Post Budget Vibrations India: Sustained Growth According to Macquarie, the growth momentum in the construction equipment (CE) segment has sustained in India, despite withdrawal of discounts and price increases. Also, purchases were being done primarily by first-time buyers. Most of the companies have seen marked improvement in volumes since late 2015 and the trend has sustained in 2016 to date. Another key indicator from their discussions with companies is that usage patterns of existing fleets have improved, evident from higher spare part sales. KHL’s report on top ranking global CE majors indicates tumultuous changes — industry sales fell to US$ 109 billion at the depths of the global financial crisis, and it was also the sharpest year-on-year fall in revenues since those dark days. From China, Shantui went down seven places to No. 38; LiuGong slipped six places to No. 22; while XCMG was the only Chinese manufacturer remaining in the Top Ten. Sany dropped out of the top 10 making way for JCB to join the elite top 10. Although Caterpillar and Komatsu retained 1 and 2 positions respectively, Terex displaced Hitachi for number 3, Liebherr has climbed above Volvo and John Deere, and Doosan occupies the eighth spot. 3rd Annual Equipment India Awards and CEO FORUM on Make in India – Fuel Infra, organised at FICCI auditorium, Delhi on March 16, 2016 saw the CE industry dignitaries gather to celebrate the spirit of the construction equipment industry. A spellbound audience listened to many headwinds and tailwinds to Fuel Infra deliberated by industry veterans. Bestseller awards were conferred in 12 equipment categories. Ramesh Palagiri, Managing Director, Wirtgen India was adjudged “The Person of the Year” by an independent jury of eminent professionals.

A

utomated Guided Vehicles have been scurrying around plants in one form or another for decades already. But none of them have ever been quite like these. John Deere’s fleet will mark the latest deployment of OTTO 1500 — a fully self-driving, autonomous robotic vehicle built by Clearpath Robotics. The machines are capable of transporting up to 3,000 lb of goods through congested plant and warehouse environments without the need for drivers, supervision, or guidance infrastructure. That last detail is what makes this technology exciting. OTTO taps into the same sensor-driven, high-computing backbone of Google’s self-driving car to safely and efficiently transport supplies along the same plant and warehouse paths populated by workers and equipment. 22

Sennebogen electric material handler offers mobility

T

he advantages of an electric material handler combined with the flexibility of a mobile machine is what the Sennebogen 821 offers with its integrated powerpack. At first glance, the Sennebogen 821 M “E” appears to be an ordinary material handler. However, as soon as the operator turns the key, you hear the difference. Or, rather, you don’t — the quiet 90 kW electric motor starts up and goes to work. It’s only then you notice the cable

plugged into the undercarriage. Since the Sennebogen 821 now working at the MEAB waste recycling center is primarily used indoors, the site’s decisionmakers had quickly opted for electric drive. In addition to low operating and service costs, the electric machine eliminates any need for exhaust treatment and particulate filters in the work zone. The electrical power itself is environmentally friendly, generated just a few meters away EI using landfill gas.

material handling: meteoric rise

Warehousing and inter modal logistics are paving the way forward for material handling equipment (MHE) in India.

M

odern warehousing and inter modal logistics industry initiatives in India, have redefined how business is conducted in the country in most industry sectors as well as its geographic regions. Value additions like lowest transportation costs; in-time delivery of products; removal of intermediaries in the business value chain; online transactions direct to retail or dealers; lowest cost to end users; ease of doing business and increased profitability for the manufacturers, are fuelling the growth of this sector to double digit levels, year on year. The entry of international majors and large corporate houses in the e-commerce space has opened new doors for this sector’s distribution systems for doorstep deliveries of items like apparels, FMCG products, white line appliances, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, groceries and very recently automobiles! All these developments require state-of-the-art, product specific warehousing management coupled with high-tech non polluting, software enabled high productivity and sometimes 28

fully or semi-automatic, material handling equipment and systems. Piush Goyal, Managing Director, Kelley Material Handling Equipment India Pvt Ltd is very optimistic, “The logistics industry in India is witnessing a boom leading to capacity enhancement by all major and medium size players. The total modern warehousing demand in the year 2014 was 900 million sq ft and the same is expected to grow to around 1,500 million sq. feet by 2019. Growth of the cold chain industry is yet another opportunity, which has witnessed CAGR of 25 per cent. The MHE industry in India is still at a nascent stage compared to China, which is around 25 times larger than present levels here. The e-commerce, 3PL, multi-brand retail and auto component will be the key growth drivers for this sector going forward.” “The market size of logistics, distribution and warehouses to a large extent depends on the manufacturing and trade sector. Due to the slow growth in manufacturing over the last few years, logistics and sales, of material handling has seen

subdued growth. With the Prime Minister’s ambitious plan of “Make In India” taking root, we expect to see good growth in manufacturing and consequently in logistics and distribution activities for the next few years,” informs Cavas Dumasia, Vice President - Sales & Marketing, Godrej Material Handling Division. Ramesh Babu, Managing Director, Seashell Logistics Pvt Ltd provides the viewpoint from the user’s perspective, “The Indian warehousing and logistics industry is gradually getting redefined from the conventional to modern setups with automation, multi-rack and palletisation infrastructure. After GST coming into effect, the national warehousing network would be revamped, it could be considered as a single largest industry-wide opportunity to consider smart and strategic warehousing as a cost-saving opportunity across the supply chain, instead of a capital-intensive investment for federal tax reasons. With the emergence of a new sector of e-commerce and retail business houses, use of latest technology for efficient warehousing,

supply chain management is going to be a necessity.

Growing Story

Every now and then, new redefinitions are fuelling the growth of this huge market. Some mixed reactions prevail in the industry but overall, there is a positive sentiment. “The warehousing industry in India is currently valued at nearly Rs 850 billion to Rs 900 billion and is currently growing at 15-18 per cent since the last few years. The unorganised sector will continue to dominate, accounting for around 80-90 per cent of the industry. Of the organised sector, the industrial segment will constitute a higher share of warehousing demand, like engineering, automotive, chemicals, pharmaceutical and electronics goods. As far as geography is concerned, warehouse demand will be more in industrialised states and major markets for the specific industry. In the long run we see the industry will have exponential growth with high level of organised players providing 3PL services to manufacturing and retail sector, thereby contributing to more GDP and employment,” says Ramesh Babu. Manojit Acharya, Managing Director, Jungheinrich Lift Truck India Pvt Ltd, states,“The warehouse market in India is growing faster than the GDP. The warehouse market will continue to grow at a CAGR of 12-13 per cent in the coming years. The warehouse market is largely dominated by the unorganised sector (90 per cent). The current market size is approximately Rs 800 billion.” He adds, “With the growth in the economy, per capita consumption, policy change by government, and the Make in India initiative, the intermodal logistics (e.g.,

