dea Forum: A platform where design professionals debate and discuss design and trends throughout the year is a reality. In conjunction with DezignGenie, our design portal, we hosted the first-ever Idea Forum –A Panel Discussion on The Confluence of Indian and International Design, at ICasa Furniture earlier this month. With an esteemed panel of speakers – Nina Puri, Nina Puri Architects, Naushir DeVitre, Director, Talati & Panthaky, Neemesh Shah, Founder of KNS Architects, along with Domenico Mula, Art Director & CEO of the Italian furniture brand, Dom Edizioni - an interesting discussion on furniture trends in India, customer needs, customisation as well as experiences of the panel in the presence of industry professionals, threw up great ideas and food for thought. To get updates on IDEA FORUM mail info@dezigngenie.com This issue has great visual appeal. The stunning new Intercontinental Hotel in Chennai designed by Singapore-based CV Sydney has kept principles in mind whilst fusing traditional courtyard design with beachside luxury to great effect; and Sumeet Nath’s restaurant design for Niche in Delhi, is both elegant - with is private dining rooms – as well as creative. Style n Scissors - a new salon in Jaipur designed by Shantanu Garg uses royal palatial design elements in a contemporary format to create a stunning decor replete with colour and class; and Scandinavian design elements provide inspiration for a functional and classy design for a Bengaluru home with clean lines and a neutral colour palette, designed by Delhi-based ANSA Designs. A candid interview with global architect Omiros Emmanouilides highlights various challenges foreign architects face while in working in India; while the lead feature on kitchens throws light on ideas, trends and new products dominating the industry today. My favourite is the stunning new Gem Palace store in Mumbai designed by Dutch-born Marie-Anne Oudejans settled in Jaipur. The design inspired by a Maharaja’s garden with delightful elements of surprise‌. is breathtaking. Write to us on cwinteriors@cwinteriors.in for feedback on this issue!

Your

letters CW INTERIORS is slowly becoming my favourite publication to keep abreast with latest trends in interiors in India. It’s international standard content is flawlessly presented across its many sections and the fact that ads are neatly placed in the beginning of the magazine and don’t pop in between articles makes the reading experience very pleasant. it would be great if you could add more international content in the magazine.

For feedback, mail us at cwinteriors@ cwinteriors.in

Pushpinder Gill, Punjab

The new product section in CW INTERIORS is my favourite. I spend hours reading through your magazine with so many details packed in such a thin volume! Sonali Desai, Delhi

I loved the kids’ salon featured in the March issue of CW INTERIORS. The art pop theme was simply awesome and I’m going to take inspiration for a kids room I am designing for a client in Rajkot from that. It’s also nice to see office in India trying to meet international standards of design. The Hype Messenger office feature in your March issue made a great read! Ashwin Iyer, Bengaluru

No other magazine in India can beat the quality of content in CW INTERIORS. The Hype Messenger office was a fabulous showcase of design with an Indian context. Also loved the Flick salon in Delhi. Lucky kids who get a haircut in such a thoughtfully designed space!

I love the way CW INTERIORS covers all aspects of interiors including what is happening in the international design world. It’s a dream to be featured in the magazine some day!

Lokesh Shah, Mumbai

The March issue of CW INTERIORS was full of fantastic projects! I loved the home with its Morrocon design touches, the Hype Messenger office with its chilled out design and the children’s salon Flick with its art deco theme. Its lovely to see the Indian design scene becoming more bold and experimenting. Cheers to the team of CW INTERIORS for another fantastic issue.

I’ve been a subscriber of CW INTERIORS since six years and I have never seen a dip in the quality of its content. The look has changed several times but the way the articles are meticulously presented hasn’t changed in all these years. Rhea Kumar, Mumbai

ndian kitchens are evolving from being purely a functional cooking unit to a fashionable, convenient and contemporary multi-functional space, used not only for cooking but also for entertaining, relaxing and even working ! Factors like changing lifestyles, nuclear families, rising disposable incomes, increasing percentage of working women with limited time, supported by hi-tech appliances, accessories, automation, are all dramatically transforming the kitchens. While modular kitchens, integrated islands, elegant counter tops and faucets, contribute to the convenience and contemporary look, smart refrigerators, faucets controlled with smart phone, a coffee maker that can be turned off with an app, radiant floor heating, 30 CW Interiors | April 2016

MODULAR MATERIAL Neeti Macker, Co-Founder, The Homemakers Worldwide, modular kitchen cabinetry and shutters are made with chipboard or particle board or even MDF. But in India, most customers are comfortable with cabinetry in waterproof ply and shutters in MDF or Waterproof plywood. We are also beginning to introduce WPC (wood polymer composite) or magic wood as we call it. We have also begun to use textured pre-laminated ply as against usual white cabinetry, as it gives the kitchen an upscale look and feel, even on the inside.

