Are You Asleep? Saleem Rana

People

are often accused of being asleep. This assertion is made by people who believe that they are awake. Is this just a metaphor used to launch a pejorative statement, or is there something to it? Lovers and Thinkers ponder upon a dream... Or, is it like the difference between waking hours and sleeping hours?, a condition where awareness is partially or completely absent? Actually, it appears to be more than a metaphor and also a part of the human condition to be asleep. Here are five ways we are all asleep:

One, we fail to notice things. Due to the way our brains work, our minds can only notice a few possibilities out of an infinite sea. There are many reasons for this phenomena. Despite having 15 billion brain cells, the bulk of these are used for unconscious processes. Brain lateralization is one reason, for example: wThe left brain sees things differently from the right brain. And most people favor one over the other due to cultural bias. wThe left brain focuses on language, mathematics, logic, numbers, sequence, linearity, and analysis. wThe right brain focuses on forms and patterns, spatial manipulation, rhythm, musical appreciation, imagination, and daydreaming. Those who do use both sides, communicating ideas between the corpus callosum, are those who have adopted special measures to override the cultural bias, like meditation, to create whole brain thinking.

Two, in a literal sense, the world is not what it appears to be. We appear to

live in a world of spaces and objects, but actually this is an illusion created by the brain and the sense organs. The smallest thing that we can see is made up of atoms. To see the atoms in a tennis ball, we would have to blow it up to the size of the earth. The atoms in it would then be the size of grapes. If you were to now blow up an atom to see it more clearly, you would have to make it the size of a 14 story building. The largest part in the atom, the nucleus, would be the size of a grain of salt. However, since this is 2,000 times bigger than an electron, these would be the size of dust particles. The real world is mainly empty space, punctuated by bits of matter, whose real nature are not hard bits of something but patterns of vibrations.

Three, we think of many things throughout the day, but most of this thinking is done in imaginary time. Imaginary time is the past, where things, events, people, and places have ceased to be. Sometimes they have passed away from our sense perceptions. Sometimes they may not exist at all. When we project the memory of the past into the future, we spend time in an imagined state where things will be different for us. The only real time is now. The only real place is here. However, our awareness is seldom on the here and now. While maintaining enough of our consciousness to be rooted and functioning in the present, we frequently drift off into imaginary time. The only difference between day dreaming and night dreaming is the intensity of our inner images. During the day, we are partially aware that we are not in imaginary time, and our experiences have a certain order to them. During the night, or when we are asleep in bed, we are completely aware of only imaginary time and our experiences have no clear logic, and one experience can transform into another within seconds and without an explanation.

A fourth way, we are asleep is because we think that our consciousness is our own. This may not be true. Our thoughts are only borrowed from the general thoughts of all humankind. Further, we may all share in a collective unconscious. Thus, all our thoughts are only variations on the theme promoted by our environment and our cultural conditioning on what things mean.

Finally, a fifth way we are asleep is that we assume that there are only four dimensions to reality, the three of space and the one of time. But both mystics and physicists often speak of the possibility of other dimensions If we are all asleep, then, is an enlightened person awake? Only in a relative sense. They know they are dreaming, while everyone else is convinced that their dream is real. In a way, an enlightened person is like a lucid dreamer, while others are convinced that all this sound and fury called life means something and that the hour we strut upon the stage is of some great significance

Artist meets the sleep doctor on train.

Lewis B. Chapman

The train

is moving slowly out of Kings Cross station in London and I have treated myself to a first class seat. Well, the price seemed to be reasonable when I booked on-line a few weeks ago. I want to enjoy this ride. I need a fix of green. Grass, trees, flowers and plants flying past my window immerse me in a feeling of calm. Two days ago I was driving on the Fahaheel Expressway in Kuwait and the heat was unbearable. The steering wheel burnt my hands and the air scorched my lungs, even with the AC on full blast. Now the air is cool, soft and moist. I am slowly coming back to life. The sleep doctor sits down in front of me. He reminds me of a friend from university. I wonder where the similarity ends and this person begins? The train picks up speed. He is reading a page torn from a magazine. I ask him if he has written the article. He finds this amusing and replies that no, it was just something recommended to him. Streaks of green flash past beneath a broken sky. The article is about sleep- he explains that this is what he does for a living. He helps people to sleep better. Post-natal women mainly. The key is to do nothing. To try to solve a sleep disorder by taking action is not the way forward according to the sleep doctor. The sky is grey but bright. I steal a glance at the greenery. He has asked people who sleep well what they do to achieve this, and they are unanimous in their response; ‘nothing’. Ask someone with sleep disorders and they will give you a list as long as their arm detailing what they do to get better he says. I remember my university friend. What was it about the sleep doctor that immediately made me think of him? I can see similarities in the facial features, but there is more. The way Andy carried himself with an aura of purpose and self confidence bordering on arrogance. I envy that sense of certain direction that I see in some people. I am repelled and attracted all at once. The high sound of the train gliding along the track permeates our conversation. The sleep doctor reveals that he recently became a father. His daughter is a one year old who cries at night. I am sitting in front of a sleep deprived sleep doctor. We laugh. I say that I wish I didn’t have to sleep. He says he loves sleeping. Maybe this is because he isn’t getting enough. I concede that sleep can be a good get out clause when the hour is late and the conversation is dull. The clouds are closer together now and the sky seems heavy. The green explodes below. He recounts the winding path from climbing mountains to deciding that he could combine this pleasurable activity with a livelihood- namely physiology and studying the effects of lack of oxygen to the brain. He tells me about a sleep disorder that causes people to stop breathing in their sleep. He reassures me

that those afflicted wake up with a start before it’s too late. I tell him that I am a frustrated artist. I am tired of the pigeon holes of painting, landscape, still life, abstract. I want to go back further than the moderns who looked to early art for inspiration. I want to make paintings that create a pathway back to the very first eye. Trees flash by. This primitive photo-sensitive organ sees the world for the very first time. I think it is strange that my appetite for gaining knowledge is equal to my appetite for losing it. The pebbles come into sharper focus from a streaky river of innumerable reddish greys. He reveals that he is on his way to Darlington to give a workshop on ‘mindfulness’- teaching people to see things as if for the first time. We agree on the coincidence. I want to talk about the significance of seeing as if for the first time… I can’t easily find a reason why this should be a desirable thing to do, yet it seems appealing. He says his workshop has begun sometimes by him asking participants to consider a raisin. Look at it, touch it, smell it. He has had some people cry while doing this he says. He opens his laptop to work on his presentation, so I get a book out of my bag and try to start reading. I don’t really get into it so I sit back and look out the window. A young girl offers me a cheese sandwich. Why would I want to see as if for the first time? Do my experiences really weigh me down so much? I remember the sleep doctor describing how his one year old daughter hasn’t lost it yet. When she holds a raisin, she is filled with wonder and she revels in exploring and testing its material qualities. She smells it, puts it up her nose, in her ear… what is it that we lose? Inquisitiveness? The ability to enjoy life? The train strains against the track and a suitcase threatens to fall from the rack. I wonder what a raisin feels like in my ear… I plug in my laptop and realise it is old and embarrassingly big on the small train cabin table. I begin to write about a train journey, a sleep doctor and a frustrated artist. A raisin is relegated to a food that is good with muesli and I wish that the chairs in first class could give more leg room. Lewis Chapman is an artist working between Kuwait and England. He offers his services as a painter of murals and portraits and landscapes. In his own time he tries to see what painting can be. The subconscious mind is a source of unbelievable power. Every time you get a flash of inspiration, the right idea coming to you at the exact right time, is because your subconscious has been working behind the scenes on your problem and when the time is right, present you with a solution.

When sleeping it works best I cannot tell you how many times I have woken up in the middle of the night with a great idea. I always sleep with a notebook beside me so that I can capture these ideas and not forget them. Some of my most popular articles have been written because I dreamed it.

How to make your subconscious work on the right things Focusing your mind on a goal is key. The subconscious mind works on one task, your most important task, always. It determines what you think is most important by listening to your thoughts. The things you think about most, with the most feeling, are obviously the most important things for you, so your subconscious goes to work.

Goal Setting By setting goals and plans in writing you help yourself crystallize a picture of what you want, by reading these goals every morning and evening you imprint them in your mind and when you start thinking about them continuously, which is the result, you activate the subconscious mind.

How do you know what you think about? Dreaming is the result of what you keep in your mind, it is a window into your subconscious and it lets your subconscious mind work without your conscious mind getting in the way. If you find that you are dreaming of things completely unrelated to your goals, which is usual, you might need to do something in order to increase your focus on your goals. Take some time to set your goals in writing and imagine the future you are dreaming about.

My two favorite techniques for getting goals into the subconscious mind 1. Goal Setting Write down your goals in the positive,

INSIGHTPAGES

How Dreaming Can Help You Succeed

present tense, as if you have already completed them and add the deadline you have set. For example: “I have 12 million dollars in the bank by the 31 of August 2014.”

2. Visualizing Before I Sleep which is why I wake up so often. Before I go to sleep I chose my most pressing goal and write it down on a piece of paper, using the method above. I’ll sit completely quiet and just visualize that goal for 30 seconds – 2 minutes. I then put it out of my mind and go to sleep. When you program your mind in this fashion it shoves the goal into your subconscious and lets it know that this is the most important thing for it to work on right now. I hope you liked this article and found it useful.

When children begin to approach their teenage years, parents often begin to lose the closeness they so cherish. Friends become extremely important in the lives of teens—so much so that parents can have trouble carving out any quality family time anymore. What can you do if this is happening to you? Your teenager is much more apt to find time for conversation if you can talk about his or her likes. Keep up with current teen trends—specifically your teen’s favorites— and it will open up doors to a whole new type of bonding.

INSIGHTPAGES

Connecting with Your Teenagers

Here are five tips for connecting with your teens.

Jennifer Wagner Television Instead of complaining about the amount of TV your teens are watching, start watching some of their favorite shows—especially the types that lends themselves to discussion. For six years, my teenage sons and I spent hours weekly having the best talks about the ABC series Lost. With all the mysteries and mythology, it was the perfect show for family viewing.

Books Series work best, because the discussions can go on and on. The Harry Potter series can start in childhood and be read through the teen years. This series brought my family together for years. Moms and daughter can definitely bond over the Twilight series and older teens and parents should definitely get on board with the hot new series, The Hunger Games.

Music Parents already have a head start since both of our generations have a common love of rock music. However, you may think you are going to hate many of the other genres of music your teen tries. You don’t have to like them, but always be willing to give their music a try. My son turned my husband and I on to an indie group called Portugal. The

Man. It turns out that they sound very much like The Beatles and we are now big fans.

Gadgets and technology If your teens prefer text messaging to phone calls, learn how to text. If they prefer instant messaging to email, learn to IM. Communicate with them the way they are used to communicating and they will be much quicker to respond.

Video games Do you keep up with new advances in video games and the games your teens like to play? Do you play any games yourself? Even if you can’t play the heavy duty RPG (role playing games) or fighting games, why not get some exercise, dance, or trivia games you can play with the family? Even playing games on Facebook or mobile apps will give you something to discuss with your teens. These suggestions are not going to keep your teenagers from wanting to spend most of their time with their friends. However, when they are home, they might be more apt to come out of their rooms because they can look forward to fun things to do and talk about with you. What tips can you add to this list from your own experience? I’d love to hear them from you.