Articulated forklift which can work in aisle 2.2 m and lift pallets as high as 12.5 m. surface transport, air and sea) will also grow significantly. The growth prognosis is CAGR of 14-15 per cent during FY2016-2020. The recent Budget will spur rural demand and infrastructure growth. Agri-warehousing, cold chain, liquid and container storage will gain further momentum.” According to Kamlesh Shah, Managing Director, Kompress India Pvt Ltd, “Some of the leading market research companies say this industry is around Rs 560 billion (Rs 5,600 crore) which will include the gamut of warehousing, manufacturing, storage, all kinds of MHEs and automation systems. does not include inter modal logistics and the nodal hubs, and the e-commerce logistics. This is a concept which is coming up or will be very well thought of only after the introduction of GST.With the introduction of GST, the concept of independent warehouses will emerge faster.A lot of players will start to expand and innovate as well as provide high technology equipment because GST will allow them to be able to supply to different states and cities with minimum tax implications. Automation is another major thing to push forward in the future as many medium and small players are now looking forward to increasing their efficiency in operations by way of introducing new automation and software to improve their own efficiencies.” Sunil K Gupta, CEO & MD, KION India Pvt Ltd, also confirms, “The Indian logistics market is estimated to grow anywhere between CAGR 12-14 per cent during the next five years.” Acharya concurs, “The growth prognosis is CAGR 14-15 per cent during FY2016-2020. For this industry to register a continuous year-on-year profitable growth, the equipment manufacturers and warehousing or logistics companies need to join hands in achieving the highest levels of operation efficiency. Further, the expected high growth rate, in this sector, will not be localised to any geographical region of the country nor restricted to currently established portfolio of products. In fact to scale the growth will be phenomenal irrespective of the perceived or projected CAGR. Therefore, there will be an undisputable need for operational excellence. In turn, the industry is ready. Goyal gives an innovative definition to Kelley’s products, “There is nothing specific that a customer in India will need to specifically suit our machines. The only need is the customers’ “will” to switch to the globally most advanced technology. You can leave the rest to my engineers, who will visit your site at pre- and post-project stage to carry out the site survey. With growth in the economy, the aspiration of the consumer and manufacturing industry will also be increasing. This requires adoption of new technology and optimising the operational capabilities to be competitive. • Demand for high-end services and infrastructure: With the emergence of new sectors like e-commerce, there’s the need for high end services with transparency. Delivery of consignments in no time and replenishment of goods quickly is also required. This requires operational excellence in supply chain management. • Global competition and practices: In the global village the global trade demand, requirements and practices become part of the decisive factors for supply chain management. To be competitive with the global competitors, operational excellence is a must. • Rising share of organised retail: In India, a large part of supply chain management is still under the unorganised sector and this sector has very low level of adaptability for technology vis-à-vis operational excellence. The growth of organised industry sectors such as retail, automotive, manufacturing, pharmaceutical and agriculture in India, is expected to give rise to more organised integrated supply chain companies. GST implementation: This is considered as the biggest reform in commercial taxation in India after 1947. The introduction of GST will result in the Indian manufacturing sector being globally competitive and will promote entrepreneurial initiatives and economic activity, on the whole. Most of the manufacturers have constructed regional warehouses of their own to avoid interstate taxes. But under GST, they can streamline their operations and outsource their operations to 3PLs to save up to 20 per cent. -Ramesh Babu, Managing Director, Seashell Logistics Pvt Ltd managing a transport network and godowns towards a more integrated supply chain management system. In order to understand the evolution of the logistics sector in India, it is better to understand the competing markets that have moved ahead in the value chain. The USA is considered to be the most evolved logistics market in the world and can be used as a benchmark to compare with the Indian market. The USA spends 9 per cent of its GDP on logistics; in comparison to it India spends nearly 13 per cent of its GDP in logistics.

India’s proportionate expenditure on transportation is nearly double that of the USA’s despite having only one-third of its landmass. This indicates requirement for more efficient transportation service in India. USA’s logistics sector has a value of almost 10 times that of the Indian logistics sector.Yet the USA logistics sector employs only one-tenth the number of people that the Indian logistics sector does. The reason for such a difference is that the logistics sector in developed economies is highly mechanised and uses automation extensively unlike

in India where even today it is largely dependent on the labour force. There is significant scope for growth and efficiency in India’s warehousing and supply chain management.” Shah concurs along similar lines, ”The warehousing industry is evolving in India. In developed markets like Europe, US and other Western countries it has already been there for a long time. In India, the concept of proper warehousing started just 10 years back. So this is here to grow as every industry requires warehousing so also the storage solutions and MHE. For example, in every airport coming up there is a cargo facility attached to it. So, the storage and material handling segment can expect good growth in the coming years.” Gupta says, “Our Sales drivers are efficiency based engineered products with Value for Money proposition involving the complete product life cycle enabling customers to enjoy the cost benefits.”

Conclusion

The Material Handling industry especially with relation to the Industrial Trucks is very small in size vis-à-vis markets in other countries of equivalent economic size. While the awareness for the need of mechanised handling is increasing at a faster clip than before, certain products and aspects continue to be a constraint for this industry. Lack of standards for palletisation; unsafe lifting and handling practices largely prevalent in small scale industries or unorganised sector and people expected to lift loads heavier than 25 kg which is not a practice in most well established economies worldwide, are all accepted situations impeding the growth of this sector in India. Despite the same, the Material Handling solution providers, warehousing and intermodal logistics combine is poised in a very favourable spot and the nation as whole looking forward to witness how the industry overcomes the challenges, works around the pain points and fructifies the available opportunities, commensurate with the projections. Container Handling: Future’s Bright

Container traffic in India has outpaced the global growth rates and is expected to grow 3-4 times in the near future, which throws up unprecedented opportunities for container-specific handling equipment.

n line with global trends, India also followed suit to create more container handling facilities, at many locations, during the past decades. However, as reported by the market watchers and significant industry players, container traffic in the country is now poised for an unprecedented growth in the immediate future. KPMG, a renowned research group, in their report Container Market in India, released in December 2015 have reported:The growth of Indian container traffic has outpaced global growth rates, thus 42

increasing India’s share in global container trade. Container traffic in the country has grown at a CAGR of 15 per cent as compared to 8 per cent globally, driving its share of global container traffic from 0.6 per cent in 1991 to 1.8 per cent in 2012. They have further highlighted that at $8.3 trillion, China’s GDP is approximately 4.5 times that of India’s (by value). In comparison, China’s container traffic is estimated at 140 million TEUs while that of India is estimated at 10 million TEUs, reflecting a 14 times rise in container volumes. With container traffic

expected to increase at a CAGR of 6-7 per cent over the next five years, several major and non-major ports aim to increase container handling capacities to cater to growing container traffic and maintain healthy utilisation levels. Since containers traffic is huge at CSFs and ICDs, use of container specific equipment integrated with software is of the essence. Most recognised suppliers are present in India to provide high tech solutions in this high end market place. Container handling equipment and logistics players of the industry concur

Container handling capacity at Indian ports has been growing.

“Developing additional capacities in ports is a futuristic move and all ports should work in that direction.” - Praveen Waychal, General Manager - Sales & Services, Cargotec India Pvt Ltd with KPMG’s projections and are actively involved in ramping up their company specific deliverables, to meet the upcoming onslaught of growth.

Steep growth trajectory

Sanjay Saxena, BU Head and Vice President of Heavy Equipment Division, Sany India, comments,“With the growing demand for container handling facilities in India, the port capacity has grown over the past decade. During the period 2002-14, the container handling capacity at Indian ports increased at a CAGR of 11 per cent, from 5.2 million TEUs in 2002 to 19.5 million TEUs in 2014. However, the capacity on the West coast of India grew faster at a CAGR of 12 per cent during this period compared to 10 per cent on the East coast. Container handling capacity at the major ports of the country grew at a CAGR of 7 per cent over the period 2002-14 to reach 12.3 million TEUs. However, during the same period, the capacity at the non-Major ports grew at very fast

rate of 35 per cent to reach 7.3 million TEUs in 2014 compared to a meager 0.2 million TEUs in 2002. Mundra has emerged as the fastest growing port followed by Pipavav, both located on the upper West coast of India. India is making a lot of efforts to increase the infrastructure at the ports and is trying to bring it at par with some of the other ports around the world.” Praveen Waychal, General Manager - Sales & Services, Cargotec India Pvt Ltd, estimates that volumes handled by ports for EXIM containers in 2014- 2015 was 7.96 million TEUs, which was 6.74 per cent up over 2013-2014 performance. CONCOR handled volumes (domestic – 4, 89,371 TEUs and international – 26,21,385 TUEs) for 2014-15.

