The Service, The Music, The Food makes Paul Stephen I have been hearing tons of great things about the La Rouge Restaurant so I decided to finally go try it last night. La Rouge is located on the 4th floor of The Convention Centre and Royal Suites Hotel at the Free Trade Zone. I decided to go there for dinner as it is my favorite meal of the day.

Where image and appetites collide, Rouge guarantees a truly unique dining experience. It is a contemporary and modern approach to French and International cuisine. We were very warmly welcomed by the reception staff and already began to feel special. Starting from the entrance, we were immersed in reminiscence and elegance of its unique decor. The bar at the entrance was very impressive and one of the best I have come across in Kuwait. We were soon seated at the table of our choice which was near the centre of the room as I always prefer to have a better glance of the place. The waiter was very pleasant and quick to bring a bottle of water to our table. We were given the choice to either go for a set menu or to order from the standard menu. We opted for the set menu and soon were handed over with the menu which

For the Appetizer we had the Caesar Salad and the Main Course was my favorite Jumbo Shrimps and Beef Fillet served with Sautéed Vegetables and rice. We ordered our soft drinks and were having a closer look at the place. It was not very crowded, making it just the kind of place we look for to escape from the usual rush in other places in Kuwait. It seemed to me like a perfect hide out for lovers of candle light romance dinner. We soon felt like being in the most romantic restaurant in Kuwait. It was not too late that we were served with our Appetizers. It was the most appealing of Caesar Salads we ever had. We just ate the best chicken caesar salad of our life. Seriously, It was amazing. Moist, white meat chicken, crisp, cold, fresh romaine, perfect dressing, fresh black pepper. This made us more eagerly await for our main

The wait was over and we witnessed a large plate of our main course Vegetables and rice. The shrimps were really jumbo. We joyously noted their size, pleasantly surprised. Most restaurants seem to lie by offering jumbo shrimp or prawns and delivering small, generic substitutes. They were cooked perfectly and snappy. The beef was well done as per our instructions and we really enjoyed the Sautéed vegetables. Very de-

Concept of Pay Yourself First What is the concept of pay yourself first? How do you apply the concept of pay yourself first? When you read investment books, you will see the concept of pay yourself first. When you read how the poor people get rich, you will read about the concept of pay yourself first. This concept of pay yourself first is not a new concept. The Richest Man in Babylon by George Clason mentioned this concept of pay yourself first. Since The Richest Man in Babylon was written about 90 years ago, you would think that everyone know about it. However, most people do not pay attention to it. They still prefer to pay others, and not applying the concept of pay yourself first.

scheng1

How do you apply the concept of pay yourself first? Pay yourself first: change your thinking If you want to buy a can of soft drinks, you are spending money. Instead of thinking that it is just a small amount of money, you should consider that you are paying the manufacturer of the soft drinks. When you pay the manufacturer of the soft drinks, you are making him rich.

Why should you make him rich and make yourself poor? Every time you want to spend money, you should think about this question. Why should you let anyone get rich and make yourself poorer? The minute you pay a penny to another person, he is one penny richer and you are one penny poorer. That is the way you apply the concept of pay yourself first. You must make yourself rich and not make others who are richer than you to get even richer.

Pay yourself first: salary When your boss pays you salary, the natural thing is to think of ways to spend it. However, that defies the concept of pay yourself first. You must stake the first claim on the money. You must keep the bulk of the money for yourself. The dollar that you spend does not belong to you anymore. That is why never allow the money to enrich others. You can open another bank account so that you pay yourself first. You can arrange for an automatic transfer so that you can pay yourself first.

Pay yourself first: money can grow You can think of money as a parent. A parent can give birth to many children. The children will grow up and give birth to grandchildren. The same concept applies to money. A dollar can grow to become a dollar and five cents. The five cents is the children of the dollar. You can reinvest the five cents, so that you can get more money. If you spend the dollar, you are never going to get the children of money. You will not see the children of money give birth to the grandchildren of money. That is why getting rich starts from learning the concept of pay yourself first. Are you applying the concept of pay yourself first? Do you want to make others rich? Do you want to make yourself rich?

Just one can of soda a day could make teens behave more aggressively Do carbonated soft drinks make teens more violent? Just one can of soda a day is linked to more aggressive behavior by teenagers, claim researchers. Via Daily Mail A new study found youngsters were significantly more likely to be violent and carry weapons if they regularly consumed fizzy soft drinks. The study showed those having more than five cans of non-diet carbonated drinks a week were more likely to get involved in violent assaults. The US researchers are uncertain if the link is causal, but have not ruled this out. It is possible that unknown factors causing aggression in youngsters also influence their dietary habits – which is why they opt for fizzy drinks – but previous research suggests poor nutrition may be a cause of antisocial behavior. The latest findings, reported online in the journal Injury Prevention, come from a survey of 1,878 teenagers aged 14 to 18 from 22 state schools in Boston. They were asked how many cans of non-diet fizzy soft drinks they had consumed over the past week. Up to four cans was considered ‘low’, and five or more was classified as ‘high’. Just under one in three pupils fell into the ‘high’ category, some drinking more than two or three cans a day. The scientists then investigated any potential links to violent behavior. Youngsters were asked if they had been violent towards their peers, a brother or sister, or a partner, and whether they had carried a gun or knife in the past year. Overall, frequent soft drink consumption was associated with a 9 per cent to 15 per cent increased likelihood of engaging in aggressive behavior. Violence and weapon-carrying was in any event common among the teenagers, who largely represented ethnic minorities from poor backgrounds. Of the group, 50 per cent were black or multi-racial, 33 per cent Hispanic, 9 per cent white and 8 per cent Asian. However, rates of violent behaviour increased in a ‘dose response’ as students consumed more fizzy drinks, the researchers found. Just over 23 per cent of teenagers drinking one or no cans a week had carried a gun or knife, rising to just under 43 per cent of those drinking 14 or more cans. For the same increase in fizzy drink consumption, the proportion of those who

had shown violence to a dating partner rose from 15 per cent to 27 per cent. Rates of violence towards peers rose from 35 per cent to more than 58 per cent, and towards siblings from 25 per cent to more than 43 per cent. The researchers, led by Dr Sara Solnick from the University of Vermont, said ‘There was a significant and strong association between soft drinks and violence. ‘There may be a direct cause-and-effect relationship, perhaps due to the sugar or caffeine content of soft drinks, or there may be other factors, unaccounted for in our analyses, that cause both high soft drink consumption and aggression.’ Previous research in the UK and the Netherlands found youngsters living on junk food were more likely to break the law, but giving vitamin and mineral supplements to convicted prisoners could cut violence in jails by up to 47 per cent. It is thought poor nutrition could be a trigger for antisocial behaviour, probably because it leads to low levels of brain chemicals affecting mood and increasing aggression. British expert Prof Peter Kinderman, a clinical psychologist at the University of Liverpool, criticised the study, saying there were many influences on the teenagers’ behavior. He said ‘The causes of violence in young people are complicated and this work is presenting an overly simplistic interpretation of the role of ’soft’ drinks. There are a large number of known risk factors that would contribute to violent behaviour that have nothing to do with the consumption of these drinks. ‘We know, in many areas of human behaviour that correlation does not imply causation. We also know that poor diet is associated with a range of negative health and social outcomes. This study is unsurprising. ‘But, more importantly, it fails to address ‘third-variable’ issues that could explain the findings – kids exposed to different social, parental or educational backgrounds might therefore have different diets and different attitudes to aggression, without any direct causal link.’ Dr Seena Fazel, senior lecturer at Oxford University of Oxford, said ‘A trial of an intervention to reduce high soft drink consumption may be worth considering in high risk populations, and may lead to broader health benefits beyond reducing aggression.’

A C O E M P LI K M E A N T T O T W O H Do you struggle with accepting praise? Here’s how to do it graciously. How did you respond last time someone said something nice about your shoes, or your latest accomplishment at work? Probably, “Oh, these beat-up old things?”and “Thanks, but Anne did all the real work.” Why is it that we so often baulk at praise? “I was brought up to believe you could get a swelled head if you accepted a compliment,” says etiquette expert Louise Fox. This is probably because we’re worried about being perceived as being “full of ourselves. However, there is a genuine benefit to being able to embrace kind words. One US study found that, among 185 women, those most insecure about their bodies got a self-esteem boost from a compliment about their personality or appearance. You’d think we women would be better at receiving compliments, considering how often we exchange them. “It’s almost a barrage of compliments between females,” says Peter Wogan, an associate professor of anthropology at Willamette University in Oregon. For a 2006 study, Wogan observed 270 compliments among students, and found that most given to women were about appearance. Want to get better at accepting compliments? Try these tips:

Diane Peters KEEP IT SIMPLE For a straightforward compliment about your appearance, your work or your fantastic lamb roast, a simple “thank you” will do. If your dress was salerack special or the meal you cooked was overdone, resist going into those details.