FLOORING FORMAT Abhishek Saraf, Joint Managing Director, Square Foot Wooden floors are trending in Indian kitchens as they offer rich, natural colour variations and realistic textures. They come in planks, tiles and stripped look format adding breadth to any kitchen. Laminate, engineered and solid wood are available today in handcrafted, natural, strip and bamboo options to accentuate textures. Bamboo floors are more popular in kitchens as they blend beauty with durability, available in all regular wood floor styles, harder than many types of wood and are ecofriendly.

In Germany a lot of kitchen appliances are based on the concept of Internet of Things, being Wi-Fi enabled and remote controlled with minimal human intervention. Apart from being a technological marvel they increase the user- friendliness of the appliances. In addition the green concept has also entered the kitchens with several manufacturers using water and energy saving technologies.

Market Mapping The size of the Indian kitchenware industry is pegged at Rs 2,500 crore, and is expected to grow at CAGR of 45 per cent between by 2018. Both consumer and manufacturer-driven factors are reportedly contributing to their growth. No doubt it is a very niche market today, largely dominated by imported brands and with 85 per cent of the consumers located in cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, and Kolkata. Hence there is huge scope for the market to expand in the future The kitchen industry is controlled largely by the unorganised sector. The organised sector has a mix of Indian and international players

including, Fisher & Paykel, Bleu Concepts, GE Appliances, Siemens, Jindal, TTK Prestige, Bajaj, Godrej, Hindware, Electrolux, Meine Kuche, Miele, Grandeur, LG etc. International players operate in the highend segment which is a small volume, largely driven by built-in appliances. In the mid segment, there are a good number of local players and a handful of branded national players from the organised segment.

Modular Makeover Modular kitchens have already entered India in a big way. Modular kitchen market has witnessed a remarkable growth estimated to be at around Rs 1,500 crore and growing at the rate of 40 per cent per annum. “The modular kitchen concept has gained immense popularity and it is the perfect match to the day-to-day changing lifestyles. They have improved the functionality by

EUROPEAN EVOLUTION Rohin Ramchandani, Director, Grandeur

Technology Take No doubt technology has seamlessly been integrated into the kitchen and the internet of things has entered the kitchen space too. Everything from an app to turn on your coffee maker, a touch screen cook top, a wifi-enabled refrigerator etc are making their way into kitchens. “Technology is impacting our lives in all ways, Indian kitchens being no exception” states Deepak Bharadia, Managing Director, Meine Kuche India. “Modern built-in appliances like induction hobs, teppan yaki, barbecue grill, steam ovens, dishwasher etc, are gaining more acceptance. Electronic/sensor based drawer & lift-up systems are making working in a kitchen smoother and ergonomic by the day.”

With apartments getting smaller in the big cities of the world, living kitchens are becoming increasingly popular. Here open-plan kitchens are technically part of the living area of the house. As a result, the aesthetics and finish play an even bigger role. Stone-finished kitchens (in real stone and stone-laminates) are also becoming popular across Europe.

The tiles and ceramics industry has been expanding its horizons and ceramics is the best alternative for kitchen walls and floors. Greater utility, aestheticism, ease of maintenance are some of the reasons behind tile being a popular choice. Going with the current international trend, elegant and classy tiles with natural finish of wood, marble are popular among Indians. Large format tiles are also gaining popularity as they create large continuous surfaces with minimal joints.

Seconds Rohin Ramchandani, Director, Grandeur: “New materials for kitchen fronts are constantly being developed across the world. Using advanced manufacturing techniques, anti-scratch surfaces are being introduced that are functionally superior, yet aesthetic. These surfaces are especially important for the Indian market with the wet-kitchen concept and peculiar Indian cooking habits. However, these sophisticated surfaces are available with European kitchen manufacturers only as Indian production techniques have not caught up yet.”

Design Delineation Naturally with all these changes, the designing of kitchen interiors have also changed dramatically as evinced by Neeti Macker, Co-Founder, The Homemakers: “Initially the kitchens were designed keeping in mind only the basic and essential storage requirements with minimalistic budgets. But now with the kitchens making a style statement and becoming a place to entertain and spend quality time with family, many are opting for larger and open kitchens,

In Italy the trend in modular kitchen is more towards use of innovative and eco-friendly materials. These materials include tiles, cement, raisin, glass, stone, aluminium, steel and so on. In Italian and other imported modular kitchens the hardware, the profile shutter, the quality of soft closing runners the lacquering and finishing etc. are of high standard and completely machine made. This is why many Indians prefer imported modular kitchens.

