YOUR SUPPORT MATTERS

Thank you to our donor community who made the 2020 school year a great success for philanthropy at SJI International in spite of a challenging and unusual year with COVID-19 and no ability to hold the traditional annual fundraising events. 2

Your support Matters. Members of our entire community, including current and former parents, faculty and staff, alumni, board members and friends of SJI International made the choice to support our school in spite of all the year’s challenges and we have much to be proud of as a community as a result. In 2020, we received gifts to the Scholarships and Bursaries Fund of $1,000,937.84, and to the Building and Development Fund for $908,351.41, amounting to $1,909,289.25. We are very grateful for your support. Your support to the Scholarships and Bursaries Fund helps ensure that scholarships are available to outstanding students from Singapore and around the world, regardless of their background. You help us keep our promise that any student who qualifies for admission is not denied a place at our school, simply because they are unable to pay. Your support to the Building and Development Fund helps us provide the best equipment and facilities for our students to learn, discover, develop and become people of integrity and people for others. It enables

us to continue providing the highest quality valuesbased educational experience to our students, and the opportunities it opens for them and their families. We hope you will take some time to read this report and celebrate the progress we are making at SJI International with the support of your philanthropy. In addition to sharing the details of the support received, we have also included a story from a current family about why they choose to support the school, as well as stories and updates from some of our former scholars who share how they are faring, what they have achieved since leaving the school, and what their futures may hold. We hope you enjoy reading all their stories and updates in this issue of Humanitas, so you can see what the direct impact of your support has been, and that it inspires you to continue supporting the ongoing work of the school. Again, thank you for what you do for our students and community. Truthfully we could not do this without you. Your support has a direct and lasting impact. Your support matters. God Bless.

“Your support enables us to continue providing the highest quality values-based educational experience to our students, and the opportunities it opens for them and their families.”

A FAMILY TRADITION OF PASSION AND SUPPORT An interview with the Ding Family

“For us, getting involved is a great way to show our daughters that we take an interest in their education. It also sends a clear message that we consider their school a worthwhile cause.” 4

What is your connection to SJII and how long have you been part of the community? Our connection with SJI International started in 2013 when we enrolled our elder daughter at the school. This is Megan’s ninth year at SJII and she is currently in Grade 7; Rheann has been there since Preparatory 1 and is now in Grade 3. What excites you about the education and opportunities for your children at SJI International? SJII offers a rigorous curriculum which encourages academic excellence. But what excites us most about the school is “The Virtues Project”. Virtues are studied in the classrooms, modelled by the teachers, and celebrated by the students. Each week the school focuses on one specific virtue. At the Elementary level, the teachers would read the virtue card, talk about what the virtue means, and discuss what that would look like in action. The teachers speak the virtues language and follow through with their practises to bring these virtues alive. And at the end of the week, a virtue ceremony is held to acknowledge everyone for the virtues used throughout the week.

5 The Virtues Project has created a school environment where my daughters feel safe, belonged and accepted. Their happiness and wellbeing are regarded as essential foundations to learning. What do you do for passion or fun? We are a family of avid travellers and have visited all 7 continents together. We travel to be awed and inspired by new places. We travel to be surprised and challenged by novel experiences. We travel to learn. Our travels have led us on kayaking adventures through the ice floes in Antarctica, and sleeping in sub-zero degrees on a bed of ice in Sweden. In Beijing, we hiked 9km along the crumbling, wild part of the Great Wall of China to the newly restored section. In Mexico, we swam deep inside a natural underground river of a cave where we experienced complete silence and darkness. Our longest train journey was traversing 8,000km on the TransSiberian Railway from China to Mongolia, through Siberia and ending up in Moscow. In Patagonia, we rode on horseback through mountains, lakesides, tundra, forests, and bogs. We witnessed the chaotic frenzy of movement of vast numbers of wildebeests in Kenya and Tanzania. And as Disney superfans, we have visited all the Disney Theme Parks worldwide. Traveling as a family has allowed us to fully dedicate our time to each other, creating a bonding experience like no other. With travelling thwarted by Covid-19, we are still blessed we can pore over photographs and videos to relive happy memories of time spent exploring faraway lands. Why is it important for you to give back as a family? Be it the occasional donation to the SJI International Scholarship Fund or volunteering our time at the school Lapathon and Sports Day, we hope to affirm