JUST ACCEPT IT If you only respond to compliments by offering one of your own, people may question your sincerity.

DON’T PUT YOURSELF DOWN If a compliment seems to be also asking for information, thank the giver and share the recipe for your delicious biscuits, or explain how you uploaded those unique graphics-but never belittle yourself in the process.

DON’T POOH-POOH THE COMPLIMENT Remember: A brush-off is rude. “When you reject a compliment,”says Fox, “you’re rejecting the opinion of that person.”

PERFECT YOUR BACKHAND Dealing with a compliment that comes with a dig can be tricky. Consider these: “You look so good now that you’ve lost all that baby weight!”Or “I really love your haircut; it’s so much nicer than the last one!” Fox suggests responding with something like; “I’m not sure how to respond to that,”or “I’m not comfortable with that.”This neatly acknowledges the backhanded nature of the remark, and puts the ball squarely back in the other person’s court. When you get better at the complimenting dance, it helps you get along with other, and feel great in the process. Says Fox: “A sincere compliment is a gift. Don’t worry about motives; just accept it.”

WORDS OF PRAISE

Even giving good compliments can require a deft hand. Here are a few pointers: BE SPECIFIC “That colour looks amazing on you,” or “You really know how to put together a dinner party where everyone feels relaxed,” will have more resonance than too-general comments. AVOID BODY-RELATED OBSERVATIONS ABOUT THE OPPOSITE SEX In these situations, compliments can sometimes sound like flirting, say Wogan. But compliments to a co-worker on a great job or to a neighbor for their fantastic landscaping efforts are safe bets. FOCUS ON RESULTS Compliments about weight loss may make people self-conscious and further reinforce the idea that we look good only when we’re thin (or make them feel bad because you’re bringing attention to how much they weighed before). Instead, focus your comments on a flattering dress, healthy complexion or inspiring commitment to a new sport.

WAKE UP FRESH AND ENERGETIC If you wake up fresh and energetic in the morning, you lay a solid foundation for the day ahead. Here I will lay down some very useful and effective tips to wake up fresh in the morning and start the day energetically. First and foremost, the best thing is to get a sound and comfortable nights sleep to have great energy levels in the morning, but there are other energy boosters to rejuvenate you in the morning. Studies show the activities you do immediately after waking up can make you feel your best for the rest of the day. Rjs Kochhar

TIPS TO WAKE UP FRESH AND ENERGETIC IN THE MORNING: CHECK YOUR WATCH SNOOZE: Always set the watch alarm for the time that you actually want to get up. Many people are in a habit of switching off the snooze when it rings and again go off to sleep. This way you are depriving your body of comfortable and sound sleep and would actually get up more tired than before because your brain subconsciously gets accustomed to the fact that once you hit the alarm button it will go off again, this way you are never at peace and you are unable to get that extra sleep peacefully that you long for.

GET SOME SUN SHINE: After leaving your bed it’s a good idea to head to your balcony or terrace to get some good sun shine this will make you feel more fresh, awake and alert and give you energy and rejuvenate your body. Studies show that daylight refreshes the body clock and increases the brains level of serotonin, a chemical which is responsible for boosting your mood.

WATER THE MAGIC DRINK: Body to function properly needs water. Drinking water the first thing after waking up is a great idea, because it helps make up for the loss of body fluids in the night and leaves you feeling hydrated. To change the taste you can often add fresh lime juice to water which is again very refreshing.

BRIGHTEN UP YOUR MOOD WITH BRIGHT COLOURS: Bright colours brighten up your mood this is what research suggests. Try to see bright colours first thing when you wake up, this habit of yours would make you wake up fresh and pep up your energy levels. So now onwards get all your bed sheets, pillow covers, curtains etc in nice bright colours and get your room done up in bright colours. When you wake up amidst bright colours, you are bound to start your day fresh and energetic. Keep a nice and bright bouquet of flowers in your bed room looking at these bright flowers first thing in the morning when you wake up will boost your mood and energy levels.

PLAN YOUR DAY: Take out few minutes to plan out your day after you wake up. This helps you to think positively to plan your day and you will be in a better position both mentally and physically to face the day ahead.

DISCUSS YOUR VIEWS: What do you have to say about waking up fresh and energetic? How did you find the above tips? What are your tips and ideas to start the day fresh and energetic with fire in your belly?

Table salt can boost capacity of hard disks by six times Current hard disk manufacturing technology could soon reach its limits. Singapore scientists have developed a surprising use for ordinary table salt that they say could help deal with the increasingly quantities of data that companies and individuals are creating and storing. Their new manufacturing process, involving simple sodium chloride, can boost the capacity of computer hard disks by six times. The discovery was made by Singapore’s national research institution the Agency for Science Technology and Research, in collaboration with the National University of Singapore and the Data Storage Institute. The agencies have “developed a process that can increase the data recording density of hard disks to 3.3 Terabits per square inch, six times the recording density of current models”, they said in a statement. The addition of sodium chloride to the manufacturing process meant the pattern of bits – units of information – on the surface of each magnetic disk was neater, allowing more to be crammed in.

The salt improved the resolution of the electron beam used to “print” the bits. “It can give you a very high contrast. We are now able to see fine lines that would normally be blurred out,” said Dr Joel Yang, the scientist who led the development. “Otherwise you can try your best to pattern these bits very closely but they will all end up being gigantic blurred out blobs.” According Dr. Yang, the new process could be commercialised by 2016, “when the current techniques run out of fuel and (hard drive manufacturers) need to find alternate methods” of increasing data storage space.

8 ways parents are making their kids fat Too many parents are making mistakes that make their children fat Baby fat looks cute, but can turn into a problem later in life. Chubby children often grow into fat adults, according to doctors and a new report from the prestigious Institute of Medicine describes in stark terms just what parents must do to safeguard kids from a lifetime of obesity and obesity-related health problems. But the report suggests that too many parents are making mistakes. Mistake: Allowing too much screen time

Mistake: Neglecting recreational opportunities

Like to park your kids in front of the TV? Bad move. Anything more than two hours is too much as far as screen time goes, particularly for kids two to five years of age, according to the report. This includes cell phone and computer screens as well as television. In addition to making kids sedentary, screen time means they’re exposed ro all sorts of advertisements for less-thanhealthful foods and beverages – a weighty-kid double whammy.

To help kids get the exercise they need to avoid packing on the pounds, parents should be sure to seek out kid-friendly recreational opportunities in the community – from parks and public pools to outdoor recreation areas.

Mistake: Letting kids set the menu Think you’re being “nice” by letting your kid eat what he/she wants – and how much? Maybe not if you care about their health. Parents should make sure kids know what’s healthy and what’s not and should ensure that kids have access to healthy fare. And don’t forget to teach portion control.

Mistake: Going overboard on strollers Strollers, car seats, high chairs and bouncer seats all keep kids safe. But using them excessively can also keep kids from getting the exercise they need – and reinforce the idea that it’s okay to be sedentary.

Mistake: Relying on the bottle Pediatricians have long said that breast is best for infants, and they’re right. If possible, moms should breast-feed their babies at least until they are six months old. Studies have shown that breast-fed babies face a lower risk for childhood obesity.

Mistake: Not tracking children’s growth From birth to age five, children should have regular check-ups in which the doctor charts their height and weight. A child who is gaining weight rapidly, or who has a BMI above the eighty-fifth percentile may be at increased risk for obesity later in life.

Mistake: Accepting low-activity child care Child-care providers – whether parents, teachers, or babysitters – should provide daily opportunities for kids to move around. What about the really little ones? The report says even infants need some “tummy time” to burn off calories and build muscles. Indoors or outdoors, there is always opportunity to be active – and kids need to know that.

Mistake: Letting kids stay up late Sleep is healthy, and parents should do what it takes to make sure their kids get good sleep – and enough of it. Babies under three months of age should get 10.5 to 18 hours a day. Infants – three to 12 months of age – need nine to 12 hours, with 30-minute two-hour naps one to four times a day. Toddlers – one to three years old – should get 12 to 14 hours a day, and kids three to five years old should get 11 to 13 hours a day.

