DEAR SISTERMAG READERS, The different films we’ve been using as sources of inspiration for our 2018 issues already offered the craziest ideas for contributions. This time, it mainly was the title itself and the vividly coloured decorations of the film that invited us to associations. We always realise how important a comfortable bed is for the own well being when we are on the road for some days. The hotel might be really stylish and beautiful – if the bed has a hard mattress or a blanket that’s too thin (yes, I like to have it warm, even in midsummer:)) I want to be back home. A restful night’s sleep is the foundation for a successful day; everybody knows that. That’s why the »PILLOW TALK« issue has a strong focus on the right mattress, cosy blankets and tips for sleeping. But it’s not only the bed itself we deal with in this issue, but also the bedroom. Because of lovesickness, DORIS DAY as the interior designer Jan Morrow transforms ROCK HUDSON ’s bachelor bad into a hideous den of vice filled with kitsch. Of course, no man (and no woman!) wants to live like

that! That’s why we found two bedrooms of women and two bedrooms of men that more likely inspire to dream. The whole drama of the film arises because of the two New York singles using a landline together – a concept that’s hard to imagine, in times of second or third mobile phones. Together with Alex Kords, we even asked ourselves if the landline telephone already became extinct. The 1960s classic was definitely fun to watch for the sisterMAG team but also a source for the most different topics. How film noir darkened Hollywood and the world

After divas dominated the previous part of our film history, this time it’s getting dark. We go back into the time of World War II, the horrors of which also left their imprints on the cinema screen, leading to the creation of a special art form: film noir.

Undoubtedly, World War II was one of the darkest times humanity has endured. When it was over, millions of people were dead and whole cities were lying in ruins. It’s obvious that the survivors couldn’t go on with their normal lives. The depressed mood also had an impact on cinema and prepared the foundation for the success of a very special genre: FILM NOIR.

German Know-how Film noir has its origins in 1940s Hollywood, although the term was entrenched much later. The film critic NINO FRANK created it in 1946 but it was only used retroactively in the 1960s. But what is film noir anyway? The term gives away one of its most important ingredients: the sparse lighting.

Interestingly enough, Hollywood helped itself in Germany: The expressionist films of the 1920s that used the play of light and shadows as well as strong camera work to compensate for the lack of speech were definite role models. Numerous German filmmakers who had to flee from the Nazis

brought their know-how to the United States before World War II. An outstanding example is the director and screenwriter FRITZ LANG, who made ÂťMETROPOLISÂŤ in 1927, one of the most important films in history. He continued his career in Hollywood in 1934.

A criminal case, ideally a murder, is staged in dark pictures, an investigator with human weaknesses investigates while he roams anonymously through a deserted metropolis. The story is told with narrative tricks like a voice-over or flashbacks – that’s the prototypical film noir. The 1940 film »STRANGER ON THE THIRD FLOOR« is considered to be the first one since it – unsurprisingly – is a crime film that contained many of the aforementioned features of a film noir. One of

the actors was the Austrian PETER LORRE, who migrated from Nazi Germany to the USA in 1933. Many critics weren’t pleased with the predictable plot of »STRANGER ON THE THIRD FLOOR« but praised the visual style. One critic wrote that the director, Boris Ingster, did a better job showing shadows than leading the actors. That seems to be a good characterization for the look of the film noir.

too realistic issues

After World War II, PETER LORRE was one of the filmmakers who were under the suspicion of being communists during the McCarthy era. Since he barely found work in the USA as a result, he returned to Germany in 1949. There, he made the film »THE LOST ONE« – his first and last work as a director. The film reached cinemas in 1951 and is considered the most important German film noir today. LORRE plays a scientist who did research for the Nazis and killed his fiancée because she disclosed secrets to a resistance fighter. After the war, he was confronted with his crimes and has to deal SISTER-MAG.COM

with his inner ghosts. LORRE did not only process the Nazi era, which had just came to an end, but also his own fate as a refugee. However, there was hardly anybody who wanted to see the film, so it was removed from cinemas after only 10 days. In the USA, Lorre’s chosen home, the film didn’t even get a publisher. Lorre was frustrated about being misunderstood as an artist and went back to the USA soon after, where he made a living by playing supporting roles.