and extend the values-centered education at SJI International. SJI International fosters an environment where students are constantly challenged to be compassionate global citizens and to make a difference to the lives of the people within the local community. Building on these values, my daughters volunteered their time at the local soup kitchen, The Willing Hearts. They donated school supplies to an African village in the “Pack for a Purpose” global initiative. They organised a Slime Sale at school to raise money for Riding for the Disabled. A particularly meaningful service project Megan spearheaded during the 2020 Circuit Breaker was an initiative to document the school community’s appreciation for delivery riders and waste collectors with the hashtag #SJIIGivesThanks. The idea was simple: just stick a thank-you poster at your door, add a tray of treats, snap a photo and share it on social media. She launched the appeal in the school newsletter and in just a week, more than 70 students and friends took up the cause. What these service projects have done for my daughters’ confidence and personal developments are unquantifiable. For this we are forever grateful. What would you say to parents, alumni and community members about why they should consider supporting SJI International? For us, getting involved is a great way to show our daughters that we take an interest in their education. It also sends a clear message that we consider their school a worthwhile cause. When they observe that home and school are engaged in a meaningful partnership for their benefit, they are likely to develop more positive attitudes about school and achieve more. Ultimately, the biggest winners are our children.

As a Lasallian Catholic school, SJI International strives to bring education to all, especially the last, the lost and the least. The SJI International Scholarship Programme was originally set up to attract outstanding students, regardless of background, and it has played an important role in allowing SJI International to become a school that is widely recognised for its outstanding academic results within a very holistic programme.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS CEREMONY In recognition of the accomplishment of those students who have been awarded a Scholarship through the SJI International Scholarship Programme, we traditionally hold dinners at the start of each academic year. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 safe management measures in place, we were regrettably unable to host the Scholarship Awards Ceremony in the traditional manner that it has been held. This year, our scholars were presented with their scrolls by Brother President Lawrence Humphrey and Chairman of the Scholarship Committee, Mr Kenneth Li, at a socially distanced event held on 17 September 2020 in campus following the necessary measures in place. Brother Lawrence, in his message to the scholars, said: “I encourage you to be proud to wear the badge, the title of being an SJI International

scholar. We’re proud of you for you have taken the gifts that you’ve been given and you’ve done your best.” Mr Kenneth Li added: “Despite the limitations of face masks and social distancing, make sure that you make the best of the situation and your time here at SJI International, both academically and socially. I know that many of you have been away from your families for a long time, but realise that you will have the SJI International family here with you all the time.”

“My experience in SJI International has truly redefined my standards of education. Through the opportunity the scholarship has given me, I am grateful to have been able to study in such an open minded environment to pursue the subjects that I enjoy the most. This experience has helped me broaden my view of the world, inspiring me to help others in need to the best of my capabilities. In the future, I will continue to hold and implement these values to strive for the betterment of our society.”

“Life is indeed like a tree. We all start from the roots, and we all want to grow as tall as we can be. This scholarship is like a fertilizer that is like no other. Thanks to this special fertilizer, the stem strengthens and becomes fortified with knowledge, the branches grow and surround themselves with others, and the flowers bloom with profound personality. The fruits that are formed from these flowers are my gifts to the world, from which I will share the values I learned from SJI International to people who truly appreciate education and community.”

Ian Tham, ‘21 | Singaporean “SJII’s IB scholarship is indicative of our school’s recognition and reward for academic excellence, desiring to support those who have succeeded under their nurture. It has enabled and motivated me to cultivate my love for learning across all subjects, spurring my academic pursuits beyond the classroom and instilled a sense of duty into me and other recipients alike to be embodiments of the merits of a Lasallian education. I have found resonance with like-minded peers and teachers, forming indelible relationships that I hope to carry into the next stages of my academic career.”