How to Learn to Forgive Yourself and Others

Last night I curled up on the couch with a blanket and a coffee and watched a movie called Kite Runner. This film is set in Afghanistan and is about two best friends who end up parting ways due to the war and a terrible incident that occurs between them. Many years go by and finally one of the friends is presented with an opportunity to redeem himself and win his childhood companion’s forgiveness. The story that ensues is one of the most heartbreaking, honest and beautiful stories that I have ever had the pleasure of watching. I am not ashamed to admit that I cried my eyes out at the end of this one. One of the main themes in Kite Runner is forgiveness. Forgiving others for what they have done to you and forgiving yourself for mistakes you have made. Inspired by this touching story I decided to write a few thoughts about how you can learn the art of forgiveness. Giving forgiveness a chance

l

The guy who cut you off in traffic

Forgiveness is a tricky subject that is hard for many people to approach. I know that one of my family members is completely shut off to the idea of forgiveness, especially when the recipient is my father. Sometimes pain and hatred get in the way of more helpful solutions like forgiving and moving on.

l

A guy you got in a fight with

l

Yourself

If you feel like you might be one of those people who don’t “believe” in forgiveness I ask that you read on and see if any of these points hit home for you. I used to be like you. I found it extremely hard to forgive people who had hurt me. But my attitudes changed when I saw some concrete evidence that showed me that I would be happier if I gave forgiveness a chance.

This might seem silly but sometimes it is easier to forgive someone for a big thing like killing your friend in a car accident than it is the guy who deliberately cut you off in traffic. Why? Because you can see the former person’s remorse. You want to forgive them. You don’t want to forgive the person who doesn’t care a less whether you are happy or sad. You really don’t like that person. You might be right. Maybe we shouldn’t. All I am asking is for you to take a look inside and ask, “how forgiving am I really? Do I always forgive, or only some of the time?”

I ask that you give it a chance too.

How forgiving are you really? Many of you might think that you are already pretty forgiving people. I know a lot of my readers are extremely loving people who are excited about self-development and helping others. But are you that forgiving? Let’s see.

Why we should learn the art of forgiveness So why should we learn to forgive those who have done us wrong? Why should we give them a second chance? There are many philosophical answers to this question but I want to tell you one practical reason that you might not have thought of: it is ruining your life.

l

Your father

l

Your mother

l

A teacher that embarrassed you in school

A few years ago when I was in India listening to one of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s teachings he started talking about forgiveness. Now the Buddhist concept of forgiveness is very different to the Christian one. In Buddhism there is no God to pray to for forgiveness. There is just you and your mind and your relationship with other sentient beings. His Holiness started talking about how he thought it was kind of stupid to not forgive someone. My ears pricked up knowing that he would have something interesting to say about forgiveness after what had happened to his country.

l

Your political leaders

The analogy he gave was very illuminating. He talked about how you might be angry at

Here is a list of a few people you might have forgiven, and a few you might not have. Some of them have made some small mistakes, others have caused terrible harm. How many (if any) have you forgiven:

21

one of your enemies for something they did to you. You carry the anger around with you every day. You think of how horrible that person is and how you would love to get back at them for what they did. But while you are busy hating them hey have long forgotten about you and your issues. They are off enjoying life. They are moving on. But you are stuck. Stuck in a moment that happened long ago. And the only way for you to move on is to forgive them. I think this is one of the best approaches to take if you do not like the idea of forgiving someone. Do it for yourself. If you don’t forgive that person it is going to be you that suffers. They don’t care. They have moved on. But you will be stuck in an angry place for a long time to come. This is the main reason why we should learn the art of forgiveness; to give ourselves a second chance at happiness.

ritates you. Bring it to mind. Now think about them in 20 years time. Where will they be because of what they have done? Will they be happy and content or will they be alone, sad and bitter? Will their life turn out the way their parents might have hoped for them? Now think about them on their death bed. Will they have loving family around? Will they have regret for what they have done? Will the die peacefully? When you think about where you enemies are going to end up in 20 or 30 years time you often feel extremely sorry for them. You get the general sense that things aren’t going to work out so well and this makes you sad. As much as you hate them right now the basic goodness inside of you wants to forgive them for what they have done. Your heart begins to open up and it is hard to hold on to the anger. You want to forgive this person because you know they aren’t going to die smiling.

How to forgive yourself and others Now I want to give you a few strategies to help you learn how to forgive yourself and others. Not everything here is going to work for you. That’s fine. Just take what you think might work and apply it to your situation.

Understand that causes and conditions are at play When you look at a “bad” person you will first see all of their downfalls. You will see how nasty they are and how they don’t care about anyone but themselves. But what you don’t see is the fact that this all comes about due to causes and conditions. Take, for example, the young child who is sexually abused by his uncle. This boy has endured horrors that most of us could not imagine. He lives his life in fear and as a result of that incident he grows up to be a petty thief or a drug user. It seems a little easier to forgive someone for stealing the coins out of your car for drugs when you know they were molested as a child. Now I am not negating the importance of choice. I think everyone has a choice in life as to whether they take one path or another. But I fully believe that the choice is easier for some than it is for others. It might be a lot easier for me to be ethical and law-abiding that it is for someone who spent his childhood getting raped by his uncle. So the next time someone does something bad to you think “it is due to causes and conditions” and just forgive the person. You are still allowed to be angry at them and sad at the situation but let it go. Try and think about why that person is acting in that way and reassure yourself that it isn’t who they really are, or who they would like to be.

Think about compassion Have you ever heard the saying “what goes around comes around”? It is an excellent saying and it is an even better way to learn to forgive someone – have compassion for them. Think about your worst enemy for a moment. Picture their face and their voice. Now think about why you hate them so much. It might be something they did to you or it might just be something they stand for that ir-

Look on the positive side of life When you break up with a loved one you have two choices: stay angry and bitter or forgive and move on. There doesn’t seem to be an in between option. For a while anger seems to work; you need that to help yourself move forward. But after a while one needs to make the transition from anger to forgiveness. Making this transition is not always easy. One way to do it is to look at all the positive things that came out of the experience. This might seem a little airy fairy at the moment but it really does help. Not long ago Mrs. Daily Minder broke up with me (I know… crazy huh?). We had been together for six long years but due to some things going on in her life she decided that enough was enough. When it happened I went in to shock. I couldn’t understand how two people who were so in love and happy after all this time could just part ways. It was an extremely difficult period in my life. I did a lot of soul searching and a lot of crying. But after the initial pain wore off I started to make a lot of progress. I became stronger, more independent and much more balanced. I realized that happiness depended on me and no one else. Mrs. Daily Minder and I are back together now and happier (and healthier) than ever. Although the break up hurt like hell I am glad it happened. We needed to to grow up and to sort our relationship out for the long term. We are better people because it happened. But before we got back together I needed to forgive her for hurting me. If I couldn’t truly forgive her we could never work. The first two points in this article were big helpers in finding that forgiveness. In the end, however, it was seeing that the break up had made us stronger individuals and a better couple that helped me get there. By looking at the positives in the situation I was able to forgive her.

See things on a grand scale Have you ever sat outside at night time and just stared up into space? It is an interesting experience. Some people find it a little overwhelming because it makes you feel so insignificant. On the other hand, some people love it because it makes their problems seem so insignificant.

When you think about the whole of history and everything that has happened it makes forgiving someone seem rather tiny. Think about Ancient Greece and their empire falling, Hitler and the modern wars, the Atomic Bomb, a billion people in India, man going to space, global warming, all the people dying of starvation, the Soccer World Cup, etc. All of these huge events make forgiveness seem easy. If you try to look at the bigger picture and how insignificant your drama really is I think you will find forgiving someone less difficult. With everything that has happened and everything that is going to happen on our planet forgiving someone is really not that big of a deal.

Shift your perspective I remember being very little and telling my mother about how a boy at school had been mean to me. I said I hated this boy and I never wanted to go back to school again. She explained to me very gently that my side of the story wasn’t the only one and perhaps I needed to think about what this other boy was feeling and why said what he had said. It immediately occurred to me that she was right, this boy had been mean to me because I was mean to him. Whenever something bad happens it is important to try to shift your perspective from your side of the story to the other persons. This helps you get a better picture of what’s going on and allows you to make a more informed judgment. Most importantly, however, shifting your perspective allows you to forgive others for what they have done. You see the reason that we don’t forgive is because we believe that we are right and the other person is wrong. We want them to admit it and we never waver from our point of view because that would be tantamount to admitting guilt. But if you shift your perspective you see a different side to the story and you open yourself up to the very real possibility that no one was wrong, it was just a bad mistake. Then forgiveness can happen.

