Every year, I hike high up on Hemlock Trail. I look southwest, past tawny trunks of scattered pine and cedar trees. Far below lie sapphire patches of water. Behind are the rugged bluffs of Fish Creek. It’s my favorite place in Peninsula State Park. What’s yours?

Wisconsin established state parks to preserve places of singular beauty, but also as peace offerings to all citizens, rich or poor. Park founders recognized the healing power of healthy recreation in an unspoiled landscape. Thoreau called it the “tonic of wildness.” Nature’s medicine is just as needed today. So, yes, experience exciting Door County adventures, but find a favorite Peninsula place, too, one that renews your spirit. See you on the trail!

SEVERE WEATHER SAFETY BE PREPARED Discuss safety plans ahead of time. Have a flashlight with extra batteries and a first aid kit. At your site, note any tree limbs that could fall from strong winds. Secure gear, including tents. Know the location of campground buildings and the campground host site. Be sure children know the family campsite number. Consider the following:

STAY TUNED AND ALERT Keep an eye on the sky. If severe weather approaches, tune to local radio stations (listed on page 2). Campground hosts have weather radios. Static may indicate nearby lightning. Remember, a warning means a severe thunderstorm or tornado has been sighted. A watch means conditions are favorable for severe weather. Share information with your neighbors. SEEK SHELTER Peninsula cannot provide a storm shelter to accommodate hundreds of campers. There are no approved storm-proof buildings in any campground. THUNDERSTORM TIPS If you are boating or swimming, get to land and take shelter immediately. If you can hear thunder, the storm is close enough for you to be struck by lightning. If you are in the woods, take shelter under the shortest trees, away from power lines. Squat low to the ground; do not lay down. Avoid areas that may flood. TORNADO TIPS If a tornado approaches while you are outdoors, find a low spot or embankment which might shelter you from wind and blowing debris. Stay low.

EMERGENCY INFORMATION

Emergencies 911

Park Headquarters 920-868-3258 Hours: 8 a.m.–11 p.m. (varies) late May through mid-October and generally 8 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. the remainder of the year. Campground Hosts provide non-emergency assistance, information and are equipped with cell phones. Hosts sites are 323, 525, 619 and 783. Coast Guard 920-743‑3367, Sturgeon Bay. Complaints and Disturbances If you observe a violation or have a complaint report it immediately to Park Headquarters or a campground host. If a violation occurs after hours that requires emergency response call 911. Always include key information: vehicle make, model, license, and campsite number. Fire Call 911 if fire control is needed. Report any fire immediately to Park Headquarters.

Welcome!

On behalf of the park staff I would like to welcome you to Peninsula State Park, Wisconsin’s most complete park and a favorite camping destination. Peninsula draws over a million visitors annually and is one of the many jewels of Door County. With 468 campsites, three group campsites, a nature center, lighthouse, outdoor theater, golf course, swimming beach, biking and hiking trails, 150-foot bluffs, and eight miles of Lake Michigan shoreline you’ll find diverse recreation. Please be sure to check out an amazing sunset from Weborg Point or Sven’s Bluff, my personal favorites. Every year, staff engage in a variety of improvement projects. This year, you’ll see new tile in Tennison and Welcker’s shower buildings. Both buildings received roof replacements with new ventilation systems, too. Look for upgraded outdoor showers at Nicolet Beach. In addition, the DNR installed a new self-pay electronic kiosk at the Eagle Terrace entrance station. Visitors can now purchase (credit card) daily and annual admission stickers and trail passes. The kiosk prints a dated and timed receipt which visitors place inside the driver’s side dashboard while touring the park. Visitors have 30 days to exchange the receipt at any Wisconsin state park for an annual vehicle admission sticker. Thank you for supporting Peninsula’s partners, including Friends of Peninsula State Park. The Friends hard work and dedication, along with their amazing fundraising efforts, have helped advance projects including Eagle Tower and the Nature Center addition. For more information visit PeninusulaFriends.org. I hope you enjoy your time with family and friends discovering all that Peninsula has to offer! It’s where memories are made! A .6 mile section of Sentinel Trail is surfaced with a hard-packed limestone base to facilitate access. Please contact Park Headquarters at 920-868-3258 regarding the permit process for power driven mobility devices.

