MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

Reflections on an extraordinary career How can you thank someone for giving 37 years of their life to a city? In Evan Nolte’s case, you begin with well deserved accolades from friends, colleagues and civic leaders – the folks many of us heard from in the wonderfully crafted video tribute featured at the Annual Meeting of the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce. I saw many of you there – so thank you for supporting the Chamber at what was a terrific evening.

DAVE KAPASKA, D.O. 2016-17 Chair of the Board

Evan led our Chamber — and city — through an era of great change and development.

Add countless personal notes of appreciation many of us have been – and will be – passing on since Evan, the Chamber’s longtime president and CEO, announced his retirement. I know many of you already have taken the opportunity to express your gratitude for a job well done. Then mix in a community event that will lift up Evan and his amazing contributions in such a way that will place a bow on a memorable chapter in our city’s history. Look for details on that celebration in the weeks ahead. That’s all part of how we are leading the Chamber’s salute to Evan. But there’s one more way that is even more important: Find someone who will continue the remarkable work Evan has done to shape this city through its business leadership. A successful Chamber president builds relationships, thinks strategically and works collaboratively while keeping an eye on the far horizon. That’s what Evan has done, and that’s what our next leader will do. While we will miss Evan and his unique brand of leadership, we are hard at work identifying the person who will fill that vitally important role in the years to come. You could say that Evan joined the Chamber at a pivotal time in our city’s history. Eighty thousand people called Sioux Falls home. In large part, nobody lived south of 57th Street. Look at us today. In 37 years, our population has doubled and growth – in all directions, in all ways – continues to transform Sioux Falls into an increasingly vibrant city. Evan has led our Chamber – and city - through an era of great change and development. It was a big job, and he did it well. While finding a replacement is a daunting task, our selection committee is working hard. Here’s what we know: The success of the past is no guarantee of success in the future, and we are committed to selecting a leader who is up to the many challenges of our rapidly changing city and economy. So, hat’s off to Evan for an extraordinary career! Let’s send him into retirement in style. Together, then, we will face the future. With your support, and new, committed leadership, the future is bright indeed.

COVER STORY

Any story about retiring Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce President/CEO Evan Nolte could be titled “Hometown boy makes good,” though it might make the Sioux Falls native uncomfortable — being in the spotlight has never been his style.

The new President/CEO could be announced in the next month, allowing for an orderly transition by year-end. Nolte has been flexible about his retirement plans, including extending his time past year-end if necessary, to ensure a smooth transition.

Nolte has had to adapt as the community prepares to properly send him off to retirement at the end of 2016 — starting with recognition at last month’s 110th Annual Meeting and another event slated for Dec. 8.

“We will continue to live in Sioux Falls — there’s no doubt it will always be our home base,” Nolte said of his immediate plans following retirement.

When Nolte announced his retirement a national search commenced, led by Waverly Partners LLC, a company that specializes in chamber executive searches.

In the late 1970s, the Noltes lived in the Mason City, Iowa area, where he was the chamber executive for Mason City. He and his wife, Lesley, had been married for two years and their sons were not yet school-aged. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce regional office played a significant role in many local chamber organizations, including Sioux Falls, and was called to assist in the search for a new Chamber executive. Nolte thinks his name was thrown in the mix because he was known by the regional office. In the fall of 1978, he received a letter alerting him to the opening in Sioux Falls, later interviewed for the job and started on Feb. 1, 1979 — commuting from Iowa that winter.

“It has been humbling to hear the respect the candidates have for our Chamber, our businesses, our city and our state,” said 2015-16 Chair of the Board Paul Bruflat, CNA Surety. Bruflat has led the search process along with 2016-17 Chair of the Board Dave Kapaska, D.O., Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center. Leading this Chamber would be a career-defining moment the candidates shared, Bruflat said. “One major concern is following the legend of Evan Nolte. Evan spent time with each candidate, which has inspired them to have confidence that they can perform well as our Chamber CEO.”

