Our Cover Story...... Our 2nd Anniversary issue features a compilation of noteworthy personalities Citipages was honored to have interviewed in the last two year. It was befitting our image as a trendy and intelligent magazine of Kuwait. Originally, we invited all the cover personalities, but many had prior engagements so they were unable to attend the day of the photo shoot. We were very glad for the six that were present as they symbolized the best qualities of Citypages. Accompanying their description are quotes that best define them and their endeavors.

Mohammad Altaf Hussain Sales Manager CityPages Magazine

CityPages - An Epic The clock has completed its round around its orbit and has proclaimed the end of 2011 and the beginning of 2012. While starting the third year as a proud member of CityPages Team I am feeling honoured to share with you my personal observations about some of the inimitable and far-fetched articles published in CityPages in a short span of 2 years. As a member of Sales Team I really feel proud to hear the feedback about the quality articles published in this magazine from our erudite and well learned personalities. Along with these people I am also one of the admirers who have been insanely addicted by the articles of this magazine. It is not because I belong to this magazine but it is because of its quality research work done by the writers who really take care of each and every word written in this publishing. I have found stacks of tranquilizers (Articles) during the 24 issues of CityPages and every piece of writing is a KohI-Noor in the crown of CityPages . It is almost impossible to grade them and at the same time I would say it will be rather injustice to mention some of them. But after a gaze I have selected a few to share with my insanely addictive fellows. Let’s try to have a bird view on some of the pearls from this ocean of wisdom:

Reviews I have found the following reviews very narrative: •Al-Corniche Club •The Day Spa for Men •Let's Burger •Tutti Frutti •Dragon Roars in Triumph Among these my favourite is the Review of Al-Corniche Club. The pictorial quality and style of narration is absolutely startling.

Insights The following insights were found outstanding and it is hard to mention some of them but the following articles of are of their own class and are unrivalled. To name a few: 14 www.citypageskuwait.com

•Dress to Impress •I Wasn't Born a Father, I Wasn't Born a Husband •England's Rose Remembered •Gunpowder, Treason and Plot The Article “England’s Rose Remembered” is the article that has a quality that whenever you will read it you will find wetness in the corners of your eyes.

Checkups “Back-to-School Essential Medical Checkups” is my favourite because it was timely and it was showing the concern from CityPages about its readers who were just getting ready to enter into the education ground after a break. The tips given in the article were perfect and very useful.

Health

Interviews

CityPages Health section is very beneficial for the readers of this magazine. During the period of two years plenty of useful articles were written for the care of reader’s health like: •All About Headaches •Grooming Tips for Men •Sun Stroke •Back-to-School Essential Medical

One of the discriminating qualities of CityPages is its exclusive interviews with no repeated questions. Creative interviews with complete research work about the particular personality. To name some of them: •Manayer Yousef Salmeen •Ahmed Ahmed •Ken Lodi's Bamboo Principle

•Mijbel S. Al-Mutawa •Hamad Al Humaidan This section of CityPages is the most difficult to rate but while putting a stone on my heart I rate “Ken Lodi's Bamboo Principle” interview. The philosophy shared in this interview is a sure key to success. In the end I would like to congratulate my colleagues and the entire CityPages Team for the successful completion of two years. John Keats once said “A THING OF BEAUTY IS A JOY FOREVER”, and we, the readers (me included) hope to get the beauty pieces from you in the coming days.

New Year Resolutions ...and how to make them work

It is that time again when we all make our New Year resolutions, but does it really work. Life coach and motivational speaker Merlin Wilde suggests that a different approach should be taken to the changes we want to make for the year ahead.

Mark Twain wrote of New Year’s Resolutions, “Now is the accepted time to make your regular annual good resolutions. Next week you can begin paving hell with them as usual. Yesterday, everybody smoked his last cigar, took his last drink, and swore his last oath. Thirty days from now, we shall have cast our reformation to the winds and gone to cutting our ancient shortcomings considerably shorter than ever.” Slightly pessimistic I agree, but sadly oh so true. The biggest majority of New Year’s Resolutions have gone by the wayside before January is over and most won’t even be remembered six months later. And the reason is simple: Most are made in response to something negative, a habit or situation that the person wants to change or end. And therein lies the problem, it’s hard to develop momentum from a negative response. It is always easier to move toward something rather than away from something. Consider one of the most adopted resolutions --weight loss. No one can get excited about losing weight because it requires deprivation. It’s a negative response to concerns about appearance, health, etc. The results of weight loss resolutions demonstrate their weakness. The people who succeed at losing weight and maintaining the loss have usually been motivated by a dream much bigger and more positive than just losing weight. They see themselves living a healthy lifestyle. They begin to act and think like people who are in good physical shape. There’s more of a radical change in a person’s thinking and actions than you see with most resolutions. It wouldn’t be possible to effect and sustain such a radical change unless the person is motivated by a big dream that is positive in nature.

areas of your life including finances, health, relationships, career, spiritual and recreational. While a lot of our focus tends to be on financial issues like increasing income or decreasing debt, or health issues like losing weight or quitting smoking, the undeniable truth is that a life lived out of balance isn’t a life of quality at all.

If you’re going to make a New Year’s Resolution this year, make one with a high probability for success. Make a Resolution to develop a life plan. Working with a life plan you’re much more apt to be excited by what the future brings even if you succeed at attaining only a small part of your plan. A life plan should address all

If you were going to build a new house and you had this idea for a fabulous master bedroom suite, you wouldn’t rush out and start building the master bedroom. You’d have a complete plan for the whole house which included the Master bedroom suite before you started. When you approach resolutions and goals in the same manner, you end up with a much better chance of achieving success. So whatever your plans and aspirations are for the coming year be positive. Fix that medical problem that has been niggling away at you, put your finances in place and gain control of your life. If it is a new sport or hobby you want to start then do it, do not delay any further. Get out and play some golf, if you ride then visit the stables and plan in some time to ride out in the beautiful Spanish country side and enjoy the scenery that mother nature has provided for us all to enjoy. And finally, in amongst all of the dreams and ideas for the year ahead do make sure you find some time for you! Get the new hairstyle, treat yourself to a manicure or massage or simply just promise yourself a long lie in bed on Sunday mornings. Remember, life is not a rehersal, this is it and you owe it to yourself to live it to the max... so go and enjoy all it has to offer. 15 January 2012

Five Ways to Make a House Your Home One of the best things about being a Twenty Something is you are probably setting up your own home for the first time. This is at once and super exciting and super overwhelming prospect. Thanks to my husband’s career moves, I set up my first home in London; my second home in Houston and am currently in the process of setting up my third in Kuwait. Because of this, interiors have become a real passion of mine. I am passionate about living well and having my home be a reflection of who I am and what I love. Through my interior adventures, I have found that you really don’t have to spend a ton of money to make a house your own, which is great because most Twenty Something’s probably don’t have an unlimited budget. Here are five tips that will help anyone make their space feel like their home. Photos In the age of digital everything, a lot of people no longer take the time to print out their photos. This is SO sad. Pictures are my favorite link to the people and memories that I love. There are countless ways to display pictures in your home. Create a gallery wall with various shots of your favorite people and places. Not only are my family and friends on my gallery wall, but I also have pictures of our previous homes, college campus, venue where we got married and any other place that has special significance to us. Another way I have pictures displayed in our home is in big decorative bowls. I keep them out so they are easy for our guests, and us, to flip through whenever we want! Fragrance House smells are one of my favorite things. Just thinking about the way my Mom’s house smells gives me such a feeling of comfort. This is something that I definitely want to recreate in my own home. Scent is the sense that is most closely tied with memory, so I definitely want my house to smell great! Candles are the obvious answer to this; I love the Voluspa scents. But there are other options besides candles. When cold weather comes, boil cinnamon sticks in water. It will make your home feel so cozy! You can also create your own signature linen spray and mist it all over your house. Display the things you love. So many times, people have items

16 www.citypageskuwait.com

that they absolutely love that get relegated to a closet or simply stored away. I think if you love an item - keep it out! Why not hang that dress you can’t wait to wear on the outside of your closet door? Drape the necklace your grandmother gave you over your lampshade. Put fruit in your favorite mixing bowl and set it out on your counter. Looking around your house and seeing things you absolutely love will make you feel at home instantly.

Tell your story, not a store’s. Retailers have found a way to con people into buying entire rooms at once. To me, this is a travesty. I believe that all items in your home should be acquired over time. Yes, it might be easier to go to a store and buy your couch, chairs, coffee table, lamps, etc. All at once but what’s the fun in that? I love looking around my home and remembering how I got each piece and the memory that accompanies it. I will never forget when I was with my mom and best friend in Houston and we went to look at a house that was for sale. In the garage, there was a great antique chest. I took one look at it and knew I had to have it in my house - it’s now my kitchen island. Not only was it inexpensive and so unique, it will forever remind me of that day. Bring the outside in. Display fresh flowers in your home. Period, end of story. And it doesn’t have to be expensive - get the KD5 bunch from the nearest florist and arrange it yourself (it’s not hard, I swear!). If flowers aren’t your thing, then put some pinecones in a glass hurricane. Gather sticks and arrange them in a vase. You can also collect cool rocks and stones. Get an orchid. Or paper whites. Just do something to bring nature into your home - you won’t regret it!

