MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

Maintaining momentum is key to our success In Sioux Falls we are truly in an enviable position, both regionally and nationally. As I look forward to the year ahead for our Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce and our community, I’m excited about the opportunities that lie ahead. More importantly, I’m confident that we have the vision and the leadership to make our community be whatever we want it to be.

DANA DYKHOUSE 2014-15 Chair of the Board

I’m confident that we have the vision and the leadership to make our community be whatever we want it to be.

I believe we have a responsibility, both to those who came before us and to those who will come after us, to continue to raise our expectations of where we are going and what we want to become. Our community is strong because our leaders knew how to dream big. You don’t have to look very far to see the seeds they planted that are now bearing fruit. We owe it to the next generation to continue that vision — and to add our own dreams to the mix, too. Our diverse economy has served us well in good times and in not-so-good times. Yet like nearly every other metro area in the country, we have a workforce challenge. Your Chamber of Commerce will be at the table as we continue to tackle this issue at both the regional and state levels. I don’t make any claims that we’ll solve this issue in the next 12 months, or that there’s a one-size-fits-all solution for Sioux Falls. I do know that we won’t turn a blind eye to this challenge and that we won’t be afraid to try new ideas. As in the past, our priorities are driven by the needs of our members. And membership remains one of our highest priorities. Growing our membership to reflect the growing community is important — as well as making sure our current members find value in their investment. We’ll continue to ask for your feedback as we prepare for the upcoming legislative session and as we study other issues that affect the business community. Our job is to maintain the momentum. I invite you to join me in this endeavor. I also invite you to join us in celebration in all that we’ve accomplished by attending our 108th Annual Meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 21. This year’s format will be different, too — it’s not every year that we hold a concert in a brand new facility as part of our annual meeting! Please invite everyone in your organization to be a part of our evening as we celebrate Sioux Falls at the premier event of the year. Contact the Chamber office to order your tickets.

Bob Hayes, Davenport, Evans, Hurwitz & Smith, spoke to YPN members about his career during the popular “A Seat at the Table” program. The September Membership Mixer was hosted by LifeScape, formerly known as Children’s Care Hospital & School and South Dakota Achieve. More than 500 people attended the ribbon cutting for the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center; in addition to the local media covering the historical event, members of the community also snapped photos for posterity — via cell phone and tablet.

BUSINESS ADVOCACY

Be informed and vote on Nov. 4 Chamber Board takes positions on Any Willing Provider, Minimum Wage BY MIKE LYNCH

Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce

This year, the right to vote occurs on Tuesday, Nov. 4, at which time those who will make decisions at the local, state and national level will be elected. In addition, voters will decide on three statewide ballot issues: Any Willing Provider (Initiated Measure 17), Minimum Wage (Initiated Measure 18) and the Authorization of Roulette, Keno and Craps in the City of Deadwood (Constitutional Amendment Q). The Sioux Falls Area Chamber did not research or take a position on the Deadwood gaming issue, but the Chamber did conduct extensive research on IM 17 and IM 18 which led to the formation of issue briefs. These briefs are designed to provide clear, substantive and objective information to Chamber

members. The Chamber Board emphasizes the importance of our members learning about the specifics of these measures and their potential impact. Following is more information about IM 17 and IM 18 and the Chamber’s position on each:

IM 17 — “ANY WILLING PROVIDER” Any Willing Provider (AWP) laws require a health insurance company to accept any qualified provider who is willing to accept its terms and conditions. Though these laws do not require health insurance companies to contract with all providers, they do require health insurance companies to explicitly state evaluation criteria and ensure “due process” for providers who wish to contract with them. South Dakota does not currently have a comprehensive AWP law, but it does have a freedom of choice requirement for pharmacy services (SDCL 58-18-37). The law states that group health insurance policies may not refuse to accept licensed pharmacies/pharmacists as participating providers if they agree to the same terms and conditions offered to other providers of pharmacy services under the policy.

