Membership

MEMBERSHIP As a current full-time student, faculty, or staff member, you already have access to the Rec Sports Center! We offer nonstudent memberships for SHSU Alumni, retired Faculty/Staff, and Spouses/Domestic Partners of current members. To enter the RSC, a valid Bearkat OneCard or Membership ID is required. For more information, please visit shsu.edu/membership.

Attire Guidelines You must have a towel larger than 6� x 6� with you in the weight room. Please wear attire that covers your torso. Closed-toed sports/tennis shoes are required. Please, no bare midriffs, open-armed tank tops, jeans, or shorts with rivets.

Guest Passes Students, Faculty/Staff, and all SHSU Rec Sports facility members may sponsor two (2) guests per day by purchasing daily passes ($10 each). Guests must be accompanied by the sponsor and have a valid ID on hand.

LOCKER ROOMS

Quarter lockers found near the RSC Weight Room and changing rooms are available for day use and are cleared at closing.

Day use lockers are available for you to keep your items secure and off the floor. Bring your own lock and clear it daily. General use cubbies with no doors are also available at your own risk and are cleared daily.

Lockers are free to use; patrons must provide their own locks. Once a year they must be cleared. Signs are posted prior to cleanout.

FITNESS & WELLNESS The Fitness Program offers comprehensive activities for the Bearkat Community. Programs include GroupX Classes, Personal Training, Instructional Classes, Fitness Workshops, Certifications, Weight Room Orientations and more.

Custom GroupX Classes Looking for something fun to do with your friends, your organization, or your department? Try a custom group fitness class! Priced starting at $1 per minute, it is a great way to team-build and do something different, all while getting fit. Schedule some stress relieving yoga for your staff members, bring your friends and try one of our black light cycling classes, or take out some aggression with a Hit Fit class. Don’t want to come to the RSC for your event? We’ll come to you! Classes can be scheduled in the RSC or at another campus location.

Hit Fit Mondays / 8:00 - 9:00 PM / MP1 This high-intensity interval training workout sculpts your body and burns calories like nothing you have ever experienced. Your trainer will teach you the correct form and technique while leading you through explosive boxing rounds where you will deliver jab, cross, hook, and uppercut combinations while working your entire body. You won’t know what hit you!

Ladies that Lift Wednesdays / 5:15 - 6:15 PM / RB1 Strong is the new fit! Come to this women-only weight training class to help you learn how to lift weights properly. Less than a quarter of people workout correctly to see the results they want. Let our certified personal trainers teach you how to lift weights correctly so you can reach your fitness goals.

Spring Break Fit Camp (Session I) Tues or Thurs / 5:30 - 6:30 PM Spring Break will be here before you know it and your New Year’s Resolutions are fading fast! Join Spring Break Fit Camp and get back into the groove with a certified personal trainer. Workouts include interval training, weights, and plenty of ab exercises. This program not only gives you a great workout, but it helps you get spring break ready in the healthiest of ways!

Join our GroupX Instructors in the Piney Woods Hall courtyard or multipurpose room each week for a great workout. Class formats rotate so you can try them all!

Essential for anyone wanting to make a plan for their future fitness goals, fitness assessments include an evaluation of the major fitness components including body composition, cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, estimated body age, and core strength.

It’s 192 miles round-trip to Nacogdoches, home of rival Stephen F. Austin State University. Can you bike there and back before Spring Break? Keep track of your rides in our Cycle Fit classes from Jan 29 - Mar 8. Winners will enter to win exclusive Rec Sports gear.

Cardio Kickboxing

Gloves aren’t a fashion statement in this high-intensity interval training workout. Your instructor will lead you through explosive rounds on the punching bag where you will deliver different combinations that work your entire body!

A non-stop workout featuring kickboxing, athletic training and plyometrics set to heart pounding music. Come relieve some stress and get a great workout at the same time!

Barre Above

Have you done cardio at the barre? This class incorporates movements that will increase your heart rate through a combination of formats including ballet, yoga, and pilates.

Barre Toning Meet us at the barre and experience a fun full body workout that incorporates ballet, yoga, and Pilates to strengthen, tone, and stretch.

Barre R&R You’ve met us at the barre for a great full body workout, now try using it to recover. This class will help improve flexibility, balance, and strengthen your legs and core.

Bearkat Bootcamp What is your workout of the day? This team environment class will utilize a variety of strength equipment including barbells, kettlebells, TRX, and more.

Booty Blast This class incorporates movements targeting your lower body using both body weight exercises and strength equipment.

Everything you love about Booty Blast and HardCORE combined into one great workout.

Cycle Fit

This indoor cycling class consists of varying speeds, resistance levels and intensities targeted at raising your heart rate and strengthening your lower body while taking you through a variety of sprints and hills.

Cycle & Sculpt This fusion class is everything you love about indoor cycling combined with muscle sculpting intervals off the bike. Get your cardio and strength workout done in one great workout!

Roll & Recover Everyone needs a little R&R. Foam rolling will help you massage out those hard to stretch muscles while improving your flexibility. Pair this class with your own workout or any one of our group fitness classes.

HardCORE

Strengthen and sculpt your core muscles in this hardcore ab workout. A great addition to any cardio or strength class, or after your own personal workout.

Pedal Party Bring your friends and get your weekend off on the right foot. This class is everything you love about indoor cycling combined with your desire to get the weekend started!