Be the bigger person It takes bravery to forgive someone. It takes an extremely brave, big person to forgive someone after they have done you wrong. Sometimes the best way to teach yourself to forgive is to just up and do it without really meaning it. This can open the way to more thoughtful and meaningful forgiveness later on. Let me tell you another story about when I was young. I had a friend over for a weekend play date and during a bike ride my “friend” had thrown a stick at my front wheel and sent me toppling over the handle bars. It must have looked hilarious from his perspective, me flipping over the bars on to my head, but for me it hurt and left me with a bleeding scalp and a lot of scratches. I marched back in to the house and went and found dad (mom was out) and tried to explain to him through my tears how this bastard of a friend had tried to kill me. Dad cleaned me up, gave me a hug and then told me to go back outside and play. No way. Not with him. I stormed off in to my room and closed the door. I wasn’t coming out until that kid had gone home. But that wasn’t going to happen for another day and a half

– his parents were away and we were babysitting him. After some time dad convinced me that the whole thing was probably and accident and that I needed to forgive him to make his stay pleasant for the both of us. And although I really didn’t want to forgive the little jerk I went outside and accepted his immediate apology. We were friends again. Sometimes you have to be the bigger person even if you don’t want to. This allows you to move on with your life and helps everyone involved in the situation. Try it, even if you don’t mean it.

Think about death Don’t be frightened about what I am about to say. It is a simple truth that everyone will have to face. You are going to die one day. Let that sink in for a moment. Don’t just read it, let is sink in. You – dead. Not someone else, you. One day you are going to die and when that day comes do you want to have any regrets? One of my favorite quotes of all time is this one: “My religion is not Buddhism. My religion is to live and die without regrets.” – Milarepa What about the other person who you didn’t forgive. Would you be happy if they died and you didn’t get a chance to forgive them? Would that weigh down on you? That person would be gone forever and you would never get the opportunity to fix it. The best way to learn how to forgive yourself and others is to realize that death is certain and the time of death is uncertain. If you were to die tomorrow, would you die with any regrets?

Conclusion In Kite Runner the main character goes in search of his childhood friend to apologize for what he did to him when they were little. He needs to forgive himself for the mistake he made but in order to do that he needs to seek the forgiveness of his friend. I won’t tell you what happens in the end of the movie but I will tell you that it makes you understand how important it is to learn forgiveness now. Waiting on this one is not a sure plan. You never know when it will be too late to learn the art of forgiveness.

Giving kids a chance P U S H Y O U R L I M I T S , TA K E Gulf for Good is registered with Dubai International Humanitarian City and is also a UK registered charity. The unique way of helping others is by organising exciting adventure challenges around the world inspiring people to do something unusual. Participants raise funds, which are then donated to handpicked charities in the region where the challenge is held. We had the opportunity to meet Brian Wilkie, The G4G Chairman during his recent visit to Kuwait and learnt more about his charity and their upcoming challenges.

Mohammad Altaf Would you like to briefly introduce your organization to our readers? We are unique in the world in the way that we are the only charity that orgainzes adventure challenges to raise money to help poor kids in the part of the world where the challenge takes place.

When was it established? We are about 10 years old. We were founded in Dubai in the year 2001.

Why did you think that such an organization was required? Helping becomes such a different feeling when you are not just helping by donating but being physically present for the cause and living with the people who you are trying to help. It basically changes people lives.

What are the objectives of Gulf For Good? We have four main objectives: 1. To bring together Gulf nationals and residents in a good cause. 2. To encourage people of all ages and backgrounds to push their own limits. 3. To show people the value and enjoyment of motivation, commitment and helping others. 4. To raise large sums for worthwile projects.

Who is the patron of this organization? Our patron is His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al Maktoum who is also the Chairman of the

Patricia Anderson Communications Manager

around the world THE CHALLENGE, HELP OTHERS Emirates airline.

How do you collect donations? We collect donations through challenges. We organise exciting adventure challenges around the world inspiring people to do something unusual. Participants raise funds, which are then donated to handpicked charities in the region where the challenge is held. We do not encourage direct donations. We do get donations from companies.

Sometimes in kind for things that we need in the office or provide things cheaper for the challenge. Dubai Duty Free sponsors us every years and some of our challenges in Dubai are sponsored by Fitneess First which is a chain of gyms in the Gulf.

How the funds are collected and issued? As I had mentioned that we do challenges to raise

funds. Our challenges include: hiking, cycling, kaiaki. We usually charge a registration fee to participate in these challenges whic covers our administration expenses and then they have to raise a certain amount of funds. From the funds raised, one third is spent to do the challenge which may include the travelling, accomodation and other expenses and rest goes to the charity for which the challenge is being done.

How do you fund the charities? We do not just give the fund to the charities. We ask them to submit us a project, we check it out and calculate the costs and we get the costs independently checked and usually the local rotary club helps us with this. Once its accepted, we approve the project and then we pay on progress. For example; if an orphanage building has to be built, we say will pay you 25% up front and as things progress and we have it checked, we release the funds step by step.

How do the participating members in a challenge raise funds? Well there are several ways to do that. They may raise it by asking their friends. Or their company may help. Sometimes the members organise a dinner or a quiz night to raise funds. It sounds tough but once people hear what you are doing then its not that difficult. We provide each member at the time of reigstration a booklet that has lots of ideas to help raise funds.

Are these funds audited and by whom? We have proper accounting systems in place and are published on our website and anyone can see exactly what amount was raised and what was spent for each challeng. We send regular updates. We are audited every year by PriceWaterhouse and the reports are published online. Brian Wilkie Founder / Chairman

Can you tell us your achievements till date? In the ten years since starting we have done 34 challenges and we have more than 700 people over

26

20 countries and we have raised over half a million Kuwaiti Dinars so far for 34 charities in around 23 countries.

What are some of your upcoming challenges? We have an Everest Base Camp that started on 20th October in Nepal. Other upcoming challenges are: Cycle the 7 Emirates.......................................Nov 2011 Walk the Great Wall of China......................May 2012 Trek to the Roof of Africa...Kilimanjaro...July 2012 Transylvanian Trek, Romania.....................Aug 2012 The Road to Mandalay, Myanmar..............Oct 2012

What is the key difference between Gulf for Good and other charities? We believe that the way to get people involved is to do something. Being involved in the challenge make a big difference. Why people do challenges is because it changes pepople lives. It changes the challenger's life. You come back with a total differnt outlook. Just staying away and talking about poverty is one thing but seeing poverty yourself changes your perespective totally. People come back and are eager to go for the next challege. People come back with a new meaning.

What is the objective of your visit to Kuwait? The objective is to give a talk to the British Business Forum and the Corniche Club and hopefully getting more people from Kuwait coming in for the challenges. We have a great response from our previous interactions in Kuwait and we believe that there is an appetite here in the people living in Kuwait who want to do something to help others.

How much time is required to plan a challenge and raise the fund for it? I would say between three to four months.

How people can approach you regarding the donations or participation in challenges? Our website is the best way to approach us. You can go through our website www.gulf4good.org and know all about us and our challenges. Our email is: admin@gulf4good.org and our office numbers are: +971 4 368 0222

Would you like to give any message to our readers? The message is the same message I give everywhere. Everybody is in its own

comfort zone. We are all in our own boxes. The only way we can do anything to help others is to come out of the comfort zone. Our big message always is "Have you Got What it Takes?" Are you a watcher or are you a doer? If you are a watcher you will never do a Gulf For Good Challeng but if you are one of the people who believes in doing something, you will sign up and all your friend will tell you that you are crazy untill they get involved and then the friends start appreciating you. .

Since launching her label six years ago, Maha Al-Rashed continues to be locally recognised as the owner of a fashion boutique that sells clothing and accessories instore and online hand picked by Maha herself from all over the world from some well known designers. Read our exclusive interview with Maha AlRashed and know all about herself and her love for travelling and gadgets.. Jameel Arif Please briefly introduce yourself to our readers?

My name is Maha Abdulmohsen Al Rashed, I am currently CEO of Mosaic Enterprises a General Trading Company that was established 6 years ago.

Tell us about your education? I graduated from the American University of Sharjah with a bachelors of arts in International Studies, concentration of International Relations, and continued to receive my masters degree from the American University of London in International Law.

And what can you tell us about your professional history? I worked summers at the family business, but I feel that I honestly did not have much work experience as an employee except for a brief 6 months at InfoFort (division of Aramex).

