Giving to SJI International
GREAT THINGS ARE POSSIBLE Brother Lawrence Humphrey, FSC Brother President In December 2019, experts watched anxiously as the emergence of a novel coronavirus was first identified. Within a year all of our lives would be impacted by the worldwide pandemic. In fact, it has been reported that the education of 90% of the world’s children has been disrupted by the virus. 2020 came, and with it, more global challenges. The Australian and US wildfires, the Beirut explosion, the devastating floods in Indonesia, the aftermath of the volcanic eruption in the Philippines, not to mention attacks on the dignity of human beings exhibited in matters like migration, exacerbated individualism, human trafficking, child slavery, and the like. One might ask: what worse could come after this? And nevertheless, even in the face of all these challenges, great things are possible. This has been the theme for reflection in Lasallian schools across the globe. Throughout the year, we have been asked to consider what the “great things” are, so that we Lasallians can positively respond to the challenges posed to us by the world today. This issue of Humanitas showcases how your overwhelming support for our Scholarships and Bursaries Fund through SINGALA III enabled us to award our very first batch of Lasallian scholarships in 2020. This 6-year scholarship programme enables us to extend the opportunity of an SJI International education to qualified young people from Lasallian primary schools in Singapore. This issue also features three of our scholars from the Class of 2019 who recount many of the great things that happened to them during their time at SJI International. One scholar describes it as some of the “most transformative years” of his life.

While 2020 has been a year like no other, thanks to you, great things continue to take place every day at SJI International. Even while masked and safely-distanced from one another, our community proved that we could do virtually anything. For many of our students, these experiences are only possible because of your support. As they leave SJI International, they take with them the culmination of their learnings and discoveries that embody what it means to be a person of integrity and a person for others. I hope that you enjoy reading their stories in this issue and that they inspire you to continue to partner with us in our mission to reach out to the last, the lost and the least. Once again, for all that you do for our students and for making great things happen – thank you.

WHY GIVING MATTERS: AN INTERVIEW WITH MR KENNETH LI A passionate parent, Board Member and supporter What is your connection to SJII and how long have you been part of the community? My connection with SJII started in 2014 when my oldest daughter, Audrey, joined SJII as a Prep 2 and my connection grew stronger when my other daughters, Kendra and Kate, joined the SJII family the following years. What is your background? What do you do for a passion or fun? Passion and fun for me revolves around family and friends. As a family, we love horse riding, skiing, and traveling together as we believe that these 3 activities promote great bonding experiences. In addition to riding horses, the entire family can often be seen at the stables taking care of our horse, Lilli. Despite living near the equator, we love spending the winter months skiing as it is a fantastic opportunity for the family to spend time together (and with friends) both on the slopes and by the fireplace. Finally, we love to travel. In addition to seeing new places, it is an excellent opportunity for the family to share wonderful memories. What excites you about the education and opportunities for students at SJII? My grandfather is an incredible role model for me when it comes to the support of education. A phrase he always uses is “if a country is to be prosperous and strong, the most important element is education” (translated from Chinese). Therefore, providing education opportunities to everyone has always been a goal of his. Assisting him in many of his “education ventures” for many years has naturally developed my passion for supporting education and inspired me to join him in this cause. The differentiating aspect of SJII’s education that excites me most is our commitment to service, which can be seen starting in the Elementary School all the way to the High School, highlighted by the Grade 11 Service Trip. It is this virtue of giving back and paying it forward, which can be felt through the entire SJII community that makes SJII truly unique as an institution. This positive energy which emanates through the school is what excites me and drives me to do more for the school and our students.
Tell us why you wanted to volunteer and sit on the SJII Board, and what is your role? Four years ago, I was asked to join the SJII Board of Governors which I am grateful for each and every day because it gives me the opportunity to contribute to a school with an education ethos I strongly believe in and to give back to the remarkable school that has been integral in the positive development of my 3 kids. As a Governor, I have had the opportunity to work alongside a fully committed Board and a selfless Leadership Team who work in unity with only the best interests of the school and its students in mind. This has become the driving force that pushes me on to continue to serve this extraordinary school. In 2018, I was very fortunate to be assigned Chair of the Scholarship Committee where I get to work hand in hand with the most altruistic group of committee members to further our scholarship program. What are you most proud of with the work done by the Scholarship Committee? There are way too many proud moments, but one thing I admire most about the legacy of the Scholarship Committee that has been passed down to me is the “never give up” mentality when it comes to the support of our scholars. I am proud that we have a supportive and compassionate Board of Governors, School Leadership Team, teachers, staff members and an SJII community who never gives up on our scholars and are all integral in the success of our scholarship program. I am also most proud of our scholars who are the most deserving group of young men and women who bring so much to our community. What would you say to parents and alumni about why they should consider supporting SJII (this can be about volunteering and/or giving)? In volunteering or giving, it is imperative that one believes in the cause. In the case of SJII, this refers to believing in the school, our faculty, our core Lasallian principles, our mission, and most importantly the confidence in SJII’s ability to develop students who will make a difference and contribute to society. For this, I am thankful to all our supporters who share our vision. I hope that with greater participation in school events, more will be able to interact with our students and see for themselves our exceptional student body and our ever-so dedicated faculty and staff.

