BuzzArt: A Shockwave of

Shaza Ayesh What unites a generation of creative talents? What brings them, in all their various styles and mediums, under the same umbrella of public exhibition? Fashion. Items ranging from handmade end-tables boldly inked with old Arab adages; shoes that draw on the artistic merit of Arabic calligraphy; t-shirts that express a new flare of local, indie character— these are all the embodiment of such a union between fashion and art. This summer, the Fa Gallery celebrates all that is both artistically fresh and fashionably striking in the up and coming fashion scene at the BuzzArt Summer Retail Festival. Bringing Kuwait the most unique in both local and international talent, here are but a few of the highlights which make this retail event one of Kuwait's must-see exhibitions this summer. Upon entering the white-bathed gallery, one is first met by an assortment of furniture accessories from sofa cushions to end-tables. These pieces pay tribute to the classic and conservative tradition with which the Arab home is familiar without betraying creative design or modern appeal. Fann is a collection of handicraft home accessories which highlight the beauty of the Arab tradition through a modern medium of expression. By writing out old Arab proverbs in rich ink and displaying classic Arab imagery, painted simple and stark against bright backgrounds, Fann's collection is a quaint expression of Arab tradition in today’s household. Similarly, The Pillowcase collection of home furnishings shares this reverence for Arab domesticity, which carries a classic, slightly romantic sentiment, but reintroduces it with boldly modern colour choices and

design patterns. The Silsal Furniture collection is also available at BuzzArt. The jewellery display offered at BuzzArt is another luxurious example of the artistic inspiration which a worldly cocktail of designers lends to fashion design. In Anwar Ghader's collection he encapsulates a sense of refined simplicity and intimate craftsmanship. His pieces present a character of traditional elegance in exciting dimensions. The Lina Jewellery collection enjoys an interesting combination of both gentle sophistication and rougher forms. By incorporating one of the world's most symbolically feminine stones, the pearl, with rougher constructions of gold and silver chains, Lina Jewellery achieves a beautiful marriage between the edgier and softer sides of fashion. The SNR jewellery line by Sharifa Al-Roumi imbues all the pieces in the classic sense of luxury for which heavy materials and precious stones are known. Her designs carry a sense of traditional wealth and pay homage to the Arab custom of beautiful arabesque embellishments. Other jewellery and accessory designers which are showcasing at BuzzArt include Tatiana Apraez, Lama Hourani, and Serpui Marie. Surely, however, the most striking and sought after attractions of the BuzzArt ensemble are the clothing lines. Spanning from Kuwait to Brazil, the selection of clothing lines which appear at BuzzArt are a perfect expression of the diverse pool of this year’s promising fashion talents from across the globe. Kuwait’s own Tahir Sultan certainly stands as one of the most fashion-forward creators of the bunch. Armed with a daring

13

mix of street attitude and feminine simplicity, Sultan showcases a collection which blends the modest elegance of Arab beauty with a shock of vibrant color palettes and edgy silhouettes. On the more casual, but equally fascinating, side of the fashion line-up comes LocalTees, an indie t-shirt company based out of Kuwait. Inspiring a more pop-art, street hip vibe, LocalTees is nothing if not boldly fresh. By creating both Kuwait-inspired and international print t-shirts LocalTees has created a promising and highly exclusive fashion line for a wanting and expanding indie community in Kuwait. The Aennis Eunnis line by designer Anas Younis Shanaah brings its own take on fashion meets identity. Utilizing the flowing, artistic geometry of Arabic calligraphy, Shannah has literally infused Arabic into such pieces as a stiletto heel, of which the defining structure is made up of Arabic letters. By recognizing the sinuously fluid nature of the time-honored art of Arabic calligraphy, the designer has created a statement which is not only bold and exciting in a fashionable sense, but in a distinctly Arab one as well. The clothing is not simply inspired by Arabic, it is Arabic. Other clothing lines which are featured at BuzzArt include Fahad Al-Marzouq, Amna Al-Terkait, Design Me, Nadine Mneimneh, Jenan, Pria Kataria Puri, Al-Zain Designs, Anunciacao, and Zür. The BuzzArt Summer Retail Festival will run from the 5th of July to the 29th of August. At 2 week intervals throughout this period it will present different pieces by the same designers for the occasions of Ramadan, Qerqe’an, Eid, and more. Creating a platform for the latest and greatest in all up and coming fashion talents, BuzzArt is truly one of this summer’s most exciting exhibitions and is definitely not one to miss out on.

Break those bad habits, create a new you “on your way to a more desired Ramadhan” Naseera Hoorzook

Naseera is a South African Social worker with international experience, having lived in Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. She has experience in teaching young children and is a qualified Neuro Linguistic Practitioner, Hypnotherapist, Life coach and Hypnobirthing therapist. She loves spending her time at home with her little girl.

Maria had this habit of drinking loads of energy drinks. The red bulls, bio pluses, rockstars, boosts, you name it. She noticed she needed more of the drinks because the energy boosts she got from them were having less of an effect on her. The intensifying habit began making her feel lethargic and ill, and this made her realize and question her habit that became an addiction. By following a simple process her addiction was broken quickly and the results everlasting.

A question on the mind of many dog owners, as their pooch relaxes in-front of their stereo, is whether or not dogs really like music. It's not uncommon to see a pet dog who seems to be intent on listening to music. Indeed, anyone who's seen the logo of Nipper the dog, posing for Gramophone records, may automatically assume all dogs enjoy whiling away the hours listening to a tune. However, the juries out on whether dogs actually like music or not.

NaturesPet.com

are certainly believers. They produce music recorded especially for pets, and picture a boxer dog wearing headphones on their website, no doubt having a great time hearing music made especially to suit his taste. However, are such sites a gimmick? Or have they got their facts right and have an understanding of our furry friends needs. A study by animal behaviourist Deborah Wells backs up this theory. Apparently results of her research into dogs and music revealed that canines find certain types of classical music soothing and relaxing, while not caring either way for radio shows or pop music. It would seem that dogs have preferences when it comes to music, just like humans do. Some animal shelters, who try to find new homes for dogs, have started playing gentle music to calm them. This is particularly effective for dogs in a shelter on November the fifth who find that music helps them cope with the loud bangs and distress caused by fireworks. The news that music can be good for the well-being of dogs has spread further afield than animal shelters

into veterinary clinics too. Live Science reports that musician Alianna Boone conducted an experiment which resulted in hospitalized dogs experiencing a lower heart rate when harp music was played to them. This may lead to the conclusion that, not only do dogs like particular styles of music, but it can help them relax and possibly heal faster as a result. Both people and animals tend to get better faster when they feel peaceful and aren't struggling to cope. Interestingly, although not surprisingly, it's been discovered that dogs aren't keen on certain percussion instruments which are reminiscent of the sound of gunshots. They also don't like the word 'no' inserted into songs. Presumably they would prefer the words biscuits and walkies. Skip Haynes, working alongside an animal communicator, on an album for pets made sure that his music would go down a treat with dogs by avoiding sounds they didn't like. There are many people who believe dogs truly like listening to music, and have utilised gentle, soothing sounds to aid dogs recuperation and promote their welfare. It may not be long before our canine friends have their own music collections, music shops and favorites saved on their very own ipods.

10 Incredibly

Dangerous Doctors

Doctor Zoidberg is one of the reasons I love Futurama. His constant failures at curing even basic illnesses due to an awful understanding of human anatomy make every episode all the better. This is a look at 10 real doctors that were just as bad, if not worse, than Zoidberg.

