MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

Message from the Chair It is hard for me to believe that this is my last edition of Chamber News as your board chair. What a year it has been. My sincere thanks to each of you for your support and dedication to the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce, its more than 2,200 members and the 87,000 employees we represent to ensure the best business environment possible. It certainly has been a year of transition.

DAVE KAPASKA, D.O. 2016-17 Chair of the Board

Thanks for allowing me the opportunity and honor to serve with you

First, Evan Nolte retired as Chamber President/CEO after 38 years of dedicated service. After an intensive national search, Jason Ball was chosen to be our new leader. He is off to a great start – engaging staff and members throughout this amazing community. We are in a great position for the challenges ahead. Please mark your calendars for the Chamber Annual Meeting to be held Oct. 24 at the Sioux Falls Convention Center. It will be a great night to celebrate our success as a Chamber and to welcome our new Chair of the Board for 2017-18, Steve Van Buskirk, Van Buskirk Companies. Workforce has been a major focus this year. In the current environment, how do we ensure that every business in our area can attract great employees for their needs? In addition, in order to attract new businesses, it is essential that we demonstrate workforce potential that can meet future needs. The success of Forward Sioux Falls, securing the first tenant in Foundation Park and the continued record building growth throughout the Sioux Falls area challenges each of us to maximize the potential of every citizen to contribute fully to these new opportunities. Diversity, immigration, behavioral health, addictions, educational opportunities for all, mentorship, encouragement of the trades and many more issues must be addressed in order for us to continue our success. The Chamber is working alongside many people and organizations – Sioux Falls Thrive, city and county leadership, social service providers, Sioux Falls Public Schools and Sioux Empire United Way, among others. All are focusing on the future of our people and their ability to contribute fully to our economy and their own prosperity. Thanks to each of you for your support. Thank you to each of you members, our Board, Diplomats, Ambassadors, committee members and Chamber staff for your passion and dedication in assisting this chamber to support and maximize the business opportunities in the Sioux Falls area. Thanks for allowing me the opportunity and honor to serve with you this past year. The future of Sioux Falls is very bright. God Bless,

Accelerating Entrepreneurship Start-ups get a boost from investments by local businesses

COVER STORY

Sioux Falls is recognized nationally as a great place for business. The city regularly receives recognition on national lists that consider factors such as job growth, cost of living, income and economic growth, education levels and more. In 2016, Forbes named Sioux Falls second best small metro for business and careers and MoneyRates ranked it as the seventh best city for young entrepreneurs. These accolades, among others, point to an environment in Sioux Falls that fosters entrepreneurship. In many respects, the start-up community is thriving. Yet, there remains room for improvement. Among local business owners and entrepreneurs, it is commonly agreed that Sioux Falls has two main gaps in the start-up community: lack of access to early stage capital and a lack of mentorship and support programs. The Zeal Center for Entrepreneurship’s’ Growth Accelerator program is one attempt to stand in that gap and work toward meeting those needs. The Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce and the Sioux Falls Development Foundation, through their joint venture partnership Forward Sioux Falls, established Zeal in 2002 as the South Dakota Business and Technology Center (SDTBC). Zeal’s ecosystem of entrepreneurship brings the area’s most successful entrepreneurs and business leaders together with universities, venture capital sources and civic and government agencies to increase the speed to launch and success rate of early-stage companies. Zeal ran its first accelerator program in 2009. The program was successful and several classes of start-ups took advantage of the opportunity for growth. Twenty-six companies completed the accelerator during the first six programs, and twenty of those companies were still in business in 2015 – an impressive program success rate of 77 percent. Those results were a sign of the positive impact the accelerator was having on the community. But, just as the entrepreneurs served by Zeal are constantly looking for ways to tweak and improve their business model, Zeal leadership saw opportunities for improvement in the accelerator program model. The original iteration of the accelerator accepted companies at all stages of business, up to 10 companies at a time. That program did not provide capital for the start-ups. The revised model, renamed the Growth Accelerator, narrows its focus to specifically seeking early-stage companies with proven customers and sales. In addition, only four start-ups at a time are accepted to the program. Limiting the number of businesses allows for funding and more focused resources for the participants – a change Ryan Oines believes will make the accelerator even more successful.