Karin Koesoemo, ‘21 | Indonesian “Being in a community where academic excellence is expected, the values of resilience and perseverance echo throughout my journey in SJII. This experience has taught me that being resilient and persevering is more than achieving. It is also about acceptance, compassion, and gratitude. In more ways than one, SJII has helped me to become not only a person of excellence but more importantly, a person for others. Moving forward, I will continue to seek opportunities in serving people with the values, skills, and knowledge I have learned; ‘enter to learn, leave to serve’.”

Brian Halim, ‘21 | Indonesian

Alex Brown, ‘21 | British (PR) “Through my 12 years in SJI International, I have been privileged to be in a school where teachers became mentors and friends, and friends became family. Receiving the coveted SJII Scholarship was not only an immense privilege but also has inspired me to proudly follow the Lasallian values in my future endeavours — which I am truly grateful for. I have come to realise that our Lasallian ethos of “Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve” makes us truly unique compared to other schools and is a powerful reminder to always give back. The confidence placed in me by the school will always inspire me to give my best in everything I do and to carry forward these values, wherever this may take me in the future. This has inspired me to continue launching service projects and to grow from the strong foundations SJII has provided, to continue to give back to communities whether in neglected sectors at home in Singapore or internationally. Our incredible faculty, to which I owe a massive thanks, has not only taught me to strive for academic excellence but also mentored us to embody the school’s values, nurturing us to become Lasallians with open minds and hearts. Regardless of setbacks, even a global pandemic, SJII has provided me with an environment that helped me to never feel ‘lost’. In fact, SJII has provided us with tools to, not only weather, but to thrive in these challenging times. There is no doubt that I owe so much of who I am now and my incredible wealth of experiences in both elementary and high school to the SJII scholarship and community. ”

“Being able to study at SJI International is an experience that will always remain in my life. The struggle to complete school assignments and the experience of living away from family will provide guidance for my life journey. More importantly, SJII’s motto “enter to learn and leave to serve” has truly summarized my journey and aim in the future. Although the heaps of academic pressures seemed everlasting, teachers and staffs in SJII have always prioritized my wellbeing and strive to alleviate these burdens. As such, it inspired me to pursue upholding this motto and giving back to the community.”

Vanness Valentino, ‘21 | Indonesian “My journey in SJI International is accompanied by two sets of values, one offered by the school and the other by the IB: SMILES and the IB Learner Profile. These values have undeniably prepared me for the future even after I graduate from SJI International. One value that these two share is ‘Internationalism’, or ‘Open-mindedness’. This scholarship has introduced me to a community of various ethnic, national, and religious backgrounds, almost surprising at first if I may say. However, the two years spent in this community have proven to me that this diversity is not a barrier but rather, an opportunity to connect with people from a wide range of backgrounds and appreciate different perspectives that they may hold.”

ABOVE AND BEYOND Jun Ray Hoong, ‘20

Singaporean | Recipient of an SJI International Scholarship

SJI International goes above and beyond the mandate of an educational institution. Lookingbackonmy6yearsinSJII,Iamfilledwithgratitudeandnostalgiaforthe holistic education that encouraged us students to grow at our own pace. The ethos of learning how to learn and how to live created an environment for us to tailor our educational experience to our individual passions and strengths. The emphasis on intellectual vitality and academic excellence is only one facet of SJII; service learning and co-curricular involvement are similarly prized. What makes SJII unique is the trust and responsibility placed in the students, allowing us to continuously surpass ourselves.

interning at the Asian Women’s Welfare Association’s Corporate Affairs department, a social service agency organisation I have been volunteering with since my Grade 8 weekly service. Filled with excitement for the future, I am also grateful for the wealth of opportunities afforded to me as a scholar at SJII.