RETURNING HOME

Nolte’s ties to Sioux Falls are part of what made him an attractive candidate, said Bernie DeWald, McKinneyOlson Insurance. DeWald was the President of the Chamber at

that time and hired Nolte, who attended Iowa State University before graduating from Augustana College (now University) where he majored in political science and minored in business administration. His first job was as the Chamber executive in Nebraska City, Neb. Nolte also served in leadership roles for chambers of commerce in Yankton, S.D., and St. Joseph, Mo., before Mason City, Iowa. “There was no question that it was a great opportunity to return to Sioux Falls. I never really dreamed I’d be coming back,” Nolte said. “Sioux Falls has always been a special place for me.” Having DeWald as the President of the Chamber was a huge benefit, Nolte said. At the time, the Chamber staff member held the title of Executive Vice President and the volunteer leader held the title of President; those roles changed in 1992 and the staff member is now the President and CEO and the volunteer leader is the Chair of the Board of Directors. “I can’t say how many hundreds of Chamber members and community leaders that Bernie and I met with in the first several months. As I look back on it, it was absolutely the best thing that could have happened for me and for the Chamber. Bernie was just a natural in that he was so well-acquainted, respected and connected in the community,” he said. DeWald noted Nolte’s many accomplishments, including the ability to work with 37 chairs of the board and 37 boards of directors. Nolte was never a person to pat himself on the back, DeWald said, as he was the behind-the-scenes person who did the majority of the work and always gave the credit to the committee member or volunteers. 28  Chamber News | NOVEMBER 2016

“I always felt he would be the President of our Chamber at least as long or even longer than I would be involved in Chamber work,” DeWald said. It appears that DeWald, who is still a Chamber Ambassador, will outlast Nolte, however. Nolte was 37 when he took over the helm of the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce and never imagined he would end his career in Sioux Falls, he said. “The challenge and opportunity for leadership along with the significant economic growth of the Sioux Falls area helped make it possible.”

LEADING A MEMBERSHIP ORGANIZATION “We are a Chamber that sells the value proposition of membership,” Nolte said. “As we plan for the future, we talk about relevancy. Our future success depends on the value we provide for our members and the Sioux Falls area. Any other issues will take care of themselves.” He has enjoyed the experience of being a part of the Sioux Falls area’s growth and change over the past three decades, with the economy strengthening and diversifying along the

way. The financial services and health care industries have led the way, but Nolte sees other industries as bright spots, too — from small business growth to the culture of entrepreneurship that has emerged in part due to strategic investments by the Chamber and Forward Sioux Falls. “Sioux Falls is becoming the kind of city that attracts young professionals and others relocating and considering business investments. Our downtown revitalization has been a huge positive factor as well as our new sports and entertainment options — they all make this community attractive,” he said. Under Nolte’s leadership, the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce has doubled its membership. Add in the 1,000member Chamber Young Professionals Network, which started in 2009, it indicates that there are thousands of highly engaged businesses and individuals investing in the future of the Sioux Falls area. “It’s a significant challenge and opportunity to serve and support this area and its growing diversity and economy,” Nolte said. “I can’t say enough about our Chamber staff team — that’s our core. Working with volunteers and staff on important Chamber and community priorities has been my biggest enjoyment and reward.”

CHALLENGES … AND OPPORTUNITIES: 1980S The arrival of Citi to Sioux Falls was a game-changer for South Dakota and the Sioux Falls area, Nolte said. To him, it was reminiscent of the impact that EROS Data Center had more than a decade before and represents how Sioux Falls community leaders consistently collaborate. In the early part of the decade, Sioux Falls was a good business community, but not really a player on the regional or national scene. Later in the ’80s, the upper Midwest was in an agriculture recession. Bolstered by the success and investment of the financial services industry, community leaders had much greater expectations for the Sioux Falls area, Nolte said.

