FROM THE EDITOR Dear Readers, Where did the summer go? We hope yours flew by with a family vacation, summer camps, and fun in the sun! As fall approaches, families are busy preparing for school to kick back in gear. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re like most families, the beginning of the school year brings mixed emotions.

Parents often feel relieved to return to a routine and get a break from arranging summer entertainment, concerned about how children will adjust to a new school year, fearful of new academic and behavior challenges, optimistic about whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s to come, or even sad or guilty about lack of quality time spent. Children feel excited to see friends, proud to move to another grade level, ashamed about being held

back a grade, or anxious about a new school year, new teachers, new classmates. College brings even more mixed emotions and challenges as independence and increased responsiblity bring freedom yet also fear. We've got some great articles to help you get back into the school routine, from ideas for bedtime routines to advice on getting through first day nerves. Our FashionPages also bring you some of the latest in fashion trends, both local and international. Mark Twain once said, "What work I have done I have done because it has been play. If it had been work I shouldn't have done it." I was reminded how fantastic it is to work in an industry fueled by creativity and insight. I got the same feeling while interviewing Lina Fouad Al-Saleh in this issue, a seasoned marketer. If this was just work to us, after all, CityPages wouldn't exist and we could pack up our bags and call it a day. Instead, we're already jumping into the next issue, nailing down plans for our upcoming events, reviewing some interesting new stuff and meeting interesting personalities for our next month's interview section.

Bumber-by-Number show at “Bumber By Number” is an interactive and fully immersive Paint-by-Number art exhibit curated by Marlow Harris and JoDavid for the 2011 Bumbershoot Arts Festival. The show features an interactive audience participatory paint-by-number homage to Edouard Manet’s “The Picnic” (“Le Dejeuner sur L’Herbe”) by artist Ryan Feddersen. In addition, bask in the glory of Victoria BC artist Bill Blair’s amazing life-size paint-by-number banners and guitars, and local Seattle artists create incredible canvases of altered vintage Paint-by-Numbers.

Over 40 modern, contemporary, abstract and pop surrealist artists were given vintage completed Paint-by-Number paintings and asked to alter them in their own style.

Ryan Feddersen has created a tableau complete with hand-cast wax crayons used to bring her murals to life.

Bedtime Routine

to Give your Kids a Chance to Tell you About their School Day Paul Stephen

it's time to start getting ready for bed. After your bath, brush your teeth and get

"Ok, your pajamas on. It's getting late."

If you have a bedtime routine, pat yourself on the back. Bedtime routines are so vital, especially for young children. Consider adding one more step to your bedtime routine. Give your kids a chance to tell you about their school day. Remember that if your child is in school all day, your teacher is with your son or daughter for an average of 30 hours a week. That's almost the equivalent of a full work week. You've missed quite a bit of time with your child. Make an effort to keep the communication free flowing. If you set good habits while your child is young, it'll be easier to talk about just anything as the years pass. For starters, don't ask yes or no answers. You don't want to establish a nightly Q & A, but rather two-way communication. Sometimes "tell me about your day" doesn't generate much conversation. You could begin with, "tell me five things that happened today; recess and lunch don't count." That is usually a great ice breaker. Kids learn real quickly that if you don't ask, they're not telling. In addition to asking what was for lunch, ask who your child sat next to.

Who did they play with at recess? What did that play during recess? Was anyone sick today? Did anything funny or embarrassing happen to anyone in school today? Sometime it is difficult to keep track of the specials. By specials I mean: gym, music, art, computer lab, etc.; the extra classes that usually take place with a different teacher outside of the main classroom. Keep a cheat sheet if you need to; ask what activity they did in gym. If you can get your child to tell you about someone who may have had a hard time (in gym, with math, with reading aloud, etc.) it is a great segue for a life lesson in difficulties and hurt feelings. It really doesn't matter what you talk about; it's more important that you talk. Make talking about your kid's day a regular part of the bedtime routine, you'll be surprised what you learn!

Time management is a skill that many of us seem to learn through necessity. The problem with learning a skill through necessity is that, more often than not, bad habits creep in and, although the skill may be useful in general, we do not use it to its full potential. Taking the time to read up on improving your time management skills can lead to great rewards. Some examples are: • The elimination of procrastination and avoidance-of-tasks • Easier, quicker, evaluation of your work and abilities • Less worrying about deadlines • More productivity • More relaxation time, and, • The obvious one - An overall increase in time Time management is a skill that takes time to development and perfect. It also is a skill that is different for everyone. Your best bet is to try a variety of different approaches until something clicks in your brain and sticks in your routine.

