THIS IS MY STORY

Elva Patricia-Ann Rolle, nee Russell, was born at home through Fritz Lane in Nassau, Bahamas on the 25th of October, 1946 to the late Otis Russell, a carpenter and taxi driver and the late Inez Russell, a homemaker, both from Grand Bahama. The family moved to Toote Shop Corner, a loving homestead where fond memories and core principles laid the foundation upon which Elva’s character was built. The second child of eight children, Elva was raised in an environment where good manners, self-respect and a resolute love of family was abundantly evident to all who visited. Affectionately called ‘Lady Ann’, ‘Ms Ann’ or ‘Popeye’ by various family members and neighbors, Elva’s charismatic personality and outgoing nature had taken root from an early age.

She attended Southern Prep Primary School and Xavier’s College where she participated in the school’s choir, athletics and developed a love for English Literature. Following high school, Elva completed studies at the Nassau Technical Institute and earned her first job at the Bank of Nova Scotia in 1966. Elva then matriculated abroad to The Levitan School of Business in Philadelphia where she briefly studied Secretarial Science. In search of a career path that could match her personality, she then switched gears and attended Graham Junior College in Boston Massachusetts, where in addition to studying Television Production, Elva earned an Associate’s Degree in Mass Communication. The University of Miami is where she would complete her tertiary education with a Bachelors Degree in English Language and Literature.

Elva began her career at ZNS as an Apprentice

in the summer of 1969 and secured a permanent position the following year. She demonstrated a tremendous work ethic by producing programs such as “Housewives Choice”, “Emphasis on Modern Living” and “Team Challenge” in addition to her regular radio shift. She was also a part of the Evening News team where she read the international news and the weather report. Elva interviewed female groups in Nassau and the Family Islands across the archipelago which proved critical to the drafting of the “Green Papers” needed as the Bahamas prepared to become an independent nation. In 1976, in preparation for Television Broadcasting in the Bahamas, she was a member of a group of 12 Bahamians, who underwent three months of intensive training in Canada. The course was specifically designed for Bahamian television personnel by Ryerson Polytechnical Institute and the Canadian Broadcasting Company. In true trailblazing form, Elva was the original Producer and Director of its “Its Academic” and a provocative show called “Woman”. She also directed “Focus” and “In Touch” in addition

to many other pioneering Bahamian Television programs. Throughout her broadcasting career, in addition to interviewing numerous local and international luminaries, Elva’s voice on the radio and likeness on television was familiar to most Bahamians in the 1970s. Elva married electrical engineer Anthony “Boozie” Rolle, former: Senator; Member of Parliament; Cabinet Minister; and Bahamas Ambassador to the United Nations, on a bright and sunny day on October 14, 1972. Together they had three children, Tracee, Gemma and Andrew and Elva participated in every meaningful part

of their childhood without exception. Elva loved her children and glowingly talked about them often. To Elva, the most rewarding part of being a parent was to see her children succeed and to be able to take care of themselves. She also loved her Russell family from Grand Bahama and imbued the importance of knowing your family to her children.

In the 1980’s, following a two year period as a homemaker, Elva embarked on a very successful career as an insurance executive. Once again, her charm and magnetism enabled her to smoothly transition into a new career that lasted for more than three decades with several companies including Dominion Life, Manulife and Global Life. Elva was very instrumental in Global Life sponsoring the Striders, one of the largest local track and field clubs in the country in the late 1990s. Before, retirement, she was the director and co-founder of Bahamas Insurance Brokers and Agents Limited.

A Baptist, she was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. Passionate about gardening, she was also a member of the Horticulture Society, the Orchid Society, and the Carver Garden Club. Elva was an active member of the Free National Movement and was recently appointed a Meritorious Council Member. She

also served as a Director on the Board of Directors of ZNS and Bahamasair.

Elva Patricia-Ann Rolle made her heavenly transition in the late evening of April 8th, 2022 to be with her maker and reunite with her predeceased family and friends. She was a caring wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, sister, godmother and friend. Although, she has moved on to glory, her love of life and legacy shall thrive in the memories of her earthly loved ones.

“My official nickname, is Lady Anne. Which was given to me by some neighbours who, they were originally from Cat Island. They nicknamed me Lady Ann because wherever I went, I always had my little hat and my purse, and my gloves. So it was there I learned, if you wore gloves, you must be wearing a hat. So that was my official name, Lady Ann.”

CONGREGATIONAL HYMN

“Great Is Thy Faithfulness”

Great is Thy faithfulness,” O God my Father, There is no shadow of turning with Thee; Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.

(Chorus)

Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see; All I have needed Thy hand hath provided— Great is Thy faithfulness! Lord, unto me!

What a friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry

Everything to God in prayer!

O what peace we often forfeit,

O what needless pain we bear, All because we do not carry

Everything to God in prayer.

Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest, Sun, moon and stars in their courses above, Join with all nature in manifold witness To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth, Thy own dear presence to cheer and to guide; Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

PRAYER OF INVOCATION

Reverend Alfred Stewart

SONG OF INVOCATION

“What A Friend We Have in Jesus”

Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged; Take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful Who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness; Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Are we weak and heavy laden, Cumbered with a load of care?

Precious Savior, still our refuge; Take it to the Lord in prayer. Do thy friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer! In his arms he’ll take and shield thee; Thou wilt find a solace there.

ORDER OF SERVICE

CONGREGATIONAL HYMN

“Glad Reunion Day“

There will be a happy meeting in heaven I know When we see the many loved ones we’ve known here below. Gather on the blessed hilltops with hearts all aglow. That will be a glad reunion day.

(Chorus)

Glad day, a wonderful day, Glad day, a glorious day; There with all the holy angels and loved ones to stay, That will be a glad reunion day.

There within the holy city we’ll sing and rejoice, Praising Christ the blessed Saviour with heart and with voice. Tell him how we came to love Him and make Him our choice. That will be a glad reunion day.

When we live a million years in that wonderful place Basking in the love of Jesus, beholding His face. It will seem but just a moment of praising His grace. That will be glad reunion day.

RECESSIONAL HYMN

“It’s Alright Now”

There was a time I travelled a lonely sinful road; Beneath a heavy burden bending low; But now all things are different, since Jesus took my load

It’s alright now, I’m His I know.

(Chorus)

It’s alright now, for I am in my Saviour’s care

It’s alright now; my Saviour hears and answers prayer He’ll walk with me, (He’ll walk beside me)

Till I climb the heavenly stair, And everything (And everything is alright now)

A’ down a lonely pathway, without a friend to guide, I walked in sin and sorrow all alone ‘Till Jesus came and found me, and drew me to His side; It’s alright now, for I’m His own.