As Senior Council President, I had the opportunity to fuse leadership, teamwork and community service through our Hair For Hope and Locks of Love events that galvanised our community to stand in solidarity with cancer victims. Challenge Week was a singularly unforgettable experience; I travelled to Western Thailand to prescribe eyeglasses in villages with Baan Dada Children’s Home, broadening my worldview. Like any other SJII student, the world was my oyster through our expansive co-curricular choices. I formed indelible friendships with my debate team, embarked on numerous service projects and enjoyed the stages of musical productions. I am grateful to our generous benefactors who allow SJII to continue providing the highest quality of education. Following my graduation, I have been HUMANITAS 2020

INFINITE POSSIBILITIES Rachel Handoko, ‘20

Singaporean |Recipient of a Khoo Teck Puat Scholarship Circles to a younger Rachel equated to a mistake. A bold, red circle drawn on my work always made me feel somewhat guilty. My school years prior to SJI International have always placed emphasis on correcting mistakes and becoming better through a process of teacher-student feedback. However, I have learnt over time that circles mean much more than an error, and learning is much more than justfindingmistakes.Thesimpleshapeofacirclebecomesmorethanamistake, but a symbol of unity, of wholeness, of timelessness. The SJII community embodied the unity of a circle. The relationships I made were not just limited to my circle of friends, but a community that was bound by a common desire to learn and to serve. I am surrounded by students who are willing to share their notes to strangers, who offer their time and heart to the school community and society at large. Teachers, school staff and a network of generous donors and parents make this possible for us through their effort and sacrifices. I found that we were driven towards something bigger, towards creating an environment of generosity both within and out of SJII, and it is through this common desire that we embody the unity of a circle. I find circles being relevant even in my IB studies. In Geography, we draw circles to represent feedback loops - cycles that amplify themselves. What we take will cause us to lose; deforestation accelerates climate change. But what we give will return doubly; an act of generosity becomes a catalyst for a better world. As a scholar I recognise that I have received from the generosity of donors, strangers whose faith in me enabled me to grow in heart and mind. I grew from the generosity of teachers who emphasised not my mistakes, but my potential, who were willing to give me their time to read my extra essays, and to 12

13

graduating class of 2021 on how I worked towards my own small successes. Just as I have received, I am finding small and big ways for me to give. I recognise this privilege, and I recognise that I am now finally able to leave to serve. encourage me on my bad days. I am made whole by the generosity of faith to see me for who I am and who I can be. Receiving means that I have a duty to continue this virtuous cycle in SJII and beyond. It is humbling to be able to contribute to a Southeast Asian project on organic farming in Vietnam, lead my CCA Comm-Unity in helping to raise funds for the Purple Community Fund, and build Safe Water Gardens for villagers in Bintan Island as part of my Challenge Week. I can now truly say to my juniors that IB is worth the effort not because of the chase towards the elusive “45”, but because our learning allows us to go out into the world and become a leader, ambassador and pioneer for change. This, I believe, is the heart of a Lasallian education, and will continue to be a part of who I am as a learner beyond the classroom, beyond SJII.

The beauty of a circle is that there are no edges. There are an infinite number of possibilities in how my circle of life will end up like, but it is in that excitement of not knowing what, not knowing how, but knowing why: To leave to serve. I continue to move through my life’s story arcs, I continue to endeavour towards a fuller life marked by a circle of amazing people, a cycle of generosity, and a path of infinite possibilities.

Months after my graduation, I look back at my time here and realise that I have truly come full circle. I came in the very first time with eyes full of awe, a curiosity for what is to come in my next two years in SJII. I leave the school as an alumni with the same eyes of wonder, excited for the years ahead reading Land Economy in Cambridge. Just two years ago I was listening to a guest speaker talk about her experiences in IB. Now, I am talking to part of the HUMANITAS 2020

WHERE THEY ARE NOW Since SJI International opened its doors in 2007, it has awarded more than 250 scholarships. Of that number around 20 are still at school completing the IB Diploma, and many of the more recent cohorts have yet to embark on their university education. However, we thought it timely to look and see how our scholars have fared since leaving school and to share updates on some whose education at SJI International was most generously sponsored – by you, our donors. JOHN OOI

Bachelor of Economics, University of Queensland; Post Graduate Certificate in Education (International), University of Nottingham; Student Development Manager at SJI International Malaysia