Growth-enabling Budget allocations 2016-17

The Government has allocated Rs 800 crore for the next fiscal year for development of new ports and ongoing works on its national water ways project. Finance Minister,Arun Jaitley outlined his vision for the Indian port sector in his Union Budget speech; there were nods of approval from the industry. Jaitley said

the Government would encourage public sector ports to corporatise. Private ports have proved that ports can be an attractive investment possibility. To enable public sector ports to attract private investments and leverage their huge unutilised land resources, they will be encouraged to become companies. Experts commended the proposed corporatisation as a brilliant move to

Feature shake up the waning management and turn the government-owned ports consumer- and investor-friendly.The Finance Minister also announced a series of measures for modernising existing ports and building new ports along India’s East and West coasts. He said that initiatives are being introduced to reinvigorate infrastructure sector through Public-Private Partnership (PPP). The Government of India plans to invest Rs 70,000 crore ($10.5 billion) in 12 major ports in the next five years under the ‘Sagarmala’ initiative. The Government is also planning to set up low-cost non-major ports along the coastline under the Sagarmala project and has asked all the 12 major ports to accord priority berthing to such vessels and to encourage quicker movement of cargo. All the above plans and announcements made in this year’s Budget will positively impact the growth of ports in India. As a trickle effect the associated industries will also see a major boost in growth. Waychal opines, “The Budget would drive execution and implementation of infra projects, which in turn would boost the requirement for our equipment/ services and solutions. We also expect that more spending in infrastructure segment would also mean heavy industrial activities like steel, cement would increase and that would have a spiraling effect on other businesses for growth. He adds, “We believe the allocation of Rs 2.21 lakh crore for infrastructure sector is a very crucial move to support and boost the limping infrastructure segment. Today, the speed of delivery of cargo is affected due to congestion of roads hence allocation of Rs 97,000 crore for road sector alone is a good decision in drastic improvements in this segment. Government is planning to award new road projects of 10,000 km in FY2017. In the Budget, Rs 19,000 crore is allocated for rural road development under Pradhanmantri Gram Sadak Yojana.” In this Budget, the Finance Minister has announced a series of measures for modernising existing ports and building new ports along India’s East and West coasts. The initiatives are being introduced to reinvigorate infrastructure sector through PPP. 46

Myriad container handling equipment

Container handling is a complex operation. “A lot of cargo handling equipment is used to facilitate movement of cargo to and from the ship’s side and the transit shed, warehouse, barge, railway wagon or road vehicle,” says Ramesh Babu, Managing Director, Seashell Logistics Pvt Ltd. The deployment of both loaded and unloaded capacity equipment versions is quite extensive in India and is offered by most equipment suppliers. However, the choice lies with the end user and is dependent on the extent of container traffic handled. Similarly, many equipment categories are offered with electric or battery powered and mechanical prime movers, to suit the end user requirement or preference. Understandably, there is no brand loyalty or preference by the buyers. The equipment selection and procurement or even repeat ordering depends largely on the overall vendor capability and track record. Leading equipment suppliers in con-

tainer handling space offer a wide range of solutions to adequately meet customers’ mechanisation requirements, designed to optimise operational excellence in their areas or location specific needs. They can be broadly classified as under:

um-sized and large-scale terminals. Customers expect us to understand their business and to put a dedicated solution in front of them. It goes without saying that equipment which is capable to handle full containers is equally able to handle empty containers. Our equipment handles full containers with the exception of empty container handlers which are dedicated machines to serve empty container stacks. Here, the product name “empty container handler” says it all. RTGs or rubber-tired gantry cranes are machines which are operated in container stacks. They receive the containers from a horizontal container transport machine like terminal tractors (Import). For export it is the other way around. Straddle carriers offer two functions which are horizontal container transport and container stacking in only one ma-

chine.Which solution is/was found depends on the terminals and their container handling strategy (required stacking density, need for space, restrictions of space, operation history, etc).” Saxena highlights his company’s abilities, “Sany Group offers wide range of products to cater to this industry which include ship-to-shore crane; rubber tyre gantry/rail mounted gantry; loaded reach stacker/empty reach stacker; fork lift; empty container handler; variable reach truck; self-loading & unloading side loader; bulk cargo side loader and port tyre crane.”

for further development to meet the surge in cargo handling. We currently have a capacity to handle up to 8,50,000 TEUs of containers, 4-5 million MTs of dry bulk cargo, 2 million MTs of liquid cargo,” says Keld Pedersen, Managing Director, APM Terminals Pipavav. He adds, “Pipavav Port also has a RoRo facility which has a capacity to handle 2,50,000 vehicles annually. The port is equipped with a stock yard for cars along with a Pre Dispatch Inspection (PDI) facility. The facility is also equipped with a mobilisation yard with a capacity to accommodate significant number of cars on the Quay. Developing additional capacities in ports is a futuristic move.

“The industry needs to work hard to create ‘Made in India’ port machinery and harness the ample potential in coming years.” - Sanjay Saxena, BU Head and Vice President of Heavy Equipment Division, Sany India cube containers for ocean freight cargo. For project/break-bulk cargo, we sometime require open-top containers and in air-freight we use the airlines or our own pallets. For the retail industry, we sometime require GoH (Garments of Hangers) in airfreight, where we use as a customised cargo equipment to send the cargo directly to stores.”

Consultation a must

It must be clearly understood that container equipment is mostly imported and very expensive and requires intensive pre-sales and aftermarket support to enable the users match the equipment capacities commensurate to their cargo handling deliverables, operational excellence and most importantly lowest possible life-cycle costs of the equipment. All leading equipment suppliers offer consultancy and aftermarket services to their existing and prospective customers in a) equipment selection; b) world class aftermarket support; c) training or skill development and d) best of breed economy solutions. 50

Equipment India april 2016

Pathak informs, “To start with the pre-sales phases: It is very important to learn about the customer and its operations. Take a mobile harbour crane as an example. We would need to know about the kind of cargo the customer would like to load and unload, we would also need to know the quay infrastructure and the vessels he would like to serve not only now but also in the future. We would need to know even more but it shall be enough to illustrate the case. Based on this knowledge and together with the customer we can offer the ‘right’ solution. Likewise, aftermarket support is quite important in order to keep the customer machine or fleet running so that the customer can serve the vessels whenever the machines are needed. Reliability and availability are quite important for customers. We help to maintain both.” He adds,“The good news is that TPS with its comprehensive range of products can offer and supply either solution depending on customer and project needs. Finding the “right” solution can be supported by our consulting

services including simulation and emulation of the terminal. There are even more possibilities for container handling, such as automated ones.” Waychal confirms the thought process, “Operation and Maintenance skills and capabilities are crucial differentiating factors in the present set-up of offerings. Service support is utmost essential and is seen as an important parameter while choosing an equipment partner.” He adds, “Constant training for the maintenance and operation team is required to upgrade their competence skills in-line with changing working environment, business needs and technological advancements.” Saxena presents Sany’s standpoint and their initiatives, “O&M is a critical area in case of heavy equipment, as proper O&M leads to maximum machine availability thus leading to the maximum utilisation and profitability. In case of the port machinery, the machine breakdown leads to severe impact on profit line, impact on the trust factor with the client and ultimately the loss. As the ship waiting demurrage charges are very high as compared to the machine cost, we at Sany always believe to keep the O&M as top of our concern and interest. Sany has set up a global training center at our Pune plant which offers basic and advanced training courses on operation and maintenance of entire range of equipment offered by us. We have also associated ourselves with Industry Body ICEMA under skill development programme of Government of India to take care of skill development of O&M crew.”