No more in sin I wander, no more in darkness roam The Lord has placed my feet on higher ground; Each day new heights I’m gaining, my soul is nearing home, It’s alright now, I’m heaven bound.

GRAVESIDE HYMNS

IT IS WELL

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll; whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul.

(Chorus)

It is well, it is well, With my soul, with my soul, It is well; it is well, with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come, let this blest assurance control that Christ has regarded my helpless estate, And hath shed His own blood for my soul.

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought! My sin, not in part but the whole, is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more, praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

And, Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight, the clouds be rolled back as a scroll; the trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend Even so, it is well with my soul

“TILL WE MEET AGAIN”

May His peace be with you till we meet again

May His peace be with you till we meet again Till we reach that distant shore

And we’ll shed a tear no more May He give you strength to endure Till we meet again

May His love be with you till we meet again

May His love be with you till we meet again Till we reach that promised land

And we’ll walk hand in hand

May He give you strength to stand Till we meet again

I’LL FLY AWAY

Some glad morning when this life is o’er, I’ll fly away;

To a home on God’s celestial shore, I’ll fly away (I’ll fly away).

(Chorus)

I’ll fly away, Oh Glory

I’ll fly away; (in the morning)

When I die, Hallelujah, by and by, I’ll fly away (I’ll fly away).

When the shadows of this life have gone, I’ll fly away; Like a bird from prison bars has flown, I’ll fly away (I’ll fly away)

Just a few more weary days and then, I’ll fly away; To a land where joy shall never end, I’ll fly away (I’ll fly away)

WHEN WE ALL GET TO HEAVEN

Sing the wondrous love of Jesus, Sing His mercy and His grace. In the mansions bright and blessèd He’ll prepare for us a place.

(Chorus)

When we all get to Heaven, What a day of rejoicing that will be! When we all see Jesus, We’ll sing and shout the victory!

While we walk the pilgrim pathway, Clouds will overspread the sky; But when travelling days are over, Not a shadow, not a sigh.

Let us then be true and faithful, Trusting, serving every day; Just one glimpse of Him in glory Will the toils of life repay.

Onward to the prize before us! Soon His beauty we’ll behold; Soon the pearly gates will open; We shall tread the streets of gold.

God’s GARDEN

God looked around his garden And found an empty place, He then looked down upon the earth And saw your tired face. He put his arms around you And lifted you to rest.

God’s garden must be beautiful He always takes the best.

He knew that you were suffering He knew you were in pain. He knew that you would never Get well on earth again. He saw the road was getting rough And the hills were hard to climb.

So he closed your weary eyelids

And whispered, ‘Peace be Thine’. It broke our hearts to lose you

But you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you

The day God called you home

Her LEGACY

“I love my children dearly. I love them adequately.”

WELL ROLLE,

This year we would have celebrated 50 years of marriage. Though a lifetime for many, it just seems like there was not enough time. You are the epitome of the perfect mate. You took care of everything. I have never seen anyone love their children as much as you did and you made sure that everyone knew that. I didn’t have to worry about anything at all. You were my strength. I will miss you.

I love you.

“…When we got married, I really didn’t know how to cook. But here’s the story. Every time I cooked something, he would commend me and say that was nice. And it just encouraged me to keep on cooking. And I must say about him, he’s one of the best providers that I know of for his family.”

Mom,

I feel exceptionally blessed and proud to have you as a mom. You always made us feel loved, valued and appreciated. You always supported us more than anyone else. I hope to always make you proud. Who named me? Who held my hand when I am afraid? Who inspired, encouraged and motivated me more than you?

You were an exceptional help with Isaiah from birth. I don’t know what I would do without your unrivaled support. I thank God for a phenomenal mother like you.

Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God. Philippians 1:3 NLT

I will miss praying with you, singing to you, writing for you and massaging your feet. I already miss your 3 calls a day: morning, noon and night. What is a tea party without you?

You are so Eternally Loved Valued and Appreciated and words cannot articulate how much I will miss you.

I Will Always Love You Mom.

Andrew

Mum was a central part of my life in every imaginable way. She never missed a track meet, basketball game, graduation or birthday. Throughout every heartbreak, rejection, failure, business idea or success, she provided a consistent source of support, encouragement and enthusiasm. Values such as honesty, integrity and decency are permanently etched in my character because of her example and constant counsel. I am so deeply proud to be her one son. I am grateful that she was able to meet my dear wife and kids and more importantly they were able to witness and learn to love the woman who lovingly molded me into the man I am today. Mum was a caring, kind and genuine soul and the impact she has made on our family shall last forever. Her consciousness and energy shall live through Tracee, Gemma and I.

Love you Mum

Andrew

Andrew

Imet Mrs. Elva Russell Rolle in 2007 late one evening on the way to dinner with her one and only son who she affectionately called her ‘Prince’ (Andrew Rolle). Andrew had picked me up and told me he wanted me to meet his mum. I was excited and nervous all at once. She embraced me and welcomed me into the family that very night. Over the years, we grew close and had a kindred relationship. We shared many memories that I will never forget. Attending tea parties, garden parties, birthday parties and vacations will never be the same. I enjoyed her company as I learnt so many things about life and family. It was in 2013, when Andrew and I got married and she told me to call her ‘mum’.

Mum and I would do so many things together, she was one of my biggest supporters. We shared countless hours of laughter,

dancing and chatting. She sparked my interest in gardening and the outdoors. I remember her telling me that her plants were her ‘therapy’. I know that I will never have a green thumb like her or be able to make her delicious green bean casserole at Christmas. I do know that I will forever keep her words, instructions and love in my heart.

Mum enjoyed celebrating life and in an exquisite style. In this picture, we were celebrating my 35th Birthday. I can remember her joking with me and telling me I’m getting up there in age. She would further joke about how she was almost twice my age. This picture is my absolute favorite picture of us because it captures a moment of fondness and endearment. It also captures a small fragment of the past, present and future generations. I am blessed by her works, her family dynamics and her faith.

Mum was a woman of profound legacy, a woman of impact, a woman of a lifetime.

I love you and may your soul rest in eternal peace. Love Quela

How do you wrap up my years walking on this earth with my big sister Elva and fit it in the dash between the years of my birth and her death 1964 “-” 2022.

Wow this is profound, “46” and “64”, never realized until now.

Our family, a very large tight knitted group which has always been together celebrated, birthdays, holidays, milestones, events and gatherings.

Elva, on most of these occasions, had her hands in the planning of them. This entailed the most meticulous details; what is the menu going to be, when do we go shopping for the necessary items for the event, who needed to go for what, take her for this......

Whenever we had an event to attend and Elva was the driver, she would say be ready an hour before the event because she would be passing by half an hour before that time to pick you up. So she wanted you ready at least an hour and a half before the event. The translation to this is, be ready ten minutes ahead of what time she gave you and be outside waiting for her to pull up. Lord help if you were running late for Elva. Mummy would say, “Dr. Rassin is outside blowing the car horn”. My sister Elva was a stickler for being on time.