CHALLENGES … AND OPPORTUNITIES: 1990S The success of the first Forward Sioux Falls program in the late 1980s led to more opportunities for collaboration and improving the region’s economic health and quality of life. “Evan is the consummate collaborator. The Chamber has become the central hub that brings business, government and education together. This allows for constructive dialogue to occur and helps keep our community working toward many of the same goals,” Rozenboom said. “Through Evan’s leadership, the Chamber has earned the respect and confidence of everyone and people want to pitch in and be a part of it.”

Many consider Forward Sioux Falls, the successful joint venture program between the Chamber and the Sioux Falls Development Foundation, to be one of the most significant accomplishments during Nolte’s tenure. “The initial program began in 1987 with a vision to have us be visible and competitive on a national level,” said Dave Rozenboom, First PREMIER Bank. Rozenboom served as Chamber Chair of the Board in 2009-10 and also co-chaired the Forward Sioux Falls 2021 campaign. “Fast forward nearly 30 years and seven programs later, the cumulative impact has been amazing.” Rozenboom credits Forward Sioux Falls’ success to the collaborative, public/private partnership of community and business leaders who worked together to identify the top challenges and opportunities for each five-year program period. “Once we agreed on those, we could then pool our resources of time, talent and treasure together and truly move the needle for our community — and the proof is all around us,” Rozenboom said. “What we all enjoy about Sioux Falls didn’t just happen by accident. I believe that Forward Sioux Falls has been the ‘secret sauce to our success’ and Evan has provided a steady hand of leadership since Day 1.” THIS PAGE, LEFT: Nolte (far right) is pictured a the ribbon cutting ceremony for the former Chamber offices at 315 S. The Chamber ramped up its advocacy efforts in the 1990s, including its support of a convention center and performing arts center. The first public vote on a proposed downtown convention center and performing arts center had been defeated by two percentage points in the 1980s. It was devastating to the business community, Nolte said. TACCO (Taxpayers Against Convention Center Obligation) was an example of a negative group that took shape in the community. The community began to see progress when a community coalition backing a convention center and a performing arts center collaborated to strongly support a “yes” vote for both facilities. It was approved by voters in a referendum held in October 1993. “The passage of this issue was a major decision on the part of the community and helped set other developments in place,” Nolte said. “I think back to what the environment was like in the mid-1980s and wonder where would we be had that vote failed?” The 1990s were an era of major milestones in the community. Money Magazine named Sioux Falls the “Best Place to Live in America” in 1992. Sioux Falls received national attention and an influx of inquiries about moving here and doing business here. In 1994, the Chamber collaborated with other community partners on a visioning process called Sioux Falls

Tomorrow working with the National Civic League. The midto-late 1990s was marked by a significant amount of economic growth in the area. The Sioux Falls Convention Center opened in 1998, followed by the Washington Pavilion in 1999. The early 1990s are also remembered for a tragedy, when in 1993 a small plane carrying Sioux Falls community leaders and South Dakota Gov. George Mickelson crashed while returning from a visit to the corporate headquarters of John Morrell. “There’s no question the tragic loss of those visionary leaders had a tremendous impact on our state,” Nolte said. “Other leaders were left trying to carry on that spirit.”

CHALLENGES … AND OPPORTUNITIES: 2000S AND BEYOND Planning for the future defined the 2000s. “I don’t know that anyone clearly saw the recession coming, particularly with the strong economy at the turn of the century,” Nolte said. A second Sioux Falls Tomorrow visioning process took place in 2004, prior to the recession. A few years later, a number of community groups again came together as part of the Future Sioux Falls program and research, which led into the Forward Sioux Falls 2011-2016 program, the sixth FSF program. A third Sioux Falls Tomorrow planning process took place in 2014, led by the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation and the City of Sioux Falls. Candy Hanson, past CEO and now Senior Advisor for the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation, knows Nolte both as a colleague and family friend. “I admire Evan’s leadership, especially in rough times. We

