CITY OF SAN JOSE POLICIES REGISTRATION POLICIES  Our method of registration is designed to offer equal access to   

all. San José residents and Active Adult members are eligible for early registration. Customers can register for any class at any PRNS facility. Registration will be accepted in person, mail, fax, or online. Phone registrations will not be accepted. Registration forms will be processed in the order they are received. Registration will be accepted until the second class meeting if the course is still available. If the course requested is full, the participant will be registered for their second choice or placed on a wait list. Please be prompt when dropping off or picking up your child from his/her class. Children may not enter the class until the scheduled class or activity time. Children who arrive late to a class or activity should enter quietly and join in the activity. If a class is cancelled by the City, a make-up class will be added to the end of the session. In the event that a class cannot be rescheduled for a make-up by the City, a refund will be issued for the missed class. If the participant misses a class, no refunds will be issued. All wait list participants will be contacted only if there is an available spot in the class.

REFUND/TRANSFER POLICY  All refund and transfer requests need to be made in writing.  Request may be submitted in person to any PRNS facility or by email to SJRegistration@sanjoseca.gov.

 All refund and transfer requests must be received at least 14 calen-

 

dar days prior to the start of the program/class. No refunds will be issued for cancellations received less than 14 calendar days prior to the start of the program/class. There will be a $10 refund processing fee for EACH activity and EACH child. If a class was paid with cash or check, a refund check will be mailed and may take 6-8 weeks for processing. If a class was paid with a credit card, the refund will be credited back to the credit card.

MINIMUM ENROLLMENT/CLASS CANCELLATION  The City of San José, Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services reserves the right to the cancel any class or activity that does not meet a set minimum enrollment. Please register early to avoid class cancellations. We will make every effort to notify you at least five days prior to the scheduled course starting date. Please do not purchase supplies until five days prior to the start of the class. If a class is canceled, you will receive a full refund from the City, excluding class supplies.

PREREQUISITES FOR CLASS  Please note all requirements, dates, and times for classes offered before enrolling. All participants must meet the age requirement on the first day of the class or activity.

SATISFACTION GUARANTEED  We want to provide quality programs to all participants. If you are not satisfied with your program, please let us know. Contact staff at your local facility or email us at SJRegistration@sanjoseca.gov

PRE-SCHOOL POLICIES  Please refer to the SJ Recreation Preschool Section

PAYMENT PLANS POLICY  Automatic payments are processed on the twentieth (20th) day of each month. A full payment is required to hold your child’s spot for the following month. Additionally, if payment is not received by the 1st of the month, students will be withdrawn from the class. If your credit/debit card account changes, please notify the community center front desk staff. If you do not plan to have your child continue, we request that you notify the community center staff at least two (2) weeks prior to your child’s last day. This will allow us to stop your automatic payment on time.

LATE PICK UP POLICY  The City of San José, Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services wants to ensure the safety and well-being of every participant. Participants must be picked up at the scheduled class end time. If, after five minutes, a participant is not picked up, we may charge $1.00 per participant for every minute thereafter. All fees must be paid prior to the participant returning to the class. We understand that emergencies may happen. If you have any emergency and are unable to pick up your child on time, contact the community center.

INCLUSION POLICY  The City of San José, Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services (PRNS) encourages and supports the participation of individuals with all ability levels in programs and services. To facilitate opportunities for people with and without disabilities and to engage in leisure pursuits together, PRNS provides inclusion support services. These services include, but are not limited to interpreters for the deaf or hearing impaired, improved signage, activity modification, additional staff training, accessible equipment and facility features and support staff. To ensure the consideration of the requested accommodation, please notify the specific facility where the program is provided at least two weeks in advance. San José Recreation Preschool Please consider the following policies and requirements before registering for a San Jose Recreation Preschool class:        