Film noir in England & France

Other countries also produced film noirs after World War II. One of the best-known ones came from Great Britain and was mainly shot in Vienna: »THE THIRD MAN« with ORSON WELLES as Harry Lime. Film noirs were made in France as well. Just like the British film market, the French one benefited from the fact that several

Hollywood grandees left the USA because they were suspicious of being communists and suffered from a virtual employment ban. The director JULES DASSIN , for example, went to France in 1952 were he shot the most notable French film noir two years later: »RIFIFI« . The era of the classical film noir ended with »TOUCH OF

EVIL« in 1958. In this film – and

that’s a small recourse to the previous part of our film history about divas – both MARLENE DIETRICH and ZSA ZSA GABOR played a minor role. »TOUCH OF EVIL« was the last film the director ORSON WELLES made in the USA. He went to Europe in 1959 since he didn’t have the feeling that Hollywood film studios took his work seriously – a fate that many film noir makers obviously shared. SISTER-MAG.COM

New darkness

The stylistic elements of film noir never really vanished and are implemented with convincing authenticity until today. Recent examples for those so-called neo noir films are the »DARK KNIGHT« trilogy by Christopher Nolan with Christian Bale as Batman, the two »JOHN WICK« films with Keanu Reeves, as well

as »BLADE RUNNER 2049« , the sequel of the 1982 film »BLADE RUNNER« . The series »VERONICA MARS« that ran in three seasons from 2004 to 2007 and got a final film in 2014 is another example for the neo noir genre. And there will surely be many more representatives of this exciting art form in the future.

The telephone provides the basis for the romantic trials and tribulations in this popular romantic comedy by Michael Gordon. Interior designer Jan Morrow ( D O R I S DAY ) and songwriter Brad Allen ( R O C K H U D S O N ) have to share a socalled party line. Not unusual in New York during the 1950s. The shared line also meant, however, that the involved users do not know each other in person but can listen to each otherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s telephone chats and cut into their conversations.

Jan is so annoyed about him, that she starts to argue with Brad with increased frequency. When they finally meet in real life, he introduces himself as a cowboy from Texas on a New York 29

tour, which triggers a series of romantic trials and tribulations, especially with mistaken identities. The film title is programmatic: With its sexual allusions and intimate double entendre, Pillow Talk caused quite a stir at the box offices. The film ranks among the three most successful blockbusters of the year 1959 from the film studio Universal. Pillow Talk is also an intermedial film, because it reflects and depicts the technological peculiarities and novelties of the medium telephone.

Production Code. P I L LOW TA L K encompasses ten split screen scenes, which show the intimate telephone conversations between D O R I S D AY and R O C K H U D S O N . Those scenes appear less frequently during the course of the film, when Brad and Jan get to know each other better in real life. According to film critic Hans Wulff, split screen means those »filmic image forms … which show separate single images in several image sectors« (own translation). Generally speaking, the filmic image is divided up into several single images which present

multiple settings simultaneously. Thus, split screen is the ideal stylistic device to portray the communication situation of a telephone conversation – with its situation of spatial distance and communicative nearness. During the 1950s and 1960s, an optical printer generated the cinematic effect, which can today be realised with digital technology. At the beginning of Pillow Talk the shared party line is introduced via a three-fold split screen. Very striking: The synthetized single images all show a characteristic V-form which is reminiscent of

How much the split screen symbolises implicit eroticism and the separation of the sexes in Pillow Talk is made clear in the bathtub scene, in which Jan and

