elcome to Sedro-Woolley
ith new housing, new businesses and a refreshing new attitude, we know why SedroWoolley claims to be the most unique and authentic place around. But 2020, had other ideas—who knew this new decade would see such changes. Although we have had to cancel luncheons and one of our important events, we hope that we can bring this virus to an end and return to our wonderful hometown life, very soon. Keep in mind as things begin to open up again, that many businesses need you to remember that they have supported you and your kids in your fundraising activities. Now it’s time to remember all of them: buy some gift cards and share them with your staff and customers. 1. Shop local – online. Online shopping is convenient and can be done right from the comfort of your couch! While going through mega-retailers like Amazon might be your go-to, for now, change it up and buy items online from shops in your local community. Most, if not all, small business retailers have websites offering their products with a click of your mouse that can be delivered right to your door, so you’ll never have to worry about running low on your favorite items. 2. Purchase gift cards. Establishments like bars and restaurants who were forced to close will be suffering right now, with no patrons filling the barstools or booths. Consider buying gift cards for the businesses you normally visit most often to use later when they are officially up and running again. 3. Order takeout. Can’t wait until you can eat your favorite meals from your favorite local restaurants? Many are keeping things going by offering meals to go, and some are even providing free delivery. This is a great way to keep money going into the local community, and as a bonus, you still get to enjoy all your favorite dishes. 4. Increase the tip amount. Don’t forget, servers and delivery people will also be feeling the decrease in business, and many of them survive on the tips they’re now missing. If you’re ordering takeout or delivery, consider giving a little more than usual when tipping. The tip may not go right back to the restaurant, but it goes to the workers who can put it toward the essentials they may need during this slower time. 5. Practice patience. We’re all in this together. Don’t forget that many small businesses are most likely working with a skeleton staff, so you might have to wait a little longer for your delivery to arrive or for items to become available to purchase.

Honoring our history, celebrating our future
O
nce known for our major industries of the past; Sedro-Woolley’s steel, coal, and timber industries have all distributed their products on a global scale. Today, Sedro-Woolley is known for its innovation and technology and continues to have a global impact. A new generation has emerged and continues the tradition of bringing ingenuity to the future: Rothenbuhler Engineering, Sedron Technologies, Janicki Industries and Toussint Machine & Manufacturing are continuing to grow and are impacting our nation and the world. We are a city that honors our heritage and celebrates our future with community festivals. These events make clear statements of who we are, such as Loggerodeo, Woodfest: From Timber to Tech, Blast from the Past, and our Christmas parade and tree lighting. It is our annual celebrations that honor our history and identity and mark our changes and growth. Our parks offer many opportunities for picnics, play, relaxation and entertainment. The trails at the SWIFT Center are now open and connect with Veterans Park on Helmick Road; they offer miles of natural beauty to experience and enjoy with your family and pets. The Cascade Trail, which runs from Sedro-Woolley to Concrete following the abandoned BNSF rail, is a beautiful and expansive 22+ mile each way trail (nearly 45 miles if you’re wishing to make it a round-trip adventure) that allows for horses, bikes, and anyone who wishes to run or walk. There are bike tours available that take you along the Cascade Trail and include a map of marked historic sites in and around the city of Sedro-Woolley. With renovations completed, our Sedro-Woolley Museum provides a charming look back into our history, with displays that will engage your imagination and curiosity. Sedro-Woolley has entered an exciting new era, and though the COVID-19 virus has given us pause, it is my hope – my vision, that people of all ages, lifestyles and income will continue to invest, build their businesses, raise their families, and retire in Sedro-Woolley. As we make well-informed decisions about growth and development, we will maintain our unique hometown feel while providing the quality of life people desire and deserve. In a recent demographic study, the average age of those moving to Sedro-Woolley is 25 years of age. That’s a young work force, and one that is looking for career opportunities close to where they live. Sedro-Woolley offers a continued tradition of innovation and technology and has room for all others to create and grow their business. Take a stroll downtown and enjoy the wood carving and murals. We honor our history, but we are moving toward the future.

Letter about Loggerodeo™ 2020:
T
he year 2020 will be remembered in history. The COVID-19 virus has changed many lives. Some of us have learned to sacrifice things like high school seniors missing out on graduation and many of us are learning how to be a family again by staying home and doing things together. History has given us many obstacles to tackle such as world wars, polio, measles, the Spanish Flu and the Great Depression, to name just a few. We have survived and persevered to keep living and continue on. We will overcome this also. That being said, the Loggerodeo™ board has regrettably made the decision to cancel the 2020 Loggerodeo™ Fourth of July celebration. We have given a lot of consideration and thought to this decision. Because of the number of people that attend these events, we feel that it is best to cancel so that we do not put anybody in jeopardy of contracting this virus. All it takes is one person to get many sick. Our board feels that we all needed something positive and fun for a change but there’s too much risk involved. On a positive note, we are hoping to have fi eworks and the chainsaw carving event later on in September. We do not have the dates as of now but stay tuned.

