FROM THE EDITOR Dear Readers, As I was working on this issue of CityPages, I had one question constantly evolving in my mind that how come women who run to the doctor when their child so much as sniffles put off taking care of their own health? So have you had a check? Are you up-to-date with the age appropriate health checks? Are YOU a priority in your life? This October, in conjunction to Breast Cancer Awareness month, we at CityPages point out the complete details about Breast Cancer on pages 50-51 and is a must-read for every woman in particular. Lined in as well are interesting interviews; one with an aspiring musician from Austria with a love for mixing different genres of music to produce something astonishingly amazing and another one with a life and business saving coach in Kuwait. Dalal Al-Janaie is a Licensed and certified Life/Business/ Executive coach helping individuals and organization become better and more productive. I am pleased to announce that Dalal will join our family of regular contributors and will dedicate some of her precious time to write for us on a monthly basis. Another interesting interview we have this month is with Mehdi the man behind the first 100% made in Africa brand of sneakers. Continue to leaf through and you will find useful reads; 7 signs that you should not ignore, back pains and more tucked in between. And because the quest to look for happiness has always been the rage, we have an interesting read on page 20. Some of us fight many people’s battles, and some just our own. Whatever your cause, believe in it, and persevere. And tomorrow, let the cause you pay attention to be your health. Be aware. Be safe and have an eventful October,

Your Editor,

A Logotype In Beirut Bridges The Gap Between East And West Foreign businesses in the Middle East could learn a lot from Mary Choueiter, who distorted both Latin and Arabic alphabets to create beautiful hybrid signage for a bilingual arts center in Lebanon.

If

you travel to countries where people speak multiple languages -- so, pretty much any nation that’s not the United States -- you’ll notice that signs often speak multiple languages, too. Helpful? Ideally. But not especially attractive. And sometimes, the signs are so busy, they can actually be hard to read. In Lebanon, where residents jaw in Arabic and French (and often English, too), a designer has found a way to visually marry Eastern and Western letter forms to produce bilingual signage that looks like it’s anything but. The signage, by Lebanese-born, Brooklyn-based Mary Choueiter, forms the visual identity of the Beirut Exhibition Center, a new contemporary art space

in Beirut. Choueiter was inspired by the center’s new building (by L.E.FT Architects), a low-slung box with a corrugated aluminum facade that artfully mirrors and warps the surroundings. As a riff, she distorted both Latin and Arabic alphabets, hardening the elegant cursive of the latter and softening the harsh blockiness of the former. The result: a single typographic aesthetic in which the Arabic and the Latin smoothly reflect one another. "My proposal was simple: to bring together the disparate visual forms of English and Arabic in a cohesive typographic approach," she says. "...I made the conscious decision of not compromising the letterforms of one language to meet the visual language of the other at the expense of the whole. I was rather altering both equally to reach a whole based on the sum of its parts and its own unique

visual language." Side by side on the building, they could practically pass for brothers. The best part is that they’re still plenty easy to read. You could even argue that they’re more legible because they don’t force your eye to wade through a jumble of wildly disparate characters to find what it’s looking for. Core77 named Choueiter’s design a runner-up in the 2011 Design Awards. “These elegant environmental graphics solve myriad problems,” juror Paula Scher says. “They combine Arabic and English in a beautiful way; they connect seamlessly with the architecture; they are realized in excellent materials appropriate to the building. The building and graphics are a landmark breakthrough in the region.” They also just go to show the value of good graphic design in branding, especially abroad. Foreign businesses are notorious for swooping into

the Middle East and slapping generic Arabic script onto their logo and calling it a day. (Do a Google image search for "Subway" and "Middle East" if you don’t believe me.) But imagine if they invested in typography that’s sensitive to the particulars of Arabic. It could go a long way toward clarifying and communicating the companies' brands. And who knows? Maybe it could even redound to the benefit of their bottom line.

Dangerous Restaurants in the World For enough money, unique restaurants around the world offer adventurous dining experiences for thrill-seekers. At these restaurants, you have to earn your food by overcoming your fear of heights or claustrophobia. You decide if these restaurants have taken their themes too far or are worthy entrepreneurial risks. These hot spots are not only the world's most dangerous restaurants but also some of the weirdest we've ever come across as well. These spots also prove that people are excited by some really bizarre things like the option to plunge to your death en route to a teahouse in China located on a steep mountain or the chance to dine in a creepy prison/hospital complete with severed limbs and handcuffs. Far from your average restaurant, these eateries attract some of the most brave and most daring diners around. Enjoy your meal. Ivana Wynn

The Huashan Teahouse in China

out toe holes for climbers. That'll keep your from falling off the mountain. If you've been lucky enough to make it this far, you'll have to climb the world's steepest staircase, protecting by a tiny fence. Finally, you've made it to the teahouse! It must be a damn good cup of tea. Now for the way down the mountain...

The average person enjoys tea and taking a hike but would you be daring enough to take a hike up Mt. Huashan in Huayin, China, for a cup of tea? The teahouse was originally a Taoist temple and completes the five mountain peaks in the area that form the image of a flower. The trip up the mountain is long and grueling, not to mention the possibility of falling off the side. First, a set of trams take visitors to the path. The scary part starts immediately. Unharnessed guests have to tiptoe their way across the mountain on tiny wooden planks that look hastily nailed together by holding on to chains... Oh, and whoever built this path to the teahouse decided to be so kind as to dig

Brussels-Based Dinner in the Sky

2.

Just imagine dining over a beautifully lit city like New York or Las Vegas at night, above a landmark like the Eiffel Tower in Paris or by the ocean at sunset from a seat that can rotate 180 feet. If you've got $11,000 lying around you can hire the suspended restaurant for eight hours. It's up to you how to divide the time you have - you can have one V.I.P party that seats 22 people or you can keep lower the restaurant every hour and rotate people. Although the set price doesn't include catering, you do get a photographer to document the entire experience without having to worry about losing your SLR. The apparatus, which was built in Belgium, is suspended 50 feet in the air from a 200 ton crane. The center can hold a waiter, a chef and an entertainer. The host can hire a second platform to exhibit something or bring a band or live show along. The first question that comes to mind is is it safe? The company works with trained staff, gives its guests a security briefing before the event, makes sure all diners are strapped into their seat before lift off and has a $10 million insurance policy in case anyone falls off their seat. Also, only certain kinds of cooking appliances are allowed on the platform to make it fire-proof. The company, which also does weddings and business meetings in the sky, is looking to expand to suspending diners over natural landscapes like The Grand Canyon or Niagara Falls.

Ithaa Undersea Restaurant in Maldives

to be passing by the restaurant and runs into it or an undersea battle between armies of fish is held in the area? Ok, although not likely, a tsunami does seem like a more plausible threat. The 175-ton restaurant was built in Singapore before being shipped over to Maldives. When it arrived at the islands, it was sunk with 85 tons of sand and secured into the sea floor with four steel piles and concrete. The restaurant is estimated to last 20 years before it has to be rebuilt. If you really can't bear to part with the sea after your $120 to $150 meal, the restaurant can be turned into a guest room for $11,710.

3.

The world's first underwater restaurant is located on the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island. Few places as unique as this have been built in the name of tourism. A quick geography lesson: Maldives is a cluster of islands located south of India and west of Sri Lanka. The restaurant is an acrylic tunnel with a 270-degree view of the sea that is accessed through a spiral staircase at the end of a jetty. There's nothing like eating seafood while watching it and being completely submerged below the ocean. While it does sound cool to have the entire ocean as your aquarium while eating dinner, there are several possible destructive scenarios that could put the diners' lives at risk. What if a heavy fish happened

4. Dining in the Dark at Unsicht-Bar in Germany Fine dining in the dark is a trend that was started in Zurich and has since spread all over Europe and the world. The idea is to give your eyes a break from staring at computer screens and rely on your other senses to enjoy food. This quirk has employed many blind and visually handicapped waiters around the world. After choosing your meal and beverage in a well-lit foyer at Unsicht-Bar in Berlin, Germany, your waiter takes you into the pitch black dining room. You would think waiters and guests would be running into each other and plates would be knocked over onto the floor but the waiters have had to rely entirely on senses other than sight and are able to navigate around the room without problems. Seriously, this is what they see: Prices of three or four course meals range from 38,50 Euro for a vegetarian meal to 55,50 for beef. Lamb, seafood and a surprise deal are also available. All of the food is pre-cut for you so the greatest damage can only be caused by a butter knife. The food on the plate is arranged like a clock so that guests know where each side is located. The restaurant does have limitations in that they can't serve foods like peas and spaghetti because it would be too difficult to pick up with a fork in the dark. No light of any kind is allowed in the dining room (no cellphones!) and if a guest needs to go to the bathroom, the waiter escorts them back into the lit rooms. Don't worry you won't have food all over your clothes when you finish the two hour experience - the food is served in a way that makes it easy to eat. Set within one of several ice hotels around the world, the Laino Snow Village Ice Restaurant will have you dreaming about saunas, hot tubs and 100-degree weather in no time. That's right, this restaurant is ice cold and kept that way at between 23 and 28 degrees Fahrenheit at all times. There is no set dress code, but trust us that arriving in anything less than a full snow suit is a mistake. The entire restaurant is made or snow or ice. The walls, the tables, even the chairs, all frozen. Because it would be impossible to keep any food warm, the restaurant serves cold meals. Just as the menu changes, the restaurant changes each year as well. That's because it's built from the ground up with snow and ice each winter, then melts into nothingness when weather warms up in Finland each spring.