WE BELIEVE ZEAL PROVIDES SUPPORT AND SERVICES THAT ARE VITAL TO THE NEXT GENERATION OF SUCCESSFUL SIOUX FALLS BUSINESSES. The Accelerator program is an additional step towards fostering the entrepreneurial community in Sioux Falls, and we are excited to contribute our legal expertise in support of those efforts.

—Stephanie Kunkel,

Business Development and Marketing Director, Woods, Fuller, Shultz & Smith P.C.

The Growth Accelerator is a 12-week, competitive application program positioned to accelerate the growth of early-stage companies. Selected participants have access to: • $20,000 seed money • Mentorship and coaching from Zeal entrepreneurs-in-residence and professional partners • Branding and marketing strategy development from Lawrence & Schiller • Access to the E@Z Co-working space sponsored by Interstate Office Products • Opportunity to present a pitch to investors to secure funding

Oines has worked with multiple start-up companies, including three different businesses that were tenants at Zeal. He served as Entrepreneur-in-Residence with Zeal prior to taking on his current role as Interim Vice President at Zeal. He said the goal of the Growth Accelerator is to create a broader network that includes entrepreneurs and the local business community. “As the network grows, there will be more depth of opportunities and resources – ideally creating a cohesive environment that will continue to serve future entrepreneurs.” The accelerator supports entrepreneurs by connecting earlystage companies with resources within the community that can help them scale their company. Participants in this eighth program have access to $20,000 in seed funding, mentorship and coaching from professional partners and Zeal entrepreneurs-in-residence, branding and marketing strategy development from Lawrence & Schiller and access to the E@Z Co-working space sponsored by Interstate Office Products. The intensive program runs for 12 weeks, including a oneday kickoff event and five bi-weekly sessions. The objective of the program is for each participant to develop a strategic, scalable plan to grow revenue and/or increase capacity. The program will culminate with a presentation pitch to potential investors to secure funding for the strategy developed during the accelerator program. Zeal has chosen a convertible note as the investment vehicle for this year’s Accelerator participants. This gives the entrepreneur the option of repayment as a loan or converting

the initial amount invested by Zeal into equity or ownership within the company. The goal is to help fund the early-stage company but not require that Zeal be a stakeholder if the resources are in place to pay off the investment in the form of a loan. This approach gives the entrepreneur options. It also allows the opportunity for Zeal to invest in the sustainability of the accelerator program for the future. There is no doubt the seed money is an attractive piece of the Growth Accelerator. But almost all involved agree that the resources, mentorship and support offered to participants are equally – if not more – valuable elements of the program. Alex Guggenberger is the co-founder of Jobiki and a current accelerator participant. He said, “Being a young company with young co-founders, we were really looking forward to the intangible resources. The mentorships, teaching and

guidance through the process of building Jobiki has made an amazing difference and we are hoping it continues as we move further along.” Fellow entrepreneur Brad Hartzler with Gravana agrees. “Already we have built amazing connections and relationships with others in the local entrepreneurial scene. We hope to take away a strong marketing strategy and a more focused business plan.” The Growth Accelerator is sponsored through partnerships with The First National Bank in Sioux Falls, Eide Bailly LLP, Lawrence & Schiller, Inc. and Woods, Fuller, Schultz & Smith P.C. Each company is not only providing program funding, but also supporting the entrepreneurs by offering expert advice and business resources.

I think there is still a lack of overall understanding of what is really happening in the entrepreneur community in Sioux Falls. It is not that the broader business community doesn’t want to know, they are just busy with their own work.

One valuable element of the accelerator program is connecting entrepreneurs to mentorship and coaching opportunities in the broader business community. Keith Severson, Partner at Eide Bailly, and Gabrielle Spangler, Entrepreneurin-Residence at Zeal, participated in a recent session alongside start-up founders Alex Guggenberger and Brad Hartzler.