Education: Sedro-Woolley community is key to student success
T
he 2019-2020 school year has been one for the record books. With the sudden statewide closure because of COVID-19, the Sedro-Woolley School District community banded together to make sure our students could continue learning, albeit from a distance. Teachers learned new platforms and continued connecting with their students through various online platforms. For those families who didn’t have access to technology, paper packets were distributed and collected at both the schools and at meal sites. Our food service employees served more than 1,800 meals each week starting in late March, dealing with supply constraints and reduced staffing le els. Our bus drivers worked with food service and school building staff to distribute food and paper packets. Even more importantly, they were able to connect, at a distance, with students on a daily basis with a smile and kind words as they handed off the meals. There are many unknowns that may be answered by the time this article is published, such as whether or not we’ll be able to host a late graduation ceremony for the Class of 2020. We may know whether or not we’ll be back in the classroom in the fall of 2020. Our students had so many important trips and events postponed or canceled completely. This school year was heartbreaking for many. But at the same time, we’ve seen amazing things happening in our communities. We’ve seen Friday night lights turned on with our police and fi e departments turning on their lights to honor our seniors. We’ve seen schools posting positive messages in their street-facing windows as a way to remind students they are loved, valued and tremendously missed by all of us. We’ve seen students turning in amazing art projects they worked on at home. And we’ve heard of students really delving into helping their families with chores around their homes. As we look forward to the 2020-2021 school year, there are many unknowns. But, there are also key priorities and focus areas that will help guide us in this continuous learning process. Our highest priorities have been and will continue to be to ensure the physical, emotional, and academic safety for our students, staff, and families. Our focus areas have been and will also continue to be on compassion, communication, and common sense as we have students and their families embrace new ways of learning while also working to ensure basic needs are met. We also want to express our sincere appreciation to our community for their overwhelming approval of the capital levy that goskagit.com
will allow us to repair roofs and boilers, along with other urgent maintenance items. We will continue to use this money wisely so that our buildings can keep serving our students for many years into the future. We also hope these funds will help kickstart our local economy by providing jobs to those skilled laborers who will be doing the work.

Sedro-Woolley Museum
T
he Sedro-Woolley Museum has been a cherished resource for both Sedro-Woolley residents and visitors from around the country and the world for 28 years as of this summer. Because of broad local support, most exhibits were built with materials donated by members of the community, and the museum is operated by an all-volunteer staff. In October 2018, Dale Robertson, who has been a volunteer for 25 years, took over as president, while long-time president, Carolyn Freeman, remains as treasurer. The Sedro-Woolley Museum celebrates the city’s growth from the frontier era to more recent times. Exhibits include a re-creation of a frontier town, with barn and blacksmith shop and a main street with post office, jail, saloon, bank and newspaper office. xhibits feature railroads, logging and the Skagit Steel gallery that highlights one of our major local industries, as well as Northern State Hospital and tributes to the military and the town “Founders, Movers, and Shakers.” The River and the Road exhibit features towns and activities that developed around the Skagit River and the North Cascades Highway. Volunteers are continually creating and updating exhibits, so there is always something new to see. The Research Library is still growing, with archival collections, photographs, maps, newspapers and other materials that help researchers find ans ers to their questions about our area’s history. The newly refurbished Gift Shop offers books and postcards about local history, T-shirts, and locally made gift items. The Sedro-Woolley Museum’s annual membership drive is in January, but people are welcome to join in person or on-line throughout the year. Many special events offer a variety of experiences, including the Love that Train event every February that highlights the museum’s extensive model railroad set-up. Upcoming Featured Events Bingo & Popcorn: TBA Blast from the Past: To be rescheduled. Check our website and Facebook pages for details. Sidewalk sale in front of the museum. We’ll have a lot of good stuff. Come check us out! Founders’ Day Weekend: September 12 and 13, 2020 Originally created in 1994 as a family-friendly fundraiser for the Sedro-Woolley Museum and nick-named the “the big goskagit.com

The Spirits that Call the Museum Home with Chad Lindberg: October, 2020 Actor and paranormal investigator Chad Lindberg will return for a discussion about visiting and spirits at the museum. Reservations are a must, as the shows are limited to 25 people. There will be two shows on Friday night and two more on Saturday night. Call the museum at 360-855-2390 for show times, dates and tickets. Holiday Home Tour: December 12, 2020 The Holiday Home Tour is the Sedro-Woolley Museum’s main annual fundraiser. Tickets are $10 and can be pre-purchased at the museum and the Oliver-Hammer Clothes Shop after Thanksgiving or the day of the event at the museum.