If ever you were a passenger and Elva the driver, oh what an experience..........

Elva possessed that strong sense of family, she always had an insatiable thirst to obtain the knowledge of the family history, she could not wait to share it with the family or with whoever would listen.

This past October, Elva planned a day trip to surprise aunt Doris just as a precursor to her 100th birthday celebration. Me, Ethelyn and Elva had an amazing visit not realizing this would be our last trip together. Here goes Aunt Doris, saying “Ethelyn and Elva, Nassau’s best”.

Elva, a results driven individual, always encouraged me as a young girl in athletics. She liked to brag about all of my God given talents and constantly encouraged me to pursue what God has instore for me. She’d brag about my DeShannon and my Destanee’s ease of navigating through her online shopping sites she frequented. Now should Elva ask you to purchase something for her on the other hand, you definitely had to pick her up or video call for her to place her personal preference on each item. She had a male family friend who lives in Florida, video call her and go through all of her favorite isles of her favorite stores, to ensure she got exactly what she wanted, the best!

My big sisters were always my protectors, our parents did not have to make the normal unpleasant meeting with teachers, attend PTA meetings and the like for me. Even as an adult Ethelyn, Elva and Angie protected me and continue to protect me. The best protectors!!

Elva insisted on cooking her, or my favorite dishes and would order me to sit with her to enjoy the meal. This was our private time to share our thoughts on things. On my last promotion, Elva called me and told me she was taking me shopping because I needed a few new suits and blouses to make sure I presented and represented well. No matter what I said about me having just a few things and not needing new stuff she insisted. I looked at Ets for help, but of course she was in agreement with EPA. Only the best! She liked it when I passed by after work just so she could critique what I wore to work. If my attire, shoes and hair were not up to her standard, which was often in her book. My big sisters Ethelyn, Elva and Angie had Patrenda as the subject matter, always. They all wanted to know how they dropped the ball on Patrenda. The best sisters!

Me and my three sisters had a favorite song preformed by Sister Sledge ``We Are Family, I got all my Sisters and me”..... This was the song we danced together, only us....The best times!!

Girl Elva, you have left some very large shoes to fill, planted the seeds, cooked all the meals, made the final ceramic piece, painted the last picture, made the final floral arrangement, penned the last contract, made the final sale, organized the final tea party, attended the last meeting, danced to the last song, attended your last church service and have made that final flight. You have done it all!!!!

You are the very best!!! Love, Patrenda

OUR ELVA PATRICIA ANN,

There are not enough words to describe Lady Ann. She was more than a human being passing through this world, she was a HERStory movement. A woman who understood where she came from and from whom she came. A woman with a clear vision of where she was going and who walked beside her. She was a woman who believed, who undoubtedly achieved. She was a Royal woman indeed.

To know her was to experience her, to experience her was to love her.

Our Elva was an experience. Whoever came into contact with her would never forget her. You experienced her love, you experienced her humour, you experienced her disappointment, you experienced her loyalty, you

experienced her intelligence. You experienced HERstory.

She set the standard and taught us how to reach.

She was very critical, but also took time to teach.

She taught us the value of family traditions and memories.

But what was most important to her was

creating and leaving behind a Legacy.

Elva Patrica Ann Russell Rolle, our hearts are breaking.

Your legacy will be passed on from one generation to the next.

Forever Carved In Our Hearts, The O’tis Clan

Forever In My Heart, Francine

My very first memory of Aunt Elva was when she visited Grand Bahama and I was approximately four years old. I was so excited for that trip because she told me she had two suitcases filled with gifts. Of course, I thought she was bringing two suitcases filled with toys, but instead she brought two large suitcases filled with books. As a child I was probably disappointed, but now I see how she was making sure to give us the same training she did with Tracee, Gemma and Andrew. I find myself doing the same thing. If you know me, you know any gift from me is going to be a book.

Aunt Elva was the family Historian, she ensured that we all knew our Heritage, especially our African Heritage. If it is one thing she made sure of was that we all knew the name Ann Tobias, who was our ancestor from the motherland. She stressed the importance of knowing these things, because it empowers and grounds you. Our love of history forged an even closer relationship between us.

My Aunty became my role model as I embarked on my journey in the history field. I chose my own path but she immediately became a mentor. Now, as her niece/mentee came other obligations. That means being her messenger

for when she wanted to give my daddy a piece of her mind (they had a special unbreakable bond), or to be able to run an errand within the timeframe she needs it done. I am pretty sure I broke a few records on Elva’s Errand team. Her slogan for the team was “well who is more important than me?”

Quality time with family meant everything to her. Christmas 2021 she was making her last family memory. She toiled in the kitchen and cooked the christmas dinner, she delegated, she fully decorated the house (1 large christmas tree and about 6 mini christmas trees), she gave her speech, we played our games and we took our photos. There was one particular moment when I knew her heart was filled. She said to her siblings “Y’all come, let’s take this photo, this just may be the last photo we take of all of us alive” and they obliged. I snapped away, with her making sure I got her best angles. In that moment her heart was filled indeed.

I know you are in heaven asking Ann Tobias all the questions you wish you wanted ask.

Love, Francine Garrette aka Miss Thursday

To know her is to love her. Words can’t describe the feeling. No one was like Aunt Elva. I’m lucky enough to have been able to spend my younger years living with her. She was truly my go to forever thing I needed.

A life well lived and she also made sure everyone knew our history. Long live “Ann Tobias”. The history you’ve passed on to all of us - I’m grateful for it. Forever etched in my heart are the memories we shared. I will especially miss you being the first person to call me as soon as I land in Nassau (not haven’t yet disembarked the plane). I am slowly accepting the expectation of visiting you when I land or to get the “Ine see you yet” call. Part of me went with you when God called you home. Your legacy will live on forever in our hearts and those of her who knew her best.

I am in a place of comfort. The fear now is gone. Put those things in your thoughts, In your memory I live on.

ALioness Is Most Gentle Around Those

She Loves, She provides and protects especially her cubs.

At the sound of twig broken she would jump to attention, No foe dare approach, as they sense her apprehension.

Now the lioness fades off and allow the young cubs to thrive, Leaving her cubs to carryon her work, for the rest of their lives.

My Aunt Elva was the lover of all things natural. She attended her garden and

allowed its beauty to flourish. I spent many days watching her put so much effort in ensuring her creations would flourish. There was no lack in her dedication with nature and with family. She would defend her husband, country, political party and family just as a lioness protecting her cubs.

Elva is example for all to never give up, to stay true to your beliefs and most importantly, remember family first.

You Will Be Missed, Rest In Peace!