5. NINJA New York Turning the TriBeCa region of New York City into ancient Japan, NINJA New York is perhaps one of the scariest themed restaurants you'll find. From the outside it appears as just another Japanese restaurant, but step inside and you are transported into a one-of-a-kind dining experience. If you're lucky enough to get a reservation to this hot spot, once you arrive, you and your guest or party is guided through a dark and smokey labyrinthine path to your table. Once you arrive at your table, don't be surprised if it is located within one of these cozy jail-cell-like rooms. Also, don't be afraid when an actual NINJA swoops in on your table. Wielding swords and in full ninja costume, these masked foes are your wait staff. Each of the menu items are cooked to order, often in front of each table. Arrive hungry as tasting menus, which can cost as much as $100 per guest, include enough food to feed a small army.

Yellow Treehouse Restaurant in New Zealand Though now closed, the Yellow Treehouse Restaurant in New Zealand was a dream destination to dine for treehouse lovers as just like advertised, this restaurant was suspended in a pod structure around a tree in the middle of a forest. The Redwoods treehouse opened in December 2008 and operated until February 2009. Despite winning awards for its design, the experiment ended after the land was transfered back to the original owner. What is so scary about a restaurant in a tree you may

ask? Well, let's start with the path to the dining area, which is suspended 10 meters up in the air. Second, the entire restaurant, which can hold about 20 people at any given time, hangs from a tree. See those rings around that giant tree? That is what holds the restaurant and diners between floating in the air and falling to the ground. Conclusion: The Yellow Treehouse Restaurant is a beautiful dining experience for anyone who enjoys the outdoors, but clearly not for those with any fear of heights. What do you get when you combine a restaurant, a hospital and a jail? Usually that would mean crappy food and cranky nurses but not in the case of Tokyo's Alcatraz ER. Things could go too far at Tokyo's prison and hospital themed combo restaurant, but they've found a nice balance between naughty and nice in this hot spot. Just like going to the hospital, to enter this restaurant you'll start by telling the nurses your blood type. Then things get a bit weird as that seemingly harmless nurse slaps handcuffs on you, gives you a (pretend) shot in the rear and guides you to your table, which by the way is also a jail cell. The weirdness does not stop there as a full menu of themed foods and drinks follows. That's right, if you've ever wanted to eat food shaped like a severed penis or try cocktails with false teeth in them, you are in luck. Oh, and just like every other hospital prison, they have karaoke too.

In the wake of Steve Jobs’ resignation, let's consider the greatest decision he ever made. It didn't happen in a garage in Cupertino, sweating with Steve Wozniak as they dreamed up a computer for the common man. Or in a conference room, as managers told him that no one would ever pay $500 for a portable music player. Or in another conference room, as new managers told him no one would ever pay $400 for a cell phone. Rather, it was in a dusty basement of the Apple campus.

Jobs had just recently come back to the company, after a 12-year layoff working for two of his own startups: NeXT, which made ultra-high-end computers, and Pixar. He was taking a tour of Apple, becoming reacquainted with what the company had become in the years since he'd left. It must have been a sobering, even ugly sight: Apple was dying at the hands of Microsoft, IBM, Dell, and a litany of competitors who were doing what Apple did, only cheaper, with faster processors. His tour finally brought him to the workbench of a designer ready to quit after just a year on the job, languishing amid a stack of prototypes. Among them was monolithic monitor with a teardrop swoop, which managed to integrate all of a computer's guts into a single package. In that basement Jobs saw what middle managers did not. He saw the future. And almost immediately he told the designer, Jonathan Ive, that from here on out they'd be working side-by-side on a new line.

fan--the first person to digest its possibilities. Of course, when Steve Jobs has fancied himself the chief creator, disastrous failures often ensued. His instincts were often wrong. For example, his much ballyhooed Apple Cube, which was in fact a successor to the NeXT cube he'd developed during his Apple hiatus, was an $1,800 dud. He was also openly disdainful of the Internet in the late 1990s. And before his hiatus from Apple, in 1985, his meddling and micro-management had gotten out of control. But the years away reportedly helped him begin ceding more responsibilities to others, and become less of a technology freak and more of a user-experience savant. A reporter who asked Jobs about the market research that went into the iPad was famously told, "None. It's not the consumers' job to know what they want." Which isn't to say that he doesn't think like a consumer--he just thinks like one standing in the near future,

Steve Jobs isn't an engineer or a designer. But he's one of the greatest users of technology of all time, and that made all the difference. Steve Jobs may not be the greatest technologist or engineer of his generation. But he is perhaps the greatest user of technology to ever live, and it was Apple's great fortune that he also happened to be the company's founder. Those computers that Ive and Jobs worked on became, of course, the iMac--a piece of hardware designed with an unprecedented user focus, all the way to the handle on top, which made it easy to pull out of the box. ("That's the great thing about handles," Ive told Fast Company in 1999. "You know what they're used for.") And while it seems condescending to say that Jobs's greatest moment was finding someone else who was great, it's not. That single moment in the basement with Ive tells you a great deal about what made Steve Jobs the most influential innovator of our time. It shows you the ability to see a company from the outside, rather than inside as a line manager. He didn't see the proto iMac as a liability or a boondoggle. He saw something that was simply better than what had preceded it, and he was willing to gamble based on that instinct. That required an ability to think first and foremost as someone who lives with technology rather than produces it. People often say that Jobs is, first and foremost, a great explainer of technology--a charismatic, plainspoken salesman who is able to bend those around him into a "reality distortion field." But charisma can be bent to all sorts of purposes. Those purposes may very well be asinine. So what gives his plain-speaking such force? He always talks about how wondrous it will be to use something, to actually live with it and hold it in your hands. If you listen to Steve Jobs's presentations over the years, he comes across not as the creator of a product so much as its very first

not in the recent past. He is a focus group of one, the ideal Apple customer, two years out. As he told Inc. magazine in 1989, "You can't just ask customers what they want and then try to give that to them. By the time you get it built, they'll want something new." People also often reduce Jobs's success to a ruthless perfectionism which sometimes led him to scrap a product simply because it didn't feel right, or because some minor feature like a power button or a home screen seemed buggy and unresolved. (Famously, he tore through three prototypes of the iPhone in 2007 before the last passed muster; he also berated Ive early over the details of the USB port in the first iMac.) But that doesn't get to it either. A myopic focus on details can readily destroy as much value as it creates: Just think about the number of times you've sat through a meeting with a boss who harped on details, killing a project before you ever had a chance to explain what it could be. It's almost certain that Jobs has killed far more great ideas than he ever let live-there are 313 patents under his name covering everything from packaging to user interfaces. But those that survived outweighed all the rest, simply because his focus was, continually, on what it would be like to come at some new product raw, with no coaching or presentation but simply as a dumb, weird new thing. Again, that's ability to see past internal debates, and to look at a potential product with the fresh eyes of a user rather than a creator. Perhaps the best example of this hides in plain sight, and is a fundamental part of every Apple product. All throughout the 1970s to the 1990s, if you ever opened up a new gadget the first thing you were ever faced with was figuring how the damn thing worked. To solve that, you'd have to wade through piles of instruction manuals written in an engineer's alien English. But a funny thing happened with the iMac: Every year after, Apple's instruction manuals grew thinner and thinner, until finally, today, there are none. The assumption is that you'll be able to tear open the box and immediately start playing with your new toy. Just watch a 3-year-old playing with an iPad. You're seeing a toddler intuit the workings of one of the most advanced pieces of engineering on the planet. At almost no time in history has that ever been possible. It certainly wasn't when the first home computers were introduced, or the first TV remotes, or the first radios. And it was something he

17

October - 2011

was driving for, his entire career. Again from 1989, Inc. asked him, "Do you sometimes marvel at the effect you've had on people's lives?" And Jobs said: "There are some moments. I was in an elementary school just this morning, and they still had a bunch of Apple IIs, and I was kind of looking over their shoulders. Then I get letters from people about the Mac, saying, 'I never thought I could use a computer before I tried this one.'" There is, however, one decisive factor that Steve Jobs couldn't control: Timing. Yet it was perfect for him. He was born just in time to become a founding father of the personal computer movement. But he was also still young enough that in 1997, he could lead while his own sense of a computer's potential could finally bear fruit. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, computers were being sold on their speed and features. This was the birthing period for computers, when their capabilities were just being limned. But by 2000, all of these had largely become commoditized--it no longer mattered how fast a computer was, when basic issues of usability and integration became so pressing. Just think back to

What Makes Steve Jobs So Great? decade. But it's not totally clear that anyone else can equal his talent for being able to look at Apple's product's from the outside view of a user. Tim Cook, his anointed successor, proved his worth by totally revamping Apple's production processes and supply chain. That talent is vital to running the business, and has increased Apple's profits by untold billions. But being able to break apart the nuances of sourcing is the precise opposite of being a usability genius: Cook's career has largely been spent focusing on precisely those things the consumer never sees.