KITCHEN TRENDS OVER DECADES ACROSS THE GLOBE

In Europe and in India the kitchen is more than just a cooking place today with many going for open kitchens that extend to other areas and serve as the hub for dining, social gatherings and festivities. Neutral shades continue to reign with shades of beige, gray, and white preferred for refreshed walls, while white-painted and medium-light wood preferred for cabinets. TILE TREND Ashok Goyal,

A touch of woody and homely appearance is created by this Cotto Royale ceramic wall tiles which are joint free and stain resistant. Price: `78/ sq ft

Chief Executive Officer Nitco The most notable trends for kitchen revolve around the notions of more variety, organic textures, and looks that combined rusticity and refinement. Trending are décor tiles with intricate pattern of hand crafted designs from world heritage and art forms. Also designs inspired by the world of soft furnishings, featuring textured surfaces and surfaces that mimic fabric are making a strong showing. Tile that looks like wood are hitting the stride. In colours tiles with corrosion inspired warm colours, muted palette that create a soft glow are in vogue. Textures that create optical illusions and create intricate patterns rising off the surface of the tile are preferred.

design is not as high on Indian customer’s list, many environmentally conscious manufacturers are already focusing on manufacturing eco-friendly products like washing machines with silent operation, cold wash options that save energy and jet systems that save water, low energy consumption induction hobs, kitchen units made from renewable and biodegradable materials etc.

Keeping pace with the time, kitchen floors and walls too have moved away from the traditional options and designs. Abhishek Somany, Managing Director, Somany Ceramics lists out the reasons behind tiles popularity. “Tiles are used in kitchens for various reasons. effectiveโ . Seconds Ashok Goyal, Chief Executive Officer Nitco Limited, โ With seemingly unlimited tile lines available today, tiles not only hold aesthetic value, but also offer durability, and ease of maintenance. It is important to consider the overall durability of the floor covering, including longevity, colorfastness and ease of stain-removal while selecting the floorings for kitchen.โ

Lighting Leads Lighting which was overlooked earlier is now receiving special attention with focus on spot lighting rather than the traditional lighting systems. Most kitchens today have different lighting sources that can be utilised as per requirement, like overhead and recessed lighting to illuminate the room along with concentrated lighting to light up the workspace areas. โ Many kinds of lights are available in the market today. Table lamps, desk lamps, wall lamps, kitchen island and pool table lights are some of the task lightings used in the kitchens to give extra rays of light and to spruce up the dull corners. Pendants are

another popular form of light that are mainly used for decorative purposes. For wall-lighting, there can be nothing better than scones. The requirement may also change throughout the day -for example, you may want brighter light in the evening but only soft light in the middle of the night. So it is very important to have lighting control in your kitchen to obtain just the right light level and ambience you wantโ advises Manjul Trehan, Country Head & Director Sales, Lutron Electronics -India & SAARC.

Future Forward In the decades ahead, Indian kitchens are definitely set to witness more dynamic and dramatic changes keeping in line with international trends. The movement will be more towards merging of kitchens and open/garden spaces, ergonomic design, efficient storage space, ultra convenience, usage of hi-tech intelligent interactive appliances, energy monitoring etc. i TEXT: Janaki

…virtual world Colours and planters are used well to distinguish spaces in the office of NK Jain & Sons.

In a crowded high-rise complex cluttered with offices, it is not easy to stand out. Perhaps it helps to get noticed when the palette is neutral and the long-held ideals of Victorian design are inverted. The classical gets a modern-take with art and design blurring their individual stance. That is what 42 mm Architecture, a New Delhi-based multidisciplinary design firm, has done to the office of realtors NK Jain & Sons in Gurgaon’s Time Tower.

neutral repetitiveness in bright green. Interestingly, the map spills over to the grey/ white floor. On the grey granite floor with leather finish, steel circles are inlaid into a Qutab Minar and turned into a recognisable part of the city. If one looks harder, there’s the logo of the 50-year old company included abstrusely. On the left side, a padded velvet wall extends into a sofa in the waiting area.