Here are a handful of tips to consider: 1. Make Lists: Write as much down as you can. If you don’t carry a planner or notebook already, start. Personally, I’ve always preferred a small, simple, whitelined notebook because you aren’t restricted by the various boxes and lines of the average planner. A simple To Do List is often a huge help to anyone, but I can attest gleefully to the 3 Lists of 3 Method more than any other. You’re goal is to avoid a list that reaches outrageous length and is overwhelming to even look at. 2. Make Use of Down Time: Using walking, driving, showering, or otherwise “dead” times to plan. Think about what your goals are for that day or the next. Which goals are most important? Prioritization is the key. 3. Reward Yourself: Whenever you accomplish something, especially the important things, make sure to take the time to reward yourself. A Clockwork Orange author Anthony Burgess’ used the “Martini Method” to get things done. Burgess set a goal of 1,000 words per day. When he finished his word count, he’d relax with a martini and take the day off. Maybe a martini isn’t the ideal reward for some of us, but the method stands useful. 4. Concentrate on One Thing: The human mind works more efficiently when it is focused. As we’ve seen before multitasking is actually a disadvantage to productivity. Focus on one thing and get it done. Take care not to bleed tasks into each other. At times, multitasking may seem like a more efficient route, but it is probably not. 5. Avoid Procrastination at All Costs: When trying to be more productive and trying to save time, procrastination should be avoided like nothing else. It is the ultimate productivity-killer.

Set up a Long Term Planner: In the everyday drab of life, we can often lose sight of our goals. Setting up a long term planner will help you envision your long term goals and rationalize your current objectives. Whenever you find yourself thinking “Why am I putting myself through this work right now? I could be home watching Lost.” just take a look at your long term planner and you’ll be reminded of paying off your mortgage or saving up enough for your child’s college tuition. Revise this long term planner monthly to keep goals up-to-date. 9. Employ a program like RescueTime: This is a lightweight app that records and graphs how you spend your time on your computer. Those “2-minute” breaks to check out Digg, or play a flash game on some website, or email Aunt Betty, can add up to quite a bit of wasted productivity and wasted time. RescueTime will allow you to see exactly how you spent your time and will even send a weekly report to your email. 10. Work in a Team: This tip works hand-in-hand with tip # 7. Although giving up responsibilities is a scary thought for some, it is an invaluable method to increase the average team productivity of all involved. Make sure the team goals are clear and make sure everyone knows who is responsible for given tasks. Make sure all lines of communication are always open. A clogged or blocked line will have the opposite effect on productivity. Give tasks to those who are best suited for them and things will get done faster.

6. Set Personal Deadlines: Nobody likes deadlines. They cause stress, aggravation, worry, and, more stress. A guaranteed way to alleviate some of this stress is to set your own earlier deadlines. Be realistic but demanding of yourself. Challenge yourself and, referring to tip 3, reward yourself for a meeting a difficult challenge. Not only will this save you time and make you more productive in the long run, but you will also have a buffer time with little to no penalties compared to those received for missing a real deadline. Of course, this tip has potential for abuse, so be sure to make your own penalties for missing your personal deadlines.

11. Be Careful to Avoid Burnout: Burnout occurs when your body and mind can no longer keep up with the tasks you demand of them. Don’t try to force yourself to do the impossible. Delegate time for important tasks, but always be sure to leave time for relaxation and reflection. Review your recent accomplishments and make sure you feel good. Review and reflection is one of the best ways to gain confidence and higher confidence means more productivity.

7. Delegate Responsibilities: It is not uncommon for people to take on more than they can handle. The overestimation of one’s abilities, though not necessarily

Ways to Deal with Stress at the Office David Bridges

Are you encountering stress in the workplace? At times, challenges and stressful situations can occur at the office. Whether it is dealing with deadlines, your workload, completing tasks, expectations from others or yourself, organization, rude customers, coworkers, your boss, there are ways to lower the stress level and create a better relaxed environment to work in. This may require making a few adjustments. Get a good 7-8 hours of sleep the night before. This will provide the energy and strength for your day ahead. If you go into work with just a few hours of sleep, you are more likely to be drained, overwhelmed and create a stressful day for yourself Eat a healthy breakfast in the morning to tackle the day ahead. With lots of fruit, or oatmeal, yogurt, smoothie, cereal, toast and pancakes. Prioritize your work. Decide what should be completed first, the tasks that have deadlines and what other work can wait a little longer. Although there may be a lot to do, learn to do one thing at time. When you try to tackle many tasks at the same time because it has to be done, it can get rather stressful. If your task does not have deadline, work at your own pace and do not rush to get it done. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t work incessantly because there are lots of assignment and tasks to complete. With that mentality, you will feel overwhelmed and stressed. Instead, take small breaks to relax your mind and body. Whether it is 5-10 minute walk around your building or in your department, getting some fresh air, eating a snack, it helps in a great way to relieve any stress. You can also take your iPod with you to listen to music as you walk. When you change your atmosphere for a few minutes it can help in a great way.

