N
ew functions, flexibility, and updates throughout the entire lifecycle of a vehicle — all at an attractive price. These are the requirements of today’s automotive manufacturers and end users for infotainment systems. The new car radio platform from Continental rises to these challenges with a sophisticated concept and intelligent architecture. The market trend for in-vehicle infotainment is clear. The US market research company IHS Automotive predicts that, by 2020, 25.4 million vehicles will be equipped with audio infotainment systems — a steep increase compared to 2014, when IHS counted only 14.4 million vehicles with such systems. Customers and manufacturers are increasingly expecting features such as smartphone connectivity via CarPlay and Android Auto to be standard features. Increasingly larger (touch) screens in the cockpit, app functions and a connection to the cloud will soon be considered as standard features. Despite these increased requirements,
customers and OEMs expect lower prices for such products. Automotive manufacturers appreciate flexible solutions that can easily be adapted to various vehicle models, trim levels, and markets. Here, another challenge is posed by the varying standards for digital and satellite radio across the world and the rapid technical development within the consumer electronics market with regard to mobile devices. The infotainment system of the future must be able to adapt to changing market requirements and user behaviour, while remaining reliable, easy to use, and ideally upgradeable via a software update. SUPPORT OF VARIOUS MARKET SEGMENTS AND REGIONS Continental is rising to these diverse challenges with a new radio platform, which fits into a flat panel housing only 40 mm in depth, therefore giving automotive manufacturers maximum flexibility for interior design. The platform also supports a colour touchscreen and, depending on the target market, can receive AM/FM, DAB/DAB+/DMB, DRM, and

HD radio via software-defined radio technology. It also supports smartphone connectivity via MirrorLink, CarPlay, Android Auto and Baidu CarLife. In addition, it enables speech input and textto-speech output, and is equipped with Bluetooth, iPod/USB connection, and an SD card slot to support multimedia players. A rear-view camera can also be connected thanks to a video-in interface and an Ethernet-based audio/video bridge (AVB) supports the connection of a surround-view ECU to the system classified as an entry platform in the multimedia field. Apps, cloud services and even the integration of a navigation system are major features of this platform. The platform was developed by Continental with four core requirements in mind: • Maximum flexibility through softwaredefined radio functions with worldwide reception options • Secure smartphone integration • Compact flat panel design • High degree of scalability to ensure that one hardware platform can be

New in-vehicle radio platform from Continental Continental has developed a progressive vehicle radio platform, which allows control of numerous individual functions on one processor, ultimately reducing hardware to a minimum. “Complexity for vehicle entertainment is increasing rapidly. With our new radio platform we can now offer a solution, which not only copes with a vast variety of functions, but is highly cost effective and usable for vehicle manufacturers worldwide,” said Johann Hiebl, head of the Continental business unit Infotainment & Connectivity. The main approach behind Continental’s radio platform is simple: Replace cost intensive hardware with software, wherever possible. To achieve this reduction the Continental radio platform is built on a highly optimised system on chip (SoC). It has a multi core processor at the heart of the platform that is handling all human machine interface, connectivity and audio-post processing related functions, as well as an integrated vehicle controller and a digital signal processor (DSP) that is enabling the core radio technology of the new platform — the Software Defined Radio (SDR). The SDR integrates analogue and digital radio standards such as AM/FM, DAB/DAB+/ DMB, DRM and HD radio worldwide on a single hardware. New standards can be enabled by software update as they become available in different regions, for example Chinese Digital Radio (CDR) in China. With audio coming today typically from broadcast, as well as from drivers’ or passengers’ digital devices connected via Bluetooth or USB/iPod connection, Continental’s new radio platform does not include a CD player. Thanks to the reduction of hardware components achieved by using an optimised SoC, it features a 40 mm deep flat panel design head unit, supporting capacitive touchscreen, HD resolution and class D amplifiers. For vehicle manufacturers, this flat panel approach allows for great freedom when it comes to interior design. Drivers on the other hand can enjoy a great variety of functions and connected services in a safe way, since the platform is capable of mirror applications and content from smartphones via different standards such as MirrorLink, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay or Baidu Carlife.