Brands should Consider Integrating PR in addition to Social Media for 2012 Happy new year everyone :) hope you all enjoyed your little break. This month I will talk about the importance of integrating PR with social media in their 2012 Media planning and content generating, I have always believed that if you are a good PR, you will diffidently make a great social media example in the new media department for a brand, a company or an agency, so this is dedicated to all of you PR people :) including me. Brands and their agencies need to look beyond pure social media metrics, such as engagement and community growth, and integrate activities with other disciplines, particularly PR and search (SEO), for the greatest return on investment.

Although the PR industry is in a state of heightened change, with bloggers proliferating and print media continually on the decline, actually the PR industry has a great deal to offer for the fledgling social media sector, on the basis of knowledge that has been hard fought and learned in the industry’s history. Specifically, PRs treat content in a very specific way. PRgenerated content tends to conform closely to brand guidelines, will be pre-approved by appropriate stakeholders and will, typically, align with an overall narrative about the brand or business behind the story. Whilst this may seem impractical at first, treating tweets, posts and updates like pre-approved, micropress announcements, to be appended, revised or replaced at the last minute if and as required with content that is reactive to whatever is happening at the time, ensures that the spine of any social media program is closely tied to a brand’s other marketing activities. Moreover, this process allows for terrific visibility over the narrative which is being told across the social profiles over weeks and months, rather than on a post-by-post basis. As well as planning, governance is another area where

PRs have learned the hard way. Ironically, measuring PR remains a contentious issue within the sector but rather than the specific measures that are used (i.e. share of voice, volume of coverage, the now out-of-favour Advertising Equivalent Value, or AEV), the process that PRs use to methodically track, measure and report on activity is extremely beneficial in social media. The key is that when it is used appropriately, the information is actionable – and in the context of social media, rapid measurement – such as that delivered in a weekly activity report – can inform on-the-fly changes to a strategy, meaning that the campaign evolves and improves on a week by week basis. So, it’s no coincidence that more PR agencies are managing social media for their clients. However, one discipline which remains overlooked by many in the social media space is organic search (SEO) – and the evergrowing value of social media content as a signal for search engines. Whilst it’s certainly no secret that both Google and Bing have this year announced that they are treating social media far more prominently in their respective algorithms, the fact remains that unless social media activity aligns with Search, in terms of keywords to be used and landing pages to be embedded, the two remain separate. Again, planning is key as is an understanding of the terminology and intricacies of search, another discipline which feels like it changes on a day by day basis some weeks. Overall, the fact is simply that social media is growing up as a discipline in its own right. With brands continuing to invest heavily, including the mainstream, as well as early adopters, it seems highly likely that next year brands and their agencies will need to ensure that their activities across the areas of print and Online PR, search and social media are working together, not the stand alone approach adopted by many at present! Hope that was a light advice to keep in mind, one last tip ...try to be a person ...online :)

Marketing’s Four P’s: Part-3 Dear Readers…. First of all I would like to wish all of you a very Happy New Year and I pray that each one of you succeed in your own individual endeavor and reap the results of your hard work. May there be peace and prosperity in Kuwait and everywhere in the world. Now to get back to our main subject of understanding the 4P’s of marketing and applying them in your real life, we have now covered the 2 P’s which and Produce and Price. This month, I will explain you the 3rd P which is ‘PLACE’ and is equally important. Let us understand this 3rd P of Marketing Mix.

PLACE age will be in distributing your product. Will you pursue intensive, selective, or exclusive coverage?

“Place” refers to the distribution channels used to get your product to your customers. What your product is will greatly influence how you distribute it. If, for example, you own a small retail store or offer a service to your local community, then you are at the end of the distribution chain, and so you will be supplying directly to the customer. Businesses that create or assemble a product will have two options: selling directly to consumers or selling to a vendor.

Intensive distribution is widespread placement in as many places as possible, often at low prices. Large businesses often market on a nationwide level with this method. Convenience products—ones that consumers buy regularly and spend little time shopping for, like chewing gum—do better with intensive (widespread) distribution.

Direct Sales As a producer, you must decide if supplying direct is appropriate for your product, whether it be sales through retail, door-to-door, home delivery, e-commerce, on-site, or some other method. An advantage of direct sales would be the contact you gain by meeting customers face to face. With this contact you can easily detect market changes that occur and adapt to them. You also have complete control over your product range, how it is sold, and at what price. Direct sales may be a good place to start when the supply of your product is limited or seasonal. For example, direct sales for many home-produced products can occur through home-based sales, markets, and stands. However, direct sales require that you have an effective retail interface with your customers, which may be in person or electronic. If developing and maintaining this retail interface is not of interest to you or you are not good at it, you should consider selling through an intermediary. Reseller Sales (Sales Through an Intermediary) Instead of selling directly to the consumer, you may decide to sell through an intermediary such as a wholesaler or retailer who will resell your product. Doing this may provide you with a wider distribution than selling

direct while decreasing the pressure of managing your own distribution system. Additionally, you may also reduce the storage space necessary for inventory. One of the most important reasons for selling through an intermediary is access to customers. In many situations, wholesalers and retailers have customer connections that would not be possible to obtain on your own. However, in selling to a reseller you may lose contact with your end consumer. In some cases, you may also lose some of your company identity. For example, your distributor may request that your product be sold under the reseller’s brand name. One factor that may influence whether you can find an intermediary to handle your product is production flow. Wholesalers want a steady year-round supply of product to distribute. If you can deliver a steady year-round supply that is of consistent quality, then selling through an intermediary may be a good strategy for you. Market Coverage No matter whether you sell your product direct or through a reseller, you must decide what your cover-

Selective distribution narrows distribution to a few businesses. Often, upscale products are sold through retailers that only sell high-quality products. With this option, it may be easier to establish relationships with customers. Products that people shop around for sell better with selective distribution. Exclusive distribution restricts distribution to a single reseller. You may become the sole supplier to a reseller who, in turn, might sell only your product. You may be able to promote your product as prestigious with this method, though you might sacrifice sales volume. Specialty products tend to perform better with exclusive distribution. Other Place Decisions Product characteristics and your sales volumes will dictate what inventories to maintain and how best to transport your products. Additionally, the logistics associated with acquiring raw materials and ensuring that your final product is in the right place at the right time for the right customers can comprise a large percentage of your total costs and needs careful monitoring. You may decide to have a combination of all the distribution methods. Whatever you decide, choose the method which you believe will work best for you. 21 January 2012

Do Women Suffer as a Result of their Employment?

During my stress management seminars, the topic of stress and the workplace often comes up as female participants strive to understand how their daily routine affects their current situation in life. The first step to solving any problem is awareness. Women, did you know that the current work culture was first created by and for men, and compliments their physiology? The current work culture is one of competition; those who have the competitive edge over others become successful in the fast paced work world of today. Did you know that men thrive on competition? It’s true. Martians are happiest when they are competing because competition creates testosterone. Just look at the male’s love for sports and the importance of sports in the males’ lives. When the Martian ‘tanks’ are filled with testosterone, they are happy and fulfilled. Contrastingly, when Martians are not doing well at work, they feel unhappy and their testosterone levels drop. So, for the Martian, the workplace fulfills a vital need for them aside from economics. When women are within this work culture, they, unlike the Martians, are up against the very nature of how their bodies work. Research now shows that women feel fulfilled when they are connecting and nurturing others. When women are giving freely and helping other people with random acts of kindness, a stress-reducing hormone, Oxytocin, is produced. Unfortunately, at work, women’s Oxytocin production is inhibited, because the competitive nature produces testosterone. Unlike men, Testosterone does not make women happy but actually is a blocker to Oxytocin. When women do not have enough Oxytocin being produced, on top of constant low grade stress it can seem like a crisis and causes the body to produce the hormone Cortisol. Cortisol is the fight or flight hormone. Similar to adrenaline, it kicks in once the adrenaline reserves have dried up and the individual is still stressed. Cortisol is excreted on a long term basis and remains in the body causing many negative effects. With the continuous high levels of stress in our daily lives, today, most people have chronic low-grade stress causing them to have excess Cortisol in the body. This wears 22 www.citypageskuwait.com

the body out and compromises the immune system. If you’re a woman and have any of the following physical symptoms, then you may be deficient in Oxytocin: l weight gain l sleeplessness l fatigue l headaches l migraines l infertility l Cardiovascular disease With the above symptoms, typical questions which arise in the mind of a woman include: l Do I pursue my career and somehow find connection

within my career–will this make me happy? l How do I balance raising kids as a single parent and work? l How do I nurture myself, while also caring for everyone else?

How Can We Achieve Balance & Our Absolute Potential? Educating ourselves about our physiology and what we need to do to increase our oxytocin is the first step towards fighting this battle. The next step is followthrough on doing the daily, weekly, monthly activities that fulfill and balance us. If you feel like you’re in crisis. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a life-changing career shift.