Safety

According to Pathak, safety is not linked to additional capacity but is seen as a major topic also in ports and terminal investments, whether it’s in India or in any other country in the world. He states, “We offer machines and solutions also dedicated to safety and safety regulations. Safety shall be part of the selling process you are also asking for below.” Safety is the most important parameter one should look for in port operations, according to Waychal. “Unlike many overseas ports in Europe and the Americas, Indian ports cannot avoid the involvement of people movement in port

Feature

operations due to requirement of procedures. Hence, equipment should be smart to sense this element and give warning signals to people moving around the machinery. We believe proximity sensors, rear view cameras, and spreader mounted camera are very basic requirements in ensuring the safety of people and containers around in port areas,” he explains.

Green initiatives

Equipment customers often ask for environmentally-friendly products to comply with regulations put in front of them. According to Pathak,TPS is a forerunner in battery-driven equipment like automated guided vehicles (AGVs). He elaborates, “There is also a need for driver assistant features we comply with, for e.g., smart crane features to make work for drivers more easy and productive. Besides manual solutions with drivers there is a tendency to automate terminal operations with regard to, e.g., container transport and stacking. It goes without saying that TPS has already completed major projects with automated stacking cranes (ASCs) and AGVs including management software and battery exchange stations for its AGV technology.”

Challenges

The supply chain is a vital component, efficient planning of which can bring down costs to a great extent. According to Ramesh Babu, manufacturers are working towards leaner supply chains with lesser lead times in order to gain competitiveness in the market. “Transportation, warehousing and distribution are the critical components of the entire supply chain. With manufacturing activity increasing in the last few years, logistics has gained equal importance in order to provide better goods at lesser cost. The burgeoning Indian economy, strongly supported by increasing FDI, improved market reforms and regulations and growing consumption levels in the country has been the major driver of the logistics market. The government is investing in infrastructure to make the sector more competitive, efficient and cost-effective. But currently, the sector is highly fragmented with small players

“We have upgraded infrastructure to carry double-stack high cube containers.” - Keld Pedersen, Managing Director, APM Terminals Pipavav holding small units distributed across states with many challenges like: Inadequate skilled labour, inefficient material handling with outdated handling equipment, limited technology penetration and innovation, and lack of world-class standards and specifications. Fixing these problems can fuel this industry to benchmark the best practices used in developed countries,” he observes. Waychal responds, “Developing additional capacities in ports is a futuristic move and all ports should work in that direction. However, the challenges on the land side are at critical stages. The connectivity with good roads between ports and end customers would ensure the speed, safe delivery and lower costs which would be a mutually win-win situation. Even though we have good domestic consumption resulting in higher imports, we also need to develop export competitiveness for ensuring more and more goods are exported. Government’s “Make In India” initiative is a good step in this direction. Once implemented, this initiative can result in higher exports and thus utilisation of additional capacities planned by various ports.”

Vision Forward

In line with the growing trend of container traffic, major port operators and equipment players are gearing up for capacity expansion and introduction of new technologies and solutions. Says Ramesh Babu, “We would like to be the leader and trend setter in the industry. We continuously provide new solutions to our customers and exceed their expectations. We share the responsibility in our customer’s growth, which makes us a partner of choice.” Pedersen states, “We are currently

in the midst of an expansion primarily to increase the container handling capacity from 850,000 TEUs to 1.35 million TEUs a year.” Bohm observes, “Yes, our customers will certainly benefit from the expansion of new and small ports. Apart from hinterland connectivity for our customers, it will provide more space in transit, and reduce time and cost of logistics in India. Since these ports are well equipped to handle full scale ocean freight operations, waiting time for cargo loading and unloading is much lesser than the bigger ports in JNPT.” He goes further, “These initiatives will also help us reach the hinterland customers with more and convenient options making their supply chain more efficient. So in our opinion, once this part of the global supply chain becomes more efficient, the entire supply chain will benefit with better turnaround time and lower cost. To catch up with this initiative, we are planning to open a few more offices in the North region where there is a direct correlation with customers’ requirement in time and cost.” While Saxena optimistically points out, “I would like to mention that there is enormous potential in port equipment segment but still we have very less number of indigenous manufacturing in this field. The industry needs to work hard to create ‘Made in India’ port machinery and harness the ample potential in coming years.” A conducive environment backed with funds is in place for enabling the growth of container traffic in the country. Equipment suppliers and logistics companies are strategically positioned to convert their respective visions into reality. EI

he developed market saw the use of AWPs decades ago. Such machines were in demand by users, for two reasons: safety and speed of work. Indians, initially did pay any heed to safety, as such these machines were not considered essential. However, nowadays, safety is paramount in the country, to such an extent that most corporate companies present safety statistics, as a part of their Annual Balance Sheets! As such, use of AWPs is an established norm for any working personnel at heights above 6 m. All industrial segments ranging from oil & gas, power, steel, infrastructure, manufacturing, FMCG, food & beverages, hospitality, commercial buildings, shopping malls, automobile, manufacturing, general engineering, maintenance and inter modal logistic hubs for redistribution of the produce, are prolific users of this equipment. Since the equipment is ex52

pensive to acquire, the rental industry is flourishing by providing multiple options of AWPs in many user friendly configurations and engine or battery powered, eco friendly solutions.

Trends

For the past two decades use of AWPs in India had been very low. Knowledgeable contractors and organisations are now recognising the value of this equipment and their positive contribution to safety and in turn the overall productivity of the personnel working at heights. High initial acquisition cost is a constraint which still drives people to use unethical or unsafe work tools or systems like bamboo and steel scaffoldings etc. “Although AWPs’ presence has been for more than two decades, the awareness and acceptability of access equipment has increased substantially in the last few years only and this is moving upward. In

the last few years there has been a steady increase in rental segment for AWPs and the same is likely to strengthen further. As per global trends, the major contributions for AWP business come from the rental segment only,” says Rakesh Kumar, Country Manager-AWP, India,Terex India Pvt Ltd. AWPs came to India when the foreign companies started setting up projects here and thus opened up the market for AWPs. At the time of construction they wanted their own method and technologies to be followed. In construction methods anywhere across the world in developed economies, vertical access equipment formed an integral part. So they are the people who brought in the concept of access equipment in India. According to Souma Ray, Director, Haulotte India Pvt Ltd, there is now a major change in the industry as people know that these equipment are necessary

across all segments to work safely and faster. “And the change in awareness is bringing in the requirements,” says Ray.

