I was puzzled as to why I wasn’t chosen to design when they were so pleased with our previous endeavor, but at least we got to install the project. The next year I waited for a call, confident in our previous two successes, but only silence from ABC. I finally contacted one of their employees and asked for the scoop. ABC had left the young architect and me behind and hired a big name architectural firm from out of town to not only design, but to also install their next phase. I was devastated for more than one reason—not only had I been snubbed, but I had worked with the firm before and knew of their ineptitude. Of course I could not relay that information to ABC, as it would appear tainted by my own obvious motivations.

“Hard to believe we paid $27,000 for just the plans, and they won’t even come back to finish them.” Happily, the big-name firm, true to form, bumbled the first phase of their plan and were finally sent back home. We came in to repair the damage and take over the next phase. I was griping about the inaccuracies of the plan that we were trying to follow, and an ABC supervisor dropped a bombshell on me. “Hard to believe we paid $27,000 for just the plans, and they won’t even come back to finish them.”

What makes plants grow?

Fertilizers all look the same sometimes. Knowing what is in the fertilizer, and what those components will do for your plants is essential.

in the soil. Calcium, magnesium, and sulfur act as soil amendments.

Most fertilizers will have on the container a list of primary elements, noted as N. P. K. Just as in the element chart that you had to memorize in school.

Fertilizing once a year is never enough. Hard rains can leach out fertilizers quickly, and as plants grow repeated applications are important for continued growth. Please don’t forget, just like us, plants don’t get fat on water!

N stands for nitrogen. This is the element

responsible for vegetative growth, dark green color, and helps break down organic materials.

P

is for Phosphorus. This element stimulates root growth, aids in blooming, and helps your plants get winter-hardy.

K

is for Potassium. Also known for increasing plant hardiness, vigor, and improves the quality of fruits. There are also secondary elements. All of these aid your primary elements to work

Every level of hair has an undertone.

by Katie Davis

Can color from a box give me

Beyoncé’s locks?

True black has a blue undertone, the darkest brown has an undertone of mahogany or red-violet, medium brown has a red undertone, light brown has an orange-red undertone, medium blonde has an orange undertone, light blonde has a yellow undertone, and platinum blonde hair has a pale yellow, almost white undertone. As you lighten hair (whether through permanent color or bleach), you will go through the natural undertones depending on where you want your color to be. If I put bleach on a woman’s natural dark brown hair and she wants to be a medium blonde, I have to watch that hair go through the stages of undertones until I get to the level I need. So I have to let that bleach sit on and take her hair through red, red-orange, and orange, which I can literally see as it processes. When I check someone’s foils while they are processing, I’m literally looking to see what stage their hair is at–since every person’s hair pulls more or less of that specific tone.

There is a very complicated process to lightening hair and it really can’t be done well with a box color. Beyonce’s hair is a beautiful blonde, but in order for her to get that color, we’d have to go through the same steps as I listed out above. That kind of care, attention, and knowledge can only come from a real, certified, professional hairdresser who can formulate for exactly what you have on your head since every single person’s color history, hair texture, and desired result is different. Please keep this in mind the next time you find yourself looking at a “box” of color! Katie has been in the beauty industry for more than 20 years. Everybody needs a PALat home or away! by Tina Woods

It’s great that many of our seniors live independently, but what happens if they should fall, become ill or need assistance? The Dietert Center’s PAL is here to help, 24/7. Our PAL Personal Alert Link—emergency response systems provide peace of mind for anyone living alone. The home systems consist of a small, water-proof help button that is worn around the neck or wrist. A press of the button summons an operator, any time of the day or night, who determines what assistance is needed. There’s also a home system whose button automatically activates when a fall has occurred. We also offer the PAL Mobile which works anywhere there is cell phone service! This PAL allows the user to speak directly into the device to talk with the operator, wherever they may need help, even if away from home or traveling. The PAL Mobile automatically activates if a fall is detected and locates the user via GPS.

Did you know the last census data shows that 29% of Kerr County residents live alone—and 53% of those are age 65 or older?

