MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
Chamber, other organizations, help Sioux Falls raise the bar I see a sense of optimism and confidence in our community. Our city is on track to set another record year in construction permits. Our weekends — and weeknights — are full of activities and events for visitors and residents alike. There’s never been a better time to live and work in the Sioux Falls area.
DANA DYKHOUSE 2014-15 Chair of the Board
... it’s a lot of smaller things added together that have a positive impact on our community’s progress.
One of the reasons Sioux Falls continues to host great events and attract more residents and business expansions is that we don’t rest. Your Chamber of Commerce, along with other government and community organizations, continues to raise the bar on our expectations and then backs it up with our accomplishments. It’s not just any one thing that makes this happen — it’s a lot of smaller things added together that have a positive impact on our community’s progress. One example is our Young Professionals Network — a key initiative in our Chamber’s Leadership Development efforts. This group has grown to more than 1,000 members and will host its third Crossroads Summit one-day conference this month. I invite you to attend the Crossroads Summit on Aug. 20 — it may be hosted by YPN but is open to all. The lineup of keynote speakers and breakout sessions is top-notch. Your Chamber is proud to organize this affordable event that provides great networking opportunities and speakers who provide personal and professional development. Last month’s issue featured our successful Leadership Sioux Falls program as it’s on the cusp of its 30th year. This is an important leadership development program in our community and one of my favorite programs that the Chamber puts on. Applications for the 30th class are due this month, so please be sure to meet the Aug. 14 deadline if you’re interested in participating. We talk a lot about our advocacy efforts at the local and state levels, but we also focus on federal issues, too. During the next 30 days, we’ll host South Dakota’s Congressional delegation as part of our Inside Washington series. This is an informative opportunity for you as members to hear first-hand from our elected officials at the federal level. You can read more about our federal advocacy efforts on pages 30-31.
Our Convention & Visitors Bureau continues to be busy traveling to trade shows and conventions promoting the city and its amenities. They have booked a number of new events with more to be announced. This Labor Day weekend our city will host the Sioux Falls GreatLIFE Challenge at Willow Run — a part of the 2015 Symetra Tour Road to the LPGA. There are a number of great volunteer opportunities and chances to see top-notch golf. Enjoy the rest of your summer and know that your Chamber continues to work for progress in all areas of our community.

With the help of sponsor Touchstone Energy and hundreds of area businesses who also provide volunteers, approximately 5,000 area farmers are treated to a pork loin lunch, entertainment and complimentary gate entrance to the fair. Work remains in the auditorium area, including restoration of the walls, ceiling and stage. Sound and lighting equipment also need to be installed. Part of the steering committee’s job
will be to explore ways to raise money for this final phase. The new panel plans to make its recommendations before the end of 2015. Its report will focus on the needs and costs of the final stage of the historic restoration project. A PROGRAM OF THE SIOUX FALLS AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
Crossroads Summit provides development opportunities for all ages BY AMY SMOLIK
Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce
The third Crossroads Summit will be held Thursday, Aug. 20 — a one-day conference designed to allow networking, learning and sharing with young professionals and business and community leaders from across Sioux Falls. It’s sponsored by the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals Network and will be held at the Sioux Falls Convention Center. In its seven years of existence, the Chamber’s Young Professionals Network has grown to more than 1,000 members and developed this solid personal and professional development conference that is held every other year. The event co-chairs are Marty DesLauriers, UBS, and Amy DesLauriers, Lawrence & Schiller. For more about the DesLauriers’, see the Five Questions segment on pages 52-53. While the Summit is hosted and organized by the YPN, it is open to everyone in the community to attend. It features two keynote speakers at breakfast and lunch and several 24 Chamber News | AUGUST 2015
breakout sessions covering a wide array of topics. Many topics may appeal to younger professionals but the conference is designed to allow everyone to take away something by attending. Seating is limited, and spots are filling up fast. Registration is available at siouxfallsypn.com/summit2015. “I think it’s a great event that provides motivation and inspiration to all levels of an organization,” said Wendy Alexander, Home Federal Bank. “We have had our young professionals attend in the past, as well as some of our more seasoned professionals. It’s just a great event with many great nuggets of information to learn about or even be reminded of.” There are also options to attend only the breakfast and luncheon keynotes. The breakfast keynote speaker is Jason Schechterle, a former Phoenix Police Officer whose life was forever changed when he was trapped inside his police car while it burned. His story is one of life, rebirth and