SINGALA III: THE CIRCLE OF LIFE – AN AFRICAN ADVENTURE
Truly great film trilogies are so uncommon because at least one entry fails to live up to the promise of the others, usually the third. SINGALA III begged to differ. Upon arrival, guests in their African-inspired attire were welcomed with a lively Brazilianinspired piece composed and performed by our Samba Band. Going further in, a beautiful foliage archway served as an entrance to what would be a superb adventure: from the staircase decorated with garlands of even more foliage and African baubles, the reception area with plants big and small and photos of wild animals hanging on wooden frames, all the way to the splendour of the Windsor Ballroom itself transformed into an African jungle for the night. On the side of the ballroom was a multitude of items for auction, lavishly displayed in the gorgeously bedecked auction tents which attracted generous bids. As the doors opened, a tribe of scholars past and present entered the ballroom accompanied by representatives of the SJI International community who are champions of the Scholarship Programme. Leading the tribe was founding scholar Jeremiah Pereira, who sang a beautiful rendition of the Lion King opening song Circle of Life. After a welcome speech by the Chair of the SINGALA Organising Committee, Mrs Fiona Rankine Al-Junied, guests were treated to the wonderful talent of student Elizabeth Tay who performed John Lennon’s Beautiful Boy and
showcased an art she created and donated for auction. The piece was later auctioned live – raising $25,000. Other performers on the night included the Bella Voce Choir who performed a lineup of traditional African songs; the Elementary School String Ensemble; and the African Marimba Ensemble. Former scholar Jessa Alfajardo, who is in a further scholarship at Hong Kong Baptist University, flew in from Hong Kong to share the impact of the SJI International scholarship to her life. Other speeches from scholars featured Jeremiah, who is now a Medical Doctor; Brian Theng, on video from Oxford; and current scholars Sophuth Phon and Jiayi Zhu. In conjunction with the 300th Anniversary of the death of our Founder St John Baptist de La Salle, who was born in Rheims, France, the Guest of Honour at SINGALA III was His Excellency Marc Abensour, Ambassador of France to Singapore. Closing the evening was a speech by Scholarship Committee Chairman Kenneth Li, who thanked the many supporters and well-wishers of SINGALA since its inception in 2015. Funds raised on the evening amounted to almost $1.5 million – a remarkable feat accomplished only through the many hearts and hands that enable us to continue to reach out to the last, the lost and the least.

SCHOLARS’ REFLECTIONS THE POWER OF A THANKFUL HEART
Matthew Chua Class of 2027 Lasallian Scholarship Recipient
“SJII is a very supportive community where the students’ wellbeing is a crucial part of its teaching. Its service-oriented nature encourages and empowers the students to serve the less fortunate. When I received the scholarship, I was ecstatic and my family was very proud and happy for me. This scholarship has given me opportunities that I would otherwise never have. It is a once-in-alifetime experience and I feel extremely honoured to be one of the inaugural recipients of this scholarship. I hope I can inspire others to help the less fortunate in my time in this school.”
Rachel Handoko Singapore Class of 2020
Tuan Dung Nguyen Vietnam Class of 2020
Janssen Tanuwijaya Indonesia Class of 2020
“Many times, I find myself in complete awe at the sheer amount of blessings I have received from this scholarship. The experience of studying in SJI International has truly given me breadth and depth in perspective, and allowed me to develop as an individual who strives to ‘Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve’. Through the support of my teachers and peers, I am able to lead my own CCAs, start my own local and regional advocacy projects, and even take part in multiple regional conferences. I hope to create the same opportunities for others through my CCAs and projects.”
“I would compare my journey in SJII with being on a cruise, on which I was able to marvel at the vast ocean of experiences that was once too far out of reach. Being on this voyage has allowed me to immerse in an international environment, where I explore the hidden crevices of my character, through activities such as Challenge Week in Indonesia and Peer Mentoring Program. This journey, with its various highs and lows, has taught me to become a passionate, sympathetic, and well-equipped person who is ready to contribute for the betterment of the world.”
“Enter to learn, leave to serve. This very motto echoes ever increasingly in my head as I am in my graduation year. Given this scholarship opportunity, I am introduced to the importance of service and significance of human connections. I have been exposed to a diverse variety of people where I am able to learn a lot of things from each and every individual. SJI International truly inspires me to never stop learning and always serving others.”