your Windows machine of the time: What did speed matter if you didn't even know what all the menus meant, or if you were hit with some weird bug that flashed popups at you every time you clicked your mouse? Before 1997, Jobs was ahead of his time. The computers he made were overpriced for the market, because he thought that usability was more important than capability. But as computers reached maturity and became a feature in every home, his obsessions became more relevant to the market. And in fact, many of Apple's recent signature products, such as the iPad or the iPhone, were based on products first conceived of in the 1990s or even the 1980s--they had to bide their time. All of this isn't to say that Steve Jobs has been Apple's sole arbiter of success: He purportedly has a great eye for talent. Moreover, he has taught his entire organization to play in the span of product generations rather than just product introductions: Apple designers say that now, each design they create has to be presented alongside a mock-up of how that design might evolve in the second or third generation. That should ensure Apple's continued success for as long as a

Does Cook have an in-house product critic, who could stand in Jobs’ place? Will Cook have as close a working relationship with Ive as Jobs did? Will Ive even stay? And did Steve Jobs create an entire organization that shared his balance of concerns--for the back-end yes, but for usability first and foremost? The biggest risk is that Apple has taken for granted that its superior design should demand a price premium. That might lull them into thinking that Apple is great, rather than its products. Anger Management Controlling anger

Anger is a mental state of mind. It is the great fire in the human mind. It may take the shape of yelling shouting and verbal abuse. Anger triggers an increase in heart rate, blood pressure and levels of adrenaline and noradrenalin. When we expect a certain type of behaviour from someone and if the behaviour is not up to our expectations we become angry and violent, convincing our self that others need to be punished. The result is an unresolved conflict which emerges according to time and circumstances.

Deepti Bindra Angry people are too attached to the fact that they are right and others are wrong. They feel too justified to think of forgiveness in order to make the situation peaceful. In order to control anger we have to change the following wrong believes:

1. The actions of others make me angry. In the same situation two different people react differently. In is also true in case of anger. This means that our thought and not the situation is responsible for the anger. If we change our thought pattern we can completely control the anger.

2. Anger is used to motivate others. The base of every relationship is trust and respect. It may be at home and office as well. Anger never makes a relationship. It influences the motivation negatively. The capacity of the person at work decreases when we get angry with anyone and result is lesser output. In addition to changing the above wrong believes following actions must be taken for anger management. 1. Change your perception: Two different people behaves(level of anger) differently for the same situation. This means our perception to the situation governs our behaviour and not the situation itself. Changing our perception towards the situation is the first step in anger management. 2. Accept what you can’t change: never try to control the behaviour of other people. As they are not in your control. Just accept the things and focus on the things you can control i.e. your reaction to others behaviour. 3. Live in present: Don’t keep any unhealthy emotions for a particular person or situation. Live in present and try to wash out the

memories of earlier behaviours or conflict while reacting to the present situation 4. Learn to forgive: Accept the fact that nobody is perfect in this world and everyone makes mistake. Just forgive and move on. 5. Start observing your thoughts: Whenever you feel angry start observing your thoughts, Detach yourself from the situation and think if the anger is necessary. 6. Increase your inner strength: To follow all the above steps to control anger you need to increase your internal power. This can only done by meditation.

Meditation Technique 1. Find a quiet place and sit comfortably. 2. Start observing your thoughts. 3. Think yourself as a tiny star situated between the centre of the eyes in the forehead. 4. Now feel as if you are in front of God (a tiny star

like you having unlimited power). 5. Rays of peace is coming from God towards you. 6. You are absorbing the rays of peace from God. 7. Stay with this thought as long as you can. 8. Now feel if rays of power and wisdom is coming from God to you. 9. Your self control is increasing. 10. Now feel if you are radiating the rays of peace and power in your surroundings. Practicing the meditation daily will yield result and you will feel more at peace. For anger management awareness is the first step. Next is observation. After that increasing your self control through meditation. And the last is correction. All these steps will help in controlling anger and results are seen within a month or two.

Happiness

We try and convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, have a baby, then another. Then we are frustrated that the kids aren’t old enough and we’ll be more content when they are. After that we’re frustrated that we have teenagers to deal with. We will certainly be happy when they are out of that stage. We convince ourselves that our life will be complete when our spouse gets his or her act together, when we get a nicer car, are able to go on a nice holiday, or when we retire. The truth is, there’s no better time to be happy than right now. If not now, when? Your life will always be filled with challenges. It’s best to admit this to yourself and decide to be happy regardless. A great quote by Alfred D Souza states, “For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin – real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life.”

Angus Finlayson In Search of Happiness, Happiness is the Way

Empowering Questions

Looking at life from this perspective shows us that there is no way to happiness.Happiness is the way. So, treasure every moment that you have. And treasure it more because you shared it with someone special, special enough to spend your time…and remember that time waits for no one. So stop waiting until you finish school, until you go back to school, until you lose ten pounds, until you gain ten pounds, until you have kids, until your kids leave the house, until you start work, until you retire, until you get married, until you get divorced, until Friday night, until Sunday morning Stop waiting until you get a new car or home, until your car or home is paid off, until spring, until summer, until fall, until winter, until you are off welfare, until the first or fifteenth, until your song comes on, until you’ve had a drink, until you’ve sobered up, until you die, until you are born again to decide that there is no better time than right now to be happy.

1. How can I take immediate Control of my Life? 2. How can I change my current personal & professional situation & position to better? 3. What can I do today to change my future? 4. “shoulds,” past experiences, family edicts and endlessly disempowering messages. So the first step in claiming a complete life is to embrace the distinction that Oprah makes quite concisely, “Don’t worry about living THE best life, just live YOUR best life.” Suggestions Here are some suggestions to begin the journey towards living YOUR best life.

1. Start a journal One of the best ways to quiet the mind and access your deeper thoughts is to write. Let yourself write in an uncensored way. Let your thoughts flow without concern for grammar or impressing a reader. Be curious about what your inner self wants to tell you. Here’s a series of provocative questions to help start the journey: What will my life feel/be like when I’m living fully and in balance? Here’s where you imagine in detail the life you want. Let yourself dream about how you’ll feel. Will you feel peaceful? Energized? Both? Will you be fulfilling a dream or simply living fully in each moment? Paint a picture for yourself. What’s most important to me? Begin to make a list of your values. Your values are your personal inventory of what you consider most important. We all have values,

but unless you take the time to clarify them for yourself, you can inadvertently be living someone else’s values. Your values inform the choices you make.

2. Get to know yourself Walk, meditate, exercise, or take yourself on a date. Getting to know yourself and what you like is an important piece of the puzzle. What movie would YOU chose? Is nature most enlivening or would you prefer a cultural romp in the city? Do something you’ve always wanted to try. Take a risk. To live a complete life you have to be in touch with what makes you happy.

3. Find support It can be difficult to explore or make life changes without the benefit of a support system. Often, when people start to grow, others around them – friends and relatives – may feel threatened. They may not want you to “rock the boat.” Seek out at least one person you feel safe sharing your desires with. This will help you to stay motivated and provide some accountability.

4. Take action Inspiration without action is like being dressed up and having nowhere to go. Take some baby steps. Ask yourself: “what’s one thing I can do this week to feel great about my life?” Then do it. What does a complete and balanced life mean to you? What will you discover? It’s truly possible. You can love your life and watch the seeds turn to blossoms and the blossoms turn to fruit.

Facts About Sharks

w A shark does not have any bone in its body. Its skeleton is made up of cartilage. Cartilage is a tough material, like the material that shapes your ear. w

w Most sharks give birth to their babies. Only a few sharks lay eggs. Most sharks have six to twelve babies at a time, but the Hammerhead and Tiger Shark can have as many as 40 babies at a time.

The Swell Shark, found in New Zealand, barks like a dog.

w Weird things have been found inside a shark, such as a nail, a bottle of wine, a treasure chest, coats, a suit of armor, a drum and a torpedo. w A shark’s skin is covered with denticles, which are small, razorsharp teeth. Denticles can be removed from a shark’s body. After the small teeth are removed, the remaining skin can be made into very strong leather. A pair of shoes made from shark leather can last up to

w Most species of sharks can swim up to 20-40 miles per hour. A Mako Shark has been recorded at more than 60 miles per hour. w A shark has three types of fins. They have two dorsal fins on their back, one fin beneath their body, called the pectoral fin (not all species have it), and the caudal fin is the tail.

w four times longer than shoes made with cow hide. w Sharks have very good senses. Sometimes a shark is called “a swimming nose”, for its great sense of smell. Sharks can easily detect prey that is in the sand, as well as at night. A shark also has a remarkable sensitivity to vibrations in the water. It can feel the movements made by other animals that are hundreds of feet away. They can hear sounds from thousands of feet away. Sharks can tell the direction from where the sound is coming from, too. w Sharks cannot eat Puffer Fish, because the Puffer Fish inflates like a balloon and pokes the shark’s mouth with its sharp needles.

The Whale Shark is the biggest fish in the world.

w A Whale Shark has more than 4,000 teeth, but each is less than 1/8 inch long. A shark may go through 1,000 sets of teeth during its lifetime. When a shark loses a tooth, one replaces it. w A Whale Shark weighs about 90,000 pounds. The second largest shark is the Basking Shark. It can be as much as 40 feet long. Question: What is more dangerous to people - a shark or a wasp/bee?