In this scene, the film image is subdivided into two separate images, which show Jan’s and Brad’s bathrooms respectively. Both are lying (separated by split screen on a formal level of the film image) in their own bath tub. The image cadre, lighting, miseen-scene and colours, however, evoke the impression that Jan and Brad share the same bath tub. Such an erotic-intimate double entendre is supported by the fact, that the boundaries of the filmic image seem to blur, when Brad’s naked foot is touching the tiles and Jan quickly withdraws her

foot (because of the seeming body contact). The subdivided screen is attributed with a decidedly tactile border according to film critic M A LT E H AG E N E R . The aesthetics of the split screen turn into an erotic stylistic device, which helps to create intimacy and sexual allusions during the rigid Hays Production Code. Thus, the film uses the split screen to depict premarital sexuality in a legitimate way. Brad and Jan are, for instance, also shown together in bed with the help of a split screen mode. The boundary between split images is on the one hand separating but can also be understood as one coherent space. It is exactly this double

Indiscreet (Hans Otto Wendt) romantic comedies of the fifties seemed rather old-fashioned and obsolete. The release of the Playboy-magazine in November 1953 and the Alfred Kinsey report on female sexuality triggered the sex topic also for Hollywood films. The term »sex comedy« is in fact a bit misleading: A better term would be »battle of the sexes comedies«. For in the films, there is actually no sex at all. The Hays Production Code prohibited a

The films were rather full of implicit allusions to eroticism, sexual double entendre, discreet fade-outs and visual metaphors. When you pin the hot strands into curls while cooling down, they will be more stable in the end! Fix everything with hairspray and open the curls again.

IDEA & CONCEPT

We came up with the idea during our studies, when we offered city tours in our free time. Berlin is a city full of history – an open-air museum of the 20th Century, so to speak. After the first guided tours, we had so much fun conveying this story that we stuck with it after our studies. At the beginning we were still underway with old city maps and photos. Then we had a question: How can we convey the history, and above all the many structural changes of the city, more vividly so that our guests can really immerse themselves in the many layers of time that surround them in Berlin? So in 2004 we developed the VIDEOBUSTOUR – Berlin and Germany's first and only multimedia city tour. WHAT MAKES YOUR TOURS UNIQUE?

What's special is that we show HISTORICAL FILM and photo shots on monitors in the buses SISTER-MAG.COM

at their original locations. This gives guests the ultimate before and after experience. At the Brandenburg Gate, for example, you can see how the Wall was built in 1961 and how it fell again in 1989. All of our clips are built into a narrative by our guides so that the guests get an overview from the history of Prussia to the present during their time travel through Berlin. Besides the films, our guides are the second special feature of the tour. From the Berlin girl with her famous »SCHNAUZE« to the cool film freak and dashing historian, we have the right guide for every tour. Besides time travel, we

FILM CITY BERLIN THE ROLLING CINEMA REVIEW SOPHIA WERNER

As a non-Berliner I have already taken various sightseeing tours through the capital. Bus tours, boat tours, walking tours, the full program. City specifics aside, I can say that many of these tours are quite similar â&#x20AC;&#x201C; informative and solid. The startup ZEITREISEN promises something a little different, with a new format, and I was curious to check it out for myself. Underway with the rolling cinema and one of the founders himself as a tour guide, I got to know Berlin as a hot spot for film. SISTER-MAG.COM

Behind this tour are a series of long nights with a lot of drinks, cigarettes, and, of course, movies. There was no absence of arduous research, as some films were only available on cassettes at that time.

In addition to well-known sights like the Gendarmenmarkt, the Reichstag, and the Lustgarten at Berlin Cathedral, the tour also led to places where bus tours normally don't venture – whether visiting Paul and Paula (from »The Legend of Paul and Paula«) near Berghain in Friedrichshain or at Markhalle 9's Weltrestaurant in Kreuzberg in the footsteps of »Herr Lehmann«.

As I mentioned, I still lack storage space. But otherwise everything can stay like this for now. Since the wallpaper has partially deteriorated and I have this ancient wall behind the bed, it radiates peace and is certainly not boring!