3. James Clark

1. Galen Galen caused millions of deaths by popularizing Humorism - the belief that the human body is filled with black bile, yellow bile, phlegm, and blood. He had never seen the inside of a human body because Romans considered dissection sacrilegious and wrote most of his influential anatomy books by observing, reasoning, and mostly guessing. The Catholic Church demonstrated that it always has great ideas by declaring him the only authority on human anatomy, leading to centuries of Europeans believing that the brain was a phlegm clot.

2. Guy-Crescent Fagon Louis XIV spent his

entire reign turning France into the dominant European power, but spent his final years drunkenly stumbling around Versailles (and stinky) after Fagon put him on a diet of wine to cure a gangrenous foot. (It didn’t work.) Fagon then proved he was better suited to be a spy by wiping out most of Louis XIV’s living heirs in an attempt to cure an outbreak of measles through bleedings and forced vomiting. Louis XV, a baby at the time, survived only because his nurse refused to hand him over to Fagon. Louis XV’s reign signaled a drastic downturn in Bourbon popularity and power.

Queen Victoria also had a doctor that helped change the United Kingdom’s history. Victoria and Prince Albert had turned the monarchy into a symbol of morality, but Clark killed Albert after he diagnosed his typhoid fever as the common cold. Victoria spent the rest of her life mourning. He then caused a huge scandal (by Victorian standards) when he diagnosed Flora Hastings, an unmarried lady-in-waiting, as pregnant. Two other doctors disagreed, citing that she was a virgin, but Clark convinced Victoria that he had run across other virgin births in his time. Victoria’s reputation was marred when Hastings died and an autopsy revealed that she had liver cancer.

4. Francis Willis In the 18th century it was believed that the only way to cure mental patients was through restraint and beatings. The idea was to subdue to patient. Willis legitimized this by “curing”King George III’s insanity through torture, a straight jacket, and length of rope. Copycat sanitariums, each advertising even more brutal methods, quickly opened up and became booming businesses as dumping grounds for troublesome family members. At the height of the madhouse-for-sale craze, it was common for husbands to have their wives declared insane by physicians and to pay a yearly fee to keep her at a madhouse indefinitely.

5. Walter Freeman

INSIGHTPAGES

The treatment of mental illness had not changed much since Willis’ time until the introduction of drugs in the ’50s. A decade before then, Freeman ushered in one of the darkest periods in psychiatry’s history by touting the “ice pick” lobotomy – where a sharp instrument is inserted through the eye socket to destroy the frontal lobes – as the cure for everything from depression to hyperactive children. It became incredibly popular, over 50,000 were performed, with Freeman performing over 3,000 himself in his lobotomobile. Freeman believed in lobotomies even after being discredited. He spent his final years visiting his victims, trying to prove they had benefited from his work.

8. Josef Mengele The German, and better known, counterpart to Ishii, Mengele performed weird experiments on concentration camp victims that ranged from trying to change eye color through chemical injections, using X-Ray machines to sterilize women, and dissecting live babies. He was obsessed with twins, and once spent a whole night cataloging the body parts of 14 Gypsy twins after injecting their hearts with chloroform. He even supervised an attempt to create conjoined twins by having two people sewn together. (It didn’t work.) He kept a troupe of dwarfsaround him at all times and called them his family. He escaped to South America after the war and died while swimming in Brazil.

9. John R. Brinkley

One of the most gifted surgeons of his time, Lane popularized colectomies because he believed evolution was steaming by so quickly that the colon was now a vestigial organ that caused all health problems. (He also believed that red heads could never get constipated.) He was quick to snip away lengths of the colon if a patient came to him with even minor ailments. His influence in royal circles turned colectomies into one of the most popular medical procedures for a while. It wasn’t until the Royal Society of Medicine in London discredited him that he started promoting a healthy lifestyle that involved eating a lot of fiber to solve one’s colon problems.

Brinkley, a small town doctor with a diploma mill degree, popularized the practice of implanting of goat testicles in men after a farmer complained about his libido. Brinkley remembered that goats were especially virile and suggested implanting their testicular glands in the farmer. Nine months later the birth of the farmer’s son, aptly named Billy, turned Brinkley into one of the most popular doctors of the late 19th century until his license was taken away from him. The libidinous boost was entirely psychological, as the body simply absorbed the foreign glands, but people rarely came forward to decry Brinkley because he claimed it only worked on intelligent men.

7. Shirō Ishii

10. Edward Bodkin

6. William Arbuthnot-Lane

World War II was a period when science and technology made leaps and bounds. On the Axis side some stomach turning methods were used to push medical science forward. Ishii, a covert medical researcher for the Japanese, used thousands of Chinese – whom he called “logs” – in brutal tests. He had limbs hacked off to study blood loss, had body parts frozen and thawed out to study frostbite, and had bombs strapped to live victims to test their effectiveness. He forced most of his staff to commit suicide after his unit was disbarred but personally accepted immunity in exchange for his data. Some believe he immigrated to the United States after the war, but no one really knows.

On the other extreme of testicles is Bodkin, a Bill Maher lookalike who was arrested for performing 5 unlicensed castrations in in 1999. He was going to perform a 6th until the man got cold feet and informed police Bodkin intended to castrate young boys. Bodkin advertised his services as a cutter – an underground surgeon – in ball fetishism magazines with the stipulation that the castrati allow him to sell tapes of the process. He kept his “trophies” in jars next to his fridge. When the state prosecutor was asked for a motive, he responded: “I can’t sit here as a reasonable human being and give you an intelligent answer to that.”

A Summer Painting Course in Florence

Lewis B. Chapman The coach from the terminal to the plane is packed full. The driver stops intermittently and all the passengers in the centre of the bus gasp and cling to one of three yellow posts in the centre of the chassis. The plane seems strange to me as we make our approach. It has high wings from which four chunky jet engines dangle precariously. I prefer a nice elegant stretch of wing to look out at from my window seat, with the jets tucked neatly below. I suppress my misgivings and turn my thoughts to the two weeks to come. I have been aware of this painter’s course for almost ten years now, and to be actually enrolled, on a plane to Florence with the course starting on Monday seems surreal. Will I be good enough? Will there be enough time to learn the ways of the old masters? The last time I had been to Florence was when I was 18. The city has since become overrun with tourists, but the beauty of the architecture and the art will always endure. I had spent most evenings wandering through the streets sampling the gorgeous ice cream. My favourite place to stop was in the piazza outside the Palazzo Vecchio. There was live music every evening and a lovely friendly atmosphere with huge sculptures of Perseus and David watching over us. It was just before I would begin my degree in Fine Art and the History of Art at Goldsmiths College in London. My father was happy for me to go and visit the painting academies and see what I thought of the work they were producing. What I found was technically stunning, but conceptually uninteresting to me at that time. It seemed a shame that such skill should be spent on mimicking the styles and often the subjects of artists long gone. It seemed a twist of fate that would compound this view. One painting master invited me to sit with him and he told me that he and his students were, ‘suffering for the sins of modernism’. I failed to notice his wry smile which I believe I can remember now. On one of my trips across the city by bus, I noticed a banner advertising a modern artist that was all sploshes and slashes and drips of paint. I didn’t feel drawn to either camp. I would have to find my own way.

