OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

My View

Office of the President St. John’s Northwestern Academies This is my introduction in The Beacon to all alumni, parents, and friends of our esteemed institution. Having embarked on Veterans Day (November 11, 2020) as the 18th President of SJNA, I am writing this letter with only one month into my tenure.

I am very excited about this opportunity to serve the staff, faculty, cadets, students, alumni, parents, friends, and board of trustees for the next 3-5 years.

My initial assessment affords optimism for a bright future. Everyone who believes in the Academies and its mission must join in this effort and do his or her part, specifically to:

My administration will make every effort to reach out to the Old Boys Alumni Association, Parents Club, and others on a periodic basis to facilitate ongoing communication.

• First, help us enroll every single cadet and leadership student we can find. This effort must begin immediately with enrollment for the remainder of this semester and at mid-term. Then it must continue to maximize enrollment for next fall, the next mid-term, and the fall after that. Having 325 students on campus in the next three years is the key to assuring the long-term success of our Academies.

I trust that many of you were able to view the video of the Change of Command Ceremony, which took place on November 19, 2020. On that day I referred to this new responsibility as a “calling” and took an oath of office to demonstrate my commitment to St. John’s Northwestern. During the State of the Academies Town Halls, which took place on December 9 and 10 and now can be viewed on YouTube, Board Chair Mike Henn was able to apprise the SJNA community on milestones of historical and future importance, and I was given an opportunity to articulate, as summarized below, my priorities and objectives for the future. Priorities for the 2nd semester of this academic year are: Grow student body by 200;

• Second, help us raise the funds we need to support our enrollment goals. Charitable contributions will be an instrumental bridge while we grow enrollment. Thank you for your allegiance to St. John’s Northwestern Academies! As the COVID-19 threat wanes, I hope to see many of you here on campus in Delafield. Our cadets and students would enjoy meeting with you! Respectfully yours,

Establish cost containment policies while simultaneously improving operational efficiencies; Aggressively support our annual fundraising activities.

Change of Command Ceremony Board Chair Mike Henn (right) passes the Colors to MG Paul Lima who by accepting the Colors assumes complete authority and responsibility for St. John’s Northwestern Academies.

In a Change of Command Ceremony held November 19, 2020, Thomas D. Stocks III S1969 relinquished the presidency of St. John’s Northwestern Academies to Paul Edwin Lima, Major General, U.S. Army (Retired). A Change of Command Ceremony is a military tradition that represents a formal transfer of authority and responsibility for a unit from one Commanding Officer to another. The ceremony, held in Farrand Hall, was limited to a small group of guests, cadets, students, and faculty and live-streamed for the community at large.

C hief Master Sergeant Steve Schweiss presents Mr. Stocks with a gift from the cadets and students of St. John’s Northwestern Academies.

Included in the ceremony was the Presentation of Colors by the St. John’s Northwestern Academies Color Guard and a performance by the St. John’s Northwestern Academies Band.

During the summer of 2020, Cadet Eric Baker was appointed First Captain of the 137th Corps of Cadets. In this position, 1CPT Baker is responsible for peer discipline, training, morale, and overall efficiency of the Corps. SJNA selected Cadet Baker based on his demonstrated leadership ability and academic standing. The Roger & Lilah Stangeland Foundation L ilah Stangeland H1999* surrounded by her husband Roger’s St. John’s Military Academy mementos. *Lilah is an Honorary Old Boy – a status awarded by the Old Boys Alumni Association to dedicated individuals who have come to internalize the Academy ideals espoused by all Old Boys. R oger Stangeland S1947

In this issue of The Beacon, we pay special tribute to Lilah Stangeland H1999 and her family’s legacy of generosity to St. John’s Northwestern Academies through The Roger & Lilah Stangeland Foundation.

school through her role as a member of our Board of Trustees. Through Roger’s dedication to SJNA, strong belief in our mission, and personal leadership success, The Roger & Lilah Stangeland Foundation is the largest donor in SJNA history.