Comfortable nap T H E HISTOR Y OF TH E MAT T R ESS Leaves â&#x20AC;&#x201C; or rather hay? What seems to be animal food are two materials humans used to sleep on during their evolution. Wool and animal fur were two more of them. Fortunately, a smart Canadian had the idea of sewing springs into mattresses 100 years ago.

Sleeping on grass and leaves After a hard day, we are just happy to lie on our mattress. The soft, slightly springy surface catches us and provides for a relaxing night. If we had lived about 200 years ago, it would have been a bag full of sheep’s wool we would have to stretch out on – that might have been quite comfortable.

The oldest mattresses ever found were made of much less comfortable materials: leaves, branches and grass. They were discovered in the Sibudu Cave in South Africa and are approximately 77.000 years old. The Stone Age men who manufactured them used various thin layers of different leaves and grasses they had collected and brought into the cave. It’s verified that they set their mattresses on fire from time to time to kill the vermin that lived in them and made new ones. Centuries later, humans used animal fur as a surface for sleeping; they kept doing so until the time of the Ancient Greeks came. Then, the development of mattresses evolved rapidly: Fabric bags were filled with soft material like straw, wool or bird’s feathers. In the ruins of Pompeii, a mattress made of hay that a slave used for

sleeping was found. The collapse of the Roman Empire at the end of the fifth century, however, set back the mattress culture again. People in the Middle Ages spent their nights on animal fur or pieces of cloth they spread on the floor. The knights that came back from the crusades in the eleventh century brought some comfort since they reported about the mattresses in Arabia. From then on, night camps were cushioned with goose feathers, hay or wool again.

Springs in horsehair A quantum leap in the development of mattresses followed in 1899 when the Canadian engineer James Marshall invented the spring mattress. Because his wife was sick, he wanted her to have a comfortable place to lie. To do so, he stuffed horsehair into small cotton bags and added one metal spring per bag. Subsequently, he

put the bags together to form a bed surface. The idea wasn’t new since the seating surface of some furniture items already consisted of these materials. But Marshall was the first one who used them to make a bed. The concept is still brilliant: Thanks to the bags, the weight on the mattress is distributed to a number of springs which makes resting on it a lot more comfortable than on animal hair. In 1900, Marshall applied a patent in Canada, the USA and Great Britain followed shortly after. He founded the Marshall Mattress company that’s still in existence today. He also licensed the products to former employees who founded the Marshall

Sanitary Mattress Company in the English town of Plymouth. They produced mattresses for luxury hotels and cruise ships, even the rich passengers of the »Titanic« slept on the results of Marshall’s inventiveness. In the 1930s, the English company was renamed to Vispring. The first two letters of the new name stand for the Roman number six since that’s the number of turns of every spring in the mattresses. Vispring is also still in business today and manufactures the noblest mattresses in the world. At Harrods in London, you can purchase versions worth up to 58,000 euros.

Foam vs. springs What makes Vispring special today was common practise back then: The springs had to be sewn into the mattresses in time-consuming manual work, which made the results only affordable for wealthy citizens. The industrialisation was a game changer in this area and made mass production possible and the spring mattresses affordable for everybody. From the mid-1920s on, horsehair was replaced by cotton as filling of the mattresses. Nobler versions contained the wool of Shetland sheep. Today, however, spring mattresses are not top of the line anymore since they have some disadvantages. Many versions, for example, provide insufficient support for shoulders and pelvis. Also, single springs could pierce

the upholstery and affect the resting. With their significant development, mattresses made of foam have become serious alternatives. Accomplishments like memory foam that adapts to the body form of the user conduce to this success. But whichever kind of mattress you opt for: You shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take the decision lightly. After all, we spend one third of our lives in bed.

My personal bedroom highlight is my bed in combination with the old bedside table of my grandmother, the two pictures my mom had in her apartment at one time, and the flowers a friend of mine dried, framed, and gave me as a present. Most of us are familiar with the trademark necessities for survival: food, water, shelter, and oxygen. But there is another physiological need among Maslow’s famed hierarchy: sleep. And unlike the others, sleep is often brushed off as an inconvenience for when life has other plans – it might be work, the latest weeklong docu-series, or partying into the morning hours. It’s not just about committing to an early bedtime, either. For many, nighttime nesting can feel like a second job. And like any side hustle, it takes a little work.