When did you decide to start your own business? I decided to start my own business during my last semester in university. I had a fear that I would not be able to find a job in Kuwait once I got back, and so the best solution was for me to create a job for myself, that way I guaranteed myself that I had something to do once I was back.

Why did you choose to start something in fashion? I enjoy fashion in general, but the whole thing actually happened by accident. While in Dubai I found a little store that sold some of the most unique items I’ve seen, and so I started a conversation with the owner of the store, next thing you know we became friends and business partners with me opening a version of the store in Kuwait.

What makes your boutique unique? Every boutique in Kuwait is unique in its own special way, Mosaic I believe has the ability to cater for all ages; and that we constantly have a change in brands in the boutique never making us dull. We also pride ourselves in travelling all over the world to find new designers that have yet to be discovered. Our second boutique is our children’s store Les PetitsParisiens which I found walking the streets of Beirut a few years ago, and having a little boy, I found it difficult to dress him here without looking like everyone else, and so again the story repeats itself, I had a talk with the owners of the boutique and soon a Les PetitsParisiens Kuwait store opened. Our leather goods store Mosaic Leather has been open for 30 years and is actually my mother’s business that I have grown up around, I spent my childhood in her store and watching her do what I have learned to do myself today, and for that I am always grateful.

How do you select the brands or pieces for your shop? Selection of brands is actually quite difficult. You assume that its like a shop-

ping spree, which is almost every woman’s dream, but the reality is that involves a lot of work in predicting how the market will react to your selection, but I try to go with items that are a bit more conservative to fit the culture and most needs of the market.

Who are your main customers? My customers vary from all ages, there is no specific customer that we cater to, any person is able to walk into the store and find something that would peak their interest.

Who are you favorite designers? At Mosaic there is Boudoir D’Huitres an American label, Ivana Helsinki from Helsinki itself and outside the store there is no one favorite designer that I go to, I believe that you can mix and match to get the look you are going for without having to stick to one designer. But I am a huge fan of shoes.

What are your future plans? We recently opened Elche Spa & Salon an organic spa here in Kuwait with our products imported from an organic farm in Hungary. We started a fine dining and gourmet food catering company named RED, short for Relax, Entertain and Dine. This establishment, as the name might suggest, is aimed at satisfying a vast range of palettes and dining preferences, while exceeding expectations in service and professionalism, enabling the customer as well as his/ her guests to fully enjoy their special occasion.

What are your hobbies besides fashion? I enjoy the day to day activities in life like hanging out on the couch with my family watching TV, sports and of course travelling! I would like to do that more often than I actually do right now.

What other businesses do you have? We also own Element 8 which branches out into areas of expertise: Element 8 Events and Element 8 Productions & Interiors. Some of the most prestigious events in Kuwait were planned and executed under the direction of both these departments jointly, such as the Opening Ceremony of Sabah Al Ahmed Sea City. The renowned Showtime Axis of Evil Comedy Tour was organized by Element 8 Events, and started a comedy trend in Kuwait. Walking around the malls and exhibitions in Kuwait, you can see booths created by Element 8 Productions everywhere!

Tell us more about Elche Spa and Salon? Elche Spa & Salon is an organic spa that we opened April 2010. Our products are brought in from an organic farm in Hungary and are a 100% organic, we believed that with people being more aware of the advantages of organic products that it was the right time to introduce our products to the market.

Tell us about a dream that has turned true? My dream was to have a family and be successful at whatever it was that I decide to do. I am fortunate to have a supportive family that has helped me reach what I consider success. However, I do believe that a person’s measurement of success changes as they go through different stages in their lives.

What sports do you play? Am currently doing a lot of Yoga, which some people may not consider a sport, although you would be surprised how tough it is! I would like to say that I do a lot more, but unfortunately I don’t really have to time to do it.

What is your favorite gadget? Oh God! I have so many of them! I can’t live without my Blackberry, my MacBook, iPad, iPhone and now I’m experimenting with the new Sony Tablet!

What’s your favorite hang out in Kuwait? Home and the baseball fields, its fun to watch a community come together for a common goal.

You are clearly an achiever, but what is your biggest drive? My drive comes from my passion for what I do….. Although I may complain about it, but I love being busy and doing what I do.

How supportive is your husband and how does he support you? My husband is a very big support, without him I probably wouldn’t have reached the point I have today, I always turn to him when I need guidance as he has much more experience than I do, and I am very grateful for that.

How do you find balance between you business and family life? Its tough, sometimes I don’t think it’s a balance at all, but we manage, my husband is there for me when I need a hand, and my mother is always there for me when I need a hand with the little one, but somehow I have managed to find the time for each and to give the same amount of time and effort to both equally.

What is the key to your success? The unbelievable amount of support I have received from my family and friends.

Do you have any pets? I used to, but they had to be moved to my mother’s house because my husband didn’t really like them.

Describe a typical day at your office? A typical day begins with me between 6 and 7 AM starting off with my emails, then by 9 AM walking into the office and nit picking at everything that I think is out of place. Then doing the day to day administrative work and emails with suppliers and shipping agents, costing and display, and of course let’s not forget phone calls, which I really have grown to dislike, as I prefer to communicate by email. And you can always predict that by 11 AM it gets really chaotic for some reason, without fail! But luckily for me, our team is one that you can rely on!

Your message for us at CityPages magazine? I would like to thank you and encourage you to keep up the good work and your constant support of local talent. It is hard to be a small fish in a big pond, but its encouraging to know that someone out there sees us!

What an unusual interview experience it was! How do you feel when you ask for an appointment to interview the General Manager of a luxurious resort and you get to meet him on a day off, when you don't expect anyone to be working. I was first not sure if this interview was actually going to happen but when I arrived at the scheduled time, I was surprised to see that Mr. Hassan working in his office. He asked me to wait for a few minutes and then accompanied me to the restaurant where we had a lavishing lunch while I learnt a lot from him. I was full of enthusiasm and eager to know more and more. I was surprised to learn about the new strategies Mr. Hassan was trying to put in place to exceed their guests expectations. Mr. Hassan also shared several interesting stories of which I was amused to hear that the resort has inhabited some wild foxes which are now humanfriendly and in fact they play with the golfers by holding their golf balls at times. In general, this was a great opportunity for me to learn and here I share my discussions with Mr. Hassan with you: John Miller Please tell us about the Sahara Golf Club?

We are the only certified Golf Course in the State of Kuwait. Our stunning 18hole golf course is built to PGA championship standards and was completed in the early 2007. The course is 6,730 yards long and features three lakes and is surrounded by nearly 5,000 trees. Flood-lit holes allow players to pursue their passion, even at night, thus allowing them to avoid summer’s heat and dust.

When was golf introduced in Kuwait? Golf is a new sport in the Middle-East and particularly in Kuwait. Its existence dates back to the eightes due to the presence of expatriates in the Oil sector. At that time they used to play on the sand. Then there was also a sand ground as part of the Equistian club in the early eighties.

Who owns the Sahara Golf Club? The owner of this project is Al-Jazira Real Estate Company.

Tell us about your staff and team of associates? The team of assocaites who are working at Sahara Golf Club are representing a replica of a mini United Nations coming from different countries. They are all committed to provide a standard and quality service to our memebers and guests. We all work as a team to ensure that every aspect of the golfing experience meets stringent international standards.