Measure Your Influence Online Asking someone if they’ve ever seen an episode of Jersey Shore may elicit the same response as if you asked “Have you ever Googled yourself?” Look, we know you have on both counts whether you’ll admit it or not. So in the spirit of narcissistic superficiality we present you with 7 ways to measure your influence online. All kidding aside, if you’re managing a company or a personal brand online, the following services will help you understand how your message is getting across.

Klout

Klout has become one of the more popular choices for measuring influence online. It measures a users impact on the web and provides a series of results; klout score, true reach, amplification and network. The total Klout score is calculated by your true reach (the size of your engaged audience) + amplification (the likelihood that content will be clicked) + network (the score of your engaged audience). Klout uses both Twitter and Facebook data to tally the influence results and it rewards users with badges that can be shared. These social achievements are earned by gaining more “Klout” by increasing your reach and obtaining more unique retweets. Do you participate? Are you a good listener? A section called the Influence Matrix measures your online personality and will display how engaged you are with your audience. There’s also a feature that finds the individuals that you’re most influenced by and who’s influenced by you. All in all, there’s quite a bit of information that you might find useful such as how many unique retweets you have, and your inbound/outbound message ratios.

PeerIndex

PeerIndex helps you “understand your social capital”

by collecting data from Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. Authority, activity and audience is the mixture that calculates a users overall PeerIndex rank within its community. It also uses a four month date range to show you where you sit within the Topic Fingerprint, a feature that displays eight benchmarked topics including; arts & media, technology & Internet and politics & news. Obviously, my Topic Fingerprint was heavily leaning to technology.

nonetheless. And it does have numerous features that post influencers on a rank list, both inside and outside the EmpireAvenue community. At the end of the day, we’ll have to just assume that it properly calculates engagement through its use of shares. By the way, my BBETA stock has gone up +11.449 since I started writing this review — I’m rich!

Postrank

PeerIndex offers an analytics dashboard that gives users a closer look at their authority on the web, and it also compares you to your friends. By default it picks a few random people to compare you with, however, any Twitter user you choose can be added to the comparison graph. Linking a site or blog to your profile will additionally help the service improve the accuracy of the authority results.

EmpireAvenue

EmpireAvenue turns your online engagement into a game. It’s a social stock market game that rewards users with virtual currency for all of their activity online. Tweets, commenting on YouTube and sharing stuff on Facebook will all earn you Eaves (EmpireAvenue dollars). Each user (player) starts off with a unique stock symbol and a share price that increases the more you share and the more people interact with your content. And, other users who were smart enough to invest in you, will also receive dividends the more you engage. Users can earn Eaves from their activity on Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, YouTube and Facebook fan pages as well as unlock badges. EmpireAvenue doesn’t offer a powerful analytics dashboard like the other services we mentioned in this article however, it’s an interesting service

Postrank uses a wide variety of social networks to calculate your overall social influence. But, it also connects brands/companies with bloggers and publishers that are influential within their communities or niche. So by using Postrank, you’re advertising your social popularity so brands can connect with you. Digg, Twitter, Facebook, Delicious, Flickr, GitHub, Google Profile, LinkedIn and Indentica can all be added to your Postrank profile along with your website. This service will give users in-depth information about their online presence however the sign-up process is a bit frustrating to say the least. Users are required to add a website to complete the sign-up process, but after following the multiple server-side steps to get it verified, I was personally left with nothing. The errors I’m receiving could be an anomaly, and I’m hoping they are because there appears to be a wealth of information within Postrank personal analytics. Without my site being verified, I can only tell you what I’ve learned from the site about the analytics. Postrank offers a scoring system that calculates the level of engagement from your audience. And, the engagement is scored by what Postrank calls the five C’s of engagement; creating, critiquing, chatting, collecting and clicking. On the surface, it looks powerful.

Twitalyzer

Twitalyzer is analytics for the social business and its able assist users with dozens of different tools for tracking data on Twitter. It’s more targeted at businesses however, if you’re serious about Twitter and your personal brand this service will be of value to you. It focuses on things like your networks’ location, letting businesses know where to target their campaigns and marketing efforts. Visuals and graphs of your reach and influence on Twitter is offered in exportable forms, a perfect tool for social media managers that need to present their work to their companies. Another one of the many fantastic features is link tracking. Twitalyzer has integrated its service with Google analytics and popular link tracking services such as bit.ly so you’ll be able to accurately track content.

TwitterGrader

TwitterGrader checks your Twitter power by comparing you to the millions of people that have used the service. After punching in a Twitter handle, the user (account) is given a grade out of 100. This is determined by the TwitterGrader algorithm which measures a series of factors including; the number of followers, the follower/following ratio and the level of engagement from the audience. How popular are you in your local area? This service also has TwitterGrader elite lists that give users a running list of who’s most popular (based on the TwitterGrader ranking) in a specific region. The elite lists can be used as a handy tool for discovering influential Tweeple in your respective city. It also lists popularity by top users, brand, gender and cities.

The Bottom Line: These services do not exactly measure the quality of your conversations or connections. In saying that, these services only give users a glimpse of where they may be positioned compared to other users within the community. So if you’re a regular user, you should keep in mind that while getting an idea of how much “reach” you have on the web is great, it isn’t as important as making meaningful relationships.

INSIGHTPAGES

Backtype will show you the social impact of a URL. A blog, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube URLs can all be input, Backtype doesn’t seem to discriminate. Inputting a Twitter URL will glean information about the account such as who’s influencing the them, their overall Backtype score and a list of the sites that they share the most. Backtype calculates a score out of 100 using an algorithm that they says is similar to Google’s PageRank. Each URL uses a different set of measurables often offering a lot less information than using a Twitter profile URL. After searching my YouTube page URL, the data offered was limited to the latest tweets that mentioned my channel, and a click stats option that requires a paid membership. To be clear, anyone can use Backtype for free although the more comprehensive analytics will cost you. The membership fee of $100 per month may be steep but it’s going to give you a crazy amount of data. It brings you tools that measure your reach, impressions, URL stats and how your tweets are converted to traffic.

There are three types of plans available; individual, business and agency. The individual plan is $4.99/ month but in order to access the majority of Twitalyzer features, you’ll need to upgrade to the business plan for $29.99/month. Anyone on Twitter can get “Twitalyzed” from the main page without an account for free, and it will give you a few details like your impact type (reporter, trendsetter) and impact score, an overall rank determined by comparing you to the other Twitter users on their network. But, for anything up and above those features, you’ll need a paid account.

Are You Ready to Grow Up? 10 Ways to Tell I have witnessed so many displays of utter childishness from supposedly grown folks lately that I knew I had to write this article this time. All of us are over the age of 21, but not all of us are grown-ups. In case you haven’t figured it out yet, being grown up has its plusses and perks… but it also kind of sucks. So much so that folks tend not to want to embrace their grown-folk-ness. In case you’re wondering just how grown you are… here’s some of my criteria:

Paul Stephen Being a grown-up means… 1. Learning how to do things for your darn self: Alas, I know how to install a ceiling fan, kill spiders, take out the trash, stop the toilet from running and pay my own bills. These are things I have had to learn to do. Sure, it would be great to have someone to do things for me. But sometimes you have to learn to stand on your own two feet. As a grown-up you should be able to cook at least one meal, clean your own house/clothes and balance a checkbook. Also, stop looking to everyone for validation and affirmation before you make a move. You’re a grown up now, decide on a course of action… and take it. 2. Learning that you cannot always have your way: Sorry, this is true. Things don’t always go your way and pouting is only cute on 4-year olds. And by go your way I also mean you won’t always get the last word, have the final say or put your foot down and have it stick. You are only King/Queen of yourself, no one else is subject to your whims and wishes. I know this is harsh but wouldn’t you rather hear it from me? Learn to lose with grace. 3. Even more real – learning that good things don’t always come your way: Some folks are fortunate to lead charmed lives but it’s quite the comeuppance when they realize the entire world isn’t made of fairy dust and rainbows. Similarly, we all have to learn that not everybody has your best interests at heart. They really don’t. There are some people in this world, some closer than you think, that have very bad intentions. Bad things happen, roll with it. No you are not entitled to have all the world has to offer placed at your feet, you generally have to work for that. 4. Your actions have repercussions (sometimes you have to pay the piper):There comes a point in time when there is no one there to bail you out. Chickens do come home to roost. And you always reap what you sow. The sooner you come to grips with it the better. This means you have to take responsibility for the crap you do. You break a heart/

window/promise – you apologize/pay for it/make amends. Don’t expect other people to swoop in and clean up your messes. 5. At some point, it’s really just you: You are gonna have to stop blaming everyone else for your trials and dilemmas. Eventually, if your world keeps going to hell in a hand basket… you had something to do with sending it there. If you keep losing friends due to trifling blow-ups and beefs, guess what boo-boo… that’s on you. You’re always______ <- – fill in the blank (alone, unhappy, having drama, getting into trouble, getting fired)? First time’s a coincidence, second time’s a pattern, everything else is a trend that you set in motion. Oh also, if you are over 25… it’s time to stop blaming Mom and Dad for your jacked up life. Sorry your childhood wasn’t perfection… time to get over it. You’re still here, make peace with the past and get on with living the rest of your life. 6. Learning that you’re not always right: There are some people that are determined to argue their point (even if they are wrong) to the death. Growing means learning that everyone is entitled to their opinion (right or wrong)

and moving it along. I say the sky is blue, do you need to argue about the shade? Azure vs. cerulean? 7. Learning to treat people with respect and dignity: Do I really have to explain this one? Apparently so. Do onto others and all that… Respect of elders, common courtesy… any of that ringinga bell? 8. Learning to keep your word: I was tempted to type that one in a flaming font but I thought that would be overkill. And this one is self-explanatory and in need of no embellishment. Speak true, people. Back up your words with corresponding action. 9. Learning to accept yourself: Sure, you’re an ever evolving being but in a lot of ways, you are how you gonna be. Yeah, I said it. Embrace it. Own it. Love it. Live it. Make it work! 10. If you can’t learn to accept others: Keep it to yourself. I could go on… and on… and on. (I may have gotten a little rant on) But I shan’t. Instead, I’ll ask you – what do you have to add to the list? Thoughts, comments on my list? The floor is yours…

Why are people attracted to material things? David Bridges

Many

people these days seem to have their priorities out of line. They seem to put way too much emphasis on material things such as money, jewelry, toys, games, and other things that they think will bring happiness. They feel that these things will make them happier in life and will make them live better lives. There sure are a lot of problems with that theory. So why is it that so many people are stuck in the train of thought of materialism and in an obsession with material things. Here are some ideas. Many people are lonely and feel that this will keep them entertained and happy and make them feel better and fill the hole that they feel. They don't understand the importance of people in their lives so they try to fill the emptiness with materials thinking that it will make them happy and fill that gap. Another reason is that they just want to show off to people how much they have and own. They think that this will make them a better person because they own these things and that the more they have the better off they are. They believe that it's a race to see who can have the most things, because whoever has the most, is somehow the best. Something is clearly wrong there. Also, many people are insecure, and are obsessed with what other people think of them. They don't comprehend that they are who they want to be and who they become. They instead, rather believe that they are who other people claim that they are and therefore try to get as many cool things as possible, or beautiful things, to make other people wow at what they have.