Some of our current scholars reflect on what the scholarship means to them, what they have learned on their journey so far, and how they plan to give back to the world and their communities in the future. “The scholarship has definitely impacted me and my family in many positive ways. It has lightened our financial burden and also made me and my family proud of my achievement. It also has shown me that I’m capable of accomplishing something this big and that I shouldn’t stop working hard to reach my dreams. It has also encouraged me to not give up and keep going on.
Darius Kawasoe Class of 2027 Lasallian Scholarship Recipient
My experience in this school has been great so far. Most of the teachers are friendly and approachable. My classmates and friends are also helpful and caring. From my perspective, the time schedule for school is planned out well and so there’s enough time for me to communicate with my peers and have fun while we learn. The facilities are also very well maintained and it’s all thanks to the amazing cleaners who I see work hard day to day. Overall, I feel that SJI International is a place that you can seek comfort, safety and a great place to learn. I definitely look forward to making more friends from all over the world so that we could talk about our differences and similarities as well as have fun talking about other things. I also definitely look forward to expanding my knowledge by going in-depth into the different subjects taught. I would also like to get to know more about the school and its history/story.”
Anh Duc Nguyen Vietnam Class of 2020
Joaquin Torres Philippines Class of 2020
“When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” When talking about the scholarship, I do not resonate with this proverbial phrase in any sense. Materialistically speaking, the scholarship that SJI International gave me is not equivalent to only “lemons,” but it is rather tequila salt with lemons. Figuratively speaking, my scholarship offered me the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and more importantly the valuable freedom to use that opportunity. As I am not restricted to only “make lemonade,” I am capable of doing so much more: using the lemons for my Chemistry IA for academic values, using the lemons to hold a fundraising competition “who can withstand most sourness” for service values, or using the lemons to hold a healthy party with people who are given the watermelons or pineapples for recreational values. The list of possibilities can go on forever, but no matter what I did, do or will do, I am tremendously grateful for the
“I believe that education has the power to change lives, so being given the opportunity to be part of the SJI International community has made a big difference in my life. Their holistic education has allowed me to not only explore subjects that I love through both classroom and experiential learning, but also develop my passions in theatre, create lifelong friendships, and serve communities such as underprivileged kids in Cambodia and South Sudan. Most especially, through this scholarship, I was able to give back to my mother and show her my gratitude for supporting me throughout my entire life. Moving forward, I will use this lifechanging education to continue to change lives, to use the lessons, values, and skills I’ve learned to inspire many people who, like me, believe in the power of education.”

