Dear Friends and Neighbors, “Every leaf speaks bliss to me, fluttering from the autumn tree.” - Emily Bronte My fondest memories are of fall. Being somewhat of a loner, as a kid I spent time buried in books or nature. They were sort of the same—taking me someplace magical— especially autumn. Ah, autumn. Finally. That seemingly never-ending nasty East Texas heat with its suffocating humidity was gone. Replaced with cooler sunny days, chilly nights, and a blissful crispness. The long walk home from Maydelle’s old rock schoolhouse suddenly became an adventure as I relished every step in the invigorating autumn air. I recall skipping along that asphalt country road, crossing the highway, (there wasn’t even a caution light then) over the railroad tracks, up the hill and then down the other side. As I walked along, I reveled in the swaying of the tall pines and the golden leaves of the oaks swirling through the air. Every gust of wind stirred my emotions and the swooshing sound of the trees was music to my ears. At the end of that walk was our little white house, set back off that winding country road. When I wasn’t playing in the falling leaves of the mighty oaks, my favorite thing was to bundle up in the porch swing with a pillow and soft quilt. I would lie there for what may have been hours; cuddled under my granny’s hand-made quilt, swing swaying back and forth, watching the clouds shape-shift into everything imaginable, and loving those gusts of autumn wind on my face. Autumn is still magical to me and as much as I love our Hill Country, when I know a real autumn is happening, I long to be there. Warm Regards,
inside

Minding Your Own
BUSINESS If you’re considering starting your own
business, you need to consult with various professionals. Lawyers and accountants should be at the top of your list. When forming a business entity, there are three primary concerns you need to take into consideration. The first issue is the tax consequences associated with the business structure you choose, the second issue concerns both your personal exposure to liability originating from the business, and the third issue is related to what I call portability. Tax consequences of your business can be directly related to how you structure the business. The most common type of business and the most economical to form for the small entrepreneur is a “sole proprietorship.” If you have done nothing to formally organize a business, then, you are most likely a “sole proprietorship.” This type of business is one that is informally owned by one individual. If the business is informally owned by more than one individual, then, the business is usually classified as a “partnership.” With a sole proprietorship and partnership, all of the income and losses are passed on directly to each individual owner in the proportion of their ownership interests. The business pays no income taxes of its own. Except for a “not for profit” business, a formally organized business may be subject to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) “corporate” income tax. Other than distributions (dividends), profits are distributed to the shareholders (owners) and the owners are not subject to a “corporate” tax. There are taxing issues other than federal tax which are under the authority of the IRS. The State of Texas does not have a corporate income tax or an individual income tax, but does collect a gross receipts
tax or sometimes referred to as a margin tax. The Texas gross receipts tax does not apply to all businesses and not to any businesses grossing less than $300,000.00 per year. If your business will gross over $300,000.00 a year, you should consult with an accountant or a lawyer about the application of this tax to your business. With an informal business entity, like a sole proprietorship or partnership, the owners run a risk of being held personally responsible for incidents or losses that occur in the business. Individuals can overcome or limit this risk by forming a business entity through the Texas Secretary of State. Such formal organizations are generally known as corporations, limited liability companies, and limited partnerships. Although providing personal liability protection, a corporation is not necessarily taxed as a corporation. The IRS is very liberal in allowing owners to select how the business will be taxed either as a pass-through entity or under the IRS corporate tax structure. With a pass-through entity, the profits and losses are passed on to the partners, owners, or shareholders to be included in their individual income tax returns. One unique benefit of a formally, organized business entity is its portability. The net worth of the corporation, for instance, may be transferred quickly and easily with issuance of and assignment of shares of stock. An individual with interest in a limited liability company can likewise easily and formally assign his or her whole interest in the company with one piece of paper. Because a formally organized business entity’s assets and liabilities are already formally separated from the owners by legal documents of record, it creates a better environment for the sale of that interest to
third parties or even other partners, owners or shareholders. If you’re serious about your business and its success, I recommend you contact the appropriate professionals for advice in the areas that I have described. You should specifically be concerned about personal liability and those liabilities associated with penalties and interest for not conducting business in accordance with local, state, and federal laws. Chef Jan meet
Our New European Chef
Chef Jan Whittle,
originally from the Dorset-Devonshire-Cornwall region of England, is a classically-trained chef who worked for many years in Michelin-type restaurants in France. As a member of the Royal Navy, he was assigned to the Royal Yacht, preparing meals for the Queen, the royal family and their guests. Chef Jan also had his own business—much like those we see on TV today—teaching restaurants how to prepare food in the classical manner—from scratch, using fresh ingredients instead of canned, frozen, and prepackaged mixes. He came to the United States after meeting his American-born wife and has now decided to settle in Kerrville. How fortunate we are to have him! Chef Jan is shaking things up, making many changes. He will be keeping some of your old favorites, updating them, and adding fresh new dishes as we go along. Chef Jan is training our kitchen staff in classical cooking to bring back the quality you want and deserve when you dine with us. Chef Jan has already changed our Wednesday Pasta Night to an authentic Italian Night, much more than pasta. Thursday nights, we travel Around the World, featuring cuisine from a different country each week.

