From the Publisher’s desk, Who am I and why I am publishing a dating magazine.
Dear readers, My name is Marie Stuart and I live in Newton. I am a proud alumna from the class of 2005 of the University of Massachusetts- Dartmouth. I worked in the non profit sector full-time for four years while freelancing part-time as a fashion stylist. Apart from styling, one of my hobbies has always been matchmaking. I have matched countless friends with their boyfriends in the past, but it was during a routine appointment with a fashion client that I developed the idea of professional matchmaking. A recently divorced client, who received a makeover with my assistance, asked that I helped her get a date. I introduced her to a great man and soon began matching other clients as well. Working full time and styling part time gave me little time to focus on matchmaking, so by the end of summer 2008, I decided to put together a local dating magazine. Massachusetts' Singles Magazine (MSM), showcasing Massachusetts' eligible, is the first dating magazine dedicated solely to area singles. Monthly, MSM will feature: the column, confessions of a satyromaniac, lipstick corner, dating horoscopes, serving one, fashion sense, spotlight on area restaurants, featured singles and a few articles on sex, dating and relationships. In the near future, MSM will have several other features: questions & answers, business card special, event guide, and classifieds. We searched high and low for singles in Massachusetts for the first issue but I only choose 11 individuals to be featured. For upcoming issues, I am calling all singles in Massachusetts who feel that they are the most eligible to submit their profiles to be in MSM. It is my pleasure to bring you such publication as it is the first of its kind in this state. I hope that my publication will be here year after year for your viewing pleasure. I want to thank you for reading our first issue. I also want to thank all the people who contributed to make this issue possible. I dedicate this issue to God and my mother, Lourdes Bastien. Sincerely,
Marie Stuart Noel Publisher/ Founder of MSM Fashion Stylist Publisher@singlesmag.net 5
Dating Multiple People: Preferable or Unacceptable? By Riley Simpson Dinner with John on Tuesday. Movies with Mike on Thursday. Comedy show with John again on Saturday. Where do we draw the line? We have all heard the phrase “feast or famine” and it seems to be the theme of my life. I have found myself, on numerous occasions, completely single without even one prospect in mind. Then, without notice, the wind will blow and two or three boyfriend possibilities will at my front door, knocking. When we find ourselves in these situations, what is the best approach to take? Just a couple weeks ago, I found myself asking my best friend’s mother to set me up with a younger guy she raved about from her company. Pretty desperate, but I guess I was. I needed someone to entertain me for a little during a low tide. But somehow, within no time, the tide had turned. An ex came back in my life, putting more effort in than he ever did when we were dating. When he realized I was seeing someone else, it only fueled his fire to pursue me more. Now, I find myself juggling two people, wondering if and when this situation will turn from fun and innocent, to someone getting hurt. One thing I figured out is that honesty is a must when dating a few people at once. When Guy A asks what I am doing on Friday night, I let him know if I am going to be out with Guy B. When Guy B asks what I am doing Saturday night, I tell him if I will be with Guy A. I realized that with this tactic, I am creating jealous emotions, which often results in Guy A or B trying even harder to win me over. While I have figured out step one, I hate to say that the rest of the steps are pretty blurry to me. I wonder, which Guy is going to let have the benefits of dating, and which Guy is going to be left high and dry? Some may believe that dating a few people at once is human nature. As my friend would say, “Don’t stop dating around until a ring is on your finger.” But do people really follow that motto? Last year, I was seeing two guys at once, each knowing fully about the other. While Guy A was taking me to fun dates like a bull riding contest and a hockey game, Guy B was doing the traditional dinner here, movies there type of dating. While Guy A did make more of an effort, it was Guy B I fell for. I realized after a few weeks that it was Guy B that I was looking forward to seeing more, so I let Guy A off easy. Within a couple months of dating Guy B exclusively, he admitted he wasn’t ready for commitment. Did I choose the wrong guy? Definitely. Do I take it back? Not at all. When it comes to dating multiple people, I’ve realized that you have to just follow your heart. The truth is, if you really like someone enough, you shouldn’t want to be seeing anyone else. When you find yourself thinking about Guy A while out with Guy B or Guy C, you need to pay attention to that and go with your gut. While in the beginning, I think some competition is a good thing, it can only last for so long before things just get too messy. So ladies, date around, don’t settle for one when you can have a few. But be realistic with the consequences that are likely to happen, and follow your heart down whatever path it takes you. You can email Riley at riley.simpson@singlesmag.net 6

