MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

Workforce development important to our economy

While the national recession in the last decade didn’t affect South Dakota or Sioux Falls as negatively as other parts of the country, workforce and the importance of its development to our continued economic growth is still a hot topic here. Sioux Falls is fortunate to have a deep bench of all types of industries that strengthen our economy in good times and not so good times. The security of a diverse economy can only reinforce the importance of maintaining our excellent business climate. No one has developed a model solution that will work in every community to create new jobs and ensure great benefits for employees. But we can continue to strive for more opportunities for workers of all skill sets. Workforce development has been a major area of emphasis in several of our Forward Sioux Falls programs,

CVB sales team to blitz Chicago area The CVB Sales Team will travel to Chicago July 13-18 to conduct their second geo-targeted sales blitz of 2014. The team is prospecting organization and association meeting planners located in the Chicago area to set up a meetings to discuss Sioux Falls and future event hosting opportunities. The CVB has targeted the Chicago area in the past, most recently at DMAI Destinations Chicago in 2013, but hasn’t sales blitzed the area since 2012. The sales team is looking forward to hitting the market again this year. Chicago was selected as the second location for a 2014 sales blitz due to its high quantity of medical meeting profes-

sionals. Chicago is known as the headquarter location for medical associations in the continental U.S. and the second location, next to Washington, D.C., for overall national association headquarters. Some of the success in securing national pieces of business relies on local connections. Local support and involvement with a national or international organization or association gives the destination credibility and integrity in the bidding process. Contact a member of the CVB sales team if you are connected to any national organizations or associations: (605) 275-6060.

Captain Mark Kelly speaks at Visitor Industry Luncheon The Sioux Falls Convention & Visitors Bureau hosted its annual Visitor Industry Luncheon on May 13, 2014 at the Sioux Falls Convention Center. Nearly 700 people were in attendance to celebrate National Tourism Week, the Sioux Falls Visitor Industry and to hear Captain Mark Kelly speak. Kelly spoke about what dedication and perseverance have brought to his life. He touched on becoming a pilot and astro-

naut and the rehabilitation his wife, former U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords, received after being shot in 2011. Kelly received a standing ovation and exceptionally positive comments on his uplifting speech. Each year the luncheon recognizes individuals in the community who have made an impact to tourism. CVB launches concert contest The Sioux Falls Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) recently launched an online and social media campaign to promote Sioux Falls and the first concerts to be held at the new Denny Sanford PREMIER Center. The promotion started May 30 and will run through Aug. 31, 2014. Potential visitors are being targeted in a 250-mile radius around Sioux Falls. Demographic behaviors include the likelihood of traveling for a concert and social activity on YouTube. Other targeted factors such as age, interests and household income will be determined by the final performers to be included in the promotion. Advertising supporting the promotion includes Google display, Facebook, Twitter, remarketing, YouTube and direct e-blasts. The primary creative message directs potential visitors to the unique landing page VisitSiouxFalls.com/PremierEvents, where they have the chance to enter to win a VIP travel package to Sioux Falls that is redeemable on the specific concert date between September-December 2014.

The Sioux Falls Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) will host a number of travel writers in Sioux Falls over the next few months. Writers are on assignment from various publications such as National Public Radio, AAA Home and Away, Autoroute 4x4, TravelingMom.com and other travel blogs.

ed to Sioux Falls travel packages. Participants will be encouraged to share the video. One winner for each package will be randomly selected from a pool of entries based upon the total reach of the video on YouTube. Participants can enter once for each package, but can win only one package. Each package will consist of four concert tickets, $80 food and beverage voucher at the event, suite hotel accommodations for four, breakfast and transportation where applicable.

CVB teams up with New Technology High School to create new Falls Park brochure

Students were split into teams and introduced to the project with a scavenger hunt at Falls Park. The visit to the park allowed a hands-on learning experience and the ability to develop their concept through the eye of a visitor. Discovery about the history, buildings, sculptures, events and more helped show what should be included to

They each received a $25 gift certificate to the Falls Park Visitors Information Center, tickets to the Kirby Science Discovery Center and Visual Arts Center at the Washington Pavilion and tickets to a Sioux Falls Canaries baseball game.