Florence has always been a great mystery in my mind, a place that inspires me with dreams of great things. I left the city reluctantly, but I knew at some point in the future I would return. Since then, I have completed my degree, completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Education at the University of Cambridge and become a professional artist. Through my experience of painting I have come to appreciate the value of technical knowledge. I don’t believe that imagination or creativity can be taught, only encouraged. Technique, the box of tools with which we can realise our creative imagination, can be learnt. The greater the choice of tools, the more open the possibilities are for the end result. I consider myself self taught when it comes to drawing and most of my painting technique. But I could see that my ability to use paint could develop at different rates. I began to think that I could benefit from a boost of technical expertise. What better training ground than the human figure, with our subtlety, solidity and emotive quality? Doesn’t all art begin here in some way? I decided to enrol on the figure painting course at the Angel Academy of Art in Florence. Miraculously, the plane landed and I spent three eventful weeks in Florence. The people I met were friendly, thoughtful and intelligent. The Tuscan

food was great, as could only be expected. I often ate lunch with my course mates at the Hostaria Del Bricco on the via san Niccolo which serves fine food and drink. The course was intense. Our tutor hailed from Chicago and he delivered his instruction with almost clinical indifference. I was happy with this; after all I enrolled to learn technique, not how to be an artist. The drawing system is simple and effective, but it requires absolute focus. It involves using the head and shoulders as a unit of measurement for plotting the position of the rest of the body. This makes for a more accurate drawing and a better finished painting. The colour theory for dealing with painting flesh is also very enlightening. Our tutor explained how the Old Masters brought their paintings to life through maintaining the same hue through different values and chromas. Simply put - lighter brighter, darker greyer. This technique takes effort and sensitivity to master but the reward is great. As part of the course we were encouraged to visit the Palazzo Pitti to view some of the paintings on display. To see original works by Caravaggio and Titian among others was a great help to see how the masters had handled flesh in a way that seemed to me almost magical. Over the two weeks I amassed several studies of varying size to document the techniques. I was pleased that my existing drawing skill served me well so that I could focus more on giving form to the limbs of the model. Now I appreciate how difficult it is to achieve the subtle effects of light on flesh I have a deeper respect for the Masters who dedicated their lives to perfecting this skill. I also learnt a few tricks to give the paint different appearances. Adding dammar varnish to ivory black makes it as dark as possible; adding chalk to titanium gives a little body to highlights. We used a drying agent so the oils would be dry by the time we would all be flying home. I rolled all my canvases up and transported them in a plastic artist’s tube with me as cabin baggage. The terracotta roof tiles, the winding roads and the silver river Arno become a pattern of lines and dots and then disappear beneath the clouds. I am back on the plane with high wings again and my mind is full of memories and even more questions. Will I put into practice what I have learnt? How will what I have learnt be useful to my own work? I am sure that my box of tools is more sophisticated now, and this is a reassuring thought. I am still of the opinion that technical ability is only part of what makes an artist- the other part is more of a challenge to articulate in words. Didn’t Edward Hopper say something along the lines of, if I could say it in words, why would I bother to paint? I think that painting is like any other language in that it needs a vocabulary and a grammar to communicate meaning. My painting course has broadened my vocabulary and grammar, but now it is for me to decide what to say... and I can’t wait to get my brushes wet again! Screw This, Screw That:

Why We Have Different Types of Screws? If you’ve ever mistakenly grabbed the Phillips head screwdriver when you needed a flat head, you’ve probably asked yourself why there are different types of screws. Let’s start at the beginning.

The screwdriver, originally called a screwturner or turnscrew, entered the world inconspicuously and kept a very low profile until its 300th birthday. Historians believe it was invented in Germany, but aren’t sure exactly when. The Medieval Housebook of Wolfegg Castle, the oldest known written reference to the tool, has a hazy publishing date somewhere between 1475 and 1490. Considering the invention likely predates the book by at least a few years, the mid to late 15th century is about as exact a birthday as it gets. For about 300 years, the persistent presence of screws is the only solid evidence that screwdrivers even existed. Then, suddenly, documentation of screwdrivers exploded across Europe, particularly in France. Early screwdrivers had pear-shaped handles and were made for slotted screws. Metal screws as we know them today have been in use since at least the 15th century for cabinetry work and to secure plates on jousting armor. Before that, wooden screws were used in wine and olive oil presses as far back as the 1st – 3rd century BC (how they turned them for so long without a screwdriver, I haven’t been able to figure out). These early metal screws were prohibitively expensive. It wasn’t until several advances in screw making – among them, Jesse Ramsden and Henry Maudslay’s screw-cutting lathes and David Wilkinson’s and Job and William Wyatt’s mass production of screws on assembly line-like systems – occurred around the beginning of the First Industrial Revolution that the screw became easy enough to produce to become popular and widespread. This increase in popularity, of course, led to the refinement and diversification of the screwdriver. The tool took on many different shapes and sizes, though for a long time every version was still for flat slotted screws, which were the only type around.

Better Heads This changed in 1908, when Canadian P.L. Robertson patented the “first recess-drive type fastener practical for production usage,” a recessed square-drive screw that bears his name. Robertson screws became a standard in Canada and gained a buzz in the U.S. when the Ford Motor Company, one of Robertson’s first customers, used over seven hundred of them on each Model T. The square-drive head on Robertson screws had an advantage over slot heads because the driver was relatively easy to get situated on the head and stayed put during installation once it was there. A screw like Robertson’s became crucial as American manufacturers moved increasingly toward mass production methods. The time it took to align the driver with the slot, multiplied across thousands of workers in a factory and across hundreds, if not thousands, of screws per worker per day, became a significant loss of time and money. Additionally, the automated screwdrivers used on assembly lines often slipped out of the screws’ slots and into whatever component was being assembled or stripped the screw once

it was driven all the way. [Image credit: Saforrest] The American automobile industry was especially in need of a screws screw that could stand up to the torque of their automated drivers and be fitted and tightened quickly, but a bad break in Robertson’s past doomed him just when his invention was needed most. Dealing with dishonest parties while licensing his screw in England, Robertson wound up losing the rights to his invention and had to spend a small fortune to buy them back. When Ford, wanting to protect his assembly advantage (the screws saved his workers two hours of assembly time per vehicle), asked for a licensing agreement from Robertson so that he could manufacture and control the distribution of the screws, Robertson turned him down and he refused to allow anyone to make the screws under license. After their run on the Model T, Ford had to limit the use of the screws to his Canadian division and the widespread adoption of the Robertson screw in the U.S. fizzled and failed. Enter Portland, Oregon-based businessman Henry F. Phillips and the patent for a screw with a deep X-shaped slot, which he had purchased from friend and inventor J.P. Thompson. Phillips refined the design of the fastener, today known as a Phillips screw, for automated screwdrivers. The X-shape of the slot and pointed tip of the Phillips head screwdriver made the driver self-centering and unlikely to slip out when it wasn’t supposed to. The recessed slot was shallow enough, though, that the driver did pop out when the screw was fully tightened, which prevented over-torquing and damage to the screw, the driver and the product being assembled. The American Screw Company began mass-producing Phillips’ design. A successful trial on the 1936 Cadillac helped it proliferate through the U.S. auto industry. By 1940, 85% of the screw manufacturing companies in the U.S. had a license to produce the Phillips screw design. Usage spread from the auto manufacturers as the Phillips drive system was used during the Second World War on many wartime products and vehicles. Though originally meant for automated, industrial applications, Phillips screws and handheld screwdrivers found their way into the toolboxes of handy men and women across the country by the turn of the century. Other Ways the World Turns Most anyone who’s had to fix anything at home or put together an IKEA couch has heard of slotted and Phillips screws and maybe even hex sockets. The world of screws is vast, though, and plenty of other types of screw heads and drives exist, like the Mortorq, the Pozidriv and the Bristol. If you want a more in-depth history of screws and drivers, check out Witold Rybczynski’s One Good Turn: A Natural History of the Screwdriver and the Screw.