They feel like if other people think that what they have is awesome, then that must mean that they are an awesome person. It is tough for many people to get out of that train of thought. Finally, a lot of people do it without thinking. They are just caught in the wave of people who are materialistic. If they see something cool, they feel that they have to get it and don't completely think through whether or not they need it. Of course, this isn't the situation for all people. Some people just like the look of jewelry or like certain things or collecting items as a hobby. However, for a lot of people they are becoming lost in materialism and need to find the real things that make them happy and not the fake things. They need to locate the big ideas of life and find what truly makes them happiest. If you liked this article, a great book to read would be: The Gospel According to Larry. It is a book on materialism and a boy who tries to fight for a nonmaterialistic world movement.

Social Media Day !

I come across many people who’ve their “doubts” about if social media is really worth opting for. While some consider it to be a blown-out-of-proportion media propaganda, other thinks it’s just too complex. As a staunch media loyalist, I always try to explain to such people that social media is a proven success story and how it can benefit them. I truly believe that we are lucky to be witnessing the ongoing social media revolution sweeping through the world.

The new age revolution The birth of internet marked a revolution and the advent of social media has started another revolution. Be it online sales, online marketing, customer service or running advertising campaigns, social media has no parallel. Twitter and Facebook rank amongst the top 5 most popular websites on the internet and that’s a testimony for the phenomenal popularity of social media. Social media represents a drastic change in the way people communicate. It helps spread awareness on sensitive issues and brings the world closer. Whether you are communicating with friends and family members or with customers, social media is a great proponent for building good relationships and nurturing them over a period of time. “If you don’t say what you want, you won’t want what you get”

Dear Readers, I hope you enjoyed reading my first article last month. This month I decided to write about Marketing Brief, because it is an important tool that is used by marketers regularly. The advantage of having a marketing brief is to clearly outline your expectations from a project or a marketing campaign. A good brief is the "guiding light" for the project in the shape of a written request. It may feel as a constraint but it is very useful and because of this, it is considered as a key element of a project. Whether the project is internal or external, not all participants have the same understanding. Another reason of having a brief is for its control function. It will enable to verify the result compared to the aim and verify the delays. When using the brief for external agencies it allows all agencies to have the same information. A good comparison in their reply can thus be made. The quality of the brief will represent the quality of the project itself. Here I will discuss important things to consider while writing a Creative Marketing brief.

How to Write a Creative Marketing Brief: First of all write a brief summary of the project. Include in this all the background information that you are aware of. Include all areas and all players who will be involved in the project. n Clearly outline the expectations of each party involved. Understand the individual jobs of each player and include the job expectations in the creative marketing brief. You would want everyone to be clear about the job at hand. n Include dates and deadlines of each component of the project. Track who is completing what and when it should be completed. You must also have a date for the final project. n State your goals and objectives so that everyone knows the purpose of your project. You will have a better chance of succeeding if everyone is clear on this point. n Know your target group. The more you know about the tarn

get, the more successful your project will be. Once you know the target group defined, you can tailor the project to that group. n Write your brief in a project format with clear headings and sections for each part of the project. Once the brief is finalised, it is important to verify regularly the various elements. Use it as a control for the best of all and assure a good organisation Once you’ve done the writing … NOW MAKE IT HAPPEN!

PASSION FOR FASHION

It is not often you meet a genuine enigma, but Areej Hamada is one. Areej Hamada is a young passionate Kuwaiti fashion designer. She represents her designs in a unique style which makes her designs different from others. The amount of imagination she puts in her designs with a mixture of passion makes the designs more beautiful. Although she has recently started her online brand elevados, it has really gained popularity not only in Kuwait but also in other Gulf countries. We met with Areej to know more about her and her passion for fashion which we bring for you here: Hi Areej, please introduce yourself to our readers..

My name is Areej Hamada. I am a Lawyer. I graduated from the Kuwait University and I completed 1 year of Masters in Commercial Law in Banking Regulations and International Investments. I worked for a long time in the Private sectors and now moved to the public sector so that I can have more time for my hobby which is Fashion Designing and also for my family.

How did you get into fashion design? Since I was a child, my hobby was fashion. I was attracted to elegant women. I started with practicing designing for myself. Later when I got recognition from family and friends, I started getting requests from my friends to design something special for them and with their encouragement turned my hobby into my private work and I used to design only during Ramadan and in limited quantities. But now, I design for all seasons.

Where did you go to school? What did you study? I graduated from the college of Legal Rights at the Kuwait University and I believe my personality is half Legal and half fashion both of which are totally different.

Did you have to train or apprentice with another designer? How was that? No, it was a hobby which I developed by myself and then gradually turned it into a business.

Describe your philosophy about the art of fashion. Designing is an explosion of creativity and art in the form of mixing of threads and colors. Mixing of past and future. World of fashion is not easy. Specially because most of the girls now follow what is latest in fashion and

How much do you think you’ve come on since your first collection? I believe I have achieved a lot in a short while and now come to a much refined and developed stage. I officially started designing since August 2010. At the same time my

What about fashion as a business? Very interesting. Specially when I get so many good compliments from everywhere.

How did you come up with the name for your label? I love Spain. I decided to name by label in Spanish. Elevados is a Spanish-Italian word which means: elevated, high, and elegant. I then added the KW part to ad the Kuwaiti personality to it.

What skills do you need to be a fashion designer? I believe development, innovation, accuracy in work and discipline in work and staying away from Copy/Paste attitude.

What inspires your designs? Everything from nature. I like the colors of the rainbow. The wings of butterflies. I love the way the colors are mixed. I am also inspired by the desert and the sea. I often try to do the photo shoot of my collection on the place on which it is based.

How often do you come up with your new collection? There is no specific time but it depends on whenever I get a new inspiration or an idea.

Do you think having a strong sense of sewing skills is important in fashion design? As far as you follow the right steps and procedures, I don’t think it is important for the designer to know sewing. However, knowing sewing can always help the designer and make his work easier.

Who would you like to see wearing Areej Hamada designs? All the distinguished and attractive women.

Have you participated in any regional or international fashion shows? No, I have not participated except for the Proud to Be Kuwaiti exhibition. I rely on my website totally and I advertise through my facebook page and twitter.

If you could do anything else, what would it be? I am satisfied with what I am.

What can we expect to see from you in the future? The best to come. Only Allah Almighty knows the future but my desires are limitless

What advice do you have for young women who want to be fashion designers in Kuwait? Try to innovate and be different. And stay away from copy paste

Extraordinarily talented girl! Sierra Hull may have made her mark at 16 with her debut album, but as she sings on the opening track Easy Come, Easy Go from "Daybreak," "I'm not a child anymore." Any talk of 'child prodigy' ought to cease with this assured sophomore effort, produced by Union Station's Barry Bales and Hull. She isn't a flashy picker or vocalist, yet herself confident mastery of both shines throughout songs such as the traditional bluegrass of Don't Pick Me Up and the newgrass instrumental Bombshell. In fact, if one wasn't aware of her age while listening to these songs, it would have no real reason to come up either as criticism or compliment - the songs stand on their own, as do the performances. Comparisons can be made to many of the preceding female bluegrass and country artists who have blazed this path already, and Hull takes from each what she needs to form her own musical persona. Listen closely, and you'll hear the upbeat picking of Rhonda Vincent, the quiet emotions of Alison Krauss, the spiritual searching of Claire Lynch and the easily relatable songwriting of Dolly Parton. Perhaps the one advantage of youth Hull has left is her willingness to tackle different sounds, not settling for a straight bluegrass sound or allowing herself to fall into a more polished, contemporary style. At 19, she is still able to hopscotch like a child through traditional, modern, swing, country and more, with the sure hand of Bales tying everything together. Sierra Hull is a native of Byrdstown, Tenn. She became well known for her skill on guitar and mandolin at age 8 and performed on the Grand Ole Opry with Alison Krauss when she was 11. As a teenager, she joined the Great High Mountain tour with Krauss, Ralph Stanley and others. Hull released her debut album, Secrets, on Rounder Records in 2008. She co-produced the project with Ron Block of Alison Krauss & Union Station. This month, we bring our readers an exclusive interview with the Extraordinarily talented girl – Sierra Hull

Tell us about your latest album ‘Daybreak’. How has the response been so far? Daybreak is my second album on Rounder Records. The response so far has been great. It’s so wonderful to have people like the finished product when you spend so much time working on it!

You are quite young, when did you start singing? I started singing probably as young as 4 years old, I started played mandolin when I was 8.

Tell us about your family? Who else sings in your family? I come from a fairly musical family. My mom used to sing a lot in church when I was a kid, and my dad would play guitar while my brother and I sang. My dad also started learning to play mandolin, banjo and bass when I was a kid. My older brother, Cody is a great singer and guitar player.

What influenced you to become a singer? Listening to my mom and dad as well as growing up in church and singing the hymns.

Tell us about your educational background? I graduated high school in 2009 in my hometown of Byrdstown, TN. I am now a student a Berklee College of Music and about to finish this summer.

How would you describe your music? I feel like my music is rooted in Bluegrass, but has a lot of other influences. It’s fairly contemporary, but I love and respect traditional bluegrass as much as anyone.

Who writes your music? I write some of it, and the rest tends to be songs that I’ve found on demos given to me by songwriters, or old standards that people may recognize.

What piece of instrument do you play? Mandolin and Guitar

What special preparation did you go through before producing your first album? When going in the studio to work on a new album, of course, you have to make sure you have all of your material. I worked with Barry Bales as co-producer and before going in the studio we arranged all the songs and decided what musicians would play on which tracks. It’s a very fun process!

Tell me a bit about your earlier albums? Secrets (my first Rounder release) was an album I recorded when I was 15, and was released at age 16. It was my first chance getting to really sing in the studio and I was able to work with some amazing musicians, many being my heroes. Prior to that, the only album I had recorded was one that I made when I was 10 years old called Angel Mountain. The album features only instrumental tunes.

Where all have your performed live and where else would you like to perform in the future? I’ve performed most all over the U.S. and parts of Canada. I’ve only been overseas once so far – to Japan. Would love to travel more internationally in the future, however!

Who are your biggest inspirations? I’ve been a huge fan of Alison Krauss & Union Station, Blue Highway, Ronnie Bowman, Nickel Creek, Doyle Lawson, Tony Rice, Flatt & Scruggs among others for so many years now. These days I listen to a lot of different types of music. One of my favorite artists is Sara Bareilles.

Aside from your music interests, what else do you do? I enjoy doing a lot of things. I enjoy being outdoors,

playing sports (though I rarely have time); spending time with my family and friends, going to church. Music easily takes up the largest part of my interests, however.

What does your typical day look like? I typical day for me when not on the road usually consists of going to many of my classes here at Berklee College of Music. I am fortunate to study with some wonderful people, and it definitely keeps me busy being a student here!

Do you have a message for your fans in Kuwait? Thanks to all of you who listen to my music. I really hope we can come to Kuwait at some point in the future and meet you all!

What is that one thing that you miss being a popular singer? I can’t say that I have any regrets with playing music, but being a touring artists means that you travel a lot. I do miss my family and it’s easy to miss out on things when you are gone so much.

Tell us about your future plans and next album? I will be graduating college in summer and moving from Boston back to Tennessee. I am already thinking about the next album, and I will be continuing to tour with the band as much as possible. I can’t wait to record again!