CAMPGROUND SERVICES Maps and Rules pages 12-19. Campground Hosts give assistance, information, and communicate facility needs to park staff. Host sites are 323, 525, 619 and 783. Garbage/Recycling Dumpsters are located in each campground. Campers are responsible for keeping sites clean by bringing refuse to the dumpsters. Recycle – it’s the law! Lost & Found items are collected at Park Headquarters. Propane is available at Nelson Shopping Center and the BP gas station, both north of Fish Creek on Highway 42. Trailer Dump Station is located on Bluff Road east of the Nature Center. It is normally open May 1 through mid-October. Campers may not drain waste water or sewage on the ground.

CAMPFIRES Fires must be small and carefully tended in designated campground and public fire rings. Never move the fire ring. Be cautious of wind direction, sparks and scorching trees. Watch children carefully. Never burn painted or treated wood, plastics or trash. Campers may gather wood for use in the park, but it must be both dead and on the ground. Never cut limbs or remove any part of a standing tree, alive or dead. Make sure a fire is completely extinguished before leaving. Firewood available for sale through private concessionaire on Bluff Road. Woodyard Hours *May be closed in inclement weather. • 5-7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays May 4 & 5, 11 & 12, 18 & 19. • 4-7 p.m. daily (4-8 p.m. Friday) Thursday, May 24-Saturday, September 1. • 4-6 p.m. daily Sunday, September 2-Sunday, October 14. • Off-season hours posted at the Woodyard and Park Headquarters. 4

FLYING RELATED ACTIVITIES

TRAIL SAFETY Trails (page 14-15) vary in difficulty. Trails may become slippery when wet. Use caution on steep climbs and descents, as well as near unprotected bluffs. Stay behind barriers. Watch children closely.

Including but not limited to hang-gliding, sky diving, flying model airplanes and operating drones are not permitted in the park.

PETS See page 18 Pets must be on a leash not longer than eight feet and under control at all times. Pets must not interfere with the enjoyment of the park by others. Pets are not allowed in buildings, picnic areas, Nicolet Beach, or on nature trails. Owners are responsible for cleaning up after their pets. Pets may not be left unattended at any time. Pets are allowed at The Pines picnic area.

PICNICKING The carry-in, carry-out policy of Wisconsin State Parks requires day-use visitors to remove their own trash and recyclables. Peninsula does not provide waste or recycling containers for picnickers. Please restrict fires to charcoal grills or designated fire rings. If you bring your own grill, dispose of hot coals in the nearest picnic grill. Extinguish all fires before leaving. Do not feed wild animals, including gulls. Biologists have linked high gull populations to increased levels of E.coli bacteria in local waters. Playgrounds are at Nicolet Beach, Tennison Bay Campground and the Fish Creek picnic area.

ROAD SAFETY Posted speed limits must be followed. All users must share the roads. Watch for motor vehicles, bicycles, in-line skates, pedestrians, and children. For your safety, in-line skates are not allowed on Shore and Bluff Roads. All motor vehicles and play devices (scooters, skateboards, etc.) are prohibited on sidewalks and walkways. Play devices are prohibited on all park roadways. Bicycles, including Fat Bikes, are allowed on park roads and snowmobile trails; however, fat bikes are not encouraged on snowmobile trails when open to snowmobiling for safety reasons. Bikes are prohibited on Peninsula winter ski trails and all hiking trails.

BOATING Boaters All watercraft must be equipped with a Coast Guard approved personal flotation device for each person aboard. Do not overload your craft. Sudden storms may occur. Small craft operators should be extremely cautious when on the waters of Green Bay. If capsized, stay with your craft until help arrives. Boaters should be aware of their wake and stay well away from swimmers. Nicolet Bay is a slow no wake area. Mooring No boat may be moored or anchored on the shore, or left unattended. A Launch Ramp is located at Nicolet Bay. Overflow and overnight parking is available at the amphitheater lot (48hour limit for non-campers). Tie-up to ramp piers is prohibited except for launching and take-out. A Kayak Launch is located at Tennison Bay Campground.

WATER SAFETY Swimming Swim only at a designated beach. Nicolet Beach is open 6 a.m. – 11 p.m. daily. No lifeguard on duty. Food, glass containers, beverages, soap and detergent and dogs are prohibited on the sand beach. Do not swim alone, at night, or in unfamiliar places. Never dive into water of unknown depth. Watch children closely when near water. Use caution when wading in unknown waters as water depth may change abruptly. Green Bay and Lake Michigan can be dangerously cold. Swimmers should be extremely cautious of areas where the current appears to flow away from the shore. If caught in an outflowing current, swim across rather than against the current as the flow is usually rather narrow. The WI DNR does not monitor ice conditions. Exercise extreme caution. Ice may not be thick enough to support a person. Underwater currents, springs and animals may cause thin ice.