32  Chamber News | OCTOBER 2014

According to the Attorney General’s statement, IM 17 would require “that these insurers list all health care providers who are willing, qualified and meet the conditions for participation established by the insurer.” Proponents for passing IM 17 have stated that AWP allows the insured to retain their doctor without having to pay higher out-ofnetwork costs if an employer decides to switch insurance companies and gives them a choice of where they are treated and which doctor they may use. Opponents have stated that insurance rates would escalate under AWP implementation and may lead to a reduced enrollment in health plans as insurance companies lose the cost saving advantages of projected volume in negotiating lower rates with providers. Opponents believe that AWP is unnecessary because those who are willing to pay more for additional provider choices already have that option. The Chamber’s Board of Directors took a position to oppose IM 17, with the following rationale: “The Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce is a proponent of measures that help its members provide health insurance coverage to their employees and make employer coverage as affordable and accessible as possible. Healthcare policy decisions regarding mandates must be dealt with after careful consideration of all material factors so that the impact of such mandates can be predicted with some certainty. The Chamber Board is concerned that passage of IM17 will result in increased health insurance costs for employers and their employees.” The South Dakota Chamber of Commerce & Industry is opposing IM 17 and is leading the effort to defeat the measure.

IM 18 — “MINIMUM WAGE” South Dakotans will also decide whether or not to raise the minimum wage, currently set at $7.25 an hour. If IM 18 passes, this amount would increase to $8.50 per hour and for tipped employees, it would raise the

hourly wage to 50 percent of the minimum wage ($4.25). If enacted, proposed changes would take effect beginning Jan. 1, 2015. The last time South Dakota raised the minimum wage was during the 2007 legislative session in a three-step process with 2009 being the final year. IM 18 would require automatic wage indexing increases each year depending on changes in the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which opponents feel provides no opportunity for business to control wage costs in the future and makes it difficult to grow business, hire new employees and increase benefits of current employees. Proponents believe that an increase to the minimum wage will provide workers with more money that they will spend on things their families need every day. Though supporters say adjusting the minimum wage would promote economic fairness, opponents feel this is just another government mandate that denies the marketplace from determining wages. The Chamber Board of Directors took a position to oppose IM 18, with the following rationale: “We encourage employers to pay fair and competitive wages and believe they are in the best position to determine wage rates based on market conditions. Tying the minimum wage to automatic annual increases based on the CPI is not public policy we support as it does not allow for decision-making based on business conditions.” The South Dakota Retailers Association is leading efforts to defeat IM 18 and the South Dakota Chamber of Commerce & Industry has also taken a position to oppose IM 18. For more detailed information on the issue briefs and position statements go to siouxfallschamber.com under the Advocacy tab.

Sioux Falls is known as a city that gets things done. Think back some years to the time when the Sioux Falls Arena was built... or the Sioux Falls Regional Airport... or to when Falls Park became a destination for residents and visitors alike... or when SculptureWalk became a reality... or when Sioux Falls became known as a great host city for soccer, softball and basketball tournaments and conventions and events. Each and every one of these projects, plus hundreds more, all happened because so many people came together as partners. And now, we continue that tradition of getting things done through partnership. Our most recent example is the announcement that Sioux Falls will host the LPGA Symetra Tour in September 2015. The CVB first introduced Sioux Falls to the LPGA at a trade show about 18 months ago. Communication continued and we hosted members of their leadership group in Sioux Falls a few months ago for what we in the CVB world call a “site visit,” a time when we bring people to the city and show them all the reasons why they should bring their business here — it’s really the one chance we have to “sell” them on the exceptional community assets we have! We always encourage site visits because there’s never a doubt in our minds that once we get the decisionmakers here they’ll feel the greatness of this city just like we all do! The LPGA definitely liked what they saw and chose to bring a Symetra Tour here (see more details about the tournament on page 40). In order to be chosen, the CVB had to commit to finding a local individual or organization who would step up and partner with the CVB and LPGA to make the event happen. With one short phone call, Tom Walsh Sr., President of GreatLIFE, enthusiastically agreed to that commitment. Since that phone call Tom and his partners have been off and running in putting together what promises to be a high-level, hospitalitydriven event that will place Sioux Falls on an international golf level unlike we’ve ever seen! And since the announcement, phones have been ringing from Sioux Falls residents who would like to volunteer at the event. Others are offering to be host families. Others are simply asking how they can help. Offers to partner are why this event is going to be such a win-win!