The infotainment system of the future must be able to adapt to changing market requirements and user behaviour, while remaining reliable, easy to use, and ideally upgradeable via a software update. connectivity, and hardware-based H.264 decoding, all technical requirements for the support of “mirroring concepts” are met. MirrorLink, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto specifications are implemented according to the protocols defined by the respective license holders, notably Apple and Google. This allows smartphonebased apps to access the touchscreen of the head unit, the transfer of audio signals in both directions, and the support of smartphone-based navigation functions as well as other applications when they become available. MEETING MARKET REQUIREMENTS A wide selection of features combined with best possible cost optimisation, broadbased scalability for a variety of markets and models, reducing the number of variants to target markets across the world thanks to software-defined radio, maximum freedom for interior design due to flat panel design, and future viability to implement new functions or services via software updates or upgrades throughout the lifetime of the vehicle — these are the main advantages of the new radio platform. With its new flexible radio platform design, Continental is perfectly equipped for the challenges of the next radio generations. Macbook Pros, will be the brain of your self-driving car. Do your products require connectivity with IOT, DSRC and such other networks for optimum performance? What are the areas of infrastructure facilities development one would require in future, to fuel the acceptance level of infotainment products by the users? While connectivity will be an important factor in making self-driving cars a reality, it’s not feasible for an autonomous vehicle to be reliant on constant connectivity. A car which loses control if it hits a patch of bad cell signal or goes through a tunnel is not acceptable. That’s why we believe the computing power required for self-driving functionality must be on board, not just in the cloud. One side effect of self-driving cars will be the freeing up of in-vehicle screen real estate and the ability of the car’s occupants to consume infotainment content. Concept vehicles, such as the Mercedes F 015 Luxury in Motion imagine the car as a ‘mobile living space’ where every surface
is a screen capable of displaying rich interactive content. What are the challenges related to the further development of your products?
NVIDIA has invested billions of dollars worth of R&D in their core technology.
What do they entail in terms of new technologies, design concepts, big data management and security of your systems from hackers? NVIDIA is leading the world in selfdriving technology and we’re currently working with more than 70 companies and research institutions on autonomous vehicle projects. Although automotive is
the smallest division in our company, it’s also the fastest growing. We are able to meet the challenge of resourcing this opportunity because we can leverage the expertise of employees from across multiple divisions in NVIDIA. Security is certainly a major topic which must be considered in the development of autonomous vehicles. Last year, hackers demonstrated they were able to take control of a Jeep Cherokee remotely, exploiting a security loophole in the vehicle’s wireless connection. Such issues can arise when a vehicle’s computer systems are not effectively integrated. In the past, one approach to adding technology functions to cars was simply to ‘bolt on’ new hardware or software components, creating an infrastructure that was riddled with potential entry points at risk of exploitation. For this reason, NVIDIA works with auto makers to develop centralised car computers with the power to handle future functionality and the security framework to maintain their integrity.

multi-year, multi-vehicle partnership with Tata Motors to supply infotainment across all their passenger cars. Infotainment systems powered by HARMAN technology are already deployed in new Tata vehicles such as the Zest, Bolt and the upcoming Tiago. HARMAN’s systems are well-designed and intelligent, giving the driver a safe and pleasant experience.
What are the areas of infrastructure facility development one would require in future, to fuel the acceptance level of infotainment products by the users? Connectivity features are gradually becoming an imperative for infotainment systems, given the experience that consumers have with their connected mobile devices. Given this, proper infrastructure support for quality cellular data connectivity on-the-go would go a long way to improve the take rate of infotainment systems. Other infrastructure support which would make infotainment systems more useful to end consumers is ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems). This could be in terms of adaptive traffic signalling through camera feeds to reduce traffic pile-up at signals, provide smooth passage to emergency vehicles at intersections without accidents, avoiding traffic jams in case of traffic incidents, V2X communications, etc. What are the challenges related to the further development of your products? What do they entail in terms of new technologies, design concepts, big data management and security of your systems from hackers? One of the key challenges, not only for infotainment products, but for all consumer facing products, is providing a best-in-class user experience. This can be in terms of how the user interacts with the system, how the system can be proactive and provide contextual,
suggestive tips to the user without the user explicitly commanding the system to do so, and how it can provide features that helps the user in completing a task – thereby becoming a Virtual, personal assistant of the driver over time. In terms of technologies, this entails deployment of new HMI and Display technologies, Machine Learning, good connectivity infrastructure, and of course, a “defensein-depth” Security Model. What is your vision for car infotainment in India? HARMAN’s vision is to provide a seamless connected infotainment and audio experience for the India market, through our leading products and systems, software and connected services. We have made significant investments in engineering centres and manufacturing plant. With the acquisition of Symphony Teleca, we now have a workforce of 7,500+ people across seven locations in India. This enables us to provide an end-to-end connected car experience for the market. In which areas do you plan to take quantum jumps to retain your market leadership? HARMAN is the market leader in the connected car space and will continue to invest in areas that help us retain this leadership and deliver path-breaking technologies as first-to-market experiences for the OEMs and end consumers.
What is your take on infotainment being a distraction to the drivers? How it can be avoided? HARMAN’s systems are welldesigned, intelligent (that is, learns driver’s habits, their likes/dislikes, etc) and can transform itself to a proactive, personal assistant taking care of the driver’s secondary tasks/needs, thereby reducing the cognitive load and giving the driver a safe and pleasant experience. How do you look at the market growth over the next two years? What factors will govern the growth? The Indian infotainment market will move from Entry BT radio to Display Connected/Entry Navigation radios. This will also reflect an increase in the take rates of OEM fitted systems. Smartphone penetration, younger car buyers, prolonged time on road and user’s preference for a connected and safe infotainment experience on the go, are key factors which will trigger this change. The government’s smart city plan will also boost related infrastructure development, to aid growth in the infotainment market. What are your plans for Make in India for India? HARMAN has already invested in a manufacturing footprint in Pune and is well aligned to the Make in India vision. We have adequate levels of localisation which again is aligned to this vision. The plant has scalable capacity and capability for exports as well. Our engineering centres in India also support this plan by engineering products suited for the Indian market.