There are a lot of young guys around the world that don’t get a chance to grow up with a father. And because of that, may lack the knowledge of what “being a man” is. At the same time, there are young men growing up that have a father at their disposal and still don’t get valuable life lessons. It’s a shame. Bridget-Webber

Shock My father died when I was 18 years old during my senior year at high school. He had a blood clot pass in his lung. I remember the day vividly, being woken up at a friend’s house the night after my band played in some far off place. It was a beautiful, sunny, Sunday morning and I remember seeing my family members’ faces as I walked into the hospital. No one really said anything to me but I could hear from their expressions, “Everything will be OK, bud.” What happened next is a blur still to this day. I had to deal with the public viewing of my dead father, helping bury him at the funeral, a 21 gun salute, “becoming the man of the house” (or so all my relatives said), and appeasing my weakened mom in the process.

Lost What happened in the next 3 years was something that I choose to describe as being lost. I entered a phase in my life where I was in a semi-touring, semiserious band and had a terrible outlook on life. I had a problem with everything; from society to myself. I didn’t have any real friends or relationships and just “faked” my way through. I made a ton of terrible decisions, worked a crappy job and was looked down upon by my most of my family because of those terrible decisions. It was only until I decided to make a drastic change in my life that I could make up for this lost time. Some people go 20 or 30 years without having a bottom in their lives and one day look back and see the wreckage of their past. Luckily, my bottom was at 21. I’ve come to accept this and liken it to what Robert Frost wrote, “… the best way out is always through.”

Dad is My Greatest Teacher

He did his best After my period of being lost, I got very angry at my father for not being what I thought that he should have been in my life. Why did he never teach me to build a fire? Go camping? Teach me other “manly” stuff that every father teaches their son, right? It took me a while to make my way through the five stages of grief. I was at the anger stage. After talking to someone that had some more experience with death, life, and resentments I came to realize this: my father did the best he could with the tools that he had to work with. My dad never laid a hand on me or my mom, was at all of my opening nights at the theater when I was young and in plays, took me fishing (when I wasn’t being stubborn and wanted to go), wanted the absolute best for me and my mom, and later in life, indirectly taught me what it is to be a man. And for that, I can overlook the not teaching me “how to build a fire thing”.

Learning from mistakes So, what does this have to do now? Other than this article being something that I needed to write, accepting my father for who he was, has enabled me to become the man that I truly want to be because of my learning from his mistakes. Would you touch a hot stove right now? I have a feeling that if you have touched a hot stove in the past and remember the pain of being burnt, you won’t do it. It’s the same idea of learning how to be a man from my father. If the old man before me did things that were right, then hopefully I pick up those traits. And if he did things that were wrong, I sure as hell need to learn not to do those things. Learning from my dad’s mistakes has helped me develop my own, upgraded “set of tools” that I can use to do my best in life.

Teach me My dad was one of the greatest teachers I have ever met and he didn’t even try to be or know that he was. There are so many things that I have accomplished since his death that I wish I could share with him. That is the one thing that still chokes me up to this day. But, allowing to let my father live through me, I know that he is with me every step of the way; even when I’m stubborn and don’t want to go fishing. So, make sure that you understand that your dad does the best he can with the tools that he has. It’s not a father’s job to teach you how to build a fire. It’s your job to learn from him, develop your life’s tools to do your best, and live the life that you want to live.

Fire in My Belly A short story by Hanaa

Building ladders in this World for the castle in the sky, Jannah Reflective thought is utterly addictive. The mismatched colorations of my most vivid realizations and the caviler notions of my shipwrecked self are often enough to leave me consumed. As of late, I’ve been ruminating over a particular conversation. Dialogue highlighted by misplaced anxieties, a dream’s fragility and advice drenched in gold. My friend and I sat in a small coffee shop while the melodious hissing of espresso machines and overcast chattering of other customers filled the vaulted room. “You can’t have your cake and eat it too!”, she solemnly declared. “What do you mean?” I asked. I hadn’t realized that I was laughing before she retorted, “Hanaa, I’m serious!” I wasn’t entirely convinced she was as serious as she wished me to believe. She let a demure giggle escape and lightly flicked my arm. “Alright, alright,” I said, attempting to regain composure. “What cake are you talking about?” “Imagine this is a cake”, she motioned to my tea saucer. “Now imagine that this cake is called the Dunya. With me?” I smiled and affirmed. “You’re alive in this world which means you have the Dunya but you can’t eat it, because if you do, you won’t have Jannah”, she broke into a wide grin as she placed the saucer down and searched my eyes. Essentially, it all added up. I couldn’t have this world because there was something far greater awaiting me, should Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala) have mercy on me. In the midst of all my prayers and supplications, there it was: an abode of angels and prophets. “It’s either one, you know?” she attested. “Yeah, I guess so.” I intently replied. That evening, our conversation echoed through my scattered thoughts. I tried to reproduce the scenario again, wishing I could have been more assertive in my reply. It was like I was traveling through a contemplative minefield and with each

step I was never sure what conclusion would shatter me. Education, employment, family, and friends, I thought, are all Dunya. Elation, anguish, and overwhelming vivacity are all emotions I’ve experienced here, in this world. I mused over how I would rearrange my cataclysmic state of consciousness. How would I be able to reconcile the two? I lay my fingers onto my keyboard and let my thoughts infuse themselves into an email to my friend. “Subject: A Fire in My Belly”. Amidst the loving salutations, I began, “When I said that ‘I guessed so’ I should have said, yes, I have a hijab wrapped around my head. Yes, I am a Muslimah. But, I have dreams in my heart and a fire in my belly”. I achingly continued, “You see because my dreams and passion for life are for Allah and Him (subhanahu wa ta’ala) alone. The limited sweetness of this Dunya can only be found in our pursuit of the Akhira. Contentment, jubilation and the silver lining stretched across a dark and barren sky are all from Allah.” I paused, lifted my fingers from the keys they were nestled atop of and forged ahead. “I am persistently fighting for my dreams because I have a soul that is not of this Earth. Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala) created us all as unique individuals and blessed us with unique talents and abilities; all of which can be used to please Him (Azzawajal). The Dunya is intertwined with our future in the Akhira. Yes, the spatial divide is vast but how we live our lives now, in this Dunya, irrevocably matters. How we use what Allah has granted us in this world is truly how we can invest in the next life. I’m building ladders here in this Dunya. Ones that I hope will one day allow me to, bi’ithnillah, reach the castles in the sky, in Jannah. So yes, I choose to endlessly strive for my Akhira. But, I also choose to enjoy the permissible pleasantries of this world. To travel and mar-

vel at the beauty of Allah’s creations, to taste the sweetness of love and knowledge on the palate of life and to express my deepest gratitude to my Lord for each and everyday that I am alive and that He has mercifully blessed me with Islam. The fire in my belly is fury of dense emotions. It is the sentiment that says that Allah and the Akhira are never omitted from anything that I do, from my education, to my job, to my hobbies. Because in the end, “…the Hereafter is better for you than the first [life]” (93:4). I pray that Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala) grants us the best of this life and reward beyond compare in the next. Ameen. Love, Hanaa Presently, this email sits taking shelter in my drafts folder, but today I have a feeling that my friend will finally have the chance to read it. I hope that by sharing this piece the lingering sentiments that I entreated upon myself to consider that day will be planted in your own mind and can be stirred to life by the raindrops of quiet reflection. It’s your world, so what’s the fire in your belly?