Answer: wasp/bee Every year, 100 people die from wasp or bee stings, yet hundreds of millions of people go swimming, and sharks kill only about six people. Only about 25 sharks have been known to actually attack people. Every year, people kill thousands of sharks. They are killed for food, oil, skins and sport.

Our Relationship Status Online

How Social Media is Changing Our Relationships Status ...?

We all agree that Social Media is changing the way we relate and co relate, we simply because its built on relations and connections as the network started back in 2004 :) One main facet of social media is its emphasis on creating and maintaining relationships.

All the content you create, all the following you build, each of these is designed to create and foster more intimate relationships with people, in some cases, people you might not have met any other way. What’s interesting is social media is changing the foundation of the ways we relate. This article will examine how social media is changing our interpersonal psychology and what you can do about it.

We should really pay attention ...because... This has important implications for business because business, after all, is comprised of interpersonal relationships. If you’re connecting with your clients and customers through social media, you want to be aware of how various changes in the interpersonal psychology might directly impact the client relationships. On another level, it’s important to be aware of how your social media participation may be impacting you, as this will have implications for the decisions you make and the choices you adopt for your business. Social media is changing our relationship styles in several important ways.First, it’s allowing us to connect with more people more rapidly. Second, it’s easy to overestimate the level of intimacy of our online relationships. Third, it makes us more susceptible to a sort of social media contagion effect, which means you may possibly start adopting behaviors, attitudes, and beliefs from those within our social network. Fourth, social media facilitates comparing ourselves with others, which may have positive or negative effects. Let’s dig a bit deeper into each of these…

Connecting with More .......People means? As we look at the first trend, we note that social media enables us to connect with many more people, from all walks of life, than we might normally meet in a normal work-week.

We can connect with the CEO of a Fortune 500 company on LinkedIn. We can meet others who enjoy our love of punk music or we can share recipes for Thursday night’s dinner with people we’ve never met before. The business case for developing such a broad social network is found in the work of Pierre Bourdieu, a French sociologist, who studied how people have historically gained social currency (he called it Social Capital) One way they did this was by having large networks that were loosely organized and not particularly intimate. This finding has been supported in many industries, which demonstrates that those who attain top leadership positions tend to have broad social networks. With this increase in number of connections and frequency of contact, you’ll also see that you have access to many more ideas and resources than ever before. You can crowd source the best information to solve our particular business issues. Research shows that, generally speaking, more opinions create a better result. Given the informal nature of social media, it’s easy to approach someone you’d like to meet, and this can be done more easily and fluidly. It’s easier to extend your sphere of influence and enlarge it to include people you’d like to meet, or would like to know better. This means that influence will beget more influence.

Can you help not to compare yourself with Others? Another downside of our social media relationships can be that our successes feel diminished and our failures amplified. With the inrush of so much information about how other people are living their lives, or conducting their businesses, it’s easy to feel that we can’t compete. We might also feel some pressure to demonstrate a certain persona, as we know that people are always watching us. It can feel like we’ve traded a real-life rat race for an online one.

8 Keys to a Strong Marketing Strategy

The Building Blocks to Successful Marketing Whether you have a big company or just starting a new small business, to be successful, you must have a marketing strategy and you must implement it consistently. However, it doesn’t have to be a very costly one and you don’t have to be a creative genius to develop one. The key is developing a marketing strategy that becomes a good and strong basis for your promotional efforts. Implementing promotional activities such as advertising, direct mail or even networking and one-toone sales efforts without a marketing strategy is like buying carpet for a house you are building before you have an architectural plan. How would you even know how much to buy or what color it needs to be? This month, I will share with you some important keys that can help you develop a strong marketing foundation:

1. Defining your product or service: How

is your product or service packaged? What is it that your customers are really buying? If you are offering several products or services which ones are the most viable to promote?

2. Identifying your target market: Eve-

ryone or anybody might be potential clients for your product. However, you probably don’t have the time or money to market to Everyone or Anybody. Who is your ideal customer? Who does it make sense for you to spend your time and money promoting your service to? You might define your ideal customer in terms of income, age, geographic area, number of employees, revenues, industry, etc.

3. Knowing your competition: Even if there are no direct competitors for your service, there is always competition of some kind. Something besides your product is competing for the potential client’s money. What is it and why should the potential customer spend his or her money with you? What is your competitive advantage or unique selling proposition? 4. Finding a niche: Is there a market segment that is not currently being served or is not being served well? A niche strategy allows you to focus your marketing efforts and dominate your market, even if you are a small business owner. 5. Developing awareness: It is difficult for a potential client to buy your product or service if they don’t even know or remember it exists. Generally a potential customer will have to be exposed to your product 5 to 15 times before they

are likely to think of your product when the need arises. Needs often arise unexpectedly.

6. Building credibility: Not only must clients be aware of your product or service, they also must have a positive opinion toward it. Potential customers must trust that you will deliver what you say you will. Often, especially with large or risky purchases, you need to give them the opportunity to “sample”, “touch”, or “taste” the product in some way. 7. Being Consistent: Be consistent in every way and in everything you do. This includes the look of your marketing materials, the message you deliver, the level of customer service, and the quality of the product. Being consistent is more important than having the “best” product. 8. Maintaining Focus: Focus allows for more effective utilization of the scarce resources of time and money. Your promotional budget will bring you greater return if you use it to promote a single product to a narrowly defined target market and if you promote that same product to that same target market over a continuous period of time. So, before you ever consider developing a brochure, running an advertisement, implementing a direct mail campaign, joining an organization for networking or even conducting a sales call, begin by mapping a path to success through the development of a consistent, focused marketing strategy. I hope you enjoyed these simple keys that I have explained and will make use of them. Till next month……Happy marketing!!

She is currently working on her own music productions, with various music producers, DJs and music labels around the globe. Here is what we discussed during an exclusive interview with her for CityPages: Jameel Arif

good or really down……Writing Lyrics has always been the best method to express my feelings.

How you got the idea of mixing different genres of music? Who was your motivation? I always used to watch music videos on MTV and tried to copy the dancing moves in front of the mirror …My parents caught me a couple of times dancing in front of the mirror all dressed up and singing into my hairbrush :)

Tell us about your family? My parents are both medical doctors ,that's why It was very difficult to convince them in what I do … but after a couple of years, they understood how passionate I am about music and singing. Today , they are very supportive and proud of me.

What is your education? I am starting my course in Music and Media Management in Hamburg /Germany this week . I am really looking forward to it, because combining music and management is the perfect thing for me to do.

SAWA SHOES: The 100% African Sneakers

35

October - 2011

How and when did the idea of creating a shoe brand originate? Sawa started in 2009. We wanted our project to highlight a strong story, not something far fetched or artificial. We wanted to offer an authentic and unexpected story, something which will trigger curiosity and affection. We define our brand as an activist fashion brand. We do not do charity in Africa.I mean we have normal business relationships with all our suppliers. Producing our shoes in Africa with African materials enables to create added value which 100% benefits to the black continent? What does SAWA mean? And why did you choose this name? Our project started in Cameroon. Sawa is the name of the native tribe of the city of Douala (Cameroon). Then, we learn afterward that “SAWA” means “together” in arab, which was a lucky coincidence. Who started the brand? I started the brand with my best friend, Frederic Barthelemy, then later in 2011, another friend, Marc Henri Beausire, joined us via his private equity company. What experience did the partners have? Marc Henri is already involved in the shoe business since he is the owner of the French brand Le Coq Sportif. Frederic has a banking experience and I have a financial background and had the opportunity to work in marketing in shoe industry too. Where and when did you open your first store? The first shop which decided to propose our product is the famous english shop Dover Street Market in England ( Comme des Garçon Group). Our shoes are now sold in Tokyo, New York, Paris, Singapore, etc. In the Middle East, you can find our shoes in the concept store Ginette in Lebanon (Beirouth). What problems did you face in starting your production?

When we used to produce in Cameroon, problems were our daily lot…most of the problems did not come from the factory but from people who had no direct interests to make things happen (if you know what I mean). Then we took the wise decision to move to Ethiopia where we can take advantage of the best conditions: very good know how, beautiful energy from people, efficient industrial policy from the Ethiopian government, etc. What kind of equipment is available and from where did you acquire it? We are not the owner of the equipment. We work hand in hand with our Ethiopian supplier. The factory offers the best equipments in terms of stitching, assembling, etc. Equipment come from Germany and Italy. Can you briefly describe the sources for the material and what type of material do you use? When we used to produce in Cameroon, we bought materials from a lot of African countries (Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Nigeria, etc.).Today, Ethiopia can provide us with local material, so we buy most of our materials from Ethiopian suppliers which makes everything easier. We are very demanding as far as quality is concerned. We pay attention to use the best quality in the market. Who would you like to wear SAWA shoes? Our shoes seduce very demanding people as far as fashion is concerned. I think that our customers like the style of our shoes first and they just fall in love with our shoe when they realize that the shoes are made in Africa…they have the feeling to own something nice, elegant and…unique! What are the features that distinguish SAWA from other sneaker brands? The “Made in Africa” label for sure! How are SAWA shoes priced? Low cut shoe is sold in retail at 75 euros , mid cut shoe is sold in retail at 115 euros.