Have you ever noticed all the softball and soccer participants around town in the summertime? Sioux Falls People for Youth is the organization responsible for making those softball tournaments happen. The CVB has the opportunity to partner with them to travel to compete for the national tournaments, but this group does all the hard work in planning and executing the tournaments. And the soccer tournaments — Dakota Alliance Soccer Club is the group who makes all the soccer tournaments happen. The CVB partners with them to compete for the tournaments, but like the softball people, the soccer people do the hard work to make things happen. Both these organizations partner with businesses and individuals throughout Sioux Falls to make their tournaments the huge successes they are… it’s all about the partnerships. Do you remember last year when Sioux Falls hosted the national convention of the Enlisted Association of the National Guard of the United States (EANGUS) or just recently when the Midwest Shrine held their 2014 Midwest Shrine Association Convention here? The local organizations’ partnerships with the CVB and Sioux Falls businesses made these two conventions proud successes — so many people partnered in working hard on details, sponsorships and rolling out the red carpet for the guests… once again, partnerships! And take a look at SculptureWalk, a project that has placed the arts in Sioux Falls into national recognition. Beginning with Jim Clark’s creative genius and ability to build partnerships, SculptureWalk has grown into one of our city’s “must sees.” The partnerships that have supported this project are another win-win for Sioux Falls! Remember that first work experience? At the recent Workforce Summits held in Sioux Falls and across the state, the question of how young students learn about careers was one of the many topics of interest among participants. Since the first 18 years of my career were spent in retail, I know that thousands of high school teens got their first work experience with Sunshine Food Markets during that time.

... invitations to explore ... train ... work with tools of the trade ... are plentiful!

Today, as then, food and clothing and general merchandise retailers, restaurants and recreational venues of every sort are still giving teens their first work experience. These are employers who continue to work with teens to reinforce the values of a good effort, of achieving higher levels of performance, the importance of teamwork, meeting the expectations of employers and customers, assuming personal responsibility and so much more — lessons that will last them a lifetime. Although teens are exposed to just a few industries and careers through direct employment, they are, as students, introduced to the broad spectrum of career path options throughout their school years. Appropriate tools and activities are provided at each grade level as part of the district’s career development plan. They are designed to expand career awareness and encourage exploration, as well as help each student discover his/her own interests and abilities. One of the educational tools used in middle and high school classrooms across the state today is SD MyLife. Students are introduced to the SD MyLife website (sdmylife.com) and the wealth of information about industries and careers that is featured there. For each career path (referred to as career clusters), the site informs students and parents what training may be required, where (in the state and region) that training and education is offered, and what completion of that education or training may consist of in terms of time and cost. Check out sdmylife.com and see how your industry and occupations are represented there. If you have suggestions to improve or enhance this tool I know the MyLife representatives would appreciate hearing from you. Perhaps you could help them improve and enhance the tool for future use. Career options are also introduced and often reinforced through programs like Junior Achievement, ShadowED, career days, Career & Technical education coursework, guest speakers, extra-curricular activities, tours, camps … and the list goes on. The invitations to explore, to train, to work with tools of the trade, to ask an expert and to help students understand how their education is preparing them for careers in any industry are plentiful! As we look for even more ways to enhance career education of our students going forward, it is important to know that we will be building on an already strong foundation. Thank you to all the first work experience employers in our community and to the educators and volunteers that continue to help our students develop the work and life skills they will need for a successful future. MEMBER’S VOICE

Stocks vs. rental property: A problem or a solution? A common objection we hear from would-be property investors is, “Why should I invest in rental property verses the stock market?” The underlying objection assumes rental property takes more work to manage and produces worst returns than stocks. So why do savvy investors add real estate to their portfolios? JOSH KATTENBERG Real Property Management Express

Income real estate offers four financial benefits while stocks offer only one or two.