The Foundation was created to advance educational opportunities, which it has done with distinction here at St. John’s Northwestern Academies for many years. Roger S1947 often discussed the highquality education he received here and how he wanted other students to gain as much as he did from SJNA. This passion led to his providing substantial educational opportunities for an entire generation of youth.

“It is a great pleasure for us to have the opportunity to honor Lilah and The Roger & Lilah Stangeland Foundation for their tremendous contributions to St. John’s Northwestern Academies,” said Stephen Matz, Dean of Advancement. “The Stangeland family’s passion for the Academies has made a palpable contribution to our long-term sustenance and the welfare of our students.”

Roger and Lilah were childhood sweethearts, meeting at age four. They were inseparable from elementary school on. Even after Roger enrolled as a boarding school cadet at St. John’s Military Academy, their romance flourished, and Lilah agreed to accompany him to the Midwinter Ball. In 1950, they married, and the St. John’s experience factored deeply in their lives and philanthropic legacy. Roger was an astute entrepreneur with greater concern for teamwork over individual success or accolades. He attributed his considerable leadership skills to his education and experience at SJNA. A colleague once described Roger as a “tough but honorable competitor.”

6

The Beacon | WINTER 2021

The colleague continued: “As an industry leader, he was a very smart man who brought a good perspective to any business situation.” Known as a businessman, civic leader, sportsman, philanthropist, benefactor, and dedicated father, Roger was named Honored Old Boy in 1990 and served as Chair of the Board of Trustees, completing his term in 2001. He dedicated his time, talent and wisdom to various causes and institutions, including the merger of St. John’s Military Academy and Northwestern Military and Naval Academy. One of the busiest buildings on campus, our academic building, is named Stangeland Hall. It was built in 1998 in part from a gift from the Stangeland family. In October 2006, the Stangeland Foundation provided a $2 million Challenge Grant for capital improvements to the outdoor athletic complex and residence halls. These generous gifts have contributed enormously to vibrant campus life at SJNA.

In addition to faithful support of SJNA, Lilah extends her personal leadership and philanthropic heart to other communities and worthwhile causes. She supports the Stangeland Family Youth Choral Academy, serves on the Pasadena Playhouse Board of Directors, is a member of the Doheny Eye Institute’s Luminaries, and serves the Children’s Guild for the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. We are deeply appreciative and proud to honor Roger and Lilah for their love of St. John’s Northwestern Academies and dedication to its success.

In 2004, Roger passed away and is interred in the SJNA Columbarium. Lilah continues to champion Roger’s fondness for his high

ST. JOHN’S NORTHWESTERN ACADEMIES AND HENDRICKS COMMERCIAL PROPERTIES COMPLETE SALE/LEASEBACK TRANSACTION DELAFIELD, Wis., January 11, 2021 – St. John’s Northwestern Academies (SJNA) announced that a sale/leaseback transaction with Hendricks Commercial Properties (HCP) has been completed on the Academies’ existing 112-acre campus. The transaction resulted in the complete payoff of debt owed by the Academies and yielded approximately $2 million of additional funding to support Academy operations. Under the terms of the lease, the Academies will be able to maintain control of the main campus as it presently exists for 40 years, including a 10-year initial lease term plus six 5-year options, and will have the right to buy back the main campus during that time. “St. John’s Northwestern is excited to partner with a well-established leader in commercial property development like Hendricks Commercial Properties. This opportunity will allow St. John’s Northwestern to strengthen its financial position and improve our infrastructure, while focusing on our primary mission of educating future leaders,” said Mike Henn, Chair of the Board of Trustees. “This is a purely financial transaction that will enable the Academies to conduct operations going forward, just as we have in the past, with the added plus of eliminating all of our debt.” This announcement comes within one year of two major advancements for SJNA; the founding of a new Leadership Academy which commenced in the fall of 2020, and the appointment of a new President, Paul Edwin Lima, Major General, U.S. Army (Retired), who began his tenure on November 11, 2020. “Adding St. John’s Northwestern Academies to our portfolio will allow Hendricks Commercial Properties to expand its footprint in and around downtown Delafield. Hendricks Commercial Properties will maintain ownership of the campus and lease it back to SJNA. In the next year, the company will start working on comprehensive plans to develop ancillary land not needed for Academy operations. This is an exciting opportunity not just for HCP, but the Academies, the city and the community as a whole,” said Rob Gerbitz, President/CEO at Hendricks Commercial Properties. Founded in 1884, St. John’s Northwestern Academies develops young men and women inspired to become responsible citizens and moral and ethical leaders for the global community. E N GAG ING IN NEW WAYS:

SJNA Introduces Two New Webinars: SJNA Spotlight Series and SJNA Financial Series There is no denying that COVID-19 has transformed our lives. It has made us stretch beyond our comfort zones in how we operate, work, and socialize. Yet for all the negatives, in some instances, it has created opportunities to re-imagine. In late summer and early fall, SJNA launched two new virtual and interactive programs: SJNA Spotlight Series and SJNA Financial Series. The SJNA Spotlight Series provides us an opportunity to visit with alums, in a virtual setting, and learn about their story. We gain important insights, strategies, and inspiration from these alums who, in part, have used the skills gained at the Academies to fuel their successes later in life. The first Spotlight Series streamed in August and featured a conversation with Frank Mungo, Jr. S1983. Mr. Mungo is the Vice President of Temperature Equipment Corporation (the largest privately-owned Carrier Air Conditioning distributor in the US), a philanthropist, and a proud SJMA alum. In late October, we visited with Mike McClure S1960. Mr. McClure shared his journey from his time at St. John’s Military Academy to his executive roles with the

www.sjnacademies.org

Chicago Bulls, Chicago White Sox, and Houston Oilers. Both men provided us with great stories of their life’s journey and lessons learned. Each interview is available on SJNA’s YouTube Channel. In September, SJNA launched the SJNA Financial Series. This series takes on a more informative format and serves as a guide for those looking for assistance on various financial matters, primarily focused on charitable giving. To date, there have been two webinars. The first focused on how one can retain the most control over their estate by reducing the tax bite on an IRA. The goal of the discussion was to set the table for a win-win solution that maximizes the gift you leave for your family and for charity. In the second webinar, we focused attention on the Cares Act law, which made giving to St. John’s Northwestern Academies much easier in 2020. We reviewed how the Secures Act changed IRA distribution planning as well as increases in charitable deductions for businesses. Special thanks to Mark Henry JD, CPA of Julius Capital for being our guide through these financial matters. Each of these interviews is available on SJNA’s YouTube Channel as well.

Fall Families Weekend Thank you to everyone who attended Homecoming & Families Weekend October 2-3! Though modifications had to be made, we were delighted that we were able to host some of our traditional events and introduce something new. Inaugural SJNA Athletics Golf Outing On Friday, October 2, 93 participants (golfers and dinner guests) united for the rare opportunity to gather in public in support of SJNA’s athletic programs! The SJNA Athletics Golf Outing presented by John A. Leone in honor of Rick Leone S1975, was hosted at the scenic Grand Geneva Resort & Spa located in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. To almost picture-perfect fall weather, 65 golfers were treated to The Brute, a challenging and pristine course at the Grand Geneva.

Congratulations, St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy Class of 2020! While COVID-19 erased the time-honored ceremonies that have taken place for 135 years prior, the faculty and staff did not (and does not) let the virus stand in the way of congratulating the Class of 2020. In May 2020 each graduate received a package containing their OBAA pin, commemorative swag, and a “You set the Standard” yard sign. Some packages were even personally delivered by Stephanie Ihler, academic dean, and other faculty/staff members! On Saturday, May 23, the first-ever St. John’s Northwestern virtual graduation ceremony was broadcasted to honor the 42 graduates. Speeches were given, awards were received, and well wishes were abundant. We are so incredibly proud of you, Class of 2020! CONGRATULATIONS! And we look forward to seeing you back on campus.

Patrick Farris, Ella Butzer, Nolan Fritsche, Alex Lanz, Michael McNee, Chase Hayden, Tucker O’Meara, Luke Prescott, Luke Hayden, and Ricky Barnes returned to campus in July 2020 to unveil their class stone/bench.