What’s HOT and What’s NOT? What’s hot: Reclaimed wood panels, installations, exposed concrete, green wall are becoming more prominent. Open office is hot with a collaborative work space which facilitates more interaction and idea generation. What’s not: Integrating pop colours on accent walls and fixed or permanent layouts are out. It is giving way to warm and neutral palette with flexibility for everchanging work space.

meticulously on wood. The underlying concept of interior language travels in all elements - wall paneling, flooring, lights and furniture. Lines of the door meet meticulously with the lights on the ceiling and the conference room table made of medium density fibre board (MDF) with matte PU finish complements the etchings on the granite. Throughout, the floor (except outdoor space) is white engineered wood. With definite demarcated work spaces, the office has a non-clutter reception area, two large cabins, one big and two conference rooms, a work-station area, kitchenette and a plush bathroom with shower. Three stepup from the reception area, the office acquires an outdoorsy look into two different

spaces - one with blue/white dĂŠcor that reminds one of decks on marinas and the other in burnt sienna with rattan furniture and a swing. The outdoor space adds an additional 1,200 sq ft to the office and is rimmed with planters that block the cluttered skyline of Gurgaon.

Brothers’s cabins In the 3,500 sq ft space, the pride of place is set aside for the large cabins of Ashwin and Naveen, the owners. In the 175-sq ft cabin

of Ashwin, grey rules with only two white elements. The wood panelling looks like art installation with steel inlays and the letter A melded into the grey wooden panel that doubles up as storage space. The greys and whites are in continuum in the 225-sq ft cabin of Naveen Jain. Here, white is more dominant and grey takes a backseat. The back-lit lacquered back wall that resembles a book shelf catches the eye. Custom-made furniture and the blinds opening into a green view adds to the allure of the space.

The main conference room has a large glass-top table; the wood walls have steel lines running symmetrically that is mirrored on the ceiling and the other glass wall.

R&D & more R&D For Adreesh Chakraborty, of 42 mm Architecture, who led this project, NK Jain & Sons’ office was one of most design and labour-intensive projects which took about a year from the drawing board to completion. 42mm sourced from various vendors and 20-people worked onsite constantly for 9 months. Priyanka Khanna, one of the founders of 42mm, admits the 9 months is a long time to work on the interiors of a 3,5000 sq ft space and attributes the delay to continuous research to get everything right. 50 CW Interiors | April 2016

“Tremendous amount of research and analysis went into this project to get the right finish and look in place. Visual aesthetics are essential yet we didn’t want to comprise on durability and functionality at any cost. The overall exercise of getting the right samples was a challenging part which required series of discussions, rejections and failures before we achieved the desired results,” she adds. The Jain brothers wanted a conventional, classical Victorian look for the firm’s first corporate office. Chakraborty and Khanna tweaked the Victorian design methodology and turned the office of NK Jain & Sons into a very distinctive space where grey, black, white, beige rule, steel serves as a versatile medium, art and design blur their differences and the classical gets a modern makeover. i TOTAL AREA: 3,500 TEXT: Preeti

Allowing the project’s surroundings to influence the interiors always works wonders, and if the said project happens to be in Rajasthan, a visual treat is an absolute given. Architect Shantanu Garg infuses the vibrancy of the sandy state into a modern setting to create a salon that’s designed as an experience. The entrance is a harbinger of the theme set inside with the exterior representing a transition of art deco and contemporary styles through multi-level planes that create a sense of depth. Born in Greece and educated in Australia, Omiros Emmanouilides became the youngest registered practising Architect in Australia in 1981. In 1987, he founded O1A, which currently has offices in Melbourne and Abu Dhabi and collaborates with various associate offices in the Asia-Pacific region and Europe. A design-orientated practice, providing a unique combination of award winning design skills and an accurate commercial awareness, O1A is committed to producing innovative, contemporary, efficient and sustainable projects of distinction that meet and exceed the needs of both developers and end users. Noted for producing many award winning buildings of prominence such as the Yas Island Yacht Club and Marina Facilities on the F1 track in Abu Dhabi, UAE, and the Health Spa and Gymnasium for His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum in Dubai, Omiros has demonstrated his understanding of what it takes to achieve a successful project. SUMISHA GILOTRA chats with Emmanouilides about his work and global experience.

Tell us about your journey from Australia to the Middle East. The initial expansion is never a conscious effort. Architects are not business people. We just do our work and we try to do it as well as possible. So, it’s usually through word-ofmouth that one project leads to another. We architects are all in love with the design process and we don’t think enough about the business until later when the business gets too big or you finish a project and then you don’t have another one. These are the two primary directives where you start to recall your thoughts into the business aspect of architectural practice.

