History of STURGEON

BAY

The first Euro-American settlement in Door County was established in 1850 and developed along the waterfront into three sawmills, several stores and a tavern, with a population of 222 people by 1862. Sturgeon Bay became a stone quarrying center, with five quarries shipping limestone to Lake Michigan ports for harbor improvements. A canal linking Sturgeon Bay to Lake Michigan was completed in the 1880s after 20 years of construction. The canal provided a shortcut, eliminating the need for ships to travel through the dangerous Ports Des Morts (Death’s Door) Strait between the northern end of the peninsula and Washington Island. The new passage attracted thousands of ships. With burgeoning maritime traffic, Sturgeon Bay became a nucleus for shipbuilding on the Western Great Lakes, and continues the tradition today, building or servicing international commercial, military and luxury vessels. For more information on Sturgeon Bay history, please visit DoorCountyHistoricalMuseum.com, DoorCountyHistoricalSociety.com and DCMM.org.

Whether you’ve had these meals, snacks, or sweet treats before-when you visit Sturgeon Bay, your appetite better be ready. Dine like kings and queens at our eclectic restaurants. But before you go all out, here’s a list of food you must try while in Sturgeon Bay… Photo by Jon Jarosh/DCVB

APPLE DESSERTS

DOOR COUNTY SALADS

There are over 500 acres of apple orchards in Door County. Sturgeon Bay has several apple orchards/markets for you to get that fresh crunchy bite. Many restaurants in Sturgeon Bay incorporate the freshly picked apples in their dessert menus. Check SturgeonBay.net for local recipes.

Local ingredients are added to fresh greens to make a delightful hometown salad. Ingredients can range from the greens, to warm maple syrup in the dressing, dried cranberries, artisan cheeses and apples picked straight from the tree.

COINCIDENCE? WE THINK NOT… Is it a coincidence that Sturgeon Bay, Door County is home to the largest concentration of wineries in Wisconsin? We think not. Sturgeon Bay is located on the 44th north latitude, which is known as the world’s finest grape growing and wine-making regions. This latitude also includes regions such as Tuscany, Italy and Bordeaux, France. Even though our area endures winter conditions, we experience ideal seasonal growing climate, rainfall and length of daylight-great combinations for exquisite, local wine.