Let’s play dress-up and eat dessert first at
QueenB’s tearoom
Remember when playing dress-up was one of your favorite things to do?
by Diane Ferrell
Put on mama’s prettiest high-heels, her red lipstick—maybe not so artistically applied—and if there were fashionable hats in the house, you simply had to have one of those. And then, of course, prance around the house. Oh, yes, I remember the prancing. Sure, now you’re all grown up and sophisticated, but you’re never too old to play dress-up. So grab your girlfriends, high-heels, and red lipstick—this time coloring inside the lines—and head for Queen B’s Tearoom for a few hours. If you don’t have hats (and who does?), at Queen B’s you’ll find an assortment of them, not to mention a few fur wraps and feather boas. They hang on the wall in every room and there’s even a trunk-full upstairs to rummage though. They’re there for the wearing, so help yourself. I promise you’ll feel like prancing all over again.
a
Everyone made a dash for the delectable little dainties—in the most lady-like way, of course.
10 │Sept-Oct 2012 │ KCP
Queen B’s sits behind a white picket fence on Highway 27, just past the Y in Ingram. As you open the cottage door and hear the tinkling of little bells hanging from it, you’ll instantly forget the Texas heat and all your cares. This adventure is an escape into another world for a few hours. You’re surrounded by all the things you’d expect in an English tearoom—white lacy curtains, tables set with pretty fresh flowers, and all the accoutrements for enjoying high tea. Delicate china— cups, saucers and teapots—and vintage crystal fill every nook and cranny. Everything that isn’t nailed down is for sale, so plan on doing a little shopping, too.
Sharon Weaver, Anne Schneider, Patti Whiteside, and Skye Alexander delight their inner child with an afternoon of dress-up at Queen B’s.
If the idyllic setting isn’t enough to totally draw you in, being greeted with a British accent certainly will. Bridget Dale’s husband John, a true English gentleman, or Bridget’s sweet sister Lynn, are usually on hand to greet and serve you. If you’re lucky enough to have Bridget emerge from the kitchen, you’re in for an extra treat. She is what we Southerners call a hoot. Preparing scrumptious dishes is not her only talent—her sense of wit is equally delightful!
Playing dress-up isn’t required at Queen B’s, but it certainly adds to the entertainment value. I’m told taking a bottle—or 3—of wine also increases the entertainment value of your visit. But if that’s not your cup of tea, no worries! You can relax and enjoy a pot of one of the assorted fine British teas Bridget buys in England every year. Or, as this Southerner prefers, order it iced. So go ahead. Call your BFFs, make a reservation, and get silly. And remember two things—nobody is the boss of you anymore and life is short, so you can eat dessert first. Oh, and prance. Don’t forget to prance. For details, see Queen B’s ad on page 23.
a
Queen B—Bridget Dale—and me.
And you’re sure to love the food—chilled and hot soups, sandwiches, salads, quiches, and, of course, an assortment of delectable little dainties. My favorite is Bridget’s homemade scone—split and filled with the finest clotted cream (imported from England, of course) and premium strawberry jam, filling every bite with whole pieces of strawberry. A well-designed structure, high ceilings, tasteful decor, beautiful product displays, and a refined, inviting ambiance give you the first clues that Celia’s Closet is indeed a special store. The proof comes when you receive a warm, personal greeting and an offer to help you find something truly unique. A Childhood Wish Granted
You might not have realized that Celia’s Closet changed ownership last year. “It’s the fulfillment of a childhood dream,” says Kristen Sullivan, who purchased Celia’s Closet in August of 2011. “My grandmother and Celia Pound were friends. When I was nine years old, I visited Celia’s store for the first time. I remember falling in love with the Merle Norman products and with the store itself.” Her enthusiasm stayed with her throughout her childhood. She helped out at the store every other Saturday from the time she was fourteen, and took a part-time position while she completed high school and college.
You'll feel right at home with one of these smiling faces helping you. From left to right Beverly Drimmel, Susie Dietzel, Kristen Sullivan, Pam Blommers and Christian Domingues. mentioned an interest in selling. “Less than a month later, I was the store’s new owner.”
After graduating from Schreiner University, Kristen accepted a job in Austin. She and her precious young son returned to Kerrville regularly to visit family. One of those visits was particularly compelling.
“I’m so lucky,” Kristen says of the opportunity. “The transition was so easy, because I kept all the same well-trained employees, and we knew each other from my time working in the store through the years. We’re all like family.”
“We were sitting on the porch, talking about the future,” she recalls. “I said, ‘I wish Celia would sell me the store.’ ” Her grandmother told her Celia had recently
Occasionally customers ask what Celia’s role with the store is now that ownership has changed hands. “Celia loves the store and will continue to mentor me and she’ll
be around to answer any questions I might have,” Kristen says. “I’m the owner now, but the store will always be Celia’s baby.” Many responsibilities come with being the owner of a successful retail business. Kristen arrives early to do most of the accounting, payroll, and paperwork before the store opens. Once the store opens, though, it’s all about the customers, and she’s on the floor with them as much as possible. Continue to page 31