Be Safe! Wear a helmet. Bicyclists must obey all vehicle laws, which include riding on the right side of the road, with traffic. Remember to warn others when passing. Supervise children closely. Be wary of loose gravel or sand, especially after rain. Descend downgrades slowly, in full control. Be prepared to stop. Pull completely off the trail or road when viewing wildlife or scenery.

RELIGIOUS SERVICES Local church service schedules are available at Park Headquarters. Nondenominational services are held at the amphitheater at 11 a.m. Sunday, late June through Labor Day.

PERMITS REQUIRED Commercial Use Any person collecting funds for a business or providing services for a fee which involves that person’s physical presence in the park is required to first obtain a commercial use permit. dnr.wi.gov/ topic/parks/rules/commercialuse. Metal Detectors may be used on DNR land or waters only for locating specific lost personal items. A permit is required. dnr.wi.gov/topic/ parks/rules/metaldetect.

Peninsula’s hunting tradition began in 1992 with a nineday muzzleloader deer hunt in designated areas. That tradition continues with the addition of archery and trapping in designated areas on specific dates. For more information visit Park Headquarters or ask a ranger.

This park mixes bluffs, forests and scenic shore along gravel-surfaced Sunset Bike Route. Choose unsurfaced off-road trails (cyclists age 16 and older must purchase a trail pass) for more kick. A narrow bike lane along Shore Road extends from Park Headquarters to Bluff Road, and then to Nicolet Beach.

Peninsula’s cobblestone shore provides excellent spawning habitat for smallmouth bass and northern pike. In deeper waters, anglers catch chinook salmon, perch and trout. Cast a line at Nicolet Boat Launch or Weborg Point, which both have accessible piers.

Poles are available for free loan at the Nature Center. Bait available for sale at the Nicolet Beach Camp Store.

MOBILITY TIPS Several park places accommodate varying levels of mobility, whether you’re pushing a baby stroller or recovering from knee surgery. Skyline Road winds atop the length of Peninsula’s three bluffs, offering picturesque views and attractive pull-offs, even from inside a car. Picnic spots like Nelson’s Point serve as destinations for families of all ages and abilities. The Nature Center and grounds are a smart choice, too (see page 27). For more ideas, see ACCESSIBLITY (page 4).

Peninsula doesn’t hibernate. Want proof? Strap on a pair of snowshoes (5 trail miles) or cross-country skis (16 trail miles, classic/skate). Sled at Hill 17 (no toboggans please) or snowmobile (17 miles). Camp at Tennison (electric sites available).

and Tennison Bay kayak launch.

Listen for the musical trill of winter wrens in Peninsula’s evergreen forests and the wuk, wuk alarm call of the pileated woodpecker. Weborg and Nelson points, Tennison Bay, and forest edges along Middle Road are excellent birding sites. Peninsula is a designated Migratory Bird Stopover. Look for a NEW bird sign along Shore Road!

■ Sky High Bluffs One hundred fifty-foot tall bluffs soar skyward along rugged Eagle Trail. The bluffs are part of the Niagara Escarpment, the fossil-rich backbone of the park. They began forming 420 million years ago at the outer rim of a shallow, saltwater sea. The escarpment extends from eastern Wisconsin to Niagara Falls.

■ Winter Sports

Venture along Peninsula’s forty miles of multi-use trails. Watch for federally threatened lake iris, trilliums, lady’s-slipper orchids and columbines. Purchase a Peninsula Wildflower Guide ($2, Friends Merchandise) and support park nature education.

If you go to Welcker’s Shelter just after sunset to watch the surviving bats emerge, behave ethically. NEVER shine flashlights at bats. REMAIN QUIET. In addition, stay on Eagle and other trails to help protect sensitive plant and animal eco-suites along the bluffs.

Over the past decade, white-nose syndrome has killed millions of U.S. bats. It’s impacted all four Wisconsin cave bat species. At Peninsula, little brown bats have declined by 85%. Every year, insectivorous bats save farmers and foresters billions of dollars by consuming large numbers of agricultural pests. Bats play an important role in sustaining fragile cave ecosystems, too. ■ Peninsula State Park Golf Course 920-854-5791

peninsulagolf.org Imagine a 69-yard, over the bluff, par three hole. This signature eight hole, designed in 1926 by Alex Cunningham, is one reason golfers consider Peninsula a course with great character. Tee time reservations are recommended. Individual and group golf lessons are available with Peninsula Golf Associates (PGA) pros Sylvia Ferdon and Matt Stottern. This year, an irrigation system upgrade will insure many years of great play. The Peninsula Golf Course and Driving Range has been

