MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
Planting a seed, growing a community The way business is conducted today is different than when I first started my career. Technology enables us to do so much more. Devices allow us to work from nearly anywhere and everywhere. Our market isn’t just the people in our zip code — it’s across the globe. Technology also provides people with choices. Many jobs can be done from anywhere in the world. What’s exciting about our growing entrepreneurial culture in Sioux Falls is the number of people who choose to do their business right here. DANA DYKHOUSE 2014-15 Chair of the Board
It takes a number of things working together to create a culture that people want to be a part of and want to help grow.
Growing that culture doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a recipe for success that mixes the right ingredients of solid infrastructure and technological tools with a sound businessfriendly environment. It’s having a community where people gather together to plan and to vision for our future. I’m grateful to the leaders of the past who have planted seeds that are now blooming. Things like that are where the Chamber of Commerce succeeds. We help build that culture. We ensure that our community is top-notch when it comes to creating a place where all have opportunities to succeed. We gather everyone to the table for community discussions, from business to government to education. The idea-makers … the dreamers … the doers? We’ve got plenty of those people, too — people who believe that their dreams can become reality in Sioux Falls, that they can have an impact on the world from Sioux Falls. There are people in this community working on finding cures for diseases, researching and discovering new inventions to improve humanity and finding creative ways to solve problems. It takes a number of things working together to create a culture that people want to be a part of and want to help grow. Sioux Falls is a community where the dreamers and the status quo can work side-by-side. We have focused efforts on providing resources for entrepreneurs and invested in research and commercial opportunities to help expand our economy. We are continuing to plant seeds for the future as we harvest today’s successes. Congratulations and thank you to our members who make our business community a better place for all through the work they do every day and by their investment in the Chamber.

Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce
There is perhaps no better time to be an entrepreneur in Sioux Falls than right now. A convergence of opportunity, a strong business climate and changing demographics means that support is available for those who want to take the plunge and turn an idea into a reality. More than a decade ago, Forward Sioux Falls invested in a brick and mortar incubator called the South Dakota Technology Business Center (SDTBC), located near the Southeast Technical Institute campus. The SDTBC was a significant investment by the business community through Forward Sioux Falls, the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce and Sioux Falls Development Foundation and others to continue to diversify the Sioux Falls economy. The thought was that if entrepreneurs could focus on developing their ideas without the burdens of managing some of their infrastructure needs or challenges, they would be more successful. If they had access to meeting space and other

resources for growing a business, like the Small Business Development Center and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development, they’d be more successful. If they were surrounded by other entrepreneurial-minded individuals, they would be able to network and share ideas — and they would be more successful. The proof is in the numbers. The SDTBC has helped 22 companies grow and graduate. These companies also impacted the economy by growing to more than 673 full time employees with a combined annual payroll of more than $40.8 million. The SDTBC continues to expand its programs and services as technology and entrepreneurs’ needs change. This year will mark the third year of the SDTBC’s successful Accelerator program, which helps entrepreneurs jumpstart their business ideas and gain access to tools and funding (for more information about the 2015 program and how to apply, see page 38).

MILLENNIALS FEEL VERY EMPOWERED AND THEY REALIZE THE LANDSCAPE OF THE MARKET IS GOING TO CHANGE A LOT
Dr. Ryan Van Zee In the last decade, education has supported expansion in the areas of research and entrepreneurship, as well. In 2013, the SDTBC partnered with the University of South Dakota (USD) for management of the research park in what is now known as the USD Discovery District (for more information about the Discovery District, see page 33). USD is working with the SDTBC and Forward Sioux Falls to plan and launch the park. These organizations will also play a key role in helping attract and support additional park tenants. Dr. Ryan Van Zee, University of Sioux Falls, is the Director of Entrepreneurial Studies, which was established in 2008 thanks to a gift from Tom and Cindy Lillibridge. Students can major or minor in entrepreneurial studies or study it as part of their MBA or degree completion. The program continues to grow, Van Zee said, with the largest growth in undergraduate students.
“Millennials feel very empowered and they realize the landscape of the market is going to change a lot,” Van Zee said. “Smart phones have changed their world. They’re the group that has the self-confidence to do it and they want to be a part of it.” They take a variety of courses to reach their goals and learn more about sales, financing and team management. Part of the classroom work requires students to start off with determining a problem — and then solve it. Some of Sioux Falls’ advantages? Van Zee sees the community’s culture as a major asset for entrepreneurs as well as students who would stay in Sioux Falls to grow their business idea. USF uses members of the business community to assist in teaching students real-world applications. Organizations like the SDTBC, SCORE and the Small Business Development Center serve as resources, Van Zee said. USF also helps students with a revolving loan fund that’s available to them.