A Message from the OBAA President

Dear Fellow Alumni, As we have now reached the conclusion of 2020, I think it’s appropriate to reflect upon the positives that emerged from the storm. Outlined below are just a few of my observations: • With many gatherings and events canceled; on May 21, we managed to come together and support our beloved Academy with the single largest Day of Giving event in the history of the school! Over $234,000 was raised on that day! Quite the accomplishment! • In the face of the pandemic in March and mandated by the Governor of Wisconsin, the faculty and staff of our school transitioned to a fully virtual curriculum in just 3 days’ time. This accomplishment continues to amaze me and gives me great pride. • We welcomed Jon Bennett along with George and Janemarie Hillier as Honorary Old Boys, continuing the great tradition to honor those who have given so much to advance our school. • We honored Dr. Robert Hessberger S1970, Dr. Crain Bilwas N1965, and Greg Van Praag S1972 for their exemplary accomplishments and support of the Academy throughout the years. • As alums, we increased our giving participation rate to 7.4% in FY20; up from 5.5% the previous year. • We welcomed MG Paul Lima as our new leader! MG Lima has only been at the helm for a couple of months, and his presence and leadership are already being felt. As you can see, 2020 was not quite the lost year that we feel it may have been. In many ways, through our separation, we became closer. I hope you feel the same as I do. Yet, with that said, I can’t wait to get back together and celebrate with my brothers and sisters of the OBAA in 2021! I have a couple of updates for you, dependent upon COVID-19 protocols in the months ahead… May 2021 Commencement & Reunion Weekend: During the OBAA meeting, the entire executive board will be up for election. I encourage you to attend graduation and get your votes in as a director of the board.

I will continue to provide updates in the coming months. I also encourage you to secure your hotel/motel reservations for Commencement & Reunion Weekend, as we know those tend to fill up fast. The OBAA Chris Madding Memorial Golf Outing is pending. We hope to have information out to our alums via the alumni newsletters and social media in the coming weeks. It has been an honor and privilege serving as your OBAA President these past few years. I believe we are headed in the right direction and with your help, we will succeed.

My Dad is My Hero – A Tribute to Frank Christian S1937 Frank Christian S1937 celebrated his 101st birthday on November 5, 2020. Born in Chicago, he attended SJMA for nearly four years. Frank earned the rank of Corporal in Company C, won the June Competition and the Winter Drill Competition, and was a member of the glee club, varsity basketball team, crack squad, rifle team, and spur club. He was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army and served in Germany and England during World War II. At age 27, when his father passed away, he took over the family business, the Merit Casket Company. He and his wife, Ruthann, had five children, six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. The following is a tribute to Frank, written by his daughter Barbara Christian: Frank Christian S1937 celebrating his 100th birthday in 2019

When Dad attended what was then St. John’s Military Academy, he received a world-class education scholastically and socially, and that fact showed itself time and time again throughout his life. He always referred to people as ladies and gentlemen. He owned his own company and was always willing to take time to talk with his workers and listen to their ideas. He inherited the company at 26 when his father died. His mother also died young, in her 50s, and he lost his sister in her early 60s. Today, my dad is 101. Dad never cared about exercise, the food he ate, or the quantity. He ate as he lived, with gusto. He didn’t see problems, but rather, challenges, and that attitude helped him deal with everything that came his way. I would be freaking out about something, and Dad would simply say, “Just do this” or, “Try another way.” For him, there’s always a way. Even at 101, he doesn’t let anything stop him, whether it’s putting on his shoes (easy for us, but certainly a challenge for someone in his 100s), moving a desk across the room, or getting into one of those impossible-toopen cookie tins. My dad takes pride in being a craftsman, and he appreciates architecture, history and cars. He also has a great sense of humor; with an endless string of one-liners and always ready to tell a joke to anyone who will listen.