were all concerned when the recession hit. Evan pulled a panel of business and nonprofit leaders together to encourage Chamber members to keep moving forward,” Hanson said. “Throughout his career, he’s maintained a dogged belief in the strength of our community and its ability to overcome setbacks and adversity. His steady, consistent leadership is priceless.” Nolte’s steady hand touched many areas in the business community — including inside the Chamber. The Sioux Falls Convention & Visitors Bureau was formed out of a Chamber committee in the 1970s and remains part of the Chamber organization. CVB Executive Director Teri Schmidt has worked with Nolte since 1984. “The most significant thing about Evan’s accomplishments is within the style he made things happen. He worked behind the scenes to get things done, talking to the right people at the right time and setting the stage for a goal to be reached,” Schmidt said. “This made him the perfect fit for Sioux Falls — always managing other’s working styles without them even realizing it, but always with the goal of getting things done for the betterment of Sioux Falls.” Because the CVB is a major part of the Chamber, facilities have been important from both an economic development and quality of life standpoint. The Chamber was represented on a number of facilities task forces, including several for an events center. The Chamber was always at the forefront and a critical element in terms of planning and issue campaigns, Nolte said, citing the 2011 events center public vote as a tremendous challenge for the community. The Chamber membership was divided on where the new facility should be located. It was clear, however, that Sioux Falls needed a new event center, Nolte said — there was no disagreement on that. chambernews.com | Chamber News  31

After reviewing the city’s research on events centers and recommendations including location alternatives, the Chamber Board of Directors adopted a policy position supporting the construction of an events center. “There is a time when the research is done and you need to take a strong advocacy position on a community issue,” Nolte said. The Denny Sanford PREMIER Center opened in the fall of 2014. Studying community issues and communicating to members about them has long been a Chamber membership benefit. “We’re at the best place we’ve ever been in my career as far as the strength of our issues and research process,” Nolte said. He credits volunteer leaders and Chamber staff team with developing and effectively implementing that program. The Chamber utilizes research and issue briefs to inform members and take positions where warranted. That information is then communicated in a number of ways — and issue positions are not always popular in a membership organization, Nolte said. “Members may not always be totally aligned, but the process

32  Chamber News | NOVEMBER 2016

and further development of that process in the future is going to serve us well,” he said. Steady servant leadership, working with and through community leaders and bringing them together to turn challenges into opportunities define Nolte’s legacy, said Rich Naser, President of the Zeal Center for Entrepreneurship and the USD Discovery District. Both of these entities were developed out of Forward Sioux Falls programs to help grow new businesses and diversify the economy. “Evan has focused on the long game for Sioux Falls’ success and not let minor setbacks or distractions turn the Chamber’s and Forward Sioux Falls’ focus,” Naser said. “Evan has been very humble, not worried about who received the credit for success. Through that approach, he’s has had major impact on our community.” Sioux Falls is unique, Nolte said. “Those of us who live here sometimes assume others have this same type of culture — and some do — but I believe that we are looked at as a model for best practices,” Nolte said.

In the last decade, several communities have traveled to Sioux Falls as part of “aspirational city visits” to learn more about the culture. It’s a great reminder of how important telling the Sioux Falls story is, Nolte said. “The culture here is one of collaboration that stretches across community organizations. It has made the Chamber and Forward Sioux Falls successful and built our brand name,” he said. “That synergy seems to go on.” The challenge for the future as the community continues to grow is to keep that culture and to be open and receptive to change, Nolte said. “As a result of growing community confidence, we can achieve additional major projects and successfully address issues,” he said. “We found out, sometimes through hard lessons, the way to be successful is to come together on important issues facing the community.”

WHAT’S NEXT? The Noltes’ four sons and their families are located throughout the U.S., along with other friends and family. Nolte anticipates making more visits now that he will have more time. He will also continue to be selectively involved in various community projects as a volunteer. And outdoor recreation will also take up more time, too. Nolte said he intends to support the new Chamber President/CEO however needed. “I want to be very sensitive to the fact that this is going to be their opportunity, just like I had,” he said. He thinks the Chamber is much stronger today than it was 37 years ago — but Nolte doesn’t take the credit. “That’s not my doing alone. It has to do with many things: our staff over the years, our community partners. Economically, our Chamber and City are much stronger today. But, the issues that we face as we become larger are more challenging,” he said. “Our continued success will depend on the way we handle those challenges with our partners. Whether it’s the staff, our partners or the membership, I always believe it has to do with setting expectations and building relationships with people.” A quote Nolte heard years ago sums up his management philosophy over his 40-plus year career in the Chamber industry: The factor in determining success is the “we,” not the “I.” “I hope I’ll be remembered for the ‘we,’” he said.