What do you consider have been your greatest achievements so far? I don’t know that I can nail it down to one specific thing. I’ve been so blessed to play some amazing venues and to perform with so of my favorite musicians. I truly feel like I am just at the beginning of where I long to be, however. Hopefully just at the beginning of my career.

Your message for us at Citypages magazine? Thanks so much for taking time to read this. I appreciate the support!

July - 2011

Rebecca

began learning the art of theatre when she was just six years old. Her earliest roles were playing Mary in a nativity

scene and sleepy in the theatre production of Snow White. She worked with theatre groups, studied a diploma in Film and TV, worked with NIDA and several film directors. To support her career in acting she began working on multiple projects including television commercials (Nivea, Subway, Target, Astra, Soul Pattinson Pharmacy, etc), modeling as the face of the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast (Queensland, Australia), presented for multiple corporate videos (Raine and Horne Real Estate, etc) and eventually swayed into broadcasting. However, amongst her presenting she never gave up on acting. One of her favourite projects was starring in the film-noir trailer for the Brisbane International Film Festival (BIFF). In 2004 Rebecca joined B105 (105.3FM) and Triple M (104.4FM) as their on-location correspondent. This presenting work then helped her progress towards working on location for several major events (Vodafone Beach Volleyball Tour and the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games). Then in 2007 she moved to Dubai, where she began presenting all over the Middle East – even in Kuwait (Wataniya Airways & Al-Shaya). Rebecca became an RJ for Virgin Radio Dubai. She had two shows (The Lab 5-9pm Fri and Virgin's Most Wanted 6-10pm Sat) as well as working on the Breakfast Xpress as the entertainment reporter. As she worked in broadcasting and events presenting (Maserati, Bvlgari, Ferrari, Qatar Airways, Wataniya Airways, Bloomingdales, etc) she continued to study acting in hope of solidifying her true passion. Then in 2010 she acted as the lead in a Cannes film, Eulogy. She was also selected for multiple other roles such as the lead in the TV series, Checking In and the lead in the short, The Room. She also has a lead role pending in an Australian feature film and currently she is writing an action/conspiracy feature film and planning a move to Vancouver.

How did you hear about ‘Checking-in’? Well ... funny you should ask! I originally received a Facebook message from the director, Naim Zaboura, regarding the pilot for Checking In. He explained that he was interested in using me as Solonge, the lead. However, as I researched his name, I didn’t find much on him at all. My first instinct suggested that the project was not of much merit. So a few days past, I had my head stuck in another script, but I eventually got back to Naim. I politely asked him to email me the script and a character description. So he did promptly, but his respond made me a bit suspicious. His character description of Solonge just seemed to be some whack description he had pulled together to make me feel like I had a close bond to the lead. Solonge, as I came to learn, was Australian / Lebanese, a model, but taking a break from the industry. I honestly thought that he was making a mockery of me. My background includes modeling, I’m Australian and have Lebanese family ties. Was he just trying to get a date with another female in the industry? So ... I never responded. The poor guy. He had done everything to be professional and approachable but I completely had my wires crossed. Then eventually my dear friend Vicky called me wondering why I had never responded to Naim. As I came to learn that he was not interested in going on a date at all but was actually keen to respect my skills as an actor. So, I re-read over the script and saw the potential. It wasn’t until then, I finally accepted the role.

What convinced you to take up the role? I know how tough the film industry is, I mean, I’m just like the other thousands of actors trying to get a good break. When the lead role for Checking In came my way it was a great opportunity to practice my skills of acting but to also help Naim and his crew to gain the recognition. This is so important, to support other people in the industry, because in essence, we are all just doing what we love, making films that impact the lives of others. Despite being quite

the larrikin, I had never done comedy before and so this was a great chance to showcase my skills. As an actor, I am always trying to stretch my skills in all sorts of fun directions, so I don’t think you’ll see me settling in one type of genre any time soon.

Weren’t you worried that the director was only 21 and that the pilot was going to be shot without a budget? Age has nothing to do with producing great work and to be honest, I never even thought to ask Naim how old he was. He is mature, professional, kind-hearted and business-savvy. He is also incredibly dedicated to his craft. These qualities are what will take him very far in life. He has a wonderful future ahead of him and so, I was not worried at all. Regarding budget, funding is generally what holds back a lot of fantastic productions from being made. Checking In made me extremely excited to make because I saw and see the huge potential it has. It is only a matter of time before an investor/broadcaster sees this same opportunity to join forces with us. Making this pilot brought so much joy to my life, and I know audiences will love becoming a part of the dynamics of each character and their crazy antics that they get up to.

Did you enjoy the experience? There is a deep-rooted feeling of genuine passion with the craft of acting that I cannot explain. When I modeled, perhaps my career was quite egotistical, but as I act, I do it out of complete love for the audience. Nothing makes me happier than sharing stories with people. And in this respect, I am incredibly lucky and honored that I can make these projects. I could not have had a better experience with Checking In.

Where do you think ‘Checking-in’ should go? (Picked up by broadcasters here? Internationally?) Checking In has so much potential, whether internationally or locally. Personally though, as there little content that is made in the UAE, It would be great for the region to see a project that will do nothing but soar. The only fear I have here is that if it is picked up locally, some of the comedy may be censored. I only hope that the local broadcaster will have an open mind to a show that is a tad more polite than, per say, an American comedy. Producing a comedy needs to be granted a certain level of freedom to be creative and if every single line of the script is heavily scrutinized then Checking In may be better off searching internationally for a broadcaster. This would be a great shame for the region.

Tell me a little bit about your role. If you are looking for the gossip queen, Solonge is her! Solonge works at front-of-desk in the Mina Grand Hotel, the perfect place to pry in the lives of arriving guests. She is a cheeky lady and just can’t help nosing about in other people’s business. And if she has to use her good looks and charm to find out these secrets, she’ll stop at nothing. The only problem is, none of her schemes seem to work and she doesn’t understand why. There’s no denying, she’s a bit of a ditz. The Mina Grand is Solonge’s safe-haven and she is the type of girl who is the friend of all; she is the sister of all the boys and the best friend of the ladies.

She is down-to-earth and lovable but has her own secrets. Eventually her dark past will catch up with her and it is only a matter of time.

Where are you originally from? I was born in Australia, married to a Lebanese man, my mother is Polish/ English & my father is from New Zealand. What a mix, hey?

What are your future plans? I’ve taken a bold move to pack up, in just 8 weeks, my life in Dubai and head to either LA or Vancouver to chase the film & TV market there. That is of course, until the filming for Checking In begins. Then I’ll be back in the UAE. Strangely enough, I just discovered that I qualify for a Canadian citizenship! So Canada looks promising. It’s going to be a wild next few weeks, let’s see what the future brings.

When is ‘Checking-in’ due for releasing? Checking In has had a huge amount of interest, but it’s still early days. We’re putting our feelers out into the market to see what broadcasters may want to pick up the show. At the moment it’s a matter of – do we want to go to local TV, viral or hit the US market. The director is currently in the US talking to a few producers about options.

Tell us about your work in Kuwait? How was the experience? Kuwait is fabulous! It’s definitely a lot quieter than where I currently live, in Dubai, but that’s what I love about the place. Living in a busy city drains you after a while. And so an escape to Kuwait is always a pleasant experience, especially considering that the people are a lot more mellow and extremely friendly. I presented two different events: one for Al Shaya and one for Wataniya Airways (launch of their Business First class). I was told before leaving Dubai that the locals would be more conservative, but again, I was surprised to discover that Kuwaiti people are open to other cultures, warm and incredibly hospitable.

Why should people in Kuwait see ‘Checking-in’? Checking In reflects the Arab culture in a beautiful and humorous way. It is an honor to be supporting a local production such as Checking In and to be promoting the region. The Middle East is an incredible part of the world and I only hope that more people will come to see the qualities that it has to offer.

Christine Cushing

Fearless in the Kitchen Jameel Arif

Our exclusive chef of the month is Christine Cushing. Born in Athens, Greece, Cushing immigrated to Canada with her family at the age of one. While growing up in Toronto, her easy-bake oven soon became her most prized possession. She originally studied linguistics at the University of Toronto, but in 1986, she graduated with the Food and Beverage Management program at George Brown College in Toronto. She has worked in such renowned kitchens as Toronto’s The Four Seasons Hotel, King Ranch Health Spa and Scaramouche Restaurant. Christine also successfully launched her own business, focusing on catering, recipe development and food styling. Her love of teaching spun off a cooking school called “Cooking Chez Toi”, where she would conduct teaching cooking parties in people’s homes. Cushing is one of those rare individuals who seems to have been born for the kitchen, with the added bonus of a charming personality. Rarely without a smile, Cushing is gamin and quick with one-liners. She also knows her way around food preparation very well. Enjoy our chat this month with Christine Cushing!

Some guests get so music and each cook, like a maestro, should inter- freaked out when I ask them to cook something for cooking? I have been interested in cooking since I could walk. My mom tells the story of when I was two I would make imaginary food with an imaginary stove and serve it to my parents on imaginary plates. I guess I must have really wanted to cook badly!!

Who was your inspiration? My dad was for sure my inspiration. He also loved to cook and was an incredible home cook. He was a bit reckless but I think that’s where I got my fearlessness from.

pret it. I also explored substitutions and building your culinary confidence. Each chapter in the Fearless book is a bit more challenging. Lastly, I wrote Pure Food, where I focus on starting with quality ingredients, as I believe that instantly makes you a better cook. I talk about eating in season and being curious about where your food comes from. The recipes here are all under an hour and mostly about 45 minutes.

Any new books on the way? I’ve been focusing on t.v. and my product line.

me, like Andrew this season. I asked him to make me a pasta dish in a cream sauce , to see how he cooks. He replied, “no really , I have no idea… what should I do???” I kept saying just take the ingredients I’ve put in front of you and show what you’d do”.. It’s like he was frozen. Another of my favourite guests , Katherine a young dancer, made me poached eggs by cracking them into plastic spoons and suspending them over boiling water. She was hilarious and ended up learning so much about cooking that she now will gladly make dinner for her new husband.

Besides your cooking, what other What formal education did you go What new experiments you would like foods do you enjoy? through? to do? I did a two year food and beverage management degree at George brown college in Toronto and I did the Grand Diplome at La Varenne Culinary school in Paris/ France.

I love Thai, Vietnamese , Middle Eastern and Neapolitan Pizza , which is so good in Toronto these days.

Curiosity! It has always driven me to make the most interesting recipes. The fact that you can never learn everything makes it magical. If I have to pick one tangible ingredient, it would have to be olive oil.

for outstanding career achievement. I am also a fellow of our institute of Hostelry for achievement in the hospitality industry. I was named a superstar for the starbright * starbright foundation which grants dying children a wish.

Tell us about your achievements and awards that you have won? I have won a What according to you is one magical Premiere’s award, given out by our government ingredient in your cooking?

Most chef’s end up with their own resWhat does the process of inventing a taurants. Do you have any plans to start new recipe involve? something? It’s quite challenging , when you first start trying to invent something new. Then you realize , you must first learn and study classical recipes and techniques to know how flavours marry and build your confidence . Once you are great at following the rules, you can break them and create your own magic. The one rule I never break is “ Don’t try too hard because your new recipe should come from an honest, natural place and less is definitely more. “

What is the toughest part in inventing a new recipe? Knowing before you actually cook something how it will taste.