www.sjnacademies.org

He is generous with his family, friends, and workers. Even today, friends and family members will share stories about what Dad gave them and how they will never forget his generosity. And as he goes from one room to another with his walker, he insists that “Ladies go first.” Dad has always been comfortable with guns. Unfortunately, as he became forgetful in his 90s, we decided it was necessary to take his gun. Late one night, he entered the room and said, “Barb, they took my gun. If someone comes in here, I will have to beat them to death.” Always the protector, he now keeps a cane or club next to him. Maybe that’s too much information, but I think it illustrates the impact of his training at St. John’s: to be courteous, strong and a man who will fight to protect the weak. Dad’s love of food is epic. Once long ago my brother, John, wanted a cannoli. Dad drove across town and bought a dozen. On the way home, he decided to have one. By the time he got home, he had eaten 11, saving the last one for my brother and keeping his “mission” intact. When I was home a few weeks ago, he came into the kitchen with no interest in dinner. He just wanted a couple of cookies. Before he left, he saw three boxes of Cora Lee chocolates sent by some friends. I let him open one, and he tried a truffle. Seven truffles later, I took the box away. In the meantime, he had also eaten some fresh pineapple, grapes, and finished with a few more cookies.

Dad never gets sick, not even the flu or an occasional headache. His blood pressure is as good as mine, and his eyesight is sharp. So are his reflexes. If something rolls off the table, he’ll catch it. And he’s still strong as an ox. Not long ago, I broke a glass and was cleaning up the pieces, and he came over and lifted an oak table with one hand so I could clean underneath it. When Mom passed away, she was buried in Indianapolis with her family. At age 91, Dad would get up early, put on his suit and drive three hours to the cemetery to visit her. Then, he’d turn around and drive home. The influence of St. John’s occupies every part of my dad, from the stories (like the time he snuck out of the barracks to go to a local restaurant called Shep’s), to the people, the examples and discipline he learned, and the experiences he enjoyed. Dad always dressed nicely (he loved his Italian suits) and always kept his shoes shined. Even when he coached my brother’s Little League teams, he would take off his jacket, coaching in his suit pants, dress shirt, and leather shoes. That’s just my dad. Thank you, St. John’s Northwestern Academies, for your super training of my dad!

Michael Fusello S1950 visited campus with his son Mark in November 2019. Michael hadn’t been back to campus since he graduated, but he said he felt like he was home again. The Honorable Dan Rostenkowski S1946 gave Michael his sword as he was Dan’s friend when they were together at school. Michael graduated from Beloit College in 1954 and went into the advertising business until he retired. He celebrated his 70th year of graduation in 2020.

John Peters S1946 sent the following message in May 2020: I graduated from St. John’s in 1946, the University of Oregon in 1951, and then did graduate work at the University of Washington. Having grown up in the Alaskan salmon industry, it was perhaps natural that my interest would be food technology. I focused on the production and safety of seafood. My work began in the Pacific Northwest. Soon I was asked to join the International Executive Service Corps, and with them I traveled the world. Eventually, I formed my own company and continued globetrotting.

This past February we moved into a retirement facility with a bunch more 90-year-olds. All is well and good here, and we really like the facility. And - we are awfully glad to have moved before the coronavirus really hit. My very best wishes to all the 1946ers and the rest of the alumni. Please take care of yourselves during this stressful time - and long after that.

This is how my SJMA experience helped me to make the most of 30 months in the US Army and set the stage for later life. What I learned as a graduate of St. John’s Military Academy set me up perfectly to want to become an officer when I joined the Army. During Basic Training, I took the OCS test five times, and when I got the OCS interview the ranking officer said to me, “Son, the Army needs inspired people like you. You’ll get your orders to report to Fort Benning Infantry Officers Candidate School in two weeks.” I went through OCS and got my commission, and the Army sent me to Aberdeen Proving Ground to go through Ordinance School.

memorial plaque for your classmate or family member, call (262) 646-7118.

To assist my two sons with their college expenses, I had two 50-foot salmon charter boats built which they skippered. That was a delightful and trying experience, and a few years later I sold both the boats and my company and retired to Bainbridge Island in Puget Sound with my wife, Janet. Together, we designed and built our house on five acres of lovely property with a sweeping view of the Sound and the Olympics. We lived there and loved it for 20 years.