How did you come to the Middle East and eventually to India?

The bedroom of the show flat done for Dosti Imperia for Dosti Realty.

I was invited to the Middle East for a conference. However, my fortune took me all the way to China, for designing hospitals. We started our work in Australia with residences and ended up doing hospitals in China, and from there we came to the Middle East. When I was in the Middle East, a young engineer contacted me and asked me to come to India and see whether

we can work together. In 2009, I started work in India.

Tell us about your projects in India. In India, we did two large residential projects (large from the point of view of Australians) with the Omaxe group in Delhi. They were two 35-storey towers that set the tone for the high rise residential development in Noida. Then I designed a show flat for Dosti Group, which was another interesting experience because in a show flat you have so much freedom. This was one of our most enjoyable experiences in India because Dosti was a good client, never interfered with our work and paid our fees on time. That’s a big hurdle in working in India, because clients

back out even after reaching an agreement and the legal system here is almost nonexistent. We started another project in Goa. It was a large master planning project for a Pune group. The project stopped midway because of some crisis. We also got the opportunity to work with vaastu shastra for a home for a large successful family in Kolkata. There are only a few people that are really worth working with in India in terms of clients. The people are great but the developers have got a mindset of doing things on the run and they don’t want to pay the right fees.

What are your thoughts on vaastu shastra? Vaastu shastra like Feng Shui are the simple man’s planning guidelines. They make good sense but are often generalised. They mean nothing if you don’t have design confidence and sensitivity. They have shortcomings, too. But while designing in different parts of the world you have to be sensitive to different cultures. You cannot ignore people’s belief systems. Vaastu shastra is also a belief system. So, being a good designer you have to be sensitive. You have to somehow respond, manipulate and address those issues. It’s a further challenge to look at. I don’t holistically agree with it but I don’t disagree with it either.

How would you define your design style without labelling it? Sensitive. There is no style as such. Design is about a response. You need to be responsive. If you have looked at my work it can be super hi-tech and highly iconic or it can be minimalistic. It all depends on who I am designing for and where I am designing. If you are following a response, you are always appropriate.

What has been your most interesting work so far?

There are many aspects of interesting. For interesting in terms of design, I am working on a 44 storey in Azerbaijan in Baku, which is a fully rotating, zero carbon emission building. So, the whole building will be rotating 360 degrees every 25 hours in Azerbaijan.

www.CWinteriors.in

The dining area of the Dosti Imperia show flat.

From my completed projects, the Yas Island Hotel in Abu Dhabi on Formula One Marina is probably the most interesting for me and the most challenging. Currently, we are doing an interesting residential development in Melbourne on the shore lines.

Do you have any advice for Indian architects? You have a socio economic problem and your low cost housing the way it is being blended or segregated is not appropriate. It still carries on this stigma of existence of different classes. The designer needs to be conscious and sensitive. I know the developers are pushing for segregation because they don’t think they can achieve the prices that they should be able to achieve. The greater population needs to be treated with dignity and respect and should have equal and amicable facilities. That’s a challenge that needs to be addressed by your architects. Also Indian culture has a lot to offer and it shouldn’t be ignored. But that doesn’t mean you copy Indian architecture everywhere.

You have got great topography, especially in Mumbai. But humans have destroyed it and continue to do so as there is no respect and regard to the environment. Greed is ruling everywhere you go. Your designers need to show confidence in order to convince the developer that there is more than one way of making pleasant living environment. i

GEM The Mumbai branch of Jaipur’s legendary Gem Palace store, designed by Marie-Anne Oudejans, is a confluence of European and Indian design elements. Opulent jewellery has been the mainstay of royalty. When a brand that represents affluence, Jaipur’s Gem Palace, decided to set up shop in Mumbai, its store had to flaunt a regal demeanour. Designed by Dutch-born and Jaipur-based designer Marie-Anne Oudejans, the new Gem Palace at Dhanraj Mahal, Colaba, lives up to its name and reputation.

The emerald green walls embellished with gold finishing recreates the aura of the royal era in a lavish and contemporaneous setting that exudes elegance. “We wanted the store design to be assuring of fine taste and luxury to a buyer,” says Siddharth Kasliwal, Owner, as he goes on to tell us that the design is “an amalgamation of Indian Heritage with European influences.” Previously a back office of a restaurant, the location appealed to Kasliwal because of its arches and hand-painted doors, which transport you to the havelis of Rajasthan. Its current avatar is reminiscent of a modern day museum in Paris. “The USP of the store is the feel of Rajasthan in the bustling city of Mumbai. When I step in, I feel like I am back home in Jaipur. This achievement is solely credited to Marie Anne,” he proudly proclaims.