We all, of course, know in which hand we hold a pen, but how far does this bias extend throughout your body? Are you left-eared? Left eyed? Here is a simple test you can apply to yourself. LEFT-HANDEDNESS TEST 1.

Imagine the centre of your back is itching. Which hand do you scratch it with?

2.

Interlock your fingers. Which thumb is uppermost?

3.

Imagine you are applauding. Start clapping your hands. Which hand is uppermost?

4.

Wink at an imaginary friend straight in front of you. Which eye does the winking?

5.

Put your hands behind your back, one holding the other. Which hand is doing the holding?

6.

Someone in front of you is shouting but you cannot hear the words. Cup your ear to hear better.

Which ear do you cup?

7.

Count to three on your fingers, using the forefinger of the other hand. Which forefinger do you use?

8.

Tilt your head over on to one shoulder. Which shoulder does it touch?

9.

Fixate a small distant object with your eyes and point directly at it with your

forefinger. Now close one eye. Now change eyes. Which eye was open when the finger

tip remained in line with the small object? (When the other eye, the non-

dominant one, is open and the dominant eye is closed, the finger will

appear to move to one side of the object.)

10.

Fold your arms. Which forearm is uppermost?

If you have always considered yourself to be right or left-handed you will probably now have discovered that your body is less than total in its devotion to its favoured side. If you are right-handed the chances are that you were not able to be 'right' 10 times.

Famous English Book Stores In Paris-France

Shakespeare&Co and Tea&Tattered Pages

Shakespeare

& Company, and Tea and Tattered Pages are two of Paris's top English bookstores. There are over 40 English bookshops in Paris, each with it's own character. Some deal in secondhand books, some exchange books, others are strictly new books, and others act as English libraries, lending books out. The most famous English bookshop in Paris is Shakespeare&co. It spreads over 2 floors and has a reading area, café and a writer's room. Browsing is encouraged as are literary discussions. The store was established in 1951, and is still run by the same family, but the history of the shop is a much more complicated plot. The store has always encouraged budding writers, including many famous authors who frequented the store. There is a writer's room, and writers without means can sleep on mattresses in amongst the books,

so long as they read a book a day. The place buzzes with energy, and the atmosphere is one of greatness in the making, as literary aficionados excitedly thrive in this academic haven. The store also offers workshops, author readings. A biannual book festival and there is a café attached. You can find Shakespeare & co at 37 rue de la Bûcherie. I absolutely love to curl up with a good book and a cup, especially if it is in a bookshop with some character. At "Tea&Tattered Pages" a second-hand English book shop you will be spoilt for "character". Take the time to find this haven which is tucked away, and you will be glad you made the effort. A visit to this store will also get you away from the tourist hub. Their books are reasonably priced, and cover a range of fiction and nonfiction subjects. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and you will be made welcome and even offered English scones, tea and carrot cake in the small tea room at the back. Like any English house there is a resident feline that suns him on the store windowsill.

He replied, ‘It was an ID ten T error.’ I didn’t want to appear stupid, but nonetheless inquired, ‘An, ID Ten T error? What’s that? "Can you tell me where you live?" Again the whisper. "246 Charles Street. The house is on fire." "Do you need the fire men as well?" "No they're already here." "Are you OK?" "Yes," came the whisper again, "well I am at the moment. Please ask the police to hurry. I'm really frightened." "Are your parents there? Are they safe?" "Yes." "Are they with you?" "No. They're searching for me with the firemen," the voice whispered again."They don't know where I am." "Why aren't you with them? Where are you?" "I'm hiding under the bed with the box of matches."

“Yes,” said the old man to his younger visitor. “I am proud of my girls and would like to see them comfortably married, and as I have made a little money they will not go penniless to their husbands. There is Mary, twenty-five years old, and a really good girl. I shall give her $1000 when she marries. Then comes Bet, who won’t see thirty-five again. I shall give her $3000 when she marries. And the man who takes Eliza, who is forty, will have $5000 with her.” The young man reflected a moment and then asked, “You haven’t one about fifty, have you?”

LANA AL-RESHEED

Director of Marketing & PR @LanaAlresheed

Gone are the days when business promotions only involved showcasing company’s goals and values by advertisements in newspapers, television and renting hoardings. Social media marketing services are the “IN” thing and services like Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube and Twitter have time and again proved to be crucial marketing tools for driving business insights and building a brand name for your product. With the introduction and booming apps in the smart phone arena, it is only a matter of seconds that positive reviews can prove to be a boost for your brand or promotion. So how do social media marketing services help you grow your business? The internet, as we know is, is a complex entity connecting millions of people spread out far and wide across the globe. Since the reach is quite large, you can instantly connect with a huge database of users, particularly a specific segment of people who are interested in your brand or service. Forums can do the trick of getting individuals together who share the same field of thought or have the same interests. A good social media strategy will ensure in improving your customer base and a good increase in your sales. Please read through the following steps that you should take to make better use of the social media tools to help your business grow: 1. Provide One-to-One Contact - The biggest thing social media marketing can do for sales are help create one-on-one relationships between customers and potential customers and the company. With the social web, people can reach out directly to people inside the company with questions and problems. 2. Increase Referrals – People are more likely to trust colleagues or peers over a company for purchasing recommendations. The social web puts people into contact with others who have already experienced a product or service. By facilitating these connections, marketing can make it easier for people to get feedback directly from other customers, increasing the chances for referrals, which usually have a higher rate of purchasing from you. 3. Increase Awareness – The first problem for sales and having customers even be aware of your products. There’s nothing worse than cold-calling a potential customer and not have them even be aware of you. Besides, we know that cold calling isn’t very effective without some sort of pre-qualification process. While generating awareness is certainly marketing’s first job, the social web makes this easier because it’s easier for people outside of the company to talk about you to each other. 4. Increase Demand – Related to increasing awareness, social media marketing can help increase demand for your products which really makes the whole sales process so much easier. If people understand what your products are and how they can help, they’re more likely to want them. 5. Educate Buyers – Educated buyers are usually much further down the sales funnel. The social web helps marketing reach out to potential customers to answer their questions and help them understand how your company can help them (and how you’re different from your competitors), making the entire sales process much easier. 6. Build Relationships – The social web helps people within your company build relationships with potential customers, as well as maintain relationships with existing customers. It’s much easier to approach a sales call if the person is already familiar with people in your company. They feel like they’re doing business with someone they know instead of a

stranger. Relationships also help salespeople understand the needs of the potential customers, which makes the sales process more effective. 7. Generate Leads – One of the most difficult parts of the sales process is generating leads for new business. While this has always been one of the major jobs of marketing, the social web makes it easier to reach a larger audience than other channels. Social media marketing can also provide a lot of direct calls to action to generate leads. 8. Pre-Qualify Leads – If done properly, social media marketing can help you engage with the right audience with the right messages and conversations. With a little work, more can be known about leads so that sales know which are more likely to purchase. 9. Provide Insight on Customer Needs – By listening and building relationships on the social web, not only can marketing provide insight in general about customer needs, they often can provide needs for specific customers. This means that salespeople aren’t going into sales calls cold. When you know something about the specific needs of the customer, you can tailor your sales call around those needs, making it more useful for everyone involved. My summer promotion for the hotel worked 75% with social media tools such as twitter & facebook !! I did great this summer and so can you ;)