The promise of the changing
season always excites me—the anticipation of cooler nights and warm days. With another hot, dry summer behind us, the hope of rain is enough to get even a city slicker back into the garden! Now is the time to get those cool weather vegetables in the ground. Cabbage, broccoli, and salad greens are good choices. Most veggies require full sun to thrive—6-8 hours a day. Lettuce can get by on a little less—4-6 hours will suffice. So it’s important to check the sunlight before you plant. I always look forward to the migration of the butterflies during the first or second cold
front, when they head back to parts south. There are many butterfly plants that will lure them into your garden. Milk weed, buddleia, lantana, yarrow, asters, mint marigold, and bee balm are among great fall bloomers with sweet nectar to sustain them during the long journey. Another exciting prospect for fall is the arrival of those wonderful winter annuals. There is something about pansies, and violas that just make you smile. Full sun makes these plants very happy, too.
Fall is the best time to plant trees and shrubs. This gives them the time needed to get established before next year’s heat hits. Be sure to use a root stimulator when planting trees and shrubs. As with all plants, make sure you keep them adequately watered.
These steps will assure they’re strong and established before facing next summer’s heat. Enriching Lifestyles by Anne Schneider
Stepping Stone to Success They
possess very little when they arrive but leave with much more. This is typical of residents at Enhanced Horizons, a transitional living community in Ingram originating from Gary Priour’s Hill Country Youth Ranch. Enhanced Horizon’s Transition Internship Employment Specialist Morgan (Syfert) Key explains, “They come to us from all walks of life— some having aged out of foster care, some from at risk situations, and some with no home to call their own.”
Lots to Learn
The four year-old program for young adults and singlemothers ages 18 to 24 has been home to 84 residents from fourteen Texas counties. “Our goal is to make Enhanced Horizons as much like real life as possible, something that’s not always comfortable—or popular—with our residents,” adds Key with a smile. “But when they leave us they’ll have the tools they need to succeed.” Key sounds like a tough task-master and a good teacher. “We work on the basics—housekeeping and laundry, grocery shopping and cooking—training our residents for life skills most of us take for granted.”
“Our goal is to make Enhanced Horizons as much like real life as possible . . . when they leave us they have the tools to succeed.” 18 │ Sept-Oct 2012 │ KCP
Key points out that while Enhanced Horizons does help its residents file for Medicaid, Food Stamps, and SSI, “Ultimately we want to defeat the welfare mentality. We want our residents to learn to provide for themselves.” To support this goal, Enhanced Horizons assists residents who never graduated from high school with earning their GED or receiving their high school diploma depending upon the specific desire of each eligible resident. Single mothers receive parenting classes and job interview skills are taught to all residents.
Help is Not a One-Way Street
There is no charge for the Enhanced Horizons program. But once residents secure a job, they begin paying $100 as a token contribution to help cover some of the many benefits they are receiving— including living at the facility, sharing utilities, getting transportation to work, shopping, appointments, or school, and participating in the many EH activities. All residents contribute to cleaning and cooking. They learn the give and take of living like a family. The local community also benefits from Enhanced Horizons goals. “We believe these young people need to feel a part of and have a stake in the community where they live. Volunteer opportunities help them give back to the community,” according to Key. The City of Ingram benefitted from Enhanced Horizons efforts with landscaping maintenance at the intersection of Highways 27 and 39. Another beneficiary of Enhanced Horizons volunteers’ work is Kerrville’s Salvation Army CROC center. And as an added bonus for everyone, volunteer positions can lead to employment.
Job Shadowing
Enhanced Horizons want locals to consider providing its residents with job shadowing. Key elaborates, “We need companies and individuals willing to introduce new areas of interest for job possibilities to our residents—to train them, to offer them internships. The goal of such community involvement is to build relationships that allow these young adults to make the connections they need for success.” The logic is if residents receive help now, they’ll become independent later.
Hopes and Dreams