Elmore “Bud” Ross S1950 sent this message in May 2020:

On the first day of class, I was walking in the hall opposite the typing pool and saw this beautiful girl in a white sweater and proceeded to walk right into a wall. Embarrassing - yes, but it broke up the typing pool, and I got to meet the girl. Even better, I married her and we had two marvelous sons, seven grandchildren, and now two great-grandchildren. So, you can see how much I treasure my SJMA experience!

Alan Angel S1952 submitted the following in May 2020:

John Minniece S1950 is pictured holding his SJMA 1950 yearbook. He lost his many years ago, but when his classmate, Chuck Windsor S1953, heard this, he sent him his copy. John and his wife, Glenda, live in Texas. Chuck and his wife, Ruth, live in Mexico.

The science background provided to me as a cadet propelled my science education in the Air Force during the Korean War, as a project engineer on the Mercury and the Apollo programs, and as an engine specialist for Pratt & Whitney / United Aircraft Corporation on the early YF12A / SR 71 Blackbird programs. My association, along with the many other engineers in the field, allowed us to help bring home the crew of Apollo 13. This was where science really helped! My five years at St. John’s Military Academy provided me with a tremendous education. Now as a retired 87-year-old, I’d like to say THANK YOU to all the educators for a wonderful path that I followed through these many years.

Carl Hankwitz S1959 shared the following note: I was blessed to have St. John’s on my resume. I flew for the U.S. Coast Guard after college. Then United Airlines for 35 years. Best job ever! Thanks, SJN! Your education taught me how to “pull it off!”

Those memories returned when I attended an NMNA graduation. At the Beales Drill competition, both Alpha Company and Bravo Company were doing drill team maneuvers total drill team. The Company Commanders were implementing what I started in 1961! And, they were working! Again! Thinking creatively or out of the box is essential when the current method isn’t working. I have been guided by this life lesson ever since. If I have any legacies in life, I believe that setting a new standard at NMNA for intracompany drill competition is right up there.

I am Bravo Company Commander, graduation is a few weeks away, and Company competitions are about to begin. I can’t sleep. I’m anxious. Will Bravo Company outperform Alpha Company? The Beales Drill Cup is at stake. It falls on me to uphold the superior status and win the Beales Drill Cup. But how do I inspire three platoons of cadets to dress right, step off briskly, stay in step, maintain the line, and execute march commands perfectly? I am feeling desperate. And then, a game changer idea. We can perform drill team maneuvers on

Wayne Schreck S1962 submitted the following story: I started playing hockey when I got to SJMA. I was taking flying lessons as well. One day Coach Trapp asked me what I wanted to do...fly or play? I said, “What do you want me to do?” His reply was, “What do you think?” So, flying stopped my sophomore year and the rest is history. Coach Trapp and I remained close until his passing. If it weren’t for him, I would have never done the things I accomplished. RIP Herb, we will skate again someday.

On March 20, 2020, representing the OBAA Chicago Chapter, Warren Marik S1963 sponsored the inclusion of late Old Boy Tom Chamales S1942 into the Pritzker Military Museum and Library’s “Commemorate Their Service” program. Tom, a Chicagoan, was a WWII OSS officer with Merrill’s Marauders; he later led Kachin guerrillas fighting the Japanese. He died in a fire in Los Angeles, and March 20 was the 60th anniversary of his death. After the war, Tom was a successful novelist and one of his books, Never So Few, was adapted into a film starring Frank Sinatra and Steve McQueen. During the short inclusion ceremony, Old Boy Marik was given a copy of Never So Few for St. John’s Northwestern.