The

wave of Social media awareness is becoming more and more important every day. As the number of bloggers is increasing and blogging as an activity is now trendy, we believed that the best way was to conduct proper social media 101 awareness by creating this smart challenge that started off late last month with a short kick off gathering. The whole idea started when Eng. Khalid Al-Zanki came to Kuwait with a virus called ‘Crush it Book’. The book that was the talk of the world back in 2009, by the author Gary Veynerchuck , who was embracing the fact of putting your passion online and watch it grow like crazy, So I got hold of the book , read it and felt anxious to talk to someone that would understand my words. I, then ordered more copies , and started sharing it with my social media Geek friends :) and kept following this guy’s online actions and interactions, wanting to know more. Late 2010, I said to Khalid, the time has come. This dude needs to be in Kuwait, A.S.A.P. So we started putting the ideas together on how to present him to Kuwait and share the love with others passionate about Social Media? We selected the date, and everything else started falling into place. But the bridge that would get us there has always been the Bloggers World. So, we decided to build up the Hub for this cause out of a simple Blog, that would create the engagement and awareness about the Crush it Concept. Gary Veynerchuck videos and The Crush it Challenge Call for Action towards the big Day " Crush it " seminar. We started thinking of the NOW Social media status in Kuwait and the area. We all know the role that social media plays in today’s marketing. Having direct interaction with customers is now a demand from major companies and small businesses alike. Being an expert in social media doesn’t necessarily grow along with the size of the company using it. We see companies here in Kuwait, and worldwide as well making mistakes in this field all the time. This is basically what Crush It! seminar is all about.

August - 2011

A beautiful, healthy smile is an important asset for people of all ages. When we expect the best in dental care with the latest in technology and a professional and friendly environment, we now have a place where we can find both, Dr. Yousef AlShehab and his ultra-modern, yet calm and relaxing clinic - Dental Lounge. Today dentistry has become more & more of a business. There are thousands of products and many of those are not approved by Dental Society & Dental Commissions. The survival of the dental treatment doesn’t mean the success of it. This is why Dr. Yousef always emphasizes on the personal relationship of trust to let the doctor to do the best whatever he thinks. Let me share with you my interesting conversation with Dr. Yousef at his clinic. Mohammad Altaf

Please introduce yourself to our readers? I am Dr. Yousef AlShehab, 32 years old, Dental Specialist working full time in my Dental Lounge.

Can you tell us about your education? I have completed my MSc. in Implantation and Cosmetic Dentistry from University of Warwick UK.

Did you always want to be a dentist? I decided to be a dentist when I was studying in high school. The reason is that dentistry is a mix of art and science.

Why did you choose Cosmetic Dentistry? Because in this field, you help people to smile well, this increases self-confidence in them and it also changes their life and it is always great to be a Cosmetic Dentist.

Tell us about your experience before Dental Lounge? Before starting Dental Lounge I spent five years serving in almost all the Government Dental Departments. Then I shifted my career towards the private sector. I worked for 5 years in one of the leading dental centres in Sharq Kuwait, untill the moment I decided to pursue my long life dream of opening my own private centre.

What advice would you like to give to people in general? I would love to advice the people that the relationship between a dentist and you is personal. Keep in mind that doctor is the one who is treating you and not the clinic. Relationship should be based on trust and providing the best possible dentistry experience.

Doesn’t it bother you to be in a person’s ‘face that closely? Dentistry is a noble profession even though it has turned into a business these days. Getting that closer to patient is a part pursuant of that noble profession.

As I mentioned earlier, it is a personal relationship.

Tell us about Kids Smile? What was the idea behind a specialised clinic just for kids? Looking at dentistry in Kuwait, all the dental centres are concerned with adults and Cosmetic surgery. Kids Smile was established to provide our kids with the best dental treatment in a total Children-oriented atmosphere, taking in account their needs, feelings and psychology and not turning it into a business.

Why should someone select Dental Lounge? What special care or treatment can they expect here? At Dental Lounge “We treat you as we want to be treated”. Fulfilling your needs is our priority.

Do you ever get upset at a patient that seems like they are not taking care of their teeth? Of Course, but the way I show my upset is by guiding them and advising them for their best interest. As it is a personal relationship, so it is natural to care for them.

What kind of cases do you handle regularly and what according to you is the reason for that? Dental Lounge is specialised in Implantology using the latest Evidence Base Dentistry. We also retreat a lot of failed cosmetic works. Failed Cosmetic work means to give the patients a smile that they wanted.

How do you select your team? What are your criteria? It took us long to establish our team. Besides their degrees and professionalisim,we selected the team that follows the protocols of our clinic and who really care for the patients and not for the money they make.

Your clinic is quite unusual in its layout and infrastructure. What is the idea behind this relaxed and calm environment?

Like I said before, dentistry is Evidence Based Science and the atmosphere of the clinic was build to suit the psychology and emotions of the patient. According to the evidence where the dark white atmosphere gives the patient sense of warmth and safety.

Are there any tips you would like to pass on to readers of this interview? The ideal restoration is the natural tooth and the ideal smile is the natural smile. There is no such thing as a Hollywood smile. Each Cosmetic case should be managed individually. Taken into account the patient’s needs and their satisfaction and their appearances. “Always do nothing is better than doing wrong things”. And I would like to request my professional colleagues that, “Don’t make this noble profession a business”.

Shop'n'Drop

Bringing Internation Fashion Labels to your doorsteps!!! Behind the walls of a 2 years old Shop n Drop boutique, is a 29 years young Kuwaiti fashion inspired girl, named May Waleed Al Essa. Shop n Drop is the only one of its kind boutique in Kuwait. I had the wonderful opportunity meet and interview with this down to earth gal and her passion for fashion and trend really stands out. Jameel Arif

Tell us about your education? I graduated from Kuwait University with a BA in mass communication

What inspired you to start a boutique? Not to mention the fact that I hate someone bossing me around, the other reason would be me being completely and utterly into fashion ever since fashion has triggered my instinct, thus I thought of sharing my mix and match style with the fashionable Kuwaiti girls

Every business has its own risks, but as my sister once told me, 'the higher the risk, the higher the return'. So once upon a time, I decided to be a risk taker, and thankfully I did!

Why did you not choose to be in a popular mall? Simply to get out of the mall crowds and have our customers enjoy their shopping experience casually and at their own pace.

What are your favorite designers? What made you decide to open Shop n Drop and what challenges do you face as a business owner?

Alexander Wang & Alexander McQueen. Brands exclusively from Shop n Drop, Wildfox and Daughters of the Revolution.

I really wanted to put my own stamp in Kuwait's market, therefore, Shop n Drop was established. As a business owner relying solely on word of mouth, this is the most difficult yet most effective way of advertising. Hence, I created a lovely loyal customer base.

How are the brands picked to be in Shop n Drop, and how exclusive should we expect the brands in the boutique to be?

What set your boutique apart from the others in Kuwait? Each boutique is unique in its own way. But when talking about Shop n Drop, you'll find exclusive brands, a different shopping experience, and a customer friendly atmosphere. Also, what I can guarantee is that you'll shop till you drop on your way out!

Can you give us three words that you would use to describe your boutique? In vogue, hip and dashing!

It was a total new concept. In the beginning, did you have any doubts, and if so, how did you overcome them?

Brands are handpicked by me and my sister. We visit showrooms in the U.S., from Los Angeles to New York, to get you some of our raw taste, available EXCLUSIVELY at Shop n Drop boutique.

Can you virtually walk us through Shop n Drop, what do you see? What should we expect? A flamboyant yet inviting aura with a lovely set of everything essential and trendy in store!

What are your best sellers? It all depends on the season. During summer, customers tend to grab a bunch of Popits flip flops, very comfy btw, along with Wildfox tees. During winter, sweatpants and cardis get more attention which is available by Torn and Rebel Yell.