Tell us about the books that you have authored? I have written 3 cookbooks> 1st was based on my first cooking show called Dish it Out. It was the first interactive cooking show in Canada way before cable internet was mainstream. You could actually download full episodes of the show on line- if you had internet! They were simple recipes based on interesting ingredients. Then came Fearless in the Kitchen – the book that my present show is based on. In this book I explored how people cook. Do they follow the recipe to a letter or do they love to improvise. I devised a questionnaire to establish people’s fearless score. That was a fun way to

I have definitely thought about it and perhaps someday it will happen but for the time being I have to say I don’t have definite plans to open a restaurant.

You are very active on TV shows. Tell us about some of your best experiences.

Of all the shows I have worked on I have two favourite : my live show- Christine Cushing Live and my current show Fearless in the Kitchen. The best experiences from my live show include, having my mother - who is all of 4 ft 10 “ tall-, had never been on t.v. and had absolutely no fear - on as a guest – and she basically took over . When I asked her a question like” do want to add the paprika now? “ She responded “ It’s your show , I’m not Christine Cushing … do what you want” In fact we did exactly what she wanted and it was hilarious. Another great night was when I made frog legs and frites , on an episode entitled “ Scary Things” . I had a make shift fryer that over flowed when I added my fries and started a massive fire on live t.v. Having Jamie Oliver as a guest with a live studio audience was insane, fun and we made some incredibly delicious food together. My latest show Fearless, is all about real people who are terrible cooks so I don’t even know what will happen until it happens. I have taken guests to Texas long horn cattle ranches, to milk goats, and to go fly fishing for trout all to get them excited about food and to

I am always looking for new products to introduce to my line of foods and that is so challenging. I would love to build an exciting food app that would feature something new. I am always like being a pioneer but that can be a hard road. I always enjoy it more than following the road well travelled.

Have you ever been to the middle-east and what do you feel about the food of middle-east? I have never been to the Middle East although I love the food. My father was born in Cairo, so I feel like they know the flavours well and love them.

Tell us Cook for the Cure Breast Cancer campaign? This was a fantastic campaign which I got involved in because I think the cause is so important but it also seemed like a spin off from one of my first business’s called Cooking Chez Toi, where I would do cooking classes in people’s homes instead of a classroom. The fact that you could go to a dinner party and bring an anonymous donation instead of a gift for the host seemed like a great way to marry fund raising and the idea of sharing food with one another.

What other social work project are you involved with? I love being a judge on a Canadian initiative called

“Gold Medal Plates” where every year the best restaurant chefs compete at a gala dinner to raise funds for our Olympic Athletes. I am also involved with a Kid’s Breakfast club which is a privately funded charity that provides breakfast to needy children.

I am curious to know more about your own product line? What was the idea? This product line started about 7 years ago as an idea when I realized that all the food lines in Canada were those of foreign chefs. I wondered” why can’t one of us here do that? “Also people were constantly asking me what kind of Olive oil to buy, so that

was the beginning of a great adventure. The philosophy of the line is to start with the flavours of the Mediterranean and translate them to the North American palate. I have two phenomenal extra virgin olive oils, one is organic and both are from Greece. Next I have 5 all natural tomato sauces, with no preservatives made like I would make a sauce at home. They are designed for home cooks who would make their own sauce but just don’t have the time. The latest product called -Fired Up ! I have added is a fire roasted red pepper from Serbia made with my olive oil and slow roasted to develop it’s incredible sweet but smoky flavour > it’s great as a condiment, in a dip or even in meat balls , burgers or omelets.

Are you planning to add new products to your line? Yes I am working on that right now.

What according to you is the best age to start learning to cook? The sooner you can learn the better. I started when I was probably 5. It was exciting and a place where I could learn so much.

Your message for us at CityPages To say that cooking is my passion, is an understatement. I have always loved to cook and am so happy that I have been able to live my dream of cooking for a living. I feel that cooking is an expression of who we are and when you cook for someone you share some of yourself with them. I would love to visit the Middle East some day and get to share your beautiful flavours with you, first hand!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA!

The time has come around again for the people of the United States of America to celebrate their independence day. This great day in history can mean a million things to different people. Every year, Americans all over the world gather with family and friends on this day to celebrate the values that inspired their founders more than two centuries ago. CityPages had the opportunity to meet Deborah Hart-Serafini who is currently the acting Public Affairs Counselor at the Embassy of the United State of America in Kuwait. During our meeting, we discovered and learnt more about what 4th of July means to Americans and here we share our discussions with you: Please introduce yourself to our readers.

My name is Deborah Hart-Serafini. I have been here for about a year now working as the Middle East Partnership Initiative Coordinator. But at the moment our Public Affairs Counselor has left for a new assignment in Cairo and I am the Acting Public Affairs Counselor.

What does the job of a Public Affairs Counselor at a US Embassy entail? Normally, the Public Affairs Section in the embassy is divided into two parts: There is the Cultural Affairs Office and the Information Office. The Information Office is involved with the press, the media, social media, and several other things that we do such as publications, resources, maintaining our website. The Cultural Affairs office on the other end involves things like exchanges, educational programs, and other things. Like we had an American bluegrass band here recently and those are the kinds of programs that Cultural Affairs Office is responsible for. In general, we work directly for the Ambassador and give the Ambassador whatever information she may need and also help to disseminate the information from the Ambassador to the public. Whatever she feels that the people of Kuwait should know about, it is our job to help do that and help to inform the people about the Embassy and other services that the Embassy does such as the visa procedures, working hours, and any other information that the people of Kuwait may want to know about.

What are some of the roles and responsibilities that you have previously held? I have actually had almost all the jobs that you can have at an embassy at one time or the other except for the management officer. I was the Cultural Affairs officer in Baghdad during 2005-06. I was a Political Officer in Liberia, and a Consular Officer in Turkey. My real home is Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs is what I like the best. I believe it is the best job where an officer gets a chance to meet the people of the country they live in. So, it’s my job to get to know the people of Kuwait.

What is the Middle Eastern Partnership Initiative (MEPI)? The Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI), is located within the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs at the U.S. Department of State. It is a unique program designed to engaged directly with and invest in the people of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). MEPI works to create vibrant partnerships with citizens to foster the development of pluralistic, participatory, and prosperous societies throughout the MENA region. In support of these goals, MEPI partners with local, regional and international non-governmental organizations, the

rivate sector, academic institutions, and governments. At the moment in Kuwait, for example, we have a program of teaching journalism at high schools. It involves several public and private schools and therefore we have our relationship with the Kuwait’s Ministry of Education to implement this program. It is a great opportunity for high school students to learn about journalism.

Tell us about your education? I hold a Bachelors of Science in Physics from the University of North Carolina and more recently, a Masters of Science Degree from the Army War College in the U.S. in Strategic Studies. Besides, I have had training related to my roles such as Public Diplomacy, and my specialization in stabilization and reconstruction in post-conflict countries. So, I have worked in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Liberia to help in reconstruction.

I see, you have taken Arabic language at the American University of Cairo. What was the idea? I took one year of Arabic Language at Washington at our Foreign Service Institute and one year at the American University of Cairo. It was part of my job and is one of the things that the State Department does where it is made part of the assignment to learn the language of the country before you go. The Department believes that understanding the language is really important to doing the job.

What does the 4th of July mean to you as an American and as representative of that country? The first thought would be to think how lucky I am. I feel extremely lucky to be born in America and to have the opportunity to live in America. To have the freedom guaranteed by our Constitution. The 4th of July is a time to remind all of us that how lucky we are.

How do you celebrate the 4th of July in Kuwait? We actually celebrate it in a big way in February at the Embassy and that is due to the heat. But, we do have a smaller event at the Embassy where we invite our military personnel from different bases in Kuwait. It’s a time for the military to have a picnic and barbecue and all other things that we think of as part of the 4th of July celebration. We try to make them feel more at home because we have our families here with us but the military doesn’t. So, it is an opportunity for us to give them a family experience because they are so far away from their homes.

How was it celebrated in your own home when you were young and how does your family celebrate it today? It was pretty much the same. 4th of July is one of the holidays that everyone

in US celebrates in pretty much the same way. We had picnics, barbecues, parades and fireworks at night. So, it’s almost the same, except for that I am not in the US so much for the 4th of July in recent years.

What would you say are some of the most valuable traditions in American culture, and what do they promote in the people? Volunteerism – I think it is the most unique thing about the United States. We really do have a strong feeling about volunteerism. And I think all of us or at least many of us volunteer in one way or the other and I think that it is really important part of our culture to find ways to contribute our own unique skills to make something better. And the best thing is that people who volunteer do not feel it like is another job or more work but people feel good and it makes them feel that they really accomplished something to help someone else.

Each country has its own customs but we share a lot in common. What cultural aspects bring Kuwait and the U.S. closer together? I think a couple of things. Especially our families. We are very family oriented. We are very close to our families and obviously the Kuwaitis are very close to their families. Kuwait is unique in the fact that it has the Diwaniya concept. But I think the desire to get together with your community and talk is a very American tradition as well. We like to discuss things. We have other traditions such as town halls where people get together and discuss their issues and solve problems, talk about their schools, their kids etc. So, I think the closeness to the families and desire to get together with communities is very similar in Kuwaiti and American culture..

What are some of the methods you apply in your work to achieve a better understanding of the local people? Firstly, Listening. Because it is important to listen to people and hear what they want to tell you about their country. To know what’s going on in Kuwait. Secondly, becoming involved in what Kuwaiti people do. Going out somewhere where you do not expect American people to go. I really like to go to places where I would feel that I am really in Kuwait. I am very fortunate that there have been two major cultural festivals in Kuwait since I came here. During January there was the Al-Qurain Cultural Festival and then in June the International Music Festival and my husband Frank and I attended many performances. I had the chance to see the cultural performances in Kuwait and with this you get a better understanding of how things are and what people do. One of my favorite places is Mubarakiah, where we like the souk and the traditional food and we go there frequently.

How can your personal experiences in this country help the strengthening of mutual ties between the two countries? From my experiences in Kuwait and all other places, the moment when you get down to talking to people about what’s important to them and what’s concerning them, we are more alike than we are different. People are different in very superficial external ways, we might dress different, we might talk different, we might eat different food and we might have different hobbies, we might play different sports but we all think about the same thing. We all want stability and peace. We want a better environment for our children, good schools. We all want to be employed and have a job which can help them keep providing the necessities for their families. I think the personal experience of talking to people and getting to know them is important and when you do that you will know that we are more alike than we are different.

Have you acquired anything new since you came to Kuwait

and how has it influenced your perception of American and Kuwaiti life? I assume you mean this in a very philosophical sense and not that if I bought anything.(laughing) My husband did buy a Kuwaiti chest and we do have a model Kuwaiti Dhow. But what really excites me about Kuwait is the hospitality. Kuwaitis and everybody here are so friendly and they always want to do something for you and are very generous minded people. Being from the southern part of the United States, I really relate to that. We are also very hospitable about people. We really like guests and meeting people. But Kuwaitis really stand out in their ability to be hospitable to guests. We have a number of guests who come from the United States, for example, the bands and our MEPI director coming from Washington and people really worked so hard to be hospitable and loved to show them around and take them to all the landmarks of Kuwait.