THE OPPORTUNITY OF A LIFETIME What does becoming a scholar means to a prospective student at St. Joseph’s Institution International? The opportunity of a lifetime. Jiayi Zhu ‘19 joined SJI International as a Scholar in 2018. She discovered the scholarship programme opportunity the year before, and the thought of possibly being a scholar in an international school after being in a local school for 10 years really excited her. Coming from modest means, this would not have been an opportunity she could have considered. “I remember how proud my mother was when I was accepted for the SJI International Scholarship Programme. It would also mean one less worry for her as she always felt that she was not able to provide the best for both me and my sister,” Jiayi shared. Applying for the scholarship had given her motivation to work harder for her ‘O’ levels that year, as she wanted to enter SJI International feeling that she was worthy of being selected as a scholar. As a student, Jiayi took full advantage of the holistic International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and the expansive co-curricular activities offered to students. She joined the Photography and Astrophysics clubs, the Touch Rugby Team and even the Folk Songs Group, that allowed her to embrace her inner passion for singing that she had never dared to share.
As a part of her IB programme, she completed her service-learning working with Oasis Second Chance Animal Shelter. Embodying the spirit of her Lasallian education and the school’s motto “Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve”, beyond her school requirements, she independently chose to volunteer at Tan Tock Seng Hospital which sparked her interest in considering the medical field. Fast forward two years later to Jiayi’s graduation from SJI International in November 2019, and her completion of the IB programme. Scoring an impressive 42/45 on her IB exams, Jiayi is hoping to pursue family medicine or paediatrics as a doctor and is currently applying to read medicine at a university in Singapore. “Before the scholarship, I had scaled down my aspirations and the pathway to university seemed distant. The nurturing and stimulating environment restored my confidence, self-esteem and enabled me to dream again. Being in SJI International gave me the chance to reach my full potential.” Jiayi Zhu Singaporean | IB Score: 42 Recipient of the Estate of the late Khoo Teck Puat Scholarship
A TRANSFORMATIVE EDUCATION Looking back on my time at SJI International, I can think of no better place to have spent what was arguably some of the most transformative years of my life. The international community, rigorous academics, and wide-ranging extracurriculars have all challenged and enriched my educational journey. My personal experience being both a scholar and the son of a teacher here, led me to be doubly appreciative of the unique advantages of a Lasallian education as well as the generous benefactors that make this possible for so many. I firmly believe that an SJI International education has the potential to be whatever you want it to be; during my time in school, I experienced service-learning firsthand, teaching music lessons at a UWS school in Koh Chreum, Cambodia, and later joining eyecare drives at a children’s home in Western Thailand. As a member of the Student Council, I had the opportunity to exercise my leadership and teamwork abilities through schoolwide initiatives such as Wellbeing Week. These
14
are just the drop in the metaphorical bucket of opportunities available to the SJI International student, and I am extremely grateful for having been able to take part in a few of them. Following my graduation, I decided to spend a term working at the SJI International Elementary School as a Teaching Partner, where I continued to be impressed by the sincere staff and the comprehensive virtues-based curriculum. As I prepare myself for the next stage of my life at Yale University, I remain greatly indebted to SJI International for the skills and opportunities with which it has provided me.
Ritik Chamola Indian | IB Score: 45 Recipient of an SJI International Scholarship
OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH Before joining SJI International, I had been studying at RGS, a local secondary school, for 2 years, before which I’d been living overseas and attending an international school. I felt immediately at home when I started at SJI, in part because it was the ideal middle ground between a local and international school, and in part because of the extremely generous financial, academic, and personal support with which I was provided. The best part of my SJI International experience was the freedom it allowed me both in and outside the classroom. Thanks to a multidisciplinary IB curriculum, I discovered new favorite subjects like Computer Science and Theory of Knowledge that I would otherwise have never been exposed to. SJII’s diverse extracurricular programme also facilitated my exploration outside of academics, allowing me to participate in activities like swimming, basketball, peer mentoring, French debate, student journalism, and more - many of which I plan to continue pursuing in college and beyond. SJII’s strong service emphasis, in particular, has challenged me to be a more
socially responsible and civically engaged student, through school-based experiences like Challenge Week and academic mentoring as well as independent passion projects like education outreach volunteering. This August, I’ll be heading off to my first-choice college in the US (a small liberal arts school called Swarthmore College). Without the guidance of SJII’s counseling and leadership teams, I may never have seen the liberal arts as a viable academic pathway well-suited to my career goals. And without the breadth of opportunities I was afforded as an SJII scholar, I would not have had the same access to the academic and extra-curricular experiences that prepared me for admission to such a school. For this and countless other reasons, my two years at SJII have benefited me immeasurably. Nicole Nair Singaporean | IB Score: 44 Recipient of an SJI International Scholarship