Requirements for a parent participation, volunteer, snack, etc varies by center. Teacher to child ration is 1:10 or better. Participants must be toilet trained by the first day of program. Non-registered children are not allowed in the class at any time. Please make arrangements for siblings on your participation day. A birth certificate may be requested for age confirmations. The City of San José, Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services provide recreational programs ONLY and not licensed childcare. After reaching the class capacity your child can be put on a waitlist. If a spot becomes available at any SJ Recreation Preschool center, you will receive a call and be given the option to enroll at that center or to stay on the waiting list.Monthly payment plan is available, with auto-pay on the 20th of each month. A valid credit card must be on file for auto-pay option. (Kinder Prep & Little Learners only)

LITTLE LEARNERS

Children will be introduced to socialization, positive self-esteem, following directions and simple learning concepts. Children will work on hand-eye coordination and motor skills, while gaining independence through the use of circle time, music, songs, stories, play, arts and crafts. Food will be provided for cooking activities and may be provided for special events. Children must be fully potty trained before the start of class. KINDERPREP

This class prepares your child for kindergarten with age-appropriate activities, learning concepts, socialization skills, and fun. Your child will gain a basic understanding of shapes, colors, pre-phonics, literacy building (i.e. identifying letter sounds, and writing the alphabet, simple words), number recognition, and counting up to 30. The goal is to have fun, participate, and learn. Children must be fully potty trained before the start of class. FALL CLASSES– ARTS & CRAFTS PRESCHOOL LITTLE ARTIST!

Young Rembrandts classes will challenge and excite your budding artist while prepare your child as a lifelong learner. Drawings like the marbles will help your preschooler master the art of creating a circle, a deceptively simple yet complex shape. The acorn and apple tree drawing will strengthen your child’s compositional skills and use of colors. Basic facial and figure drawing will also be addressed as our students learn to draw a funny clown and scarecrow. These are just a few of the many great lessons our students will learn. PASTEL DRAWING– PATTERN AND DESIGN

This Young Rembrandts Pastel Art workshop will focus on five different artists. Each day, we will create a large, original pastel drawing replicating a famous artists masterpiece. We will draw a colorful goldfish bowl as Henri Matisse did in his Goldfish painting. On day two, we will recreate Vincent Van Gogh's famous Starry Night complete with swirls throughout the sky. On day three, we will create powerful still life full of robust color as Paul Cezanne did often in his paintings. Day four will find us drawing Andre Derain's Portrait of Matisse. On the final day, we will draw as Thiebald did for his Cake Paintings. Each day will challenge us with the pastel media. But in the end we will be Masters ourselves. You'll want the drawings framed! WREATH DESIGN & FLORAL ARRANGEMENT

Explore your creative side by learning how to make themed wreaths. FALL CLASSES– MUSIC BEGINNING PIANO AND KEYBOARDS

Students will be taught the basics of playing music on the piano/ keyboard. Topics include: basic notes, rhythm and theory, as well as finger exercises, chords and scales, all with the goal of being able to play basic keyboard accompaniment parts and fun songs. Keyboards will be provided for students in class. However, students will need a keyboard at home for practice. This parent- child class develops motor skills and coordination pertinent to the game of basketball. Repetition permits children to build their confidence and esteem. KARATE KENPO LEVEL 2/3

This is a continuation of the Level 1 class. Students will learn an intermediate form of martial arts which promotes respect, self esteem, leadership and self-confidence. This class continues teaching the techniques of kicking, punching, blocking, striking and self-defense while adding elbow & knee strikes, multiple combinations, intermediate forms and intermediate self-defense techniques. ARTHRITIS EXERCISE PROGRAM

This program is based on the Arthritis Foundation’s suggested exercises for individuals with arthritis and joint pain. This low-impact class addresses the pain, fatigue, and decreased strength that often accompany arthritis. Exercises may be done seated or standing and also includes optional floor exercises. HICAP

The Senior Advisory Council serves as an interface between the center’s staff and senior participants to advise city staff about activities, programs, and concerns affecting the senior community. Meetings are held the second Wednesday of every month at 1:00 pm in room 7.

The Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) provides free and objective information and counseling about Medicare. Volunteer counselors help senior 60+ understand their rights and health care options. Meets the third Thursday every month. Appointment is required.