Most Enhanced Horizons residents come from broken families—some were given up by parents who could not take care of them, others were abused. “We want them to know they are safe now and loved; that they will be successful,” suggests Key. For single-mother residents who work a minimum number of hours to qualify for the child care service, Enhanced Horizons
provides assistance in locating lower cost day care for their children. Waiting for available funding, there are plans for an onsite children’s playground as well as an on-campus adult recreational center that will offer residents a chance to gather for movies and playing pool. Key explains, “We want to provide residents with an alternative to their previous ways of recreation and the situations that led them to with their old acquaintances.”
How to Help
Prompted for a wish list, Key offered the following to those who want to assist Enhanced Horizons’ provision of housing and services for 15 to 20 residents at a time: • volunteer opportunities for residents • mentors • job shadowing—introductions, training, internship • employment • support of fundraisers—a gala dinner is planned for the future • financial donations—contributions may be made to the Evelyn Henry Fund; a special fund created to support EH youth and provide startup expenses for them during their transition to adulthood (first work clothes, medical appointments, etc.) Key concludes, “We want our residents to get over the idea this residential living is a sign of failure—we want them to know that Enhanced Horizons can be a stepping stone to success.” Visit Enhanced Horizons website at www.enhancedhorizons.org for more information. Applications for Enhanced Horizons are available at the website or contact Pam Wood at (830)367-4330 or educationEH@youth-ranch.org Anne Schneider is a Kerrville writer and artist. get caught the Loop in
by Kathleen Cook
A
s you drive west of Ingram on Highway 39 you’ll see a yellow sign that marks the entrance to Old Ingram Loop. This half-mile road meanders alongside the Guadalupe River and leads into the heart of a unique shopping experience. In “The Loop” you’ll meet artists in their studios and see their works in progress. You’ll discover antique furniture stores, a shop that features handcrafted Western furniture, jewelry, and metalwork, and another that sells museum-quality décor, clothing, and art from Mexico, Central, and South America. The workshop of an internationally famous silversmith is here, too. Nearby are a vintage clothing store, a shop that sells custom lamps and shades, the studio of a portrait photographer, and consignment and resale shops. And at the beginning or end of your journey you can enjoy tasty food and beverages at a log cabin café.
The Loop’s Colorful History
In the 1800s, this little stretch of land was a stagecoach stop on the Wells Fargo line. Cattle drives to the north crossed the Guadalupe River here and the area served as a gateway for pioneers who settled Kerr County after the Civil War. The last of the Comanche Indian raids took place nearby and the Texas Rangers were here, too. The 20 │ Sept-Oct 2012 │ KCP
historical marker states that in 1879 the Rev. John C. W. Ingram moved here from California, bought a tract of land, and established a store that became the nucleus of the original town. Later, a pharmacy, doctor’s office, telephone switchboard, grocery store, barbershop, soda fountain, and post office were added. In 1932, after a flood swamped Ingram, residents decided to move to higher ground and reestablished the town in its present location––the rock buildings you see along Highway 27. Between the 1930s and the 1970s, businesses in Old Ingram Loop came and went. Bars, little convenience stores, and a gas station or two had their day here. Once the “wild and wooly” part of town, it saw brawls, cedar-chopping contests, ax fights, and ladies of the evening. Eventually, the old buildings were abandoned and decay set in.
A Charming Village
In 1972, artist Lavinia Schlabach came from Refugio to study at the Hill Country Arts Foundation. She and her husband Monroe bought several dilapidated properties in The Loop, planning to establish an art colony. Their vision set a new tone, and over the years many artists and specialty businesses found their way to this little village. Other properties in The Loop were purchased and upgraded. Each brings its own special
personality to the rich ambiance visitors feel as they wander this historic street. The Loop’s charm lies in its individualism and unpredictability. Although several “anchor” stores are open daily, and most shops keep to their posted opening days and times, sometimes businesses close when their owners travel or feel that sudden urge to go fishin’. There is always something to see on The Loop and this little detour off Highway 39 is well worth the journey.