Do away with distracted driving More often than not, it is the sudden diversion of attention from the road ahead that causes a fatal accident. This form of distracted driving is usually due to using the mobile phone, looking at someone or something behind, trying to balance a coffee cup, or any such reason. HUNED CONTRACTOR writes on the various factors of distracted driving as also on the new technologies that automotive OEMs are developing to make vehicles safer.
I
n a recent tragic mishap, Suresh Gaur, his wife Pratima and their two children, Dhiraj and Sonakshi, were all killed in an accident on the PuneMumbai Expressway while on their way to attend a marriage. Investigation revealed that Suresh had been talking on his mobile phone and perhaps was so inattentive to the road ahead that he crashed into a tanker due to misjudgement of distance and speed. There are many such cases that happen with regular frequency on Indian roads, the reason, more often than not, distracted driving. The statistics are horrifying: one serious road accident in the country occurs every minute and 16 die on Indian roads every hour. There are, on an average, 1,214 road crashes every
day in India. Two-wheelers account for 25 per cent of the total road crash deaths. More so, 20 children under the age of 14 die every day due to such accidents and 377 people die every day, equivalent to a jumbo jet crashing every day. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, the top 10 cities with the highest number of road crash deaths are Delhi, Chennai, Jaipur, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Kanpur, Lucknow, Agra, Hyderabad and Pune. The frequency of traffic collisions in India is amongst the highest in the world. The Global Status Report on Road Safety published by the World Health Organisation (WHO) identified the major causes of traffic collisions as driving over the speed limit,
driving under the influence of alcohol, and not using helmets and seat belts. Failure to maintain lane or yield to oncoming traffic when turning are prime causes of accidents on four-lane, non-access controlled national highways. However, apart from the reasons cited above, the biggest contender emerging now is distracted driving - the act of driving while engaged in other activities such as looking after children, text messaging, talking on the phone or to a passenger, watching videos, eating, smoking, etc. According to the United States Department of Transportation, “Text messaging while driving creates a crash risk 23 times higher than driving while not distracted. Despite these statistics, more than 37 per Safety systems are now being incorporated in the basic design of any vehicle.

SAFETY cent of drivers have admitted to sending or receiving text messages while driving and 18 per cent admit doing so regularly. “Most of the fatalities or serious injuries that have been recorded in accident cases during the past year have been due to people talking or text messaging on their mobile phones,” confirms Abhijeet Kadam Regional Transport Officer, Pune. TYPES OF DISTRACTED DRIVING Distractions while driving can be separated into three distinct groups: visual, manual, and cognitive. Visual distraction involves taking one’s eyes off the road, while manual distraction involves taking one’s hands off the wheel. Cognitive distraction occurs when an individual’s focus is not directly on the act of driving and his/her mind wanders. Distractions influenced by the advancement of technology, especially text messaging or talking on the phone, can require a combination of visual, manual, and cognitive attention from the driver,
Top-end models of cars and SUVs come packaged with a host of safety features.
thus making these types of distractions particularly dangerous. While a detailed study on distracted driving is yet to take place in India, according to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), apart from the menace of mobile phones, some foods and drinks can lead to
Safety Tips • Before beginning a long drive, always get enough sleep and eat something before you go. Highly caffeinated beverages are not necessarily the best way to stay awake while driving. While initially you will feel more alert, the effects can recede with time, and your attention may wander although you remain awake. • Pull over and take breaks every couple of hours, even if you don’t feel sleepy. Grab a snack, get some fresh air, and stretch your legs by walking around. • If you can, share the driving responsibilities with someone else. This will allow you to keep an eye on each other while driving and also enable you to nap without losing time. • If you do have to pull over, move your vehicle off the road. Never park on the shoulder or in the breakdown lane for any reason except an emergency. • Avoid talking and texting on the mobile phone. Use a hands-free device. • Never drink any alcohol before your trip. • If you are driving a rental vehicle, familiarise yourself with the car and all of its equipment (horn, brakes, etc) before you hit the road. At times, distraction caused due to searching for the right switch or accessory could lead to a fatal mishap. • Before setting off on a long car trip, be sure your vehicle is in prime condition - that tyres are properly inflated, all fluids are at their proper levels and you have a full tank of petrol, diesel or gas. • On longer trips, keep napkins, plasticware and a small cooler handy for meals on the go. Keep a set of jumper cables, a spare tyre and extra fluids for the car in your trunk. • Make sure everyone in the car buckles his or her seat belt. Not only will it keep you safe, but in many places it’s also the law.
dangerous distractions. McKeel Hagerty, President of Hagerty Classic Insurance Company, did a study to find out which foods were the worst to try to consume while driving. Coffee was the top offender because of its tendency to spill even if in a cup with a travel lid. Hot soup was second, followed by hamburgers and barbecued food. Moreover, using the GPS system while driving is also a prime reason for inattention to the road and traffic ahead. The study also revealed that young drivers have a greater tendency to be involved in distracted driving than elder individuals. Additionally, males have a greater tendency to engage in distracted driving activities. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety analysed nearly 1,700 videos that capture the actions of teenage drivers in the moments before a crash. It found that distractions were a factor in nearly six of ten moderate to severe crashes. Once again, the most common forms of distraction were talking or otherwise engaging with passengers and using a cell phone, including talking, text messaging and reviewing messages. Other forms of distraction observed in the videos included drivers looking away from the road at something inside the vehicle, singing or moving to music, grooming and reaching for an object. In one video released by AAA, a teenage boy is seen trying to navigate a turn on a rain-slicked road with one hand on the wheel and a cell phone held to his ear in the other hand. The car crosses a lane of traffic and runs off the road, stopping just short of railroad tracks that run parallel to the road.