TRIBUTE TO MY GODDIE: ELVA

The rest of The Bahamas knew her as a woman with amazing talent for the public arena – well- spoken, accomplished, a pioneer for women in broadcasting, born to be in the spotlight. I knew her as “Goddie Elva.” In my formative years, she (and her family, by extension) would be the hallmark of family values like support, counsel and camaraderie for me. She was a friend, par excellence, to my mother and so much more to me. She was Goddie!

I have two godmothers – both of whom hold a special place in my heart. Of course, there is Goddie Minna – beautiful, bright smile, always welcoming. Then...there was Elva.

I’m not sure how our relationship developed over the years, but she was always a constant voice in my head – reminding me how talented and beautiful I was, even when the world around me didn’t treat me that way. She would often have a few choice words for anyone who acted unfairly,

inconsistently, or unjustly toward me. I loved this woman who was always on my side! Goddie Elva taught me so many important things about life and family and friendship.

It was through her friendship with my mom that I learned the important lesson: Women don’t have to compete with each other; they can simply celebrate each other’s strengths and support each other in weakness. Did they have the perfect relationship? I dare not say yes. But to me, it was. They both were stern and opinionated, but fierce in their loyalty to each other. Their lives were oceans apart. Goddie Elva lived in the spotlight, dinners and parties and meetings and the works! But this never at one time diminished her welcome when we stopped by for a visit.

Goddie taught me the values of presenting myself well and preparing for those opportunities in the way I carried myself. People describe me as poised, confident, articulate – much of this came from her. I remember sleeping over at her house and listening to the way she spoke – on the phone, at the kiln in the garage, sorting through Amway shipments, wherever. Then, I would sneak off to some quiet corner and practice speaking in that same

tone, rehearsing my words, so I could sound just like Goddie Elva.

There was never a time that I knew her where she didn’t seem extremely busy. It was always some business or other that kept her buzzing, going, striving. I learned this from her – never settle for less than you are worthy of. She could have settled for broadcasting, or growing someone else’s company, but she didn’t. She explored so many means of building herself, teaching me along the way that it is not how you begin but how you live to ensure a great end that really matters.

Have I made it seem that we didn’t have our differences? Let me assure you, that is not the case. If there was anyone who ever held an opinion, it was Goddie Elva! I remember one time in particular, she had asked me a favor. I was to sing at a birthday celebration. I admitted that I couldn’t, at the time, as I was in studio recording my album. She looked me in my face quietly, with this look on her face that shouted her disappointment and displeasure. What happened after? Goddie got exactly what she wanted! I recorded my last song in the session and sped to the hall just in time to sing “To Dream the Impossible Dream” for my Goddie.

Oh, by the way, that was another great talent of hers – getting exactly what she wanted. I can only smile at the many times she got me to sing. “For me,” she would say. “Ayanna, do it for me.”

Sadly, a chapter of my life closes in her passing. Goddie Elva was perhaps the purest resource in a Godmother –passionate, formidable in her loyalties and indomitable in her spirit. She was the first person, outside of my mother, to call me black and beautiful – like my grandmother, she would always remind me: A Queen!

Following her example, I can only hope to be. God Bless You This Week!

Life is partly what we make it, and partly made by the friends we choose.

Thank you Elva for choosing me as your friend. What a Phenomenal Lady, A Classy Lady, A Godly Lady, A Lady who loved and still loves her family especially her six grand kids.

I knew Elva all my life. We had a Toote Shop Corner connection, an Insurance connection; (you see we worked together). A political connection we were both FNM’s.

Ihave often wondered what a “reunion in heaven” looks like.

If there were ever a time I contemplated an afterlife welcome, it’s been these last few days.

What a catchup that must have been between Elva and Annie.

Knowing my mother the late Andrea Sawyer (nee Knowles), she would ask Elva about the grandchildren to her THREE God children Tracey Gemma and Andrew.

Those who know the story would in no way be surprised. Elva’s children hold a special place with Goddie Annie.

Birthdays, Christmas and milestones would find Goddie bearing gifts and lots of cheer.

There were times I felt as if these three were my own siblings. We travelled as a pack.

As the eldest of the crew it was my job to entertain these children as Annie and Elva made those almost rock star appearances.

The more I thought about that reunion I imagined Elva would tell Annie how she kept a watchful eye on Hope and “Romie” since she’s been gone.

There would be ruckus laughter

She was like my big sister. She looked out for me, no one had better fool with me in Elva’s presence or she would give you a piece of her mind and she did that well.

Elva loved gardening but I did not. She told me her plants did not back talk her they did what she said, unlike me. Elva was a very special friend. She told me when I was right and when I was wrong. She celebrated my achievements in life and she stood with me when life was not so kind.

Because she was some years my senior I shared my heart with her and she never disappointed me.

Elva loved life and enjoyed every moment of it. Elva I will miss our late night phone call and our many jokes.

Sleep on my beautiful friend. Take your well-deserved rest.

at how Elva called us frequently to remind us “how THE BATCH” was still in charge from all the way up here.

In that moment Elva’s brother Bruce Russell would shout across that room in heaven how he gave Annie that nickname THE BATCH.

The name is a play on Mum’s one time declaration that she was THE OFFICIAL BACHELORETTE.

Elva’s younger sister Angie would be the next heavenly appearance asking Elva “how was Pilate?”

That’s the nickname she bestowed on our father Ozzie. While Elva and Annie were friends, not even my father could escape these whimsical and witty tales of adventure.

The reunion would then turn to politics and current affairs.

I suspect The Lord would remind them that those types of conversations had no place in heaven.

Mum would reply “Elva, look at my eyes”

The heavenly laugher would grow louder.

Inez Russell would smile in amusement, recalling it was just like the old days in Toote Shop Corner.

I imagined a reunion where

Elva and Annie reminisce on a lifetime of friendship. So much time has passed since these two spoke. So much to catch up on, so many good times to relive, so many friends and family in heaven to greet.

My thoughts allowed me to imagine a grand welcome, a celebration planned by Annie of course, to get reacquainted with so many, Jen, Norma, Vikki, Zelma and on and on. While we mourn down here, I imagined a jubilation in heaven.

IF I COULD MAKE ONE WISH RIGHT NOW…

and it came true, it would be to hear Elva say, “Meo, give me a call right back, not tomorrow, but immediately back!” I suppose this is how life works, but I know it isn’t God’s purpose to separate her from me and cause her great suffering. However, I hope she did not experience this sorrow or cry as much as I did for her.

There are a million things I miss about Elva, including every nuance of her personality, her deep love and admiration for her family and friends, and her voracious appetite for life and the knowledge that comes with it.

I miss her mind, and the way she would put a spin on anything and anyone. Love like hers is rare these days. I guess this earth can’t handle things so pure and true...