INTERVIEWPAGES

Sawa are the first 100% authentic African-made sneaker. The kicks are available at Soula in Brooklyn and Dover Street Market in London (probably one of the best stores ever) Comme des Garçons has put in an order too. The message of the Sawa staff is really nice and honest. “We have always been told beautiful stories about Africa: the man of the jungle, King Kong and his beloved woman climbing the roofs of New York, hakuna matata!!! That was funny, wasn’t it? The SAWA story belongs to a different kind. It is a story about people, a story about a challenging economy against the North to South flow. Purchase raw materials in Africa and transform them in finished goods… in Africa! We don’t promise to donate part of our income to some charity association for each pair of shoes purchased, nor to built a pipeline towards Manhattan. Our shoes are made in Africa and will be made in Africa as far as you will enjoy wearing them. This is the only promise we make. We spent time in Africa working on the brand, grasping the spirit of it. This was real fun!” Here is our exclusive interview with Mehdi, the man behind the Sawa shoes......

Where is SAWA brand available as of now? Our shoes are sold in a selective distribution network in the biggest fashion capitals : New York , Paris, London, Seoul,Milan, etc. How was the response initially? It was quite simple : sold out in one month in every shop! We did not have enough shoes for the shops which wanted to reorder. Who are your competitors? The competition is very wide : from the big brands to the “creator” brand. But , our shoe are unique if you consider where they are produced: Sawa is the unique fashion shoe made in Africa. How often do your come up with a new model? We bring freshness in our collection with new colors every season and we try to offer new models every two season. Do you cater to both men and women? For the time being, we focus on men. How do you all get your inspiration to create new designs? We try to stay vintage. The simpler it is, the better it is! How big is the production facility and how much do you produce? We prefer to keep it secret. Thank you. What are your future plans? To keep on developing and consolidating the brand. We would like to travel more and more in African country to source new materials, new know hows and take inspiration from African culture to use it on our shoes. Your messages for us at CityPages Magazine? I know that people in Kuwait are always very curious to find out new fashion brand so I will be very proud that our shoes are one day sold in Kuwait!

Dalal A. Al-Janaie Mars Venus Success Coach - Business and Life

Dalal is personally trained and certified by Dr. John Gray (author of world best-selling book,Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus) and his team in Mars/Venus philosophies surrounding relationships, life, and business. She is Mars Venus Coaching’s Master Franchisee for Kuwait and a certified Mars Venus business/executive and life success coach. With a passion for inspiring people to achieve their full potential, she strives to maximize each individual’s inherent strengths and capabilities on their path toward self-awareness and professional improvement. She helps clients recognize and uncover their strengths and reach their dreams like perfecting their personal or professional lives. We had a very interesting time meeting her this month and here is the exclusive interview we had with Dalal for our readers: Jameel Arif Please introduce yourself to our readers?

In a nutshell, I am Mars Venus Coaching, Kuwait! With a little more detail, let me try to introduce myself. My name is Dalal Al-Janaie and I am first and foremost, a business owner. I am the Master Franchisee for Mars Venus Coaching in Kuwait and I am a success coach for Life, Business, and Executive Coaching. My job is to help people reach their dreams in their personal lives, their professional lives, and for business owners, their business lives by helping them grow their business. So basically, I am the most valuable person you will ever meet.

Tell us about your education? I do love to learn, I grew up in a home where they really encouraged learning. My parents are PhD doctors and they believed in the value of education. That said, the bar was held pretty high up. They felt that those who studied and did well in school were on their way to success. So, I went to Penn State University and got my bachelors degree in engineering then came back and started work at KOC. I remember sitting next to my mentor from BP, awestruck, and feeling that I wanted to amplify my knowledge fast. I could not wait for experience to fill the gap. Maybe it was impatience, maybe it was passion, maybe it was love of Kuwait, or a mix of it all, but it drove me to go back to school and get my masters degree in engineering. After a few years, I switched careers and moved to marketing. At that point I thought wow, back to square one. I wanted to be valuable to my organization and contribute at a high level very quickly. So I thought, the best way to do that was to get an MBA, and I went out and got one and it did help me. Getting an MBA is very different than anything you have ever learned, especially if you are an engineer or in science. It really opens your eyes to a lot of things in terms of the real world, in terms of the human factor and gender intelligence. Marketing is an art all on its own.

Wow! 2 Master degrees! What made you shift from Engineering to Business Administration? As a student I was good at science. Back when I grew up, those who had the higher GPA’s ended up with science oriented majors and they went on to become doctors, pharmacists, engineers, etc... In my case, I ended up an engineer. When you are young, many don’t know what they want and this was the case with me. I fumbled around quite a bit before I realized that maybe engineering is not the best suited field for me. I was always amazed at the magic of marketing/sales process especially in Ku-

wait, which is such an oil rich country. The power of OPEC and the production cuts spanned the world and to be part of the oil industry in Kuwait and on the marketing side of it all was amazing. So, I moved into the international marketing sector of oil and became part of the action. I think this move was the start of something I could have never even imagined, in terms of moving on to coach people on to grow their business and live with passion, because I understand it and I know where they are coming from.

What were your work experiences before starting Mars Venus Coaching? I started off as an engineer and to this day, I love engineering. A lot of me is an engineer and a lot of how I do things is systematic like engineering. Working in KOC and then moving to KPC taught me the importance of people skills and how vital it was to deal with gender differences. I remember one specific conversation I had with a colleague who said, “Successful people are the ones who know how to deal with all types of personalities and make it work.” To be able to talk, convince, and communicate day in and day out while having smooth relationships and growing trust can be a challenge if you don’t know how. I believe that my years as an employee taught me the importance of emotional intelligence and gender intelligence.

What was the inspiration behind starting Mars Venus Coaching, Kuwait? It was a time in my life that I was going through a bit of a rough patch and I really wanted someone to help me reach a better place. Back then, I didn’t really understand what coaching was or who it was for and on top of all that, did it even exist in the Kuwaiti market? After searching, I found that there was a gap for this extremely valuable service. I thought, if I need a coach, and President Obama has a coach, I am sure Kuwait is need of coaching also. I wanted a company that was reputable and truly committed to helping others, not just in it for the monetary aspect. Mars Venus Coaching fit the bill and we now have a branch in Kuwait.

Tell us your experience while being trained by Dr. John Gray? When you read someone’s books and watch videos of him and then meet him in the flesh, it’s such a surreal experience! To be in the presence of such a legend who has touched, educated, and changed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people, all you can think is wow, what an honor! I am so thankful for the opportunity to train and learn from Dr. Gray the philosophies that are so crucial in our daily lives.

October - 2011

His passion is so contagious that one cannot help but want to be a coach. I will always be grateful for the day that I meet him, learned from him, and decided to become a coach and help people through the Mars Venus Coaching system.

How long did the training take and where was it held? It’s important to understand that Mars Venus Coaching really advocates learning and that is why we encourage our clients to read books and we ask them to come to our seminars in addition to being coached. Training at Mars Venus never ends and becoming a coach is a lifetime full of learning because coaching is all about knowledge. From pre-training to the actual training in the United States, and then supplementary training, it really is on-going. Even with two masters, I have never uncovered such a degree of awareness as I have since I entered the Mars Venus Coaching world.

How has the response been so far in Kuwait? The majority of those I have spoken to in Kuwait have either read the book, “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus” or heard of the book. The Mars Venus coaching company is not as famous. My experience is that the idea of coaching may be a bit new to people in Kuwait in terms of what do we do exactly. To explain coaching, coaching starts with ‘what do you want?’ and ends with ‘we have reached that goal’ and in between is a detailed SMART plan on how to get there with someone who will crystallize that idea with you, who will set it up with you, start to implement with you, and most importantly will hold you accountable. It is this accountability which is particularly vital especially when dealing with people who are very busy but still want to reach their dreams. The results: Committed, serious people do a phenomenal job in changing their lives and those who are not committed flounder and end up wasting everyone’s time.

Who are some of your prominent business customers in Kuwait? We deal with the most reputable companies in Kuwait. We help all types of businesses grow from the start-ups to corporations. Specific names, unfortunately, I am unable to share with you due to confidentiality agreements but nobody is too small and nobody is too big and the results are amazing.

October - 2011

Businesses come to us with untapped potential and growth opportunities which they are usually unaware of and, with our coaching system, they reach their true potential.

What are some of the services that you offer to companies? We have an intensive gender intelligence and sales executive training program, in addition to seminars and coaching for all employees. We really want to reach companies and help employees begin to love their jobs, reduce their stress levels, and perform at higher productivity rates.

What support do you offer to individuals who have businesses or wish to start up a new business?