The new Intercontinental Hotel in Chennai showcases traditional elements underscored by luxury, which dwell within the framework of sustainable design.

Standing by the picturesque Bay of Bengal, the Intercontinental Hotel, Mahabalipuram, Chennai, is an architectural delight. Based on ancient practise of vaastu shastra and the aesthetics of the Golden Mean, the hotel is designed by CV Sydney, an offshoot of the renowned Singapore-based Kerry Hill Design firm. This hotel also incorporates sustainable design elements achieved through innovative design solutions using suitable materials, fixtures and fittings aimed at a Platinum LEED rating from the US Green Building Council.

Space planning The resort structure is bordered by a covered walkway that encloses a central courtyard of 79,653 sq ft, around which the 105 guestrooms are positioned. This generous

landscaped courtyard includes a swimming pool, a dancing platform floating above a large pond, a terrace and a sunken lounge. All these elements of orthogonal shape intersect one another, thereby connecting the public spaces. The suites capitalise on the ocean views and landscaped garden and allow the guests to relax in luxury, while the public areas are designed to facilitate social interaction.

It depicts a gridded ensemble of built forms and open spaces, which contributes in creating a socially conducive environment. The wall illustrates the design of the resort, especially the contours of the large inner courtyard, which can be used as a community space, much like a big open living room.

Spatial spa The spa at The Intercontinental is called Pranna and it comes with a central and naturally formed pond, which is a self sustaining water body. An efficient biofiltration system prevents eutrophication (natural pollution) of the pond due to natural components of local fishes such as rohu and mahseer. The nutrients for the fishes are provided by the aquatic plants in the pond, thereby eliminating the need for artificial fish food.

These floral sculptures are visible from every end of the surrounding corridor. …main course One of the two private dining rooms has a fireplace and a lamp with cricket bat legs which Tarun Grover, the owner picked from Dubai.

Not many restaurants live up to their name. Niche, the recently-launched Bistro & Bar in New Delhi’s upmarket Connaught Place, does in every niche of its 9,000 sq ft space spread over two floors. A large wooden door opens into an absolutely brown space with a set of Thailand-sourced high chairs on left and a bar counter in front. Dark brown holds sway in the bar area which creates a niche for itself as high-seating area distinct from other neatly divided space of the restaurant. The bar counter is dark, so are the walls where miniature sculpted men hanging from ropes add a hint of intrigue.

High-five for high seats A few steps from the high-seating area and Niche suddenly changes colour. The dark environment of the bar makes way for the blue of the sky that peeps through a high atrium made of 12mm hardened glass sheets held together with green bars. 10-12 mm glass sheets are sandwiched with a 12mm space filled with argon gas and topped with another 12mm sheet making the atrium 78 CW Interiors | April 2016

extremely sturdy and heat proof. The lower end of the atrium glass ceiling is rimmed with brown leather chesterfield made of 6-8 inch foam with a quilted look. This niche has brown furniture with white canvas upholstery. On the left of the dining area is a stage for live gigs with a black back wall lit with very fascinating cube-shape lights sourced from Dubai.

A word-y wall What catches the eye in the atrium area is a 11x8 ft three-sided wall with words arranged vertically. The basic material of the letters is wood but they are topped with different materials – acrylic, wood, paint, cloth, canvas, paper. A few of them have prints, others monochromatic. For Tarun Arora, the owner, this wall was the most difficult ‘to get it right’. The wall was torn down three times; he repeatedly brainstormed with graphic designer Aditi Sood, who has done the branding for Niche. With a degree in Mathematics from UC Berkeley, Tarun has an idea about symmetry and

Wide columns covered in slate separate the atrium area from the two private dining rooms. Not rooms, actually, but very tidily demarcated areas with plush sofas, a tall lamp with cricket bats as legs, fireplace, and black/white framed photographs of musical legends adding a touch of class to the corner PDRs. The back door open into a 400 sq ft 30-seater open air space with a very casual dĂŠcor. The front terrace has rattan furniture with orange cushions and carries forward the grey vitrified tiled flooring from the main area.

had to be halted several times due to municipal laws. But he was not ready to give up his dream of creating a very specific niche. Both literally and metaphorically. He hired New Delhi-based Studio Us firm for design and interiors. For furniture, he travelled to China, Thailand and the Philippines; the sculpted hanging men came from London; from Dubai he picked up the cricket bat lamp and the cube lights on the stage back wall. on the grey-brown palette. No second thoughts on that. In Niche, design is not merely about aesthetics, it brings along a repeat value. Because of its various niches, one can step into the restaurant 7-8 times, occupy a different corner and get an entirely different feel every time. Brown/grey rule the 9,000 sq ft space, yet there is no colour monotony. As Tarun says, “Niche is about various niches through which I want to create a niche in the restaurant sector.” Niche surely lives up to its name. i

SCANDANAVIAN INFLUENCES 82 CW Interiors | April 2016

Delhi-based Ansa Interiors transform a home into a Scandinavian masterpiece.