Addie Graham-Kramer “The community is there to help out and that support is shown in a number of ways,” he said. “We rely on adjunct professors from all over the business community and our guest speakers are almost all exclusively from Sioux Falls.” Guest speakers tell their stories each week at 1 Million Cups (1MC), a gathering of entrepreneurs, students, mentors and community leaders who meet for a cup of coffee and listen to a business story or two with a goal of making connections and leaving inspired. Addie Graham-Kramer, owner of The Event Company and current emcee of 1 Million Cups Sioux Falls, said 1MC is the highlight of her week. “I have made new friendships, business partnerships and learned so much about the entrepreneurial community by being there. We have some pretty amazing things happening right here in Sioux Falls and some of those may be the ‘next big thing,’” Graham-Kramer said. “As a new entrepreneur, meeting others and hearing them talk about their passions each week energizes my mind and my soul.” The project was started by The Kauffman Foundation in Kansas City in 2012 and the 1MC name was inspired by the thought that if communities could have 1 million more cups of coffee, they could fundamentally change the landscape and culture for entrepreneurs. Local entrepreneurs John Meyer, 9 Clouds, and Paul Batcheller, PrairieGold Venture Partners, helped start the Sioux Falls program which has been active for one year. Since then, other South Dakota communities have launched their own events. Each city runs the program semi-autonomously and gathers together in local coffee shops, community centers, co-working spaces and other host places. 1MC is just one of several ways the culture is changing across the country as well as here in Sioux Falls.

Steffanie Liston-Holtrop, publisher of ‘Hood and MED magazines, spoke at a recent 1 Million Cups Sioux Falls event.
“The support for new entrepreneurs in Sioux Falls is like no other. I come from a family of entrepreneurs and have never seen the outcry of support as it has been in the last few years. Organizations like 1MC provides that system which helps boost our confidence levels and encourages individuals to take a chance and dream big,” Graham-Kramer said. “There have been individuals that have gotten internships, landed new jobs and even new partnerships. As a member of the 1MC community, we care so much for the success of others in our group and we want the best for them. We are there to help them succeed, help them to grow, help them to make new connections and more.” It’s not just new business ideas that can find support in Sioux Falls. This year, Sioux Falls is one of 48 communities taking part in the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Emerging Leaders Initiative, a federal training initiative that

provides executives with the organizational framework, resource network and motivation required to build sustainable businesses. Over the course of seven months, participants are given the opportunity to work with experienced mentors, attend specialized workshops and develop connections with their peers, city leaders and the financial community. The initiative incorporates a curriculum that is research-based and nationally scalable, enabling participating businesses to engage in focused development and expansion strategies, including options for accessing new capital and securing government contracts. The end result prepares and encourages small businesses to move to the next level on their growth trajectory and to help them emerge as self-sustaining businesses that create jobs and build communities. Entrepreneurs produce a threeyear strategic growth action plan with benchmarks and performance targets that will help them access the necessary support and resources to move forward. For many entrepreneurs, no matter what stage of development they are in, it starts with a dream. Later this spring, a new place for thinkers, doers and creatives will gather in what was once a bakery on the north side of downtown Sioux Falls. The Bakery, as the building is known, is the brainchild of Fluxxr founders Brian Rand and Clint Brown. They combined their need for a new office space with a desire to create a gathering place for entrepreneurs. Their company will occupy part of the building, with the remaining space available for members. Rand and Brown envision a place where problems can be solved and the business and education communities can interact. They see The Bakery as an enhancement to organizations like the Chamber of Commerce and a benefit to Sioux Falls’ growing entrepreneurial community. “We don’t lack capital, resources or coordination,” Brown said of the local entrepreneurial community. “I think we all want the same thing — to make Sioux Falls better and to hone our own crafts in our own ways.”