transformation. The luncheon keynote is Ken Schmidt, a former director of communications strategy for HarleyDavidson Motor Company. Schmidt played an active role in one of the most celebrated turn-arounds in corporate history and got paid to ride motorcycles. Registration is already on track to top the 2013 event, with many attendees coming back. The event features a good mixture of inspirational speakers and breakout sessions, said Tara Twedt, Architecture Incorporated. “There are multiple options to choose from that meet most everyone’s areas of interest,” Twedt said. “I would encourage others to attend, and I’m excited to go again myself.” Previous Summit attendee Chris Filsinger, CorTrust Bank, said he was energized after attending the event two years ago. “From learning about the importance of having a mentor within your career, to learning about how to protect my family through estate planning, there were so many great things I took away from the Crossroads Summit. It was also a great opportunity to visit with other young professionals in the Sioux Falls area. I can’t think of many other opportunities when you get a chance to be in a room with so many other like-minded individuals,” Filsinger said. “I chose to sign up again for the simple fact that the Crossroads Summit provides a tremendous value for my investment. What I will ultimately get out of the day will be exponentially higher than the cost to attend. That in itself makes the decision a no brainer. If you want to become more valuable to the company you work for, the business you own, or the community you live in, the Crossroads Summit is a great way to do so. Not to mention, it’s a great opportunity to get out of the office for a day!” More than 20 breakout sessions are being offered, with
topics ranging from civic engagement to financial planning to how to unblock your creative mind. Dan Menke, Pride Neon, said he enjoyed the breakout sessions at the 2013 event. “There was such a wide variety of topics, I had a hard time narrowing down which ones to attend. All of them were very informative and I took a lot out of them,” he said. “The Crossroads Summit offers a great opportunity for me to meet people and hear speakers that I probably wouldn’t come across on a normal day. From the breakfast keynote, breakout sessions, to the lunch keynote, you’re bound to take something away that will ultimately make you a better leader. Community service is also a cornerstone of the Crossroads Summit. Attendees can hear from community leaders about ways to get more engaged. They can also support The Banquet by bringing school supplies as part of the annual S.O.S. drive — Supply Our Students. The Banquet is the only agency that provides school supplies for students in need. The biggest push for supplies comes before the start of the school year. See the box on page 29 for more information about what supplies are needed. The Crossroads Summit is made possible because of support from the Sioux Falls area business community. Gold sponsors are Argus Leader Media; CorTrust Bank; and Northwestern Mutual. Silver sponsors are Avera; The First National Bank in Sioux Falls; First PREMIER Bank/ PREMIER Bankcard; KELO Television; Sanford Health; and SDN Communications. Bronze sponsors are: Beck & Hofer Construction; CenturyLink; Citi; CNA Surety; Cutler Law Firm; Davenport Evans Hurwitz & Smith; DocuTAP; Dorsey & Whitney Trust Company, LLC; Eide Bailly LLP; Great Western Bank; Home Federal Bank; Journey Group; Meta Payment Systems; Midcontinent Communications; Novak chambernews.com | Chamber News 25

Sanitary Services; Pride Neon; Raven Industries; U.S. Bank; and Woods, Fuller, Schultz & Smith PC. “It makes me feel good as a young professional to know that the company I work for is willing to invest and show its commitment to the young professionals in the community,” Filsinger said. “Just like any small business, the continued success of CorTrust is dependent upon the growth and strength of the communities we serve. I think CorTrust’s sponsorship of the Crossroads Summit shows that the bank understands the important role young professionals will play in the future success of the community, and it’s great to be a part of that. For those who are interested in networking, there will be opportunities throughout the day. A Launch Party sponsored by Argus Leader Media the night before will officially kick off activities. It will be held from 4-7 p.m. at the Sioux Falls Convention Center.

RETIRED PHOENIX POLICE OFFICER
FORMER DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS STRATEGY FOR HARLEY-DAVIDSON MOTOR COMPANY
Jason Schechterle
Sponsored by Cortrust Bank Jason Schechterle had one dream — to serve as a Phoenix police officer. After serving four years in the Air Force, he achieved his goal to work on the streets of Phoenix as a rookie police officer at the age of 26. Only 14 months into what was supposed to be a life-long career, his life took an unexpected, dramatic and, at the time, tragic turn. In March 2001, a taxicab crashed into the rear of Schechterle’s patrol car. Upon impact, his car burst into flames, trapping him inside with temperatures reaching more than 700 degrees. Through a series of miraculous and fateful circumstances, Schechterle survived the crash. He suffered severe burns to more than 40 percent of his body, which drastically altered his appearance. He has undergone more than 50 surgeries just to have the ability to accomplish simple daily tasks the rest of us often take for granted. Schechterle’s journey chronicles his fight for life, his triumph over tragedy and the inspiration that enables him to continue to overcome unimaginable adversity. His personal narrative exemplifies how the power of the human spirit can never be underestimated or extinguished. His story is one of life, rebirth and transformation.