CVB to greet visitors at interstate rest stops The Sioux Falls Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) and several local hospitality partners will greet visitors at the Valley Springs Information Center and Rest Stop along Interstate 90 on Friday, July 18, and Friday, Aug. 1, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. This year visitors will also be greeted at the Vermillion Information Center and Rest Stop along Interstate 29, on Friday, July 25 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

This event allows the local hospitality industry an opportunity to draw visitors off the interstate to promote the community’s attractions, restaurants and hotels, informing passersby why Sioux Falls is the best place to stop. The CVB will distribute Sioux Falls visitor guides, visitor maps and Falls Park brochures.

cutting; see details in the sidebar.

Prior to the Festival of Bands’ official start, which will be in its 27th year this fall, Ordal remembers the Chamber’s Retail Committee Chair holding the event in the Empire Mall parking lot. A few years later, the event was moved to Howard Wood Field and the parade was held downtown.

Ordal credits encouragement from her mother, Marcella, to apply for a job at the then Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce in 1966. Ordal thought working for the Chamber would be fun and exciting, based on watching the weekly KSOO Television As part of the Chamber’s Retail Comprogram that featured host Sylvia Henkin with Chamber Executive Vice President mittee promotions, a car was to be given away. One of Ordal’s jobs was to pick up the Gordon Olson. ballots and restock the ballot box for when

the car was moved to the next location. The Chamber-sponsored Sioux Empire Farm Show has been held for 61 years and Ordal spent time assisting with the event as part of her job. She remembered the 1969 event as a terribly cold and snowy winter. The Chair of the Farm Show, the late Henry Quinn, was a state legislator and in Pierre during the event. “He would call me every morning at 6 a.m. and we’d determine if there would be a show and a sale,” she recalled. “I would let him know that somehow the exhibitors made it and they were ready to go forward with the show and sale.” Ordal remembers staff working lots of hours during Farm Show weeks. But the culture at the Chamber of Commerce was to work until the job was done. When the Chamber staff worked on proposals to solicit new airline routes to Sioux Falls, Ordal remembers papers that needed to be postmarked by midnight — and that the staff would be working on the proposal up until midnight.

Sioux Falls hosted the NAIA men’s national track and field championships from 1959-67. The Chamber assisted with the event and in 1967, Ordal had to fill in for the regular staff member. She remembers the need to be accurate with the exact times and distances of the athletes and getting press releases put together on a ditto machine. “I was so nervous. I just remember volunteers (of the Chamber’s Sports and Recreation Committee) saying, ‘We know you can do it, Betty,’” she said. In her 48 years, Ordal has seen many milestones in the community, including the Chamber’s Women’s Division, which she managed when it started in 1971. Though it was later incorporated into other Chamber activities, the Women’s Division served as a stepping stone to get more women involved in the Chamber of Commerce; Ordal worked with several female community leaders over the years, including the first woman on the Board of Directors (Florence Holton) and the first woman to serve as Chair of the Board (Sylvia Henkin).

From the encouragement of her mother to “just go for it,” Ordal has also inspired and lifted up other women she’s mentored over the years — both on the Chamber staff and Chamber volunteers. This spring Ordal was recognized for her impact on women in the community. She was honored at the EmBe annual Tribute to Women in the Nonprofit and Human Services category. She also received the Women Working Through the Decades award from Sales and Marketing Executives (SME). Membership Service Manager Pat Lund has worked with Ordal for 25 years. “I’m not sure what we’ll do when Betty isn’t down the hall to answer a member’s question about something that happened 30 years ago or even the difference between the barrow and gilt sale at the Chambersponsored Farm Show,” Lund said. “I know that our community is truly a better place thanks to the big efforts of a small town girl who made a difference for everyone.” Every day at the Chamber is different, Ordal said. And yes, there are a lot of meetings. The variety of work is part of the rea-

ideas from other communities. Some ideas Ordal “stole” through connecting with other chambers of commerce are still around today. The idea of a Membership Mixer, which started in Sioux Falls in the 1970s, was also borrowed from another Chamber. As Ordal tells the story, one Board Member was sure the idea wouldn’t take off in Sioux Falls. After the first Mixer at the Holiday Inn City Centre was a rousing success, he came to the next Board meeting and presented the Chamber with $100 to go toward sponsoring the next Mixer. Today these events average more than 260 people with the next hosting opportunity available in 2017.

