Welcome to Sedro-Woolley
S
edro-Woolley is starting to make a comeback from the pandemic and we can’t wait to see everyone this summer! Our events are picking up steam with Blast from the Past right around the corner. If you haven’t been to Blast from the Past in a while, we invite you to dust off your bell-bottoms and feather those bangs to match our 1972 theme (not required) and come to downtown Sedro-Woolley on June 3, 4, & 5th to join the fun! We applaud the tenacity of our Sedro-Woolley businesses that were determined to survive and thrive despite the challenges brought by the pandemic over the last couple of years. Many old favorites are still with us, such as major employers like Janicki Industries (JI) and familyowned businesses like Hal’s Drive-in. Our fitness centers Riverside Health Club, Anytime Fitness, and United General Fitness have stuck around and we have seen some new places to work out including Finesse Fit and some dedicated to the Mixed Martial Arts. Sedro-Woolley has a rich history and it continues to grow and change. Many of our city elders have memories of the Carnegie Library, which exemplified the determination of favorite places long remembered. The Carnegie Library was on Third Street where the high school gym is now. When the new library opened in the early 60s it seemed to lack that sense of the familiar but the new library on State Street is a great addition to the evolving nature of libraries. We thank Mayors Johnson and Wagoner (now State Senator Wagoner) for seeing this project to completion without raising taxes but by finding other sources of funding. Our new library proudly sits on a property that was once a feed store. Evidence of the Janicki family’s will to succeed, Stanley Janicki Senior with a house full of kids, had to find a way to earn a living when the Clear Lake Mill closed. The land on Janicki Road was a stump farm of cedars previously cut and he was soon working on making hand split cedar shakes. While we don’t have the mills anymore, we still have the spirit of our community that has always seen new businesses.
Now two generations later, we see evidence through his grandsons (their father was Stanley Janicki Jr.) of the ability to adapt and roll with change. Peter Janicki founded Sedron Technologies to provide solutions to third world nations with access to healthy sanitation, clean drinking water, and a steam generated electrical system. Rob is building the five-story building near McDonalds, and Mike keeps various young family members working in the woods. John has recently presented a program on a laminated wood product that can be milled by the machines up at the Hamilton plant. When you visit Sedro-Woolley, we hope you stop and check-out the murals and wooden carvings downtown. As you head out to the North Cascades National Park, we invite you and your family to stop and explore Sedro-Woolley. As members of the Cascade Loop, we are truly blessed to be on one of America’s scenic highways. Camping and Glamping (at our very own Willowbrook Manor), can be a great way to experience the Cascade Loop. Fresh air and views are abundant along your journey. How much you ‘rough it’ depends on how much planning and preparation you do, and what kind of camping or glamping you want to do. Executive Director, Pola Kelley

Letter from Sedro-Woolley Mayor Julia Johnson: W
e welcome you to Sedro-Woolley, Gateway City to the North Cascades.
It continues to be a wonderful opportunity to serve as mayor and work with a talented and conscientious City Council. Sedro-Woolley is experiencing new growth and development city-wide. Our downtown business district has welcomed new stores and restaurants, as well as a beautiful library. We celebrate this growth, but also honor those businesses that have spanned generations; Rothenbuhlers, Lemley’s Chapel, Stiles Law, Oliver and Hammers, and Janicki Logging, just to name a few; all have served our community well and continue to do so.
Sedro-Woolley is known for its festivals and events that occur throughout the year. From Woodfest to Blast from the Past, LoggerodeoTM, Founder’s Day and the Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting; Sedro-Woolley is a great place to live, and a wonderful city that enjoys sharing our heritage with visitors. We have maintained that home-town feel and community spirit, and that is probably experienced more during LoggerodeoTM than any other event and is the longest running celebration in the State of Washington. From the chainsaw carving, log show, and carnival, to the parade and climatic fireworks, LoggerodeoTM provides something for everyone.
Thanks to our City Council, both past and present, there are a number of trails, playfields, and parks to enjoy in Sedro-Woolley. From spring to fall you will find families, friends, and class reunions hosting their events in one of our parks. In addition, we have a number of playing fields which get great use by little league, soft ball, pee-wee football, and soccer teams. This summer Sedro-Woolley will be hosting the Girls State Softball Tournament. We look forward to hosting this event and welcome their families and friends as they enjoy spending time in our fair town.
Sedro-Woolley is innovative and progressive, achieving success in development while maintaining our small-town Americana feel. There is much to be proud of and celebrate here in Sedro-Woolley and we welcome all to join us. I am honored to have this opportunity to serve as Sedro-Woolley’s mayor and I hope to see you around town or at one of our city events. Julia M. Johnson, Mayor of Sedro-Woolley

Employment & Business A
s we exit the pandemic phase of Covid-19, businesses face a new, promising landscape along with some challenges such as staffing issues. In the past year, Sedro-Woolley has seen new businesses sprouting up alongside our amazing long-standing businesses such as the Oliver-Hammer Clothes Shop that celebrated its 100-year anniversary in 2021. The city has a new gym (Bee Fit), a new yoga studio, Schaffner’s Pharmacy is moving into town, and a new diesel engine manufacturing company that uses cutting edge technology is doing business here in Sedro-Woolley.
The Big Rock Woolley Market, with its cedar tap wall, is still going strong and Laura’s Carniceria & Mexican
Store and Pioneer Marketplace have quickly become staples in our community.
Looking forward, there is much reason for optimism and business cont. on pg. 22

Sedro-Woolley Museum
T
he Sedro-Woolley Museum has been a special part of the SedroWoolley community for 30 years. With its celebration of the city’s growth all the way back to the frontier era up to more modern times, it is a cherished resource for both Sedro-Woolley residents and visitors from around the country and the world. The museum is operated by an all-volunteer staff of Sedro-Woolley residents and most exhibits were built with materials donated by members of the community. Dale Robertson, who has been working with the museum since it opened in 1992, was elected as museum board president in October 2018. He was instrumental in creating the museum’s current structure, which includes smaller display rooms. Longtime president, Carolyn Freeman, continues her work supporting the museum from home, as needed. The museum volunteers work to refresh and add new exhibits every year to keep things interesting. After a museum member found old photos of Skagit Speedway at a local garage sale, volunteers

began work on a new exhibit that will be open May 21-22, 2022. (See details about the open house under Featured Events below). The exhibit will include an old car that raced at the speedway, as well as hundreds of photos and brochures. The photos date back to 1951; come and see if you recognize any of your relatives! If you haven’t seen it yet, come check out the new entrance with Carnegie light pillars and other memorabilia salvaged from the old library. Recently refreshed exhibits include the Cokedale Mine and the replica of a frontier town, with a
barn, blacksmith shop, and school house. There is a new front façade on the Dream Theater. More businesses have been added throughout the museum. The Main Street exhibit with a post office, jail, saloon, bank, and newspaper office is better than ever. Exhibits feature railroads, logging and the Skagit Steel gallery that highlights one of our major local industries, as well as Northern State Hospital and tributes to the military and the town’s “Founders, Movers, and Shakers.” In honor of the 100-year anniversary of our fire department, cont. on pg. 32

The Research Library is always growing with new archival collections, photographs, maps, newspapers, and other materials that help researchers find answers to their questions about our area’s history. The Gift Shop offers a fun, fresh selection of books and postcards about local history. Locally made gift items such as candles and hand-saw trees are available, as well as museum T-shirts.
The Sedro-Woolley Museum’s annual membership drive is in January, but people are welcome to join in person or on-line throughout the year. Volunteers make events possible.