Ken Schmidt
Sponsored by Northwestern Mutual Longtime motorcycle enthusiast Ken Schmidt’s formal association with Harley-Davidson began in 1985. As a specialist in corporate positioning and media relations, Schmidt was asked to work with the then-struggling company to help restore its image and create demand for its motorcycles. Within a few short years, Harley-Davidson became one of the most visible and frequently reported-on companies in the world, while sales of its motorcycles rocketed upward. Schmidt became director of Harley-Davidson’s corporate and financial communications and served as its primary spokesperson to the media and the financial communities. Now, he’s a frequent speaker to business groups and academic communities throughout the world. “I love to startle people by exposing them to proven ideas and concepts they’ve never imagined,” he said. “Whether I’m talking about how perfectly average people can do extraordinary things or how to build an entirely new corporate culture, rekindle relationships with customers, or reach out to new ones in completely untraditional ways, I’m teaching people to throw conventional approaches out the window.”

BUSINESS ADVOCACY
Growing a federal advocacy program The Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce has a long history of effective advocacy with local and state governments due to well-developed programs and processes highlighting this work. Local governmental officials and meetings are easily accessed and we have the ability to influence decision-making. Our detailed platform development process for state government prepares for boots-on-the-ground advocacy during the annual legislative session as well as staying engaged during the interim as issues emerge.
MARK LEE
Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce
... what happens in Washington, D.C., though often frustratingly slow, matters to Sioux Falls and to South Dakota.
In addition, we’ve enjoyed great relationships with our federal congressional delegation over the years and have successfully engaged in federal issues as they crop-up. Our Inside Washington events are an example of how we engage with and hear from our delegation. But, over the last year or so, we have begun efforts to build a program to more consistently engage in federal issues. Why? Because what happens in Washington, D.C., though often frustratingly slow, matters to Sioux Falls and to South Dakota. And, as our state’s largest community, we are uniquely positioned to effectively work with federal officials and departments to communicate our position on federal issues. There are things we have done specifically as we began the process of improving this area: Helped found and became a charter member of the Mid-America Chamber Executives (MACE) Advocacy Alliance. Chamber President/CEO Evan Nolte serves as the chair of this new group that is developing a regional interstate approach to advocacy amongst the six upper Midwest states in MACE. The Alliance’s work is not exclusively dedicated to federal issues, but clearly federal issues are in the mix. The next Advocacy Alliance issues conference is this fall in Minneapolis. Addressed specific legislative and process issues with our congressional delegation to communicate our position on issues. Some examples: • We advocated for a speedier process to redraw the floodplain map that will free up more land to development. • We consistently advocate for passage of marketplace fairness legislation to level the playing field for main street business with large Internet retailers to ensure the collection of sales tax for our state and communities. • We made our Chamber’s position very clear on important Trade Promotion Authority legislation. It is now passed and in law. We firmly believe opening up more options for trade partnerships will benefit our state and nation. • We communicated the importance of supporting the TransCanada Keystone Pipeline as a safe and economical way to move oil. Keystone XL would have a significant impact upon our economy with an estimated 1,700 direct jobs and 1,800 indirect and induced jobs to our state. In addition, Keystone XL would generate an estimated $46.5 million in support of state government in the form of sales, use and contractors’ excise taxes. Property tax revenues are also estimated to rise by $18-$20 million. Identified issues on the horizon that we are paying close attention to as well. They include: • The Air National Guard in Sioux Falls is an F-16 fighter wing. Our advocacy position will be to keep a strong air guard in Sioux Falls and position us for an F-35 mission as those decisions are made in the near future. • We all know the impact of EROS Data Center to our area. We will continue to learn more about their mission and seek to grow their program as we are able. What we are finding is that the more we engage our federal elected officials, the more they seek engagement from us. We know that does not mean we will always agree, but it is important for our delegation to know where the Sioux Falls Chamber stands on important federal issues.