How would you address your compatriots on the occasion of Independence Day? I think I would just give the advice to people to look for ways to continue the tradition of volunteerism. Personally I have been actually doing some of the volunteering in environmental events that have been taking place. Such as the Al Yaal beach cleanup project and it has been very good because I feel I am part of the community here and I feel I am doing something good and we actually had fun and met new people. We were working and talking and it was really enjoyable. I would say on Independence Day we should think about how we can contribute and find ways to volunteer. Everyone has different talents and they want to do it in their different ways and it is a good feeling to keep up that volunteerism.

Finally, your message for us at CityPages? Thank you first of all for interviewing me on our Independence Day. Follow our social media. We have our website, FaceBook page, twitter, we have photos on flickr, and videos on YouTube. We would really like you to go out and have a look at those websites and see what the Embassy is doing and tell us what we can do better. And tell us what’s going on in Kuwait. We want to be part of the community. And we are really happy to be here. I think I can speak for the U.S. Embassy community and tell you that we enjoy being in Kuwait and appreciate the hospitality we have experienced.

Dust storms have become common in Kuwait this year. We all know that dust storms reduce air quality and visibility, and may have adverse effects on health, particularly for people who already have breathing-related problems. I thought it appropriate to discuss this month on this topic and highlight some facts and remedies to protect yourselves from it.

HEALTHPAGES

Surviving in the Dust Storm

Dr. Nazia Nausheen Dust and respiration Dust particles vary in size from coarse (non-inhalable), to fine (inhalable), to very fine (respirable). Coarse dust particles generally only reach as far as the inside of the nose, mouth or throat. Smaller or fine particles can, however, get much deeper into the sensitive regions of the respiratory tract and lungs. These smaller dust particles have a greater potential to cause serious harm to your health. Commonly, particles in dust storms tend to be coarse or non-respirable and do not pose a serious health threat to the general public. However, some people with pre-existing breathing-related problems, such as asthma and emphysema, may experience difficulties.

Exposure and health effects The most common symptoms experienced during a dust storm are irritation to the eyes and upper airways. People who may be most vulnerable are: n Infants and young children

n The elderly n People with respiratory conditions, such as asthma, bronchitis and emphy sema n People with heart disease. For these people, exposure to a dust storm may: n Trigger allergic reactions and asthma attacks n Cause serious breathing-related problems n Contribute to cardiovascular or heart disease n Contribute to reduced life span.

Prolonged exposure to airborne dust can lead to chronic breathing and lung problems, and possibly heart disease.

Health precautions The following precautions can help you protect yourself and minimise the adverse effects of a dust storm: n avoid outdoor activity. If you must go outside spend as little time outside as possible n avoid vigorous exercise, especially if you have asthma or a breathing-related condition n stay indoors, with windows and doors closed n stay in air-conditioned premises, if possible and ensure regular maintenance of air conditioner filters.

If you are an asthmatic or have a respiratory condition and you develop symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing or chest pain, follow your prescribed treatment plan. If symptoms do not settle, you must seek medical advice through your nearest clinic.

Beauty and Health Benefits of Smiling

Do you know

that it requires only 17 muscles to smile and 43 to frown? So stop frowning now and again to avoid all those wrinkles with which you can easily do without. Smiling is indeed an excellent way to stay young and attractive. It has amazing health benefits too so why frown and stay gloomy when smiling can keep you hale and hearty. Mother Teresa said “Peace begins with a smile”. Letting a smile your everyday accessory, can really help you to live your life to the fullest; along with peace and harmony. Smiling aids in tricking the body and helps a great deal in changing your mood. It increases the production of endorphins - natural painkillers and serotonin, a hormone which regulates your mood. Next time when you feel low and sad, simply try putting on a smile. There are extremely high chances that you mood will change for the better. Believe it or not smiling makes you attractive and smart. Psychologically all individuals are drawn to people who smile. Smiling gives your personality attractiveness and brands you more sociable and friendly. Frowns, grimaces and smirks are all push away expressions which send a negative message

Ruby Samy to let people stay away from you. A person who is always frowning in reality will have fewer friends than a person who is letting a smile be his/her constant accessory. Smiling is a beautiful art which definitely draws people towards you. Smiling is contagious and a great way of communication. A smiling character definitely lightens up the room, changes the moods of others, and is always happy and cheerful. A smiling individual moves along with happiness and attracts people easily. The truth is that the more you smile, the more others will too. Smiling is an excellent way to relieve stress. Stress can be easily observed as it shows up in our faces. Smiling aids to prevent us from looking tired, worn down, and overwhelmed. The next time when you are stressed, simply make an effort to put on a smile. I can assure you that your stress will reduce and you’ll be in a much better condition to tackle your stressful situation. Smiling helps a great deal to make your immune system function better. When you smile, the immunity of your body improves significantly possibly because you are more relaxed. A person, who smiles and laughs now and again, has a happy go lucky attitude in life is healthier as compared to a frowning character. People who are serious and who love scowls often fall sick because their immunity is low. When you smile, there is a reduction in your blood pressure. Smiling reduces your blood pressure to a great extent. Smiling helps to lift the face and makes you look younger. The muscles which are used for smiling lift the face, making you appear younger. So there is actually no need to go for a face lift, just keep smiling your way through the day; you’ll definitely look younger, feel better and can prevent yourself from those premature wrinkles. Learn how to smile from your heart and you will not need any of the beauty products to enhance your charm. From now on keep all your prejudices away and smile way into people’s hearts. If you smile genuinely a little more than you do now; the world will definitely be a much happier place to live in. Always remember that you cannot lose your smile at any time, its right under your nose. We all just tend to forget that it is there. Make smile your everyday accessory as it costs nothing but offers health and beauty benefits in return. So what do you think? What about practicing it a little? Yes that’s right I can see you smiling! Well-done, keep it up!

Why You Should Eat Summer is in full swing and the heat is on! Despite the relentless heat, many families head to the park to picnic. When the meal is over, the last thing eaten is often a sweet, juicy slice of watermelon. That is because watermelon is such a great fruit for the occasion. Each bite seems to cool you down, making the heat more bearable. But the benefits of eating a slice of watermelon don’t stop there.

What are the health benefits? Watermelon is a great thirst quencher because of its very high water content (92%). But it also contains many nutrients. It is an excellent source of vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin B6 and lycopene. In addition, it is a good source of dietary fiber, potassium, thiamin (vitamin B1) and magnesium. Plus, its a low calorie food (50 calories per cup), which makes it a perfect dessert for those who are watching their weight. Need more reasons to convince you to eat a slice or two of watermelon this summer? Well, studies show that eating watermelon may help protect against macular degeneration, reduce the risk of heart disease and certain cancers (such as prostrate and colon cancer), prevent erectile dysfunction and alleviate some symptoms of arthritis. All good excuses to have a tasty slice. It’s nice when something we enjoy eating is good for our health, isn’t it?

Additionally, watermelon is also very high in many antioxidants, reducing your risk for damages seen by disease causing free radicals. First off, it is an excellent source of vitamin C, with one cup containing about 25% of your recommended daily intake. Next, vitamin A is also found in good amounts, with a one cup serving satisfying 10% of your intake for the day. These vitamins will work together to help to reduce the risk of heart diseases and colon cancer as well as treating the symptoms associated with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Another nutrient, lycopene, which is traditionally found in tomatoes, also is seen in watermelon. The best part here is that the lycopene is readily available whereas with tomatoes you need to cook them slightly for it to be released. The consumption of watermelon will also help you to heal faster as one of the amino acids found in it speeds up wound healing and aids in the process of cell division. Take note however that most of this nutrient is found in the white part of the fruit which unfortunately most people end up throwing away. The potassium that is seen in watermelon will help to reduce your blood pressure as it works in conjunction with sodium, helping to balance the sodium-potassium pumps. Lastly, since it does only contain about 50 calories per cup, watermelon is easy on the daily calorie intake total and will help fill you up in the process. This makes it a really great food for any dieter to consume who is looking for a simple way to squash hunger pangs. When choosing watermelon, look for one that is deep in color and doesn't have many or any white marks on it. If you are buying a half a watermelon and can see the inside, try and have one that has dark black seeds as well and is heavy in weight for its size. So next time you are looking for a refreshing summer snack, consider having some watermelon. It's a great option for dessert too if you need something sweet to finish off your meal.

How do I choose a flavorful watermelon? Compared to other fruits, it’s a little harder to tell when watermelons are ripe. Here is what to look for when choosing a sweet, juicy watermelon:

HEALTHPAGES

Watermelon This Summer

1. Whole, uncut melons: Choose melons with a rind that is smooth and an exterior that is not overly shiny or dull. Then look for a yellow or white spot on the rind. That is where the watermelon was sitting on the ground. If the watermelon is ripe, the spot will be a creamy yellow. If it is still white, it is not ripe yet. And if you give the watermelon a thunk on the side, a ripe melon will give you a hollow sound.

2. Precut melons: It is easier to judge the quality of a watermelon when it is precut. The flesh should be deep red and moist with a fresh appearance. Avoid pale fleshed watermelons that look dehydrated. The flesh should also be devoid of white streaks.

How do I eat watermelon? Now that you’ve bought the watermelon, it is time to eat it! Luckily, there are many ways to enjoy watermelon. Here are 3 simple serving ideas to get you started.

Avocado Watermelon Salad This recipe is chock full of vitamins and will help you reach your 10 servings of fruits and vegetables a day along with supplying you with some healthy fats. 2 large avocados, diced 4 cups cubed watermelon 2 cups spinach leaves 2 cups romaine lettuce leaves, ripped into bite-sized pieces ¼ cup slivered almonds 1 cup balsamic vinaigrette salad dressing In a large bowl, toss together the avocado, watermelon cubes, spinach and lettuce. Drizzle the salad dressing on top and then sprinkle on the slivered almonds. Serve immediately.

Watermelon Slush If you're looking for a nice cool drink to have on a hot summers day, this is the perfect alternative to your typical high-sugar, nutrient devoid slush purchased at the local gas station. 6 ice cubes 1 cup cubed watermelon 1 cup cubed honeydew or cantaloupe melon 1 tsp honey Place the ice cubes in a blender and pulse-blend it until they are crushed. Next add in the watermelon and honeydew or cantaloupe and blend for about one minute longer, or until slushy. Finally add in the honey and blend for about 10 more seconds. Serve with a twist of lime. So give any of those recipes a try when you grow tired of eating just plain watermelon (if that happens!). It's not thought to be a fruit you traditionally cook with but if prepared correctly, can really make for a tasty dish.

Creamy Watermelon and Peach Pie This is a great dessert to offer your guests that's a twist on the more traditional chocolate or lemon pie. 1 package watermelon flavoured Jell-O (sugar free preferred) ¼ cup boiling water 1 (12 oz) container frozen light whipped topping 1 ½ cup seeded watermelon 1 cup canned peaches, drained 1 9-inch graham cracker crust White chocolate shavings In a large bowl, first dissolve the gelatine in boiling water. Let this cool to room temperature and then mix in the whipped topping. Once stirred, add in the watermelon and peaches and mix again. Transfer this mixture to the pie crust, sprinkle with white chocolate shavings and then place in the fridge for about 2 hours before serving.

Stop Making Excuses, Start Using Sunscreen Despite the fact that women know they should wear sunscreen every day of the year, only 31 percent do, according to a recent poll by a website.