Besides the obvious perk of diversifying their portfolio, income real estate offers four financial benefits while stocks offer only one or two. Income: Income is the rent left over after expenses and debt service have been paid. We also call this benefit Cash Flow. Some but not all stocks offer this benefit in the form of dividends. Principle Reduction: When an investor uses leverage, i.e. a loan to purchase a property, a portion of the monthly mortgage payment goes toward paying the interest and part goes toward the equity. Homeowners are familiar with this concept. However, with rental property, the tenant is making the mortgage payment. The tenant buys the building for the investor! How cool is that? When was the last time you heard of someone buying stock for the investor? Depreciation: Tax benefits are perhaps one of the least understood benefits of owning rental property, but perhaps one of the most powerful tools for rental property investors. At the risk of oversimplifying an IRS tax law, depreciation (also known as cost recovery) allows the investor to claim a loss even though they made money on the property. The investor puts money in his or her checking account, but then gets to tell the IRS they lost money. Each situation is different, but sometimes excess depreciation from the rental property can even decrease the taxes

an investor owes on the income from their job. Let’s see a stock do that! Over time, depreciation “wears out” until the building is completely depreciated and the investor no longer receives the tax benefit. What to do? The investor can use a 1031 exchange to sell the property and buy a different property without paying capital gains tax. The IRS allows brand new fresh depreciation on the second property again allowing the investors to put money in their pocket without paying tax on the income. As with any tax-related issue, it is always more complicated than it first appears and you should consult with your accountant or attorney before making any decisions. Appreciation: Most people understand that appreciation is when you get to sell an asset for more that you paid for it. It is the main benefit investors get from a stock. As a general rule, long term real estate appreciation values will keep pace with inflation. Obviously short-term rates could be higher or lower depending upon the economy. What about the objection that rental property is more work than owning a stock? First, if the tenant is buying the property for you, would it kill you to take their phone call? Second, if you hire a property manager you don’t even have to take the phone call. In addition, a good manager will actually increase your rate of return even after paying the management fee. How is this possible? Time is money in rentals. A manager who can shave off two weeks between tenant turnover, is able to resolve a tenant delinquency quickly, or is able to negotiate better maintenance rates can quickly pay for themselves. Stocks verses Rental Property is not an either/or problem. It is a both/and solution. Josh Kattenberg is the owner of Real Property Management Express and the author of the best selling book Rental Property Success: Horror Stories, Insider Secrets and Disciplines of Successful Rental Property Owners.

LPGA Symetra Tour coming to South Dakota in 2015 The Sioux Falls GreatLIFE Challenge, which will be held Sept. 3-6, 2015 at Willow Run Golf Course, is part of The Symetra Tour, the Road to the LPGA. The Sioux Falls GreatLIFE Challenge will be the first Symetra Tour event in South Dakota in the 35-year history of the Tour. The Symetra Tour serves as a proving ground for professional golfers to reach the LPGA Tour. The top-10 on the year-end Volvik Race for the Card money list earn their LPGA Tour cards. The idea for the Sioux Falls GreatLIFE Challenge event was born when the Sioux Falls Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) first made contact with LPGA representatives in 2013 and again in 2014 at the National Association of Sports Commission (NASC) Trade Show. The CVB invited the LPGA leadership to Sioux Falls for a site visit in June 2014 as part of the bureau’s “See For Free” marketing program to secure new business to Sioux Falls. The tournament will feature a 72-hole stroke play format with a cut after second-round play Friday, Sept. 4. The final-round will be contested on Sunday, Sept. 6. The Sioux Falls GreatLIFE Challenge is one of just four 72-hole events currently scheduled for 2015.