One of my most memorable moments is how she taught me how to cook grits. She said, “make sure you use a whisk to stir, and your grits will be perfect.” Well, it was, and I told her it came out perfectly. She said, “Call your cousin Eth and let her know because she refuses to use a whisk”.

I can clearly hear her voice, the last time we spoke, she was in the hospital, and I asked, “Did Gemma spend the night with you?”. And my heart was warm when she said, “Is the Pope Catholic?”, a phrase she so often says to drive a point home. But, I can’t help constantly asking myself, “Why did she have to die?”. Why can’t all her dreams come true?. No one deserves them more than she does.

From an early age, adorned with gloves and a purse her loving Aunt Doris affectionately called “Lady Ann”. I must say how fortunate I am to be given the gift of her, not because we are blood relatives, but because of who she is; the morning greetings, the midday trivia, and best of all, the night laughter before we say good night. Now, I’m the one saying good night to my sweet Elva forever. My heart has not processed that I will no longer get a call from her, and when I’m down, if I call her, she will not pick up.

I know her life will never be lost because of the love that was shared by all. If anyone asked me about my dear sweet girl, “Has Elva touched your life for the greater good?”, my reply would be, “Is the Pope Catholic?”. Gone but never forgotten; so take your rest, sleep well Lady Ann, and I’ll see you soon.

A BETTER PLACE - A LETTER FROM AUNT ELVA.

The day I went away I was preparing for this day all of my life. I continued my duties as a wonderful mother, grandma and a dutiful wife. But I always kept a suitcase and in it were photos of mother, my Bruce, my Al-Angie and all those that journeyed before me.

In my mind, in my heart, in my visions, in my dreams they painted a picture of a place that was not only stress- free but beautiful and made them happy.

I had traveled many times before but this time was different. I was torn between staying here with my beautiful children and grandchildren, sisters and friends. I heard God whisper you’re important on earth but I promise you your position is more prestigious in the heavens above.

I thought of the full life I led, my busy lifestyle, horticulture, planning, preparing, providing, protecting, one more family get together, one more phone call and I thought of all the places I’ve been - heaven by far sounded the most intriguing.

I sort of figured I could leave empty, I could leave loved, I could leave happy, I could leave a legacy, I could leave happy and healthy and I made a deal with God just before leaving.

Lord let my family remember me as I lived, as I loved, let them be as generous as I was to others, let them mean what they say and say what they mean, let them call, let them visit, let them laugh but most of all let them live a full life, a life poured out. Warm Regards, Aunt

HOW DO YOU SUMMARIZE THE LIFE OF AN AMAZING MOTHER…

sister, wife, friend, but to me an aunt, into a few simple words? It isn’t that I can’t find the words to write, it is more so that I can’t summarize the impact that Aunt Elva had on my life in just a paragraph. Nothing about Aunt Elva’s existence was that simple. She was a pioneer in every aspect of life. Most people knew her as a groundbreaking broadcaster, or for her involvement behind the scenes in politics, but I knew her for her kind heart. When I think of my aunt, I think of love, because she was an embodiment of just that. The amount of love that she poured into me and everyone and everything that she cared about is unmeasurable. When she loved, she loved wholeheartedly. I was her niece, but I have always felt that she loved me like her own child.

Memories of the lovely days I spent in my aunt’s house are countless. One of my earliest memories was of her picking me up from school and making me mac and cheese every day I’d come over because even though I was a picky eater she’d always make exactly what I wanted. And that held true up until last year when I came home and visited her twice. Both times she insisted on making me her amazing stew conch, which she knew was my favorite food, the last time being in November and I had no idea that, that would be the last time that I would ever see or speak to her again.

I want to thank her for believing in me and encouraging me to follow my heart in everything that I do. I also want to thank her for teaching me all about respect because she always had a listening ear and never a judgmental tone, it made it so easy to speak to her. And her words, however complex, or simple, had a way of having a positive impact on every choice you made thereafter. Not only do I idolize her, but I also love her. She was Godly and wise, and fun.

She was loved by many and will be missed by all. I am so grateful that someday I will get to see her again. Love you always Aunt Elva.

TRIBUTE FROM DOROTHY COAKLEY LIFELONG FRIEND.

Elva was my dear and lifelong friend and my best friend when she passed away.

Elva did not let much stand in the way of living a beautiful life, filled with kind deeds and the best laugh God ever created.

My many fond memories of Elva are carved permanently in my heart. I can never forget her.

She was a faithful, true friend who called me every day before she took ill. Often hers was the first voice I heard in the morning and the last one I heard at night. She insisted that she was looking out for me and never once did I doubt her sincerity.

In my most profound moments of grief, Elva was relentless in somehow always breaking through any crowd, no matter how large, to find her way to my side to comfort me. To hold me steady. I still feel the tenderness and strength of her graveside embrace almost 10 years ago as if it were yesterday.

I will continue to pray for the return of that feeling, to keep and comfort me and give me the strength to wake in the morning and go back to sleep at night without hearing the happy familiar voice of my dear best friend.

I will miss her but I will never forget her. DOR

Elva, my GOOD, GOOD, GOOD Friend, service to God and mankind, were your watchwords and the mantra by which you raised your children.

You believe in education and along with your husband, produced TWO of the finest in the land with Dr. Gemma Rolle as a specialist and Andrew Rolle as a Barrister-at-Law who can practice globally.

You were sooo adament about education that you offered to pay my children’s school fees at St. Andrews School BUT, my heart could not allow you to do that.

Tracee, my darling, I’m not going to leave you out. You had a special place in your mamma’s heart because everytime your mamma and I had a conversation, Tracee was priority.

I’m a living testimony that Elva LOVED her children and grandchildren.

Before we talk about anything, Elva would talk about her children and grandchildren from their date of birth to what they were doing at that point in time.

Elva would call me in the morning and ask me to go to Gemma’s house and bring her grandchildren to spend time with her.

I could go on and on and on but I’ll stop here.

But, before I close, I CANNOT forget her dear husband, Anthony “BOOZIE” Rolle.

There was NEVER a conversation WITHOUT Elva mentioning “Boozie.”

So Elva, the time has come when I MUST say “GOODBYE.”

I LOVE YOU, I LOVE YOU, I LOVE YOU!

Farewell, farewell, farewell.

May your Soul Rest in Eternal Peace+

What a friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and grief to bear, And what a privilege to carry, Everything to God in prayer.......... EVERYTHING.