Pilates This class will increase your flexibility while strengthening muscles that help with balance and coordination while using only your body weight and minimal equipment.

PiYo ™

Strengthen and tone your entire body in this fast-paced class that combines exercises from Pilates and Yoga. Come work your way to sculpted abs, increased core strength, and greater stability!

Pop Pilates Build a solid core and muscle strength in this total body, equipment free class! The upbeat music will help you keep moving through the positions with ease.

STRONG by Zumba ™ This class that a combination of HIIT, body weight exercises and strength conditioning lead by the music. This is not a dance-fitness program, but like Zumba®, the music is part of the foundation.

Total Body Toning

This full body workout increases muscular strength and endurance, targeting all the main muscle groups utilizing a variety of strength equipment including barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells and more.

Yoga This mind-body class does more than improve flexibility. Gain balance, core strength, muscular strength and endurance, and leave feeling relaxed.

FACILITIES & RESERVATIONS About our Facilities Recreational Sports is responsible for the management and general operation of nine recreational facilities across the SHSU campus. Each of our facilities is available for reservation and/or rental to the SHSU community. University Camp University Camp is a one-of-a-kind recreation and retreat facility that offers the university community an ever increasing range of facilities. Open for day and limited overnight use, it’s an ideal spot for a variety of functions. Meeting lodges, a dining hall, barbeque pits, a fishing pier, picnic areas and more are available.

Challenge Course Price Range [ $10 - $20 / Person ] The Challenge Course at University Camp offers a unique, multi-participant high ropes course and an expansive series of low elements all in a beautiful natural setting. With the help of our thoughtful and well-trained staff, the programs offered can be designed to meet any number of educational, developmental and recreational goals.

ACE Personal Training Prep Class Wednesdays [ 3 - 5 PM ] Jan 31 - Mar 28 (no class Mar 14) / Register By [ Jan 31 ] Students: [ $85 ] Non-Students: [ $95 ] Interested in becoming a personal trainer at the RSC? This course will provide you with the basic tools to become a personal trainer as well as help to prepare you for the ACE Personal Trainer Examination. Fee includes: study materials, a 20% discount on books and a $150 discount on the exam, a practice exam, testing tips, and fitness assessment. Participants are encouraged to apply to be a Rec Sports Personal Trainer at the conclusion of this course (interviews begin Apr. 5). Exam fee is not included. Register online at shsu.edu/fitness.

Successful participants will receive CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Lifeguarding and First Aid Training certifications. Students must attend all classes in order to to be eligible for certification. Participants must complete the Lifeguarding Training Prerequisites on the first day of class. Aquatics

AQUATICS Take a swim in our seasonally-heated pool. We have four 25-yard lap lanes and a leisure area which can be used for water volleyball, water basketball or intramural and special events. Additional amenities include a tanning area, lounge chairs and covered tables.

Private Swim Instruction Reach your swimming goals with tailored coaching from a certified Water Safety Instructor. Participants must be at least 16 years old. Iron Bearkat Self-Directed Triathlon Feb 5 - Mar 2 [ FREE ] Keep yourself fit as you complete a true IronMan distance at your own pace. Swim 2.4 miles, Bike 112 miles, and run 26.2 miles within one month and earn the coveted Iron Bearkat T-shirt. Pick up your tracking sheets at the RSC Pool office.

Polar Bearkat Plunge Jan 22 / 6:00 - 7:00 PM FREE Join Rec Sports in the first Polar Bearkat Plunge on Monday, Jan. 22, at 6 p.m. Following Fit Fest, come to the RSC Pool for a quick dip to kick off the school year. Free T-shirts to the first 50 participants. Cocoa and Snacks will be provided!

Intramural Sports

INTRAMURAL SPORTS The Intramural Sports program provides you the opportunity to compete and have fun in various team and individual sports. Leagues and tournaments are organized into different skill levels so you can play against other participants with comparable abilities in a relaxed, recreational atmosphere. Flag football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, softball, racquetball, golf, and tennis are just a few of the sports offered throughout the year.

Become an Official Have fun officiating a variety of sports and pad your resumé with words like “quick decision making, problem solving, judgement, and leadership” by becoming an Intramural Official. The best officials will have the opportunity to referee regional and national tournaments held throughout the year.

Learn proper techniques, safety, as well as equipment care and maintenance. Must be Top Rope Belay Certified and be able to climb a 5.9 cleanly.

Set Your Summits Climbing Challenge Semester Pass [ Required ] Jan 22 - May 2 From Wheeler Peak in New Mexico to Mount Everest in Nepal, set a summit and climb that elevation on our climbing wall. Track your progress every time you climb and awards will be given to the top summiters at the end of the semester.

Join Recreational Sports and The Food Pantry at SHSU as they present the Inaugural “Ready, Set, Glow” 5K Fun Run. You’ll run on and around campus sporting your best glow apparel. The registration fee covers a t-shirt and glow items such as necklaces, bracelets, and accessories. Would you like more glow? Donate five non-perishable food items the day of the race and get extra glow paint! Same-day registration will be allowed at the check-in table with limited glow items and t-shirts based on availability. The proceeds from this race go toward supporting students who struggle with food insecurity by providing food and educational programs.

February is Heart Health Month! Join Rec Sports and the Office of Health Promotion for these fun and exciting activities!