A press conference to announce the LPGA Symetra Tour coming to Sioux Falls was held in September. Pictured are Mike Malaska, GreatLife Malaska; Professional golfer and South Dakota native Kim Kaufman; Teri Schmidt, Sioux Falls CVB; Tom Walsh, Sr., Dakota King dba Burger King and GreatLife Malaska and Burger King; and Mike Nichols, Symetra Tour.

“We’re excited to bring our talented professional golfers to South Dakota for the very first time,” said Mike Nichols, Chief Business Officer of the Symetra Tour. “Through the vision of Tom and his team at GreatLIFE as well as the staff at the CVB, I am confident that this event will be one of the most successful on our Tour in year one.”

She graduated from the Symetra Tour to the LPGA Tour in 2014 and currently ranks 50th on the LPGA Tour official money list.

“As a proud South Dakota native and someone that grew up playing junior golf in the state, I am ecstatic that the Symetra Tour is coming to Willow Run for the Sioux Falls GreatLIFE Challenge,” said Kim Kaufman, a six-time South Dakota Golf Association Junior Champion and four-time All State selection at Clark High School. “The Symetra Tour was a great training ground for me to prepare

Community Impact Grants will be awarded for seed money to start-up new programs. Since 2003, United Way has awarded more than $2 million in grant funds to area non-profits. Sioux Falls Seminary, Compassion Child Care partner on Pettigrew Heights house In an effort to expand the reach and opportunities for service to the community, Sioux Falls Seminary is partnering with Compassion Child Care to provide affordable housing and care to single mothers. Through the newly formed partnership, Sioux Falls Seminary will lease its property at the corner of 12th Street and Summit Avenue to Compassion Child Care for the purpose of providing affordable housing, restoration and rejuvenation to single mothers. Since 2008, the property housed seminary students who were engaged in community development work. During that period of time, Sioux Falls Seminary students interacted with Pettigrew Heights residents through Bible studies, community meals, relationships with the homeless, and community gardening urban agriculture initiatives. Compassion Child Care created the program to more fully minister to whole families; it also addresses the growing problem for safe and affordable housing in the community. The property will accommodate up to five single mothers. Each will have their own quarters in addition to a shared kitchen and living spaces. An on-site resident assistant couple will offer support and encouragement to tenants. The women tenants will also gain life skills and build financial security through the housing program.

“We are extremely grateful for this opportunity to continue our mission of expressing God’s compassion to families. We believe providing this housing opportunity will help us become more family focused,” said Rich Merkouris, board member for Compassion Child Care. “Sioux Falls Seminary is a great partner. They have a passion for community development as demonstrated by their commitment to training up leaders who are focused on building God’s kingdom.” Renovations are currently underway at the Summit House building, located at 333 S. Summit Ave. with hopes of mothers moving in mid to late October. The partnership is also opening up possibilities for Sioux Falls Seminary. In the future, seminary students will have the opportunity to minister to and counsel mothers at the site giving students first-hand experience in community development and the care of single mothers and children. “Sioux Falls Seminary is excited about this partnership. God calls all of us to participate in the work he is doing, and partnerships like this enable people and institutions to serve in unique and powerful ways,” said Greg Henson, President of Sioux Falls Seminary. “Compassion Child Care is a great partner, and we look forward to embarking on this journey together.”

Form + Fashion Meets Function show Oct. 17 The Institute of Design & Technology of South Dakota (IDTSD) will present a collaboration of student fashion and interior creations at their annual Form + Fashion Meets Function event Oct. 17 at the Sioux Falls Convention Center as part of the annual expo for her. The event begins with a silent auction at 6 p.m. and the runway show at 8 p.m. The Form + Fashion Meets Function will feature collaborations of fashion and interior, and the design students’ portfolios will be on display all through the two-day expo. For the third year, the Institute of Design & Technology of South Dakota has hosted special guest design mentors from the Lifetime Network show Project Runway.