It seems like every generation finds it increasingly more difficult to get a good night’s sleep. And it’s no wonder: we’re drinking more coffee than ever to stay alert during our demanding professional lives, are addicted to screens, outfit our bedroom as a home office, and simply cannot commit to a schedule. All of these factors have an adverse effect on the quality of sleep. The good news is a few relatively minor adjustments can make a big difference between lamenting how tired you are all day and having the energy to forgo double digit espressos.

CUT THE CAFFEINE

This one should go without saying, but we’re all guilty of pushing the boundary for how late we can get away with having another coffee. According to one study, you’ll lose about an hour of sleep if you consume caffeine six hours before going to bed. Of course everybody reacts differently to the effects of caffeine, but science says 2 p.m. is the latest you should be getting your java fix. And it’s not just coffee, either – chocolate should also be a no-go after early afternoon.

STRICT NAPS You can breathe a sigh of relief: naps are actually part of the circadian rhythm when they’re timed right. Around 2 p.m. is in sync with this rhythm and shouldn’t have any negative impact on your ability to fall asleep at night. It’s important to avoid stage 3 deep sleep, so be sure to set an alarm for no more than 30 minutes after you start dozing off. This also prevents you from feeling like you’ve just been in hibernation for half a year when you wake up.

DITCH THE SCREEN According to the Journal of Sleep Research, using your laptop or smartphone in your bedroom contributes to a delayed circadian rhythm, which disrupts the natural flow of your sleep cycle. It should also go without saying that televisions have no place in the bedroom. Those bright flashes of light before bed cause your neurons to remain agitated when they should be settling into a calm state. If you need some mental stimulation before tucking in for the night, do it the old school way by reading a book.

STICK TO A SCHEDULE This one’s tough, especially for those who like to take things late into the night on weekends. Make an effort to fall asleep and wake up around the same time every day. Yes, that means cutting back on 3 a.m. sessions mid-week and snoozing until noon on weekends. There’s also mind memory at play – your body tells itself it should start preparing for sleep at the same time every night if you manage to stay on schedule for a few weeks.

Research suggests that the best temperature for sleep is between 15 and 19 degrees Celsius. This range helps you maintain the optimum body temperature to get the best sleep possible. While sleeping in temperatures below this range will have a mild impact on your ability to stay asleep, hotter temperatures can have a very disruptive effect. If air conditioning is out of the question on hot, humid nights, it might be wise to invest in a small fan. Further increase ventilation in your bedroom by sleeping with the window or door open; this lowers the level of CO2 in the air, which has been proven to improve sleepiness. Ideally, your bedroom will be cool, quiet, and dark. Think of it like a cave.

MAKE IT RAIN

EXCLUSIVE USE Your bedroom should have only two things: you and a bed. Ok, and maybe a few other accoutrements, so long as they complement the mission. Avoid doubling your sleep sanctuary as a home office, storage space, or for any other purpose that invites unnecessary lingering or extra clutter. No Xbox or fax machines next to the bed, for example. There’s an adage somewhere that the bedroom should be reserved for sleep and sex only. Try to stick with that recommendation.

While I haven’t found any sound science to support this remedy, I find it very calming to fall asleep to the sound of rain. Natural precipitation is best, of course, though a bluetooth speaker in the corner playing a three-hour recording of a storm is just as effective. The white noise of the rain masks any jutting sounds like chestnuts falling from the tree in the courtyard or your neighbours’ routine shouting matches.

attractant that gives your pet a type of high). Certain balms and passionflowers also have a sleep-inducing effect. There is an argument to be made for sleeping pills when used acutely and short-term. You should not exceed using them for 14 days. It should go without saying that not using them is always the best choice. Abuse and overdose of barbiturates is vicious circle that became the unfortunate fate of Marilyn Monroe, Jimmy Hendrix, and Ernest Hemingway's granddaughter, Margaux Hemingway. important medium for POLITICS. The most successful German politicians have hundreds of thousands of followers, and every Twitter user has the potential to broadcast to the entire world. That's because tweets are usually public and viewable even to those who – like this author – inexplicably still do not have their own account. Much has been written about the political significance of Twitter in general, which is an undoubtedly relevant, though broad topic (too broad for this article).