Education.

Education is key, knowledge is power. John Gray, Ph.D., talks about how women can produce more Oxytocin in his books, Venus on Fire, Mars on Ice, Why Mars and Venus Collide, and The Mars & Venus Diet & Exercise Solution. These books will assist you in raising your awareness on the causes and effects of stress on your body and your life. With awareness, you will be better able to deal with the issues of stress and how to balance your life. If you don’t have time to read books, and want to practice your skills the same time you’re learning them, Mars Venus Coaching Kuwait facilitates workshops covering John Gray’s, Ph.D., latest gender intelligence material. Sign up for a seminar and let the de-stressing begin.

Accountability Partner. Once you have become aware and knowledgeable, find a coach to help guide and keep you on track of your progress. A confidential coach will hold you accountable to taking time to nurture yourself and your interests and ensure that you are effective at timemanagement by creating a tailored 90 day plan that will help you prioritize your time and energy for your wellness. You get faster results than following the same pattern of empty promises with yourself. So, in conclusion, stress is a serious issue for women all around the world. Many try to face this struggle alone and end up feeling frustrated and powerless. For those who feel they have reached a stage in their life where their work-life balance may be in need of some tweaking, please feel free to drop me a line and it would be my pleasure to guide you to the best next step in the direction of a happier more fulfilled life.

Chinese New Year Chinese New Year (also called the Lunar New Year) occurs in the early months of our calendar year, typically January or February and this year falls on January 23rd. This is the first of 15 days of celebration and the start of the Year of the Dragon.

Year of the Dragon In Chinese tradition, each year is dedicated to a specific animal. The Dragon, Horse, Monkey, Rat, Boar, Rabbit, Dog, Rooster, Ox, Tiger, Snake, and Ram are the twelve animals that are part of this tradition. In 2012, the Dragon is welcomed back after the 2011 year of the Rabbit. Each of these animals are thought to bestow their characteristics to the people born in their year. While the Year of the Rabbit was characterized by calm and tranquility, the Year of the Dragon will be marked by excitement, unpredictability, exhilaration and intensity. The Rabbit imbues people with a sense of cautious optimism, but people respond to the spirit of the Dragon with energy, vitality and unbridled enthusiasm, often throwing all caution to the wind – which can be an unwise move: The Dragon is all about drama but if you take unnecessary risks, you may find yourself starring in your own personal tragedy.

The Dragon’s Personality People born under the Dragon are passionate, brave and self-assured. At their best they are pioneering spirits; at their worst, they epitomize the old adage: Fools rush in where angels fear to tread. Dragons are generous with their resources, a tendency that at its most negative can reflect a foolhardy attitude towards money. But Dragons in general are blessed with good fortune. They are smart, enterprising and have a wicked sense of humor. They have a natural flair for fashion and are the people to consult if you want to catch up on the latest trends. This Chinese New Year 2012 ushers in the Water Dragon. Water exerts a calming influence on the

24 www.citypageskuwait.com

Dragon’s innate fire. Water Dragons are more open to other people’s opinions than other Dragons which gives them the ability to channel their personal charisma into real leadership qualities. Famous celebrities born in under the Dragon include John Lennon, Ringo Starr, Al Pacino, Marlene Dietrich and Matt Dillon. The Dragon’s lucky color is yellow.

The Dragon and Love Dragons are passionate. They fall in love quickly – and out of love just as quickly. Their charisma and charm is an immense draw to people of the opposite sex whose attention and admiration they crave. Though they have a tendency to treat love like a game, they can settle down when they meet the right partner, someone who’s strong enough not to be bowled over by the Dragon’s flamboyant, independent and stubborn personality. The Dragon’s ideal partners are the Rat, the Monkey, and the Rooster: The Rat is practical, observant and resourceful, able to help the

Dragon when extravagant promises have backed the Dragon into a corner. The Monkey is just as popular as the Dragon, curious, intellectual and fun-loving, one of the few personalities the Dragon doesn’t mind sharing the spotlight with. The Rooster can give the Dragon a run for the money on the fashion-forward front; attractive, wellgroomed, fiercely loyal and committed to honesty, the Rooster serves as the Dragon’s reality check, keeping the Dragon from making promises that he or she can’t keep.

The Dragon and Wealth Dragon years are lucky for anyone thinking of starting a business or initiating a new project of any sort because money is easier to come by for everyone, whether it’s earned, borrowed or received as a gift. Consequently we can expect the economic downturn to ease up a bit in the coming year. Fortunes can be made but they can also be lost: Keep in mind like all good things, the Year of the Dragon will come to an end and you will be held accountable for unreasonable extravagances. Dragons do well in professions that give them the ability to function somewhat autonomously. They make excellent sales people, publicists, political campaigners, lawyers, real estate brokers, actors and politicians.

Preamble I happen to know three young men – they’ll like that – who told me a few weeks ago that they were going to Disneyland, Paris for a few days. Boyish grins and eyes sparkling with anticipation. They were going to a place where belief is suspended and dreams briefly become reality. The entire Disneyland concept was birthed in the mind of one man who saw it in his mind and envisioned it in his heart, but it was left to those who followed him to bring it to life. To see this dream become a reality, he put together a team of visionaries whom he called 'imagineers'. The man coined the term to describe his 'dream team' of visionaries. It’s an exciting idea. All visions are born this way. Wait though. Here’s a thought. if a dream does not go through a process of evolution it'll never taste any sort of reality. But, I’m getting ahead of myself. A wise man once wrote “we read to know we are not alone.” What a deep and powerful truth that is.We read to connect ourselves with the vision, the imagination of others, to share in their passions, revel in the symphonic flow of their words, sing to the music of their imaginations. I sometimes think that the Facebook generation is so information-rich it has become imaginatively poverty-stricken. Over the howls of protest, let me explain. Twitter-type technology can only catch fleeting, ephemeral glimpses, two dimensional mental sound bites instead of the rich, three-dimensional walkabout inside the mind of one talented enough to describe it for us and place it in black and white on a page. There’s therapy in pages – my ‘reading device’ isn’t just dumb technology, it behaves like areal book and I can turn its electronic pages with my

finger just as if I have hard copy in front of me. Which brings me rather nicely to the pages you’re now holding.City Pages. There are coffee-table magazines, big, glossy, picture-rich magazines that sell envy. I don’t think so.And then there are the magazines that people like you and I actuallyread, that become part of our lives; magazines that influence the way that we think, feel and interact with the world around us. Ironically, the ‘Occupy Wall Street’ protest first began with a magazine article in an obscure little place which then went viral on the Internet. Such publications are usually exceptional in a particular way. They might have an exceptional format, a ‘look’ and ‘feel’ which sets them apart, or in CP’s case, our use of the celebrity interview to drive the copybase forward and provide real-life scenarios which people could emotionally buy into and share with their friends. Bill Gates thought it might be a good idea if software could be used by everybody, not just a few highly skilled professionals, but Windows didn’t just fall out of the box, like Athena from the head of Zeus, fully formed and armed. It took time, diligence, patience and effort. CP began small, from an original idea from one of its founders who simply liked magazines and collected them, learning by observing what seemed to work and what didn’t. The original vision was simple – it went something like this… “I like reading stuff that keeps me informed, educates me, tells me what’s hot and what’s not and makes me laugh. I think other people might like it as well. “ At the time, there seemed to be a black media hole. Nothing really existed which provided family reading material – something for everyone – a familiar voice which spoke the people’s language. Its founders weren’t interested in just filling up space, they set a high standard for good quality copy, journalism was responsible, fresh and original – it made a point of not buying in externally generated material to fill its pages – and, importantly, the original team learned as they went along. From day one the hard copy was available everywhere, wherever people gathered to eat, drink and talk. It also went online – so those without access to the print copy who might live elsewhere, get a breath of Kuwaiti air with their morning coffee. The first issue was good, very good, but there was still so much to learn. Visions never expand and develop if the visionaries stop dreaming, stop imagining. Everybody knew that CP was a winner and as time went on and issue followed issue, the original ideas still flowed, good people shared their ideas and the little chrysalis of a project began to grow up. This resulted in a sharper, hipper layout, better colour matching, almost a ‘less-is-more’ approach.Very trendy. One idea caught the imagination. Every month, a celebrity, home-grown, not millions of miles away in Hollywood was a front page feature. Let’s look at a few…

The state of the economy makes it difficult to find a job or you find your life has been derailed, you should consider shaping a new path for yourself, like Maja Sabanovic Corridon. Instead of following the safe path, she ventured into the unknown and new. She opened her own salon in Kuwait, and caters to an exclusive cliental that love what she offers. Customers can flaunt perfect white teeth and a glowing tan because of the high-quality products imported from the US and the attentive care guaranteed by professionals. Citypages sat down with the entrepreneur to learn about the attractive salon offers. Please introduce yourself to our readers? My name is Maja Sabanovic Corridon. I am from Bosnia and Herzegovina, studied Architecture in University of Sarajevo, but life had other plans for me. I came to Kuwait in 2004 to work as a US Army contractor.