When people hear that I’m a designer,
the first question is, “What style do you like to work in?” Since I love so many styles, it’s hard to choose a favorite.
What I really love to do is make a home a reflection of the people who live there, regardless of sticking to a style. When your home has your character and personality, it can’t help but draw you in, as well as your guests. The second question then becomes, “Well how do you do that?” It’s much simpler than you might think. Here are a few tips that I use when working with a client. An easy way to find out what colors and style to use in your home is to look in your closet. The colors and styles of your clothes should reflect what makes you feel good. These are the same colors and styles you might want to use in your home.
Think of your big pieces of furniture as the ensemble, and pillows, lamps and decorative pieces as the accessories. Pay attention to the way you put colors together and if your accessories are classic, trendy or eclectic. The important thing to remember is to have fun with it!

Also, note how you put an outfit together—do you wear all monochromatic colors or do you wear a basic and dress it up with bright, funky accessories? Maybe you like to wear a lot of patterns in one outfit or are more conservative. If you can pinpoint a certain style to the way you dress, implement that into decorating your home.

Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall, I’m My Mother After All by Ode Young, MD and Kathy Dietert, RN, BSN
H
ave you ever walked by a mirror and wonder when you became your mother? Over time, cumulative effects of collagen and moisture loss, sun exposure and acne affect our skin’s youthful appearance and texture. There is a way to turn back time without going under the knife. Fractional skin resurfacing helps restore your skin’s beauty by treating mild to moderate wrinkles, red and brown spots, and textural irregularities thus improving skin tone, texture, and color.
How does Matrix RF™ fractional skin resurfacing work?
The Matrix RF places 61 tiny beams of heat into the skin with each pulse. The RF energy induces a skin injury over the region of the matrix spots with an accelerated healing process supported by the non-affected tissue surrounding the matrix spots. This way, the treatment can produce much improved color and texture of your skin with significantly less recovery time than traditional C02 full ablative laser resurfacing. Posttreatment, you’ll notice increased levels of beneficial collagen and new healthy skin cells. Mild to moderate wrinkles and superficial skin discolorations are reduced, and the texture of your skin becomes smoother and more elastic. Your motherlike appearance will disappear with each treatment.
How is Fractional Ablative Different From Traditional Ablative?
Traditional ablative resurfacing heats and removes the complete surface of the skin resulting in a longer recovery period. Fractional technology reaches deeper into the skin, but covers the skin area in patterns of dots instead of a solid area. Though CO2 ablative (full skin removal) laser resurfacing has been the gold standard for non-surgical facial skin rejuvenation for more than ten years, it has limitations that include a prolonged recovery period (weeks), hypopigmentation (unwanted lightening of skin color), and the potential for infection that can lead to scarring. Fractional technology avoids all of these limitations. 24│ Sept-Oct 2012 │ KCP
What results can you expect?
Expect a noticeable reduction of fine lines, wrinkles and acne and other scarring. In addition, patients will see an improvement in texture and skin laxity. On average, most results appear over a period of three to six months, but some patients notice results immediately after treatment.
What happens after Matrix RF™ Laser Skin Resurfacing?
Most people have mild redness and swelling for a few hours after the treatment. You may apply make-up to the treated area after the procedure. Results will develop over time and with subsequent treatments. Full results can be appreciated three to six months following the last treatment. Maintenance treatments may be necessary to maintain the results.
Can this be combined with other treatments? The Matrix RF™ may be combined with many other cosmetic treatments in our office such as Photorejuvenation, Tissue Tightening Lasers, BOTOX® Cosmetic and injectable fillers. Many patients choose to undergo combination treatments in order to achieve the maximum aesthetic result. To learn more about Matrix RF, go to www.matrixskin.com. Kathy Dietert, RN, BSN, has been a nurse for over thirty years with an extensive background in aesthetic medicine. Ode Young, MD, has been a physician for over twenty years with a concentration in aesthetic medicine for the past six years. Exceptional Customer Service
This customer-centered philosophy made a big impact on shopper Nicki Carlson of Kerrville. “I went in for the first time recently,” she says. “It was so much fun! I couldn’t believe the shopping experience. They were so nice and helpful. It was like having my own personal shopper.” Deanne Foley, a Kerrville teacher, agrees. “I love Celia’s Closet. The service is great, and they’re so friendly. I have a hard time making decisions on what to buy, and they’re very good at giving honest opinions about what looks good and what’s not as flattering. I use Merle Norman products, and sometimes I have to send my husband in to pick something up for me. They’re so kind to him and never make him feel out of place when he goes in.”
Even the best clothing can be improved with the right undergarments. Kristen feels that in many sectors customer service is becoming a bit of a lost art. “We want to be the exception and be exceptional. We have a wonderful staff. For example, Susie Dietzel, the store’s buyer, has been with Celia’s Closet for over twenty years. She is great at seeing what you’re wearing now and figuring out what you might like to wear and what undergarments would work best for you.”
They’ve Got You Covered, from Head to Toe
Customer service is important, but so is the availability of exciting products––and Celia’s Closet has them in abundance. A full-service Merle Norman Cosmetics studio sits at the front of the store. If you’re an established Merle Norman customer or just considering using the skin care line, you’ll love the complimentary consultations from expert beauty advisers. Or try other services which include foundation checks, color panels, and personalized skin care assessments. The staff will support and help you find the right shade of makeup to make you look your best. They also offer makeup artistry
sessions for formal occasions and weddings, including pre-wedding selection and makeup, and wedding day application. Introducing your daughters, granddaughters, and great-granddaughters to the benefits of proper skin care is a fun experience for the staff as well as for you. The sooner these young ladies begin, the longer their youthful looks will last. You’ll find everything you need for a complete ensemble in this one location, whether it’s for a festive occasion, work, or a casual weekend. “I love their clothes,” says Deanne Foley. “I can always find something a little different and memorable there.”
Kristen with Cynthia Moran.
Kristen carries a variety of brands to suit every taste. Joseph Ribkoff and Frank Lyman are some favorites. Even the best clothing can be improved with the right undergarments. Customers especially like the Spanx and Wacoal brands. The staff at Celia’s Closet is trained to help you find what you need to make the best of your individual shape. Celia’s Closet offers several brands of footwear as well, including European comfort shoes like Dansko and Naot. Kristen recently discovered an orthopedic flipflop called Glitterflops, which are made from Memory Foam and in step with the fashionable bling-type flops. Top off your attire with ever-popular Brighton accessories, handbags, wallets, sunglasses, and jewelry from the huge selection at Celia’s Closet, which includes a large selection of charms. And if you’re looking for bargains, take a peek at the sale area in the back behind the large mirror. “Whoever you are, we have something for you,” Kristen says. “We carry a wide range, from small sizes to plus sizes up to 1X. Our customers come in every age too, so there really is something for everyone.”
Looking Ahead
When you have something that works, build on that success. “Celia had such a wonderful thing going that change was not necessary,” Kristen says. “It’s about enhancing what’s already working. I’m also always looking to find new product lines and designers. It’s about adding, not changing.” Merle Norman has annual conventions with celebrity makeup artists in different locations each year. The staff takes training to keep up-to-date with the products and makeup artistry. “We’ll evolve as we go, but our goal will always be to give you an unforgettable and wonderful shopping experience,” Kristen promises. Celia’s Closet is located at 221 Thompson Drive and is open Monday through Friday from 9:30 to 5:30 and Saturdays from 10:00 to 1:00. Call them at 830.257.8187 or check them out online at www.celiascloset.com. Charlotte Huff is a blogger and editor who is working on her first novel.