These designers have supported IDTSD fundraising efforts by presenting their runway collections as the evening’s grand finale. This year two successful and popular designers from the most recent seasons will be at the show: Season 12 finalist Helen Castillo and Season 11 Winner Michelle Lesniak. Both showed their winning collections in 2013 at NYC Lincoln Center Fashion Week. Through the IDTSD connection with designer Diane Von Furstenberg and Kravet textiles, every student has the opportunity to create a project with one of her fabrics for the show, a once-in-a-life-time collaboration not to be missed. Von Furstenberg is renowned for her colorful palette in fabric patterns and is celebrating the 40th

anniversary of her iconic wrap dress. This is a first time runway debut of the newly launched fabrics from the Diane Von Furstenberg for Kravet Collections, including a “Retro-show” of her iconic fashions. All colors in her new palette will be in the runway show. The Institute of Design & Technology of South Dakota has been preparing traditional and non-traditional students for entrepreneurial design careers. All proceeds from the event and silent auction supports programming for summer design camps, along with scholarship assistance for full-time programs.

Volunteers needed for downtown walk audits Want to enjoy the great outdoors while volunteering for a fun event? Live Well Sioux Falls and partners will conduct two Downtown Walk Audits — one this fall and one during the winter. What is included in a walk audit? Participants will evaluate and examine the walking and biking environment; identify concerns for pedestrians and bicyclists

related to safety, access, comfort and convenience of the environment; and identify alternatives or solutions to improve walking and bicycling in the downtown area. The Fall Walk Audit will be held Oct. 8 from 1-4 p.m. This includes a brief training session, the walk and a summary conversation. An evening walk will be scheduled for Oct. 9 if there is enough interest. If you

are interested in volunteering, please email livewell@siouxfalls.org with your contact information and whether you are interested in the Oct. 8 daytime walk, Oct. 9 evening walk, or both.

YPN kicks off Policy & A Pint with IM 17 discussion The Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce strives to educate its members on issues of importance to the business community. The Chamber regularly studies issues in order to share that information and may sometimes take positions on those issues. In the upcoming November general election, the Chamber thoroughly researched two of the three issues on the ballot: Initiated Measure 17 (Any Willing Provider) and Initiated Measure 18 (Minimum Wage) and the Board of Directors opted to oppose both measures. You can read more about

those issues on pg. 32 of this issue as well as read the issue briefs online at siouxfallschamber.com. Educating members about these issues is still a priority. The Chamber’s Young Professionals Network is hosting a discussion about IM 17 on Monday, Oct. 6 from 5:30-7 p.m. at Icon Lounge, 402 N. Main Ave. The event, called “Policy & A Pint,” will feature a representative from both sides of the AWP issue and will be moderated by Jonathan Ellis, Argus Leader Media. This will not be a debate, but more of a discussion

of the issue in a casual atmosphere. If this event is well-received, the YPN intends to hold additional discussions on policy issues in the future using the same format. All Chamber members and YPN members are encouraged to attend. The event is free and will have complimentary hors d’ouevres; the pints are on your own. For more information, contact YPN Manager Lauren Fosheim at lfosheim@siouxfalls.com or (605) 373-2009.

The “Plan to Win” promotion asked potential visitors to build their dream trip or itinerary to Sioux Falls and share it on Facebook in order to win it. Targeted locations included: Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; Chicago suburbs; Kansas City; and Madison, Milwaukee, La Crosse and Eau Claire, Wis. Online tactics included display ads, remarketing, Facebook, Twitter and direct email, which resulted in more than 18.7 million total impressions. Part of the gained impressions were far more valuable than traditional advertising because they were a result of friends’ interactions and “word of mouth” peer recommendations. A matching grant provided by the South Dakota Department of Tourism helped the CVB implement the “Premier Events Concert Contest” promotion. Participants were asked to lip-sync to a Jason Aldean, Cher or Eric Church song, post the video to YouTube and then share the video with their friends to win a concert travel package to Sioux Falls. The campaign goals were to create awareness and generate buzz about the new Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in targeted markets within a 350-mile radius of Sioux Falls. Online tactics resulted in total impressions of more than 6 million people. Each August hundreds of thousands of bikers make their way across South Dakota to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The CVB used new messaging via advertising to encourage bikers to enjoy the “Beauty of the Ride” at Falls Park and to redeem a free gift. Online tactics were implemented prior to the Sturgis Rally to encourage visitors to stop at the Falls Park Visitors Information Center and mention “Beauty of the Ride” and present an out-of-state driver’s license to receive a gift valued at $10. The campaign generated more than 670,000 impressions and approximately 22 percent of the visitors to the site went on to view “places to stay” and “things to do.” Each of these campaigns presented tremendous success with the goals set forth to achieve. Certain aspects of each campaign will continue to be a part of future marketing and branding efforts of the Sioux Falls CVB. Thank you to the following partners who made these promotions possible: South Dakota Department of Tourism, SMG/Denny Sanford PREMIER Center, Hampton Inn, Ramada Inn Hotel and Suites, ClubHouse Hotel and Suites, Hilton Garden Inn Downtown, A Taste of the Big Apple, Catfish Bay, Wild Water West Waterpark, Chedd’s Gourmet Grilled Cheese, All Day Café and Goodnight Bar, and Great Plains Zoo and Delbridge Museum of Natural History.