SAFETY TECHNOLOGY TO INCREASE SAFETY While airbags play an important role in creating a safety barrier during a collision or any other severe impact (even though many low-end models in India are yet to offer this component), a new range of vehicle safety technologies is now making its way into the market, aimed at removing the human-error factor and preventing accidents. Collision avoidance or warning systems have been a recent focus of in-car technology. Manufacturer research and development aims to make vehicles safer by reducing driver reaction times in emergency braking situations and in some cases to remove the need for drivers to react at all. Safety systems and technologies vary between automotive
prevent you from reversing out of a parking spot and into oncoming traffic. Audio and visual signals typically alert drivers of any approaching vehicles due to cross their path, giving drivers a chance to stop and avoid a collision. These technologies are also useful during moments of distracted driving because the alarm system gets the attention of the driver in time to maybe avoid a collision. Voice-activated smart technology, similar to the technology used in modern smartphones, is now being used to operate in-car audio and navigation devices. In addition to convenience, this technology means less time spent looking at the vehicle’s audio and navigational systems to operate them and more time spent with

makers, but the principle is to use cameras or sensors, often laser or radar, to detect when a vehicle is approaching another vehicle too closely or too quickly. The system sends audio or visual cues to the driver to warn of an impending collision. In more advanced technology systems, brakes are applied, seat belts pre-tensioned, and windows closed all automatically by the on-board computerised safety system. This technology is also being used to avoid accidents involving lane changes and blind spots in side rear view mirrors. Blind zone alert and lane departure systems also use sensors to warn drivers of objects travelling in blind spots that would otherwise require drivers to remove their eyes from the road. Further, reverse cameras now come with cross-traffic warning safety systems to
eyes safely on the road. Most vehicle manufacturers have their own version of an infotainment system, but technologies such as Buick’s IntelliLink allow you to program your music or your navigation system with voice commands. According to a report, testing is already under way on a wireless system that will allow vehicles to communicate with each other and other technologies such as traffic signals, road signs, and curb sensors. TAKING THE INITIATIVE Concerned about the increasing incidence of accidents due to distracted driving and other causes, automotive OEMs are now seriously focusing on how their cars and commercial vehicles can be made safer and prevent loss of human