Tell us about your philosophies and strategies? In our industry, we provide services. Its a very challenging task because its not only to provide only what the guest expects from you but you are also oblieged to exceed their expectations in order to gain their trust and as a con-

Adapting Businesses HIND AL-NAHEDH to the Social Customer Social Media Geek @Hindrelations

Yes our customers are online social, active and engaging, adapting your business and building your strategies should be smart around the word Social, for many years to come and just like many years ago when the relationship between a brand & a customer in face to face very simple with a big smile face < Social :) The social media movement is far more important than we realize. Several years ago comparing the democratization of information to the economic impact during the Industrial Revolution. The impact of social media is much more than Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube. Social media is a lens into the future of business and the relationships that are created between brands and customers. However, social media can only benefit the organization if its promise is unlocked across the entire organization and not siloed in any one department or function. Hosting a dynamic Facebook presence and active Twitter stream does not make a business social. Pointing to these accounts in marketing and advertising material also do not make a business social. So what, then, defines a social business? A social business is one with its communities, wherever they reside. As customers view businesses as one brand and not as a series of disconnected units or departments, a social business is connected, engaged, and adaptive. United on all fronts, a social business connects the dots between value and customer experiences as it heralds a new era of relationships and operates under a banner of transparency and open leadership. Once-reluctant businesses are now increasingly turning to social media as a means of capturing customer attention. Read any blog or turn to any mainstream media source, and you’ll find countless stories of how social media represent the panacea for all business ills. These ills, however, plague every business. While social media represent a wonderful opportunity

for businesses to get closer to their customers, businesses could also benefit from a little soul searching. Why? In addition to improving customer relationships, social media also represent an amplifier for all aspects of customer experiences—the good, bad, and the ugly. Despite this realization, businesses invest in the cultivation of dedicated communities in fledging social networks because there’s a prevailing perception of necessity, or in some cases it’s recognized as a tactical advantage. We don’t have to venture too far before we stumble upon success story after success story. For example, Coca-Cola has impressively amassed 26 million “Likes” on Facebook, and the Starbucks fandom has percolated to 22 million. These examples become the standard to which other businesses aspire and serve as best practices for others to follow. These social presences offer the semblance of consumer magnetism and honestly, the numbers are nothing short of staggering. In comparison, traffic to the traditional web sites for Coca-Cola and Starbucks pale by comparison at 270,000 and 1.8 million monthly visitors, respectively. With every example we read, we’re led to believe that Facebook, Twitter, et al represent surefire magnets for customer attention and catalysts for interaction—and ultimately loyalty. At the same time, presence in social media enable and inevitably invite customer engagement and feedback. A social business looks at customer activity and designs click paths and experiences internally to guide external experiences. In a 2010 study, examining the social media architectures within enterprise businesses and found that 50% of all social media initiatives reside within the market-

ing department. When combined with corporate communications and web/digital teams, almost 90% of social media is siloed within a marketing function and thus trapping social media’s potential at transforming the organization into a social business. Thus, it’s time to rethink the future of social media. If businesses are truly to become social businesses, they must match the behavior of customers to effectively meet their needs and expectations instead of simply responding to them. Everything begins with the realization that customer needs and characteristics aren’t created equally. In order for businesses to truly become social, the tenets of social media must permeate the entire organization. These businesses build a foundation based on three important pillars: l Connected l Engaged l Adaptive

So you are the architects of a new era of business where adaptive organizations are measured by the ability to shape and steer positive customer experiences before, during, and after transactions... Go Social

Marketing’s Four P’s LANA AL-RESHEED Director of Marketing & PR @LanaAlresheed

First Steps for New Entrepreneurs

Hello. My article this month is dedicated to the new entrepreneurs who have either just established their new business or are in the process of planning to start one. Since the subject I am going to discuss and explain today is very lengthy, I will try to cover it into 2 or more months. Keeping to my subject of marketing, I will discuss today about the 4 critical or important questions or components of marketing known as the four P’s. Marketing your business is about how you position it to satisfy your market’s needs. There are four critical elements in marketing your products and business. These are the four P’s of marketing: 1. Product. The right product to satisfy the needs of your target customer. 2. Price. The right product offered at the right price. 3. Place. The right product at the right price available in the right place to be bought by customers. 4. Promotion. Informing potential customers of the availability of the product, its price and its place. Each of the four P’s is a variable you control in creating the marketing mix that will attract customers to your business. Your marketing mix should be something you pay careful attention to because the success of your business depends on it. As a business manager, you determine how to use these variables to achieve your profit potential. This publication introduces the four P’s of marketing and includes worksheets that will help you determine the most effective marketing mix for your business.

PRODUCT “Product” refers to the goods and services you offer to your customers. Apart from the physical product itself, there are elements associated with your product that customers may be attracted to, such as the way it is packaged. Other product attributes include quality, features, options, services, warranties, and brand name. Thus, you might think of what you offer as a bundle of goods and services. Your product’s appearance, function, and support make up what the customer is actually buying. Successful managers pay close attention to the needs their product bundles address for customers. Your product bundle should meet the needs of a particular target market. For example, a luxury product should create just the right image for “customers who have everything,” while many basic products must be positioned for price conscious consumers. Other important aspects of product may include an appropriate product range, design, warranties, or a brand name. Customer research is a key element in building an effective marketing mix. Your knowledge of your target market and your competitors will allow you to offer a product that will appeal to

customers and avoid costly mistakes. If you are considering starting a new business or adding a new product, then make sure the product bundle will fit your business’s strengths and weaknesses, and that it will provide an ac-

to take advantage of opportunities to add value through processing, packaging, and customer service. Other future growth may allow you to offer your product to different customers. Start-up businesses are most successful when they concentrate their efforts on one product or one market, like a restaurant or a car service center does. Later growth may occur in the same location or may be in different geographic regions. A different type of growth would be a diversification of products, with your business offering related products.

ceptable risk/return tradeoff. For instance, if your business is very good at timely response to customers, then timely service should be an important part of your product bundle. Think long term about your venture by planning for the ways you can deepen and broaden your product bundle. For instance, you may be able

Offering a whole range of products is most successful if the raw materials, production processes, and distribution methods are similar, which means you do not have to acquire new suppliers, skills and equipment, and distribution methods. Try understanding the importance of 'Product' and implement it in your marketing mix. Next month, I will be discussing about 'Price', till then.. Happy Reading and Happy Eid!

Success Coach, Business and Life Mars Venus Coaching, Kuwait

Men and Women are wired differently. They have different hot buttons, different emotional needs. They process information differently. ---Dr. John Gray, author of the bestselling book, Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus

Ladies and gentlemen, I have a question for you: Ladies, when you are stressed, do you feel that chatting with your friends about a problem can really help the situation? Gentlemen, do you feel that if there is a problem, the last thing on the planet you want to do is chat about the problem and the best approach is to figure out a way to solve it, alone? Does this ring true for you? Based on many years of research on the psychology of men and women, in addition to the study of the differences in male/female brain function, Dr. John Gray has concluded that the gender differences between Martians and Venusians are scientifically proven. For example, did you know that men have 6.5 times more gray matter than women, but women have about 10 times more white matter? That means, men have more information processing centers but women have more connections for the different parts of the brain. This explains why men are excellent at concentrating on one issue at a time but women are excellent at multitasking. Let us take a glance at how gender based differences may be vital in our everyday lives. One area which is specifically sensitive to gender based differences is the sales arena. Do you think men and women buy differently? Yes? So, are they being sold to differently? In most cases, No. The sales process is very standardized and the prospect is dealt with in a gender indiscriminant manner, which results with men and women being sold to the same way. An excellent example of how this would play into action would be in the scenario of buying a pair of shoes. Those who are pure Martians buy a pair of shoes because they need new shoes. Martians are in and out in a heartbeat with shoes in hand. Alternatively, those who are pure Venusians buy a pair of shoes to fit their many needs. Venusians want shoes in a specific color to match their

wardrobe, in a certain type of material (leather vs. suede) for cleaning purposes, a specific height of the heel to fit the length of her pants and make her legs look slim, within a price range to fit her budget, a brand name for social status, and the list goes on. So, Martian and Venusian brain anatomy causes them to buy very differently. Martians buy to meet a specific requirement and Venusians buy a well rounded product to meet her many needs. The challenge today is that in the sales process salespeople do not understand the differences in the buying processes of men vs. women. Salesmen/women end up trying to sell a product to a Venusian to fit a specific requirement rather than meet her large spectrum of needs. Worse yet, they may try to rush the decision thinking that her other concerns are petty and unimportant. So, what happens when this is the case? Venusians take their money elsewhere. Alternatively, if the customer is a Martian and is being sold as someone who wants to consider all options, he may become annoyed by the never-ending sales process where all he wanted to do is a quick buy. So, in the end, it’s clear that gender based differences affect all aspects of our lives. The sales process is especially sensitive to these biological differences and can cause loss of a sale and money to be left on the table. With the economy today, gender based sales can provide the competitive advantage many companies need to ensure growing sales and profit! Want to know how gender intelligent you are? Take the Mars Venus Gender Quotient test today at www.marsvenusexecutivetraining.com and find out how much you really know!

Beat diabetes the jump Women and Diabetes - Facts and Figures There were an estimated 143 million women with diabetes in 2010. By 2030, this number is expected t o rise to 222 million. Women make up approximately 50% of the 300 million people currently living with diabetes. Diabetes is the ninth leading cause of death in women globally, causing 2.1 million deaths per year. The greatest increase in the female diabetes population over the next 20 years will be in the Middle East and North Africa Region (96%), followed by the Africa Region (90.4%) and South East Asia (74.4%).