USD Discovery District completes master plan The master plan for the newly re-named University of South Dakota Discovery District is complete and the next steps for implementing that plan are underway. The potential to rename became evident as the process advanced, said Rich Naser, president of the park corporation. “As the Architecture Incorporated and Perkins & Will planning team gathered local input and shared national and international research park trends, the concept evolved from a segregated suburban development park to an urban village more fully integrated into the surrounding community,” he said. Naser said the name “Discovery District” captures the essence of the activities the project’s stakeholders want to stimulate. “We want students, entrepreneurs and researchers all interacting to foster innovation and economic development.”
The stakeholders involved in establishing the new Discovery District are the South Dakota Board of Regents, the University of South Dakota, the City of Sioux Falls, Forward Sioux Falls, the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce and the Sioux Falls Development Foundation. According to David Green, Perkins & Will, establishing an integrated district is vital to its success. “The Discovery District needs to be a platform for bringing together a strong crosssection of the great research and commercial opportunities in South Dakota from around the U.S. and the world,” Green said. “This is a model for global innovation and long-term investment in the future of the region.”
With the master plan complete, the USD Discovery District hired local firms Confluence and Sayre & Associates to design the first phase of road and utility infrastructure. Construction of the 2,039 linear ft. of street and utilities are planned to start in 2015. At the same time, a feasibility study is being conducted for the first potential new building. A need for pharmaceutical and biologic production space was identified last year during the master planning process. The feasibility study will evaluate the requirements of potential tenants; model a facility design and construction costs; and recommend strategies for developing and operating a facility. “2015 will be an exciting year,” Naser said. “The USD Discovery District is transitioning from a concept and plans to a physical development.”

Betty Ordal named Grand Marshal of 2015 St. Patrick’s Day Parade Betty Ordal, recently retired Director of Membership Services for the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce, will be the Grand Marshal of the 36th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade to be held Saturday, March 14. The parade provides an excellent opportunity for people throughout the Sioux Falls region to visit the city for a day of family activities. In 2009, the St. Patrick’s Day Extravaganza Committee, which plans the parade with support from the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce staff, moved the parade permanently to the Saturday before St. Patrick’s Day (or on St. Patrick’s Day if it falls on a Saturday). Events are officially kicked off at 11:45 a.m. with the traditional Painting of the Shamrock at 9th Street and Phillips Avenue. The parade forms at 5th Street and N. Main Avenue at 12:30 p.m. and the parade begins at 2 p.m. The route is south on Main Avenue to 13th Street, east to Phillips Avenue and then north to 8th Street. Streets are closed at 1:30 p.m. and parking is not allowed on the route starting late Saturday morning. Ordal, 71, the daughter of Benny and Marcella Struck and the oldest of 15 children, said she was told by her mother that she is Irish, has the buttons from each of the last 35 parades and grew up near the most Irish community in the state. That, plus her community and business accomplishments, were good enough for the parade planning committee to name her Grand Marshal, said Committee Chair Shawn Cleary. Ordal has fond memories of attending a one-room school near Montrose. When notified that she was to be the grand marshal, Ordal said she was “dumbfounded because it was something I never really expected.” She does promise one thing, though — the weather for this year’s parade will be better than last year, when there was wind and snow flurries. Ordal’s granddaughter Ashley Sandborn wrote: “based on her family tree, she has Irish roots. They may not be as prominent or deep as other candidates; however, she takes