DTSF SEEKS ENTRANTS FOR 23RD ANNUAL PARADE OF LIGHTS

OPPORTUNITY FOR NEW INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS

Businesses, families, marching bands, drumlines or other groups are invited to participate in the 23rd Annual Parade of Lights presented by CenturyLink. It will be held on Friday, Nov. 28. This is a great team-building opportunity to show off your creativity.

Is your company interested in valuable face time with some of the top international travel companies in the world? If so, the Sioux Falls Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) invites you to register for Rocky Mountain International Roundup and take advantage of a sponsorship package.

Spectators of all ages will line the streets of historic downtown to enjoy the sights and sounds of the holidays through floats, drumlines, and of course — Santa! For the past 22 years, the parade has attracted an audience of thousands who have reveled in the coming joy of the season. The Parade of Lights has become one of the most largely attended events in South Dakota, and we invite you to be part of the 23rd year of this growing holiday tradition.

Sioux Falls has been selected as host city for the 2015 Rocky Mountain International Roundup, held April 12-16, 2015. This is the first time the event will be hosted in Sioux Falls and the largest single hosting of international tour operators in the history of the city. The event will bring nearly 200 tour operators and suppliers from Germany, Switzerland, Australia, United Kingdom, France, New Zealand, Belgium, Italy, Netherlands and Nordic countries.

The parade is an excellent opportunity for your business, organization, church group, or family and friends to showcase your creativity as you prepare for the holiday season. Your float will be seen by a multitude of people throughout the region, and your participation will make a direct and valuable impact towards the spirit of the evening. We are expecting a diverse range of floats and encourage your unique talent in creating a one-of-a-kind entry!

Hosting Rocky Mountain International Roundup will give Sioux Falls the opportunity to showcase the city to as many as 45 targeted international tour operator companies and US-based receptive tour operators as well as regional, state and local tourism professionals who will be in the community conducting business. Focus will be on the community’s attractions and activities, as well as facilities, restaurants and retail.

Parade of Lights entries will compete for five distinguished awards, judged by a panel of community leaders. Judging during the parade will take place in front of the Orpheum Theatre. Categories being judged are as follows: CenturyLink Best Use of Lights: given to the float that shows the most ingenuity and engineering in light usage and special effects for visual appeal; Best Workmanship: given to the float that displays outstanding craftsmanship, neatness, attention to detail, overall design and usage of color and materials; Spirit of Sioux Falls: for the float exhibiting the most public appeal and charm, most creatively pleasing the crowd; Mayor’s Choice: given to the personal favorite of Sioux Falls Mayor Mike Huether (pending availability); and Downtown Sioux Falls Award: goes to the favorite of the DTSF Board of Directors.

RMI’s annual Roundup provides an opportunity for businesses, destinations and attractions in the four-state region of Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming to meet face-to-face with international tour operators who specifically want to do business in this region. Local suppliers meet one-on-one with tour operators in 10-minute appointments during which real business is conducted.