Bobby Carr talks sex, dating and relationships. Out with the old, try something new. When a city such as Boston offers an extremely diverse social scene, why are there more than 300,000 single adults living in the city alone? With that thought in mind I began to ask myself, where do we go to find our match when the city’s resources have run dry? I tend to hit up to the same social hotspots as other singles males in their late twenties, always running into the same people, exes, blow-off’s and one night stands. My nights usually begin with hopeful anticipation and end with intoxicated aggravation. I recently began to consider my options: continue to put myself in these awkward situations or leave my comfort zone, hoping to meet someone new. While I was weighing my options, a close friend was losing his game. Numerous dates with numerous women was becoming routine for Matt, and being a creature of habit, he took his new fling, Michelle, to his usual bar and used his usual slick lines. Matt had created a perfect first date, but had also created a situation we all try our hardest to avoid running into old dates while on a new one. Cocktails turned into trips to the restroom, and while running a comb through her blond hair, Michelle ran into two brunettes who happened to be Matt’s most recent flings. Shady breakup stories turned into a deal breaker and Michelle left Matt drunk and dry. As he glanced across the bar and saw two familiar faces, he began to wonder, was it ever going to be safe for him to frequent these parts again? As Michelle stormed out of the bar determined to not give into a womanizer she crossed the paths of two men, who both called out her name in unison. Michelle walked away without responding, realizing she never expected her one night stands to come back and haunt her, especially as friends with one another. Experiencing the Boston singles scene has shown me much the same. Too many past flings were affecting the formation of new relationships. I decided the best route was one that would take me to a place I hadn’t been before. Irge was new and hip and the risk of running into the same old people was minimal. Two hours and four coronas later, I was enjoying myself, especially after being approached by a hot prospect. As drinks flowed, so did the conversation and before I knew it, I had a number and a date. In the end, I realized that if we continue to complain about a lack of resources, yet refuse to try out new things, we are only setting ourselves up for familiar disappointment. Valentine’s Day blues? By Marie Stuart Noel Every year many people spend Valentine's Day alone. Some, it is by choice, while others wish they were not alone, yet again. If you are single right now, chances are, you will be single on Valentine's Day as well. Here are a few things you can do to make Valentine's Day blues into pink. 1– Women, call your girlfriends! Take a trip to a spa retreat and relax. Getting pampered is the best way to forget that you do not have a man. Get a massage, facial, the whole works, if you can afford it. Since we are in a recession; go to an area spa, get a manicure and a pedicure, which will not cost too much. Besides you deserve it. Gentlemen, go to a barber, and get the full work. 2– Women, if receiving flowers is very important to you, send yourself some. That way it might create a buzz around the office. Make sure that you place your flower order early to avoid paying too much. 3- Get a few of your single friends together and go somewhere nice for dinner. Remember, Valentine's Day weekend is a very busy time for restaurants, so make sure that you plan ahead and make reservations. Later, you can hit up a martini bar for drinks. Since Valentine's Day is on a Saturday this year, feel free to stay out later and drink a little more than usual. No work on Sundays, so enjoy yourself! 4– There are no rules that state that you cannot enjoy yourself alone on Valentine's Day so stay home, run yourself a warm bath and read a novel. Order in or better yet, make yourself a nice dinner and watch a movie. After all, Valentine's Day is just another day.