BUSINESS ADVOCACY
Besides those issues listed above, there are other federal issues that we are studying. One is the Waters of the United States (WOTUS), which seeks to, among other things, gather more waters under the jurisdiction of the EPA and the Army Corps of Engineers to protect them from pollution. It would likely include all seasonal flow waters and even things like ditches and temporary water holding areas. Agricultural, mining, construction and pipeline interests believe this will be a very costly new set of regulations and restrictions. Another is the recently announced Department of Labor regulatory change proposal to overtime eligibility. First, this would set the overtime eligibility wage at about $970 per week. In other words, anyone making less than $970 per week would be eligible for overtime. The current rate is $455 per week. In addition, the DOL proposes to modify the “duties test” for overtime eligibility, but has yet to provide any specifics as to what the modifications would be and are asking for input. The proposed rule change was posted to the Federal Register on July 6 and comments are due before Sept. 4, though some organizations are seeking a longer comment period. As we continue our work with MACE and expand our efforts to communicate with our federal delegation, we will look for new ways to impact the process and engage in federal issues. While this area may not reach the level of sophistication and commitment as some of our other lobbying efforts, we believe it is important and believe expanded efforts by the Sioux Falls Area Chamber can work to the benefit of our region and state. Mark Lee is the Public Affairs & Communications Director for the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce. He also serves as the full-time lobbyist for the Chamber and Forward Sioux Falls during South Dakota’s legislative session.

International Trade Center serves businesses by providing education
ROCK NELSON
South Dakota International Trade Center
The ITC’s purpose is to create more economic impact statewide including Sioux Falls ... by promoting and facilitating more international trade of its products.
South Dakota’s International Trade Center (ITC) hosts foreign and domestic dignitaries, serves as an advocate of international trade, provides networking among its clients, serves as a resource center, provides a periodic electronic newsletter and news alerts to its clients and provides and moderates its nationally known international trade seminars/ workshops. An average of 70 businesses attend each of these live sessions and an average of 60 businesses and/or individuals attend each of these same live-streamed events. The ITC’s purpose is to create more economic impact statewide including Sioux Falls and its surrounding regions by promoting and facilitating more international trade of its products —manufactured, agricultural, value-added, services, etc., all of which are sold to foreign buyers because they like our high-quality, American-made products. This is “outside” money coming into our economy — which serves to create more jobs. These jobs create more salaries and these salaries are spent within and serve to strengthen our local, state and regional economies.
INTERNATIONAL TRADE CENTER WORKSHOP Thursday, Aug. 27 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. University Center, Avera Hall 4801 N. Career Ave. “Incoterms 2010” & “Currencies — Taking Control and Getting the Edge on Your Competitors: Exchange, Hedging, Budget and Sales Strategies in Foreign Countries” Attend the entire event for $130, which includes lunch. Or attend either the morning session or afternoon session for $75. You can also attend the webinar for $55 for either the morning or afternoon session. Contact Rock Nelson for more information: rock@siouxfalls. com or (605) 941-6696.
On Aug. 27, the ITC will hold its 27th workshop/seminar. The morning presenter is Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada’s Jeff Boyko, who will speak on “Currencies — Taking Control and Getting the Edge on Your Competition.” Boyko will discuss foreign currency exchange, hedging, budget and sales strategies in foreign countries. Laura Pedersen, Global Banking Specialist at 1st National Bank of Omaha, will conduct our afternoon program entitled “International Trade Terms — Incoterms 2010.” Nationally-known speakers from throughout the country present at the University Center’s state-of-the-art Avera Hall and their programs are live-streamed nationwide and into Canada, thus enabling the ITC’s audiences to gain further in-depth knowledge from the pros concerning U.S. government and foreign rules, documentation, regulations and compliance which allow them to remain legal and more efficient in today’s ever-changing world of international trade. My goal is to continue to provide our office’s clients — from the very smallest up to the very biggest — with excellent service and the correct answers and solutions to their international trade questions and problems, such as compliance, logistics, documentation, rules/regulations, freight quotes, insurance, etc. as quickly as possible. In short, I’m “the guy in the trenches” serving our clients. The ITC office is located in the U.S. Customs Building at the north end of the Sioux Falls Regional Airport. Rock Nelson is the Director of South Dakota’s International Trade Center (ITC). For the last 16 years, he’s worked with South Dakota and tri-state businesses that conduct international trade — exporting and importing. His office’s free services are funded by the Sioux Falls Development Foundation, Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce, South Dakota Small Business Development Center, Governor’s Office of Economic Development and SBA. For more information, contact Nelson at (605) 941-6696 or rock@siouxfalls.com.