“The financial and in-kind investment each of these partners has chosen to make contributes greatly to the overall potential success of the start-ups,” said Oines. “By sharing their expertise, industry experience and lessons learned – and even offering introductions to potential customers – these companies are supporting our local entrepreneurs.” Oines notes that Zeal partners are choosing to invest their time and money without the expectation of a direct return. “These companies are genuinely excited to be part of the growth of this community.” Eide Bailly has a history of partnering with Zeal. Keith Severson, a partner at Eide Bailly, previously served as a board member and assisted in the transition from SDTBC to Zeal. He calls the Growth Accelerator a critical component in the development of Sioux Falls’ entrepreneurial community. Severson said, “For me, just being able to participate in the accelerator program and spend time with entrepreneurs and maybe share a little advice along the way, provides another great opportunity to give back to the community.” According to Oines, established businesses can support the entrepreneurial community in a variety of ways. Efforts such as supporting industry-related internships and training

programs, sharing best practices and being willing to serve as initial customers for start-up companies are all valuable components that help support the entrepreneurship and create opportunities for sustainability. When all members of the community share experiences and knowledge, it fosters a progressive culture. “All stories need to be shared – successes and failures,” Oines said. “A true spirit of collaboration on all levels will not only set our community apart but also create opportunities that we didn’t know existed.” “It is all about nurturing the culture,” Severson stated. “Those of us established in business remember back when we were starting and those specific programs and people that helped us find our way. For an entrepreneur, it is much harder and a very lonely process. Organizations like Zeal, the Chamber and Augustana University are doing their part, but other programs need to be continually developed to foster our sense of culture in building a more dynamic entrepreneurial community. As momentum continues to build, it just becomes part of what we do and who we are.” Oines states that collaboration is the key to strengthening ties between the entrepreneur community and the broader Sioux Falls business community. “The capstone on effective

collaboration is genuine leadership; leadership shown through mentoring, example and application,” Oines asserted. “Our community must recognize not only that leadership exists in many forms, but also that isolated leadership fragments the spirit of community.” Jeremy Keckler, business banking manager at The First National Bank in Sioux Falls, is optimistic about the growing connections in Sioux Falls. He said, “We know it’s not there yet, but we’ve assumed more responsibility in better melding our business communities. It remains our goal to maximize resources to accelerate the growth of businesses in our community.”

CURRENT GROWTH ACCELERATOR PARTICIPANTS Four companies were competitively selected to participate in this year’s Growth Accelerator program. Each is an earlystage company with demonstrated sales, poised for rapid growth. Following successful completion of the 12 week course, each entrepreneur will pitch to potential investors for funding of the strategy developed during the Growth Accelerator program.

BUSINESS ADVOCACY

Issues Management Council begins fall work Issues Management Council (IMC) is charged with identifying and researching public policy issues that affect our business community as well as the Sioux Falls area and the State of South Dakota. The council meets monthly to hear presentations and discuss issues. Often, the work of the council results in recommendations to the Board of Directors to support or oppose issues and guide our advocacy work.

MARK LEE

Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce

...advocacy efforts are dedicated to serving our members and our community, and IMC is charged with the responsibility for guiding those efforts

A principle focus of IMC is its work leading up to the annual state legislative session, and that work peaks in the fall months. This article will give members a glimpse into the thorough process used by the council and the board as we prepare for the 93rd Legislative Session beginning on January 9, 2018. One IMC responsibility is editing and drafting two documents. First is the Policy Statements document, which outlines the foundation of our advocacy beliefs. While they are edited annually for context and appropriateness, they do not change significantly from year to year. The other document is the annual Legislative Platform. This document does change significantly each year as we identify the specific issues we anticipate for the upcoming session. As you open this edition of Chamber News, the September IMC meeting is approaching. IMC meets on the second Thursday of each month and has, in some years, added a meeting or two when needed. The September meeting will be partially dedicated to studying the recommendations coming from two of the summer legislative studies – the studies on government accountability and initiative and referendum. The study on workforce housing is not far enough along, so it will be part of a future meeting. In October, IMC will review the Policy Statements, consider staff recommendations and provide input for consideration. In addition, the council will likely hear additional presentations on topics of interest that are germane to our legislative preparations. The November IMC meeting will likely include approving the Policy Statements document and forwarding it to the Board of Directors for their consideration. In addition, the council will review a first draft of the 2018 Legislative Platform and discuss questions for the annual legislative issues survey that will be administered in late November. The December IMC meeting will include approving the platform and forwarding it to the Board of Directors for their consideration. Before approving the platform, IMC will consider the results of the issues survey and review a summary of the Governor’s Budget Address. Both of these influence our advocacy positions and efforts. In some years, IMC has met twice in December based on workload, presentations and the types of issues we anticipate. The Chamber’s advocacy efforts are dedicated to serving our members and our community and IMC is charged with the responsibility for guiding those efforts. As you can see from the description above, the process used is thorough, thoughtful and based on sound principles. It is also an involved and time-consuming process – as well it should be. When we, as a chamber, take a position on a major issue, you can rest assured that IMC and your Board of Directors have a proven process they follow to arrive at their decision.