MEMBER VOICE

Servant leadership from day one In late 1978, the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce was in a little bit of turmoil. It was not that things were bad, but a lot of changes and transitions occurred within a relatively short time span that left many people feeling uncertain about the future. The Chair of the Board, who at that time was called the President, had resigned unexpectedly and moved away. Not long after that, the lead staff position, then called the Executive Vice President, also departed. In addition, the Chamber was in the process of moving their offices from a space on West 9th Street to a new location on East 10th Street. BERNIE DEWALD

McKinneyOlson Insurance

It was in this environment that a Search Committee was formed and began the task of identifying the next leader of the Chamber. We undertook a nationwide search and had a number of qualified candidates, but Evan Nolte stood out. In him, the Search Committee found a candidate not only with experience in other Chambers around the Midwest, but also with personal ties to Sioux Falls. From the very beginning, Evan displayed the leadership traits we have all come to know of him over the years. He approached his new role thoughtfully, taking time to study the community and the issues. In those early days, Evan spent a lot of time meeting with various volunteers and stakeholders, building a foundation of trust.

Evan has a unique ability to identify the strengths in other people…

Evan has a unique ability to identify the strengths in other people and to use those strengths to benefit our entire community. His knack for assembling all the right people together, seeking input, and guiding the group to decision and action has had a profound impact on Sioux Falls over the past 37 years. Board members found that Evan trusted them to identify the needs and priorities of the community. He was always fully supportive of the Board’s direction, and of all the committees and volunteers charged with carrying out the Chamber’s initiatives. So often, Evan did a majority of work behind the scenes, but deferred the credit to a volunteer. Evan, you have worked tirelessly for the good of our whole community. As you enter your well-deserved retirement, we thank you for your dedicated and humble service. Bernie DeWald, McKinneyOlson Insurance, was the President of the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce in 1978-79 (now called Chair of the Board) and led the search committee that hired Evan Nolte. DeWald remains an active member of the Chamber, currently serving as an Ambassador. Betty Ordal was the Manager of Community Affairs for the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce in 1979. She retired from the position of Member Services Director in 2014 after 48 years of service to the Chamber and our community.

BUSINESS ADVOCACY

Thoughtful preparation ensures strong representation When you opened this issue of Chamber News, the 2016 general election was over and the results were in. It was a particularly busy summer and fall as we researched, studied and considered the 10 ballot issues you just voted on. We hope you found our work valuable as you learned about the issues and the Chamber’s position on each one. Now a new round of work begins for your Chamber as we ramp-up our preparations for the 2017 Legislative Session. I’d like to recap the process we follow that prepares us to most effectively advocate in Pierre for business and the Sioux Falls area. MARK LEE

Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce

...our process to prepare for each legislative session is thorough and our process to respond to realtime activity is responsive.