MY FAITHFUL AND ALWAYS LOYAL FRIEND ELVA…

and I met in September 1964 at The Nassau Technical Institute, we became instant friends and that was the beginning of nearly a sixty-year inseparable friendship. We lived less than a mile apart but that was our first meeting. Walking home that first day, as we got to the junction of East Street and Wulff Road, I continued walking eastward, she said to me in that I’m in charge tone.., “well where are you going?” I answered “home,” She said, “ don’t you live over the wall?” I said, “yes I do”... “So why are you going that way? I told her I was afraid of the

guys who hung out at the Milk Stand on East Street, she said to me “You’re with me, they can’t do anything to you anything!” That’s the day I knew I had an older sister who I could always depend on to have my back! That day we walked home together and every day thereafter.

The Wee Hours When You Are Awakened To About Six Missed Calls... you sort of know what follows.

My sister, my friend Elva Rolle has gone home to be with her saviour. Elva I thank you for being my sounding board, my confidant, my encourager and me one of your google guides and your personal “contact” and address book. For all of the advice given; I receive with thanks.

As I reminisce on our friendship, I’m listening to one particular voice note that had both of us on the floor hollering! You were indeed

an excellent member of the human race. A pioneering Bahamian female broadcaster, you were humorous, you were fair, no nonsense, a lover of people, appreciative and loving to family and friends. Your grandchildren were the apple of your eyes. You were a Bahamian woman par excellence who loved your God, your church and our country, especially the settlement of Eight Mile Rock, Grand Bahama.

My condolences to Boozie, Tracee, Gemma and Andrew along with your grandchildren, your siblings, Ethelyn, Ormond, Garry and Patrenda and the entire Russell and Grant clan.

I salute this PHENOMENAL BAHAMIAN WOMAN, Elva Rolle.

I Bid You Goodnight.

MINNA

TO MY VERY DEAR FRIEND, ELVA PATRICIA ANN RUSSELLROLLE

In 1965 I was employed at the Bank of Nova Scotia, Wulff Road and East Street Branch. My co-workers included Anthony Allen, Arthur Chase, Sterling Quant, Judy Coakley, Alpheus Jones, Mary Moss, Olga Brown and Elva Russell. We were like family. Elva and I grew closer to each other and soon became very good friends. In later years, we often reminisce fondly about our times at Scotia, in and outside of the bank.

To save money, Elva and I never bought lunch. We ate together every day at either her family home through Toote Shop Corner, or at my family home on Kenwood Street. We became like family. We also often visited each other’s homes after work and ate dinner together. Elva loved my mother’s cooking, as mummy was from Turks Island and prepared different foods than Elva was used to. She perfected some of these recipes and after mummy’s death - I’d have to call Elva to get the recipe. She used to say to me in her strong, distinctive Elva Russell voice, “Ya TOO wutless; you should know these things’ ‘.

After several years at the bank, we

decided to go off to school to become certified secretaries. We attended The Levitan School of Business in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. While there, we lived in separate homes. In those days, Elva couldn’t comb her own hair so every morning I would comb her hair before we caught the bus. During our time there we met many people, young and old, who became lifelong friends. They included three sisters who lived on the same street as we did who took us under their wings and treated us like family. Elva stayed in contact with the children of these lovely ladies for many, many years and kept me up to date as to what was going on in their lives.

Our Philly friends introduced us to cabarets and the theatre. At the cabarets, we saw a lot of entertainers from the United States and abroad. We enjoyed them all. At one point, a group of our Philly friends came to visit The Bahamas. Elva, some other friends and I showed them a wonderful time, which included visiting every night-club that was open and finishing off the night/morning with the true Nassau tradition of a greasy Keith’s chicken in the bag.

After graduating from Levitan, we returned home. I went back to banking while Elva, deciding that banking wasn’t her passion, pursued a career in broadcasting. She qualified in that area at Graham Junior College in Boston and when completed, she came back home and began her career at ZNS… a job which she loved and excelled at.

Over the years, we remained close friends and had so very many good times together. In the meantime, I got married and lived on Christopher Street where we hosted many parties and had a lot of fun.

Elva became very interested in gardening and joined garden clubs to ensure that she learned everything she could. In later years she became interested in vegetable gardening and often boasted about her produce.

Elva loved life and enjoyed it with family and friends. She also loved politics! I remember how during the campaigns, after joining the FNM, no matter what

time she got home at night, she would call me and then Miriam or vice versa and neither of us could get a word in edgewise! She was determined to get first, Boozie and then, any other candidate elected.

Elva attended church regularly and prior to me becoming a regular church-goer, there wasn’t a single Sunday she didn’t call to ask me if I was going to church - to which I always replied “yes” regardless of my true intentions because I didn’t want to be reprimanded by her. As she was a couple years older than I am, that gave her the right to boss me around.

Elva and I both were very supportive of each other and our families. Many wonderful memories of my life include Elva Russell-Rolle. She was god-mother to my eldest son, Adrian, and I’m godmother to her daughter Tracee, but it’s just like we were god-parents to all our children.

Elva loved her family, her mother, Inez, Pa Russ, Ethelyn, Bruce, Angela, Ormand, Marlon, Garry and Patrenda. Elva acted as though she was the eldest - always in charge. She was called Lady Ann by her dear, late mother.

Elva also loved her husband, her girls, Tracee and Gemma and her prince, Andrew. She also loved Miquela and always spoke very highly of them all.

Andrew and my sons, Anwar and Ari, grew up like brothers and spent and continue to spend lots of time together. When they were younger, Andrew often wanted to come to our house to spend the night with my boys. Those evenings, I would pick Andrew up from home after work. Elva used to carry on so badly about her one boy, as I drove this precious cargo (Andrew) home to my house, I prayed continuously for safe passage. Once we got home, I then prayed continuously that no harm would come to him (at any time) but particularly not while under my watch.

When the grandchildren started coming, Elva was in her glory. Though I didn’t see them much, I knew all about their progress academically and socially. She

| Elva Rolle | This Is My Story 56

had a special love for them and was very proud of them.

In recent months, Elva said that she wasn’t feeling well and was putting out her best for her children and grandchildren. In spite of her not feeling well, she still was determined to water her plants every day and to do whatever she could to help out with the grandchildren.

She always found time to check on her friends, wanting to know that we were okay. Many people know her as a radio and tv personality however, I knew her as a friend whom I loved and appreciated.

I am so grateful that God allowed Elva and I to get to know each other. Though she’s gone now, she will never be forgotten by those of us who knew and loved her. These memories live on in our hearts.

So long my very dear friend. Take your rest and I will see you again in heaven.

Love, Rista!

MY BELOVED...

I will always cherish the memories and the good times, too many to mention.

You will live on in my heart. Even though I am hurting now, I am finding comfort in listening to your voice notes, watching your videos and reading our many, many WhatsApp conversations.

Oh how I wish you could have stayed with us a while longer because I’m not ready to say goodbye. You will be missed. Love always, “Sara Lee”

The greatest trees can grow from the smallest acorns. My friendship with Elva started in a similar way. From this small acorn, a friendship blossomed into one of the strongest imagined. It spanned children, grandchildren, schools, the passing of parents and siblings, politics, tea parties, celebrations of every kind, online shopping, gardening, and many other interests.