Celebrate manufacturing in South Dakota South Dakota will recognize and celebrate the impact of manufacturing on our state’s economy Oct. 2-6, 2017. The week’s events coincide with National Manufacturers Day on Oct. 6. National Manufacturers Day is observed each year on the first Friday in October as a celebration of modern manufacturing meant to inspire the next generation of manufacturers. The most pressing issue facing the manufacturing industry today is a gap in skilled labor – 80 percent of manufacturers say they cannot find the skilled workers they need. This gap continues to widen. Manufacturing Day is an occasion for manufacturers to share what they do with their communities, and to connect directly with job seekers and students to begin to address the skilled labor shortage they face. In South Dakota, approximately 1 out of every 10 jobs is in manufacturing.

Southeast Technical Institute is hosting a manufacturing sector breakfast on Friday, Sept. 29 at 7:30 a.m. at The Hub, located on their campus. For more information on that event, contact Chellee Unruh at Chellee.Unruh@southeasttech.edu

Nationwide, manufacturers have the highest job tenure in the private sector. Some of the workforce challenge today stems from a lack of understanding of present day manufacturing environments, which are highly technical. Manufacturing Day is an opportunity to address the lack of understanding by simply showcasing what manufacturing looks like in our own community. “Twenty-six thousand people support our community by making a gift to Sioux Empire United Way,” said Bob Thimjon, 2018 Campaign Chair. “Our givers are the key to helping fill in funding gaps for programs that make the difference in the lives of kids, older adults, people with disabilities and more.”

The program removes some of the typical barriers to accessing care, such as financial burdens, transportation to and from an appointment and missing school or a parent missing work. “We are very excited at LSS to partner with the schools and the United Way to expand

The event begins at 7:15 a.m. at the Holiday Inn City Centre, and will feature an address from Governor Dennis Daugaard. “Governor Daugaard has been a tireless advocate for affordable housing during his time in office,” said SEHP President Jim Schmidt. “We are honored to have him participate in our 20th anniversary celebration.” Each year, the SEHP annual breakfast features a summary of activity from the preceding year. the app enhances the visitor experience in the community

As we developed the scope of our app, we evaluated how our successful travel personas could play a role. Personadriven adventures to complete were developed in a game-like integration. The game is the hook for users to download the app. Secondary features enhance the app once users complete the game or prefer in-app content over website content to travel the city. Those additional in-app features include a trip planner programmed by the time of day, a social gallery and suggestions of things to do. Here’s how you play the game. Upon downloading the app, users are asked to select their travel persona from options that include ‘foodie,’ ‘family first,’ ‘outdoors,’ ‘urban explorer,’ ‘shopper’ or ‘empty nester.’ Based on their selected persona, they will complete various adventures around Sioux Falls. These adventures will take the users to many attractions, restaurants, shops and places where they will be asked to complete a task within a challenge. The tasks include answering a question, taking a photo or checking-in via geolocation. To further increase interest in the app and get users to play the game, the CVB will give away a quarterly prize to one person out of a pool of people who have collected the most points and/or badges through a random drawing. The app also features notifications, interactive mapping, geolocation cataloguing, dynamic search and tagging and information collection. For more information regarding the mobile app, go to visitsiouxfalls.com/app.