Mars Venus has a business coaching system which has been implemented worldwide for many years. Our strength lies in our international team of more than 90 professional coaches in over 20 countries, which serve in an advisory capacity for the Mars Venus Coaching system in addition to running their own coaching practice. Business coaching entails many steps. First we crystallize what the client wants, where they want to go, and when they want to reach it. Sometimes just crystallizing an idea is transformational as many don’t know what they really want. Next we set up a plan to achieve that goal and then move on to achieve it. One of the most important things our clients are taught is setting up a business dashboard using the ‘Five Ways’ program. Our clients are taught to look at their business in the same way we look at our car’s dashboard. We would never drive our cars if we didn’t know how much gas we had or what speed we were going. In the same way, business owners need to know conversion rates, your lead generation rates, and things of that nature on a weekly basis to understand the health of their business. If business owners don’t monitor these five variables, they end up working in the business, versus on the business and that is the leading cause of business failure. Business owners can start with optimism and passion and that will fuel their growth but they must tie it to commitment and the road map is the 90 day plan. If you don’t know where you are going then you will only be going in circles. And, for those people who don’t plan, it may look like you are growing but that growth is only 1% of your true potential and what a waste it is not to reach your true potential.

Who could benefit from your coaching? Everybody! Everybody has challenges that we can assist them with in coaching. Everybody deals with gender differences, most people have a job, everybody has family, some people are looking for passion, but in the end, everyone wants to reach their dreams. If you are married/single, employed/unemployed/self employed, male or female, everyone needs a coach. often ask my clients, on a scale from 1-10, how satisfied are you with your current situation, with your life? Usually the number is around 7 and 8. The question is, why not hit 10? What does 10 look like? Why aren’t you at 10? Are you even on the track towards 10? The thing with life is, either you are growing or you are dying, which one are you?

Are there any difficulties that you face in introducing your concept? Coaching may not be well understood in Kuwait. Some ask, why do we need to be coached if we have normal/fine lives? Well, fine and normal are nice, but don’t you want an amazing life? If you don’t think amazing exists, then there is no way we can even begin with you. On the other hand, some want amazing lives. Some people don’t want a job just to pay the bills, they want more. Some people don’t just want someone they call a husband/wife, they want a partner for their life. Some people don’t want to have a hobby and call it a business, they really want it to generate money and fulfill that desire to achieve success and leave their jobs and stand on their own. Coaching is for everyone.

How long does a typical coaching session last? At Mars Venus Coaching, we map progress on a 90 day plan and, on that basis, we ask that clients commit for at least three months, which is the time it takes to achieve real measurable results.

What are some of your future plans? I want to make Mars Venus Coaching the leading company to help and coach people not only in Kuwait but span the GCC and move on to the Middle East. I want to share this vital information with people on this side of the world and mesh it into the cultural here in the Arab world do its not longer just a foreign concept. The first step is expanding Mars Venus Coaching Kuwait by recruiting highly motivated individuals to become coaches and join the team.

What are your hobbies? I do love to read and, I am so thankful for that, because it I wouldn’t have survived reading all the required material for Mars Venus Coaching if I didn’t! Aside from that, believe that exercise is very important and I love the pool and water aerobics. Most of all, I love to travel and explore new cultures. I am dying to see Mos-

40

cow but can’t seem to get anyone to come along for some reason.

Which is your favorite holiday destination? London Baby!

What is your favorite gadget? I am pretty Venusian and not very tech savvy, but I really love my i-phone! I think the people of Apple created a miracle with this device. It’s like my little secretary.

Most unforgettable moment in your life? Things in life come unexpectedly. I was at a point in my life, where I knew there was something wrong and this was not the life I always wanted. It started with my interest in helping others and the possibility of helping through Mars Venus Coaching. I was filling out the Mars Venus application forms when I felt a change within me. The degree of detail in the form asked you to almost relive your life. It was the depth of the questions that helped me reconnect with who I was and what I wanted. It was then that I realized, I am supposed to do something more than just have a day job. The most unforgettable moment in my life was the moment when I realized I am supposed to be a coach.

What’s your philosophy for success? Success is one of those magic words everyone likes to use. Everybody wants success but few really know how much it takes to achieve it. There is an amazing video on You-Tube of Eric Thomas who says, “You will be successful when you want success more than you want food, water, and air.” Success difficult, it is not just about optimism, it’s not just about positivity, not just about passion. Success is about commitment, success is about working smart, success is about doing something and if it fails, fixing it, getting up and doing it a different way. Success is finding what you love, setting the plan, and following the plan until you reach that goal, day in and day out. It would be great if I could say optimism is the universal cure, but there has to be more than just that. Optimism keeps the train moving but there has to be a track, a plan, or else the train is not going to move anywhere it’s just going to burn in its place.

Are you slurping down herb-infused, caffeine-pumped energy drinks because you've been sold on the notion they are good for you? For sure, some aren't bad - and some may even be beneficial for health - but there are plenty that are mere sugar, flavoring, artificial ingredients, and high doses of caffeine that have even come under fire from health experts. Why not sip on a tall, cold nutritious glass of milk, instead? MILK DRINKERS TEND TO BE THINNER

MILK PROVIDES A UNIQUE BALANCE OF NUTRIENTS According to well-known nutrition expert Dr Wendy Bazilian, author of The SuperFoodsRx Diet and co-owner of San Diego-based Bazilian’s Health Clinic, unlike most other “wellness” drinks, milk is naturally nutrient-rich and balanced with a unique proportion of carbs and protein – in addition to the boneboosting calcium, phosphorous and vitamin D. Watching your fat intake or following a heart-healthy diet? No problem. Dr Bazilian, who has recently partnered up with model Christie Brinkley for the Drink Well. Live Well. gotmilk? campaign, recommends sipping on low-fat or fat-free milk. “Low-fat or fat-free varieties provide a lot of nutrients for very modest – worthwhile – calories,” she says. “Milk is also naturally low in sodium, and also contains potassium and plays a role in healthy blood pressure.”

MILK BUILDS STRONG BONES Milk builds strong bones and teeth where, according to Dr Bazilian, 99 percent of the body’s calcium is stored. Plus, hundreds of studies have shown that calcium in milk helps improve bone density. “Denser bones mean less likelihood of stress fractures and a lower risk of osteoporosis – a major public health threat for over 40 million Americans,” adds the nutrition expert. The importance of getting enough calcium starts young and extends into adulthood. “We are born with bones and as we grow from childhood to adulthood, we build stronger and bigger bones. However, after a certain point – around age 30 – our body starts drawing from our bones to maintain our other bodily functions,” says Dr Bazilian. So it is important to get calcium such as that from milk starting early in age and then to continue consuming enough throughout your life.

CALCIUM CONTRIBUTES TO MUSCLE AND BLOOD HEALTH Dr Bazilian says the rest of the body’s calcium is found in the muscles, blood and intercellular fluid and is necessary for muscular and circulatory function. She explains, “Calcium plays an important role in our muscles (in the contraction phase in particular) as well as our blood stream, too. The human body works hard to keep a normal balance of calcium in the blood stream at all times to maintain ‘homeostasis.’ Calcium plays a role in blood vessel contraction and expansion. If calcium levels drop, the body will pull calcium from the bones to replenish the levels in the blood. But if you consume adequate calcium in the diet, you can maintain blood calcium and preserve your bones.”

Not only do milk drinkers tend to have stronger bones, Dr Bazilian says “Milk drinkers tend to have healthier overall diets and tend to be leaner than nonmilk drinkers.” And with today’s youth suffering an epidemic of obesity and obesity-related diseases, a wholesome beverage, like milk, can contribute to weight loss, strong bones and overall health. Dr Bazilian further explains, “Studies have shown that mothers who drink milk are more likely to have daughters who drink milk. Milk not only provides children with a wide array of nutrients but also displaces some of the less nutritious, high calorie beverages like sodas. By some estimates, about 12 percent of adolescents’ total calories come from sodas and sugar-sweetened beverages. Low-fat or fat-free milk can go a long way to change these numbers and add a nutritional, developmental advantage to growing bodies.”

BUT HOW MUCH MILK IS BENEFICIAL? Any amount of milk you drink is beneficial but Dr Bazilian recommends aiming for three (8-ounce) glasses a day. She says, “Three delicious glasses of nonfat or low-fat milk a day is all it takes to get 100 percent of your calcium needs met and 75 percent of your vitamin D and a host of other essential nutrients from high quality protein to potassium, phosphorus, vitamin A and vitamin B12.” In addition, milk is low in sodium and provides a lot of nutrition for its 80 to 120 calories per cup. Milk can also contribute to daily hydration needs – it is made up of about 90 percent water, which is essential to virtually every bodily function. As a bonus, milk is economical. Dr Bazilian adds, “It’s about 25 cents per cup, which is far less than the majority of new-agey ‘fortified sugar waters’ on the market today.”

IF YOU ARE LACTOSE INTOLERANT, DON’T GIVE UP MILK! Having lactose intolerance – a condition caused by not having enough of the enzyme lactase, which digests the lactose in milk – doesn’t mean you can’t reap the benefits of milk. According to Dr Bazilian, lactose intolerance is not an all or nothing thing and that people with lactose intolerance can employ some simple strategies to enjoy the goodness of milk. “Usually, symptoms associated with lactose intolerance can be diminished by ‘how’ and ‘how much’ milk is consumed at a time,” says the nutrition expert. “Symptoms are reduced or even eliminated in many individuals if they drink milk in smaller amounts throughout the day instead of a large glass all at once, and people with lactose issues do better when they drink milk with a meal or snack than on its own.” There are also lactose-reduced milks in the market and even liquid drops available at the drugstore that you can add to milk to create a lactose-reduced milk. And keep in mind that though milk is a top-tier food source for calcium, you can also get calcium from yogurt, small amounts of cheese, almonds, leafy greens and tofu – all of which can be part of many lactose intolerant diets.