Unlike other emergency response systems, friendly Dietert staff install the PAL of your choice and show you how to use it, plus provide on-going service or support. There’s no equipment to buy or long-term contracts. Dietert has installed more than 200 PALS throughout Kerr County. Call us at (830) 792-4044 and ensure your peace of mind today! Tina Woods is the Dietert Center’s Executive Director. Contact her at (830) 792-4044, ext. 247, or visit the Center’s website: www.dietertcenter.org. PRMC Volunteer Auxiliary

Auxiliary dollars helping nursing scholars

by Judy Jones-Amason

The PRMC Auxiliary contributes to a healing environment that promotes exceptional

compassionate, patient-centered care. In addition, through fundraising efforts, Volunteers provide money for hospital equipment and nursing scholarships. Throughout the year, vendors come on-site to sell scrubs, fashion jewelry, etc., with the Volunteers providing assistance and the Auxiliary receiving a percentage of the sales. However, on a daily basis, the Hospital Gift Shop is the largest, single source of fundraising. Co-managers Gaye Avery and Cheryl Collier have created an attractive, trendy shop appealing to visitors, patients, and staff. PRMC set a goal for 80% of its nurses to obtain a Bachelor of Science Degree (BSN) by 2020. The Auxiliary Board of Directors thought this worthy and in July, 2015, the Scholarship Committee, headed by Lynda DeMasco, awarded 16 scholarships for a total of $24,000 to the PRMC Nursing Staff. Judy is the Volunteer Coordinator and Patient Representative for PRMC. She is a 28 year PRMC employee and was awarded the Duan Packard “Employee of the Year” Award for 2012 by PRMC. H

ave you noticed yourself becoming increasingly forgetful? Do you wonder what can be done to improve your memory and protect brain function for years to come? Several factors contribute to memory loss including nutritional intake, free radical production from alcohol, smoking, stress and heavy metal accumulation, and genetic predisposition.

Protect Your Memories by Dr. Leigh Ann Grasso, RPh & Dr. Melissa Hartman, RPh

A balanced diet is essential to maintaining healthy brain function including foods rich in antioxidants and vitamins A, C, and E. If you still find yourself forgetting the little things or simply want to protect your brain, there are several supplements that can aid memory preservation.

Ginkgo biloba is a Chinese herb that increases blood

flow through the body including the brain, which has a positive effect on memory function. Ginkgo biloba also has both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that protect cell membranes and regulate neurotransmitter function. However, those currently on blood thinners such as daily aspirin therapy, clopidogrel (Plavix) and warfarin (Coumadin) should not take ginkgo biloba.

Omega-3 fatty acids have long been used to reduce the risk of heart disease and strokes. The omega-3 in the brain, DHA, is found in the fatty membranes that surround the nerve cells. DHA stimulates the growth of the branches that connect one brain cell to another,

creating the basis for the brain’s ability to process, store, and retrieve information.

Huperzine A is the most recent supplement used to combat memory loss with a possible link to preventing Alzheimer’s disease. Huperzine A has been found to inhibit the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, preventing the breakdown of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter important for maintaining mental function. In addition to dietary intake and supplemental therapy, it is important to stimulate your brain with daily activities such as reading, crosswords, and Sudoku. As the old adage goes, “If you don’t use it, you lose it!” Annie’s Apothecary carries all of the above supplements, including Xymogen’s MemorAll™ and Omega-3s.

Dr. Leigh Ann Grasso, RPh, owner of Annie’s Apothecary and Boerne compounding pharmacist, earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Texas College of Pharmacy in 2004. Annie’s Apothecary originally opened in 2007 to serve the patients and pets of the Hill Country. Grief is not a disorder, a disease or a sign of weakness. It is an emotional, physical and spiritual necessity, the price you pay for love. The only cure for grief is to grieve. - Earl Grollman

eath of a loved one is difficult for adults, even though we have an understanding of life and death.

Many don’t go through the grieving process, but keep it bottled up inside—perhaps not knowing how to grieve or even afraid to grieve. So imagine what losing a loved one is like for kids. Their young minds and hearts go through many emotions which they may not understand or know how to process. Often they don’t get the help they need to grieve, heal, grow and lead a more fulfilling life. Now there is a place to turn to—Bridging the Gap—a support group sponsored by Peterson Hospice, free of charge. A place to share their experience, strength, hope, and tears. During the program, kids are given the opportunity to recognize and express their feelings, build self-esteem through validation, and receive guidance as they adapt to the changes in their family. In addition, they develop skills to deal with loss that can be used the rest of their lives. Kids’ group sessions are accompanied by a parents’ group to help you, the parent, better understand what your child is going through. Before enrolling, families must register and attend an orientation with the children’s bereavement coordinator. We invite you to call Rhonda Richter at Peterson Hospice at 830258-7401 or email her at RRichter@PetersonRMC.com. Space is limited, so please sign up now.