And many of those who skip SPF feel guilty about it–so much so that 31 percent admit they’ve fibbed about putting on sunscreen because they’re embarrassed about their bad habit. So what gives? If we all know that sunscreen helps to protect our skin from cancer and prevent signs of aging such as spots and wrinkles, why aren’t more of us using it? To find out, Prevention asked dermatologists to share some of the most common excuses women give for going outdoors unprotected. Read on and you’ll discover there’s really no good reason to skimp on sunscreen–you’ll be healthier (and younger looking!) if you use it. Excuse 1: “The chemicals in sunscreen are probably more dangerous than sun exposure.” Sunscreens have gotten some bad press lately, including claims that they contain cancer-causing ingredients. But a recently published review of the studies on which these claims are based should ease fears. “Many of the safety concerns are not well founded–they’re based on petri dish or animal data that doesn’t relate to humans,” says Steven Wang, MD, director of dermatologic surgery at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Basking Ridge, NJ, and coauthor of the review. For example, in one study, mice fed a whopping dose of oxybenzone, a UV-light absorber commonly found in sunscreens, exhibited estrogenic effects, which the researchers believe could cause cancer cells to grow more rapidly. But by Dr. Wang’s calculations, it would take more than 250 years for someone who uses sunscreen daily to be exposed to the amount of oxybenzone used in the study.

week resulted in significant damage to the fibers that keep skin smooth and firm in just 12 weeks. Makeup and a daily lotion with SPF are great steps, but “the protection is short-lived on hot, sunny days,” says NYC dermatologist Arielle Kauvar, MD. Use a sweat-resistant sunscreen with at least SPF 30 on all sun-exposed areas to be safe. Excuse 3: “It’s a drag to reapply sunscreen.” Five minutes every 2 hours–that’s all it takes to apply the 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen recommended for protection when you’re in a bathing suit or outdoors for extended periods. And when it’s time to reapply, new sprays like Aveeno Hydrosport Sunblock Spray SPF 85 make it less of a hassle and even adhere to wet skin. Easy, right?

Still worried? Use a sunscreen like Beyond Coastal Natural SPF 30 Sunscreen, which Excuse 4: “Sunscreen is too expensive.” has zinc oxide and titanium dioxide in lieu of chemical sunscreens. As long as you pick one that clearly states it blocks both UVA and UVB rays, there’s Excuse 2: “I don’t get a lot of sun.” no need to break the bank when buying. “Research doesn’t show any relationship You don’t have to be on the beach to soak up rays. Most people rack up 14 hours of between price and protection,” reports Dr. Wang. Try Banana Boat Ultra Defense casual UV exposure per week. And in one study, short spurts of UVA light twice a SPF 30 Continuous Clear Spray.

Keratin is a rubbery protein essential to the protection of the hair shaft. Think of a keratin treatment as rehabilitation for your hair. Taking that a step further, a keratin hair treatment will reinforce and straighten frizzy hair. Even wild tresses become more manageable after a keratin hair treatment, while providing high gloss sheen. Are you unhappy with your hair styling results even though you have tried various products? Is your hair lifeless no matter what you do? Do you live or work in a humid environment? If you answered yes to any one of these questions, a keratin treatment is certainly worth looking into.

BEAUTYPAGES

Keratin Hair Treatment A keratin

hair treatment is beneficial to all hair types, including virgin hair. A keratin hair treatment renews and restores the healthy sheen damaged from hair coloring, chemical perms and heat styling tools i.e. curling irons, hot rollers and flat irons. Repeated use of each ultimately leaves the hair shaft dry, split and wiry. Before you make your decision to have a keratin treatment, however, consult with a licensed cosmetologist who has received the special training necessary to perform the treatment. If you decide to proceed, make sure you set some me time aside for this endeavor. The keratin treatment cannot be expedited quickly. Depending on your hair length and thickness, the treatment may take from two to five hours. The day of the service, prepare yourself for the strong odor associated with the treatment and possibly a slight burning sensation. Some keratin treatments contain formaldehyde or aldehyde; look for one that does not. Many treatments are 100% chemical-free. If you color or perm your hair, that should be done at least two weeks prior to a keratin hair treatment. You should expect the following steps to take place during your keratin treatment:

Step 1) A clarifying shampoo will be used up to three times to remove chemical deposits. Your hair will be blown dry, but left slightly moist.

Step 2) The Keratin will be combed evenly through the hair starting at the scalp and

placed downwards to the ends of the hair.

Step 3) Using a blow dryer to help with evaporation of the keratin , and the flat iron at no more than 450 degrees to seal the keratin, the hair is divided into small divisions. The keratin is sealed into the hair shaft with the flat iron no more than five times per section; conversely, it may be sealed ten times per section with a 230 degree flat iron. The degree of the flat iron and the number of times to seal may vary depending on the product used by the trained cosmetologist. Step 4) Wait 72 hours before shampooing your hair. During those 72 hours, do not place hair fasteners, bobby pins, clips, hair ornaments, or position your hair behind your ears. In other words, let your hair hang straight, untouched.

Aftercare instructions: When you do shampoo, use a sulfate-free shampoo with a ph of less than 5 to eliminate excess keratin and leave your hair silky. Maintain your newly-treated hair with products designed to manage your keratin treatment. Normally, those products are available at the same salon you received the keratin treatment. This is a temporary treatment. In three to five month, your hairreleases the keratin, so you must redo the treatment again including new hair growth. If you experience side effects, they normally occur after the first shampoo. The side effects include an excessive amount of temporary hair loss. If you feel the hair loss is excessive and long-lasting, contact the cosmetologist who applied the keratin hair treatment.

Must-Try

Grooming Experiences

If you think you've tried everything you can to improve your appearance, think again. Here we present you with 10 of the most intriguing and effective grooming techniques culled from around the globe. Some have been around for centuries, some are relatively new inventions and some may require travel, but what each has in common is that you'll look and feel like a better man once you've experienced them. German Chalk Cleanse In addition to breathtaking views, sandy white beaches and succulent seafood, the main reason tourists flock to the German island of Ruegen is to be amazed by its chalk cliffs and benefit from their therapeutic properties. Try Binz, the island's largest resort and a favorite among international spa-goers. Look for skin cleanses containing the famous chalk that will draw out impurities in your skin or enquire about chalk treatments for body pains after a day of hiking.

Thai Fish Pedicure Foot fetishists and adventure-seeking groomers will want to head to Thailand to try out a fish pedicure, a recent and unusual grooming trend for both men and women. This procedure has you sink your feet into a warm pool filled with Turkish Garra rufa fish who go crazy for the dead skin on the bottom of your feet. The sensation has been described as ranging from being tickled to mildly shocked, but, either way, you'll emerge with feet as smooth as a baby’s. Top off your experience with a foot steaming and a legendary Thai foot massage.

Moroccan Oil Massage

Tahitian Black-Pearl Massage

From massage to body scrubs and even clay masks, argan oil makes up an essential component of nearly every treatment in Moroccan spas. This wonder substance contains high levels of both Vitamin E and essential fatty acids, making it an excellent moisturizer that will render even the most scaly skin soft and supple.

Ancient cultures believed that pearls had healing properties. Though modern scientific evidence to back up this claim is lacking, Tahitians haven’t stopped crushing up precious black pearls and blending them with oils to create a unique paste for massage purposes. This concoction is essentially a threein-one treatment, as the pearls work as an exfoliant, the oils hydrate the skin and the masseuse's skilled hands help unwind sore muscles. So, while all your ailments may not miraculously vanish in 60 minutes, you're guaranteed to leave the spa in better shape than when you arrived.

Dead Sea Bath

Hot Stone Massage

Considered one of the first health resorts in the world and frequented by such historical figures as Herod the Great and King David, a dip in the Dead Sea is an experience that more than justifies boarding a plane to get there. The mineral content of the sea itself in combination with properties of the surrounding area, such as a low concentration of atmospheric allergens, reduced ultraviolet radiation and high atmospheric pressure, all help to create a climate that is helpful for relieving a wide variety of skin conditions. Aim for two swims of about 20 minutes each for a few days to reap the sea's full therapeutic benefits.

The origins of the hot stone massage can be traced back to Chinese, Native American and Hawaiian cultures, but the procedure has become so popular that it's now a regular feature on spa menus across the world. The concept is simple but ingenious: Smooth, flat rocks with good heat-retention properties are warmed up in hot water to approximately 125째 F. They are then placed at specific points on the body in order to encourage the muscles to relax and therefore enable the massage therapist to apply deeper pressure to your body, meaningyou'lllookandfeelevenmorerefreshedthanyouwouldafteraregularmassage.

Finnish Sauna

Threading

Saunas are an integral part of Finnish culture. In fact, so much so that nearly every household has one. If you're not bound for a holiday in Helsinki anytime soon, you can recreate the Finnish experience at a sauna near you. Begin by hunting down one that has access to a body of cool water and where you can wear as little as possible or preferably be nude. Once you're in the sauna, keep any conversations light and aim for two to three cycles of steaming in the sauna followed by cooling down. The benefits of such a procedure include detoxification, improved skin texture and shinier hair.

An ancient method for hair removal practiced throughout the Middle East and Asia, threading consists of having a grooming technician roll a twisted cotton thread over any facial areas you would like to defuzz. In contrast to other hair removal trends for men, such as tweezing, which pulls out one hair at a time, threading takes out an entire row of hair in one go but is still a relatively painless procedure. The result constitutes chic, razor-sharp lines for eyebrows and your facial hair style of choice.

British Straight Shave Turkish Bath Also known as a Hamam, the Turkish bath involves moving through a series of rooms in a bathhouse in order to cleanse the body and achieve complete relaxation. Typically, your experience will begin with a sweat session in what is known as a warm room -- or tepidarium -- followed by steaming in an even hotter room, the caldarium, where you'll receive a massage and full body scrub. Finally, you'll round out your visit with a trip to the cooling room to rest

You don't have to hop across the pond to get one, but every man should experience the dying art of the cutthroat shave at least once in his life. The treatment will begin with you lying back in a comfy leather chair while an experienced barber drapes hot towels over your face to encourage your pores to open. Once you've been lathered up using a brush and shaving cream, your barber will then use a straight razor blade to achieve the closest shave of your life. More hot towels will be applied to your face, and an aftershave treatment should follow.

Places to see before

Whether it's down to human-made pollution or the natural erosion of time and tides, some places in the world are facing a ticking clock when it comes to their future. According to the experts, the following places are due to disappear, so, here's a rather sad roll-call of some of the most spectacular places which are under threat. Nikki Bayley

Venice One of the loveliest cities on earth, Venice is also said to be one of the most doomed. Thanks to an imperfect combination of the land sinking and the water levels rising. Venice has sunk by around 7cm a century for the past thousand years, but a report suggests that process has sped up and in the last 100 years, Venice has sunk by 24cm. Climatologists believe that Venice could be uninhabitable by 2100. The Italian government is committed to spending millions of schemes to help prop the city up and save it from the waves, however no scheme so far seems to have the answers.

The Great Barrier Reef If you've ever watched 'Finding Nemo' and assumed that real life can't possibly be as bright as a cartoon, Australia's Great Barrier Reef will prove you wrong. It's simply astounding, the colours of the fish and the coral are hyper-real. However, according to the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the Great Barrier Reef, and the nearly $5 billion tourist industry built around it, could be “extinct by 2050. This is due to climate change and pollution. A process called bleaching happens when the acidity of the ocean increases due to the absorption of carbon dioxide, which kills off the micro-organisms that make up the reef.