Publisher’s fashion guide: Use your wardrobe to land your next job. Having been a fashion stylist long before I thought of taking a leap into publishing, I feel that I must share some my fashion sense with you. Monthly, I will be bringing my fashion tips for men and women. This month, I am bringing some wardrobe essentials for both men and women that can help one look their best, both personally and professionally, when looking for jobs. Monthly, I will name a few area shops where you can purchase a few must-haves. Chances are either you or someone you know has recently lost a job due to this bad economy. The following lists contain items that can help you get your next job. They are always fashionable no matter what industry you are interviewing for. These pieces will come in handy, and the best part is you can wear the same pieces to every interview and still look fresh every time.
A stylish suit can add charm to your wardrobe. Italian suits are usually very stylish and classy. You can buy an Italian suit that makes you out stand out from the crowd for as low at $280 at Frank's Custom Tailoring on 58 Winter St. in Boston and get this, the alterations are included and done on premises.
Top essentials for the professional men
Top essentials for the professional women 1. A deconstructed nice suit: a must-have for not only interviews but also for funerals and other professional events. The pants and jacket can be worn separately. If the bottom is a skirt, make sure that the length is below the knee. 2. Pearl Earrings: if you wear jewelry, keep it at a minimum. Small faux pearl earrings make you look elegant and sophisticated. 3. Crisp dress shirt: the shirt can be any color as long as it is well pressed and clean. 4. Stockings: If you are wearing a skirt, leaving your legs bare is not a good idea. 5. Comfortable high-heeled shoes; yeah, I know what you are thinking; there is no such thing as comfortable high heels. Many area shoe stores specialize in comfortable shoes. First carries a large number of comfortable designer shoes at very low prices. They have three locations; the Natick Collection, the Braintree and Burlington malls . Right: Voorburg retro pump currently on sale at First for $49.99

1. A nice suit (Dark or Navy): a must-have for every man's closet. Having a deconstructed suit also is important for mixing and matching. 2. Solid colored tie: goes with almost any color suit so wear one when you can not decide between the clown bowtie and the holiday themed tie. 3. Crisp white dress shirt: a crisp white dress shirt will make you look clean and organized. 4. Belt (Black): going without a belt especially while wearing a suit is a big no-no. Not wearing a belt makes one look sloppy. 5. Dress socks (Black): believe it or not, I went to a wedding where someone wore white athletic socks with their tuxedo. You can never have too many socks, so always have some extra clean dress socks. And remember, your socks can match your trousers and not your shoes. 6. Dress shoes (Black): when a man approaches me for the first time, the first thing I notice are his shoes. Having clean dress shoes completes the professional look. Plus, most black dress shoes work with almost any suit.

Local places for you and your date on Valentine’s Day. We have compiled a few area suggestions for you to take your date on Valentine’s Day. Notice that you can go in or outside of the city of Boston to find a romantic place. The following places were picked randomly. Also remember, make your reservations early because waiting for a table on Valentine’s Day can take an eternity, literally.
North of Boston Exchange Street Bistro 67 Exchange Street Malden, MA 781-322-0071 www.exchangestreetbistro.com This Martini Bar in downtown Malden pleasantly surprised me. Alicia made a perfect Caramel Apple Martini and it was a delicious balance between sweet caramel and bitter apple. On my second visit, I tried the Pumpkin Martini; it was delicious! In the near future, the Exchange Street Bistro will be making room for some live music, supposedly the sounds of Jazz. This is a great place for a first date or to hang out with your single friends.