THE TERM »PILLOW TALK« REFERS TO CONVERSATION THAT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE SILENT, BUT TAKES PLACE IN A FAMILIAR SETTING, IS UNOFFICIAL, AND OFTEN FULL OF CONSEQUENCES. The traditional function of whispering in politics is very similar and is also best understood in a figurative sense. One thinks, for example, of off-the-record discussions with journalists, about which only a few people know and cannot be quoted, or of assumptions and hints that are

unofficially expressed to trusted third parties. And then diplomacy comes to mind, an official channel of political communication to exchange or negotiate information. Of course, all of this happens largely invisible to the public – in a whisper, so to speak.

I ACTUALLY ASSOCIATE TWITTER NOT WITH WHISPERS, BUT MORE TO THE TUNE OF SHOUTING YOUR OPINIONS FROM A ROOFTOP.

Undoubtedly there is a shift in political communication at the moment, which can be attributed to Twitter and its peculiarities (briefly call upon the hashtag #POTUS if you have any doubts). Twitter is one of the main platforms of so-

called »DIGITAL DISCOURSE«. But when I think about who actually whispers in this digital arena, algorithms that seem to know us in disturbing detail come to my mind. They know us good enough to be informed about our personal interests, contacts, and product preferences, and to offer us custom-tailored content.

While tweeting is technically a process of silent speaking – just like whispering – this parallel is somewhat fascinating. Taking into account our changing communication habits, it may not be completely absurd. But two main differences are important for me to distinguish. On the one hand, the aforementioned public nature of Twitter, and on the other

the intention of the speaker. While whispering is usually aimed at a small circle of selected recipients, the opposite is true for Twitter:

One of them is the widespread dissemination: About 90 per cent of all German households still have a fixed-line connection – which is connected with the fact that you still need one to get an Internet connection. Especially old people use their habitual landline telephone

for detailed conversations with friends and relatives. And many companies still equip their employees with landlines rather than mobile phones and, thus, increase the statistics by a lot of minutes. Smartphones, on the other hand, provide more options for communication than landline phones. They can not only be used to phone but also to text and send voice messages. And the mobile phones are already in the majority: Five years ago, households with at least one mobile phone outstripped the ones with a landline. Statistically speaking, there are even more mobile phones than people in Germany: about 94.5 million devices.

until every German landline only phones over the Internet. In general, the World Wide Web has become the big antagonist of the telephone over the past years â&#x20AC;&#x201C; no matter whether itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mobile or fixed.

A look into the crystal ball

In 2017, Germans phoned around 260 millions minutes per day via socalled over-thetop services. Those are services like Skype, Facetime and WhatsApp that allow phoning over the Internet with a designated software.

The progress made in the area of telephony over the last years lets us use our imagination. Can we project the person we call into our apartment as a threedimensional hologram at some point? Will there be jackets on the market in the near future that have a sender and a receiver sewn into their sleeves so we only have to raise our arms to phone? Or can brave people have the necessary technology transplanted into their bodies soon? As for mobile telephony, the trend seems

to go to the elimination of the smartphones – today’s smartwatch models we can use to phone already show that. Several over-the-top providers, including the heavyweights Amazon and Google, currently work on virtual assistants that automatically answer or even make calls. On its developers conference I/O in May, Google presented how this is supposed to work: The software called Google Duplex was able to make a hairdresser appointment and reserve a table in a restaurant – without the human counterpart even noticing that they were talking to a computer program.