I met Elva fifty years ago in the ‘Eastern District’ when I moved into the neighborhood where she was residing with her husband Anthony (Boozie), and daughters Tracee and Gemma. Andrew, her prince, came along a few years later. This was at a time when neighbors paid particular care and attention for one another.

There were many stories or experiences that occurred between us over the years, but there is one that I will never forget. My son Paul was born during the last week of February, and I returned to work the first week of May. Due to a series of unexpected events, I had to dismiss my housekeeper and had no one available to keep Paul while at work.

This is where my friend Elva came to the rescue. She was heavily pregnant with Andrew and having some

difficulties with her pregnancy, but she offered to keep Paul until I could find a replacement. She knew many people who were willing to assist her whenever she needed them and they supplied her with the names of persons for me to contact and interview. In the end, I hired the one that I thought was suitable and she remained with my family for many years. This is just one of the many examples illustrating how resourceful Elva was.

She was a great person who had an opinion on just about everything and she was an icon ahead of her time. She was not shy to share her thoughts and she gave great advice. Elva would encourage you to do your best and she was there if you needed her. She was generous to a fault. She was kind, considerate, loyal, helpful, and dependable.

I will miss Elva dearly and I will cherish every moment that we spent together. I am confident that she is in a better place and I will draw on the experiences we shared over our many years of friendship.

May she rest in peace.

MY DEAR FRIEND,

If I were Picasso I would paint a picture, if I were Jessye Norman I would perform a solo to tell the world of the influence you have had on so many. I would tell the world of your ability to light up a dark room just by entering. I would tell of the humor you found even in unfavorable situations. I would tell of the joy that you gave to those you befriended. I shall miss our latenight conversations and the laughter that only you could evoke.

Goodbye, So Long, Until We Meet Again. Love, Giselle Fielder

RUIZ MUNNINGS ELVA DEDICATION

Elva always believed that I was the one who introduced her to her husband Anthony, a close friend, although he said it was Alfie Stewart.

So, when she got married, I became a loyal counselor, a reliable brother and a devoted friend. Over the decades, we talked about the precious love she had for her parents and siblings, her amazing children and grandchildren, her dear spouse and beloved friends. Also, we discussed her interesting work projects, her passionate political views and her challenging health matters.

During the last few years, Elva and I specifically discussed her beautiful garden, her many various plants, and the hours of utter joy they gave her every day. Regardless of the hard work of watering and fertilizing twice a day, tending to her garden was her holistic therapy. It brought her hours of pleasure and peace of mind every day.

So, my dear sister, as I tour your lovely garden, I will forever remember you, along with your many trusted friends and dedicated family members who now miss you dearly.

One thing that is indisputable is that we all will leave this world one day. How we are remembered is entirely up to each one of us. Our actions and our words are footprints of indelible ink stamped in the hearts of people we encounter.

Elva’s footprints first impacted my life when I was a teenager employed at ZNS. She was my boss, the manager of the production department and I was a graphic artist. Elva was authentic, she knew who she was and was proud of her heritage. She showed strength, but with firmness and gentleness. She displayed integrity with honesty and respect. She exuded humility, but reminded us to never forget that we were also worthy.

Elva loved her family and spoke often of them - that’s how I know Toote Shop Corner. She made sure that any

of her family members who traveled to Exuma paid me a visit, the latest being her daughter Gemma. If Elva loved you, she never held back; she made sure you knew it. I knew it. She was a doting mother. Her children were everything to her. In our last conversation she was so happy to let me know of their accomplishments and how proud she was to see the adults they are today.

The indelible footprints Elva left behind are bright and beautiful. Continue the legacy dear family. To Mr. Anthony Rolle, Tracee, Gemma and Prince Andrew, to the entire family my deepest sympathy.

Sleep in peace dear Elva and rise in glory.

Your friend, Wendy.

Iwent to Graham Junior College in Boston Massachusetts, where I studied Mass Communications. That involved a lot of stuff. Graham Junior College was the first colour television studio in the United States. And I was happy to have gone there. I think I was the second Bahamian to go there, but afterwards we had other students came behind me. But I started studying Television Performance. But very quickly I learned hey, somebody would be telling you what to do all the time, and I liked to be the boss. I liked to be in charge. So I switched and I studied Television Production. And in so doing, since I was the darkest person in my group, I found myself still doing Performance. Because, you know, you had to learn how to light a dark-skinned person. And then I had sort of an accent according to the Americans. And so they liked to hear me talk, so every time they were doing some production, they wanted me to participate. But I liked the television production because I was able to use my creative skills, create shows...well back in the day also we had to, if you wanted a forest, you had to make the trees. So you learned to use your hands.

Today we remember our former broadcast colleague and friend, Elva Russell-Rolle.

When Elva arrived at ZNS radio 52 years ago, there were only two other Bahamian female on-air announcers. Elva was the youngest of the three.

She was fortunate to join older broadcasters including Louis Hanchell and Carl Bethel,at the moment The Bahamas was becoming a sovereign state in a rapidly changing social and cultural world.

Having three female voices at the national broadcaster was nothing short of revolutionary in the 1970s. Cindy Williams, Nadeen Campbell-Beneby and Elva Russell-Rolle helped shaped Radio Bahamas sound and culture at a time when few women held prominent roles at the Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas.

When television 13 was established in 1977 Elva moved from being a Presenter to a TV Producer/Director. She was a trailblazer who transformed the role of women in the production of Television programmes.

She was dedicated to her craft and became a leader of the young BROADCASTERS who she mentored. Like so many I am deeply saddened by her passing but I am thankful for her life.

On behalf of my wife Dawne, I offer my deepest condolences to her husband, Anthony and their children and to the extended family.

May God bless her memory.

When I joined the Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas, the pioneering female broadcaster was transitioning to a more senior role in production. She was always very kind but firm with me teaching me the ropes. Our relationship grew beyond coworkers. We became friends visiting with her and her family getting to know her siblings as well. One of the things we always spoke about was her children I recall at ZNS her sharing their successes in their respective careers. As a result, it was Dr. Gemma that did my colonoscopy. Over the years we worked together in a different arena to further strengthen the bonds of friendship. She was nononsense and very direct with her speech. I found her to be a genuine individual- what you saw was what you got. Sleep on Elva take your rest.

From the day I heard your voice on ZNS, while I was still a teenager in High School, I fell in love with Elva Russell-Rolle. As fate would have it, we finally met in person, during the election campaign of 2007, and from that day to now, we have shared an endearing friendship.