Identify the specific thing that is stressing you at work. Is it your workload, coworkers, customers, expectations, expectations of yourself, deadlines or your boss. When you recognize what it is that stresses you, then you can develop effective ways to manage that area. If you accept extra work that is given to you and have not completed your own workload. This can often cause stress. Do not always say yes, learn to say No, be truthful and explain very gently why you have to turn down extra work. You do not always have to please everyone. Only you know how much you can handle. If your present load is too much to handle. Consider asking for help from other coworkers. This will reduce any stress. Make every effort to be in good terms with your coworkers. Communicate effectively with your coworkers concerning group projects to avoid any conflict or misunderstanding. Do not let negative and hard to get along coworkers create stress for you. Keep your peace. Keep your files, folders, stationery organized and where you can easily find it. At the end of the day, place them where you can find them if you need it for the next day. Get rid of clutter around your desk and keep your desk area organized.

Hannah Velten There are over 1.37 billion cattle in the world. How many have you met? Chances are if you live in the West, not many, or none. You can imagine being close to a cow: experiencing their weighty bulk near you, feeling their hot, grassy breath on your face, touching their cool, slimy muzzle or experiencing their curling, sandpaper-like tongue licking your skin. Our ancestors would have known this close contact with cattle, living and working with them, relying on them almost exclusively for food and labour, and even sharing their diseases. This unique relationship between humans and cattle has shaped millennia of global history and culture – both in religious and secular life. In fact, as one commentator states, ‘No other event in early history was of such comparably far reaching significance for the development of human culture as the domestication of oxen. From their limited global beginnings in the Near East, the Indus Valley and Africa, the ‘man-made’ domestic cow followed in the wake of human movement; becoming the symbol of a civilized life. Cattle were revered, loved, exalted and romanticized. Today, cattle are on virtually every continent in the world and the word ‘cow’ is recognized in 539 different languages and dialects. Yet, in the West, most cows are hidden away on farms where only a few lucky people continue to relate with them. We do have a cattle culture of sorts in the modern Western world, but it is generally not a happy lot for the cow. Cattle cultures are now big business: dictated by the consumers, fast-food outlets and supermarkets, processors, abattoirs, transporters, auctioneers, commodity traders, vets and scientists – there are few romantic associations attached to modern cattle production, except the sight of cattle grazing in the fields. But what does this mean for cows, and our re-

lationship with them? Our huge, urban societies demand a steady supply of lean meat, wholesome milk and leather, of a uniform quality at a reasonable price. To meet these demands, the cow has been turned into an object – one that is bred, reared and grown to specification, as cheaply as possible, which means essentially that economies of scale dictate the means of production. Although cattle have largely escaped the excesses of intensive production compared with pigs and poultry, there are now far fewer people looking after more cows than ever before: this is as true of cattle in automated beef-lots as of those being raised on cattle stations in Latin America and Australia. If there are fewer people looking after cattle, is it obvious that the majority of beef- and veal-eaters, milk-drinkers and leather wearers have not the slightest link with cattle. As a consequence, most cattle production, transportation and slaughter goes on behind ‘closed

doors’, and it is only through investigative journalism, animal rights campaigners, environmentalists and the mass media that our current cultural views and opinions of cattle are formed. As a result, people today are generally ignorant of cattle: for example, few realize that the cow has to have a calf before she will give milk; she does not produce milk naturally for humans. Surviving your child's first-ever day at school When I was a kid, I never understood why all parents said that they cried on their children's first days at school. I would actually laugh when moms described the intense emotions involved in a kid's transition into preschool or kindergarten. Why, I thought, would anyone make such an ordinary milestone so emotional? Then, of course, I had my own child. And, as everyone warned me, I was just a few blinks away from turning around and seeing not a baby, not a toddler, but a preschooler -- ready for school with a backpack full of crayons and scissors. Holy cow -- this is that feeling they were all talking about, huh? There are plenty of survival guides in the market for helping your child cope with his first day at school, but we moms need a little school day TLC, as well. Here are a few mom-to-mom tips for handling your child's transition from "baby" into "student." 1. Pat yourself on the back. When I saw my precious little girl getting ready to tackle the wild world of preschool, a flood of emotions hit me. They included memories, hopes, dreams, and fears. Most powerfully, though, they contained that pressing question: Have I done a good job? For the past three and a half years, I've been my child's 24/7 teacher, mother, friend, and guide. And now, as I prepare to watch her transition into a world independent of me, I deserve to give myself credit. Yes, I've done a good job. And, if you're emotional about your child's first day at school, you've certainly done a good job, too. 2. Remember that you're still a mom. When another person has your child for 20 to 30 hours per week, it's easy to feel crowded out, or somehow less important. But the fact of the matter is that, while you are no longer the center of your child's universe, you are still her mother. Bear in mind, as you prepare for your child's first day of school, that this is not the end of your tenure as a parent. This is simply a step into the next chapter. Hold the mywork-is-done tears until your child graduates from high school or college or, better yet, recognize that you'll remain Mama for the rest of your life. 3. Take pictures. Remember how quickly these last few years have passed, since you watched your child grow from a blip on an ultrasound to a backpack-toting pupil? Yeah, I don't remember much about that, either. Your kid's childhood is flying by at the speed of light, and moments that seem permanent now will quickly fade into the mists of memory. Take lots of photographs of your child's first school day. You'll treasure these fleeting images in the years to come. 4. Stay positive. Keep a good attitude about your child's first day at school. If you seem to be upset about it, your attitude is likely to rub off on your kids and trigger anxieties and behavioral disturbances. If your rising kindergartner happens to catch you crying -- or if you outright burst into tears while hugging her goodby -- make sure that you explain that these are "happy tears." Let your child know that you are excited and proud for her, and that you know she will enjoy school.