Since SJI International opened its doors in 2007, it has awarded more than 200 scholarships. Of that number around 40 are still at school completing the IB Diploma, and many of the more recent cohorts have yet to embark on their university education. However, we thought it timely to look and see how our scholars have fared since leaving school and to share updates on some whose education at SJI International was most generously sponsored - by you, our donors.
JOHN OOI Bachelor of Economics from the University of Queensland; Currently teaching Economics at SJI International Malaysia
“The SJI International Scholarship was nothing short of life-changing. I remember joining the school just after my mother had passed away. It was also the first time that I had left home, so there were a lot of challenges that I faced, particularly in the first few months. Nevertheless, with the guidance of my teachers and the admin staff of the school, I am glad that I managed to complete the IBDP and secure a full tuition fee scholarship with The University of Queensland. It is amazing to know that most of the staff that have seen me through the most challenging two years of my life are still working at SJI International. The experience had certainly inspired me to join the education space and become an Economics teacher at St. Joseph’s Institution International School Malaysia. I am also managing the hostel at SJIIM, which reminded me of the days when I used to stay in Katong under the SJI International hostel. I hope to return to my alma mater as a teacher one day when I have enough teaching experience to qualify to enter its gates.”

SANDESH SAMBHI Studied Medicine at NUS; Currently a Psychiatry resident at the National Healthcare Group
“The teenage years are such a vulnerable time in terms of personal and academic development and I can say with total certainty for me, that the opportunity to attend SJII rekindled a love for learning that had almost died. Without the emotional, creative and academic guidance I got at SJII, I would never have made it into the prestigious medical program at NUS or had confidence in my own ability to hold my own there. I owe my every professional success to SJII and am a proud, thriving alumnus.”
2010 ANH TRAN Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Cincinnati; Currently a Facade Consultant for a Singapore-based international engineering firm AMANDA ANG BS in Agricultural and Consumer Economics, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (USA), 2015; MS in Agricultural and Applied Economics, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2017; PhD student, Economics, University of Southern California (USA)
“The SJI International scholarship allowed me to receive education under the IB philosophy. The most valuable thing I got from my time at SJI International is a “growth mindset.” I felt that I could join a choir, play a sport, learn a new language even if I had never done it before because we were all there to learn how to learn. This growth mindset has given me confidence in taking on a rigorous academic career in economics.”
“I have always thought that SJII was the turning point of my life. Without it, my life would have been so drastically different. I had supportive peers and teachers that helped me throughout my molding years and that definitely prepared me well for the right university. Til this date I still have great gratitude towards Mr. Andrew Bennett and my scholarship donor.”
BENJAMIN TEO Graduated Law from Christ Church, University of Oxford; Currently an Associate at Debevoise & Plimpton LLP
“The SJI International scholarship was a privilege, but also a challenge to internalize what sets SJI International apart - Lasallian values. I hold those values dear to me, having seen them in action in my time in SJI International, and try to live my life by them. “
17 NGUYET DM NGUYEN BSc (Hons) Biochemistry- UBC 2015; MD Year 3- Memorial University of Newfoundland
“The scholarship helped to bring me into a different environment from the one that I grew up in. This helped me start to think for myself and to evaluate a lot of preconceptions I used to hold about the world. Some of my most transformative years, and endowed a sense of service that will surely continue to guide me in my future work as a physician.”
NGUYET DM NGUYEN BSc (Hons) Biochemistry- UBC 2015; MD Year 3- Memorial University of Newfoundland
“I can confidently say that SJII made me a far better/ all-rounded and an open-minded person than I would have been otherwise. This exposure and the values I picked up at SJII continues to help me set myself apart at work from the typical software engineers. SJII experience is priceless.”
PETRUS BOSA LAYARDA BA in Economics at New York University Abu Dhabi (20112015), MBA at Columbia Business School (2019-2021); MBA student; previously management consultant at McKinsey & Company
“Everything that has happened to me is only possible because of the generosity of the donors. A scholarship to attend SJI International in Singapore was that first critical step for me to receive better, more global education that has allowed me to truly develop myself into a global citizen. After SJI International, I landed another scholarship to attend New York University in Abu Dhabi, which opened up even more doors for me. What’s more, the holistic approach of teaching that SJI International offered me is also another plus point in terms of actively engaging myself in many different types of activities other than studying, which I think actually supported my study in a very meaningful way. Last but not least, the global perspective that I gained and the friendships that I made back in SJI International really play an important part of who I am today. All in all, SJI International was truly an irreplaceable and priceless experience and I am more than grateful for it. Thank you.”
2015
AMANDA CHEANG Double majoring in Biology and Environmental Science, pre-vet track at Rhodes College
“SJI International truly is an amazing school and there are many great aspects, but to me, the greatest aspect is the people. I am extremely grateful to my scholarship sponsor, Khoo Teck Puat Foundation, for sponsoring my two years of education in SJI International. If not for the scholarship, I would never have been able to experience such a wonderful school programme here and I wouldn’t have accomplished as much as I have today.”

