elcome to Crivitz and the Near North vacationland, your affordable family destination.
Located one hour north of Green Bay, in the heart of the north woods, we have everything you want in a vacation area. We’re just closer than the others. Our county is the “set your own pace” place. Go like the dickens or take your time and proceed quietly. As you will see, there is plenty to do here, or plenty of ways to sit back and do nothing. The Near North is a great place to live, work and play.
We hope to see you soon!

T
he Crivitz area has a deep history of logging. Logs were moved first by water way, then horse-drawn sled and to this day they still use the highway and railroad. If you have ever driven through the Village of Crivitz you probably have been stopped by the train filled with logs. The trains always seem to go through town during the busiest time of day. It is a running joke in Crivitz if you are ever late “it is the train’s fault”. lol In the late 1800s Crivitz was known as a sawmill town, “Ellis Junction.” The Milwaukee and Northern Railroad line ran through Crivitz. The area’s beautiful timber was sawn at a mill owned by Butler-Muller Company, who sold their interests to Hieronymus Zech. Mr. Zech started a major land selling campaign, selling the logged off areas to immigrants from the Milwaukee and Chicago area. The immigrants then started farms on the cleared land.
In 1905, the Crivitz Pulp and Paper Company was formed by a group of men and they also built a dam in Crivitz on the Peshtigo River. You can still see remnants of this dam from the bridge near Dan & Tim’s Riverside Bar. The pulp mill operated until 1925, when the dam washed out. Once the plentiful timber was gone, along with the pulp mill, the area became more of a farming community & tourist destination. Today logging companies still bring their timber to the rail station in Crivitz to be transported. Crivitz is best known for the natural beauty of its woodlands, lakes, flowages and streams. Crivitz is one of Wisconsin’s most popular tourist destinations.

our visit to the near north would not be complete without stopping at some of the many public parks in the area. Most of these parks provide public access to rivers, lakes, and waterfalls. Others access public forest lands with hiking and biking trails. These parks range from basic public areas put together by the civilian conservation corps many years ago, to the more modern developed recreational facilities with recent improvements.

ne of the fastest growing pastimes in this area is bird watching. The diverse makeup of forestlands that are accessible to the public provide great opportunity for viewing a great variety of bird species. Winding rivers and quiet lakes lend an altogether different bird watching experience. Whether you prefer walking woodland trails, or canoeing a quiet stretch of river, the near north is not just for the birds, but for the people that love to watch them as well.

olks love to come to Crivitz to fish. Whether you are a hardcore Musky hunter or just want to wet a line while you let the sun tan your hide, the places to fish in this area are beautiful, peaceful, and brimming with plenty of fish. Hit the lakes, streams or rivers. Fish for the big one or let the kids catch so many panfish you’ll get tired of baiting their hook. Get serious about May walleye, June bass, August blue gills, September sturgeon, October musky, then start all over when the ice gives you access to all of the above.
C
rivitz Area lakes benefited from the DNR “Walleye Initiative”. This program was developed by Governor Walker’s office and the legislation to provide additional dollars to raise larger fish to be stocked in Wisconsin waters. These larger fish have a much better survival rate. This historic investment in Crivitz area waters will benefit both anglers and angler-related businesses alike. Bigger walleyes and more of them are sure to come. Through quick action our local DNR Fish Biologist, Chip Long, was able to secure large number of fish for the Crivitz waters. Lake Noquebay Anglers Partnership stocked the fry in Lake Noquebay. Both Walleye and Muskellunge were stocked in the lake listed below: Waterbody

id you know Wisconsin has more water ski teams than any other state and two of the best are in the Crivitz area? You will not have a problem fitting a show into your vacation. There are performances three nights a week starting midJune through mid-August. The Twin Bridge Ski Team performs west of Crivitz on the High Falls Flowage, at the Stephenson Town Park Thursdays and Saturdays at 6:30pm. The Crivitz Ski Cats perform east of Crivitz on Lake Noquebay, Lake Noquebay County Park on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 6:30pm.
Both shows have no admission fee, but donations are welcome. Food and refreshments are available for purchase on site. Bring your lawn chair or blanket to watch the show. These shows are excellent entertainment for the whole family. You will see some of the best skiers in the state of Wisconsin, including those who have skied professionally all over the world. You will see unbelievable barefoot pyramids, twenty girl ballet lines, mixed doubles, four tier pyramids and jumping that will have you asking “how did they do that?