Did you know that milk is considered “nature’s wellness drink”? The cold, creamy white beverage is full of calcium, vitamin D, phosphorous and a balance of other nutrients that have been proven to build your bones and teeth as well as promote the healthy function of your muscles and blood vessels. And in the midst of all the new vitamin waters, energy drinks, and other artificially contrived beverages, milk is a natural, healthy choice.

8 TIPS FOR INCORPORATING MORE MILK INTO YOUR DAY

1. START YOUR DAY WITH MILK Add milk to your morning cereal or oatmeal. Seems like the oldest tip around, but still a great, solid start to the day. You can also add milk to a smoothie to boost the creaminess and the nutrition. 2. DRINK MILK AS A SNACK Milk is perfect as an afternoon snack – a great balance of quality protein and carbohydrates, mildly sweet and lots of nutrition. Dr Bazilian says, “One cup mid-afternoon is not only easy and filling, but picks up your energy and helps get you to dinner without devouring the contents of a co-worker’s candy dish.” 3. CHANGE YOUR COFFEE HABIT Have a café au lait or tea au lait instead of a latte. A café au lait is 1/2 coffee and 1/2 milk, giving you that coveted coffee taste and enjoyment, while reducing your caffeine content and increasing the beverage's nutritional value with the additional milk. 4. TAKE THE EDGE OFF YOUR HUNGER Before a party, have a glass of low-fat or fat-free milk. It’s fast and easy. It’s also filling and “takes the edge off” hunger, helping you make smarter choices on food and drink once you arrive. Dr Bazilian adds, “The bonus is the great nutrition, but the main perk is how it makes you feel and respond to the social ‘pressures’ of enjoying a party and maintaining your figure, too.” 5. DRINK MILK FOR DESSERT Dr Bazilian recommends flavored milks for a sweet treat. “While we have to watch how much sugar goes in the diet overall, think about it – low-fat or fat-free chocolate or strawberry milk has the sweetness and appeal of a treat and still contains those essential vitamins and minerals that are lacking from processed baked goods, cookies, candy or other ‘usual’ treats,” she explains. 6. MILK IS AN EXCELLENT POST-EXERCISE BEVERAGE Recent research suggests that the balance of nutrients in milk can help refuel the muscles after a workout as effectively as some commercial exercise beverages. And it tastes better, too!

Dr Bazilian recommends eating a balanced, varied diet that includes fruits and vegetables, beans, nuts, seeds, whole grains, lean proteins, water, tea and milk. She says, “Foods and beverages should have ‘something to offer’ including great taste and be good for you, but also versatile. I also believe in a whole foods, wholesome and naturally nutritious diet” Milk can fit nicely into your daily meals and partnered with other superfoods for a healthy and delicious diet that will deliver your daily recommendations for vitamins and minerals. Here are some of Dr Bazilian’s tips for drinking more milk:

7. HAVE MILK BEFORE BED A good bedtime routine can really help you fall asleep and stay asleep better. Poor sleep can impair your metabolism and may increase your risk of chronic diseases. Dr Bazilian adds, “I learned to drink a small cup of warm milk before bed as a child with my grandmother. It was a ritual, it was soothing, and the nutrients in milk may help you have a better night’s sleep.” 8. BEFORE YOU DRINK IT, LIFT IT Milk can give you strong bones and muscles! Dr Bazilian says, “A gallon of milk weighs eight pounds – not bad for a few biceps curls or overhead presses before pouring a glass to drink.” She jokes, “I know, I know. . .I always have to get a little exercise into the discussion about nutrition. . .but seriously, this is a good tip!” So bottoms up to your health – drinking milk everyday will do your body good.

7 signs and symptoms not Take note of important signs and symptoms — from unexplained weight loss to sudden flashes of light — and know when to seek medical care. Chest pain, sudden loss of vision or speech, and severe abdominal pain require immediate medical attention — but what about more subtle problems? It can be tough to know what to do. I am putting a list of seven signs and symptoms that require immediate attention and should not be ignored. Dr. Nazia Nausheen

to ignore

1: Unexplained weight loss Losing weight without trying seems good, but in reality it can signal a health problem. If you've lost up to 10 percent of your weight during the past six months — for instance, 15 pounds (7 kilograms) if you weigh 150 pounds (68 kilograms) — you must consult your doctor. An unexplained drop in weight could be caused by various conditions — including overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), diabetes, depression, liver disease, cancer or disorders that interfere with how your body absorbs nutrients (malabsorption disorders).

2: Persistent or high fever A fever isn't necessarily a cause for alarm. Fever seems to play a key role in fighting infection. If you've had a fever for more than three days, however, get checked by your doctor. Persistent fever can signal a hidden infection, which could be anything from a urinary tract infection to tuberculosis. In some cases, cancerous (malignant) conditions — such as lymphomas — cause prolonged or persistent fevers, as can some medications. If you have a high fever — 103 F (39.4 C) or higher — consult your doctor as soon as possible.

3: Shortness of breath Shortness of breath that feels more severe than what's caused by a stuffy nose or vigorous physical activity could signal an underlying health problem. If you're unable to get your breath, or you're gasping for air or wheezing, seek emergency medical care. Feeling breathless when lying down also is a symptom that needs to be evaluated promptly. Causes for breathlessness may include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic bronchitis, asthma, pneumonia, a blood clot in the lung (pulmonary embolism), as well as other heart and lung problems. Difficulty breathing can also occur with panic attacks — episodes of intense anxiety that can cause rapid heart rate, sweating, shortness of breath and other physical symptoms.

4: Unexplained changes in bowel habits What's considered normal for bowel movements varies widely. Consult your doctor if you notice unusual or unexplained changes in what's normal for you, such as: • Bloody, black or tarry-colored stools • Persistent diarrhea or constipation • Unexplained urges to have a bowel movement Changes in bowel habits could signal a bacterial infection — such as campylobacter or salmonella — or a viral or parasitic infection. Other possible causes include irritable bowel syndrome and colon cancer.

5: Confusion or personality changes Seek medical attention if you have: • Sudden confused thinking • Confusion about time or place (disorientation) • Sudden problems with concentration or memory • Sudden personality or behavior changes, such as becoming aggressive Changes in behavior or thinking could be caused by many problems, including infection, anemia, low blood sugar, dehydration or mental health conditions. Sometimes medications contribute to confusion or personality changes.

6: Feeling full after eating very little If you consistently feel full sooner than normal or after eating less than usual, get checked by your doctor. This feeling, known as early satiety, also may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, bloating, fever, and weight loss or gain. If so, be sure to tell your doctor about these signs and symptoms as well. Possible causes of early satiety include gastroesophageal reflux disease, commonly known as GERD, and irritable bowel syndrome. In some cases, a more serious problem — such as pancreatic cancer — could be a factor.

7: Flashes of light Bright spots or flashes of light and other visual disturbances sometimes indicate a migraine. In other cases, sudden flashing lights could signal retinal detachment. Immediate medical care can help prevent permanent vision loss.

Back Pain Why Mattresses are The Main Cause? Back pain which is the pain on your back can also be caused by the mattress you sleep on. There are cases where the back pain you are experiencing is because of the quality of your mattress. This is the truth and if you are using a poor quality mattress then you will not sleep and also you will increase the back pain. You therefore need to check your mattress quality and if necessary you have to change it. Bed can also be the other reason you have been experiencing the back pain or you have not been sleep very sleep. I am going to show you why your mattress and bed may be causing you the back pain and also disturbing your sleep. Rqlutz

The

first reason is that your mattress may have become worn out or it may be have damaged without you realising it. A worn out mattress will not make you not sleep properly and also you will not sleep in a good posture. A mattress that is not perfect to sleep in will cause back pain. You need to check your mattress if it has been damaged or it has worn out over time.

If you find that your mattress has any irregularities then it is time you change your bed. The irregularities include lumps, depressions, also ridges and also some things you will find they not fine for you. You will know those empty holes in your mattress and which when you are sleeping you will be feeling your parts of your body has entered a hole and you feel like moving around on your bed checking for a perfect place to sleep on.

There is also a way you can use to check if your mattress is causing back pain. You will need to use your palms flat surface. Then you press the whole of your mattress. You will start from one corner to the other corner of your mattress. You press slowly and make sure you do not leave some places not checked. I know it would take much time to check the whole mattress. You will have to be patient because this is your life and you really need to be healthy and sleep well.

Also a cheap mattress will be the other reason it causes back pain. This is because they would not provide maximum support to your body and you will feel like you are sleeping on the ground. The mattress would not support the various parts of your body correctly and the parts which are not supported correctly would start having problems and you will feel some pain. You therefore need to change your mattress if it worn out and also if it is damaged. Mattress with irregularities in it should be changed to avoid them from causing you back pains. Cheap mattress would not provide the real support to your body and you need avoid them if you do not want them to cause you back pain.