going strong for ninety years. If you’re new to the sport or want to introduce children to the game, consider PGA’s First Tee program, ten weeks of lessons that reinforce values like integrity and perseverance. It runs June – August, ending with a celebratory family cook-out. Another option is to visit PGA’s award-wining six-hole par three Short Course. “Holes range from 65 to 115 yards,” explained PGA Manager Jason Daubner. “The Short Course has simple bunkers and greens with generous collars.” Family Time Golf (twilight fees apply) is another option, “in play” daily starting at 4:30 p.m., Memorial Day through midSeptember. Bike Route on Roads

Legend

Lone Pine Trail (D-E) 0.5 mile, one way. Moderate. This trail connects to several convenient loops. Ascend a dolostone bluff then hike a forest dominated by beech, maple and oak trees. Can you spot the solitary white pine, the trail’s namesake, now lying on the forest floor? Access at the southeast corner of South Nicolet Campground.

Hidden Bluff Trail (B-C) 0.75 mile, one way. Moderate. This spur of Sunset Bike Route is accessed at The Nature Center. Look for red tinged bulblet fern cascading down rocky outcroppings. Jack-in-thepulpit flowers are prolific.

Hemlock Trail (A-B) 1.8 miles, one-way. Moderate. Lake iris greets hikers at the edge of a cedar-hemlock forest. Skirt up a low bluff and catch glimpses of the Strawberry Islands through birch and pine trees. Access near Weborg Campground or Tennison Bay Campground.

Eagle Trail 2 mile loop. Difficult. Remarkable 150-foot cliffs, springs, and forested terraces make Eagle Trail memorable. Several steep, rocky sections offset a level segment that parallels Eagle Harbor. Trilliums and thimbleberry brighten the trailside, as does less common cranberry vibernum. Access at Eagle Terrace or Eagle Panorama.

Skyline Trail 3 mile loop. Moderate. Climb to Sven’s Bluff through rolling terrain. Watch for stone fences and open meadows, remnants of long ago farms. Hikers can connect to other trails via Skyline. Access at Skyline parking lot on Shore Road.

Sentinel Trail 2 mile loop. Easy. Walk past stands of maple, beech and red pine. Trail signs interpret forest ecology A .6 mile section is graveled to facilitate mobility.

Nicolet Bay Trail (G-H) 2.2 miles, one way. Moderate. Watch for wild turkeys and pileated woodpeckers in a forest of basswood, white ash and hemlock trees. This trail passes within a quarter mile of Nicolet Beach with convenient access gained from the amphitheater parking lot or Welcker’s Campground.

Off-Road Bike Trails 12 miles, various loops. Moderate - Difficult. Take on the challenge of rugged, unsurfaced terrain. A trail pass, available at Park Headquarters, is required for bicyclists age 16 and older. Access at off-road parking lot on Highland Road or near the south terminus of Sunset Trail.

Minnehaha Trail (D-F) 0.7 mile, one way. Easy. This refreshing lakeshore trail links Nicolet South Campground and Eagle Trail. Access near campsite 844.

White Cedar Nature Trail 0.5 mile loop. Easy. Signs interpret deer ecology along an abandoned 5,000-year-old shoreline. Access at Nature Center.

Vita Course 1 mile loop. Eleven exercise stations wind through beautiful forest scenery. Stations develop strength, stamina and coordination for different ability levels. Access at the southwest corner of the amphitheater parking lot.

Trail Tramper’s Delight (K-L) 0.5 mile, one way. Easy. This trail name originated in the early 1920s when hikers walked from Nicolet Bay to Eagle Bluff Lighthouse. In the hot summer, the shaded path provided a cool walk, which was a trail tramper’s delight. Access near Eagle Bluff Lighthouse.

Sunset Bike Route (I-J-I) 10 miles. Moderate. The hard packed limestone base of the 5.1 mile route accomodates bicycles, wheelchairs and hikers. Traverse every major type of landscape including marshes, upland hardwoods and conifer stands. Connect to a return route at Nicolet Beach, pedaling four additional miles along Peninsula’s scenic back roads to Park Headquarters at the Fish Creek entrance. Be cautious of one steep descent on Middle Road.

TRAIL GUIDE • See safety messages on page four and five. Letters denote trail segments on map.