Poor diet and nutrition Being overweight or obese is a critical factor in the risk of diabetes. Rapid urbanisation in developed and developing countries alike has led to a change in dietary patterns, particularly an increased intake of energy-dense foods. This transition to a diet high in fat, sugar and salt has fuelled increasing levels of overweight and obesity. Girls are also more likely to be overweight than boys.

Physical inactivity Low levels of physical activity are a driving force behind increasing levels of diabetes. Urban living is often associated with lower levels of physical activity than rural living, increasing the risk of overweight and obesity and therefore diabetes. Physical mobility for many girls and women in developing countries is curtailed by the social and cultural context they live in. They are restrained from practicing regular physical activity and sport, whether through a lack of safe and supportive environments, a shortage of income and leisure time, negative cultural stereotypes of body image, social norms surrounding dress and mobility or due to the common perception that sport is ‘unfeminine’. Access to and participation in physical exercise is not only a right in itself, it is also a catalyst for a number of development goals and the empowerment of women and girls. Environments supporting physical activity for women and girls will contribute to reducing rates of diabetes.

Types of diabetes There are three main types of diabetes:

Type 1 diabetes is sometimes called insulin-depend-

ent, immune-mediated or juvenile-onset diabetes. It is caused by an auto-immune reaction where the body’s defence system attacks the insulin-producing cells. People with type 1 diabetes produce very little or no insulin. The disease can affect people of any age, but usually occurs in children or young adults. The risk factors for type 1 diabetes are still being researched. However, having a family member with type 1 diabetes increases the risks for developing the condition, as do the presence of some genetic factors.

Type 2 diabetes is sometimes called non-insulin dependent diabetes or adult-onset diabetes, and accounts for at least 90% of all cases of diabetes. It is characterised by insulin resistance and relative insulin deficiency. The diagnosis of type 2 diabetes usually occurs after the age of 40 but can occur earlier, especially in populations with high diabetes prevalence. It is often, but not always, associated with obesity, which itself can cause insulin resistance and lead to elevated blood glucose levels. Several risk factors have been associated with type 2 diabetes and include: n Obesity n Diet and physical inactivity n Increasing age n Insulin resistance n Family history of diabetes n Ethnicity

Changes in diet and physical activity related to rapid development and urbanization have led to sharp increases in the numbers of people developing diabetes. Gestational diabetes (GDM) is a form of diabetes consisting of high blood glucose levels during pregnancy. It develops in one in 25 pregnancies worldwide and is associated with complications in the period immediately before and after birth. Other specific types of diabetes also exist.

Management and prevention of diabetes Type 2 diabetes can be prevented in many cases by maintaining a healthy weight and being physically active. There is no cure for diabetes, but effective treatment exists. If you have access to the appropriate medication, quality of care and good medical advice, you should be able to lead an active and healthy life and

ing way! reduce the risk of developing complications. Diabetes prevention and good diabetes control means keeping your blood sugar levels as close to normal as possible. This can be achieved by a combination of the following: Physical Activity: a goal of at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity per day (e.g. brisk walking, swimming, cycling, dancing) on most days of the week. Body weight: weight loss improves insulin resistance, blood glucose and high lipid levels in the short term, and reduces blood pressure. It is important to reach and maintain a healthy weight. Healthy Eating: avoiding foods high in sugars and saturated fats, and limiting alcohol consumption. Avoid tobacco: tobacco use is associated with more complications in people with diabetes. Monitoring for complications: monitoring and early detection of complications is an essential part of good diabetes care. This includes regular foot and eye checks, controlling blood pressure and blood glucose, and assessing risks for cardiovascular and kidney disease. There is substantial evidence that achieving a healthy body weight and moderate physical activity can help prevent the development of type 2 diabetes. In primary prevention there is an important role for the diabetes educator to help people understand the risks and set realistic goals to improve health. IDF recommends a goal of at least 30 minutes of daily exercise, such as brisk walking, swimming, cycling or dancing. Regular walking for at least 30 minutes per day, for example, has been shown to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by 35-40%.

ir a H y h lt a e H r o f s d o Top Fo You shampoo, you condition, you use shine serum, and yet your hair still doesn't look as young and healthy as you would like it to. If this is the case for you, try eating more of these foods for healthy hair. Below I describe the nutrients that I try to include in my daily diet to keep my locks looking luscious. Dr. Nazia Nausheen Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5): Benefit: May prevent the graying of hair. Food sources include: Eggs, whole grain breads and cereals, cooked dried beans and peas, nuts, dates, potatoes, avocados, and cauliflower

Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Benefit: Prevents brittle hair. Food sources include: walnuts, salmon, tuna, flax seed, pumpkin seeds

Protein: Benefit: May help to lengthen hair by promoting hair growth. Food Sources Include: lean meats, eggs, low-fat dairy products, beans/legumes

Vitamins A and C: Benefit: Helps the body to produce sebum, which keeps hair shiny and helps to prevent dandruff. Food sources that contain both Vitamin A and Vitamin C include: Kale, sweet potatoes, and cantaloupe.

Zinc: Benefit: Prevents hair loss.

Food sources include: lean beef, poultry, lamb, whole grain cereal, oysters, beans, and crab/lobster

Calcium: Benefit: May help to thicken hair by promoting healthy hair growth. Food sources include: low-fat milk, low-fat cheese, low-fat yogurt, canned salmon, blackstrap molasses, turnip greens

Biotin: Benefit: May help hair to grow stronger. Food sources include: egg (yolks), wheat germ, oatmeal, wholegrain bread, mushrooms, cauliflower, peanuts, and cheese

It should also be noted that although there are many supplements on the market for healthy hair, it is a better idea to get these nutrients from food. Although the nutrients above are healthy for the hair, if you are taking a supplement, which may contain a mega-dose, you may get too much of the nutrient, which can actually have the reverse effect and lead to hair loss. Also, going on a crash diet or a very low-calorie diet can be detrimental to your hair. Many hair problems, such as losing hair, brittle hair, or dull hair are caused by nutrient deficiencies, which are common in people who are on a very low-calorie diet that may not ensure intake of all necessary nutrients. To lose weight without becoming deficient in key nutrients, I recommended consulting with a registered dietitian.

The popularity of the pomegranate fruit is growing rapidly as more people discover its unique health benefits. Pomegranates are a good source of polyphenols and other compounds that reduce inflammation and destroy free radicals. Preliminary studies show that the unique compounds in pomegranate fruit lower the risk of heart disease and some types of cancer. Sure, pomegranates are good for your “insides”, but special compounds found in this fruit could help you look more beautiful on the outside too - by reducing skin wrinkling and sun damage. What are the benefits of pomegranate for skin health and aging? A compound in pomegranate may help reduce the breakdown of collagen, the protein that gives skin its useful vitality - and prevents wrinkling and sagging. Korean researchers isolated a component, called ellagic acid, from the pomegranate fruit and applied it to the skin of hairless mice. When they exposed the mice to a dose of UVB radiation, which would cause sun damage, the mice didn’t experience the characteristic skin thickening that would normally occur. Not only that, but they didn’t have an increase in inflammatory cells that are a marker of skin damage and collagen breakdown. The ellagic acid from the pomegranate fruit seemed to protect the skin of these mice from the type of sun damage that could lead to premature aging and skin wrinkling.

Pomegranate Benefits For Human skin cells When researchers applied ellagic acid in pomegranate directly to human skin cells and exposed them to UVB radiation, the collagen-producing cells, called fibroblasts, didn’t undergo the expected breakdown in collagen. At least in the laboratory, pomegranate has benefits for human skin cells as

well. Could the ellagic acid in pomegranate be the key to naturally preventing wrinkles and sagging skin?

Pomegranate Benefits For Skin: The Bottom Line Because of findings like this, more companies are adding pomegranate to their skin care products. Unfortunately, most contain only small amounts of the active compounds - probably not enough to have real benefits. A better option is to buy pomegranate extract from a company like skinactives.com and add it to your favorite skin cream. This way you can get higher concentrations of ellagic acid and other health polyphenols that protect skin cells from the aging effects of the sun. One word of warning. Only use pomegranate extract in conjunction with your regular sun protection. Pomegranate extract is not a substitute for sunscreen, but it may offer some additional protection against skin aging that a sunscreen can’t provide.