MIND YOUR SMALL BUSINESS
Summer reminders from the IRS With summer in full swing, the Internal Revenue Services and Social Security Administration offer a few “summer” reminders.
SAFEGUARD YOUR TAX RECORDS AGAINST NATURAL DISASTERS Natural disasters such as tornadoes and floods can come without warning and leaving you with little time to prepare. It’s important to keep your tax records safe by taking a few simple steps: • Create an additional set of electronic records. Keep a duplicate set of records including bank statements, tax returns, identifications and insurance policies in a safe place and away from the original set. This is made easier now that many banks provide statements and documents electronically, but even if original records are only provided on paper, these can be scanned into an electronic format. • Document valuables. Photograph or videotape the contents of your office and home, especially items of higher value. The IRS Publication 584, Casualty, Disaster and Theft Loss, can help compile a list of belongings. A photographic record can help prove the fair market value for items for insurance and casualty loss. • Update emergency plans. Personal and business situations change over time as do preparedness needs. Be sure to update your plan when you hire new employees or make changes to your business functions, then share the update with your employees.
GETTING MARRIED THIS SUMMER? Congratulations! You tied the knot and cut the cake. Here are some simple steps to make your first joint income tax return less stressful. • Marriage can mean a change in name. Make sure the names you enter on your first tax return match the names and Social Security numbers on file. If a change in surname, be sure to notify the SSA of the change. • No matter when you get married, even on Dec. 31, the IRS considers you to have been married for the entire year for tax purposes. Make sure you have enough taxes taken out of your paychecks. Your combined income may place you in a higher tax bracket. • A notification of a change of address applies to the post office as well as the IRS. Use Form 8822, Change of Address. • Just in case you forgot to invite your employer to the wedding, make sure you let them know about any name/address changes to ensure your Form W-2 isn’t sent to an old address. • If you purchased insurance coverage from the Health Insurance Marketplace and have advance payments of the premium tax credit made directly to your insurer, it’s important that you report changes in circumstances, such as changes in your name or family size, to your Marketplace.
• Select the right tax form. Newly married taxpayers may find that they now have enough deductions to itemize on their tax returns. • Choose the best filing status. A person’s marital status on Dec. 31 determines whether the person is considered married for that year. Generally, the tax law allows married couples to choose to file their federal income tax return either jointly or separately for any given year. Figuring the tax both ways can determine which filing status will result in the lowest tax.
CREDIT FOR SUMMER CHILD CARE EXPENSES Many parents pay for childcare or day camps in the summer while they work. These expenses may qualify for a federal tax credit that can lower your taxes. Check out these Child & Dependent Care Credit facts: • Expenses must be for the care of one or more qualifying people — usually your dependent child or children under age 13. For more about this rule see Publication 503, Child and Dependent Care Expenses. • Expenses must be work-related. You must pay for the care so you can work or look for work. This rule also applies to your spouse if you file a joint return. Your spouse meets this rule during any month they are a full-time student. They also meet it if they’re physically or mentally incapable of self-care. • You and your spouse must have earned income, if filing jointly. And, as a rule, if you’re married you must file a joint return to take the credit. But, this rule doesn’t apply if you’re legally separated or if you and your spouse live apart. • Whether you pay for care at home, at a daycare facility, or at a day camp, you may qualify for the credit. • The credit is a percentage of the qualified expenses you pay. In can be as much as 35 percent of your expenses, depending on your income. • The total expense that you can use for the credit in a year is limited. The limit is $3,000 for one qualifying person or $6,000 for two or more. • Overnight camp or summer school tutoring costs do qualify. You can’t include the cost of care provided by your spouse or your child who is under 19 at the end of the year. You also cannot count the cost of care given by a person you can claim as a dependent. Special rules apply if you get dependent care benefits from your employer. • Be sure to keep your receipts and records. Note the name, address and SS number or employer ID number of the care provider. This information must be reported when you claim the credit on your tax return. • Remember that this credit is not just a summer tax benefit. You may be able to claim it for care you pay for throughout the year.

