Memory Mapping - Mangaluru
Mangalore was the centre of a unique multi-linguistic cultural region called South Canara, the hometown of Tulu-speaking people. The Kadamba dynasty whose capital city was in North Canara maintained independent power over the entire Canara region from the third to sixth centuries.
Karnataka
The Alupa rulers held the area of South Canara from the seventh century until the end of the fourteenth century. The rule was put fully under the Vijayanagar Empire by 1345. South Canara was divided into Mangalore and some areas of Barkur during the period of the Vijayanagara dynasty (1345-1550). There were two governors from Mangalore to Barkur to handle. Dakshina Kannada district is one among the three districts, the State has got in the coastal region and is located in the western belt covering a geographical area of 4861 sq.km. The district has the greatest extent from north to south by 80 km. and from east to west by 96 km. The most conspicuous areas of the very high and very low area of the district are located at 10 and 1,050 meters of contour lines above the mean sea level.

Food & Culture - Mangaluru
Food forms both indoor and outdoor, it is a cultural commodity that can teach one a lot about civilization or environment that gives birth to. eating is the act of communion. Income, exchanging, deceiving, community with society. Looking at a city, we can find that it is not just present but still linked to the past. Everyone perceives it differently but also how spaces are perceived and enriched. People eat while talking, in-car, with friends each with their unique experience in sharing it to another. These make a symbolic aspect of food, along with social and cultural aspects.

Jyothi circle being one of the central nodes of Mangalore in terms of transporation is one of the perfect places to document the food & culture because of the cluster of several casual eateries, fine dining establishments and a few pubs. The intent of the documentation of Jyothi is to understand the workings of the origin of the restaurants and to analyse the sustained success it recieves. On preliminary analysis it can be determined that the food culture is correlated to it’s connectivity and it’s role as a pause point.

The cause for the origin of most of the establishments is the connectivity. The following map shows the distribution of the different typologies of food establishments. Several patterns can be noticed such as the pan and tea stalls outside office complex and near the auto rickshaw stand, the peanut vendor near the bus stand, the bakery behind the opposite bus stand. The typology of these establishments are determined by the free time available by the users. This can be figured out by the context. Approx. free time 15min - 2 hours

The following section shows the layout of the street and the activities that occur on it. There are several interesting features to notice. For example, the integration of Juice Junction into the sidewalk. These sidewalks are not completely taken over , they are partially used when the sidewalk exapands at the junction creating a small void to fill. Similarly the same phenomenon can be noticed in the street stalls.

Hampanakatte, though close to Jyothi circle, is very different in terms of the activity and pace. The site specifically selected is the Central bus stand located near Nehru Maidan. This is a bus terminal for majorly private-owned buses, but also the government-owned buses. The reason for selecting this particular site instead of rest of the area because of the dynamics of the site. In this site, we can see fish markets, repair shops of many types, small hotels of different food bases, provision stores and of course a bus terminal.

The area of interest within Hampanakatte are within the streets leading to Statebank Bus Stand. Currently, the landmarks within the highlighted area are Kudmul Ranga Rao Town Hall, Nehru Maidan and Statebank Bus Stand. The intervention must be implemented within the highlighted. The scale of intervention is not fixed. There are numerous possibilities on tackling the design problem ranging from redesigning the bus stand to changing the layout of the street. One must analyse the site through the following factors 1. The cause and effect of spaces 2. The movement of people and vehicles within that space 3. The activities occuring within the space 4. Certain quirks or characters like junctions

POINT OF ACCESS
LE G E N D Bus Route Other Vehicle Routes Point of Access
To make any changes to the bus stand or the areas in it’s vicinity, one must understand the movement of the vehicles within the site. A responsible intervention is the one that does not disrupt the existing patterns. Of one has to change the patterns, one must create a new pattern of movement that is more efficient than the existing. The following map shows the movement of the buses and the access points to the bus stand. It can be noticed that in certain places to get from Point A to B, there are numerous combination and there is a luxury of removing one possibility. The challenge lies within selecting the possibility to remove. 52

As mentioned before, the site is selected due to the diversity in activities within the site. One more aspect of the analysis of the site involves understanding different activities and prioritizing them. Places like the market are not very easily accessible. There are street vendors, food stalls, food trucks scattered across different corners. These must be given a space to be accessible.

Acharane - Programming
“ಆಚರಣೆ ” (pronounced as Aacharane) means celebration in Kannada. But what does celebration mean? Is it something that happens rarely and in grand scale? Does it happen every day and in every activity, we perform? Hampanakatte is a melting pot of different activities and functions. But most of them are not so accessible and are cramped into a corner. The main objective of the intervention is to make all these activities and spaces like market, park, bus stand and celebrating them. The intervention is a modern adaption of the essence of the origin of Hampanakatte. The origin of the “Katte” began with the tourists taking shade under a tree generating an event of sitting down. When many people celebrate this event in the space, it leads to several other activities like interaction, trade and such others. Acharan is a take on this idea of generating different events through small gestures like providing shade and seating. This will surround and connect all the spaces in Hampanakatte. Acharan is the celebration of different street vendors and the intervention is providing a space for them to set up and engage trade. Acharan is a public space for people to visit, engage, interact and rest.

“The Demonstration Section of Yangpu Riverside Public Space is the initialing stage for the public space development project of the area. It is highly important for it is a benchmark not only for the area, but also for the entire 45km long riverside restoration project.”
76
Case Study
For the dense factories aligning along the shore, the architect, one of the citizens living the area for many years, was never able to walk up to the Huangpu River in this region. “Can’t see the river next to you” has been a problem for the urban space for nearly a hundred years. When first getting to site after many obstacles along the way, standing on the old wharf, feeling the moorings carved by time and looking at skyscrapers of Lujiazui in the distance, we realized that this could be a dramatic transformation on the city’s urban space, and would be a great opportunity to demonstrate the city’s rich culture of industrial development. Architect: Bernard Tschumi Area: 135 acres Year: 1982 Photographs: Cyrus Penarroyo City: Paris Country: France
As part of an international competition, 1982-83, to revitalize the abandoned and undeveloped land from the French national wholesale meat market and slaughterhouse in Paris, France, Bernard Tschumi was chosen from over 470 entries including that of OMA/Rem Koolhaas, Zaha Hadid, and Jean Nouvel. Unlike other entries in the competition, Tschumi did not design the park in a traditional mindset where landscape and nature are the predominant forces behind the design . Rather he envisioned Parc de la Villette as a place of culture where natural and artificial are forced together into a state of constant reconfiguration and discovery.
78
Case Study
Parc de la Villette is designed with three principles of organization which Tschumi classifies as points, lines, and surfaces. The 135 acre site is organized spatially through a grid of 35 points, or what Tschumi calls follies. The series of follies give a dimensional and organizational quality to the park serving as points of reference. The repetitive nature of each folly, even though each one is unique and different, allow for the visitors to retain a sense of place through the large park.