Looking for a little beach action for you and the kids? How about a little tour of the best beaches in the near north area? Start at the big lake, Lake Noquebay Park. Fine sand and a gradual taper to deeper water make this one of the most popular swimming spots in the county. The park also has playground equipment for the kids and a boat landing from which to set sail. Rent the lodge for gatherings or just for picnic fun. If fun on the flowage is what you would like to try, then look up Twin Bridge County Park. It is just a minute or two from Tommy Thompson State Park. This park has not only a great beach area, but, camping, showers, picnic areas, grill sites, and boat landings up and down the flowage. The pristine shoreline along the flowage looks like the far off Canadian wilderness, but it is much closer to home.
14
www.crivitz.com
Moving on to the jewel of Stephenson township, we head over to Newton Lake. This recently rebuilt beach area has a sandy beach area that is just off the main path. Little Newton has long been a local favorite of both full and part time residents. A bit less well known is the beach area at boat landing 7-Wolf Rock. Locals swim out to the rock and jump into deeper water. This landing is not just for the boaters, it’s also great for the floaters! Last on the list is an area a bit further north. The scenic drive up Highway I (Parkway) will take you through a large part of Marinette County’s Forest land to Goodman Park. Where’s the beach? Not here. Mother nature has provided her own water park. The slippery rock formations have been worn smooth by the constant flow of Peshtigo River water. If you plan it just right, you slide down the rocks and into the shallow pool below. This is cool whitewater and very refreshing on a hot summer day.

he two largest and most popular bodies of water in this area are Lake Noquebay and the Peshtigo River Flowages. The wandering shorelines on these two waterways provide boaters with hours of touring pleasure. Forested islands dot both bodies of water, each one having a little something different to look at. Whether you are cruising, skiing, sailing, or just touring, a boat ride on any of the “Crivitz” lakes is an enjoyable way to spend the day.

The Crivitz-Stephenson Museum focuses their collection on the rich logging, farming and tourism history of our area. The Museum is located one block west of McDonalds in Crivitz at the intersection of Oak St. and South Ave. just across from the High School. A must see at the museum is the restored logging camp building originally constructed in 1872 on the shores of Lake Noquebay for the Peshtigo River Lumber Co. The building has been lovingly restored and houses a collection of the tools used by the early loggers. An area of interest in the building is a hand carved replica of an early logging camp. See how the loggers lived, worked, ate and slept in the early logging camps. A recent addition to our museum is one of the first resort cabins built on Lake Noquebay. The “Honeymoon” cabin was built in the late 1800’s and originally used by the survey crews for the logging companies. The building was later moved to the northwest shore of the lake and was a part of Ahle’s Resort for over 100 years as cabin for vacationers. In the cabin you will find a pictorial history of tourism from the area. See how the early vacationers spent their time in our beautiful area. Our large collection of antique farm equipment shows how the early farmers turned the cutover country into productive farm lands. Inside our museum browse through our displays of how people lived in the early days of Crivitz, look over our collection Native American artifacts along with what an early school room looked like. Make the Crivitz Museum one of your must see stops while vacationing in the Crivitz area, it will be worth your time. Our museum is open Wednesday through Saturdays from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Open Wednesday - Saturday Noon - 4pm Memorial Day - Labor Day