Inspiration for design can come from unexpected quarters. In the case of this residence, designed by Ansa Interiors, the design inspiration originates from the deep recesses of history – namely the early 20th century Scandinavian era. Houses in this era portrayed a democratic design, were easily accessible and had an aura of affordable beauty. This Scandinavian design concept of ‘beautiful things that make your life better’ is reconfigured in this spectacular house, outfitted by Ankush Aggarwal, Principal Architect, Ansa Interiors. Space in this contemporary abode flows like water, delineating functional areas and fusing them together at the same time. For instance the living room flows into the dining area and family lounge while the kitchen has neatly aligned pantry, wet area and breakfast counter. The Scandinavian theme courses effortlessly through the bedrooms, too.

The living room flows into the dining area which is separated from the family area with a simple partition.

To create a mermerising environment for the guests, time honoured chandeliers have been installed in the living area, while the décor sports a touch of grey and blue for neutral effect. The large windows instantly connect you with nature. The design team maintained its focus on the architectural elements of the family areas of the house and thereby reinforced a modern sensibility to the interiors. The kitchen has been placed closer to the dining and bar areas for better expediency. The master bedroom, boasting maturity in its herringbone wooden flooring, embroidered carpet, leather panelled wall and a spirited interpretation of grandfather’s relaxer, reminds you of long-forgotten simplicity. This room has a king-sized bed and his-andher wardrobes that demarcate the bathroom space, which flaunts twin vanities.

The herringbone wooden flooring, embroidered carpet, leather panelled wall lend a classic look to the master bedroom.

The design elements used in this project are inspired by nature. The designers have carefully selected each element for its high quality and sophistication without the overwhelming tone of heaviness.

The white dominant room uses LED lights and a glass partition, lending an exclusive look to the room.

The materials used for the interiors include Italian tiles and mosaics for the bathroom. Dated features that bring out the Scandinavian theme comprise a rough brick wall painted in white with accent colours like olive green added to the wood veneers for that old world feel in the bedroom. The plethora of seashell accessories creates the impression of walking on the beach. The second bedroom has white deco in keeping with its old parameters.

Meet the designer Ankush Aggarwal FIRM: Ansa Interiors founded in 2003. FIRM SPECIALISATION: Challenging the conventional notions and making every project a landmark in the field of design. DESIGN PHILOSOPHY: ‘Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication’ as quoted by Leonardo Da Vinci.

Lighting up The lighting is delightfully clever. LED has been used in the entire house as it is ecofriendly. The design scheme for lights is amicable yet dramatic. It combines a layer of illuminations in the dining area, drawling lights in the shelves, ceiling LED, decorative chandeliers, dimmers and occupancy sensors as well as Programmable Scene Controllers pre-set with different lighting themes. The different functional categories of light – ambient, task, accent and decorative – are in layers, creating a spectacular view.

FAVOURITE ARCHITECT/DESIGNER: Dale Chihuly – glass artist. The way he transfuses life into something lifeless like glass is praiseworthy.

This house exemplifies the maxim of oldworld-charm-meets-modern-sensibility. The unusual Scandinavian inspiration of the interiors comes as a breath of fresh air for i design enthusiasts. TOTAL AREA: 5,200 TEXT: Latika

Convergence of ideas

www.CWinteriors.in

CW Interiors and DezignGenie.com present the Idea Forum – Confluence of Indian and International Design.

From L to R: Architect Neemesh Shah, Co-Founder, KNS Architects, Falguni Padode, Group Managing Editor, ASAPP Info Global Group, Architect Nina Puri, Principal Architect, Nina Puri Architects, Domenico Mula, Art Director, Dom Edizioni, Abha Gupta, Founder, ICasa Furniture, Naushir DeVitre, Chairman & Founder, Talati & Panthaky Associated, Priyanka Padode, CEO, DezignGenie.com, Simona Raccagni, Marketing Manager, Dom Edizioni, daughter of Domenico Mula.