Technologies that work

Says Kumar,“Presently the AWP market in India is at a very initial and introductory stage, but there is huge potential for access equipment ahead. Major demand is from sectors like power, industrial construction, plant maintenance, aviation, shipyard, ports, metro, commercial constructions, etc. All the major companies working in these sectors select such access products depending on their application and usage. Generally in construction activities bigger booms and rough terrain scissors are being used while for maintenance activities smaller booms and scissors are preferred.” AWPs comprise equipment such as scissor lifts, fixed and articulated booms, telescopic booms, vertical masts, etc, and all leading AWP players offer these equipment at different specifications. Haulotte offers a wide range of AWPs and telehandlers in access equipment. According to Ray, the company has the new Star range of vertical masts, articulated booms, telescopic booms, and scissor lifts. Says Kumar, “We have solutions for reaching various heights, ranging from 20 ft to 186 ft. We provide a complete range of products to our customers to meet their requirement for both indoor and outdoor applications and usages.” He adds, “Normally the selection of a particular product depends upon the various site factors and usage, but in general self-propelled scissor lifts, vertical masts and small articulating booms are most sought equipment for warehousing operations.” “Truck-mounted machines will be more in demand because of mobility,” says Giriraj Dave, Vice President (Sales), Prasad Multi Services Pvt Ltd. He adds, “We have truck-mounted double articulated machines and self propelled double articulated machines with rubber tracks.” There is an increased requirement for AWPs with infrastructure development, especially in urban infrastructure. Says Kumar, “Airports, commercial malls, etc,

Acceptability of access equipment has increased substantially only in the last few years. have always been a potential segment for access equipment. There has been increased demand for AWPs in both construction and maintenance of airports apart from demand for such equipment from various airlines. There has been steady rise in demands from commercial realty; and with the focus on Smart Cities we expect a sharp increase in demand.” He adds, “Mainly higher booms and scissors are being used at the construction stage of

such applications and vertical masts and smaller articulating booms are being preferred for maintenance.” Ray agrees, “The government has a renewed focus on urban infrastructure development: Smart Cities, airport development etc. Our AWPs are working at Mumbai’s Terminal 2. The Navi Mumbai airport project is another major opportunity for these equipment. So we see a lot of scope for AWPs in the future also.” april 2016 Equipment India

New vs used equipment

According to Kumar, there is no difference with regard to the product specification but the difference is in the age, condition and residual life of the used machines being brought here and which makes their use very critical. He says,“The uncontrolled import of second hand equipment is a point of concern mainly because of condition of the equipment and its residual safe usage life. The continuous use of second hand equipment having crossed its normal usage life is

always a potential safety concern. In the best interest of safety at workplace and industry, there must be some discouragement towards use of such equipment at work sites and some controlling mechanics should be in place to avoid such situations or else it will defeat the main aim - ‘Safe Working at Height’.” The ease with which one can import the used equipment, in any condition and

age, is a major hindrance faced by the AWP manufacturers. Ray cautions, “If some kind of restriction happens in terms of age of the machine, it will propel the growth of the industry. Now the smalltime buyers who are not serious about the safety and productivity of the machine, are benefited with the availability of cheaper used machines in the market which has brought down the rental rates drastically. This has affected the business prospects of the regular rental companies who own a fleet of new machines with better performance and life.”

Rental market

A proper legislation on working at heights will propel the growth of AWPs. 54

Equipment India april 2016

In India, the rental market is unorganised as there are very few organised rental players in the market now, in terms of volume, supporting equipment, technicians, service, etc.At the same time, the number of unorganised rental players is much more. Says Ray, “World over, the growth of access equipment is driven by rental companies. They revamp their fleet every year by replacing old machines with new ones. For a manufacturer like us, India is an end-user driven market as of now. Rental market is mainly made up by used equipment. This trend will change once the market matures and the rentals will go up.” Ray is optimistic when he says, “In the future, the rentals will play a major role because when the market matures, people will buy more machines and the rental activity will increase. With the new policies by the government, in the next three years, we will see a major change and for this major change, a proper legislation needs to be in place which will propel the growth of this industry.” According to Kumar, presently hiring and rental of access equipment is at a very initial stage. “But there is huge potential for growth of this sector in

coming years. As there are a lot of opportunities and possibilities in infrastructure development/warehousing, manufacturing in our country; the growth of hiring and rental of access equipment is bound to grow multifold,” states Kumar. He adds, “The upcoming areas such as warehousing operations, etc., are going to boost the rental segment in real terms.” Dave also sees a bright future for rental market for AWPs when he says “The growth rate will be in double-digits.”

Challenges

Even though there are signs of further development of infrastructure and manufacturing in the future, the growth rate of AWPs is not in line with this development. There are various reasons behind this situation. Says Kumar, “There has been continuous increase in awareness about safety at construction sites but we still have no policy/standard towards safe working at sites. We are hopeful that the safety regulations in this area will not only be in place at the earliest but will also be followed strictly by all stakeholders. It must be a united effort to make our workplace safer and of course,

For growth:

• Awareness has to increase multifold • Operator training and certifying • Proper legislation for safety at heights • Restriction of used machinery imports

government can take a lead in this regard.” According to Ray, legislation is very important. He says, “If we are trying to compete with the world, we must follow the global best practices. In the western countries, there is legislation which ensures that if you are working above a certain height, you need to use an access platform for the safety of the people.” Says Dave, “European and other imported branded machines meet safety requirements. Local players will have to upgrade products to meet safety standards. Government should be strict in implementation with zero tolerance on safety.” He also feels that more focus is needed on skill development programmes for operators, technicians, maintenance crew as there is an acute shortage of trained manpower in this field.

various sectors. Says Ray, “This is growing already as you would see access equipment being used in hotels, malls, airports, etc., not only during construction but also for maintenance of glass facades. Aviation is another sector the government is focusing more with plans to develop more airports which will drive the demand for more AWPs,” says Ray. Kumar also sees opportunities in the future as he says,“There is a huge growth potential for access equipment in our country. As we expect the next five years to be the most happening years with a lot of industrial and infrastructure activities lined up, the substantial growth of access equipment is also expected. In short, I am highly optimistic, that next 5-10 years are likely to be the years for access equipment,” says Kumar.

Opportunities

Need of the day

The focus of government on infrastructure development — especially projects such as Smart Cities and urban infrastructure like airports, power installation, etc — provides a great opportunity for AWPs in future. Major AWP players foresee opportunities from

The growth rate of AWPs will be in double digits.

It is a fact that a lot of infrastructure development projects are underway and in the pipeline so that the growth prospects for allied equipment segments is bright. AWP players also see a bright future ahead, considering these projected developments. However, to accelerate the pace of growth it is imperative to overcome the challenges of the level of awareness among the users, not enough importance given for safety and productivity, and uncontrolled import of used equipment.A proper legislation from the government for working at heights is the need of the hour, supported with other progressive steps of increasing awareness about the use of AWPs, operator training facilities and control over the import of used equipment. If these issues are addressed effectively, this industry will EI grow exponentially.

Indian warehousing and logistics sector is booming. JLL India reports that the warehousing and logistics sector in the country received a whopping investment of Rs 1,438 crore through two major deals in 2015. This made the overall foreign private equity (PE) inflow into the sector more than even the sum of five deals – Rs 1,350 crore – that took place in 2012. The government initiatives in making the policy environment conducive and strengthening of the e-commerce logistics platform post-2014, seems to have resulted in an investment comeback – as seen in 2015. The report says, “The promise of high growth in warehousing and logistics is luring both foreign investors but also private equity firms to India. Policies allowing 100 per cent foreign direct investment (FDI) in warehouses and food storage facilities under automatic routes (where manufacturers can sell their products online directly) as also declaring some zones to be tax-free (i.e. free trade warehousing zones or FTWZs), has made the sector appear on the foreign PE investment radar.” Driven by many global logistics and e-commerce players entering the Indian arena, in general merchandise, perishables, pharmaceuticals and environment sensitive goods, electrically operated material handling equipment market is expected to grow exponentially. As such, the market is ripe for battery manufacturers to encash from the upcoming opportunities in both OEM and aftermarkets. Many leading MHE and solutions providers are already offering such products fitted with suitable imported batteries. A golden opportunity for Indian battery makers to upgrade their product lines to provide made in India low cost but equivalent substitutes for higher voltage, high capacity and long lasting batteries used in such equipment, beginning in the aftermarket space and later graduating to OEM suppliers. On a positive note, Indian industry has already tasted success in terms of business excellence and profitably through use of low cost but highly efficient warehousing and logistics supply chains in some parts of the country. Expansions in other areas are already under implementation. Therefore, more equipment will be required, hence more demand for MHE batteries.