Frank Morley S1963 reported in May 2020 that he and his wife, Susan, have been fortunate to have been “shut in” for the past couple of months in their home in Naples, Florida. “We are able to get outside for walks and play golf. I hope everyone is safe and healthy wherever you are.” Frank retired from the paper industry in 2006 after 40+ years in the business. The last 23 years he was in partnership with Stan Hooker S1962 as owners of Midland Paper & Packaging, headquartered in suburban Chicago. In retirement Frank has devoted a good deal of his time to the Western Golf Association/ Evans Scholars Foundation. He was the chairman of the tournament committee that runs the Western Junior Amateur, Western Amateur, and the BMW Championship, which is now the second leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs for seven years. After that tour of duty, Frank was asked to become the chairman of the WGA/ESF board of governors and is now the chairman of the ESF board of trustees. None of the others had ever heard this story, so there were gasps of utter surprise. I immediately explained that it was unintentional; I only meant to blow up the janitor’s closet. When the homemade bomb detonated in the middle of study hall, it blew the heavy, solid oak door off its hinges and threw it across the hall, where it landed three or four feet into Frank’s room. He had been sitting at his desk, and the top of the door stopped about three feet from where he was sitting. The hallway was filled with thick white smoke, and the entire building shook. Annual Appreciation Ceremony This year’s annual gathering of The Heritage Society was like no other. Thank you to everyone who attended The SJNA Heritage Society’s virtual event on Thursday, October 1.

The Leaders Circle Honoring those who made gifts to SJNA’s Annual Fund of $1,000 or more during the 2020 fiscal year (July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020) These annual leadership gifts are vital to SJNA because they keep us on the forefront of teaching and learning. Traditionally, Leaders Circle members have been honored at a separate reception during Commencement and Reunion Weekend. Moving forward, we will formally include these valued leaders as members of The Heritage Society. Leaders Circle members (and those who upgrade their membership level) receive a custom Leaders Circle lapel pin. Beginning in the 2021 fiscal year (July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021), Leaders Circle membership will be bestowed upon those who contribute Annual Fund gifts of $1,884 or more.

Created in 2002, The Heritage Society recognizes those who have made exceptional contributions to St. John’s Northwestern Academies through cash or planned gifts. The Advancement Office has worked to reimagine, refocus, and realign this premier gift club, which now encompasses: • the Leaders Circle to recognize annual giving; • the Loyalty Circle to recognize lifetime giving; and • the Legacy Circle to recognize planned giving. For the 2020 fiscal year, The Heritage Society recognized 139 households as members of the Leaders Circle, with contributions totaling $1,084,000. This included 27 first-year members and 12 members who elevated their membership to a higher level; 76 alums, 33 parents, and 14 staff members. The Leaders Circle also honored 21 households who joined or renewed their membership to The 1884 Club (formerly called The 1884 Society). Established in 2013, The 1884 Club honors Leaders Circle members who have made a three-year pledge to the Annual Fund of $1,884 or more per year. Members receive a custom lapel pin. Members of the Leaders Circle and The 1884 Club are annotated in the 2019-2020 Honor Roll of Donors found on pages S1-S13.

The Loyalty Circle Honoring those who have made past commitments totaling $50,000 or more Formerly known as the Smythe Circle, the Loyalty Circle is comprised of 126 households, 30 of which were formally inducted during the October 1 virtual

ceremony and one that was elevated in membership. Previously, The Heritage Society recognized major gifts fulfilled within a certain timeframe, as well as lifetime gifts starting at $500,000. With the new parameters of The Heritage Society, individuals and corporations are honored as members of the Loyalty Circle for lifetime commitments of $50,000 or more.

The Legacy Circle Honoring those who have included St. John’s Northwestern Academies in their estate plans

Thank You! The October 1 virtual ceremony honored all Heritage Society members and allowed us to express our appreciation for their selfless generosity to St. John’s Northwestern Academies.

Giving your best makes leadership possible. In the classroom, at chapel, in the athletic arena, and on the parade field, our cadets and students give their best every day. May we count on you to give your best to help our future leaders?

There are many ways to give your best. STOCKS

Pay less tax, give more, and improve your personal cash flow by simplifying your giving through stocks and/or mutual funds.

IRA CHARITABLE DISTRIBUTION

If you are over age 72, you are eligible to use your required minimum distribution (RMD) for charitable purposes.

SUSTAINED GIVING Join The 1884 Club by pledging a minimum gift of $1,884 for three consecutive years to help the Academies accurately plan for the future.

MATCHING GIFTS

Check with your employer to see if SJNA qualifies for an employer match of your charitable contribution. You could double your impact.

RECURRING GIFTS