Her commitment to the Chamber industry has stood the test of time. Ordal regularly takes calls from Chamber peers across the country asking for guidance and advice in growing their membership or working with volunteer leadership. Ordal served on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Membership Development (NAMD, now part of ACCE — American Chamber of Commerce Executives) for three years. She intends to continue to travel and has a fall trip planned to Italy as well as some road trips to Michigan to spend time with her granddaughter’s family. Ordal said the changes that have taken place in the industry have been exciting and beneficial — the Chamber got rid of the addressograph long ago and utilizes newer technology to communicate with members. However, she hopes some things don’t change after her departure, like development of community leaders through programs like Leadership Sioux Falls and strong leadership at the staff and volunteer levels. “For me, it’s been the variety of the work,” Ordal said. “I’d look at other jobs and ask, ‘Why would I leave?’ It’s been challenging, educational and rewarding because we’re doing something for the future.”

NEWS

Chamber members recognized during South Dakota Small Business Week The South Dakota District of the U.S. Small Business Administration recognized three Chamber members as part of South Dakota Small Business Week. In conjunction with SCORE and the SBA, award winners Mid-State Utility Trailer Sales, Click Rain, and Mark Slade, Sioux Falls Small Business Development Center will be honored at a celebration on June 5. Mid-State Utility Trailer Sales Inc., is the 2014 Family-Owned Small Business of the Year. The company is a full-service truck trailer dealership selling new utility truck trailers and used trailers, performs repair services and sells parts for truck trailers. They maintain full service shops and sales offices in Omaha, Sioux City and Sioux Falls in addition to a sales office in Grand Island, a service shop in LeMars and a sales and mobile service in Des Moines. Mid-State Utility Trailer Sales is an entity of Keizer Company, which started in 1976 by James Keizer. Daughter Stacey Bricker and son Shane Keizer have been involved with Keizer Companies since 1993 and in 2004, began transitioning into ownership at minority levels. After James’ unexpected death in 2012, Mid-States Utility Trailer was transferred to Bricker and Keizer. Throughout the years, the family has increased employment opportunities for family members and non-family members. In 2009, with the assistance of Dakota BUSINESS Finance, land was purchased and a new 27,000-plus sq.ft. facility was constructed in Sioux Falls. With this expansion, 11 full-time employees were added. The 2014 Young Entrepreneur of the Year award was given to Paul Ten Haken, Click Rain. Click Rain, which was started in 2008 by Ten Haken, provides online marketing and web development services to large international companies, local businesses — and everything in between. The company has grown from one-person to a staff of 20-plus designers, online marketers, developers and account staff. Click Rain has achieved this incredible growth while maintaining a culture of work-life balance, quality products and services, and a fun atmosphere. Ten Haken hasn’t been far from the spotlight in the past six years, often called by the local media to share insight on digital and current

events. Google, the BBC, Tumir, Entrepreneur Magazine and the Sioux Falls Business Journal has also recognized Ten Haken and Click Rain for work in the digital marketing industry. In 2013, Ten Haken was selected as a member of the Google Glass Explorers Program and shares this technology with others whenever he can. Selected as the 2014 Financial Services Advocate of the Year, Mark Slade has been with the South Dakota Small Business Development Center since early 1998, serving as both the Sioux Falls Regional Director and the Associate State Director. Applying his background in small business and finance to the benefit of South Dakota’s entrepreneurs, Slade works with approximately 200 start-ups and existing businesses per year in fields from retail and service to manufacturing and professional/ technical services. Successful client projects have ranged in size from individual proprietorships to $12 million projects and 100-plus job expansions. The economic impact of the projects he has seen successfully launched since 1998 topped nearly $250 billion. Slade holds an MBA from the University of South Dakota along with an Economic Development Finance Professional Certification (EDFP). Also recognized at the Small Business Week Celebration was Anne Hullinger, Internal Revenue Services, Sioux Falls as the 2014 Small Business Advocate of the Year. A Federal employee for 30 years, Hullinger has served with the General Services Administration and Social Security Administration in Illinois, Montana and South Dakota. She has held her current position, IRS Stakeholder Liaison for South Dakota, Montana and Iowa, for the past 12 years. In this capacity, Hullinger works with both tax preparers and organizations that assist small businesses, such as the Small Business Development Center, SCORE and Chambers of Commerce. She shares tax information and updates with her partners, and works to solve issues involving IRS systems, policies and procedures. Hullinger has also instructed classes for 24 years and recently wrote an IRS webinar on depreciation basics for small businesses.