MHE Batteries

Increased focus on environment-friendly technologies and products in warehousing equipment propels the growth of MHE batteries.

D

riven by the advent of global logistics players also entering the Indian arena, electrically operated material handling equipment market is expected to grow exponentially, in light of their major thrusts and initiatives to develop warehousing hubs, all over the country. Most of the material handling equipment (MHE) suppliers in the country are now offering 24/36/48 V DC operated equipment of various lifting capacities, configurations and applications. As such, the market is ripe for battery manufacturers to encash from the upcoming opportunities in both OEM and aftermarket spaces. Similar opportunities also exist for allied equipment and tools industry related to battery charging and maintenance. It would be appropriate to mention that such batteries have high to very high ampere hour capacities, they are expensive and require proper maintenance for longer economic life cycle. Further, in order to increase life cycle time, battery manufacturers are investing in research to deliver light weight, high capacity, quick charge and discharge capabilities and cost-effective solutions to the industry and consumers. Another trend emerging globally is the use of new type of batteries like Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries. These find more eco-friendly compared with the tradition lead-acid and Li-ion batteries. 68

Equipment India april 2016

LFP is a new technology and in India not many battery companies are offering this yet. UltraLife India now offers this range in India. According to the company, the challenge is to counter resistance to change from the traditional lead acid technology. But given that there is increased focus on deployment of green technologies, an increase in demand to upgrade to superior energy storage solutions such as LFP, soon is expected. In line with the new trend of giving thrust on efficient and eco-friendly handling solution, many leading MHE

players have introduced electric/ battery-operated warehouse equipment. For eg, Godrej Material Handling Equipment has developed a new series of electric forklifts that deliver speed and power almost at the level of diesel forklifts. They combine the quiet, clean operations of electric technology while delivering round the clock powerful performance like diesel forklifts. KION offers electric forklifts and battery pallet trucks for various handling application indoors. On a positive note, with new investments coming to warehousing and logistics sector and the expected boom in e-commerce logistics will drive the demand for MHE batteries.

ithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries have been recently included into our product portfolio. Our LFP batteries are extremely safe as the chemistry is non-combustible. BR Ganesh, CEO, UltraLife India, a subsidiary of UltraLife Corporation USA, elaborates more on the company and its future plans. How do you perceive the market growth of high capacity batteries during FY 2016-2020? The anticipated All India power supply position as reported by CEA in its Load Generation Balancing Report 2015-16, indicates that the country is expected to experience a peak shortage of 2.6 per cent and energy shortage of 2.1 per cent, despite very high shortages likely to be experienced by Southern India. It is thus anticipated that longer hours of energy backup requiring higher capacity batteries will be the order of the day. The smart grid market in India is expected to reach $7.4 billion (Rs 50,000 crore) by 2020.The 100 smart cities will be the key driver for this and energy storage systems will play a vital role. In a report released by Markets and Markets, the growth of the smart homes

market in the coming years is expected to be high with the market size estimated to reach $58.68 billion by 2020, at an estimated CAGR of 17 per cent from 2015 to 2020. It continues to report that the key drivers of the smart home market are increased requirements of consumers for convenience, safety and security, demand for energy efficient solutions, and product development in Internet of Things (IOT) and M-2-M communication. All of this necessitates the deployment of higher capacity, safe and green batteries and an equally robust battery management system to monitor and analyse energy storage parameters. What is the range of batteries offered by you for MHE equipment? We offer deep discharge, long cycle life lithium based batteries which are high on performance and are absolutely maintenance-free. What are the new technologies being introduced in this important component sector? What will be benefits to the end users? Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries have been recently included into our product portfolio. Our LFP batteries are extremely safe as the chemistry is non-combustible. This is a key benefit given the application and usage of batteries in MHE. In addition, our LFP batteries are ‘green’ – all components used are totally bio-degradable. Further, a very low self-discharge of <2 per cent per month ensures that the batteries function even after extended period of non-usage.

Could you share some applications for which you are the market leader? How do you plan to sustain your leadership? Ultralife India has primarily been associated with the Defence and Space organisations since its inception in 2007. It is a subsidiary of Ultralife Corporation USA which also is a market leader worldwide in these sectors. Ultralife also has expertise in providing energy storage solutions for golf carts and holds the leadership position globally. In India, UI is currently focusing on promoting its range of LFP batteries as a direct replacement of lead acid batteries, across all sectors. Given its myriad benefits over the traditional lead acid batteries and even lithium ion, LFP is the latest commercialised battery technology which will enable UI to maintain its leadership in certain sectors and also help penetrate other sectors such as UPS/Inverters, renewable energy and telecom towers. LFP is a new technology and in India not many battery companies are offering this yet. The challenge is to counter resistance to change from the traditional lead acid technology. But given that there is increased focus on deployment of green technologies, we foresee an increase in demand to upgrade to superior energy storage solutions such as LFP, soon. EI

vehicle manufacturers must upgrade their machines to provide better performance and reliability; that’s where we can help. Moreover, India is exporting a significant number of vehicles and these are extensively equipped with ‘Western’ components.

Do you have any OEMs already to whom you supply in India? We are working with the majority of International OEMs who are already in India. However, we also have long standing collaborations with local Indian OEMs and this is increasing, due to our business growth here.

What is your target in the Indian market? We aim to become a key player and become a solution provider to vehicle manufacturers by deeply understanding their needs and proposing the best solution for the application. We are sure that this approach will enable us to be successful in India.

How do you look at the potential in India as compared to the global market? This is a huge and growing market. India has a bigger agricultural machinery market than China or any other country. Currently, the level of mechanisation within machinery is still very low compared with developed markets, but there is a gradual shift in India where final users are starting to really understand concepts like functionality, productivity and reliability of their machines. So, components related to machine functionality are becoming very critical, and

Do you have a plan to make India a hub? Not immediately, possibly at a later stage. What are your future plans on expansion? In India, there are some niches where technology and durability are needed and imported components from our Italian headquarters are still competitive. In the long term, there is the possibility that we will establish manufacturing facilities here, but it’s too early to have any EI kind of time scale yet. april 2016 Equipment India

itagawa Dam is a rock dam located in Kyushu, the third largest island in Japan. The island is mountainous and home to Japan’s most active volcano, Mount Aso. The new construction of Oitagawa Dam is an important infrastructure project for the island; the new dam will hold a total of 24,000,000 cu m of water. The city of Oita suffered a significant flood in 1953 making the development of the Oitagawa Dam a foundational piece to the city’s modern flood control and disaster prevention plans. Kajima, one of the country’s largest civil construction companies, was selected as the primary contractor for the massive excavation and civil engineering effort.Tomijima was appointed as the main earthworks subcontractor for project. Started in 2013, the first phase of the dam build includes breaking rock, removing rock and prepping the site area. In total, the team has moved 1.39 million cu m of earth, before the next phase which will involve building up the rock dam wall. Once constructed, the dam wall itself will be 100 m high by 500 m wide and will include 3.7 million cu m of