Title Talk by Diane Green
Understanding
Escrow Accounts
For Taxes and Insurance Most likely,
the last time you bought a home or piece of property, you sat at a closing table with an Escrow Officer and a stack of documents to sign. One important document was the HUD1 settlement statement, detailing your final closing costs. Each line of the HUD-1 is numbered. Section 1000 of this statement includes reserves deposited with the lender. It also itemizes escrow funds collected by the lender from the borrower for such things as hazard insurance and property taxes. You were probably required to deposit real estate taxes and insurance premiums into an escrow account. An escrow account ensures that the taxes and insurance will be paid on time, which protects the lender from tax liens and uninsured losses that the borrower can’t repay. The federal Real Estate Settlement Act limits the amount lenders can require in escrow to a maximum of two months’ payments. Escrow assessments and adjustments are generally made annually. The amount in the escrow account varies during the year due to tax assessments and insurance premium adjustments. The lender typically will cover any shortfalls until it can adjust your monthly payment to make up for tax hikes and premium increases. Your monthly mortgage payment will fluctuate from year to year, even on long-term, fixedrate loans. Some lenders allow you to pay your own property taxes and insurance premiums, especially if your loan-to-value ratio is below 80 percent. Once an escrow requirement is in place, it can be difficult to persuade a lender to cancel it. If your loan is sold, as is common, and there is nothing in the lending agreement that provides for cancellation of the escrow requirement, you’ll have to live with the decision of your new mortgage servicer.
Diane Green moved to Kerrville in 1972 with husband, Bob, and immediately began her title insurance career at Kerr County Abstract & Title Co. Diane and Bob feel grateful to have raised their family in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. This is Diane’s 40th year in the title business. She is the owner of Kerr County Abstract. Got Squirrels?
Oh, those unwanted guests! Squirrels sure can put a damper on
your bird feeding experience. You have tried everything from greasing the pole to trapping them. However, it is purely simple to foil these bushy tailed guys if you follow a few simple rules.
New & Upcycled – Up to Size 8
Step One: Pole Systems. The very first thing to know about
415-C Clay Street @ Depot Square, Kerrville 792-3764 Entrance on the side
squirrels is the 5-7-9 rule. They can jump up 5 feet, across 7 feet and down 9 feet. Strategically place your feeders accordingly. Hanging your feeders from a pole system with the top of a stove pipe baffle 5 feet high is the easiest. If squirrels are still getting on the feeders, watch them and see how they are doing it. They’re probably launching from the house or a tree and you may need to move your pole systems.
Step Two: Squirrel-Proof Feeders. I’m sure some of you are
saying, yeah right, no such thing! But there really is. It is a weight activated feeder. You need to find one that is made long enough that a squirrel can’t reach the food by hanging by its hind legs. When a squirrel does get on the feeder his weight will prevent him from getting to the food ports. These are great feeders for hanging in a tree line. You can also put a cage around your tube style feeder. This allows the birds to fly in but keeps squirrels out.

or weight activated feeder, switch your seed to Safflower. Squirrels, raccoons, house sparrows, grackles and starlings do not like Safflower. The trick to feeding Safflower is you have to serve only Safflower. Cardinals, titmice, chickadees and house finch love Safflower seed. They just have to get used to it being their only source of food.
There you have it, squirrel warriors. There really is a way to keep them at bay.