A platform where design professionals meet and discuss interior trends and furniture design is not a mere idea anymore! We are often unable to connect with the design fraternity in large settings such as conferences and trade fairs. That’s why CW INTERIORS and DezignGenie.com had organised the first ever Idea Forum – a panel discussion on the confluence of Indian and international design, hosted by ICasa Furniture on the 8th March, 2016, at the host’s exquisite showroom at Raghuvanshi Mills. The format for the forum was intimate, involving not more than 40 people, who can be inspired and connect with industry stalwarts on relevant topics. The first Idea Forum comprised a panel of esteemed speakers such as Architect Nina Puri, Neemesh Shah, Founder, KNS Architects and Naushir DeVitre, Director of Talati and Panthaky Associated, along with Domenico Mula, Art Director and CEO, Dom Edizioni. Architect Neemesh Shah established his company KNS Architects in 1997 along with his two partners. He has carved a niche for himself in the high-end residential and commercial architecture as well as interiors. He firmly believes that change is the only constant in life. Nina Puri begun her practice in 1992 and her repertoire of projects include private homes and offices rendered with a wide palette of

Naushir DeVitre is the Director and Partner of Talati and Panthaky Associated Designers LLP. He has been involved in the field of architecture and interior design for over five decades having handled multiple projects all over the country. An extremely respected member in the design fraternity, he is a member of the Associate of the Indian Institute of Architects, Indian Institute of Interior Designs, India Green Building Council (IGBC) and is a proponent of LEED practices.

Speakers talk The panel discussion was an amalgamation of different school of thoughts aligned in the direction of design. Mula, who spoke in Italian (translated here), said, “I love Indian tastes. It is very important for me to match my furniture to the tastefulness and design of the Indian people. I totally agree that my furniture has to be high level of design and comfort, but is also completely customisable to the tastes of the market.” Rather than going to trade fairs, which is confusing for buyers, it is beneficial to have international brands enter the Indian market through a channel where ‘touch and feel’ is possible. Hands-on experience is important in the Indian market and hence it gravitates

more towards customisation. Customised furniture is always preferred to set pieces. DeVitre mentioned that for the customer look and comfort comes first, followed by price point. Speaking of the latest trends of 2016, it was cited that space saving furniture is making waves in Mumbai, but in a city like Delhi it doesn’t hold much importance as space is not a constraint there. Minimalistic designs are more popular in Mumbai than in Delhi, and the climatic differences also bring a change in the taste of furniture design in the cities. The participants were provided with insightful discussions and exchange of ideas that took place at the event and are already looking forward to the next Idea Forum. With the idea of making this a regular event, the organisers aim to bring together industry stalwarts and other professionals and engage them in a meaningful discussion to shed light on myriad aspects of the design, interior and architecture industry. To receive regular updates on the Idea Forum and DezignGenie, mail: info@dezigngenie.com. Iconic structure Kengo Kuma, a Japanese practice, has been assigned its first Australian project by Darling Harbour. It is to design a new civic and creative centre in Sydney. The 30-metre-tall, wood-clad ‘Darling Exchange’ will comprise six stories and provide space for a ground-floor market hall, library, childcare centre, makerspace and additional programme for start-ups as well as a rooftop bar and restaurant. The building will have a circular geometry, which will make it accessible from different directions. The project will connect directly to a 2700-sq-mt public ‘Darling Square’ designed by Australian landscape firm Aspect Studios. Once approved, the project plans to open in 2018.

Repurposing building Designing speed The Seibu Group has commissioned Kazuyo Sejima to design a new express train for Japan. This Limited Express train is supposed to be a ‘friendly’ addition to the company’s ‘Red Arrow’ series. The series boasts brightly coloured, traditional designs that stand out from the surroundings. The initial concept of the train reveals a light, semi-transparent design, much like Sejima’s architecture, which allows the train to blend into the landscape. The Pritzker Prize-winning architect and co-founder of SANAA will design the train’s exterior and interior. It is expected to complete in 2018. 88 CW Interiors | April 2016

OMA has landed a commission to transform four warehouses on Dubai’s Alserkal Avenue into a new multi-purpose venue. This will be OMA’s first project in the United Arab Emirates and it will connect local architects and artists. The flexible space will feature four 8.10-metre moveable walls, allowing for a number of spatial configurations to host public events, art exhibitions, performances and conferences. Full-height transparent sliding doors will mark the entrance, while the existing exterior shell will be wrapped in a customised concrete spray. The new venue is expected to open in Fall 2016.