Customer Profile: Kajima Corporation is one of the most famous general contractors in Japan. Tomijima Construction Co Ltd is an engineering and infrastructure contractor founded in 1954 in Japan. Business Challenge: Kajima selected Tomijima as the primary subcontractor to build the Oitagawa rock dam on the southern island of Kyushu. Looking to improve excavation productivity and to keep the crew out of harm’s way, the company turned to Trimble for help through Nikon-Trimble Joint Venture (NTJV). Solution: The VisionLink® solution, Trimble GCS900 Grade Control System with specialist attachment support, Site Positioning Systems Essentials Kit and Total Stations Benefits: • 50 per cent increase in earthwork management productivity • 90 per cent less staking required than traditional methods • Reduced data prep and management from 2.5 hours per day to 30 minutes per day 80 per cent time savings for managing earth moving operations • Removed debris and cleared rock to prep the site 74

and machine control options. With support from NTJV, Tomijima equipped five excavators and five dozers with the Trimble GCS900 Grade Control System. They have also utilised four Site Positioning Systems Essentials Kits and deployed Trimble SPS620 total stations to conduct high accuracy structural works and checks. The Trimble Essentials Kits include the Trimble Site Mobile controller,Trimble SCS900 Site Controller Software and Trimble SPS985L GNSS Smart Antenna. The Tomijima team selected the mobile controllers and connected communication system so they would have the ability to send information from the field to the office – including design updates, GNSS corrections, telematics, and production information. “With the SPS Essentials Kit the team can perform site survey and positioning tasks at the dam site without relying on full-time surveyors,” said Kajima Project Manager.“Instead, field crews can collect positioning data like checking grades and elevations and calculate volumes of rock we removed compared to the material

Operators used the hydraulic excavators with 3D GCS900 machine control systems. we have brought in.” Operators used the hydraulic excavators with 3D GCS900 machine control systems to excavate for the dam according to the design.Traditionally, building a rock dam of this size would require the initial survey plus ongoing subsequent grade checking as dirt was being moved. That would involve checking and re-setting stakes close to where the excavator and rock crusher are working. Instead, with the Site Positioning Systems Essentials Kits and machine control, crews were kept out of harm’s way and there was 90 per cent less staking required compared to traditional methods. sensors calculate necessary bucket position to achieve the desired design. They also measure how much material must be moved. For about nine months, the GCS900 system was also used to guide the team’s rock breaker attachment for the excavator.Traditionally, this step is needed to prepare the dam’s foundation, breaking down the earth until the ground is solid enough to add fill for the dam material. Following the design profile on the in-cab control box, the rock breaker removed rock and overburden across the dam site by breaking rock to 2-3 cm pieces. With the GCS900 systems, the team achieved a 150 per cent increase in productivity in managing and completing earthworks, moving 1.39 million cu m of earth. “We tried different systems for the project and the Trimble GCS900 sensors were the only ones that survived the high vibrations caused by the rock breaker attachment,” said Tomijima Project Manager. “The reliability and consistency of the system is amazing.” The team used the breaker and twin-header attachments with Trimble guidance to cut excess material. This was critical to saving time and money, not only because of the extra work in over excavating but because additional material that would have to be used for backfill.

Tomijima also adopted VisionLink site productivity technology from Trimble for a holistic view of the project site and to track site productivity and materials movement. The system monitors and records 3D earthmoving operations across the project. Managers can also create real-time 3D surface models, elevation and cut and fill maps. With machine control and VisionLink, instead of taking an average of 2.5 hours to prepare and manage data, it now takes engineers on average of 30 minute each day an 80 per cent time savings in managing the earth moving process. As of September 2015, the team has finished breaking down and moving rock totaling 1.39 million cu m of material. Next, Kajima and Tomijima are bringing in fill material to build the rock dam walls. This provides even more opportunity to utilise VisionLink to track loads of material and associated productivity and efficiency in the next phase of the project. “With our success VisionLink and GCS900 are no longer specialty technology, it’s standard technology required for this type of job.” said Kajima Project Manager.“By working with the best technology and staying focused on productivity, we can accomplish high quality work and have a safety as a top priority.” EI april 2016 Equipment India

On a Lead Role

Potain cranes play leading role in prefabricated building revolution in India.

K

EF Infra is kickstarting a new era in Indian infrastructure sector, delivering prefabricated projects cost-effectively and in a shorter timeframe than traditional developments.A fleet of Potain tower cranes is helping bring the first projects to life. Prefabricated buildings is not a new concept as way back in the 1800s, prefabricated homes and buildings were shipped to locations around the world. But in India, one company is driving the industry to the next level, with a business model that delivers dramatic increases in the speed of construction and scale of developments, while also significantly reducing costs. The company behind this ambitious programme is KEF Infra, a subsidiary of KEF Holdings, a multi-industry organisation with offices and businesses across Asia and the Middle East. Faizal Kottikollon, Chairman of KEF Holdings, believes that new construction methods will play a vital role if India is to meet its ambitious targets for infrastructure development. “Infrastructure development in India

KEF Infra chose Potain tower cranes to provide the necessary lifting speed and strength. is about 50 years behind the curve,” he says. “It’s time for a completely new way of thinking about it.We need to introduce automation and fabrication processes to the sector that would be more associ-

ated with the automotive industry. Speed, skill and scale are the most important factors for infrastructure development in India.”

Lifting up expectations

To assemble its prefabricated developments, KEF Infra has turned to Potain tower cranes to provide the necessary lifting speed and strength. The company has received three Potain MC 465 cranes while a further two MD 610 cranes are scheduled to arrive. The most notable feature of the cranes selected by KEF Infra is their high capacity, which stands out in a country where lower capacity units make up the vast majority of the crane population. Bigger cranes are needed to handle the larger weights of the components in the prefabricated buildings and to accommodate the longer jibs needed to cover the large project areas. The MC 465 units have a maximum capacity of 25 t, and can lift 3 t at their maximum jib end of 80 m. The MD 610 cranes also have a maximum capacity of april 2016 Equipment India

End-user talk 25 t, and can lift 4.6 t at their maximum jib end of 80 m, although KEF Infra plans to use the cranes with 55 m of jib, a configuration that delivers an 11 t tip load. One of the MC 465 cranes was put to work on the construction of the Yenepoya University in Mangalore. This was India’s first large prefabricated building and consists of three 8-story apartment blocks for university staff. The project was designed, manufactured and assembled in just nine months, and the complex includes 96 apartments with each floor having 12 two-bedroom units. The other two MC 465 cranes were installed on a site in Calicut where they are constructing a hospital for Premium Medical Healthcare Providers. The cranes here are lifting beams that weigh between 8 t and 12 t and helping to fix some 28,000 individual elements on the 10-story development. Building work is scheduled to finish in July 2016, just 12 months after it began, and once complete the 205-bed project will be India’s first prefabricated hospital and one of its largest - with a project value of Rs 550 crore. Andre Dienst, General Manager at KEF Infra, says the Potain cranes had played a vital role in ensuring the company’s inaugural projects got off to a successful start. “We always talk about building a perfect structure and for a prefabricated development you need to rely on the cranes to help deliver that perfection,” he said. “They do about 90 per cent of the work so it’s important to have cranes from a brand you can trust on in terms of quality and service. Manitowoc Cranes is known worldwide for its reliability, so if you choose a Potain crane you haven’t got to worry. As a company, we always choose quality over cost.” Dienst’s colleague, Safarulla Abdul Azeez, lead techno commercial manager at KEF Infra, agrees and says that the Potain cranes have also helped with one of the most important aspects of any project – meeting the deadline. “The biggest challenge on any project is always completing it on time,” he said. “A crucial factor in this is making sure there are no issues with the equipment. It’s also good for your workers to know you are using the best equipment – it 80

KEF Infra selected higher capacity cranes from Manitowoc. gives them more confidence and they feel happier. If you choose Potain cranes then you know there will be no issues with the quality or service.”