5. Live for the moment. Don't focus all of your energy right now on your memories of your child's past as a helpless newborn, and don't focus your mind's eye on her future as valedictorian or a Harvard graduate. Instead, keep your mind on the here and now. The past is over and the future is unknown. What you do know is that you have a child, that your child is going to school for the first time, and that you owe it to your entire family to be as present as possible for this wonderful occasion. You will never again have the chance to send your child off to his first-ever day of school. Enjoy this very special day while it lasts. The next time you turn around, you'll be hearing "Pomp and Circumstance."

Mystery explained? Why women live longer Since I started studying biology/neuroscience I have always been puzzled by the fact that no one has yet been able to explain why we age. This question may not have a simple answer. Perhaps it is one of those questions (like "what is life?") that will never really be answered, but rather re-formulated. My own conclusion based on what I have read until now is that many different factors are involved in aging, including but not limited to: 1) buildup of toxic materials in the body from the environment as well as waste from your own body and 2) damage to DNA. One related mystery is why women live longer than men? What is the cause of this unfair order? Until I read an article in Scientific American I always assumed that guys simply do more stupid things that sometimes kill us... The next explanation that comes to mind is that maybe our lives are just tougher, after all we always did all the difficult things while the women merely sits in their chairs, gossiping, problem solved, right?

Apparently not. It turns out that guys stupid behavior cannot account for the difference, and the latter explanation also fails because guess what, girls have been working to. Also, in the western world today men and women do pretty much the same things, and still we die earlier. Why? The article in Scientific American suggests that the reason we die and the reason women live longer is that our self-repair mechanisms breaks down and that women's repair mechanism lasts longer and are more effective than men's. It is as if, after a certain number of decades, the body says that this body is now so crappy that it is no longer worth fixing, you will now be a burden for others so I will not repair you any longer. Why would women have better repair? Because they give birth, and giving birth can be traumatic for many parts of the body. In order to recover from childbirth women need very effective repair mechanisms and as a side-effect of that, they also live longer...

In a previous article I mentioned how social media makes you feel good, as its part of socializing , engaging with other opinions, hearing good things about a status or a link you posted actually increases the hormone of happiness and satisfaction called "Dopamine" a feel good chemical in the body . In a recent study conducted to 18-20 year old students asking them to stay off online media (Unplugged) for 2 to 4 days, eventually on day 3 they started showing some drawbacks similar to drug addiction, later on they began sneaking to the restrooms trying to check out their status ... and timelines! Going without media meant, in their world going without their friends and family. One student wrote that texting and instant messaging friends gives a feeling of comfort: "When I did not have those two luxuries, I felt quite alone and secluded from my life! " By that behaviors stated to change, during meals, meetings, in bed, first thing in the morning ... Where quality face-to-face meeting took another shape of Skype meetings, face time via mobiles started to replace many of the well known form of personal interaction and you end up facing the laptop or your mobile all day long & all night long . With the media and different tools and application expanding , we officially will lose our human natural sense of belonging, live in silos

and passively removing ourselves from the Social Map, and this is the real serious! some worse cases are being treated in professional centers in Asia, rest of mild usage to social media try to monitor and time limit their access to 2-3 times a day, teens and under 26 year olds are more likely to be active during their break hours (bed time, morning time, waiting times ...restrooms :/ they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mind to be interrupted by a notification either, Unlike the above 30â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s are more distracted by the same during work or their resting time. 56% donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mind checking their Facebook once a day. 32% would actually check out a website or a link while having a meal. 72% check their Twitter every other hour or whenever mentioned. 47% of Twitter users mainly share news & links to latest news. Please introduce yourself to our readers? My name is Lina Fouad Alsaleh. I am a Kuwaiti, who studied communication arts from Boston U.S.A, and I have been working in Kuwait since 1992.

Tell us about your education? I finished high school in Kuwait then decided to study abroad. The first 6 months were very difficult but then I got into their lifestyle and really enjoyed every moment in the States with college and people and learnt how to depend on myself.

What does your role as a Special Projects Manager entail? Project Manager is responsible for everything that is required to make the project a success whether directly or indirectly. We as project managers have a direct responsibility for the activities of all project participants, project tasks, and deliverables.