tremendous pride in her Irish heritage. Betty exemplifies key and definitive Irish characteristics on a daily basis. She’s a wonderful mix of great charm, stubbornness and wit.”
BETTY ORDAL
2015 St. Patrick’s Day After attending Gen. Grand Marshal Beadle State College (now Dakota State University), Ordal joined the Chamber staff 48 years ago in a clerical position when membership was around 710. Ordal took responsibility for member recruitment in 1980, introducing programs like the mixers, Good Morning Sioux Falls and Operation Thank You, in which all Chamber members are personally contacted on the same day. When she retired, Chamber membership was 2,200.
Ordal has been active in several community organizations including CASA, Family Visitation Center, EmBe (formerly the YWCA), Sales and Marketing Executives, National Association of Membership Development, Rotary West, Family Services and St. Michael Catholic Church. Sponsorships from Sanford Health, Avera, Holiday Inn City Centre and Xcel Energy help underwrite the costs of bringing the Khartum Temple Pipes and Drums, a Shrine unit from Winnipeg, Manitoba. They have performed in the parade almost since the start and make guest appearances in local schools, nursing homes and hospitals in the days leading up to the parade. Parade participants can register by filling out the registration form at siouxfallschamber. com. Click on the Events and Programs/ Annual Events button and then the St. Patrick’s Day Parade link. There is no entry fee to participate in the parade but each entry must have some kind of Irish theme. Placement in the parade is on a first come, first served basis and is at the discretion of parade officials.
Each parade participant 16 and older must purchase and wear an official St. Patrick’s Day Parade button costing $3. The proceeds help cover parade costs and a portion is donated to Special Olympics South Dakota and to El Riad Shrine Temple. Buttons are available at the Chamber of Commerce office (200 N. Phillips Ave., Suite 200), Mrs. Murphy’s Irish Gifts (219 S. Phillips Ave.) and at the start of the parade. No candy can be distributed. Sioux Falls City Ordinance (Section 38-143) states: “It is unlawful for any person conducting, managing or participating in any parade to distribute or permit the distribution of any candy or balloons to persons in attendance during the parade.” The “Vanguard Squadron,” an ethanolpowered stunt team performing in-formation aerobatics again will be visible during the parade, weather permitting. It is sponsored by POET, a South Dakota ethanol producer. The Sioux Falls Irish Club will sponsor a “Ballads of Ireland” concert featuring Mike Connor and Friends at the Orpheum Theater at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 8. The 2015 Miss Shamrock will also be crowned at this event. (More information can be found at dakotairish.org). The first of three running events connected with the St. Pattys Day Mile starts at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 14, at N. Phillips Avenue and 5th Street. (See stpattysdaymile. com for more information). CONVENTION & VISITORS BUREAU
New marketing campaign to announce “We Are Here” KRISTA ORSACK Sioux Falls Convention & Visitors Bureau
Travelers looking at Sioux Falls will come full circle with a new local aspect of the campaign promoted at partner hotels, attractions and restaurants.
Visitors planning their summer trips are seeking personalized travel, more interaction and a desire to experience a local’s way of life. A new campaign from the Sioux Falls Convention & Visitors Bureau launching this month will speak to potential visitors about the unique cultural vibe of Sioux Falls and invite them to picture themselves here. The primary message of “We Are Here” will evoke a feeling of a more non-traditional travel experience. The secondary message of “you should be, too” will not be a part of the campaign, but it will be implied. The creative concept will focus on the variety of fun and original things to do in Sioux Falls. Using an eclectic variety of quirky illustrations mixed with fun, playful typography, this campaign will speak to young families in larger, more culturally diverse markets, such as: Chicago, Winnipeg, Kansas City, Madison, Milwaukee, Eau Claire and La Crosse. Secondary efforts will continue to build off success from the winter campaign markets, which includes a 300-mile radius around Sioux Falls. The meaning behind “Sioux Falls is Here” carries many connotations, depending on the supporting imagery and messaging in each ad scenario. It could imply an announcement of sorts, naming Sioux Falls as the rightful place on any family’s list of potential tourist destinations. It could serve as metaphorical exclamation point highlighting eclectic attractions only known to locals. For example, Sioux Falls is HERE (show restaurant), HERE (show performance at Pavilion), and HERE (show downtown shops), etc. To keep messaging relevant and up-to-date, campaign messages will be updated to reflect Sioux Falls’ upcoming events and attractions. With the recent success of the CVB’s winter Sioux Falls personality quiz and custom travel guides, each message will be updated and delivered to this audience. Summer destinations and imagery will be used in the quiz and travelers will be able to download a one- or three-day travel guide customized to their persona. The CVB will utilize Instagram as the a primary platform to engage with families and showcase more inspirational photos of Sioux Falls attractions, restaurants and events. Campaign photos will include an overlay of “We Are Here” creative to tie the campaign together. A hashtag will be promoted to potential visitors, current visitors and locals. These tagged images will also be pulled into the website. Travelers looking at Sioux Falls will come full circle with a new local aspect of the campaign promoted at partner hotels, attractions and restaurants. A printed Instagram card will carry the campaign message, hashtag and encourage visitors to go to Falls Park where they can take a “we are here” selfie in front of the Falls at Falls Park. Selfie sticks are now available at the Falls Park Visitor Information Center to use for free when provided with a valid driver’s license. Creative components will be delivered through banner ads, social engagement, search ads, video, inspirational content placements, website updates, campaign landing page, Sioux Falls quiz and new campaign email template. The CVB’s new campaign is made possible with matching grants from the South Dakota Department of Tourism through the Community Cooperative Marketing Program.
Sioux Falls Convention & Visitors Bureau Mission To market the city of Sioux Falls as a one-of-a-kind visitor destination, and to provide premier visitor services, and increase visitor spending in order to enhance economic impact throughout the community. SDTBC’s 2015 Accelerator Challenge: Investing in emerging entrepreneurs For the fourth year in a row, the South Dakota Technology Business Center (SDTBC) is offering its Accelerator Challenge. This year’s sponsors include Forward Sioux Falls, GOED, South Dakota EPSCoR and the SBA. Applications for the program are being accepted until April 20.
PAM BOEHM
South Dakota Technology Business Center
The Accelerator is an important part of economic development in our region and state.
The Accelerator Challenge is designed to support emerging South Dakota entrepreneurs who are preparing to launch or are embarking on a high-growth stage of business. The program focuses on essential business principles while offering access to a wide range of resources and networking opportunities. Participants also receive strategic guidance from mentors and professionals, designed to help them launch their businesses quickly and successfully. Since the Accelerator program was introduced in 2012, there have been 20 participants; 15 have grown their businesses and collectively employ 60 people — and raised more than $2.5 million investment dollars since completing the program. In a few cases, participants determined their ideas were not viable, which can also be a valuable benefit of partaking. Additionally, all selected participants are eligible to “pitch” their ideas for project funding from a pool of $50,000 throughout the program. They use these practice pitches to prepare for the culminating “pitch day” when they have the opportunity to pitch to angel and equity investors. The Accelerator is an important part of economic development in our region and state. The support and resources of the greater business community through Forward Sioux Falls is key to its success. When entrepreneurs are given the training, resources, insights and encouragement they need to propel their businesses forward, everyone wins. Our economy is strengthened. Jobs are often created. New innovative products and services become available. Others are inspired to move forward with their own business ideas. Up to 10 applicants will be selected based upon specific criteria including concept viability, scalability, readiness to launch and the entrepreneurs’ skills and abilities to launch and grow a successful venture. The challenge kicks off with a three-day “Business Launch Boot Camp” that begins May 20, followed by monthly full-day sessions June-September. The program culminates with Pitch Day where participants pitch their ideas to equity investors. In addition, all participant businesses will be showcased during the Innovation Expo on Thursday, Oct. 1.
Throughout the program, participants can also take advantage of special opportunities, such as no- or low-cost space at SDTBC and professional services discounts. We challenge you — the Sioux Falls area business community — to help us get the word out about this opportunity. Often, funding is the motivator for many applicants. However what participants ultimately gain through the program — new skills, insights, resources and relationships — is just as valuable as the funds they might receive. Entry forms and instructions are available at sdtbc.com/accelerator and are accepted now through April 20. There are no program entry fees or expenses; however participants are responsible for their own travel and lodging expenses if coming from out of town.
For more information, contact Pam Boehm at pamb@sdtbc.com or (605) 275-8008. Pam Boehm is the Entrepreneurship and Incubation Manager for the South Dakota Technology Business Center.