ocated just north of Marinette County’s largest inland lake is the clubhouse for the Lake Noquebay Sportsman’s club. The club was formed by a group of local individuals with a passion for trap shooting. A parking area was installed, then through donations and volunteer efforts, a club house was built. A few years later, housing for the members running the trap throwers. More recently, voice activated trap throwers were installed. A rifle range was also set up. The club is self sustaining, through dues payments and range fees. A board of directors is elected annually and controls the activities held at the club. Membership is available through the club. Several trap shooting leagues are run throughout the year. The trap range is currently open to both members and the general public. The club hosts hunter safety courses and youth hunts. orse riding trails are becoming more and more popular in Marinette County due to the efforts of club riders. One of the newer trails is located on the east end of Lake Noquebay just 5 miles north east of the Village of Crivitz. The Clip Clop Trail Riders Club is a non-profit club serving this area. The new trail is nestled in a parcel made up of 3,200 acres of Marinette County Forest Lands. The trail winds through wooded upland areas some lowlands, and is just the right mix of gently rolling hills and level ground. The club secured donations and went to work improving, building, and maintaining, 20 miles of trails, a campsite area, with picnic tables, fire rings, and high lines used to tie up horses. A leisurely ride on the trail takes about 6 hours. Horseback riders and the general public are welcome. Hikers are encouraged to use this asset as well. A Marinette County Parks sticker is required if you decide to camp. Donations for trail improvements are accepted but not required. here the great northern forests meet America’s dairy land. This is where abundant wildlife has a chance to roam for miles and miles without coming in contact with people on a regular basis. Numbers of deer, upland game birds, and waterfowl are seen regularly as you drive our winding country roads. If you are lucky and have a keen eye, you may get a glance at some of the more cautious wildlife hiding in the forest, like wolves, coyotes, bobcats, bear, and let’s not forget Bigfoot. I have to admit though, most of those reports are made anonymously. Take a short drive to public land, then a walk in the woods with your dog and favorite shotgun and you can let go of all of the stress that everyday life builds around you. Maybe you prefer sitting quietly in a deer stand waiting for the “king of the mountain” to stroll by. Hunters love our “Gateway to the north”.

he Crivitz Area is not only the gateway to the north, it is has home to picturesque roadways designated as “Rustic roads”. Two scenic roadways provide quiet beautiful trips through the local north woods. The first is on the east side of Lake Noquebay, it travels through the wildlife area consisting over 1,000 acres of county forest property. This road accesses a cross country ski trail and connects with an even larger body of Marinette County Forest land. Noquebay’s rustic road (Right of Way Road) is beautiful and takes only about half an hour.
the west side of the Peshtigo River Flowages when you are traveling north of County Road W. Several boat landings are accessed off Parkway, and a stop to take in the beauty of the pristine shores of the flowages is highly recommended. Continue your journey north of County Road C and “rustic” becomes even more evident. North of Cty C the road turns to a gravel roadway cutting through much of Marinette County’s wilderness forest lands. The Peshtigo River (now on the west side of the road) plays guest to a couple of the county’s most popular parks, Goodman and McClintock. Camping, hiking, biking, and access to trailways are along your entire journey. The Parkway “rustic road” can absorb most of a day, depending on how many of the landings, camps, and parks you may stop to enjoy. Whatever your choice, a relaxing drive in the near north is a great way to enjoy a vacation day.

The second rustic road is west of Crivitz and starts south of the Marinette County line. A ten minute drive west of Crivitz on County Road W will bring you to Parkway Road. Parkway Road (aka County Road I, north of Cty C) is a beautiful roadway that twists and turns along

he natural landscape of the area presents great opportunities for hiking and biking. Marinette County is the waterfall capital of the Wisconsin so put on your hiking shoes and explore the beauty along the rivers. The Lake Noquebay Trails, just northeast of Crivitz are often used for hiking and biking. County forest and state wildlife area offers three different trails. These six miles of marked trails run through upland forest and wooded lowlands. The Thunder Mountain Overlook, west of Crivitz on Thunder Mountain Road, is the highest point in Marinette County. It features three miles of trails with stunning views. Marinette County Forests have miles of trails and dirt roads open to the public for nonmotorized use. Governor Thompson State Park maintains ten trails. These trails cover a variety of terrains and spectacular views of lakes, flowages and granite outcroppings.