What were your previous work experiences? I worked in several places as a Media & Marketing Supervisor such as KPC, Al Masaleh Real estate, and Real estate bank.

What are your hobbies? I don’t have a specific hobby but I like adventure and experiencing new activities, however I enjoy all kinds of sports and reading.

Are you an early bird or night owl? Nice question. Obviously on week days, I prefer to be an early and active bird,

on weekends I don’t mind being a night owl.We all deserve some quality time on weekend with our friends.

What is the best birthday present you ever received? I don’t know, but on my birthday receiving a phone call from my parents is worth more than every gift I have ever got.

What do you like most about your job? Honestly, I like the whole team from all department and our management department. I learned a lots from them, in terms of their strategies and future plans. We all work as a family which is the number one success in my job.

Who or what are your influences? A person who had an influence on my life... You see there is always a time in one’s life when a hero comes along. Somebody who has inspired me and helped me with understanding what life is about. My number one hero is my father.

Can you share any of your childhood memories? I have a lot of childhood memories growing up. I remember being just 5 old living in Shaab area and literally playing outdoors just about every day. Running, riding bikes, playing football in the garden with my brother. The only time I can remember watching TV was Donnie & Marie Osmond every Thursday.

What is your favourite gadget? I have an iPhone and a Blackberry. Both are good for emails. However, iPhone has a better camera and faster internet. They both have their pros & cons but overall I’d say they are my favourite gadgets.

What kind of music do you listen? I feel the kind of music you listen to should depend on your mood and occasion. If you are too tired you should listen to music which would relax you. If you are sad you should listen to some nice romantic music. Over all I love music it gives me energy.

Something you never forget to do before going to bed? I would write a simple list of things that need to be picked up or done the next day and make sure the house is cleaned and shinny.

Something you cannot leave the house without? Wallet, keys, my purse, dettol wipes and a hoodie. If I go to the mall I get cold pretty easily.

What is your criteria for choosing friends? They say you can judge a person by the friends he keeps and I think this is true on several levels. But many life coaches know that the friends you have also shape who you are. You spend a lot of time with your friends and you look to them for approval and support. So their influence can be large. Quran's criteria that I like: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Choose the right friends because the wrong selection can destroy your entire life.â&#x20AC;?

Tell us of your professional achievements? My greatest achievement is making a positive impact on others lives and seeing where their choices take them.

How important is Social Media as a marketing tool these days? Social media has become a part of daily life for many internet users. Social media is primarily an avenue for personal communications between individuals. However, many Social Media sites have evolved and people have found ways to use them for business purposes as well. Such as - Social book making, facebook, twitter, blogs, wikes and media sharing sites.

What are your future plans or goals? My long term goals involves growing with a company where I can continue

to learn, take on additional responsibilities and contribute as much of value as I can.

Your message for aspiring students in PR and Marketing? You should always manage your time, this to me is number one. In order to be a good PR & Marketing employee you have to exhibits promptness, good attendance, efficiency, attention to details and is presentable. Whether working with public or interacting with co-workers on amicable demeanour is desirable. No one wants to deal with someone who is rude, defensive or otherwise obnoxious.

Finally in the last few km Berkel found the extra speed and pulled away from Johnsen and got a good lead very late in the race and took home his second consecutive title at KMD Challenge Copenhagen despite a four-minute penalty on the bike. Finish time: 8:11:15 (swim 48:24, bike 4:33:18, run 2:46:16). "I'm over the moon to defend my title because I've never done that before. I love this beautiful city of Copenhagen and the crowd was amazing again this year. Jimmy made me work hard today, I was grinding my teeth towards the and was going as hard as I could," the happy two time winner Tim Berkel said after the race. A four-minute time penalty for drafting meant a frustrated Berkel was going hard on the run. "I was a little disappointed by the penalty. I felt good on the bike and Bastie and I rode away towards the end so the penalty was very frustrating. After I served I started running angry and ran a ridiculous pace and had to calm myself down and settle in at a slower pace. I had Jimmy and Dejan breathing down my neck, so I got my nutrition and water in and I think Jimmy had worked hard to catch me. COPENHAGEN, Denmark â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Tim Berkel (AUS) has reclaimed his title at KMD Challenge Copenhagen in a race that was closely fought until the final few metres. The final 8 kilometres on the run was shoulder to shoulder as defending champion Tim Berkel and home town favorite Jimmy Johnsen of Denmark battled it out for a close and very exciting finish of the 3,8 km swim, 180 km bike and 42,2 km run that had over 100,000 spectators on the edge of there seats in downtown Copenhagen.