We begin each year with a review of our Policy Statements. While we tend to make minor adjustments to the Policy Statements each year to reflect the current public policy context of our state and chamber, the changes are generally minimal. The Policy Statements serve as our guiding principles for our public policy work as they represent “what we believe” more than provide a work plan for “what we will do.” They are, however, important. For example, during session as unforeseen issues emerge or as amendments to bills are offered, our Policy Statements guide us. That is precisely why we evaluate and edit the statements each fall leading-up to session. The next step will be the development of our Legislative Platform. In an election year, platform development is even more challenging as we generally have to wait until after the election for lawmakers to begin discussing their legislative plans. And, even then, legislators can hold their cards close to the vest. To aid the process, we also spend time conferring with lobbyists and association executives to gain insight into issues that might be forthcoming. The Issues Management Council (IMC) will review a very rough draft of platform ideas in November. Two other important pieces of information are forthcoming in late November and early December. The first is a Legislative Issues Survey. This is used to help us gauge the opinion of our members on issues we predict to be most prominent during session. It is an imperfect process because at this point we have imperfect information. Still, the guidance is helpful. Next, is the Governor’s Budget Address scheduled this year for December 6. During this address, the Governor outlines his proposed budget and spending priorities to conclude this fiscal year and for the coming year. These activities lead us to the December IMC meeting where we approve a Legislative Platform and recommend its adoption by the Board of Directors. The Executive Committee of the Board will review the recommendation and forward the Platform, with any proposed changes, to the full Board for ratification. From that point, we are ready for session to begin. However, like any good battle plan you can often throw it out the window soon after things begin to heat-up. That is where the Board’s Legislative Issues Committee comes in. This group is comprised of the Board Executive Committee, the Chair and Vice-Chair of IMC, the Board Liaison to IMC plus staff. It meets every Friday at noon for a briefing and to provide guidance on issues as they are moving through the process. I hope you agree that our process to prepare for each legislative session is thorough and our process to respond to real-time activity is responsive. All of this is done to ensure that the voice of business from the Sioux Falls area is well-prepared to represent Chamber members and the business community. In the next two months, we look forward to the finalizing our preparations and representing you in Pierre. Mark Lee is the Public Affairs & Communications Director for the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce. He also serves as the full-time lobbyist for the Chamber and Forward Sioux Falls during South Dakota’s legislative session.

Levitt at the Falls will enhance quality of life, provide economic impact

Collaboration among various organizations crucial in the process BY MIKE LYNCH Forward Sioux Falls

It all began with a conversation between two 1967 Washington High School alums. Before long, meetings were arranged, ideas shared and the possibility of Sioux Falls becoming part of a national network of outdoor performance venues began to take shape and ultimately, “Levitt at the Falls” was born. The $1.06 million Chamber Community Appeals-approved campaign Levitt at the Falls, Building Community Through Music, which runs from Nov. 1, 2016-March 31, 2017, will become reality in 2019 with a state-of-the-art performance facility on the south side of Falls Park West along Phillips Avenue. Construction will begin in 2018. Levitt at the Falls will offer thousands of residents and visitors the opportunity to enjoy approximately 50 free unique concerts annually. Artists, including those acclaimed, emerging, seasoned and awardwinning will be secured from all across this region and others throughout the country, representing multiple genres including R&B, country, rock, Latin, jazz, children’s and World to name a few. All concerts will be family-friendly and among the professional acts to perform, will be Sioux Falls’ talent and performance organizations. The Levitt Shell will feature an open-lawn setting and state-of-the-art sound and lighting. The aforementioned conversation, which took place in 2011, was between Tom Dempster, now Friends of Levitt Board Chair and Sioux Falls native and California architect Tim Boe, now deceased. “Tim told me it was his dream to bring Levitt to Sioux Falls.” Tom helped put together a group of people including Candy Hanson, then director of the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation. Candy told Tom, “Call Jennifer Kirby.” He did and Jennifer Kirby, a long-time resident and community leader, has been instrumental in Levitt’s success in Sioux Falls. She joins John Henkhaus, The Everist Company, and Chris Thorkelson, Lloyd Construction as the Levitt Community Appeals Co-chair. Next, the Mortimer & Mimi Levitt Foundation Executive Director Sharon Yazowski was invited to visit Sioux Falls to meet with supporters, as well as Mayor Mike Huether. Before returning to California, Yazowski expressed confidence that Sioux Falls would be an ideal Levitt community. The national Levitt Foundation will grant Friends of Levitt $500,000 toward construction costs and $250,000 for the first year of operations. The operational grants decrease gradually and level out at a generous $150,000 annually, beginning in the fourth year of operation for the life of the contract. (The contract extends for 50 years or when the venue becomes unusable, whichever comes first). In addition to providing design and site development at Falls Park West, the City of Sioux Falls will retain ownership of the venue and land as well as provide maintenance for the grounds. Though six Levitt venues are currently located throughout the United States, these sites primarily exist within or nearby larger metropolitan areas; however, Yazowski said that there were many positive 46  Chamber News | NOVEMBER 2016