Winners will receive a trophy commemorating the achievement plus recognition from the local media and community. The Holiday Inn City Centre (100 E. 8th St.) is hosting the award ceremony immediately following the parade. Admission to the party is free, and complimentary cookies and hot apple cider will be provided for all those participating. All entry registration forms and preliminary descriptions must be received by Downtown Sioux Falls, Inc. (DTSF) by Thursday, Oct. 30, 2014 at 5 p.m. A non-refundable entry fee of $45 must accompany the registration form. There is no participation cost for Downtown Sioux Falls, Inc. members. Registration applications received after October 30, 2014 may or may not be considered for entrance and will incur an additional $20 late fee. A maximum of 60 entries will be accepted.

FIVE QUESTIONS

Five questions is a monthly feature on a Chamber volunteer, Chamber member or staff member. Want to be featured here? Call (605) 336-1620.

Five questions with DeeAnn Konrad DeeAnn Konrad is the Community Relations Supervisor with the Sioux Falls School District. She also chairs the Chamber’s Education & Workforce Development Committee.

WHAT IS ONE OF SIOUX FALLS’ BEST-KEPT SECRETS?

DEEANN KONRAD

Its public schools, of course! Public education is often an easy target for critics. Just because each of us has gone through school — whether recently or 20 or 50 years ago and whether here or in another community or state — we take the liberty of comparing the current state of education to the education we received as children. News flash! NOTHING in the entire world — except maybe Tootsie Pop suckers — is the same as it was when we were kids! EVERYTHING has changed! And, shouldn’t we be grateful it has? Do we really want our kids to attend one-room school houses, without electricity or running water with a teacher who is trying to offer instruction in eight grades at the same time? The truth is, public education has never been stronger. It has never before produced the type of well-rounded students who possess such worldly knowledge and problem-solving skills. Sioux Falls’ Public Schools aren’t just doing OK. They’re doing awesome!

Sioux Falls School District

WHAT HAVE YOU OR YOUR EMPLOYER GAINED FROM BEING A CHAMBER MEMBER? Serving as a Chair for the Education and Workforce Development Committee (formerly known as the Business Education Networking Committee) has given me the opportunity to network with many of Sioux Falls’ most influential leaders. I love having the opportunity to serve the community in a broader role along with those who have similar passions.

DESCRIBE SIOUX FALLS IN THREE WORDS. Progressive Inviting Safe

WHAT TECHNOLOGY TOOL OR APP COULD YOU NOT LIVE WITHOUT? The Sioux Falls School District app, of course! It’s a one-stop location for students, parents and community members to stay current with all of the great things going on in their public schools! Download it today! (This question is a PR person’s dream!)

WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU EVER RECEIVED? When speaking to a group: No one else in the room knows as much as you do on the topic at that particular moment. Own it. Present with confidence. And, walk out of there leaving no doubt that YOU are the expert!

FROM THE ARCHIVES

As a membership organization with a history spanning more than a century, the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce has influenced progress across the community in a number of ways throughout the decades.

Everything old is new again: Chamber News and Greater Sioux Falls The Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce mission is to represent its members by advancing and promoting the economic health and quality of life of the region. Using a variety of communication vehicles, the Chamber conveys the benefits of Chamber membership, as well as living and working in the Sioux Falls area. This issue of Chamber News marks the first issue of the 50th year and the second in the revamped magazine format (which debuted with the September 2014 issue). However, this isn’t the first time the Chamber of Commerce has utilized this format to tell stories about Chamber members, to highlight Chamber and community activities

or to provide a return on investment to Chamber members. The tools used to share news with members have changed and improved over the years, but the same basic message of promoting Sioux Falls as an excellent place to live, work and raise a family has remained consistent. Much like the goal of the current Chamber News, previous publications (called the Greater Sioux Falls magazine) were also designed to be a sales tool for the community. The information published in both publications is a reflection of the community and the Chamber’s efforts to help Sioux Falls put its best foot forward — whether promoting to visitors or potential businesses.