USING YOUR MEMBERSHIP
Your membership benefit checklist Businesses join the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce for many different reasons. At the foundation of each membership should be the desire to be part of the unified group that makes the Sioux Falls area economically strong, well-positioned to grow into the future and concerned for the wellbeing of everyone who lives here. There are additional benefits that contribute even more to the value of each membership. Networking … exposure … leadership development … the I (or a co-worker or employee) am a member of the Chamber’s Young Professionals Network (YPN).
The community has benefited from the vision and hard work that community leaders have provided in the past 100-plus years. The Chamber’s Young Professionals Network (YPN) exists to promote an overall investment in the future progress of the Sioux Falls area. With more than 950 members, the YPN strives to create an environment where young professionals have influence, to provide opportunities to develop the skills for professional success, to enhance personal development and to interact professionally and socially. The YPN offers a variety of events and programs to fit any schedule.
I attend networking events such as Membership Mixers or the Good Morning Sioux Falls programs.
It may be an old saying, but “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know” does hold some credibility in growing your business. Attendance at the monthly Chamber Membership Mixers provides you with a room of 200-300 potential customers. You are encouraged to attend and bring your employees. Share the good news about your business and learn more about the event host and the ever-growing business community. If you’re a first-time attendee, look for the members of the Diplomat Committee, who have green ribbons on their name badges. Bring some business cards with you and an openness to meeting new people and possibilities. If attending events after work doesn’t fit your schedule … or if you like to stay well-informed of current community happenings, then the Good Morning Sioux Falls program is designed just for you. These early morning events are designed to offer a mix of networking with concise programs that offer insight to the development of the community and state. The next Good Morning Sioux Falls event will be held April 9 at the Holiday Inn City Centre.
opportunities are endless for Chamber members and their employees. In the next several issues, this space will share a checklist of some opportunities, tools and events that you may want to take advantage of to enhance your Chamber membership experience. If you would like more information on any of the ideas listed below, contact the Chamber’s Membership Department to discuss how these benefits can be put to work for your business. I attend educational events such as Business Sense Workshops or Chamber Café.
The Chamber offers low-cost training to all Chamber members and their employees through the annual Business Sense Workshop series, planned and sponsored by the Chamber’s Small Business Council. These one-hour workshops deliver ongoing business and management training led by talented and engaging Chamber member presenters. The Business Sense Workshops and all Chamber events are open to business owners AND their employees. Feel free to send your employees and take advantage of the valuable informational sessions. For certain professions, participation in some workshops can qualify for Continuing Education Credits. Bring your business cards. Stand up. Shake hands. Exchange those business cards. Promote your business and get to know other Chamber members. Chamber Café is a series of one-hour programs on a variety of topics presented by Chamber members and their employees in their areas of expertise. Funding your ideas and projects through grants … social media policy balance … developing your customer service strategy … these sessions offer a wide range of educational topics that might be just what you’re looking for. The Small Business Council is always looking for topics and presenters for future Chamber Café sessions.
I am a member of or have attended a meeting of a Chamber Committee.
The Chamber offers a variety of volunteer opportunities designed for various interests and time availability. If you’re interested in really getting to know the business community and have the time to commit to the mission, you might consider joining the Ambassador or Diplomat committees. The Ambassadors work to sell memberships in the Chamber. The Diplomats provide service to the membership. Both groups attend ribbon cuttings and membership events. There are also 10 other volunteer committees within the Chamber. Agri-Business … Military & Veterans Affairs … Sports & Recreation … they offer a variety of opportunities to fit your area of interest and schedule availability. The Chamber also offers short-term volunteer opportunities for anyone who might want to participate for one hour, one day or one week. These opportunities vary from the Sioux Empire Farm Show, to Operation Thank You to Sports Tournament Hosting.