How would you describe your personal style? One phrase would sum it all up, classy yet simple, with one statement that creates the whole outfit buzz.

What are your plans for the future? Expanding into new markets

What are some of your other interests? Let me give you a glimpse into my personality and temperament. During my spare time, I love to read books, especially by Jackie Collins. Travelling is another interest of mine. I love exploring new cultures!

How do you find balance between your business life and your home life? It's not as easy as some people think, but everything is possible if you know how to organize your life and priorities. Blame it on my horoscope I guess. Libra!

What is the key to your success? Emphasizing on the importance of customers' needs

What are some of the items that you feel as a stylist every woman should have in her closet? I believe that every woman should own a slouchy/jersey vest, as it would create a totally different outfit. The second item that would really compliment your whole outfit, is an 'it' bag! Every woman should own a classic bag that never gets outdated!

If you could give advice to women who are thinking about starting a boutique what would it be? Passion is key. "Choose a career you love and you will never have to work a day in your life"

Your message for us at CityPages? Thank you CityPages and Jameel for believing in me! Happy Ramadan and wish you years of success, locally and globally.

Parsley originated in the Eastern Mediterranean region but is now grown throughout the world. For more than 2,000 years, it has been known as a medicinal herb. The ancient Greeks valued the seeds and roots of the plant for their soothing, diuretic effect on those with kidney and bladder ailments. Today parsley is still used primarily as a diuretic. In addition, it strengthens the digestive system and helps alleviate stomach and liver problems. In folk medicine, parsley is recommended for women who have irregular menstrual periods. As a diuretic as it may also ease the bloating that some women experience before their periods. To retain parsley's flavor, chop the herb just before using and add it to hot foods at the last minute. n Avoid dried parsley, it is far less tasty and healthful than the fresh herb. n Try the flat leaf variety, also called Italian parsley, It has more nutrients and a better flavor than curly parsley. n Add parsley to compliment a dish, such as potatoes, smoked salmon, trout, poultry, pasta and vegetables. n Freeze fresh parsley to save preparation time in the kitchen. Wash, zip seal plastic bag. You can then remove the amount you need with each recipe. n To keep parsley fresh, sprinkle it with water, wrapping it in paper towels and refrigerating it in a plastic bag. Or place parsley stems in a glass of water, like a bunch or flowers, and refrigerate.

Take off the weight and bring back the memory

John Gunstad, an associate professor in Kent State University's Department of Psychology, and a team of researchers have discovered a link between weight loss and improved memory and concentration. The study shows that bariatric surgery patients exhibited improved memory function 12 weeks after their operations.

The

findings will be published in an upcoming issue of Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases, the Official Journal of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. "The initial idea came from our clinical work," Gunstad said. "I was working at Brown Medical School in Rhode Island at the time and had the chance to work with a large number of people who were looking to lose weight through either behavioral means or weight loss surgery." Gunstad said he kept noticing that these patients would make similar mistakes. "As a neuropsychologist who is focused on how the brain functions, I look for these little mental errors all the time," Gunstad explained. The research team studied 150 participants (109 bariatric surgery patients and 41 obese control subjects) at Cornell Medical College and Weill Columbia University Medical Center, both in New York City, and the Neuropsychiatric Research Institute in Fargo, N.D. Many bariatric surgery patients exhibited impaired performance on cognitive testing, according to the study's report. The researchers discovered that bariatric surgery patients demonstrated im-

proved memory and concentration 12 weeks after surgery, improving from the slightly impaired range to the normal range. "The primary motivation for looking at surgery patients is that we know they lose a lot of weight in a short amount of time, so it was a good group to study," Gunstad said. "This is the first evidence to show that by going through this surgery, individuals might improve their memory, concentration and problem solving." Gunstad thinks the study is reason for optimism. "One of the things about obesity, relative to other medical conditions, is that something can be done to fix it," Gunstad said. "Our thought was, if some of these effects are reversible, then we're really on to something -- that it might be an opportunity for individuals who have memory or concentration problems to make those things better in a short amount of time. And that's what we found." The team is following study participants for two years. They tested subjects before surgery, 12 weeks after surgery and one year after surgery, and will also test at the two-year mark. Gunstad was the principal investigator for the team, which included Gladys Strain, Ph.D., of Cornell Medical College in New York City; Michael Devlin, M.D., of Weill Columbia University Medical Center in New York City; Rena Wing, Ph.D., and Ronald Cohen, Ph.D., of the Warren Albert Medical School of Brown University in Providence, R.I.; Robert Paul, Ph.D., of the University of Missouri-St. Louis in St. Louis, Miss.; and Ross Crosby, Ph.D., and James Mitchell, M.D., of the Neuropsychiatric Research Institute in Fargo, N.D. Gunstad wasn't surprised by the study's findings. "A lot of the factors that come with obesity -- things such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and sleep apnea -- that might damage the brain are somewhat reversible," Gunstad said. "As those problems go away, memory function gets better." The team's next project will examine whether people who experience behavioral weight loss see the same effects as those who have had bariatric surgery. Gunstad said he expects to see similar results. "One of the things we know is that as individuals become more cardiovascular fit and their heart health gets better, their brain health also improves," Gunstad added. "Even if we take young adults and put them through an exercise program, their memory and their concentration get better by the end of the program." The cost for the research project was approximately $1.5 million, and was funded by a grant from the National Institute of Health.

Sedentary Lifestyle Makes you Obese Overweight and obesity have become the outcome of modern lifestyle. Obesity leads to many diseases and other problems. It can be controlled to a certain extend by changing the sitting lifestyle. According to a report from the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention, during the past 20 years there has been an alarming epidemic increase in obesity in the United States. Its report of the year 2009 says that only Colorado and the District of Columbia had a prevalence of obesity less than 20%. All over the world it is on the increase causing various fatal diseases. Sedentary lifestyle of the present era is one of the main reasons for this increase

What is sedentary lifestyle? Today modern man’s brain has to work more than his other parts of the body. That makes him more sedentary. Humanity has taken up a mode of living without much physical activity. At every stage of his life, either a child or an adult, he is more a couch potato, not involved in physical activities or exercises. Advance in technology and inventions of machineries have changed the lifestyle of modern man, making him more sedentary. The term “sedentary life” is often used by professionals or medical world to describe a lifestyle among many people in highly developed countries that does not afford them opportunities for physical activity. This type of living has been developed because of the influence of modern forms of entertainment such as television, video games, and computer programs. Along with such inactive types of entertainment, modern working style also has become more sedentary with advanced equipment and machineries.

How can sedentary lifestyle affect weight? Since sedentary lifestyle is blamed as the number one culprit in causing obesity, serious researches are going on all over the world to find out the modifiable risk factors for a changed lifestyle of weight control. Numerous studies have observed that there is a strong inverse cross-sectional relationship between BMI and a sedentary lifestyle. Body Mass Index (BMI) is a number calculated from a person’s weight and height and BMI of a person provides reliable information of body fatness that may lead to

health problems.