When I needed an ear to hear me, you were there. When I needed a shoulder to lean on, you were there for me. When I needed a scolding, you were there for me, and when I needed a name for my baking company, you provided it for me (Frankly the Best Sweets).

Similarly, when you needed someone to listen, you would call me, and we would have long chats about everything. You invited me into your family life and introduced me to all your family members. Your mom became my mom, your sisters, my sisters, and your brothers my brother.

When you got ill, you told me before I heard it from anyone else, and while you were having treatments, you would call me to say that all is okay, and “I’m trusting in God Frank.”

I prayed that this day would never come, but as you always said...”everything in God’s time and according to his plan.”

That last time I laid eyes on you, on the evening of Christmas Eve, 2021, when I delivered your Christmas cakes, I felt that I might never see you again...there was a strangeness in the air.

I recall you calling me to say, with lots of laughter “boy you must have put all your feet in that cake” and we laughed when I responded with, “yea, I’m trying to fix you.”

Saying goodbye to such a GREAT friend is not easy, but I take comfort in knowing that you are now happy and at peace in the presence of our Lord, whom you looked forward to being with, with peace and tranquility.

Elva, I will miss you and the opportunity to call you, just to get a good fusing from you. You were, are, and will always be, a GREAT FRIEND.

As I gaze at the little desk plaque you gave me that reads...”Friends surround you with love. A sweet friendship refreshes the soul (Proverbs 27:9)”, I will smile, knowing that despite our current circumstances, we are still GREAT FRIENDS. I MISS AND LOVE YOU!!!

“And here comes Bob Marley. So somebody said, this lady right here has a question for you. So he looked at me, I said yes. I understand sometimes Rastafarians don’t smell too good. And that was so disgusting. But you know what he did? He made to run after me, so I started running. So he ran behind me in the studio, and when he caught up with me, he hugged me by my head under his arm. He said, you smell anything? And then he gave me my lesson 101, of how they wash their hair with aloes and how they clean their skin and blah blah blah. But I thought that was a wonderful experience for me.”

Photo shows Mrs. Elva Rolle and Sir Sidney Poitier at the Screen Actor’s Guild (SAG) awards celebration in New York City in the year 2000 when His Excellency Anthony Rolle served as Ambassador to the United Nations in New York City.

His Excellency had fallen ill and as we were hosts for the event, me and my sister, Ethelyn Russell-Rolle along with a large contingent of Bahamians including Sir Sidney’s siblings and other family members, were Sir Orville Turnquest, former Governor General of The Bahamas, former Deputy Prime Minister, Hon.

Frank Watson, the late Sir William Allen as well as the late Calvin Johnson who served as Consul General and many other notables from the tri-state area were present for this gala event.

The room was filled with excitement as expressions of our love and appreciation for his achievements flowed, as we all embraced Sir Sidney.

As usual, he did us proud.

To Sir Sidney with love.

Mrs. Rolle was a very nice lady. She was like a mother to me. Mrs. Rolle always checked up on me through work, ensuring that I was ok. She would always send a WhatsApp message or call me to see how classes were coming along. Sometimes I felt like giving up and she would always say “Now look here, don’t ever use those words, you made it this far, so why quit now”? When you try to explain she would say “that wasn’t for you to respond. Stay focused and it will all be over.” I would only say “yes ma’am.” She always expressed the importance of education. She had a pure heart. Mrs. Rolle fought for what she believed was right. I am so grateful that I had a positive bond with Mrs. Rolle. She definitely will be missed but never forgotten.

The country has lost a wonderful, talented young lady. While at ZNS Elva produced excellent Tourism Awareness vídeos for MoT that got the message across perfectly. A beautiful soul has gone to be with the Lord. Deepest condolences to her husband, Boozie, my University of Miami classmate, and to her children - Tracee, Gemma and Andrew. May Elva’s soul rest in eternal peace and rise in glory.

Iwill always remember your words of wisdom, beautiful smile and infectious laugh. Take your rest my sister.

Elva Russell Rolle was a giant in the broadcasting industry in the Bahamas. She was a naturally gifted radio and television host with impeccable acumen and command of the English. She has inspired a generation of young Bahamians and after she appeared on Immediate Response on ZNS with me, she would call me often after my show to give me pointers. She was selfless like that. I have known her all of my life and was close to her brothers Bruce, Ormand, and Garry. I thank her today publicly for raising the ceiling on my possibilities

Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment shared, until it becomes a Memory. You were a Gift loan to us and shall be remembered and treasured forever in our Hearts!

Rest In Peace Elva Russell-Rolle!

From, Sherrymae Saunders

You will always be missed. Especially December 29

Elva was truly the life of the party. She enjoyed celebrating life and always found a way to make others smile. I enjoyed listening and chatting with you. The picture here with us in Yellow, we were celebrating my 56th birthday. At that party, Elva told me she had to look hard to find yellow to wear because that’s not her color:) That night we had a BLAST on the dance floor. Elva, you will be missed. May your soul rest in heavenly peace.

The Free National Movement has lost an esteemed Meritorious Council Member (MCM) and patriot, who never faltered in her push to see better for our beautiful Commonwealth.

Elva Russell-Rolle was revered for her work ethic, project management skills, and commitment to quality and style in all her endeavours.

While Elva is remembered as a leading broadcaster, and insurance industry professional we in the Free National Movement came to appreciate her political acumen, and never-ending support for the party that she so loved She worked tirelessly promoting the efforts of the FNM and its candidates She stood with and defended the principles and vision of her party in our glorious moments of victory and in the disappointing times of defeat.

Elva assisted and supported the party, its members, candidates, and supporters both financially and through volunteerism She was never shy to give her opinion, she would always share a word to the wise and stood strong in her beliefs. She was an extraordinary human being, effective in her delivery and deliberation of issues of the day, but most of all she was honest, compassionate, and respected by us all.

Elva was a wife supported her husband’s political ambitions and is known for having been a vital organizer and backbone of his political campaigns. However, in her own right Elva developed her own character of advocacy and representation. This was was evident in the development of her deliberate and consistent voice on matters of equality of women, and her dedication to human rights. Elva’s tenacity and strength were always admirable and formidable.

Elva obtained the highest level of award in the Free National Movement, the award of Meritorious Council Member (MCM), this is a premier and limited category of member of the FNM The award goes to those who have delivered decades of considerable sacrifice and resources to the FNM, and whose advice and wise counsel are sought after. She deserved to be MCM and so much more.

The Free National Movement joins with former Member of Parliament and MCM Anthony "Boozie" Rolle, Tracee, Gemma, and Andrew, as well as Elva’s grandchildren, siblings and all who knew and loved her, as we say farewell and well done to a wonderful woman, worthy of praise.

May her soul rest in peace.

Each of us present today can attest that Elva Russell-Rolle was certainly one of those persons.