As my work contract for the military was coming to an end, I decided to venture out and start my own business. I was not ready to leave Kuwait. My real estate agent found me this salon that was for sale and I saw it as a great opportunity for me to open my tanning salon.

Once the procedure is done, how long does it last for?

Well we have a very highly trained staff that comes from different countries and they all work very dedicat-

Why did you choose to specialize in Tanning? There are many ladies saloons in Kuwait, and as a frequent saloon visitor myself, I saw the need for a good tanning salon. Most women here do not feel comfortable or have time to go to the beach, so I decided to give them that opportunity to have a gorgeous tan all year around. Some of my clients are using solarium for medical reasons as well, such as vitamin D deficiency.

Yes you may come. However, once the procedure is completed you will receive a pan which you could carry with you and whenever you would like to brighter your teeth from stains from coffee or cigarettes, you can apply it yourself. But the clients can also bring their pan and come to the saloon and do a 15 minutes sessions to get better results.

Is your material purchased locally or from outside?

Does it work on all kinds of teeth? Who is not a good candidate for Teeth Whitening America?

How does Teeth Whitening America works? We have a special gel that comes in a mouth guard and it is applied on the teeth. Then we have a special LED 62 www.citypageskuwait.com

But can someone come again and do the procedure before the two years to get even brighter and whiter teeth?

Some of the material is purchased locally but other material is brought from the US. We have a Keratin brought specially from US and now we have some new material from Brazil and it is very special and cannot be found locally. What is your clientele like? Awesome. At Tan-Fastic we have a mixture of our die hard clients that followed us from the beginning and a ton of wonderful new clients. Anyone who comes to our saloon once, becomes a regular customer.

How would you differentiate Tan-Fastic from other saloons? Well it’s the environment and the professional attitude of our professional staff. It is like a community. Whoever comes in, we treat them like a neighbor or a friend who has come in. The prices are very affordable for everybody.

Starry Night Eyes It's the beauty of Van Gogh's starry night reflected in your eyes. The edges of pitch black night illuminated into deep blue and shimmering purple by the celestial stars... As seen on the Rodarte spring 2012 runway, this look works for cool days or warm nights. Follow the beauty how to guide to create it yourself. Dark, smokey eyes are oft left for the colder months as dewy fresh looks take over with the strengthening sun. But there’s plenty of room for a smokey eye come spring 2012. In fact, it was a trending look on the spring 2012 runways from Gucci’s heavy take to a smokey shimmer at the likes of Emanuel Ungaro and Erin Fetherston. But while sooty black eyeshadow doesn’t always feel suitable for spring, the peacock plumage of purple and blue edged with black – as seen on the runway of Rodarte spring 2012 – is one you won’t regret mastering. Perfect for fresh spring days and warm summer nights, and complimentary to a number of 2012's fashion trends, you can follow the steps after the break to create this beauty look for yourself.

Advocates for Healthy Living Thinking about undergoing a drastic change in your life? Are you unhappy with your body image? The dynamic duo, Michael and Bonnie Green will give you the required tips to improve your health and transform your unhealthy lifestyle. The couple has retired to Kuwait and is helping the Kuwaiti citizens overcome obesity and related health issues. They believe in education as the best measure for a strong body and they work tirelessly towards publicizing the pertinent information. They are guests on talk shows, participate in interviews and have even assisted the Dasman Center for Diabetes in designing a good program. More importantly, they have agreed to appear in Citypages as a regular feature, answering questions from our readers. Their clinic, the Wellness, Fitness & Obesity Consultants is jointly run with a third partner, Jasem Ramadan Alkandari, who is the Director. While Bonnie is more interested in the physical aspect of treatment, Michael explores the scientific reasons for a person’s behavior in his published book called ‘The Quantum Physics of Behavior’. Citypages wants our readers to take their health, both body and mind more seriously this year. From our interview, readers will get an impression of the latest additions to our contributors and understand why they deserve their trust. 66 www.citypageskuwait.com

Health Check When did you last have one? There is no better time than now to get a wellness check up. Early diagnosis and treatment of any illness always leads to a quicker recovery. Remember, preventive care is always the best approach. We ensure our car has a regular service and itv/mot to make sure it is in good order to do to the job required of it and as a matter of course we visit the dentist every six months whether we have any dental problems or not. But when it comes to our bodies in general we are not so well organised. It is time for all women (and men for that matter) to recognise the importance of an annual check up for a healthy body, soul and mind. We should recognise that a wellness check-up leads to better health and helps to prevent disease. Even insurance companies have finally recognised that preventive medicine leads to reduced long term medical cost and regular check ups are considered to be preventive. A well woman check up will involve different tests depending on what your doctor recommends. All women over the age of 18 should get a yearly checkup. On the internet there are many sites offering all sorts of information about what should be tested and screened and when and why complete with detailed information and guidelines. But basically, the main areas of concern that should be regularly checked are as follows (in no particular order). Full checkup, including weight and height, thyroid (TSH) test, blood pressure test, blood glucose test, mammogram, smear test and irregular mole check. 70 www.citypageskuwait.com

Before visiting your doctor or practitioner, you should prepare a list of questions. The list should include any concerns you might have. Make sure to bring to the doctors attention any concerns you may have regarding what has been occurring over the past year or so. Remember we are talking about your health and well being here so do not think for a moment that any question is silly or embarrassing. The doctor needs to know all of your concerns to properly diagnose any problems you might have. I speak from experience. Rest assured, no matter what your troubles are, your doctor has heard it all before. I assure you nothing will surprise them. It is also important to remember to call your doctor earlier than the yearly checkup if things just seem out of sort. Don’t try self diagnosis and please do not try and find a diagnosis and remedy on the internet, you will end up doing more harm than good. For any problems at all get a professional opinion and get it early. Taking stock of your health is the best long term investment you can make. If you are experiencing any aches, pains or discomfort of any kind do not delay, seek professional advice and help.

DR. NAZIA NAUSHEEN

Common Cold Oh! It’s time of the year again when everyone around you seems to be sick. Don’t worry, it’s just common cold. This contagious viral infection of the upper respiratory tract is the most common infectious disease. Common cold affects all of us from time to time, bringing sneezes, a sore throat and annoying cough. Let me explain the causes and symptoms of common cold and I will also give you some useful ways to ease the discomfort and get ready again. Causes: Most colds are caused by rhinoviruses that are in invisible droplets in the air we breathe or on things we touch.

Signs and Symptoms The first symptoms of a cold are often a tickle in the throat, a runny or stuffy nose, and sneezing. Some may also have a sore throat, cough, headache, mild fever, fatigue, muscle aches, and

loss of appetite. Nasal discharge may change from watery to thick yellow or green.

Duration Cold symptoms usually appear 2 or 3 days after exposure to a source of infection. Most colds clear up within 1 week, but some last for as long as 2 weeks

Treatment "Time cures all." That may not always be true, but in the case of the common cold, it's pretty close. Medicine can't cure the common cold, but it can be used to relieve such symptoms as muscle aches, headache, and fever

Some ways you can help ease cold discomfort include: l Salt water drops in the nostrils to relieve nasal congestion (you can buy these - also called saline nose drops-at any pharmacy) l A cool-mist humidifier to increase air moisture l Petroleum jelly on the skin under the nose to soothe rawness l Hard candy or cough drops to relieve sore throat l A warm bath or heating pad to soothe aches and pains l But what about chicken soup? There's no real proof that eating it can cure a cold, but sick people have been swearing by it for more than 800 years. Why? Chicken soup contains a mucusthinning amino acid called cysteine, and some research shows that chicken soup helps control congestion-causing white cells, called neutrophils.

Avoid sugar. Even small amounts of sugar can significantly impair your immune function, making you more susceptible to a flu infection. A large amount of sugar, such as the amount found in a normal can of soda, hurts your immune function for hours. Get enough sleep. Your immune

system functions much better when you get enough sleep. Most people really need about 8 hours per night for optimal health. If your body is fatigued, it simply won't be able to fight off the flu virus (or any other infection) very well.

Fresh raw or lightly-cooked garlic - Garlic has strong natural anti-

viral properties that can help to fight off a flu virus. Also, garlic provides a strong boost to your immune system, especial-

ly when eaten on a regular basis.

Green Tea - Like garlic, green tea has shown the ability to both kill viruses and to stimulate the immune system to fight off flu infections, especially when used daily. Try to drink 3-6 cups of strong green tea per day during the flu season. Cayenne Pepper - Cayenne has a

long list of health benefits and is believed to be a mild immune-booster. Also, cayenne contains large amounts of natural vitamin A, considered to be an important "anti-infection" nutrient.

Get fresh air every day. During the winter the dry heat from indoor heating systems dries out your mucous membranes and makes you more susceptible to viruses. If you can, during the day, crack open a window or two to give your body some relief. Don't smoke... and avoid smoke-

filled places. First and second-hand smoke significantly impairs your immune system. It also dries out your nasal passages and paralyzes cilia; the small hairs in your nose and lungs that help keep out viruses.