SEAN NEUBRONNER BSc Mathematics with Management and Finance, King’s College London, 2022 JESSA ALFAJARDO Studying BBA-Entrepreneurship at Hong Kong Baptist University on a scholarship
“These difficult times have proven to me that my SJI International scholarship has helped not only me but also my family. It provided me my HKBU education and opportunities to send help to my family which they need now more than ever. And I am always, and forever will be, grateful for that.
DAN TAN Currently enrolled in Pomona College, California; Class of 2023
“The scholarship gave me, more than anything, a greater sense of belief in myself... Being recognised as a scholar allowed me to aim higher than I ever could imagine, and allowed me to believe that I could become the person that I am proud to call myself today.”
“The scholarship provided me with an opportunity I would have never been able to obtain financially, and so I will always be grateful for it. SJII was a place I learnt so many more lessons than simple academics, and it has definitely shaped my current world-view today. Although I did not expect to be studying Mathematics at University, I am finding it extremely fulfilling and therefore can have no regrets about my path. I would also like to once again thank SJII for the opportunity it gave me. “
IAN NATHANAEL HADINOTO Studying at University of New South Wales
“It was a privilege to be a scholar of SJI International as it developed my confidence in speaking and writing... I’m proud to have been a scholar at SJI International as that has equipped me with all the necessary requirements to accomplish greatness wherever I am.”
21 CLASS OF
2017 PATRICK STANLEY SOENDORO Pursuing a BFA in Animation at the Savannah College of Arts and Design SOPHIA GOH Liberal Arts freshman at Yale-NUS College
“The SJI International scholarship opened up opportunities for me that I would not have been able to access without the generosity of the sponsors of the programme or the school. It is a great blessing and privilege to be able to attend a school without me having to worry about the economic pressures normally associated with receiving an education. I learned so much from the compassionate and patient teachers who I was taught by, and also grew so much from being surrounded by a loving and serving community.”
“I believe that I would not be where I am today if it wasn’t for the SJI International scholarship. My journey at SJI International is filled with some of the best moments of my life. Friendships are built, cultures are shared, and new experiences that I’ve never thought I would live through. The scholarship, for me, serves way beyond just a stepping stone. It made me more confident in myself and pushed me into following my dream. To know that someone believed in me and recognized my potential truly drives my motivation to succeed in life. I am forever grateful for such an opportunity, and I hope to prove to my donors that what they invested in my scholarship was worth it.”
PHAM DAN ANH NGUYEN Maths Major, Smith College, 2022
“The most important thing that I developed at SJII is perseverance and a good work ethic. I feel like what I have done and have not done in high school helps me to works better in college. I came from not doing so well for my maths in high school to majoring in mathematics, which is not something I would have thought of. I feel that since I struggle so much with maths and have come so far with it that I decided to stick with it. I met some incredible people at SJII that really changed my point of view (albeit only recognising this after graduation); my classmates, Mrs Teo, the other scholars. A lot of what I do now is just a continuation of what I did at SJII: I am still playing Gamelan (I wish I had learned more about Balinese Gamelan), I am still learning French (thanks to Mr. Punjabi) and I am still doing maths. I don’t know what I would do now if I hadn’t gone to SJII because I did go to SJII. If everything has a cause and effect in life, I am grateful and glad of the effects SJII has had on me.”
CHRISTINA WONG Studying Medicine at National Taiwan University
“It was an honour to receive the SJII scholarship. The scholarship was an affirmation of my academic and holistic development and I really treasure my experience as a Josephian and Lasallian. It’s something I aim to live up to, even in university and in the future.”
JUAN BANCHS RODRIGUEZ Studying Mechanical Engineering at UCLA
“I would have never found out that I wanted to be a mechanical engineer without tinkering and crafting in SJII’s Physics Club. The scholarship enabled my stay in SJII and hence the club, which filled me with the passion and craftiness to pursue mechanical engineering in my life. It truly has paved the path and narrowed down my passion into what I would best be able to serve the world with.”
RYAN ONG Studying Computer Science at NUS
“The SJII scholarship has given me the opportunity to discover myself while studying in SJII. Balancing my studies with my role in the Singapore National Fencing Team and my piloting course in the Singapore Youth Flying club has instilled in me a spirit of adventure and a drive for excellence, values which I carry with me till this day. Since graduating from SJII, I have served in the Singapore Army as a Tank Platoon Commander with the rank of Lieutenant. After leaving the force, I embarked on my greatest adventure yet on Semester at Sea, a four month study abroad program around the World. The SJII scholarship has helped to shape me into who I am today and for that I am incredibly grateful.”