and unique factors that Sioux Falls possesses that led to the Levitt Foundation’s decision to select our city. “The growth trajectory of Sioux Falls and the diversification of its population, combined with impressive local leadership and the community’s displayed commitment to create programming that will bring people of all backgrounds together, make Sioux Falls an ideal match for a Levitt Shell,” Yazowski said. “The Levitt Foundation is honored to partner with Sioux Falls and support the transformation of Falls Park West into a thriving community destination through the power of free, live music.” Though certainly needing to recognize the great deal of insight and effort undertaken to this point, for this type of a project to come together in the relatively seamless way that it has is a tribute to all stakeholders. “The national Levitt organization and the City of Sioux Falls have been fantastic partners. Both have taken a thoughtful and progressive approach to bringing this to Sioux Falls. We all appreciate how quickly Sioux Falls is growing and becoming increasingly diverse. This venue will provide a place for all residents to gather. It will also help Sioux Falls employers recruit and retain employees as Sioux Falls becomes an even more fun place to live.” Kirby said. City of Sioux Falls’ Parks and Recreation Director Don Kearney echoes the importance of cooperation, allowing the idea of Levitt Shell Sioux Falls to foster. “The partnership we have formed with the Levitt Foundation and Friends of Levitt Shell Sioux Falls has made this project a reality. Without this public/private partnership we would not be embarking on a project that very few cities across the United States can celebrate. The development of Falls Park West needed an anchor facility and we believe the Levitt Shell is the perfect choice.” Ultimately, we are all the benefactors for this special attraction—a sentiment Kirby affirms. “Levitt at the Falls will add yet another layer of excellence to our city,” Kirby said. “To offer this type of entertainment for our citizens and visitors alike will add to the economic vibrancy of downtown, bring more visitors to Sioux Falls and continue to make our city the envy of the region. It will be one of the most exciting things to happen in our community – and there have been a lot of them lately!”

MIND YOUR SMALL BUSINESS

Shop small on Small Business Saturday BY LAUREN FOSHEIM

Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce

The first Small Business Saturday took place in 2010. The mission was simple – Small Business Saturday encouraged people across the country to support small, local businesses during the holiday shopping season. In 2011, the United States Senate officially passed a resolution of support for Small Business Saturday. Small Business Saturday falls on the Saturday following Thanksgiving, and this year will be celebrated on November 26. Small businesses make up 62% (around 1,500 members) of the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce’s total membership of 2,200 members. We define Small Businesses as those organizations with ten or fewer employees, and the efforts of groups like the Chamber’s Small Business Council rally around serving those members.

UTILIZE SOCIAL MEDIA It may take a little time to get started, but utilizing social media platforms (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest) are great ways to help new potential customers find your business, and to keep current customers engaged. Social media helps you to tell your story, and puts a personal touch on who you are and what you’re about. People are in search of great products and services, but they also care about who they support. Images and posts you share on social media allow customers to become familiar with your company and your

story; it allows them the opportunity to build a relationship with you. This form of promotion lends itself well not only to retailers, but to any form of business with a product or service to sell.