Take regular saunas. Many experts believe that taking a sauna several times a week can help to keep you from getting the flu. Many people, especially in Europe, take saunas just for this reason. The air you breathe in a sauna is too hot for cold and flu viruses to survive. Exercise regularly. Exercise helps

keep your immune system strong. In fact, a recent study showed that mice that performed mild exercise as soon as they were exposed to the flu virus had much lower death rates. I hope you will find some of the above precautions and tips useful. Till next month, stay healthy! 71 January 2012

Many artists and famous celebrities often say their background influenced their creativity, Adrian Richardson is no different. He accredits the way he grew up around food for his love and artistic creativity in cooking. Although he was always comfortable around food, he didn’t realize he wanted to pursue a career as a chef until his year 12. Luckily, he was already working in a kitchen and could easily choose to start an apprenticeship to develop his skills. When he started his own restaurant La Luna Bistro, it was difficult. With his expertise and dedication, he enabled his dream to flourish. As the chef; he has fun experimenting with different tastes and so, The La Luna Bistro has a fanbase for his specialty dishes. His stint on TV has made him well-known: he appeared on ‘Jamie’s Kitchen Australia’, ‘Ready Steady Cook’ and other notable shows. He has also released many amazing recipe books that are filled with delicious recipes. The popular Chef took a break from his hectic schedule, to tantalize Citypages with a few good recipes and an exclusive interview. How did your love for food started? My love of food started at a very early age, all of my family are fantastic cooks, and I grew up in my grandmothers kitchen, she was an Italian that had grown up in Cairo, Egypt, and cooked and amazing mixture of Italian and Middle Eastern food.

Who else is a Chef in the family or loves cooking? My grandfather on my father’s side was a well known chef, he and his wife (my grandmother) were vegetarians and amazing cooks, they baked bread and grew all of their own vegetables and fruit. Some of my uncles also spent time in kitchens as chefs and I was lucky enough to have spent time working with all of them in restaurant kitchens.

I heard you became a pilot at 16, is that right? When I was 16 I lost interest in school, so I took 6 months off, in that time with a little help from my father (who was an airline pilot) I studied and got my student pilots license, I was able to fly a plane in Australia before I could even drive a car. Being able to fly at such a young age gave me the confidence to go back to school and finish my schooling with "flying" colours, as it made me realize that anything is possible if you put your mind to it.

Did you take any formal culinary training? Where? My training was very formal, I completed a four year apprenticeship. I would go to school one day a week and work for four days. I was lucky to be working at the Victorian Arts Centre, which was staffed by some of

72 www.citypageskuwait.com

the most talented chefs of the day, I learnt a great deal during this period and made strong friendships that have lasted to this day.

Tell us about your restaurant La Luna Bistro? What is special about it? When I had finished my training and travelled the world cooking, I wanted to settle down in my hometown and open a restaurant. I wanted a place that I would feel comfortable dining in, friendly well-trained staff, simple environment and food that is all made in house. I wanted to open a simple eating-house, a type of place that anyone would feel comfortable at anytime of the week. I wanted a place you could drop by and have a bowl of hearty soup, fresh baked bread on your way home from work or to dine with any number of friends, over seven or eight courses and of course everything else in between. My priority has always been that we make everything in house, from small goods to bread and pasta. We have a herb garden outside the restaurant and two beehives on our roof, that produce the most amazing flavoured honey.

Do you have any expansion plans for the restaurant? I have many opportunities to open several other La Luna’s over the years, and I probably will one day, but at the moment I am enjoying just running the one restaurant.

What is ‘modern Mediterranean’? Can you explain? Modern Mediterranean style of cuisine tries to use the flavours, styles and ingredients that can be found all

around the Mediterranean, North African, Middle Eastern and European. I think that there great variety in the cuisines around the Mediterranean and that these cuisines have been blending together for thousands of years, to create some wonderful flavours.

Can you briefly tell us about the books you have authored? In my first book ‘Meat’ I wanted to share my passion for cooking all things meat. I have spent many years, working with and perfecting my skills with meat. I wanted to put together a book that would make it easy for people at home to cook all types of meat in many different ways, in many ways I have achieved this, ‘Meat’ is now in its second print and is still selling very well around the world My second book is more about the more simple things in life, called ‘The Good Life’ I wanted to share my love of cooking at home and sharing great food with the people that I love. Having grown up with a family that were all great cooks, some of my best experiences have been eating with family and friends. I wanted to write a book that would help people to make simple yet amazing food at home.

Any new book coming out soon? I thought I could take a break from writing books for a while but my publishers have been so happy with the sales of my first two books that they are encouraging me to write a third, I’m not quite sure what its going to be about yet, but fingers crossed it will be as good as the first two

I also realize that you are an expert in meat? How did that happen?

Spreading the Love of Fine Cuisine

I don’t really feel like an expert on anything, in fact I’m quite flattered when people say I am, although the fact that I’ve written a book on the subject and run a successful restaurant that serves plenty of meat should tell me otherwise.

What are the common misconceptions that people have about meat? Many people expect all good meat to be tender, this is not always the case. Meat is basically muscle that works. The more a muscle works the tougher it becomes, the tougher the muscle the more you have to cook it. I think that its the tougher cuts (or secondary cuts) that are the best, when cooked low and slow with spices, herbs, stock and tomatoes, these cuts can be the most rewarding, tender, moist and tasty, and best of all they are usually the cheapest cuts to buy.

What is the best age to start learning to cook? Its never to early to learn how to cook, I think that if kids become involved in cooking the family meal they are more like to eat and enjoy their food, and you know how fussy young kids can be.

What is your favorite food from the Arab world? I have yet to visit the Arab world and my understanding is that the real food is cooked in the home, where the word hospitality takes on a whole new meaning. One of the dishes I know Australia and the Arab world love is lamb, slow cooked lamb on rice is one of my favourite dishes.

What is the strangest part or piece of meat that you have eaten? Probably the strangest thing I have eaten so far is bulls testicals, considered quite a delicacy in other parts of the world, they are not so popular here in Australia.

Your message for us at CityPages magazine? I hope to see you soon, I can’t wait to eat my way around the Arab world.

Tell our readers some of your television experiences? I have been cooking on TV for about 6 years, I really enjoy working on TV. I love being able to share my love for food and my cooking skills, it’s sort of like teaching lots of people at the one time. But the most important thing is that I enjoy the people I work with on TV, they make it fun and easy for me.

How was the experience at the Master Chef Australia? I enjoyed master chef, although it was a bit daunting knowing that 2 million people would be watching,

Do you have a special secret ingredient? My secret ingredient is herbs, lots of them and the fresher the better, and of course the best herbs are the ones you grow yourself.

Roast beef fillet with Thyme n

1.4 kg eye-fillet of beef

n

olive oil

n

1 teaspoon salt

n

1 tablespoon freshly ground black pepper

n

3 tablespoons roughly chopped thyme

n

hot English mustard to serve

Serves 6

Preheat the oven to 180°C. Tuck the thin tail-end of the fi llet underneath so that the beef is an even thickness all along its length. Tie securely with butcher’s string at 5 cm intervals. Smear a thin coating of oil all over the beef, season with salt and pepper, and rub on the thyme. Heat a few tablespoons of oil in a heavy-based frying pan. When it is very hot, brown the beef fi llet all over. Transfer to a wire rack inside a roasting tray and roast for 12–15 minutes, or until the internal core temperature reaches 38°C on a meat thermometer, indicating the beef is cooked rare. (If you prefer your beef cooked longer, 45°C indicates medium–rare, 55°C medium and 65°C medium–well done.) Keep in mind that the temperature will continue rising by about 5°C once you take the meat from the oven. When the beef is cooked to your liking, cover with foil and leave to rest for at least 10 minutes in a warm place. To serve, snip away the string and carve the beef into thick slices. Serve with hot English mustard and roasted vegetables.

Beef fillet is always a good choice for special occasions. In fact, it’s the perfect cut for a dinner party or buffet table as it looks beautiful and you can cut it into neat, even slices. The most important thing to remember is not to overcook it, and to let it rest for a decent length of time. Serve it with hot English mustard and roasted root vegetables. 77 January 2012

To my way of thinking, the forequarter or shoulder of lamb is one of the very best parts, albeit not as popular as the leg. It is perfectly suited to long, slow cooking, when it becomes meltingly soft and tender. In this wintery braise, the eggplant cooks down to a thick sauce, and all you’ll need by way of accompaniment is some warm crusty bread. When you ask your butcher for a boned lamb shoulder, ask for the bones as well (and get him to cut them for you). Then, you can make your own wonderful lamb stock for braising the lamb.

freshly ground black pepper

n

grated zest of 1/2 lemon

n

2 tablespoons roughly chopped thyme

n

1 teaspoon dried oregano

n

1/3 cup roughly chopped rosemary leaves

n

8 garlic cloves, crushed

n

125 ml olive oil

n

2 medium onions, fi nely diced

n

1 teaspoon fennel seeds

n

2 large eggplants, cut into 2 cm dice

n

1 litre lamb or chicken stock

n

juice of 2 lemons

n

1/2 cup roughly chopped fl at-leaf parsley

Preheat the oven to 160°C. Open out the lamb shoulder on your work surface. Season the meat with salt and pepper, then rub with the lemon zest, thyme and oregano, half the rosemary and a quarter of the garlic.