life. For instance, Swedish automotive manufacturer Volvo has long kept track of how many people are seriously injured or killed while driving its vehicles. It uses this data to see how much safer it can make its vehicles in the event of a crash. Now, the company has made a bold promise — by 2020 there will be no serious injuries or fatalities in a Volvo car or SUV. This does not, of course, preclude people from driving recklessly and getting themselves killed. However, conventional driving should be made much safer with the inclusion of a number of technologies. It starts with making the interior of the car safer with improved airbags and restraints. Volvo already has various smart features in its cars. Adaptive cruise control, for example, is already available on many cars. It allows you to set a maximum speed, but uses radar to maintain a safe distance from the car in front of you. It can even apply the brakes if need be. This can be taken a step further with full collision avoidance. When a crash is likely, the driver will be warned. If action isn’t taken, the car can begin braking to avoid, or at least minimise the impact. A relatively new technology that Volvo plans to make use of extensively is lane assistance. Cars will use cameras to detect lanes and alert the driver if they begin to drift. This has been found to dramatically reduce crashes from dozing off at the wheel and distracted driving. Road signs can be identified by cameras as well to help alert drivers to posted speed limits and upcoming hazards. Cameras will also be used to watch for pedestrians in the vicinity of the vehicle. This is similar to the technology that is used in self-driving cars to identify potential obstacles on the road. The driver can be alerted if a person is in the car’s path and the brake can be automatically applied. Companies like Ford and Tesla are moving quickly toward fully autonomous vehicles. Then there’s Google’s self-driving car program. Volvo too is in the early stages of driverless technology, and handing control over to a computer when it’s clear something is wrong could be a step in that direction. “While such technologies are now becoming mandatory additions to a car, the Indian car market too is maturing fast towards adoption of such devices and safety over price is now an important
SAFETY consideration,” Werner Eichhorn, Sales & Marketing Head, Skoda, said in an interview recently. One such company taking the lead in devising new braking technologies is Jacobs Vehicle Systems, the creator of the engine brake. Revealing the company’s new technologies that can help make driving safer, Kunal Sharma, the company’s India Business Manager, elaborates about the dedicated cam. JVS custom designs and manufactures a class of high-performance engine brakes that utilise a dedicated engine braking cam lobe. The dedicated cam profile has compression-release and brake-gas recirculation lobes that are optimised for each application. Another example is of eTPU. “We develop control systems that act on precise timing signals such as the cam and crank shafts by selecting microcontrollers that contain a second microprocessor specifically designed to handle high-speed timing signals—the enhanced Time Processing Unit (eTPU). This microprocessor executes timingrelated code concurrently with the main controller code in the primary processor, meaning that timing signals are acted upon extremely quickly and without interrupting the primary application code,” he explains. In fact, companies are now setting up technology centres to specifically develop products that can enhance the safety aspect of any vehicle. As for example Faurecia, a global leader in providing engineering solutions and automotive components, that has set up dedicated technology centres in Pune and Bengaluru, the former for interior, seating and exterior and the latter for emissions control technologies. Active headrests, curtain airbags, airbag explosion through seat seam line, structural design of door panels with honey comb geometry, etc are the various design methodologies being worked upon to reduce head impact criterion (HIC), neck impact criterion (NIC) or pelvic impact. Considerable development is also being done in the area of shock absorbers so as to lessen the force of the impact during a collision. Duroshox, with its two state-ofthe-art manufacturing facilities in Pune, focuses on development of assemblies and sub-modules that are used in suspensions and specialised seating-related applications.
Its product portfolio includes seating suspensions, seating frames, seat adjustors/ slides, two and three-wheeler shock absorbers, etc. “All our products are manufactured keeping safety as a prime factor,” says Anshul Goel, Managing Director, Duroshox (P) Ltd. Continental Automotive Components, for instance, has a dedicated R&D facility, the Technical Center India (TCI), which develops automotive technology and provides software services for the automotive group. “In addition, we have engineering talent across our other locations in India, including Bommasandra in Bengaluru. At TCI, over 1,000 engineers work on highly advanced technologies for mature markets while developing locally relevant solutions for emerging markets like India. TCI engineers in India are developing ABS solutions for two-

Auto components industry According to ICRA report, auto component industry margins expand on commodity support despite the weak top line momentum.
I
CRA’s study of 48 publicly listed auto ancillaries reveal commodity linked margin expansion which has eclipsed pain of slow growth for the auto component industry in the current fiscal. The sample of 48 listed companies constitutes around 25 per cent of auto components industry’s turnover. With estimated OE demand growth of 3-4 per cent in FY16, and a stable aftermarket, ICRA estimates auto component industry’s revenue growth to be moderate during FY16 at 3-5 per cent, vis-a-vis 10 per cent in FY15; performance of automotive segments namely tractor, motorcycles and LCV segment has been subdued during this period. Over the medium to long term, growth in the auto component industry will be higher than the domestic automotive industry growth given the increasing localisation by OEMs, higher component content per vehicle and rising exports from India. Operating margin to moderate going forward: Auto ancillaries have benefited from steady decline in commodity prices, which has pushed their operating margin significantly up. Despite the demand slowdown, operating margins for several players has continued to expand sequentially. ICRA’s sample of
48 ancillaries witnessed 180 bps YoY improvement in operating margin to 15.7 per cent in Q2FY16 in the backdrop of 226 bps correction in raw material cost, and despite employee expense growth of 57 bps over the same period. ICRA expects operating margin to peak out in FY16, as benefits of benign commodity prices are eventually passed on to OEMs, with a lag of a quarter or two, on account of inbuilt price indexation clause. Over the medium term, ICRA expects operating margins to stabilise at 14-14.5 per cent level.
Over the medium to long term, growth in the auto component industry will be higher than the domestic automotive industry growth. Weakness in the US heavy truck sales and the yuan depreciation cause of concern for Indian auto component exports: Owing to subdued demand in the domestic OE segment as well as robust export growth, the share of exports increased from 24 per cent in FY13 to 29 per cent in FY15. Indian automotive
3 2 AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS FINDER | APRIL 2016 | www.APFIndia.com
exports have a high dependence on the US and European market, which together account for over 60 per cent of overall auto component exports from India. Slowdown in the US M&HCV is a concern for Indian auto component exports; however, healthy growth in the US and European PV market is expected to offset the same to an extent. ICRA expects increasing thrust on the ‘Make in India’ initiative and depreciation of the INR vis-a-vis USD to support healthy export growth over the medium to long term. Nevertheless, Yuan depreciation and slowdown in US CV sales would be key challenges for Indian auto component exports in the near term. Credit profile improves: In line with growth projections of various OEMs, auto ancillaries incurred sizeable debt funded capital investments during FY11-FY13 which strained their capital structure and coverage indicators. Given the demand slowdown and surplus capacities, the industry has been in a consolidation mode over the last two years, taking steps to deleverage its balance sheet. Gearing levels and coverage indicators for the industry have improved considerably over the past 12-15 months and ICRA expects industry wide credit profile to strengthen further in the near term.