MEMBER’S VOICE
Sioux Falls March Madness heads to a new level in 2015 March Madness has been part of Sioux Falls since we first hosted the Summit League Basketball Championships in 2009. This March, however, we will take the madness to a whole new level.
SUMMIT LEAGUE BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Sioux Falls has become a haven for basketball. The nation has taken notice and Madness to the Falls is becoming our identity.
On March 7, we will again welcome the Summit League Basketball Championships to Sioux Falls for the seventh consecutive year. This year, however, we will do so in the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center. With a new building comes a new experience. Many of us have already enjoyed an event or two in the new facility. We understand the improved sight lines, improved comfort and enhanced amenities, but we plan to take the tournament to a whole new level. We already own the top six total attendance figures in Summit League history and this year we look to shatter the all-time mark of 44,868 set in 2013 by eclipsing 50,000. Enhanced fan experience? We’ll have that, too. For the first time in tournament history, we will have a dedicated Summit League Basketball Championship mobile app. Just search for “Summit Hoops” on iTunes or Google Play. The app, powered by Yellow Jacket Irrigation & Landscaping, will feature full team rosters, live stats, in-game promotion registrations, detailed maps of the facility, ability to purchase tickets from your phone, and social media feeds that will allow you to stay up-to-date while providing you with an easy option to share your status and photos of the championships. Just don’t forget to include #march2thesummit. How about a sports lounge? OK, we’ll make that happen. With support from Daktronics and Ovations Food Services, we are turning a section of the Event Level into the Summit Lounge, where you can enjoy a live feed from the court on a 60 sq. ft. television so you’ll never miss a moment of the action. Ovations will feature Dakota nachos, chislic and slider burgers on the menu, along with an assortment of beverages. The Summit Lounge will remain open in between sessions, so you’ll never have to leave the building.
NCAA DII WOMEN’S ELITE EIGHT On March 27, we will crown a national champion in Sioux Falls at the Sanford Pentagon. In partnership with the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) and the Sioux Falls Sports Authority, the Pentagon will serve as the host facility for the 2015 NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Elite Eight on March 24-27. The nation’s top eight teams will compete for the opportunity to cut down the nets and for the first time you will be able to experience it live. Elite Eight games will be played on Tuesday, March 24, the Final Four will take place on Wednesday, March 25, and the Championship game will tip-off at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 27. Tickets are available at NCAA.com/tickets and at the Sanford Pentagon box office. Sioux Falls has become a haven for basketball. The nation has taken notice and Madness at the Falls is becoming our identity. And this year is just the beginning, as Sioux Falls will also host the NCAA Division I Women’s Regional in 2016. Wes Hall is the Executive Director of the Sioux Falls Sports Authority.