Serves 6

Roll the shoulder up into a fat log and tie securely with butcher’s string at 3 cm intervals. Heat the oil in a pot and brown the lamb shoulder all over. Transfer to a plate. Add the onion, fennel seeds and remaining rosemary and garlic to the pot and fry gently for 3–4 minutes, until the onion is soft but not coloured. Add the celery and carrot and fry for 2–3 minutes. Add the eggplant and fry for a further 4–5 minutes, stirring from time to time. Return the lamb to the pot and pour in the stock. The meat should be just about submerged in the liquid. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer, covered, for 21/2–3 hours. Before serving, stir in the lemon juice and parsley. 79 January 2012

Ricotta gnocchi with Chive Butter and Peas n n n n n n n n n n n n n

500 g fresh ricotta, mashed with a fork 100 g parmesan, grated 1 egg, lightly beaten 150 g plain fl our freshly grated parmesan to serve 150g butter 1 garlic clove, crushed 1 cup peas, blanched 3 tablespoons snipped chives 2 tablespoons chopped flat-leaf parsley salt freshly ground black pepper

Bring a pot of salted water to a boil, ready to cook the gnocchi. Combine the ricotta, parmesan and egg in a large mixing bowl and lightly mash them all together. Sift on three-quarters of the fl our and use your hands to mix it in gently. Add more, as required, until the dough just holds together. It should be very soft.

Serves 4

Divide the dough into 3 pieces and place on a lightly fl oured work surface. Roll the pieces into long cigars and cut into 2 cm lengths. Handle the gnocchi gently as they will be quite fragile. To make the sauce, melt the butter in a large heavy-based frying pan. Add the garlic and fry gently for 3–4 minutes, then stir in the peas, chives and parsley. Season with salt and pepper and keep over a very low heat while you cook the gnocchi. Adjust the temperature under the pot of water to give you a gentle rolling boil. Drop in half of the gnocchi, a few at a time, stirring very gently as you do so to keep the water moving. After about 3–4 minutes they will rise to the surface, indicating they are cooked. Lift them out with a slotted spoon and transfer to the frying pan while you cook the remaining gnocchi. Gently toss all the gnocchi in the sauce and serve straight away with grated parmesan.

Ricotta gnocchi are a breeze to make, but are best if you use good quality fresh ricotta from a delicatessen or Italian food store, rather than the mass-produced stuff you find in the supermarket. I serve the gnocchi with a simple chive-butter sauce so as not to overpower the mild, fresh flavour. The quantity of flour you need will vary depending on the ricotta. I recommend you add three-quarters of the flour, then the rest a little at a time, just until the mixture holds together.

Al Roshinah The 5 Star Authentic Kuwaiti Cuisine Restaurant Arab Food has enticed people for years with its own unique flavour and taste. Thousands visit Arab restaurants to relish delectable Arab cuisine, foreigners and locals alike. I have been living in Kuwait for a long time and have come to appreciate the flavours of Arabic cuisine. Whenever any of my business friends visit, I try to take him to well-known Arabic restaurants where we can enjoy the delicious and traditional recipes of Kuwait. There are many good quality local restaurants, but none I can satisfactorily say that is the epitome of Kuwait culture and cuisine. Until my friend told me about a newly opened Five Star Kuwaiti Restaurant in Safir Fintas Hotel. He was full of praise and esteemed words for it, and his enthusiasm was infectious. Al Roshinah is situated in Safir Fintas Hotel. Simply call to facilitate a prior booking.

I decided that my family would accompany me on a visit to this well-talked about restaurant. Work kept me occupied, but I was finally able to take a break from my hectic schedule and drive with my family to the destination. As soon I drove to the Safir Fintas area, I noticed the restaurant was to the left side of the reception area. At first glance, I understood the nature of the restaurant. Its appearance is strongly influenced by Kuwaiti tradition, which is high-class and exotic. I noticed many motifs from Arab

Elephant Chair by Chales

& Ray Eames Almost no other animal enjoys such popularity as the elephant. Admired for its majestic size and loved for its proverbial good-humour, it is part of our everyday experience as a child's cuddly toy, a storybook character and a majestic creature. Charles and Ray Eames also succumbed to their charms and in 1945 designed a toy elephant made of plywood. However, it never made it into mass production. The Eames elephant is now available for the first time in a plastic version for those it was originally intended for: children. Whether used as a toy (also outdoors) or a decorative item in a children's room - this friendly-looking animal with its distinctive, over-sized ears is bound to bring cheer and enjoyment to many a child's and parent's heart. 86 www.citypageskuwait.com

NO ROOM FOR PALESTINIAN ARTIST

French fashion brand demands the removal of Bethlehem artist Larissa Sansour from major photographic prize. A highly regarded artist, she is recognized for her imaginative and thought-provoking art pieces. The social and political issues of Palestine and the Middle East are intricately woven into her art that integrate all sorts of visual forms. Many who have viewed her art see it as moving from grandiose to humorous yet projecting a deeper meaning, often deriving inspiration from film language and pop culture. She has received recognition and laurels for her imaginative approach to a complex subject. Sansour’s work features in galleries, museums, publications and film festivals worldwide. Solo exhibitions, headlining her talent, have occurred at Kulturhset in Stockholm, Galerie La B.A.N.K in Paris, DEPO in Istanbul and Jack the Pelican in New York. Larissa Sansour has many fans especially lovers of Sci-fi. One fan praised on his blog Sansour’s multimedia project ‘Nation Estate’, the dystopic sci-fi cum fantasy representation of a futuristic Palestinian nation within an estate. Citypages was honored with the opportunity to converse with Sansour on her artistry and the controversy she found herself ensnared in. Please introduce yourself to our readers? I was born in Jerusalem and grew up in Bethlehem. My work is interdisciplinary immersed in the current political dialogue and utilizes video, photography, installation, the internet and the book form.

Tell us about your education? I studied fine art, art criticism and art history in London, New York and Copenhagen.

How did the experience at New York differ compared to studying in Copenhagen? I think each place has its pros and cons. New York offers a fantastic environment for artists, with virtually unlimited sources of exhibitions, sources of inspiration, dialogue with fellow artists, etc., whereas Copenhagen is a much smaller and less bustling place, and that in turn allows for a sharpening of focus.

Were there any professors that influenced or supported you at these places? Regardless of the country and the institution, I always had great support from my professors.

What is your full time job? My full time job is my artistic practice.

Who inspired you to select art? Who else in the family is creative? Since I was a child I spent a lot of time drawing and painting. I have never even questioned being something other than an artist. I always associated art with strength and power and the freedom to address issues that would have been difficult through other mediums. I suppose my family is also involved in the creative business, my sister works a lot with documentary films among other things. My brother has appeared in vari-

88 www.citypageskuwait.com

ous films and in my own video work. So the atmosphere within my family has always encouraged artistic pursuits.

Kindly describe your form of art? What would you call it? Most of my work is video. For me, though, it is often the content that dictates the medium. In the case of Palestine, video is often necessary as it documents the reality on the ground in a way that other mediums have a hard time doing. My work is engaged in political and social issues mostly pertaining to the Middle East, it is often performative and utilises new media.

Have you had a difficult time developing your own style? I think it is always hard to be boxed into a category or a style. I think being an artist is creating your own think tank, it is a lifelong investigation of your own practice and its relation to the outside world.

What according to you is the best form of art? It is hard for me to speak in absolutist terms when it comes to this question. I tend to be most interested in art that is engaged in current social and political issues.

I see that you have done quite a bit of collaborations. Tell us about some good experiences from them? Being in a collaboration forces you to surrender some degree of control over your work and this give and take is something that I find valuable when collaborating with other artists. No matter what obstacles we experience along the way, I always find that the process itself is extremely rewarding.

How did your early work differ from what you're doing now? My newer work is more surreal and exaggerated. I am interested in creating imaginary worlds and settings in which current world issues can be addressed and framed in new and alternative ways.

Can you describe your studio? Do you work in your studio every day? I work way too much in my studio. My studio is at home, which makes the separation line between private and working life very blurry. I often work until very late at night. Both my desktop and my actual desk are flooded with documents and notes.