Partner with your bank to prevent fraud Fraud is on the rise in our nation, as all financial institutions are seeing an increase in this type of activity. In fact, the 2017 Payments Fraud and Control Survey conducted by the Associations for Financial Professionals showed that 74 percent of the organizations surveyed were victims of payment fraud in 2016, up from 62 percent in 2014 and 73 percent in 2015. Throughout my banking career in Sioux Falls, I have witnessed many examples of check fraud from fraudsters replicating payroll checks, lottery checks issued and mailed around the country using a customer’s account information, fraudsters changing amounts and names on checks, and theft of customer checks. Fraud is especially difficult to detect when a trusted employee, family member or friend is involved on the business level. PAM HANNEMAN First PREMIER Bank

It takes a healthy partnership between the customer and their bank to actively prevent and quickly identify this type of criminal activity.

It takes a healthy partnership between the customer and their bank to actively prevent and quickly identify this type of criminal activity. Utilizing tools from your financial institution can help protect your business from fraud. Some helpful practices include: • Use online and mobile banking services to review your account activity on a regular basis (daily, weekly, etc.), which will help you identify suspicious activity and enable you to report it promptly. • Utilize paperless options for your bills and bank statements. These options are quicker to access and can’t be stolen out of a mailbox. • Set up account alerts so you can be notified for various account activity. • Utilize services such as Positive Pay, which provides businesses an added measure of fraud prevention for check and ACH (Automated Clearing House) payments. How does Positive Pay work? A business provides their bank with a list of issued checks and then the bank matches the items being processed through your account to make sure they match. If they don’t, you receive notification of an exception and the business can make a decision to pay or return the item before it is paid out of your account. • Consider paying vendors, suppliers and employees using ACH (Automated Clearing House). This eliminates checks with your information on it being viewed. With Positive Pay you can also set up ACH fraud filters/blocks. Many customers set up a separate account for electronic debits to be initiated out of and several set up ACH debit blocks on all of their accounts. • Reconcile your account on a more frequent basis than monthly. • Make sure your check supply is in a secure place such as a locked file cabinet. • Establish good internal controls within your business. Partnering with your bank, while applying the tools and simple habits described above, will help protect your business from becoming a victim of fraud. Together, you and your bank can combat this type of activity if you stay diligent. The more you can educate yourself on fraud while continuing to remain vigilant on these fraudulent activities, the better. Pam Hanneman is Vice President Business Banking Manager at First PREMIER Bank. She has more than 30 years of experience helping businesses manage their unique financial needs.

The 3 myths of worksite wellness BY KATIE NERMOE Sanford Health

Today more than ever, it often feels like work and the worker are at odds. Employees struggle with work/life balance, with 80 percent of us working after office hours and nearly 70 percent of people admit to not being able to go to bed without checking email one last time. KATIE NERMOE We often end up feeling that there aren’t Sanford Health enough hours in the day to complete our work, nurture relationships with those we care about, pursue the hobbies we love and to relax and enjoy the simple things in life. It has become a fast-paced world, one in which the consumer demands convenience at every turn. However as many of us know, things that are convenient aren’t necessarily good for us.

Corporations have responded to this societal shift with what is referred to today as “worksite wellness.” And while it is essential to the success of an organization to put the health and well-being of their employees first, there are many myths about what a worksite wellness program is and isn’t.

MYTH 1: MY EMPLOYEES ARE THE PROBLEM Leaders often forget that the majority of our waking hours are spent at work. As such, it is unrealistic to expect employees to transform their health in the limited amount of time spent at home each day. For that reason, the workplace is the best place to eat right and move our bodies. Employers send mixed messages to their employees by ordering donuts and cake for meetings, filling their vending machines with candy and chips and requiring a dress code that isn’t conducive to taking the stairs or walking on breaks. This is on top of expecting long work hours. Simply said, many organizations are setting their employees up for failure.