Types of Breast Cancer

KNOW ALL ABOUT

BREAST CANCER

Breast cancer type is categorized by whether it begins in the ducts or lobules, the organs responsible for breast milk production. Understanding the specific type of breast cancer can help you ask better questions and work with your physicians to get the best breast cancer treatments. For more information on the types and stages of breast cancer, watch Beyond the Shock速.

TYPES OF BREAST CANCER Ductal Carcinoma In-Situ (DCIS) DCIS is a type of early breast cancer confined to the inside of the ductal system.

Infiltrating Ductal Carcinoma (IDC) IDC is the most common type of breast cancer representing 78% of all malignancies. These lesions appear as stellate (star like) or well-circumscribed (rounded) areas on mammograms. The stellate lesions generally have a poorer prognosis.

Medullary Carcinoma Medullary carcinoma accounts for 15% of all breast cancer types. It most frequently occurs in women in their late 40s and 50s, presenting with cells that resemble the medulla (gray matter) of the brain.

Infiltrating Lobular Carcinoma (ILC) Infiltrating lobular carcinoma is a type of breast cancer that usually appears as a subtle thickening in the upper-outer quadrant of the breast. This breast cancer type represents 5% of all diagnosis. Often positive for estrogen and progesterone receptors, these tumors respond well to hormone therapy.

Tubular Carcinoma Making up about 2% of all breast cancer diagnosis, tubular carcinoma cells have a distinctive tubular structure when viewed under a microscope. Typically this type of breast cancer is found in women aged 50 and above. It has an excellent 10-year survival rate of 95%.

Mucinous Carcinoma (Colloid) Mucinous carcinoma represents approximately 1% to 2% of all breast carcinoma. This type of breast cancer's main differentiating features are mucus production and cells that are poorly defined. It also has a favorable prognosis in most cases.

Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC) Inflammatory breast cancer is a rare and very aggressive type of breast cancer that causes the lymph vessels in the skin of the breast to become blocked. This type of breast cancer is called "inflammatory" because the breast often looks swollen and red, or "inflamed". IBC

accounts for 1% to 5% of all breast cancer cases in the United States.

STAGING Stage 0—Carcinoma in situ In stage zero breast cancer, atypical cells have not spread outside of the ducts or lobules, the milk producing organs, into the surrounding breast tissue. Referred to as carcinoma in situ, it is classified in two types:

Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS) — very early

cancer that is highly treatable and survivable. If left untreated or undetected, it can spread into the surrounding breast tissue.

Lobular Carcinoma In Situ (LCIS) — not a cancer but an indicator that identifies a woman as having an increased risk of developing breast cancer.

Stage I—Early stage invasive breast cancer In stage 1 breast cancer, the cancer is no larger than two centimeters (approximately an inch) and has not spread to surrounding lymph nodes or outside the breast.

Stage II Stage 2 breast cancer is divided into two categories according to the size of the tumor and whether or not it has spread to the lymph nodes:

Stage II A Breast Cancer—the tumor is less than

two centimeters(approximately an inch) and has spread up to three auxiliary underarm lymph nodes. Or, the tumor has grown bigger than two centimeters, but no larger than five centimeters (approximately two inches) and has not spread to surrounding lymph nodes.

Stage II B Breast Cancer— the tumor has grown to

between two and five centimeters (approximately one to two inches) and has spread to up to three auxiliary underarm lymph nodes. Or, the tumor is larger than five centimeters, buthasnotspreadtothesurroundinglymphnodes.

Stage III Stage 3 breast cancer is also divided in to two categories:

Stage III A Breast Cancer—the tumor is larger

than two centimeters but smaller than five centimeters (approximately one to two inches) and has spread to up to nine auxiliary underarm lymph nodes.

Stage III B Breast Cancer— the cancer has spread

to tissues near the breast including the skin, chest wall, ribs, muscles, or lymph nodes in the chest wall or above the collarbone.

Stage IV In stage 4 breast cancer, the cancer has spread to other organs or tissues, such as the liver, lungs, brain, skeletal system, or lymph nodes near the collarbone

Breast Cancer Risk Factors While no one knows the exact causes of breast cancer, research has shown that women with certain risk factors are more likely than others to develop the disease.

Risk factors for breast cancer include:

Age: Half of all women diagnosed are over age 65. Weight: Being obese or overweight. Diet & Lifestyle: Lack of physical activity, a diet

high in saturated fat, and alcoholic intake of more than

two drinks per day.

Menstrual & Reproductive History: Early

menstruation or late menopause, having your first child at an older age or not having given birth, or taking birth control pills for more than ten years if you are under 35.

Family & Personal History: A family history of

breast cancer—particularly a mother, sister. or a personal history of breast cancer of benign (non-cancer) breast disease.

Medical & Other Factors: Dense breast tissue (often identified by a mammogram), past radiation therapy to the breast or chest area. A history of hormone treatments—such as estrogen and progesterone, or gene changes— including BRCA1, BRCA2, and others.

Breast Cancer Symptoms Generally, early breast cancer does not cause pain. Even so, a woman should see her health care provider about breast pain or any other breast cancer symptoms that do not go away.

BREAST CANCER SIGNS & SYMPTOMS Common signs & symptoms of breast cancer include: A change in how the breast or nipple feels You may experience nipple tenderness or notice a lump or thickening in or near the breast or in the underarm area. l A change in how the breast or nipple looks This could mean a change in the size or shape of the breast or a nipple that is turned slightly inward. In addition, the skin of the breast, areola or nipple may appear scaly, red or swollen or may have ridges or pitting that resembles the skin of an orange. l Nipple discharge l

Early Detection Plan You can take control of your healthcare by developing an early detection plan and encouraging others to do the same. Remember—early detection saves lives!

EARLY DETECTION PLAN An Early Breast Cancer Detection Plan should include: Beginning at age 20: Performing breast selfexams and looking for any signs of change. Age 20 to 39: Scheduling clinical breast exams every three years. By the age of 40: Having a baseline mammogram and annual clinical breast exams. Ages 40 to 49: Having a mammogram every one to two years depending on previous findings. Ages 50 and older: Having a mammogram every year. All Ages: - Recording personal exams, mammograms and doctors' appointments on a calendar or in a detailed file. - Maintaining a healthy weight, following a low-fat diet, getting regular exercise, quitting smoking, and reducing alcohol consumption.

Breast Cancer Myths Don't let yourself be a victim of misinformation and the

The Myth: Finding a lump in your breast means you have breast cancer.

The Truth: If you discover a persistent lump in your

breast or any changes in breast tissue, it is very important that you see a physician immediately. However, 8 out of 10 breast lumps are benign, or not cancerous. Sometimes women stay away from medical care because they fear what they might find. Take charge of your health by performing routine breast self-exams, establishing ongoing communication with your doctor, and scheduling regular mammograms.

The Myth: Men do not get breast cancer. The Truth: Quite the contrary. Each year it is estimat-

ed that approximately 1,700 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 450 will die. While this percentage is still small, men should also give themselves regular breast self-exams and note any changes to their physicians.

The Myth: A mammogram can cause breast cancer

to spread.

The Truth: A mammogram, or X-ray of the breast, is

one of the best tools available for the early detection of breast cancer. It CANNOT cause cancer to spread, nor can the pressure put on the breast from the mammogram. Do not let tales of other people's experiences keep you from having a mammogram. Base your decision on your physician's recommendation and be sure to discuss any questions or concerns with your doctor.

The Myth: Having a family history of breast cancer means you will get it.

The Truth: While women who have a family history of breast cancer are in a higher risk group, most women who have breast cancer have no family history. If you have a mother, daughter, sister, or grandmother who had breast cancer, you should have a mammogram five years before the age of their diagnosis, or starting at age 35. The Myth: Breast cancer is contagious. The Truth: You cannot catch breast cancer or transfer

it to someone else's body. Breast cancer is the result of uncontrolled cell growth in your own body. However, you can protect yourself by being aware of the risk factors and following an early detection plan.

The Myth: Knowing you have changes in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene can help you prevent breast cancer. The Truth: While alterations in these genes in men and women can predispose an individual to an increased risk of breast cancer, only 5% to 10% of patients actually have this mutation. This is not an absolute correlation. Like your age or having a family history of breast cancer, it's a factor you just can't control. But you can let your physician know, perform regular breast selfexams, and focus on the fact your chances of not having this disease are greater than 90%. The Myth: Antiperspirants and deodorants cause breast cancer. The Truth: Researchers at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) are not aware of any conclusive evidence linking the use of underarm antiperspirants or deodorants and the subsequent development of breast cancer.

Chris Bohjalian gives readers a ghost story just in time for Halloween. In The Night Strangers, a family moves to an old New Hampshire house to try and rebuild their lives after the husband, a pilot, had to crash a plane with double engine failure into a lake, killing 39 passengers. Unfortunately, the house, like the family, is haunted.

The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman is historical fiction. It tells the story of four women in the year 70 CE in ancient Israel who are holding out during the storming of the fortress of Masada, where 900 Jews took a stand against Roman soldiers (and only a few survived).

Jeffrey Eugenides hasn't published a book in almost a decade, since the release of the extremely popular and well regarded Middlesex. The Marriage Plot is a much different story than Middlesex -- focusin in on limited characters, limited time and limited plot rather than having an epic scope.