MOHAMMAD ADNAN HUSSAIN Business Administration with Business Analytics, NUS
“[Receiving the] scholarship [and attending SJII] developed my fundamental character traits, helping me become a person who tries his best to have a positive impact on people around me. Receiving this scholarship has taught me the importance of giving back to society and how a small act of altruism can have a huge impact on others.”
VERIC TAN Incoming Freshman at Johns Hopkins University
“Not only did my teachers guide and mentored me, they inspired me to take my ideas and put them to good use. It offered me the opportunities and the ability to develop close relationships that I would not have received or formed elsewhere. My time at SJI International will forever be precious.”

“It was a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience a high-quality education which revolved around holistic and lasallian values. I had the best educational and social experience in those 3 years, truly unforgettable.”
SHERY ROSE QUIENG International Sustainability Agriculture and Food Engineering, UniLaSalle, 2024
“The SJII scholarship was a milestone in my life that enabled me to pursue a greater dream than I have envisioned. Without it, I would not have been able to study overseas where I learned innumerable intercultural and life lessons. I would probably be in the Philippines, pursuing a mainstream course with survival outlook, rather than a more open-minded and meaningful one. The scholarship did not only change my values and perspective but also my life’s meaning. The goodwill of the sponsors and the school has inspired me to dedicate my knowledge and skills in something that could help other people and our planet - sustainability.”

KATIE KWANG Hons. BSc Psychology Research and Public Policy. University of Toronto, 2021
“SJII exposed me to the people and opportunities that were necessary for me to be where I am today - and for that, I am endlessly grateful.”
DO HOANG NAM HIEU Colgate University on a scholarship; selected for the Alumni Memorial Scholars program which will aid him as he works on his research
“I have grown so much from all the opportunities given to me by the scholarship. Throughout my three years at SJII, I have made incredible and longlasting friendships, immersed myself in a culturally diverse environment and participated in so many fun and meaningful service opportunities. Thanks to the scholarship, I have become a more global citizen.”

GIVING TO SJI INTERNATIONAL
Generosity and support is at the heart of the community at SJI International. As a non-profit institution, financial support is crucial to delivering the kind of outstanding education that our community values. We receive no government funding but are committed to offering high-quality education to all, through our Scholarship Fund and Building Fund.
By supporting SJI International parents, faculty, alumni and members of our community demonstrate that they believe in the mission and vision of the school and the impact that these contributions, over and above what tuition and fees alone can provide, help us to ensure sustainability of our scholarship and building fund programmes over the long-term. No matter how you choose to support the school; through annual giving, supporting our scholarship or building fund programmes, or leaving a legacy, your generosity will make a big difference. Consider giving today by making SJI International one of your philanthropic priorities, and invest in the future of our students and programmes!
As a Lasallian School, SJI International strives to bring education to all – especially the last, the lost and the least. By donating to the Scholarships and Bursaries Fund, you empower the school to provide life-changing opportunities to promising students from families whose financial situation would otherwise make it impossible for them to access quality education. Although the majority of our Scholarships are offered to deserving Singaporean students, we have over the years offered scholarships to students from Thailand, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, East Timor, Myanmar and the Philippines. Backed to 2007, till to date, we have offered 256 scholarships worth of S$19.5 million in value.
Your donations to the Building and Development Fund support campus improvements and maintenance, as well as allows us to invest in future building and development, to provide the best possible facilities and environment for our students’ education.
The current lease for our campus was recently extended by the govt till 2025, followed by a likely relocation and need for a new campus to be built. As such, we have launched a multi-year fundraising project for the additional space required at our current location, as well as to prepare for the building requirements of our new campus. By contributing to the Building and Development Fund, you are contributing to empowering the lives of current students and the generations to come.