NEW! All features (roads, trails, shoreline) on the 2018 Peninsula State Park Summer Map reflect GPS coordinates. Mountain Bike Trails also now include mileage. Features on official park maps such as trails, roads, picnic areas and campgrounds depict “designated use areas” per 23.115 of Wis. statutes. Please limit your activities to these areas.

Camping with Fido? Surprising noises and strange smells pack every corner of a campground, especially for a dog. Sensory overload can cause even an easygoing hound act “ruff”. No wonder so many people realize it may be best to leave Fido at home. If you did bring a pawsitively awesome pooch (or kool kitty) camping, please follow these tips:

NO PETS ALLOWED PARK SHOWERS BUILDINGS NICOLET BEACH PICNIC AREAS WINTER SKI TRAILS NATURE TRAIL

Zelda, Christina, Kirby and Jason have been camping together for six years. They recommend a romp around the Skyline-Hemlock loop for its varied forest and bluff top view. Photo by Kathleen, Harris, DNR

• Current vaccinations, pet first aid kit (vet phone number, tweezers and

antiseptic), a travel tag attached to pet’s collar with camp site number. • Keep your pet on a leash no longer than eight-feet. A dog off-leash can pick up poison ivy oil on its fur. The dog does not react but if you pet its fur, you might. • Since pets are not allowed in showers or buildings, bring a bucket and towel to clean Fido at your campsite.

• Fetch your dog’s logs. Most doggy doo bags contain plastic and are

not biodegradable. Don’t leave poop packs along a trail or at your campsite. Instead, put them in the trash. • Please do not leave your dog alone at a campsite. Left alone, a dog may feel anxious or bored and bark non-stop. Remember, your pet may not interfere with the enjoyment of the park by others.

WHAT IS THE WISCONSIN STATE DOG? Stop at the Nature Center to tell us your answer and receive a dog treat!

FRIENDS OF PENINSULA STATE PARK (FPSP) Friends of Peninsula State Park is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to preserving the interpretive, natural, and recreational environment of the Park. We work collectively with our members, volunteers, and local businesses to financially support a variety of activities.

FRIENDS FUNDRAISING INITIATIVES This year, our priority is expansion of the Nature Center at Peninsula State Park. To effectively present educational programs and serve visitors in the future, there is a need to add a meeting room, indoor restrooms, and functional storage and program preparation space. The goal for this project is $450,000. Work is planned to begin this fall so the new Nature Center is ready for use by summer 2019.

Last year, we focused our efforts on raising funds for Eagle Tower. Almost $700,000 has been committed towards the goal of $750,000, and gifts continue to come in. The state of Wisconsin has pledged to match all individual gifts up to the goal, which will provide a total of $1.5 million towards the cost of a new tower.

Peninsula’s Scrappy Fighters Fishing at Peninsula U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

What makes Green Bay waters the most outstanding Smallmouth Bass fisheries in the Midwest? It’s the bedrock. Crayfish thrive in the cobblestone substrate. Bass feast on crayfish.

Use live bait rather than lures if you wish to hook a Walleye. The Walleye’s big glassy eye, designed for vision in dark water, earned it the nickname “Old Marble Eye.”

Yellow Perch are a favorite catch for winter anglers. Since this panfish eats almost anything, a simple handline with a hooked worm will do. Perch swim in schools, preferring deep, cool waters and sometimes weed beds. Great Lakes Whitefish is the species of choice for Door County fish boils. This reclusive species swims at depths of up to 200 feet.

Look southwest to see Horseshoe Island. Its natural harbor plunges to a depth of twenty-two feet. Pictured right is debris from an old Horseshoe Island dock. The underwater decking provides handy hiding places for fish and their quarry. Other prime fishing spots at Peninsula are the shallows near Weborg Point and the accessible fishing pier at Nicolet boat launch.

The park’s cobblestone shore began to form 450 million years ago when a tropical sea deposited limestone sediments. Anglers recognize the Smallmouth Bass by its russet eye and bronze-green The sediments hardened to color. This fish does not have a distinct lateral stripe like the Largemouth Bass. form dolostone bluffs called the Niagara Escarpment. Wave action weathered the bluffs, creating Peninsula’s eightmile gravel shore. Other fish pictured here thrive in deeper waters.

Peninsula’s interpretive team revised and are installing nine historical wayside signs, and are creating two new signs including the one pictured here. Look for the new fish sign on Skyline Road. Staff will install a new migratory bird sign just north of Nelsons’ Point.

Abundant resources attracted First Nations and later settlers to Door County. Commercial fishermen pose alongside a dock at Weborg Point in Peninsula State Park. Circa 1880s.