LANDSCAPING AND GARDENING by Zack Derese
The Outdoor Guy
Planning ahead will ensure your outdoor spaces will be ready How many times have you heard “If you don’t like the weather in Texas, just wait 5 minutes.”? Have you ever planned an event only to have the first rain in months fall on your picnic? And not just a sprinkle, but a Sidney Baker floodin’, 3 inches per hour typhoon that the Hill Country is famous for. Or have you sat on your porch with the sun shining and watched your neighbor getting rain? Our weather patterns can go from one extreme to the other, with no predicting when or how. We have gone from record-breaking rains in 2007 to one of the driest 2 year spans in our history. Extreme weather calls for extremely good landscape planning. This ain’t Houston, honey, so you may have to plant your St. Augustine grass and azaleas somewhere else.
“If you aim at nothing, you will hit it every time”
Planning ahead is essential in all areas of life—from investing and financial matters to building a home, and of course providing the perfect setting for that home. You would never begin building a house without a detailed set of plans, yet many people wait until the building is finished and suddenly notice all that dirt out there. Begin your
landscape design along with site planning for your house. If you have a local architect, ask them to recommend a landscape designer that they are comfortable working with.
Landscape remodel
Most of you reading this column already have a home and may think you don’t need
a landscape plan. If your existing landscaping is looking a little worse for the wear, you may consider a landscape remodel or at least a renewed plant scheme with drought tolerant plants. Don’t fall into the trap of picking out whatever looks good at the moment, bringing it home and throwing it in the ground. This is where a landscape designer is valuable—rethinking, re-designing, and reviving problem areas. Don’t start work until you have a complete plan; otherwise the end result will look hodge-podge and pieced together. Even if you can only do one phase at a time, start with the end in mind.
What can I do now?
• Soil amendments, such as a compost soil mix. • SDI (Subsurface Drip Irrigation) • Use native & drought tolerant plants. • Identify an area that could be converted into a xeriscaped shrub bed. • Water deeply and let your landscape dry out between waterings. Doing so will create deeper root systems and more drought resistance.
Zack Derese has deep roots in Kerrville. As owner of Kerrville Landscaping, Inc., he has been in the landscape business for over 15 years. He is a Landscape Designer, holds an Irrigation License (LI#9453), a Backflow Prevention License (BPAT #10754), is NCMA certified for Segmental Retaining Walls, and is a Water Feature Specialist. You can reach him at zack@kerrvillelandscaping.com or call him at 830-377-4861.

It is to feel the mountain slope breeze, to taste the sparkling stream, to glimpse a culture and its traditions sustained for centuries among the Native Americans. River’s Edge Gallery on Water Street now invites you to step into Terpning’s vision of Lakota, Blackfoot, Crow, and other Plains tribes. River’s Edge now features giclees of Terpning’s works—affordable high quality, fine art digital prints.
An extensive retrospective of Terpning’s works at The Autry in Griffith Park, Los Angeles, recently brought together more than eighty masterworks, some never before displayed to the public. Original Howard Terpning oil paintings command top prices at Western auctions. Search for the Renegades, an oil from 1981, recently sold for $1.5 million dollars. Limited edition giclees and lithographs by Terpning often sell out at the publisher as soon as they’re released.
As one of the world’s most acclaimed painters of the American West, Terpning uses historical research, scrupulous attention to detail, and expansive landscape vistas to create engaging stories about life, family, and survival on the Western frontier. “I think it’s important to tell the story of the Plains Indians because their history is our history—part of our heritage,” says the artist. “I feel privileged to be one of their storytellers.” Items from Terpning’s own wide-ranging collection of Indian artifacts often appear in his paintings.
Giclees of Terpning’s works and a book of his paintings, Tribute to the Plains People, are available for sale at River’s Edge Gallery, 832 Water Street, 830-8955184.

Everybody needs a PAL Did you know the latest census data shows that 29% of Kerr County residents live alone—and nearly 11% of those—2,247, are women 65 or older? Almost 5%—930, are men 65 or older. It’s great that so many of our seniors are able to live independently, but what happens if they should fall, or become ill or need emergency assistance? Fortunately, there are options available locally to ensure folks can get help, 24/7, regardless of their age.
that provides peace of mind for anyone living alone, especially elders and their families. The system consists of a small, waterproof help button that is worn around the neck or wrist, plus a call unit that is plugged into your telephone outlet. Once help has been summoned, the operator follows up to ensure you received the assistance you needed. Caring for your
contact lenses
by Shelly Blaker, OD
For the more than 35 million Americans enjoying the convenience of wearing contact lenses, it is important to remember to care for them properly. Following these simple steps and incorporating them into your daily routine will optimize your eye health and extend the life of your contact lens.
Cleanliness is of great importance. Always wash your hands thoroughly with warm water and soap before putting in or removing your lenses. This is to remove any chemicals, dirt, lotion or soaps that may transfer to the contact lens and cause pain and irritation once the contact lens is in your eye. Always clean and disinfect your contact lenses as recommended by the manufacturer and your eye doctor. Different lenses may require
specialized cleansers as wear time can be different between brands. Often overlooked is the regular cleaning of the contact lens storage case, which should be cleaned every time the contact lenses are put into the eye. The storage cases can be cleaned with hot water or a sterile solution and then air dried.
If a contact lens does fall out of your eye, never put it in your mouth (to clean it) and then re-insert it into your eyes. Never rinse contact lenses with plain water…even distilled water can contain micro-organisms that can cause sight-damaging infections.
that are not rated specifically for extended wear. Again, this can increase the chance of an eye infection as well as limit the amount of oxygen the tears are able to carry to your eye.
As always, if any discomfort or problems develop, remove your contact lenses and contact your eye doctor immediately.