The women's race was much less close as last year's winner Rebekah Keat from Australia hammered the course like it was 2010 and finished off with a 3:05:02 marathon to reclaim her title with a blistering 8:52:42 finish. It was her fifth iron distance race under nine hours, two of them here in Copenhagen. "I tried to focus on having a solid swim and not having to work too hard on the bike. I wanted to try to get my run legs back in this race and run around the three hours that is my level so that was great. Each lap the crowd just got bigger on the run, the second lap was good, third amazing and fourth incredible, I have never seen a crowd this big and it was fantastic today," said Keat. "Despite my big lead late in the run I'm not the type that's backing off, it's not in me, and I always run as hard as I can. I wasn't happy with my last two 3:13'ish marathons, so I wanted to show I could run fast. I'm happy about my marathon performance today but would love to crack three hours again." Send Your Kids Back to School with a Smile If it wasn’t for seeing an end in sight to the insane temperatures we’ve been seeing in Kuwait this summer, we’d be almost sad that summer is coming to a close. Summer is a fun time for everyone. The kids- whether they’re in first grade or high school- love the break from school, and parents, although we deny it at times, love having the opportunity to spend more time with their kids. Nevertheless, summer has to end at some point, and a lot has to be done to make sure the kids start the new school year with everything they need and as smoothly as possible. New clothes for school, a never-ending shopping list of school supplies, new lunchboxes and backpacks, general checkups and physicals are all things that have to be taken care of before your kids embark on this next chapter of their childhood, but what about their dental care? Is a dental checkup on your child’s back-to-school list? If not, it should be. Visiting the dentist is a vital part of maintaining overall health. Going to the dentist as a child is incredibly important because it sets the stage for lifelong dental health, which is a huge component of healthy living.

Dr. Nazia Nausheen It’s this time of the year that once they have left home in the morning, most kids won’t come back home until mid-afternoon, some even later if they stay for after-school-care. Let’s face it, even if we asked, or forced them to include a toothbrush set into their lunch pack, there is going to be only a small chance our children will actually use it. Time pressure, peer pressure – brushing teeth after school lunch is just not cool. So how are we to maintain their dental health while they are away from home?

Here are some tips: Eat before leaving, and then brush well. Let’s not make our kids’ teeth the victims of our multi-tasking, ever moving bad habits. Eating breakfast in the car or bus on the way to school may seem to save time, but can become a costly savings on the expense of our dental health. Teeth are best be brushed after each meal, but at least the two main meal times, morning and evening, should be observed. Besides taking good care of your teeth, having breakfast unhurried and as an enjoyable part of the day serves more purposes than preserving our teeth: It is also good to start the day in the company of our family and friends, or next to a good book, and promotes general well-being by allowing our body to digest without hurry the food we just ate. Water, water and more water. As alluring as soft drinks and juices may be, reserve them for at-home pleasure. Most contain citric acid, which, like any acid will “eat through” surfaces it comes in contact with, and often large amounts of sugar, which are equally bad for our

teeth. Water, on the other hand, will not only NOT bring these substances into our children’s mouth, but help flush away larger left over debris and extra sugars from lunch. Avoid an over abundance of starchy snacks like cookies and chips. Like soft drinks, their nutritional value is minimal, and the damage starch-turned-sugar over the duration of the afternoon can do is really not worth the short enjoyment at lunch time. As with sweetened drinks, best reserve for dessert at home. Provide tooth friendly healthy snacks for toddlers and day-care children. Younger children need to eat more often during the day to keep their energy level up. If your child is at a day care center, you can still protect their teeth by following the above mentioned tips, and then offer fruit, whole grain foods and snacks with natural fibers or nuts. No, I am not proposing you become a “health nut” or have to eat all organic, just think “tooth friendly”. Sweet potatoes are complex carbohydrates which means they digest more slowly than white potatoes and therefore will not cause your blood sugar to spike. Sweet potatoes are virtually fat-free, cholesterol-free and very low in sodium. One cup (200 grams) of cooked sweet potatoes has 180 calories. Just two thirds of a cup of sweet potatoes provides 100% of the USRDA for Vitamin E, without the unwanted fat. Sweet potatoes provide many other essential nutrients including Vitamin B6, potassium and iron. Sweet potatoes are a good source of dietary fiber which helps to promote a healthy digestive tract. Sweet potatoes have more fiber than oatmeal. Many people use the terms sweet potato and yam interchangeably. However, they are different vegetables and sweet potatoes are much more nutritious. Sweet potatoes are an excellent source of Vitamin A (beta carotene) and Vitamin C. These powerful antioxidants have healing properties that have been

known to play a role in reducing inflammation and restoring cells. These antioxidants can also help conditions such as arthritis, asthma and diabetes, as well as aid to prevent conditions such as emphysema, heart disease and even colon cancer.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) ranked the sweet potato number one in nutrition of all vegetables. "Points were given for content of dietary fiber, naturally occurring sugars and complex carbohydrates, protein, vitamins A and C, iron and calcium. Points were deducted for fat content (especially saturated fat), sodium, cholesterol, added refined sugars and caffeine. The higher the score, the more nutritious the food." Baked sweet potato was awarded a score of 184 points, while the next nearest vegetable (baked potato) received only 83 points. Sweet potatoes are also a good source of manganese, copper, dietary fiber, Vitamin B6, potassium and iron. The following nutritional facts are for one large sweet potato (200g) baked in skin without salt.

