MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

We have so much to be thankful for here in Sioux Falls — our strong Chamber and excellent business community certainly contribute to the progress we make every day. Small Market Meetings Conference a great success
The Small Market Meetings Conference (SMMC) was held in Sioux Falls Oct. 6-8 at the Sioux Falls Convention Center and the Sioux Falls Sheraton Hotel. More than 225 attendees traveled to Sioux Falls for the conference, including 105 meeting planners from 31 states, the Bahamas, Mexico and Canada. This was the largest meeting planner hosting in Sioux Falls’ history and was a great success for the city. The 2014 SMMC will be in Mesa, Ariz. Sept. 28-30, 2014. The CVB will attend and sponsor as part of the 2013 hosting requirements. Comments and evaluation forms have given overwhelmingly positive reviews of Sioux Falls and its hospitality:
ting was comfortable and every representative exuded “southern hospitality”! Please share my gratitude and complete satisfaction with everyone who worked diligently to make my stay worthwhile. I appreciated Sheraton’s hospitality — their staff bent over backwards to make us comfortable.” — Gwen Knight, Independent Meeting Planner, Lincoln, Kan. “The Sioux Falls CVB really did an outstanding job at SMMC 2013. Thanks for all your hard work. You made us feel welcome and were most helpful. Sioux Falls does not need any better ambassadors than you all at the CVB. … The hotel staff was great and so very helpful. The hotel was nice and certainly a great place to hold a workshop or short course. I loved your downtown. It has that homey feel. In fact, I just liked Sioux Falls.” — Nedra Sneed, Bioactives World Forum, College Station, Texas
“Many thanks to you. Was great to learn about Sioux Falls! What a wonderful host you “I want to thank you and all of your crew and others were from the CVB. A capital campaign to expand the Habitat for Humanity of Sioux Falls ReStore and new warehouse will have a positive economic impact on the community by expanding the number of new homeowners and adding to opportunities for recycling building materials. The organization will hold a campaign kick-off Thursday, Nov. 14 at 4 p.m. at its ReStore, located at 721 E. Amidon St., in northeast Sioux Falls.
— increasing sales and saving even more items from the landfill. A new warehouse will provide year-round building options. Adding the capability to build some home components indoors will extend the volunteer opportunities year-round and expand the number of homes the organization can build. Once the campaign is successfully completed, the organization will formally map out the space Olsen said. They intend to break ground in 2014. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sioux Falls previously held a Community Appeals drive in 2000 to raise $800,000 to build its warehouse and ReStore. The Sioux Falls ReStore is in the top 10 percent of all Habitat organizations for the amount of sales. Because of the ReStore, Olsen estimates 300 tons of construction materials are saved from the landfill each year. Profits from the ReStore are used to fund builds. Currently, one to two homes per year are at least partially funded by ReStore profits. Sales from the expanded ReStore will fund as many as three additional builds per year.
The plan for the Nov. 1, 2013-March 31, 2014 campaign is based on how HabiSince it started in Sioux Falls in 1989, tat has grown, said Executive Director Sue Habitat has built or rehabilitated more than Olsen. 110 homes, housing 170 adults and 425 “We know there is a housing need and children. we have a vision for the future,” she said. About Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sioux Falls is part of a global, nonprofit housing organization operated on Christian principles that seeks to put God’s love into action by building homes, communities and hope. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sioux Falls is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing locally and worldwide through constructing, rehabilitating and preserving homes; by advocating for fair and just housing policies; and by providing training and access to resources to help families improve their shelter conditions. Habitat for Humanity was founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, durable place to live in dignity and safety, and that decent shelter in decent communities should be a matter of conscience and action for all.
About Community Appeals The Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce created the Community Appeals process in 1953. Its purpose is to qualify and provide orderly scheduling of capital fund drives. The committee has a responsibility to discourage unnecessary or overlapping drives, to assess funds available in the Sioux Falls business community, and to provide input on realistic drive goals. Each year the committee schedules one or two capital fundraising campaigns. Scheduling by the Community Appeals Committee does not imply endorsement of a solicitation by the Chamber of Commerce. It merely indicates that the solicitor has made proper application and provided sufficient evidence to assure reliable leadership, sound business planning, and community need. Chamber members must make their own decisions as to the support each will give the drive. Campaigns are scheduled well in advance; the Community Appeals Committee is currently evaluating applications for 2016. An endorsement by the Chamber’s Community Appeals Committee is an indication that the campaign has been well thought-out, and that the project will benefit the community.

The power of conversations and networking has a lasting impact on our lives, our businesses and our community. Young professionals have a lot to learn from the leaders who have come before them. And, as a way to foster that learning opportunity, the Young Professionals Network (YPN) Mentoring Program will connect young professionals with accomplished leaders from a broad array of backgrounds and professionals from across community. The program will allow for participants to engage in conversations, share resources and expose young professionals to knowledge that will help shape the future of young professionals. “The Mentoring Program provides young professionals with the chance to connect with leaders in our community,” said YPN Steering Committee Chair Megan Myers, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network. “Engaging in conversations, sharing knowledge with one another and helping each other grow personally and professionally will be a win-win for both the mentees and the mentors participating in this program. We are better together when we share skills, information and cultivate relationships with one another.” As a pilot program, the YPN Mentoring Program will build on the opportunities that the YPN can offer to its more than 800 members. The Mentoring Program is designed to allow for small groups of participants to be paired with leaders from our community. The groups will meet quarterly to discuss topics ranging from leadership development, work and life choices, career guidance/progression (such as handling difficult challenges, climbing the ladder, etc.), field specific development (such as entrepreneurial/start-up, building clientele, finance, etc.), networking with other professionals, leadership development and civic and political opportunities (becoming more active in the community and/or local politics). The YPN is accepting online applications for the Mentoring Program through Friday, Nov. 15. To learn more about the program and to apply, visit www.siouxfallsypn.com. Contact YPN Manager Lesa Jarding at ljarding@siouxfalls.com with questions.

Your opinion matters: Take the Chamber’s Annual Issues Survey this month One of the membership benefits is that the Chamber represents businesses at all levels of government, including: the Sioux Falls School District, Sioux Falls City Council, Minnehaha County Commission, federal government and during the legislative session. The Chamber can be most effective as the voice for business when members share their opinions about issues that affect the business climate. One way the Chamber asks for input is through its annual issues survey sent to members later this month. The survey results are used to guide the Chamber in crafting positions on issues endorsed by the Chamber Board of Directors, the Issues Management Council, Tax Council and Chamber staff. The results of the survey will be made available to Chamber members. All responses to the survey questions will remain confidential and will not be released by individual or company name. The questions in the survey are relevant to all levels of government, but particularly focus on the upcoming legislative session. Based on the responses, a platform will be developed that will be used for the Chamber’s lobbying efforts during the upcoming legislative session in Pierre. The platform will be approved by the Chamber’s Board of Directors at the December 2013 meeting and will then be posted at www. SiouxFallsChamber.com under the Advocacy tab. The survey will be sent to members in November and responses will be collected through Friday, Nov. 22. For more information, contact Public Affairs & Communications Director Mark Lee at (605) 373-2004 or mlee@siouxfalls.com.