Visitor Industry Updates CVB PROMOTES NEW SPORTS CAMPAIGN: ALL ROADS LEAD TO SIOUX FALLS
To engage with the ever-expanding sports visitor segment traveling to Sioux Falls, a completely new leisure marketing strategy kicked off in February just in time for the Summit League Basketball Championships. The Sioux Falls Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) is a Midcontinent Sports Network Summit League sponsor for the first time, receiving television exposure across the region during the tournament as well as on Inside The Summit League. The television sponsorship will be enhanced with an online strategy that will seek to engage with the ever-expanding sports visitor through social media channels while showcasing Sioux Falls, The Summit League and participating universities. RoadtoSiouxFalls.com will become known to every visitor coming to Sioux Falls for sports events throughout the year. Various promotions will roll out that are tailored to youth, amateur, collegiate or professional events. The #RoadToSiouxFalls hashtag will be utilized across social platforms to help generate awareness of Sioux Falls as a sports destination. As each campaign develops there will be one constant: asking teams and fans for direct participation in the use of the #RoadToSiouxFalls hashtag. Showing behind the scenes photos and videos will help tie the teams together with their fan base leading up to, on the road to and during exciting sports events. The first promotion for the Summit League Basketball Championships will end March 11, 2015, and include two avenues of participation. Universities will be asked to share their story on their #RoadToSiouxFalls for the Summit League Basketball Championships on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. At the start of the campaign the Sioux Falls CVB will gift a GoPro Camera to each school that confirms a willingness to share their story through their social networks with the inclusion of #RoadToSiouxFalls. Footage may include behind the scenes, practices, down time, games and celebrations. Participating schools will be allowed to keep the GoPro at the end of the campaign. The second avenue of participation will target fans through a social media content strategy that includes non-paid and paid media efforts. Participating fans will be entered to win a GoPro by sharing photos and videos with #RoadToSiouxFalls. For every share of a photo or video on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter tagged with #RoadToSiouxFalls they will receive one entry. The winner will be randomly selected on March 13 and notified via social media. Eligibility requirements will apply. Photos with the hashtag will be re-shared by the Sioux Falls CVB social accounts as well as used on the website. Instagram shares will be approved and displayed on RoadToSiouxFalls.com.
AAA TRAVEL COUNSELORS LEARN ABOUT AIRPORT UPDATES

FROM THE ARCHIVES
As a membership organization with a history spanning more than a century, the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce has influenced progress across the community in a number of ways throughout the decades.
The Bakery, at 910 N. Main Ave., was home to a number of businesses including the L & A Bakery (pictured in the postcard at top). Later this spring it will be a gathering place for entrepreneurs and others; pictured are the exterior of the building and the interior space gutted. Photo credits: Corey Gross
Cooking up creativity on N. Main Avenue Interest is heating up on a new use for an old building in downtown Sioux Falls. Later this spring The Bakery will open at 910 N. Main Ave. The site of the former L & A Baking Co. will now be home to “thinkers, doers and creators” as designed by FLUXXR, a marketing and business consulting company. Clint Brown and Brian Rand of FLUXXR and the creators of The Bakery, envision a place where students, entrepreneurs, business leaders and creatives in the Sioux Falls community can gather for training, education, mentorship and promotion. Brown and Rand want to encourage and equip the entrepreneurial community to start, build and grow their businesses. The building is next to Tower Park and has a view of Falls Park. It is owned by Jeff and Sheila Hazard. For more information, visit thebakerysf.com