It's best to cook sweet potatoes whole if possible because most of their nutrients are near the skins. The skins are very easy to remove after they have been cooked. You can top baked sweet potatoes with butter and salt, or sugar and cinnamon if you prefer.

SELECTING & STORING SWEET POTATOES Choose sweet potatoes that are without cracks or soft spots. They should be firm to the touch. The sweet potato has yellow or orange flesh inside, but its thin skin can be yellow, orange, red, brown, white or even purple. Store sweet potatoes in a cool, dry, dark place. They should keep fresh for about a week. Don't place them in the refrigerator but rather in a well-ventilated but cool cupboard.

Giving Medicine to Your Toddler The hassle of giving medicine to your toddler sometimes seems worse than his illness. Here are some tips on handling this struggle. Here are some tips that creative parents have shared concerning their successful negotiations with reluctant medicine takers. Most medicines come in various flavors and are made by various manufacturers. If your child requires a certain generic type of medicine, try out different brands to find the one that's most palatable for your kid. Remember that brand name and ask for the same one in the future. Generally, it's not recommended to put medicines in a glass of juice or milk unless this method is approved by your doctor. Use a graduated syringe rather than a spoon to measure appropriate doses. The syringe must be graduated in cc's or ml's. Five cc's or ml's equals one teaspoon. When you have more than one child, try the following trick. Your twoyear-old will not want to be left out of anything good. Pass a spoonful of medicine around to the other kids and have them pretend to drink it, after which they must give an approving yum-yum sign. Your toddler will not want to miss out on the "goodies." Some kids are better pill takers than liquid swallowers. Some medicines come in better-tasting chewable forms, even for the two-year-old. If your child simply won't swallow an unpalatable liquid,

ask for the medication in capsule or pill form, crunch it up in a spoon, adding a little of camouflaging with his favorite food. Play imaginative medicine-taking games like the following: The spoonful of medicine flies like a plane and lands in baby's open mouth. Run and biteâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;toddler takes a short run and does a quick "pit stop" to take his spoonful of medicine. Babies often "forget" that they're really taking medicine if it is given throughout part of a play activity. Occasionally, bribery is warranted, like the Mary Poppins technique of "A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down." Use a piece of sugarless candy or a nutritious cookie. The use of hand puppets should also entice the reluctant medicine taker. Pretend to give the medicine to the open mouth of the hand puppet, or get the puppet to ask your baby to take his medicine. Most two-year-olds can't be fooled with this, but they like to play the game in any case. As you are marketing the medicine, make sure to give affirming prompts to your child like "Medicine is good for baby." When all else fails, obtain the medicine in pill form, crush, and make a paste out of the pill. With your fingertip full of the medicine paste, place a little amount at a time on the inside of your toddler's cheek. This month, I will be discussing Public Relations (PR) and its importance in marketing. Public Relations activities aim to cultivate a strong and positive image of the organization to the public and to its stakeholders. Similar to effective advertising and promotions, effective public relations often depends on designing and implementing a well-designed public relations plan. The plan often includes description of what you want to convey and to whom, how you plan to convey it, who will be responsible to convey it and by when, and how much money is budgeted to fund these activities. Similar to advertising and promotions, a media plan and calendar can be very useful, which specifies what media methods to be used and when. Most companies or organization have a dedicated department to handle such activities. The main goal of a public relations department is to enhance a companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s reputation. Staff that work in public relations, or as it is commonly known, PR, are skilled publicists. They are able to present a company or individual to the world in the best light. The role of a public relations department can be seen as a reputation protector. The business world of today is extremely competitive. Companies need to have an edge that makes them stand out from the crowd, something that makes them more appealing and interesting to both the public and the media.

The Museum of London

The Museum of London documents the history of London from the Prehistoric to the present day. It is part of the striking Barbican complex and very close to Barbican Centre. John Miller

Barbican Centre is a big complex of buildings that was created in the 1960s and 70s on the place where the German bombings caused much damage to London during the War. The impressive Barbican Centre is also close to St Paul’s Cathedral, (about five minutes walk), and overlooks the remains of the Roman City wall. This part of London is one of the oldest and now known as: - The City, it houses the financial district with all its banks, stock exchanges and other financial institutes. The Museum of London is primarily concerned with the social history of London and its inhabitants during the period from Prehistoric to present. The Museum of London opened in 1976 and holds a large number of important collections that were previously located in Kensington Palace.. The Architects who designed and build the Museum of London were Philip Powell and Hidalgo Moya and they used an innovative approach to the project. One of these remarkable approaches was that there was only one route through the museum, starting in the prehistoric section and following the galleries until the visitors ended up in the present days. The museum comprises a series of chronological galleries containing original artifacts, models, pictures and diagrams, with a strong emphasis on archaeological discoveries, the built city, urban development and London's social and cultural life, with interactive displays and activities for all ages.