Introduction to a Satyromaniac By Phi
I am sure that many of you are wondering what the hell a satyromaniac is? Plain and simple, a satyromaniac is the male equivalent of a nymphomaniac. Now, some of you may say (and rightfully so) that you too are satyromaniacs. Well that just might be, but you're not writing the column, so just read on. Now what makes me a satyromaniac? Well, I have a constant and unquenchable urge to have sex, anytime, anywhere. You know that itch on your back you can't quite reach and it bothers you like crazy because you're scratching and scratching but it always seems to move and you can't quite get it? Sort of like that. But it's not just sex in and of itself. Sex does not satiate anything. On a good day, I can get off in an hour or so, on a bad day, never. In fact, I have only gotten off with 30% of the partners that I've had. Try as they might, I just can't finish, so I'm stuck there with a giant throbbing muscle on my lap, waiting for it to subside. And in the off chance I do get to release my unborn children, my body goes right back up for another go within 10 minutes. It's like a punching bag. No matter how hard you hit it, how hard you try to push it away, thinking this time you'll finally be done, it comes back even stronger.

Thus, I am on the perpetual quest to help find someone to help me with this problem. The majority of these stories take place during my four year stint as a "student" at Umass Amherst. I say "student" because you can only be so academic at a school whose hobbies are drink, drink, drink and have sex. Since I was a high school senior, I told myself that college is a time for fun. These four years are theholy grail of existence in which I will be as above the law as I can get without being in a movie and be around people my age. In this mini-city of 24,000 college students (over half of whom were girls according to Princeton review); someone out there was bound to be able to keep up with me. And if not, at least I'll have a good story to tell. And good stories I do have. In the coming months, I will regale you stories about my quest to sate my constant lust, which has led to some of the most amusing, confusing, disgusting, disheartening and erotic experiences of my life. Getting someone's attention sometimes calls for outrageous tactics. Dress in a sexier outfit, or make a grand gesture that won't be easily forgotten. When you take drastic measures to ask someone on a date, they appreciate the effort.
LEO July 23-August 22
A friend could use your compassion and warmth today. Take them out to dinner to cheer them up, or at minimum offer to listen to their problems. Sometimes all it takes to turn a gloomy situation around is a nonjudgmental audience of one.

AQUARIUS January 20-February 18
Give into your impulses today. Flirt with abandon and let your heart call the shots. Sometimes it feels freeing to give your responsible side a short vacation. Being in control all the time is overrated.
PISCES February 19-March 20
Strive for more sleep right now -- eight hours if possible. Your healthy sexual appetite calls for rest. Being perpetually exhausted will negatively affect your performance, so take a nap. Relax and you'll receive a standing ovation. Time for an encore?
VIRGO August 23-September 22
Instead of going with a sure thing, why not take a risk on someone who isn't totally safe? Try dating the underdog. It's exciting to give a diamond in the rough a chance to shine!
LIBRA September 23-October 22
Think of the bigger picture today when it comes to your quest for true love. Just because things don't work out with one person, that doesn't mean you're doomed to a life of dating disasters. Everybody is different in how they love and live. Go on to the next person until you find the one for you.
SCORPIO ARIES March 21-April 19
Be bold today when making decisions. Your daring behavior excites the one person you want to attract. Let your prowess set you apart from the rest of the gang. It takes true grit to make a move.
October 23 - November 21
Lately you've been stressed about everything from work to the current state of affairs. Now is the best time to take a look at the things worthy of your worrying. Work on only the things that you can change, and leave the rest up to fate.
SAGITTARIUS TAURUS April 20-May 20
Don't be pompous when you offer to help someone with a relationship problem. No one likes to feel incompetent when it comes to love. You may be experienced but you're not the Love Doctor. Be a pal, not pretentious chump.
GEMINI May 21-June 21
November 22-December 21
Do you need to address a delicate situation at work or with your mate? Now is the best time to do just that, as you are almost certainly working with a full toolbox of communication gear.
CAPRICORN December 22-January 19
You need to accept the status quo today, even if it feels a bit unfair to you. Things are what they are today, but you can at least file away your grievance for later, when you can do something about it.
It can be fun debating current events with someone new. Use this opportunity to flirt instead of to alienate your new conquest. There are more important things than being right -- like being kissed! -Horoscopes provided by astrology.com. 19