APEAL perceptions of two-wheelers Quality and understanding of two-wheeler features is key to APEAL satisfaction in India, J.D. Power Study finds.
A
PEAL perceptions of two-wheeler vehicles are impacted by the quality of the features and the thoroughness of feature explanations by salespersons, according to the J.D. Power 2016 India Two-Wheeler Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (2WAPEAL) Study, released recently. The India Two-Wheeler APEAL Study, which serves as the industry benchmark for new two-wheeler appeal, measures how gratifying a new two-wheeler is to own and ride based on owner evaluations during the first two to six months of ownership. The study examines 33 attributes across six performance categories (in alphabetical order): control switches/locks, engine and transmission performance, fuel economy, looks and styling, ride and handling, and seats. Overall, APEAL performance is reported as an index score based on a 1,000-point scale, with a higher score indicating higher satisfaction. The study finds that satisfaction with two-wheeler APEAL perceptions of models with 10 or fewer features averages 849, compared with 825 for models with 11 or more features. This stems from the fact that the number of initial quality problems experienced by owners of vehicles with 11 or more features is higher by 122 PP100 than by owners of vehicles with 10 or fewer features (260 PP100 vs 138 PP100, respectively). Additionally, among the models with 11 or more features, just 12 per cent of customers indicate that the salesperson did not explain the features and benefits of the two-wheeler. Among these customers, satisfaction is significantly lower than among those who received feature explanations (775 vs 832, respectively). “Two-wheeler manufacturers are providing a multitude of features to
differentiate their product offerings. However, the quality of execution of these features is pivotal to customer satisfaction,” said Mohit Arora, Executive Director, J.D. Power, Singapore. “It is prudent for OEMs to ensure that these new features are of optimum quality and their functionality is communicated effectively to the customer during new-vehicle delivery.”
In 2016, 62 per cent of two-wheeler owners indicate a desire for more than 10 features.
FOLLOWING ARE SOME OF THE KEY FINDINGS OF THIS YEAR’S STUDY: • Overall satisfaction with two-wheeler APEAL is 846, a slight 2-point drop from 2015. In terms of the two vehicle segment, the APEAL score averages 846 for scooters and 847 for motorcycles. • In 2016, 62 per cent of two-wheeler owners indicate a desire for more than 10 features; however, only 10 per cent indicate that their vehicles have 11 or more features. • The APEAL score has a strong impact on the likelihood of owners keeping their new two-wheeler for an extended period of time. Among highly satisfied owners (overall satisfaction scores of 931 points or higher), 73 per cent say they expect to keep their new vehicle for five years or more. In contrast, among highly dissatisfied owners (scores of 794 points or lower) just 61 per cent say they expect to keep their vehicle for same period. • Moreover, there is a strong correlation between APEAL scores and brand loyalty and advocacy. Among highly
satisfied owners, 75 per cent say they “definitely would” recommend their two-wheeler to a friend or relative, compared with 34 per cent of highly dissatisfied owners. “Satisfied two-wheeler owners tend to keep their vehicles for more than five years. This is a long-term relationship manufacturers need to recognise,” said Kaustav Roy, Director, J.D. Power, Singapore. “Therefore, it is critical for OEMs to support these owners with a high level of after-sales service, as this can have a positive impact on repurchase and advocacy. The upcoming J.D. Power 2016 Two-Wheeler Customer Service Index (CSI) Study will provide important insights into this aspect of ownership.” MODEL RESULTS BY SEGMENT Award recipient segments include scooters (executive) and motorcycles (economy, executive, upper executive and premium). In the scooter segment, TVS Zest 110 (875) ranks the highest among executive models. Shifting to top gear in the connected vehicles Scott J McCormick elaborates on connected vehicles and their importance in the current market.
C
onnected vehicles are vehicles that use different technologies to communicate bi-directionally with the driver, other cars on the road (vehicle-to-vehicle -V2V), roadside infrastructure (vehicle-to-infrastructure V2I), and the ‘Cloud’ and other road users equipped to send and receive signals. There are three primary components of vehicle communications: • The communication links between the car and the outside world (radio, cellular, GPS, WiFi, DSRC and Bluetooth). • The in-vehicle Controller Area Networks (CAN) that carry all the vehicle’s operational signals. • The information and entertainment networks that now carry music, video
and voice, and will be the repository of apps, personal data and other content. SECURITY Opening any communication gateway incurs risk of data corruption and loss and system failure from malicious intent. As more access is provided to wirelessly send and receive road, weather and traffic information, as well as infotainment content, more risk is incurred. Threats exist to identity confidentiality, data and application integrity, intrusion for malicious intent, and disrupting continuity of service. In-vehicle software can have up to 100 million lines of code which executes on both the primary computer board(s) and 70-100 microprocessor-based electronic control units (ECUs) networked throughout the body of the car.
Threats also exist from both bad programming and the inability to test all possible software interactions. A large number of vehicles communicating to each other is essentially an ad-hoc, self-forming network of devices with no server-side security. As vehicle communications are new to automakers, understanding and protecting the systems are a major, ongoing priority. As with computers, as the vehicle ages, new threats will surface. BIG DATA Data can be ‘Big’ not just by volume, but by velocity, variety and value. A single car produces an exabyte of data (a billion gigabytes) per year. Isolating useful data to extract knowledge is a monumental task. Managing massive data repositories is a huge concern for automakers. Trend
Interoperability between carriers, mobile technologies (devices and applications) and the automotive business is a necessity.