MYTH 2: INCENTIVES CREATE SUSTAINABLE CHANGE Outcomes-based wellness programs have increased with popularity over the last decade (for example, you get $50 if your blood pressure is within the recommended range), which is a surprise as there is little research that supports their effectiveness. The truth is, these programs are not “incentives,” but instead are “rewards or rebates” to employees who are already healthy. Incentives work best for short-term objectives, such as signing up for a tobacco cessation program, showing up for a wellness screen or completing an annual preventive exam. They are not effective in creating long-lasting behavior change.

What really influences our behavior comes back to our employer. Seventy percent is tied to the culture and policies of the organization we work for, which includes the skills and tools made available to us, and the awareness and education we are given while at work. Just 30 percent of what influences our behavior is left to personal motivation. Employers who truly want to see changes in organizational health will take the time to shape the culture that shapes employee thinking.

MYTH 3: IT’S ALL ABOUT EXERCISE AND EATING RIGHT There are six aspects to our well-being: career, social, financial, emotional, physical and community. Conventional worksite wellness programs often ignore this and solely focus on physical health. Recent research suggests that career well-being is the primary driver of our overall health and well-being. If organizations were to focus on just one thing, they should focus on leadership competencies that drive high career well-being. It’s critical to note, these are the same leadership competencies that drive high employee engagement. In other words, your employee engagement strategy and wellness strategy are one and the same. Engaged employees eat more fruits and vegetables, exercise more and have a lower incidence of chronic disease. Through it all, perhaps the biggest myth to bust is that worksite wellness can no longer be seen as a special program or initiative. It’s a new way of organizational living. In fact - it’s your organization’s competitive advantage. At Sanford Health Plan, we go beyond providing health insurance coverage because we believe organizational wealth is driven by employee health. We provide a broad continuum of wellness services, starting with our “Leading for Wellness” leadership development program, to ensure employees can be the best version of themselves each day that they come to work.

FIVE QUESTIONS

Five questions is a monthly feature on a Chamber volunteer, Chamber member or staff member. Want to be featured here? Call (605) 336-1620.

Five questions with Randell Beck Randell Beck is serving his second year as Event Chair of the Chamber’s Annual Meeting. He retired in 2013 from a 35-year career in journalism, and is now enjoying his encore career as the Director of Community Relations at Avera Health. Beck is an advocate for mentoring programs, currently serves as a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sioux Empire and is co-founder of two non-profit organizations: Sioux Falls Hope Coalition and South Dakota News Watch. Beck and his wife Linda have four adult children.

Why do you choose to volunteer your time for the Chamber? My efforts at and on behalf of the Chamber directly influence the quality of life in this great city. An hour spent on Chamber “business” is an investment in my neighborhood and the lives of my children and grandchildren.

Can you offer any hints of what is to come at this year’s Chamber Annual Meeting? RANDELL BECK Avera Health

I can say, unequivocally, that the challenge to make Sioux Falls an even better place to live and work will be front and center – not just thematically but in a practical sense. It will be a memorable annual meeting.

What is one community or non-profit organization that you support and why is it important to you? I’m passionate about kids – and specifically, giving all kids, no matter their background and economic status, a fair shot at building lives of purpose. That lies at the heart of the Sioux Falls Hope Coalition, which is devoted to helping children attend preschool so that they’re ready to learn when they attend kindergarten. Today more than 250 children, mostly from the families of the working poor, are on a waiting list for subsidized preschool. My dream is that this community will eliminate the waiting list.

What might someone be surprised to learn about you? I dropped out of college for four years. Two of those years I traveled around the country; the other two were spent on a Missouri farm as part of the back-to-the-land movement of the early 1970s. I learned a lot.

In your opinion, what is one of the most significant changes in our community in the last 10 years? That’s a tough one because there have been many, but I’d have to say it has been the multiple (and continuing) waves of immigrants and refugees who have made, and continue to make, Sioux Falls home. Their inspiring efforts to build meaningful lives for themselves and a future for their children – the same thing you and I seek – are enriching and reshaping the Sioux Falls many people grew up in. It’s truly a different place from the one I first arrived at on an August day in 2001 – and those differences are revealing new opportunities and horizons for everyone. It’s thrilling to witness and be a part of these changes.