“The SJI International Scholarship was nothing short of life-changing. I remember joining the school just after my mother had passed away. It was also the first time that I had left home, so there were a lot of challenges that I faced, particularly in the first few months. Nevertheless, with the guidance of my teachers and the admin staff of the school, I am glad that I managed to complete the IBDP and secure a full tuition fee scholarship with The University of Queensland. It is amazing to know that most of the staff that have seen me through the most challenging two years of my life are still working at SJI International. The experience had certainly inspired me to join the education space and become an Economics teacher at St. Joseph’s Institution International School Malaysia. I am also managing the hostel at SJIIM, which reminded me of the days when I used to stay in Katong under the SJI International hostel. I hope to return to my alma mater as a teacher one day when I have enough teaching experience to qualify to enter its gates.”

LEAVE TO SERVE Sophuth Phon, ‘19

Cambodian | Recipient of a Jean-Marie Beurel Scholarship

It’s quite the acatalepsy upon fully describing how impactful the SJI International scholarshipandhighschoolexperiencehasbenefitedme. Prior to this opportunity, I never really knew my ambitions or how I want to spend my life meaningfully. Upon studying at SJI International, an epiphany awakened my passion for Geography. My first trip to Singapore was in 2014, when I fell in love with the urban planning and cityscape of this citystate. The fact that I studied in Singapore for high school really motivated me to pursue Geography as a higher level subject.

Nonetheless, my passion for Urban Studies and Planning hasn’t faded one bit. It is also an opportunity for me to study how American cities were planned and built, which will help me in my future career. Although I may be fixed on Urban Studies and Planning, I will keep an open mind for any opportunity that may come across.

The community has also been kind and caring to us international scholarship recipients, another major motivator. Leaving SJI International was especially hard when you are so attached to the loving community and people there. After three years under SJII’s wings, I’ve committed my future to Urban Studies and Planning. I would like to transform my hometown to something like Singapore and that will be how I “leave to serve.” Life is pretty good here. I’ve just finished my first year at the State University of New York at Geneseo, majoring in Geography and minoring in Urban Studies. I work with the Campus Auxiliary Service department at the food service. I spend one shift making smoothies and milkshakes, and another shift making chicken nuggets and pizzas. It hasn’t been the university experience that I anticipated due to the pandemic, so many classes were held online and asynchronous. HUMANITAS 2020

GIVING

TO SJI INTERNATIONAL

Generosity and support is at the heart of the community at SJI International. As a non-pro t institution, nancial support is crucial to delivering the kind of outstanding education that our community values. We receive no government funding but are committed to offering high-quality education to all, through our Scholarship Fund and Building Fund.

By supporting SJI International parents, faculty, alumni and members of our community demonstrate that they believe in the mission and vision of the school and the impact that these contributions, over and above what tuition and fees alone can provide, help us to ensure sustainability of our scholarship and building fund programmes over the long-term. No matter how you choose to support the school; through annual giving, supporting our scholarship or building fund programmes, or leaving a legacy, your generosity will make a big difference. Consider giving today by making SJI International one of your philanthropic priorities, and invest in the future of our students and programmes! As a Lasallian School, SJI International strives to bring education to all – especially the last, the lost and the least. By donating to the Scholarships and Bursaries Fund, you empower the school to provide life-changing opportunities to promising students from families whose financial situation would otherwise make it impossible for them to access quality education. Although the majority of our Scholarships are offered to deserving Singaporean students, we have over the years offered scholarships to students from countries that include Thailand, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, East Timor, Myanmar and the Philippines. Backed to 2007, till to date, we have offered 256 scholarships worth of S$19.5 million in value.

Your donations to the Building and Development Fund support campus improvements and maintenance, as well as allows us to invest in future building and development, to provide the best possible facilities and environment for our students’ education. The current lease for our campus was recently extended by the govt till 2025, followed by a likely relocation and need for a new campus to be built. As such, we have launched a multi-year fundraising project for the additional space required at our current location, as well as to prepare for the building requirements of our new campus. By contributing to the Building and Development Fund, you are contributing to empowering the lives of current students and the generations to come.