London Wall Just outside The Museum of London you can also see some remains of the Roman City Wall, better known as “the London Wall” In 2008 the Museum of London opened a refurbished gallery which contains the historical period from the English Civil War until the Great Fire of London in 1666. This gallery is called War, Plague and Fire The museum had a £20million redevelopment which was completed in May 2010. This is its biggest investment since opening in 1976.

The re-design, by London-based architects Wilkinson Eyre, tell the story of London and Londoners from the Great Fire of 1666 to the present day. The transformation includes four new galleries. The new City Gallery features large street level windows along London Wall and provides an illuminated showcase for the Lord Mayor's State Coach, which takes to the streets each November for the Lord Mayor.

The Galleries of Modern London The Galleries of Modern London increase the museum's exhibition space by 25 percent and enable the display of 7,000 objects. Star exhibits include a reconstruction of Georgian and Victorian Pleasure gardens, the foreboding wooden interior of the Wellclose debtors prison cell, an art deco lift from Selfridges department store and the puppet stars of BBC children's TV Andy Pandy and Bill and Ben

The "Expanding City" gallery covers the period 1660s to 1850. "People's City" addresses 1850 to 1940s including a Victorian walk with displays of shops and public buildings, and sections on the West End, Suffragettes, World War I and World War II, and everyday life. There is much more to see at the Museum of London and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s certainly worth a visit.

Homemade Falafel

A recent lunch meeting with a lovely friend reminded me how much I love falafel, so naturally I had to come home and make far too many falafel patties. This recipe works just as well for deep-fried falafel balls and half the chick peas can be swapped for fava beans for a more authentic flavor. Thank you, Middle East, for this favorite savory staple!

Miss-ology INGREDIENTS:

2 cups dried chick peas 1/2 medium onion 2 cloves garlic 1 Tbsp. tahini 3-4 sprigs of fresh cilantro

1/2 tsp. cumin 1/4 tsp. coriander 1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper 1 Tbsp. olive oil 1 tsp. baking soda Additional olive oil for pan frying

Rinse chick peas and cover with water. Soak overnight. Cook soaked chick peas in boiling water for 5-10 minutes. Roughly chop onion, garlic and cilantro. Add chick peas, onion, garlic, tahini and cilantro to a food processor and pulse 10-20 times or until mixture just begins to become paste-like (see below). Stir in cumin, coriander, crushed red pepper, 1 Tbsp. olive oil and baking soda. Form mixture into patties and cook over medium heat in a pan lightly coated with olive oil until deep brown on all sides.

One video short documents a woman’s search for her lost husband – one of the nations’ 1 million addicted to heroine, while a pregnant woman navigates the options for healthcare and birth control – without a functioning maternity clinic nearby. “The Fruit of Our Labor” details Afghans’ inexorable struggle to survive: from the constant quest for water for themselves and for their fields, to the humble hawking of fruit from urban pushcarts. As an organization that trains Afghan documentary filmmakers, Community Supported Film (CSFilm) works for an Afghanistan that is not abandoned and left to survive another humanitarian crisis. CSFilm’s 10-day, online airing of “The Fruit of Our Labor” on the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and the invasion of Afghanistan seeks to raise awareness worldwide of the plight of Afghans and instigate a conversation about the immediate and long-term future of Afghanistan.

The Fruit of Our Labor “The Fruit of Our Labor” has been shown at the US Institute of Peace in Washington, DC; the World Bank in Kabul, Afghanistan; the Asia Society in New York City; The Woods Hole Film Festival; Docutah Film Festival (October 12-17, 2011); Harvard, Tufts, Carnegie Mellon, and Boston Universities; and at many more screenings during a 19-city tour.

Community Supported Film CSFilm trains local women and men in documentary filmmaking with a focus on their community’s social and economic development issues. Their stories, rooted in realities often unrepresented in the media, are used to influence local and international perspectives on sustainable paths to a more peaceful and equitable world. In the interest of amplifying the voices and expertise of Afghans, Community Supported Film conducted an intensive five-week training of 10 Afghans in documentary production in the fall of 2010. The resulting films are gathered in the collection, “The Fruit of Our Labor,” and can be seen at csfilm.org.

Michael Sheridan Executive Producer/Trainer for “The Fruit of Our Labor” Director of Community Supported Film Michael Sheridan has been making documentary and experimental films for nearly 20 years about people in poor and developing communities challenging the status quo and working to improve their lives. Michael has taught filmmaking for 15 years at the community and university level. He served as Senior Fulbright Scholar in Indonesia. In 2009, he began work on a documentary, Brewing Tea in a Kettle of War, about Afghan villagers’ experiences of receiving unsolicited help from outsiders. To make this film, Michael began teaching Afghans documentary filmmaking. The success of this work inspired the creation of Community Supported Film.