Tell us more about your graphic novel ‘ The Novel of Nonel and Vovel’? The Novel of Nonel and Vovel is a graphic art novel in which you see me and artist Oreet Ashery transformed into superheros after contracting a virus. The story explains how we lose our artistic powers in exchange for superhuman powers. We decide to use our newly gained powers to go and save Palestine and through that make clear the daily sufferings that Palestinians are subjugated to from chekpoints to human right violations. Although humorous in its approach, the book poses uncomfortable and rigorous questions and, I think, is unique in its take on the process of collaboration between two artists. Now and again a variety of politically charged games adds a grain of entertainment. In combination, the various elements of the book create a multi-layered, yet cohesive narrative offering a unique perspective on contemporary art in the Middle East and internationally while rendering the act of creating the graphic novel (the ‘artistic product’) transparent.

“I am very sad and shocked by this development. This year Palestine was officially admitted to UNESCO, yet we are still being silenced. As a politically involved artist I am no stranger to opposition, but never before have I been censored by the very same people who nominated me in the first place. Lacoste’s prejudice and censorship puts a major dent in the idea of corporate involvement in the arts. It is deeply worrying.”

LARISSA SANSOUR 89 January 2012

pened exactly? I was contacted by the prize organizers in October informing me that I was nominated for the prize. I never applied or asked to be nominated, it just came out of the blue. As a first step, I was given 4,000 euros and complete artistic freedom to develop a proposal for their Lacoste L'Elysée prize 2011. After working on a series of sketches, I submitted three images by midNovember. Upon seeing my work, the museum congratulated me on my work and professionalism. It was not until mid December that I got an unexpected call from the museum saying that Lacoste wanted my name removed from the list of nominees as they thought that my work was "too pro-Palestinian" for them to support. The competition, I was informed, would go on without me. This, of course, came as a shock to me. As a Palestinian artist, I am used to adversity, but to be censored by the same people who nominated me in the first place was a new experience for me. I decided to go public with this and issued a press release. The story picked up fast. In a matter of no time, I was contacted by the BBC, the Guardian, The Independent, The Washington Post, Le Monde, Al Sharq Al Awsat, TV 5 and many, many more. I also received an enormous amount of support from people all over the world. A few days later, the story took an incredible turn when the museum issued a public statement announcing that they decided to cancel the prize and side with the artist instead of their corporate sponsor. I really appreciated that move. It was a fine little victory for artistic freedom, I think.

For more information on this project and other project, please check my website: www.larissasansour.com

You also ventured into short movies. How did you feel when ‘A Space Exodus’ was nominated in the Best Short category at the Dubai International Film Festival? A Space Exodus was originally conceived as an art video geared towards art galleries and museums. I was very happy to be nominated in the best short category at the Dubai International Film Festival and cross over to film audiences as well. It was a great experience.

What are some of the other awards and achievements you have to your name? I have received many grants for developing my work throughout the years. Most recently, the scandalous 90 www.citypageskuwait.com

nomination for the Lacoste Elysée Prize 2011.

How was the feeling when you heard the news of your nomination for the Lacoste Elysée Prize 2011 I am currently working on a demanding project entitled Nation Estate which includes a sci-fi short film and a photographic series. Since the project involves a lot of computer generated work, it has a high production value, the same goes for the photographic series. I was hoping that the Elysée Prize could help me realize the project in case I won it, but instead the story unfolded differently and I was shocked to hear that my nomination got revoked.

Now, to talk about the recent shocking news at The Musee de l’Elysee? What hap-

What are some of the projects that you are currently working on? I just completed Trespass the Salt, a 3-channel video with Lebanese artist Youmna Chlala. It looks like an old-fashioned alarm clock, and yes, it has those two bell shaped things on top, but they don’t ring. They are two 360 degree omni-directional tweeters, and there is also a front-facing speaker for some “multi-directional rich sound”.

This is capable of prolonging the life of blades in your kitchen by removing the barest minimum of metal so that it can achieve a fine edge. Other sharpeners are said to be different as they erode knives with aggressive grinding, but the interlocking ceramic wheels of this model will gently file a blade’s edge, ensuring it is preserved for additional years of use. This model is also a time saver, where it boasts of a single slot to make sure that both sides are sharpened simultaneously.

This 12lb contraption is capable of letting you replicate all the different actions performed by boxers on speed bags, right in the comfort of your own home. You can mimic a speedball routine (use your imagination here) by performing a hand-bike-like circular motion, as you go ahead to spin it via its rotating grips. You can also opt to walk, march or perform mobile lunges while circulating The Burn Machine, regardless of height or angle to make sure those calories are burnt away

January Book Releases Wondering what new book releases will be hot in the new year? This January 2012 book release calendar features some of the new books receiving the biggest buzz.

Lunatics

The Fault in Our Stars

The Operators

Dave Barry and Alan Zweibel, both well known humorists, join forces to help us start 2012 with some comic relief. Lunatics is the story of two men whose paths cross and through a series of escalating events end up running for their lives. (I know it sounds serious, but remember the authors, and consider that one of the people pursuing them is dressed like Chuck E. Cheese).

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green is about a teenage girl with terminal cancer whose expectations for her life and death are challenged when a handsome guy joins the cancer support group and their lives connect.

The Operators is a controversial look at the war in Afghanistan by the journalist who wrote the 2010 Rolling Stone article about the war that ultimately led to the firing of General Stanley McChrystal. Shortly after that article was published, Little, Brown signed on Hastings to write a book, reportedly giving him a six figure advance. Then in June 2011, Little, Brown dropped the book, siting "editorial differences." The book was picked up by the Penguin Group, and is sure to spark a debate.

A Grown Up Kind of Pretty is about three generations of women in Mississippi. Ginny gave birth to Liza when she was 15 and Liza had Mosey when she is 15. Mosey is now 15, and the women are worried about an unplanned pregnancy, but unfortunately the family curse hits in worse ways than that. This is a Southern page turner.

What girl doesn't want to be surrounded by gorgeous jocks day in and day out? Jordan Woods isn't just surrounded by hot guys, though - she leads them as the captain and quarterback on her high school football team. They all see her as one of the guys, and that's just fine.

The Flight of Gemma Hardy is a retelling of Jane Eyre in the 1960s. The Flight of Gemma Hardy is set in Scotland, and the protagonist, Gemma, is from Iceland. Early reviews have been favorable

Automobili Lamborghini is expanding the most successful model line ever built under the sign of the bull with a very special car – the new Gallardo LP 550-2 Spyder combines the open spyder body style with purist rear Wheel Drive. This version brings together that stunning level of open-air driving fun that can come only from a super sports car with a folding roof and an unbelievably agile and spontaneous handling. “With the Gallardo LP 550-2 Spyder, we are expanding the Lamborghini lineup with a purist model that adds yet another dimension of driving fun. This will appeal in particular to a very special group of customers that enjoy a spirited driving style and also like to experience the sheer pleasure of open-air driving,” says Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini. “This special model with rear-wheel drive is a logical expansion of our lineup of spyder models with all-wheel drive.”

GALLARDO

LP550-2 S P Y D E R 104 www.citypageskuwait.com

The most important technical characteristics of the Lamborghini LP 550-2 Spyder are already recognizable from the model designation – LP stands for Longitudinale/Posteriore, for the mid-engine built longitudinally in front of the rear axle. 550 refers to the power output in hp, and the 2 stands for the drive to the rear wheels. At Lamborghini, the word spyder means the ultimate synthesis of a fascinating, powerfully expressive super sports car design, the ultimate open-air thrill and sheer pleasure for all the senses. The Lamborghini Gallardo LP 550-2 Spyder with rear-wheel drive is the perfect fit for the kind of sports car driver that enjoys a particularly hands-on and spirited style of driving. The setup is laid out to ensure that the rear end remains reliable and stable at all times, while the front axle steers with the highest level of precision and limits movement to an absolute minimum.

105 January 2012

The heart of the Gallardo – the 5.2-liter ten-cylinder – was also retuned and its characteristics optimized for rear-wheel drive, delivering that perfect and breathtaking synthesis of high-revving pleasure, pulling power, exuberant temperament and powerful melody in all keys. In the LP 550-2 Spyder, the compact and lightweight power unit delivers 405 kW (550 hp). Thanks to systematic Lamborghini lightweight design and an extremely low dry weight of just 1,520 kilograms, phenomenal performance is guaranteed – the LP 550-2 catapults itself from zero to 100 km/h in just 4,2 seconds. And its top speed of 319km/h guarantees it a place among the ultimate super sports cars. The soft-top of the Gallardo Spyder is designed for unlimited top-speed enjoyment both open and closed.