Peterson Regional Medical Center is Proud to Welcome Sound Physicians’ Hospitalists to
our Medical Community
Peterson Regional Medical Center welcomes Sound Physicians hospitalists, a new team of physicians who are entirely dedicated to the care of our hospitalized patients. In traditional hospital care, patients are typically visited only once a day, usually in the evening, by their personal physician. With a hospitalist physician, the team provides 24-hour care to patients in concert with primary care providers and specialists from the community. Throughout a hospital stay, hospitalist physicians are available to make timely care decisions throughout the day, rapidly following up on test results, examining response to treatment, and adjusting the treatment as needed. Hospitalists work solely in the hospital, giving them a unique, in-depth knowledge of hospital logistics, departments, specialists, and technologies - resulting in efficient and exceptional patient care. When it ’s time to go home, hopitalists work closely with our patients’ personal physician and medical records to ensure a smooth transition. Sound Physicians’ hospitalists take it upon themselves to be sure their patients resume appropriate care with their personal physician. Peterson Regional Medical Center’s team of hospitalists, Sound Physicians’ joined in June of 2011.

Your Health Care — Who’s in Charge? Health care can be complicated; however, each of us can make health care decisions and diagnoses less complicated by actively participating with our doctor.
How do we do this? 1. Before your doctor visit, write down problems and symptoms, and questions. Take the note with you and review it with your doctor. 2. Keep a current list of your medications, including all over-the-counter medications: (take the list with you to any doctor’s appointment) a. Name of drug b. Dosage and frequency c. Date started d. Name of physician who prescribed e. Date you stopped taking the drug f. Reason you stopped taking the drug g. Allergies to any medications 3. Take your current insurance cards and driver’s license to all doctor or out-patient appointments. 4. Ask your doctor to write down their instructions in regard to medications, diet, exercise, and diagnoses. With all the national debate over a centralized health care record data base, each of us should make a conscious effort to be our own repository for personal medical information. After all, it is our information, as well as our responsibility, and it helps our physicians see the whole picture when we are seeing several specialists.
Keep a simple three ring binder with the following information in sections: 1. Providers a. List of all your doctors, dentist, home health provider, pharmacy, DME Company. Include their telephone numbers and fax numbers. 2. Insurance Information a. Copy of insurance card and driver’s license 3. Medications a. List of current medications 4. Notes from providers a. Your questions for the physician b. Your physician’s instructions to you 5. Lab Reports 6. X-ray Reports 7. Immunization Record Take your three-ring binder with you to every medical visit. When you are having blood work done or x-rays, ask for copies of lab and x-ray reports for you personal health care record. Remember, our health care and medical records are our responsibility.

for Modern Ailments Flax seed carries
one of the biggest nutrient payloads of any plant on the planet. The ancient Egyptians cultivated the flax plant and used it for medicines, fabric, paper, rope, soap, and many other necessities. Today, nutritionists tout the health benefits of this millennia-old botanical for a range of contemporary ills.
Flax seed is high in most B vitamins, magnesium, and manganese. It also has an abundance of fiber, omega 3 fatty acids, and phytochemicals (responsible for color and smell) that include many antioxidants. Additionally, flax seeds contain lignans and alpha linolenic acid. These substances help fight diabetes and cancer, particularly colon and breast cancer. The fatty acids also reduce inflammation in the joints, which causes pain and deterioration. Flax contains more phytoestrogen––which helps to stabilize hormone levels –– than any other plant source; thus it can relieve unpleasant menopause symptoms. Flax also helps with heart disease and strengthens the immune system. Due to their high content of both soluable and insoluable fiber, flax seeds reduce constipation by absorbing water, which softens the stool and allows it to flow through the colon more quickly. Make sure to drink plenty of water, however, or the extra fiber can actually lead to constipation.

Volunteer Coordinator Patient Representative
We’re Proud of Our Junior Volunteers The PRMC Auxiliary The Junior Volunteer Program at Peterson Regional Medical Center was in full sway this summer with enthusiastic young students spending part of their precious summer vacation volunteering time and talents to their community as well as perhaps getting some insight into future healthcare careers.
We
welcomed teenagers from Tivy High School and other Texas high schools who signed on for 7 weeks and who worked under supervision of nurses and staff in many different areas of the hospital and the Ambulatory Care Center. Their bright, smiling faces were welcomed in areas like Rehab Services, Pre Op, and Women’s Services. Some of their tasks included answering phones, greeting patients and families and preparing the treatment area ready for the next patient. Some worked in non-clinical areas such as Facilities Management, performing clerical duties, and one enterprising young man provided music therapy by playing his guitar in the Atrium, the Hospital Cafeteria, and the Acute Rehab Unit. All were most sincerely appreciated by our patients, staff, and visitors.