Visitor Industry Updates “BILL ON THE ROAD” VISITS SIOUX FALLS
The Sioux Falls Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) hosted Bill Clevlen with “Bill on the Road” July 10-12. Clevlen recorded four interviews for his podcast, which discusses unique road trip ideas for travelers. The podcast receives more than 60,000 views per month.
The Washington, D.C. area was blanketed with Sioux Falls promotions during the CVB’s sales blitz in June. Part of the promotion included wrapping metro buses with images of Falls Park.
CVB SALES TEAM MAKES SPLASH IN WASHINGTON, D.C.
The Sioux Falls Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) conducted their annual Washington, D.C. sales blitz June 15-19. While in D.C., the sales team met with 33 meeting and event planners, attended two American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) meetings and one Convention Industry Council (CIC) event. The sales blitz was supported by a marketing campaign promoting Sioux Falls that was geo-targeted to the Washington, D.C. metro area. Marketing efforts included direct mail, Pandora audio and metro bus wraps. The campaign centered on encouraging planners to consider Sioux Falls for their next business meeting, convention or event and reached more than 21.4 million people. Twenty ultra-super king metro buses were wrapped with a picturesque photo of Falls Park. The buses run on four routes through the heart of downtown as well as areas within the metro, including: Arlington, Fairfax, Alexandria, Tyson’s Corner, McLean, Georgetown, Silver Spring and Bethesda. A great deal of the success in securing a national piece of business is due to the local involvement and support with the organization or association. If you have a local connection to any national organizations or associations, contact a member of the CVB sales team at (605) 275-6060 or sales@siouxfalls.com.
CVB TO ATTEND TOURISM EDUCATIONAL SEMINAR

Educational sessions range from public relations, marketing trends, international travel marketing, visitor centers, air service development and more.
While in Sioux Falls, Clevlen recorded with Sioux Falls CVB Creative & Communications Manager Betsy McCarty and Tourism Sales Manager Alexa Steiner as well as representatives from Badlands Pawn Gold and Jewelry, Sioux Falls JazzFest, and SculptureWalk. The podcasts are now available on iTunes. The CVB would like to thank the Homewood Suites by Hilton for providing the complimentary accommodation for the hosting. Clevlen has recorded podcasts for many cities such as Houston, Nashville, Baltimore, Kansas City and Louisville. Follow more of his adventures at billontheroad.com.

DESCRIBE SIOUX FALLS IN THREE WORDS: Progressing, Philanthropic, Lively
WHAT IS ONE OF SIOUX FALLS’ BEST-KEPT SECRETS?
MARTY DESLAURIERS UBS
I’d have to say the philanthropy. We are all aware of the big, headlinemaking projects in town and the great impact those have on our community, but it’s the large number of small donors that surprised me. In the last year I was a part of three separate fundraising campaigns, and the support that both the business and private community gave is something we should all be proud of.
WHAT IS THE BEST THING THE CHAMBER DOES FOR THE SIOUX FALLS AREA? The Chamber does a great job bringing together both the public and private sectors to continue moving Sioux Falls in a good direction.
WHAT ARE YOU READING RIGHT NOW? I’m split between two books, “Burning Shield: The Jason Schechterle Story,” who is our Crossroads Summit morning keynote speaker, and “A Brief History of Time: Stephen Hawking.” Having zero education in physics or astronomy, “Burning Shield” is a much easier read.
WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU EVER RECEIVED? When I was growing up, my parents always taught me to treat others the way you want to be treated.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT SIOUX FALLS? I love Sioux Falls because it has everything a person would need or want from city-life without long commutes, heavy traffic or big-city issues like pollution. We have more food options than I could ever dine at, a variety of entertainment options, excellent healthcare and all the retail-therapy a person could need, especially for someone like me who doesn’t love to shop.

WHAT IS THE BEST THING THE CHAMBER DOES FOR THE SIOUX FALLS AREA? The Chamber’s focus on community and business development helps to ensure Sioux Falls is continually developing and improving for a better tomorrow, in both work and play. I think that is really what every resident is looking for in a place to call home.
WHAT HAVE YOU OR YOUR EMPLOYER GAINED FROM BEING A CHAMBER MEMBER? I have received many benefits from being a Chamber member including educational events, professional development opportunities like co-chairing the upcoming Crossroads Summit and building relationships with other Chamber and YPN members. All of these opportunities allow me to be a better employee, co-worker and community member.
WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU EVER RECEIVED? I’ve been given a lot of advice throughout the years from parents, teachers and mentors, but my favorite is the simple idea that success only comes to those who work for it because it can be applied to all aspects of life.

This year, the grandstand will be filled again as part of the Chamber-sponsored Ag Appreciation Day. Area businesses provide volunteers to serve a complimentary lunch to area farmers as a way to say thank you. The day is sponsored by Touchstone Energy.