106 www.citypageskuwait.com

With the Gallardo LP 550-2 Spyder, Lamborghini is expanding its most successful model line of all time (to-date a total of nearly 11.800 have been built in Sant’Agata Bolognese) with a stunning variant that continues the successful individualization of its lineup. This includes the LP 560-4 Spyder, as well as the ultra-high-performance Gallardo LP 570-4 Spyder Performante, which boasts an even further weight reduction through carbon-fiber lightweight engineering. The latest version among the coupe variants is the Gallardo LP 570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale – the road-going version of the race car featured in the world’s fastest single-brand racing series. •

Ahmed Al-Mudhaf 108 www.citypageskuwait.com

Promoting the Adrenalin Rush It is a favorite sport for young Kuwaitis to race their expensive cars on the road to mimic formula 1 racers. Ahmed Al Mudhaf strongly condemns this kind of racing. In his opinion why risk your life when you can have a more exciting experience playing it safe. Instead he suggests all who love to race their sports cars to sign up for the GulfRun. He has been responsible for the headlined event held at the Bahrain International Circuit for seven years and it has been a fun ride not only for the creators and sponsors, but mostly the drivers and visitors who get the adrenalin rush. A racing enthusiast himself, Ahmed started the GulfRun to provide a safe environment for racers to enjoy. Now that word has spread, many racers are jumping at the chance to try the Bahrain circuit for track, drifting and drag racing. The lucky racers also love the creator’s idea that their sleek vehicles be showcased at the 360° mall. Ahmed Al Mudhaf and his team work hard every year to make the event a success, Citypages sat down with him to discover more about the event. Can you tell us what is Gulf Run? GulfRun started seven years ago. The idea behind it was a group of 8 close friends who wanted to rent out the Bahrain F1 Circuit so that we can enjoy our cars on it. After coming back from that event we saw a lot of demand from other friends and friends of friends to participate in it and so we did it again the following year and it became bigger. After that the whole public wanted to be part of this event, either to watch it or participate in it, so we decided to go public and make it an annual event. The idea was to get more people and cars to involve in it. The numbers grew from 8 cars to 15 in the second year and then to 30 and after that 40. This year we have capped it to 55 drivers.

Who’s brain child was Gulf Run? As I mentioned it was started by 3 friends. Myself, Khalid Al-Furaih and two years later we added the third partner – Marzouk Al Ghanim. And the three of us are doing this together. Basically, each one of us has certain skills that make all this work.

What was the main idea? The main idea of GulfRun was to drive and enjoy our sports cars in a safe environment instead of driving it on the streets. A lot of people in Kuwait have sports cars and enjoy driving their sports cars. The idea was that instead of driving in an unsafe place and driving fast on the streets and being hazardous to other

people, we wanted them to drive their cars in a safe environment where there are safety marshals, ambulances, and a lot of room for errors. If anything goes wrong, there is plenty of help available. The idea is to educate people on safe driving and enjoy driving the sports cars they have.

Who handles all the work? Our company mainly handles all the work but however we hire and seek the help of other companies for specific tasks such as ProVision helps us organize our events at 360 Degrees Malls.

What is GulfRun Today? Now it is an annual event that takes place every year during the end of January. For two days we rent the F1 circuit and we do multiple events for these drivers. Events range from drag racing to F1 circuit , autocross, drifting circuits, and a small technical circuit. The reason we have capped it at 55 drivers is for safety reasons. We want these drivers to enjoy themselves on the track and be safe. We think that the number over 55 will be a bit unsafe. This year it is in its seventh year.

I heard that you recently had another event in Kuwait? We do have a lot of demand from more people to try and get in since we have capped the number to 55 and that is why we have started doing other events to

109 January 2012

Can you give us some more details about the Annual Gulf Run event? Basically the Annual GulfRun happens in January. On the first day, we book a car wash and take all the cars for a proper carwash. We then put the stickers of our sponsors on the cars. And then on the next day, we rent the 360Degree Mall, where we close the parking and display these gorgeous cars inside and outside the mall. It looks like a carnival and the idea is for the public to enjoy and look at these amazing looking sports cars. The total value of the cars is over 2 Million Kuwaiti Dinars. Now from the last 3 years on the third day we have a charity raffle where we raise funds for charity. Last year we bought 2 A TVs and we sold tickets for a charity raffle and we raised 13,500KD for Hayat Cancer Foundation and we raffled off the 2 A TVs to someone who bought the This year we will be doing the same but this year we will be donating the Vespa Scooters. We did that two years ago and we will do that again this year and the funds will go to the Hayat Cancer Foundation. We try to sell the tickets prior to the event so that we can collect for funds.

What other events do you participate in? give more people a chance and let them enjoy.

Tell us about the Go Carting Race? We just recently had the 26 hour Go Karting Race. This was one of our newest events. This was done at the Mishref International Fair Grounds. We rented the parking lot and built a track in three days with approximately 4000 tires. We brought a professional team from London who provided us with the Karts and the lap timing system and the proper marshalling and a team of proper mechanics for the Karts itself. We wanted to make sure that we have all the proper systems, safety and maintenance facility available on the event. We were the first people in the GCC to do a 26 hour race. This was of course doing by a team and not one driver. The teams consisted of a minimum of 4 drivers and a maximum of 12. We limit the drivers but leave it entirely on them to form a strategy to win the race. The main purpose again was to educate drivers and at the same time to have something really nice to do in Kuwait.

110 www.citypageskuwait.com

There is an annual carnival at the GUST University and we have participated in it this year. It encourages the students in colleges to start their businesses. We have booked a booth in this carnival to encourage people to start their business and to spread the message of safety and safe driving on the streets and also to teach them to drive in a safe environment.

What is your favorite sports car? Any fast car that is street illegal is my favorite. My favorite is Westfield or a Radical. These are real sports cars and are not street legal.

What kind of sports cars do people bring there? People bring all kinds of cars such as Porsches, Ferraris, Hondas, Mitsubishis and all sorts of sports cars. For us a Mitsubishi is as powerful as a Ferrari in the right circumstances.

Who do the racers race against? We do not make them race amongst each others. We make them race against the time. Although the cars are out in the circuit at the same time but each car has a transpond-

er. So when you leave the track, you can watch on the screen what lap time you did. So, you will be racing your time and knowing what your competitor’s time is.

What kind of safety briefings do you provide to the racers? In terms of safety wise, we have a lots of briefings both before and after the event. In fact we have wrist bands put on the participants to ensure that everyone has been briefed. We are very detailed and cautious in terms of regulating the GulfRun event. We try to make it as safe as possible.

Tell us about your education? I graduated from the university of South Florida in

Marketing and International Business.

What are your hobbies besides racing? All kinds of water sports. I like weight board and surfing.

Who are the sponsors of the GulfRun 7? We are very thankful to our sponsors and without their help we cannot make GulfRun possible. I would like to thank each one of them for their help and support. Our sponsors are: Title Sponsor - Wataniya Telecom, Platinum Sponsors - Fastelco, CCC, and Jashanmal, Gold Sponsors - Al Sawan Travels, Credit One, Sliderstation.

What is your message for our readers and people of Kuwait?

My message is try and keep it on the track. It is not worth it to race on streets. It is very dangerous. The problem is that if you might injure other people. It is a shame that we have lots of accidents specially by the young people who are speeding. You may not worry about yourself but you must worry about other people on the road who have their families who can get affected. I recommend that everyone should do it on the track and after doing it on the track you will realize how silly it was to do it on the road. 111 January 2012

TURBINE “PLAYING WITH FIRE”

Perrelet has taken to playing the game of exploring the many possibilities afforded by its famous double rotor watches, in their Turbine version.orches wend their way through the darkness. The precious stage-setting is created by golden ingots drawn on the lower dial, with a solid gold ring placed in the center of the stylized upper turbine. The gilding on the numerals, hour-markers and hands reflects the same shimmering glow, creating an extremely chic and rosy tone that makes a beautiful contrast with the dominant black background. A mere breath is enough to spark the fire. As soon as the 12-blade wheel begins turning, the sky literally lights up in flaming glory. Depending on the speed of rotation, the gold shines and sparkles between the blades to the point of merging the various golden accents to produce a multitude of luminous bouquets.

Christmas is the time of the year where families gather from different parts of the world to celebrate by exchanging gifts and enjoying a festive dinner. However, Safir Hotel & Residences’ family thought of something special this year. They planned an internal festivity to exchange gifts with one another. Employees got the chance to experience the festive interaction by exchanging gifts anonymously to each other by simply drawing names from the ‘Secret Santa’ box. On Monday, December 19th 2011, all employees participated and got the chance to choose a gift selected by Safir Hotel & Residences to distribute to their colleagues. Everyone was having a good time in writing something suspicious on the card to sneaking in to the office, trying to place the gift on the desk without the person’s knowledge. On Tuesday, December 20th 2011, employees finally confronted their Secret Santa to reveal their identity. This kind of activity created a friendly environment between the staff and it soon became the most enjoyable event of the year!

you're ready to take care of business. Emotionally, you're sufficiently detached to be able to handle your work, and yet friendly and sociable. Home and family demand your undivided attention around the Full Moon on the 9th. The 12-14th are exceptionally strong days for business and personal magnetism. From the 23rd forward, your social life tends to take precedence, and you may need to reassess some of your recent

Travel, if it can be managed, would be especially rewarding now, dear Taurus, as your hunger for adventure is strong. Nevertheless, emotionally, you're much more settled than you were in December. You begin 2012 with lucky Jupiter in your sign, and while you're no stranger to this energy that began last June, its forward motion this month can bring a stronger, more confident manner. Hiccups in a romantic relationship, with children, or with creative projects might be experienced in the last week of the month. It's time to do some backtracking and reassessment of how to better approach these matters.