and cycle assessment of road and traffic conditions, vehicle performance, etc., from time frames of minutes to years is valuable. The next step is to mesh the above data to other knowledge bases in an output purchasing relationships, maintenance needs and sales opportunities. With the advent of vehicle systems that can receive, store, analyse and transmit data, concerns arise with security and privacy of that data. The data your car will hold may include credit card information for tolling systems, personal banking information, work Web portal and other credentials, as well as origin/ route/destination for your trips. Some vehicles already provide concierge services to a call center, collect diagnostic and vehicle performance data, as well as mileage, and driving behaviour. Wireless services are forecast to increase substantially, generating more opportunity for transmitting and storing personal data. Almost all of the data a vehicle generates is used by internal systems for engine management, steering and braking, command and control of subsystems, etc. Almost all of the data above is proprietary to the car maker or their suppliers. Very little of the data is attributable to your travels, driving behaviour or other personal information. The raw data is rarely useful, although the derived knowledge can be.
TRAINING AND CERTIFICATION Bidirectional communications for vehicles is a new area for the automotive community. Standards are still in development, and devices and systems are proliferating. Numerous activities are underway to provide common metrics for device certification, communication protocol adequacy and personnel qualifications. Equipment, systems and people need to be credentialed in some trustworthy manner to ensure the robustness of the deployed systems. Aside from developing standards, devices must be certified, systems must be able to perform seamlessly across all road weather, traffic and operation conditions, and employees must have a baseline understanding of the ecosystem. The lack of trained certified professionals is a tremendous issue. Professionals in the automotive industry are not trained in mobile technologies. Automotive professionals are not trained in telecommunications. Telecommunication carriers are not trained in the automotive business. Mobile technology professionals are not trained in the automotive business. Interoperability between carriers, mobile technologies (devices and applications) and the automotive business is a necessity; there are no professional services to support the growth in this industry.
There will be over 500,000 professionals entering into the connected vehicle market in the next five years in the US alone, and an estimated 2.5 million worldwide. Personnel from a wide variety of industries with efforts associated with the connected vehicle are: insurance, high-tech companies, transportation departments, data analytics companies, communications, IT staffs, entertainment, as well as the automotive industry. Connected vehicle support and professional services will be imperative to the industry as it rapidly evolves. A Connected Vehicle professional needs to know the following: • What are the safety, mobility and other verticals? • What communications protocols are appropriate for each vertical? • What are the differences between embedded, aftermarket and nomadic devices? • What are the different software approaches? • What standards govern this space? • What are the major public and private efforts, and industry affiliations? • Data harvesting, storage, usage rights, privacy and security needs • What policies and regulations govern this space? • How are insurance, finance, retail and other sectors impacted by these changes? CONCLUSION Vehicle communications must be secure and trusted, and industries and governments are working on this. Vehicles will have communication capabilities well before data ownership and privacy policies are finished. Vehicle owners should have the right to opt in to any use of their data, and know how that will be used. To advance in this ecosystem, people will need to be familiarised, trained and possibly credentialed on an ongoing basis. The author is President, Connected Vehicle Trade Association, a non-profit business league established to facilitate the interaction and advance the interests of the entities involved in the vehicle communication environment.