Optimising efficiency

To support KEF Infra’s vision for a radically-changed construction industry based around prefabricated buildings, the company has opened a $100 million factory in Bangalore. Here the prefabricated ‘blocks’ (such as kitchens, bedrooms, offices or bathrooms) that make up the developments are built. The factory, which is thought to be the first of its kind in the world, uses robotics, automation and the latest lean manufacturing processes to build the blocks. There’s also an inhouse architect and engineering consultancy that use the latest design and BIM techniques to create the developments and analyse how they will perform over their lifecycle. As well as driving change in the design and construction of buildings in India, Faizal Kottikollon also believes the crane industry should advance to optimise to this new way of building. With this in mind, he would like to see more efficiency and flexibility in the cranes of tomorrow. “In the future we’d like to see greater automation in the cranes that are working on our projects. Machines that are faster to assemble and that can contribute to growing levels of safety on job sites,” he said.

The vision of KEF Infra has already brought the company to the attention of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who met with Faizal Kottikollon in August 2015. With the deliverables achievable through prefabricated construction it’s easy to see why it’s attracting such strong interest. The PM has called for the construction of 50 million new homes for India’s poor to be built by 2022.To meet this challenge KEF Infra says it could deliver a 1.5 million sq ft residential development inside a 12 month timeframe, and has developed a prototype of low cost homes that could be priced as low as $8,000. Both Faizal Kottikollon and his wife Shabana Faizal, who is also the company’s vice chairperson, are closely involved with many charities and this has strongly influenced the company’s business model. Healthcare, education and housing have been deliberately chosen as areas of focus because they are issues both care deeply about. “Because the speed, quality and affordability of hospital construction will increase, the overall cost of healthcare will come down,” explains Faizal Kottikollon. In its early days for this new business, KEF Infra is off to a strong start. It has an order backlog of $300 million and in future plans to open prefabricated component factories in Mumbai and Delhi, while further afield it is hoping to bring its business model to the UAE EI and Germany.

equipment is a skill that needs to be specially trained and Schwing Stetter India is doing a phenomenal job in training several youngsters in this field.” Students who sign up for the course will receive a monthly stipend of Rs 10,000 and guaranteed placement in leading manufacturing companies. Schwing Stetter India is providing their “Operator Training School” to IESC to enable students to get a real-feel of the concrete equipment. Adding to this, Anand Sundaresan, President of ICEMA and Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of Schwing Stetter India said, “India is running a deficit of skilled operators and mechanics for operating construction equipment. IESC has taken initiative of skilling unemployed youth to provide skilled operators and mechanics to the construction industry. VG Sakthikumar, Managing Director, Schwing Stetter Sales & Services Pvt Ltd and Chairman of Mechanization Committee, Builders Association of India, said “We are proud of the fact that Schwing Stetter India is the first Centre of Excellence of IESC for skilling concrete equipment operators. This is a great recognition for our commitment to training and skilling that we have been pursuing since the beginning of our company in India. CA1400 Soil Roller

A

tlas Copco’s Tier IV Final compact CA1400 soil roller offers two speeds and amplitudes for added versatility on a variety of applications, including pipe trenches, roads, streets, steep slopes and parking lots. The roller’s cross-mounted engine allows technicians to easily access all necessary components, minimising downtime. Its ease of service, high versatility, and optimal gradeability contribute to a fast return on investment for rental centres, according to the manufacturer. The CA1400’s 66-inch-wide (167 cm) drum and two amplitudes — 0.032 and 0.067 inch (0.08 and 017 cm) — allow rental centres to offer contractors one unit for compacting a wide range of materials. Using the adjustable settings, operators can change the amplitude to

suit different lift thicknesses. In addition to two amplitudes, operators can set the speed on the CA1400 to high or low to achieve different compaction results on a variety of applications and materials. Due to compact size, the CA1400 works well for compacting materials on large building foundations and industrial construction sites. The CA1400 offers operators optimum gradeability to easily manoeuver up and down steep slopes. To ensure consistent speed, the CA1400 features flotation tires and a differential lock and a drum drive system for high traction in forward

New Walk Behind Roller

C

hicago Pneumatic has extended its range of walk-behind double drum rollers with the introduction of the MR7005. Easy to maintain and operate, the new roller includes automatic hydraulic brakes for enhanced operator safety and a built-in hydraulic oil cooler to control the unit’s temperature and increase durability. “We have designed our new double drum walk-behind roller to address customers’ demands for more safe, robust and reliable construction equipment that can operate seamlessly in tough and hot working environments,” commented Andrzej Mroziński, spokesperson for light compaction equipment at Chicago Pneumatic. “The MR7005 is powerful yet simple to handle, with its built-in hydraulic oil cooler reducing wear on vital components.” To ensure operators are protected, the MR7005 features automatic hydraulic brakes that respond when the

or reverse. These components also allow for easy movement on the job site and increased productivity. A cross-mounted 75-hp Kubota diesel engine sits perpendicular to the CA1400’s frame. This allows technicians to reach all necessary engine components and hydraulic systems for easy servicing, which reduces turnaround time for rental centres and minimises downtime for contractors.

pressure drops. On the other hand, if the pressure goes up, the brakes are automatically released. The roller also comes equipped with a vibration reducing handle so that operators are not exposed to high hand/arm (H/A) vibration levels. To provide operators with easy access to service points and the battery for charging, the new double drum roller includes a flip-up hood. It also comes equipped with scrapers to prevent material from sticking to the drums, reducing the amount of maintenance required. The user-friendly design of the MR7005 provides operators with easy access to throttle and water controls, as well the electrical starting box. The new walk-behind double drum roller is suitable for compacting thin layers on granular soils and asphalt. Grove GMK4100L-1 Taxi Crane

M

anitowoc has introduced a new Grove all-terrain crane for the global market. The crane offers unique innovations and class-leading capabilities in the taxi (road travelling) category. The four-axle Grove GMK4100L-1 boasts the best load charts in its class and its compact design makes it easy to access and manoeuver on the narrowest of job sites. The new 100 t capacity crane replaces the GMK4100L and is part of a new generation of Grove taxi cranes. Grove was the first manufacturer to produce a 100 t capacity crane on four axles when it introduced the GMK4100L. Now, the new GMK4100L-1 has raised the bar even higher with some notable improvements. The GMK4100L-1 not only offers the best load charts in this class in its maximum counterweight configuration, but also in its most common taxi configuration with a weight of less than 12 t per axle (a common axle load limit in many countries). Compared

Grove GMK4100L-1 all-terrain crane

with the GMK4100L, the new GMK4100L-1 delivers 6.9 per cent better load charts overall when in its 26.2 t maximum counterweight configuration. In the taxi configuration with a 6.7t counterweight, the GMK4100L-1 boasts an increase of 9.3 per cent improved performance. Even when operated with the maximum roadable 19.9 t counterweight for up to

16.5 t per axle, the crane sets a new benchmark in its class. The GMK4100L-1 is more compact than its predecessor, so easier to access narrow job sites. With 14-inch tyres, the crane boasts a 2.55 m width versus the 2.75 m of the GMK4100L. Overall, it is also 0.5 m shorter, making it more manoeuverable on congested job sites.