ATTRACTING CUSTOMERS Buy-one-get-one free sales, sidewalk sales and other “Small Business Saturday” promotions are a great way to pique curiousity and to encourage people to shop at your business. According to shopsmall. com, nationwide in 2015, 95 million people shopped at small businesses on Small Business Saturday, and in 2014, an estimated $14.3 billion was spent. CVB HOSTS CHINESE TOUR OPERATORS The CVB played host to a Chinese Travel Delegation October 27-28. The familiarization tour included four individuals representing Chinese inbound tour operators who bring travelers to the USA from China. In 2015 the number of tourists from China to the United States was 2.67 million and China became the fourth largest visitor source to the USA. Mr. Jason Lu, founder and director of China Visit Tour USA led the group. He has over 20 years of experience working in the tourism industry with the last 10 specifically focusing on bringing tour groups to the USA. Ms. Cindy Hu, also a member of the delegation, concentrates on designing tour packages focused on in-bound travelers from China. Mr. Wenmin Jian, a media writer for Sichuan News and Publishing, and veteran photographer Mr. Jinzhong Dong accompanied the group. The CVB staff prepared a robust itinerary and escorted the group on a jam-packed day experiencing many of Sioux Falls’ attractions. The capstone of the day was a visit to Falls Park. The delegation left Sioux Falls armed with information and a clear understanding and knowledge of all Sioux Falls has to offer the Chinese group tour market and leisure traveler.

These partners made a commitment to assist our country in thanking and honoring the estimated 7.2 million living Vietnam Veterans and the families of all 9 million who served.

Authorized by Congress and on behalf of a grateful nation, communities such as Sioux Falls are now thanking and honoring Vietnam Veterans and their families for their service and sacrifices – just as Americans have done for Veterans of World War II, Korea, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Although perhaps 50 years late, it’s important to focus on this specific group of heroes!

2016 VETERANS DAY PROGRAM

Friday, Nov. 11, 10:30 a.m. Lincoln High School, 2900 S. Cliff Avenue Free and open to the public. For more information, contact Valerie at vwillson@siouxfalls.com or (605) 373-2010

With Vietnam Veterans being the largest group of living Veterans today, many of us are proud to say we have a brother or father or grandfather who served in Vietnam. As President Obama stated during the inaugural event, “And one of the most painful chapters in our history was Vietnam – most particularly, how we treated our troops who served there. You were often blamed for a war you didn’t start, when you should have been commended for serving your country with valor. You were sometimes blamed for misdeeds of a few, when the honorable service of the many should have been praised. You came home and sometimes were denigrated, when you should have been celebrated. It was a national shame, a disgrace that should have never happened. And that’s why here today we resolve that it will not happen again.” By presidential proclamation on May 25, 2012, the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War commemoration extends from Memorial Day 2012 through Veterans Day 2016. U.S. involvement in Vietnam slowly started with deployment of advisors in the early 1950s, grew through the early 1960s and expanded with the deployment of full combat units in July 1965. The last U.S. personnel were evacuated from Vietnam in April 1975. The commemoration recognizes those who served on active duty from November 1, 1955 – May 15, 1975 – regardless of duty station. All were called to serve. The Commemoration is providing partners such as the Sioux Falls VA, the Veterans Engagement Board, and several Veterans Service Organizations, Vietnam Veteran lapel pins as lasting mementos of the nation’s public thank you and the welcome home they have waited for so long. Each living Veteran who served from 1955 – 1975 is eligible to receive one lapel pin. As of September 2015, more than 8,000 local, state and federal agencies have become partners with the U.S. Vietnam War Commemoration – under the Secretary of Defense. These partners made a commitment to assist our country in thanking and honoring the estimated 7.2 million living Vietnam Veterans and the families of all 9 million who served. We look forward to you joining us for the annual Veterans Day program at Lincoln High School at 10:30 a.m. to honor Vietnam Veterans and all Veterans. HOW CAN THE WORKPLACE BE OPTIMIZED TO DELIVER ON WHAT BOTH ORGANIZATIONS AND THE PEOPLE WHO WORK FOR THEM NEED? The more employees feel a sense of control over where and how they work, the more engaged and satisfied they are with their workplace.

Having a range of spaces to accommodate different modes of work is key. Organizations that offer a broader range of spaces- for collaboration, socializing, focus, rejuvenation and privacy- tend to have more engaged employees. Providing employees with a greater sense of control over their physical environment and how they work is an opportunity to positively shape behaviors within the organization.