TECHNOLOGY
Pioneering work for heavyweights on the road Potential for reducing weight through the use of air springs with fibreglass-reinforced plastic roller pistons.
I
n nearly all industries from the automotive industry, railway engineering, aeronautics, machine and plant engineering, through to the construction industry and medical and energy technology, lightweight design is both a mega trend and a key technology. Material, weight, and, in turn, cost savings are becoming increasingly important for buses and trucks as well as construction and agricultural machinery, too. Lower emissions, lower consumption, reduced operating costs, an increasing pay load, and – last but not least – stricter CO2 emissions guidelines and exhaust gas standards such as Euro 6 are the driving forces behind innovation. For this reason, commercial vehicle manufacturers and suppliers are fighting over every last gram of weight, and, in turn, over every single litre of diesel that can be saved and every single gram of CO2 that is not emitted. All vehicle components have to play a role here. ContiTech has been a strong partner to renowned manufacturers. With the development of the plastic piston with a fully usable inner volume, the company is taking on a pioneering role. At the 2nd VDI Conference Plastics in Commercial Vehicles in Mannheim, Hubertus Gawinski, Head of Research and Development at ContiTech highlighted the potential for reducing weight through the use of air springs with fibreglassreinforced plastic roller pistons. The innovative design of the air springs also offers the best possible damping and ride comfort. LIGHTWEIGHT PLASTIC REPLACES STEEL AND ALUMINIUM Modern commercial vehicles and buses have to meet very strict requirements
can help to reduce weight by up to 75 per cent. NEXT LEVEL IN COMFORT Another important advantage of these lightweights with plastic pistons is that, just like with steel pistons, the inner volume can be used to the full in order to enhance comfort. With this optimisation measure, ContiTech ensures the best possible ride comfort because the transmission of road undulations to the vehicle is reduced. Directional stability is increased. This not only increases safety thanks to improved vehicle dynamics and easier handling but also protects the driver’s health. All other components are subjected to less stress as well, and goods that are sensitive to impacts are brought safely to their destination. Another favourable side-effect is the protection offered to the road surface. Cross section of an air spring with plastic piston: the lightweight components from ContiTech reduce weight, consumption, and emissions, and improve vehicle dynamics, safety, and comfort.
regarding transport efficiency. The challenge here is to increase the pay load while ensuring compliance with statutorily limited axle loads in order to increase the efficiency of goods transportation. Here, reduced weight not only means reduced fuel consumption and, in turn, reduced operating costs: “An important economic aspect is the opportunity to increase the load capacity. With our weight-reduced air spring family, manufacturers can save 12 to 15 kg per axle. Given a service life of 400,000 km, this means a 200 kg reduction in CO2 emissions,” said Gawinski. Compared with conventional steel pistons, the use of a special plastic

ROBUST IN THE LONG TERM The air spring system originally developed by ContiTech for the Mercedes-Benz Actros has already proven its usefulness thousands of times. The company has now managed to persuade other manufacturers to opt for this innovation. Trucks have a service life of around 24 years before being sent to a recycling company. During this time, they clock up an extremely high annual mileage, with their components frequently being exposed to extraordinarily high stress levels. Thanks to the use of plastic, no additional surface protection is necessary in order to safeguard the component's corrosion resistance. This protects the environment, and the durability of ContiTech’s air spring system is guaranteed, even under adverse weather conditions.

PRODUCT INTRODUCTION AUTOMOTIVE SPEAKER
GOLDEN POLKA DASH BOARD COVERS
Elegant Kar Accessories offers automotive speaker. Speakers take an amplified electrical signal and convert it into mechanical energy that moves the speaker cone back and forth to create sound. Sound is essentially vibrations in the air that we hear, and a speaker cone creates these vibrations. The human ear hears these vibrations in a frequency range from about 20 Hz (very low bass) to 20,000 Hz (very high notes). The most basic automotive speakers are designed to be “full range” to cover the entire frequency range. But by trying to cover the entire frequency spectrum, bass response is generally nonexistent and higher frequencies are dull. One can get more accurate sound reproduction by using an assortment of speakers dedicated to reproducing a smaller range of sound. Elegant Kar Accessories which has denoted a colossal achievement at car accessories, needs to expand to elevate its business incomes and without expansion nobody can develop.
Elegant Auto Accessories manufactures a quality range of Polka Dash Board Covers – Golden. These dashboard covers are useful in protecting the dashboard from heat and giving non-sliding space for keeping cassettes, keys and other articles. These covers are provided with head proof velcro for proper fitting to the dashboard. special jacquard and plain carpet combination; a new product to protect and cover the dash board; keeps dash board clean and cool; reduces glare on the windscreen; cassettes, keys and other things don’t slide while driving; improve the performance of car air conditioner; pocket for a mobile at a convenient place while driving; zigzag single piece sewing for accurate fitting; available in grey, silver and golden shade.

MODULAR SYSTEM FOR PROFILE MACHINING Suhner has launched a modular system for profile machining. Large-volume workpieces or long sections that are processed by machining from multiple sides, often fit poorly or not at all, in standard machines. If additionally a high output is required, the construction of a special machine makes economic sense. For such workpieces, the usual fixtures are no longer sufficient and extraordinary solutions are necessary. To fix safely and accurately a long profile or bulky workpiece over its entire length without deforming, every time is a brainteaser for the designer. In the illustrated system, the operations are done simultaneously from two sides. The Suhner modular system enables the creation of special machines for various applications of profile machining.