Impact of sedentary lifestyle on children Modern sedentary lifestyle has affected very much the health of children through their sedentary entertainment. The social and psychological issues of childhood obesity, caused mostly because this sedentary lifestyle can be seen even more intrusive on the child’s life than the physical. Childhood is a critical time for the development of self-esteem and so the psychological issues faced by an overweight child are very serious on its characters and social life. Dr. Hu Frank B., M.D., Ph.D. reports in “The Journal of American Medicine” that television watching and other sedentary lifestyle behaviors affect children and women in relation to risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus in them. Researches state that Americans, in general, seem to be more sedentary. It is suggested that children should have at least thirty minutes per day of exercise outside of school time. (The Journal of American Medicine, 2003, p. 1790) Dr. Kaur Haroshena, M.D., MPH, says in his essay title, “Duration of television watching is associated with body mass index,” that television, computers, and video games consume more and more of outside playtime and television watching is the predominant sedentary behavior in children, second only to sleeping. (Dr. Kaur Haroshena, M.D., MPH, in The Journal of Pediatrics, 2003, p. 506) Dr. Hu points out that watching television is more strongly associated with obesity than other sedentary behaviors. He states that obesity is caused by watching television since it reduces energy expenditure by limiting time that children can spend doing physical activities. Another reason he points out for weight gaining by this sedentary lifestyle is the habit of snacking. Watching television tends to the habit of eating snacks, especially with the inundation of junk food enticements. Researches of Japanese doctors Furukawa Y, Toji C, Fukui M, Kazumi T, and Date C. of Nara Women’s University reveal that even though the sedentary group subjects had lower BMIs, they had significantly higher body fat percentages. The ankle systolic blood pressure and ankle brachial index (ABI) were significantly higher in the physically active subjects. The results confirmed that the accumulation of body fat, including visceral fat, was higher in the sedentary people and, therefore, it is necessary to increase their energy expenditure by regular exercise and consume a diet that corresponds only to their dietary requirements. Dr. Deborah Young-Hyman, behavioral psychologist with the Georgia Prevention Institute, says that sedentary lifestyle, or a low amount of physical activity, influences parenting stress of the mothers. She says that stress is associated with weight and overweight has much to do in behavior changes and emotional life. In short, the impact of sedentary lifestyle on one’s body weight is really great. Sedentary lifestyle makes you ingest a lot of calories and not really burning any of them. These calories not burnt are deposited in your body as excess fat which is just the beginning of hundreds of health problems.

All the World's a Stage All the world's a stage,

Even in the cannon's mouth. And then the justice,

And all the men and women merely players;

In fair round belly with good capon lined,

They have their exits and their entrances,

With eyes severe and beard of formal cut,

And one man in his time plays many parts,

Full of wise saws and modern instances;

His acts being seven ages. At first, the infant,

And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts

Mewling and puking in the nurse's arms.

Into the lean and slippered pantaloon,

Then the whining schoolboy, with his satchel

With spectacles on nose and pouch on side;

And shining morning face, creeping like snail

His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide

Unwillingly to school. And then the lover,

For his shrunk shank, and his big manly voice,

Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad

Turning again toward childish treble, pipes

Made to his mistress' eyebrow. Then a soldier,

And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all,

Full of strange oaths and bearded like the pard,

That ends this strange eventful history,

Jealous in honor, sudden and quick in quarrel,

Is second childishness and mere oblivion,

Seeking the bubble reputation

Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.

Robert Olen Butler delivers a literary romance and a portrait of a relationship taken backwards from its breaking point to its beginning

In what amounts to a sequel to Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight, Alexandra Fuller revisits her story of survival in Africa, this time with the focus on her mother, Nicola.

Returning to the erotic content of such novels as Vox and The Fermata which put him on the literary map, Nicholson Baker imagines a world in which one's every sexually desire is easily fulfilled.

Lights Out In Wonderland

The Buddha in the Attic

The Leftovers

DBC Pierre's disaffected twenty-something protagonist has decided to end it all, but not quickly. Instead, he travels betweens between London, Tokyo, and Berlin in what he views as a terminal adventure.

In The Buddha in the Attic, Julie Otsuka portrays a group of Japanese mail order brides in San Francisco at the turn of the twentieth century.

When 100 people are raptured from a suburban enclave, those left behind - "the leftovers" - are left to deal with their abandonment issues.

THE LATEST RELEASE FROM THE LINEA COLLECTION : Chic & Automatic !

Naturally, a major change in the new Linea collection is to offer an automatic version in a generous 32 mm-diameter case, framing a snailed mother-of-pearl dial and a sapphire crystal case back which reveals an open-worked oscillating weight adorned with the Phi symbol. Loyal to its principle of interchangeability, the new Linea Automatic comes with a polished and satin-finished steel bracelet complete with triple folding security clasp, and a black satin strap delivered together in the packaging. This additional strap offer is bound to delight women everywhere.

PRESSPAGES

Should the new Linea be described as ultra-trendy? Such an epithet fails to take into account Baume & Mercier’s high standards for its timepieces. As Director of the Baume & Mercier Design Studio since 2001, Alexandre Peraldi loves to say: “Being trendy means you’re already behind. The new Linea had to be a radical innovation, and not just in terms of design. For several years now, we’ve been paying attention to women’s growing interest in automatic movements. This is hardly surprising, since such mechanisms are drawn upon fascinating expertise and are entirely in tune with a sustainable worldview. Listen to women, they’re always one movement ahead!”

And why be shy about the fact that the price superbly illustrates Baume & Mercier’s philosophy of bringing luxury watchmaking within reach? One ‘automatically’ wants to adopt it!

Considering the significance of the lunar calendar, the precise moon phase indicator is a horological achievement, especially in the Middle East with reference to the holy month of Ramadan. For the female loved ones in your life, the elegant Little Saxonia is the smallest and most feminine creation of the Saxonia family of watches, which proudly portraits Saxony’s artisanal heritage. Exquisitely tasteful yet classically understated, this jewelled creation remains true to all Lange values, whilst acting as the perfect companion for a slender female wrist. A case set with 50 brilliant-cut diamonds totalling 1.2 carats and the hand guilloched dial give it the splendour that befits such a delicately crafted masterpiece. Like the entire Saxonia collection, and all Lange timepieces, the handcrafted and beautifully finished movement can be admired through a sapphire-crystal caseback.

LG’S NEW STEAM DISHWASHER LETS CUSTOMERS SAY GOODBYE TO PREWASHING

LG Steam Dishwasher Delivers Prewash-free Performance, Greater Load Flexibility and Improved Energy Use LG Electronics (LG) will soon unveil its new steam dishwasher with TrueSteam™ technology, which delivers a powerful dishwashing performance and frees from having to prewash their dishes, saving them time and keeping their hands dry and healthy. The dishwasher’s SmartRack™ has easily adjustable tines that can accommodate a wide range of odd-sized dishes and utensils, providing enhanced flexibility and functionality, while the Inverter Direct Drive motor ensures a top-grade performance while cutting down on both water and energy usage. “Our research showed that dishwasher owners were often scrubbing the tough-to-clean dishes by hand before they started the dishwasher cycle,” said Mr. H.S. Paik, President of LG Electronics Gulf FZE. “There was an obvious need for us to produce a dishwasher that consumers could rely on to handle even the toughest, grungiest dishes, without needing to get their hands dirty through prewashing.” TrueSteam™ Keeps Hands Dry and Soft and Keeps Dishes Spotlessly Clean

TrueSteam™ works by creating high-temperature steam particles that are injected from carefully positioned pressure nozzles. Once the particles attach themselves to the grease and grime on the dishes, temperatures quickly rise to melting point, so by the time the entire cycle is finished, the dishes are spotless. Steam temperature and pressure are managed by the built-in steam generator, and the resulting particles are powerful enough to tackle the toughest, burnt on, and dried up food remains. Consumers also have the option of the Steam Care cycle for more delicate dishes without leaving so much as a scratch. Further flexibility is achieved with the Steam Dual Spray function, which enables the upper and lower racks to use independent water pressures. Customers can then run a single wash that is

tailored to multiple dish types. This also eliminates the need to waste water, energy and time by running two loads at different intensities.