Type II Diabetes

From Symptoms to Control

Type II Diabetes is one of the two forms of conditions in which either the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or red blood cells block insulin from being absorbed inside them, or both. Type II Diabetes, also known as Adult Onset Diabetes, affects 90% - 95% of the population that have been diagnosed with some form of diabetes. Insulin is a hormone that helps the body to store sugars for fuel thus when either the pancreas is in a state of low production or the blood cells are blocking the absorption of insulin, a build-up of sugar remains in the blood stream. Over time this excess sugar can cause more serious health concerns such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure. Dr. Nazia Nausheen Symptoms Of Type II Diabetes The symptoms of Type II Diabetes are: wexcessive thirst wexcessive hunger wfrequent urination wfatigue, and dizziness. Some people’s symptoms begin with a general malaise or simply not feeling well. There are several factors that can predispose a person to Type II Diabetes; a diabetes diagnosis of a grandparent, parent, or sibling; a history of gestational diabetes; or being overweight.

Getting Tested The first test that your physician may perform is a simple finger stick blood test to check your blood sugar. If your physician suspects that you may be diabetic, the next test performed is usually the Hemoglobin A1C test. It is also performed as a finger stick and the results will give your physician an average of the sugar concentration over the past 2-3

months. A normal Hemoglobin A1C is below 6.0. Anything over 6.0 tells your physician that you have diabetes.

Controlling Type II Diabetes The good news of a Type II Diabetes diagnosis is that it is controllable through diet, exercise,

As little as 15 minutes of exercise per day can make a dramatic difference in your blood sugar levels. medication, or a combination of these. After a diagnosis, it is generally a good idea to see a dietician who will help you to change your diet and gain control over your blood sugar. The most important factor is blood sugar control through diet is to watch your intake of

carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are the component of foods that create energy or fuel for your body. Carbohydrates occur in the form of either sugars or fiber. An increase in fiber and a lowering of sugar intake will help to get your blood sugar to a more normal level. In some cases, medication such as insulin replacement along with the dietary changes are necessary to gain control of your blood sugar levels. Along with dietary changes, an increase in the amount of exercise you perform is essential. Exercise helps the body to both produce more insulin as well as store the excess sugars in muscle tissue. As little as 15 minutes of exercise per day can make a dramatic difference in your blood sugar levels. Walking, biking, and low impact aerobics are all wonderful exercises that will increase the body’s ability to store sugars properly. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed above or have a predisposition to diabetes, call your physician to schedule a blood sugar test.

'11/22/63'

Stephen King

In 11/22/63, Stephen King imagines what would have happened if a man with the power to time travel attempted to stop the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

From the author of the bestselling biographies of Benjamin Franklin and Albert Einstein, this is the exclusive biography of Steve Jobs. Based on more than forty interviews with Jobs conducted over two years—as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues—Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing. At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge, and when societies around the world are trying to build digital-age economies, Jobs stands as the ultimate icon of inventiveness and applied imagination. He knew that the best way to create value in the twenty-first century was to connect creativity with technology. He built a company where leaps of the imagination were combined with remarkable feats of engineering. Although Jobs cooperated with this book, he asked for no control over what was written nor even the right to read it before it was published. He put nothing offlimits. He encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly. And Jobs speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about the people he worked with and competed against.

Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A., is presenting at the Volkswagen Group Night in Frankfurt the most extreme Gallardo ever: the Gallardo LP 570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale. Automo¬bili Lamborghini is bringing motor racing excitement directly to the road. This new and most extreme top model in the Gallardo lineup is based on the successful race car from the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo, the world’s fastest single-make series. The car will be produced in a limited run of 150 numbered units.

The Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo championship brings professional racers and gentlemen drivers face-toface in fiercely fought battles on Europe’s most challenging racetracks such as Monza, Silverstone and Hockenheim. There are many similarities between the racing and road versions of this super sports car. For example, they both share the same V10 power¬plant, which is used in the racing version with no modifications.

Right from first glance, these similarities are even more evident in the new Gallardo LP 570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale. In fact, it is equipped with the same rear spoiler that offers greater aerodynamic load – reaching in the best aerodynamic condi¬tion 3 times the load of the Gallardo LP 560-4 – for increased dynamic stability during tight, high-speed driving. As in the race cars, the rear spoiler can be varied manually in order to let the driver optimize the car’s performance according to the track or road characteristics.

Like the race car, the Gallardo Super Trofeo Stradale offers the robotized e-gear six-speed transmission controlled by steering wheel paddles as standard equipment. This electronically controlled system shifts through its six gears smoothly and much faster than any human being could. And for maximum acceleration from a standing start, the transmission can be set to the “Thrust Mode” – a program that allows to reach the best performance possible executing a racing start with minimal tire slippage at an initial engine speed of approximately 5000 rpm.

Every kilometer in the Gallardo LP 570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale is packed with sheer excite¬ment, in part due to its unrelenting grip in virtually all situations thanks to all-wheel drive. At the end of the day, the Lamborghini Super Trofeo is the only single-brand racing series in the world that features all-wheel drive race cars. The Gallardo Super Trofeo Stradale is a highly concentrated driving machine offering a truly stunning driving experience with breathtaking cornering speeds and fast, immediate response. Its road manners are always precise, stable and completely safe.

ORGANIZATIONS IN KUWAIT MUST PREPARE FOR THE UNIFIED COMMUNICATIONS BOOM, SAYS EXPERT

Manu Bonanassie, Regional Sales Director at Brocade says that with the wide adoption of Unified Communication in the region, the right infrastructure is critical or else the entire system will break-down Adoption of Unified Communications technology is reaching critical mass, corroborated by a report from In-Stat earlier this year that predicted small office spending on IP telephony would grow by 83 per cent in 2011. The trend is moving away from premises-based Unified Communications towards technology hosted in the Cloud, as consumers become aware of the benefits and the technology becomes more accessible, affordable and scalable. According to research conducted by Frost & Sullivan last year, the Unified Communications (UC) market in the Middle East is expected to reach US$235 million by 2014. Manu Bonnassie, Regional Sales Director - Central Europe, Middle East and Africa (CEMA) at Brocade Communications says that Unified Communications brings benefits to businesses that only a few years ago were in the realm of science fiction, enabling uninterrupted, high-definition video conferencing and real-time collaboration for remote workers in disparate cities, countries or continents – a revolution in working comparable to or even exceeding email. Workforce productivity, better customer / staff interaction and lower costs through reduced travel are just three areas where Unified Communications is beginning to bring enormous value to organisations, from small businesses to global enterprises. These benefits are only realised, however, if communications are delivered with uninterrupted service quality, reliability, security and compatibility for IP-based devices, video and converged multimedia desktop applications. High

latency, dropped packets or service interruptions are simply not tolerated by users as they are for more traditional methods of communication. Since voice, video and audio are very “data rich” traffic, the pressure being placed on networks to support these services is growing at an exponential rate. These findings are not surprising. Organisations in Kuwait seeking to deploy Unified Communications services face several infrastructure-related challenges. To begin with, the network must meet the rigorous latency requirements for voice and video conferencing; meanwhile, the infrastructure must support power delivery to IP phones and other Unified Communications devices. Communications are absolutely critical for business continuity and as a result, downtime is intolerable. Networks must therefore be able to guarantee the utmost levels of availability. Similarly, security is a key concern for users, and IP video and audio communications must be protected against threats – while still being able to work across firewalls. If left unchecked, these factors can have a significant impact on Unified Communications success and the end-user experience. Delivering voice and Unified Communications solutions requires more than just basic network connectivity, but a complete set of switching and routing solutions that help organisations implement these services while leveraging their existing network infrastructures.

BOSCH’S ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROL UNITS REACH 250 MILLION IN OCTOBER 2011

Bosch plays a critical role in increasing efficiency of engines and falls in line with UAE initiative of carbon emissions reduction Bosch celebrated its milestone last month for manufacturing the 250 millionth electronic engine control unit in its location in Salzgitter, Germany. This unit ensures that the right amount of fuel is injected into the cylinders of modern diesel and gasoline engines at the right time. Bosch launched the first generation of this engine management system in 1979, in the six-cylinder (BMW 732i). Known as Motronic, this system is still the technological basis for all present and future generations of Bosch’s engine control units. For the first time, Motronic allowed fuel injection to be controlled precisely. In spark-ignition engines, injection was combined with ignition in a digital system. Tried and tested millions of times over, the ME(D)17 engine management system in the spark ignition engine and the EDC17 (electronic diesel control) in the diesel play a decisive part in making these engines not only reliable, but also economical and clean. In 2011, Bosch plans to produce some 25 million engine control units worldwide.