The Dead Sea It's the world's most salty body of water, famous for its healing properties and the fact that no matter how hard you try, you simply can't sink in its buoyant waves! However, the Dead Sea is under threat of draining dry. In 2006, according to the now ex-Jordanian Minister for Water and Agriculture, Hazem Nasser, "There is a declination in the level of the sea at about one metre every year." Jordan are lobbying for more water to be pumped into the Dead Sea from the Red Sea. The authorities say that unless nearly two billion cubic metres of water per year is pumped into the Dead Sea, it will disappear in 50 years time.

they disappear! The Great Wall of China Built around 2000 years ago to keep out the marauding hordes, the Great Wall of China is a dazzling man-made achievement. At its peak, the Great Wall reached 4,500 miles from South Korea to the Gobi desert. However, the World Monuments Fund has put the Great Wall on a list of the 100 most endangered structures and the Beijing Daily Newspaper reported that, "Around a third of the 2000-year-old structure is merely rubble and the same amount again has completely disappeared". Sandstorms are to blame for a more than 37-mile stretch of the wall being destroyed, although a great deal of the wall has been destroyed thanks to generations of farmers using the wall to build and repair their homes and farms.

The Amazon Rainforest More than 20% of the world's oxygen is produced in Brazil's Amazon rainforest, which is why it's often described at the lungs of the planet. The Rainforest is one of the world's natural marvels, with more than half of the estimated 10 million species of plants, animals and insects on earth, living in its tropical forest. However, between May 2000 and August 2005, Brazil lost more than 132,000 square kilometers of forest—an area larger than Greece — and since 1970, over 600,000 square kilometers of Amazon rainforest have been destroyed. With de-forestation running at such a rapid rate, experts estimate that the last remaining rainforests could be consumed in less than 40 years.

Polar Bears in Canada Canada's western Hudson Bay is famous for being the best place on earth to see Polar bears around the Churchill, Manitoba area. Sadly, those days could be numbered because of global warming. According to research from biologist Andrew Derocher and others from the University of Alberta, "the polar bears in western Hudson Bay have lost 25 percent of their population in the past three decades." Because of the loss of sea ice, the polar bears now spend three more weeks on land than they did three decades ago, during which time they are unable to hunt. According to calculations by experts, the western Hudson Bay polar bears could die out in 25 to 30 years.

Linguine with Scallops, Lemon Brown Butter and Asparagus Serves 4

Ahh, spring, is what I remember thinking the first time I tasted this combination. All the ingredients are in shades of green and cream and the lemon is quite pronounced. It must be served immediately because the acid in the lemon will turn the veggies a yellow colour. METHOD:

INGREDIENTS:

s 1 box 500 gm linguine s 1 pound bunch asparagus, trimmed, cut into 2-inch pieces (454 g) s 12 bay scallops s ½ cup green peas- fresh or frozen (125 ml) s 1/3 cup butter (75 ml) s Grated zest and juice of lemon s Sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper, to taste s Handful of fresh parsley, chopped for garnish

s Bring a big pot of salted water to boil over high heat. s While water is boiling, melt butter over medium heat in a 12‘skillet. Add

the scallops and swirl pan to cook while butter browns for about 1 min. Turn scallops over and continue to cook the other side for another minute. Remove scallops to a plate and reserve. Butter should be golden browned, but not burnt. Remove the pan from the heat. Add lemon juice and lemon zest. Re-move from heat and set aside.

s Add linguine to water and cook for 7 minutes or until not quite tender to eat. Add the asparagus pieces and peas and cook for a further 1 to 2 minutes or until pasta is done al dente (firm to the bite). Drain pasta, asparagus and peas with a splash of pasta water, into pan with brown butter and return to medium heat. Add back the reserved scallops. Toss to coat, season with salt and freshly cracked black pepper. Transfer to pasta bowl and sprinkle with fresh parsley.

This is a very special recipe that I would serve for a dinner party when you really want to show your culinary muscle. It doesn’t take a long time but it does require a bit of precision. I suggest investing in a meat thermometer to get the internal temperature just right. The automatic variety that can be set to beep when desired temperature is reached are incredible, because you insert them at the beginning of cooking, and the probe has a heat proof wire that comes out of the oven to tell you the temperature is reached. . The Muscovy duck is a breed that offers a larger breast to fat ration and a more flavorful and tender meat. If using a mallard variety of duck, you’ll have to render the fat for a longer period of time in the pan.

COOKINGPAGES

Green Tea Dusted Duck Breast

INGREDIENTS:

s Two single Muscovy duck breasts , about ( 450 gm ) each s 1 Tbsp. ginger juice (15 ml) s Salt to taste s 1-2 Tbsp. ground green tea leaves (15-25 ml) about 1 tea bag s 1 tsp. Szechuan peppercorns (or black peppercorns) (5 ml) ground s ¼ tsp. ground cloves ( 1 ml) s Grated zest of 1 blood orange or regular orange

GLAZE:

s 2 tbsp. Soy sauce (15 ml) s ½ cup blood orange juice (125 ml) s 2 Tbsp. black currant jam or jelly (25 ml) s ½ tsp. green tea leaves

Serves 4

METHOD:

s Combine the tea leaves, ground pepper corns, cloves and grated orange zest in a small bowl. Stir to blend. s For ginger juice, grate the ginger and place in a soup spoon. Lay another spoon over top and squeeze firmly over a bowl to extract juice until you have a Tablespoon. s Score the duck breasts on the fatty side in a criss-cross pattern with a sharp knife. sides and rub with tea mixture on all sides. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. convection . Place duck- fat side down- in a hot pan with oven proof handles, over medium-low heat and render the fat for 3-5 minutes. Remove the duck and drain. (You can discard the fat or save for another use). Duck skin should be golden at this point. Flip duck over and brown the bottom for 1-2 minutes. Transfer pan to the oven and roast at 350 D, fat side down for 4 minutes. Turn duck breasts over. Cook for another 14-18 minutes or until duck has reached an internal temp of 140 D. for medium rare. Remove duck from the oven, transfer to cutting board, and tent with aluminum foil to rest for 5 minutes. Use a meat thermometer to insure proper temperature. Meat will continue to cook while resting. The duck will be too dry if served beyond 150D. Meanwhile for glaze, combine all ingredients, except tea leaves- in a small saucepan over medium heat and simmer uncovered until thick and the consistency of loose honey, about 5-7 minutes. If glaze is getting too dry remove from heat and add a little water to get to desired consistency. Add the tea leaves at the end and just bring a boil.

s Thinly slice the duck and fan slices and serve drizzled with warm glaze. Serve immediately. * Recipes by: Christine Cushing

Poetry by: Rania Ibraheem Wheel of life How many of us?... how many times we stand in the shadows?! Just right on its border where we can see the thin line where the darkness disappear, but yet we don’t see the light?!! How many days?... how many years we keep stumbling through the pages and fumbling with each word, then finally when we reach the last chapter we don’t read the bottom line and we don’t get the moral?!! How far?... and how long we slouch in the wrong hood? Drive the lane that isn’t ours? With all those trees and buildings pass us by… along with them our dreams fade away, one by one they die. Flipping the map upside down when we realize that we are lost?! Every road seems like a dead end or just going nowhere!! And how much?... how much more it dins out of tune because the melody is not of our choice?! The instruments go dissonant, and the lyrics are stuttered and bogus because the sound is not our voice?!! Because there is a certain amount of failures, hardships and “NOs” cut as our share, we have to go through them all. With each one of them we are one more step closer to success, healing and “YESs”. And because some parts of ourselves are riding in separate cars; clueless of where they are going, and because sometimes we don’t know what we are running from or what we are heading toward, and because in some phases in life we lose the sense of direction, of what we used to be, what we’ve become, and what we really want. And because at some point we are standing upon a crossroad where we have to choose and decide… because of all that, we have to try some more, for the sake of ourselves, our existence and satisfaction. At the end of the day and at the last of our years we will be the only one left for our own. The self realization and actualization and the peace within that come from you sparring your life to be good to yourself and to God with no harm to others. Not a wasted millions of breaths to satisfy people whom used to be around but now they are not. It’s not just taking risks as much as grabbing the chance. If we didn’t try, we’ll never know. It’s much of stepping in and take a dive. Stepping up and reach high. It’s much of not giving in and keep down. Not giving up and believe we can.

Abdul Azziz Waited You had me at the palm of your hand. I waited and waited. Then when you finally reached me, You smashed me into grains of sand...

Poetry by: David Cox

Why had I waited?! You needed your time to work out your kinks. I waited and waited. Then I finally realized,

Gaihwa Have you ever felt like a mug? I’m fixing for my fix. A draught of the precious black stuff

I was waiting for a fish to blink...

Dripping with berry blackness, its corrosive acid warms and sloughs against my insides...

Why had I waited?!

Telling me that everything is goin’ to be alright

Being the man, you should have known the best conduct.

My tall, grande small friends watch over me, like English royals with their large ears Bearing down on me with their Ark of the Covenant steam

I waited and waited.

Filling me with more steam, when I’m out of it

Then it turned out to be,

These fountains pump with so much surreal energy

A foolish way of self destruct...

That I can only express when the black stuff courses through my veins

Why had I waited?!

Feigning the sick richness of dopamine in my vessels Filling my sails as I slip, slip, slip off the shore.

You promised through life nothing would do us apart. I waited and waited. Then when I grew up I learnt,

Lost in my Bedroom

Skinned knees are easier to fix than a broken heart... Why had I waited?!

The tiled floors of this medina pass me by

We may have tried hard to come along.

Because I cannot plough these words from my brain that

I waited and waited. Then I waited little more. But obviously something kept getting wrong.

Heat could perhaps have got out. Tweezered-out words hurting as they

We are just proving we just don't belong... Why had I waited?! Why had we waited?!

Drip from the tiny lips of my destitution.

Boy Chanel Bag Its name might immediately betray its masculine qualities, but if ever there was a time that was ripe for the launch of a women's bag with a mannish lean, Chanel did well to pick this one. After all, this is a period in which a masculine undertone permeates through much of women's fashion; an undertone that we only expect to strengthen as 2012 approaches, bringing with it an expected 1930s revival. There's another fact revealed: this masculine undertone is not modern or futuristic, nor based on experimentation with androgyny. Instead, it's a masculine undertone that carries with it heritage appeal. And few fashion houses do heritage as well as Chanel. So it is that masculine qualities merge with heritage appeal to shape one of Chanel's autumn / fall 2011 offerings: the Boy bag.

Latest Belt Purse Fashion Trends for summer 2011 It may be hard to believe that the belt purse trend would become trendy again, but they are definitely back for 2011, and with a twist! These belt purses are made from luxury materials and are an incredible accessory for girls and women who don’t like to constantly hold their purses by hand or carry them on their shoulders. They provide enough room to not only hold a credit card, but also a mirror and even lipstick, yet it still is small enough to fit any outfit making it logical for it to come back with the spring and summer fashion trends. These fashionable belts are coming back thanks to designer Emilio Pucci and Diane von Furstenberg as well as such as Hermes and Jaeger London. The latest accessories are versatile enough to go with many types of clothing and the latest accessories. They can go casual by paring them with jeans and a simple top, or more upscale with a beautifully flowing maxi dress.

These fashion accessories can be worn wrapped around the hips or the waist. They are available as a separate piece that can be attached to any belt you already own, or bought with the intention to use with just one belt.
