CityPages - Making Life Simple !

Dear Readers... Welcome to CityPages at this busy festive time. We have just enjoyed celebrations for Diwali, Thanksgiving and the Hijri New Year; we have also celebrated the recent success of the Kuwaiti football team; we have Christmas and the New Year in the few weeks ahead; and if all that’s not enough, we will be celebrating the anniversary of this magazine! Yes, this is our twelfth issue, and sees the completion of our first year. It seems appropriate, at this time, to thank all our supporters, advertisers, interviewees, contributors and, most importantly, our readers, who have made us so popular. CityPages is now available at even more distribution outlets and, with the addition of Columbus Coffee and Second Cup to our list, we have a presence at seven different locations within Kuwait University alone and are now the most widely distributed magazine within Kuwait within our first year! This month we have continued to source some interesting interviews of local and international talent, and will introduce you to Farah Behbehani, a Kuwaiti calligraphist who is making Kuwait proud and achieving both local and international acclaim; to Khalid Qarawi, a young marketing professional at Zain; to Swedish singer Jasmine Kara; and to Lewis Chapman, an English painter and artist in Kuwait who shares his experiences through his work. In celebration of the Christmas season, we take a look at popular Christmas music and some other western European traditions. Our next issue will of course be celebrating entry into another New Year, but will also be a major celebration of our first birthday, and we’re already getting quite excited about it. We wish you the very best greetings of the season from all of us at CityPages, and hope you enjoy the celebrations. Happy Reading!

nyone who thinks that print is dead clearly hasn’t been keeping tabs on Graydon Carter. Hailed by Oscar-winning producer Brian Grazer as “the king of New York,” this modern-day dandy has been taking the world by storm since 1992, when he was named editor ofVanity Fair. He has since guided the glossy magazine to 11 National Magazine Awards while increasing its advertising pages by a staggering 60%. While other glossies are thinning their pages, Carter pursues stories other magazines don't have the resources and dedication to tackle, such as the ongoing "Madoff Chronicles" of 2009, which exposed the details of Bernie Madoff's $65 billion Ponzi scheme. And then there was "The Temptation of Tiger Woods" in May of 2010, in which the magazine spoke to and photographed four of Woods' former mistresses, all the while piecing together the tragic downfall of a one-time legend.

10 Graydon Carter

Of course, Carter’s influence isn’t just limited to his revered publication. This flamboyant polymath has also produced a handful of critically acclaimed documentaries over the years, including Chicago 10,Surfwise, Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, The Kid Stays in the Picture, and 9/11, for which he won an Emmy and a Peabody Award. He’s also the owner of the Waverly Inn and the Monkey Bar, a pair of tremendously chic New York City restaurants that have become a home away from home for the city’s top movers and shakers. Add it all up and it’s clear that Graydon Carter has become every bit as famous as the celebrities he profiles in his delectably cultivated magazine.

ose Mourinho may just be the most polarizing figure in a sport full of them. But he’s also one of the most successful. Known around the world as “The Special One” (a nickname he gave himself, by the way), the Portuguese tactician is the most famous football coach in the world, and has been hopping from top club to top club in an attempt to see just how many championships he can win. So far so good. After winning a momentous Champions League title with FC Porto in 2004, and bringing the Premier League’s Chelsea to similar glory in following years, Mourinho capped his 2010 by leading a star-studded Inter Milan to the first treble -- the Serie A title, the Coppa Italia and the Champions League title (with a stifling win over Bayern Munich) -- in Italy’s history. But in true Mourinho fashion, the charismatic manager needed a new challenge, and fled to Real Madrid for a record-breaking financial package. Despite Real Madrid’s early-season struggles, Mourinho is too talented a manager, and too fiery a personality, to let his club watch idly as their rivals pass them by. Expect Real Madrid to compete for a title, and expect the impeccably dressed Mourinho to lead them there.

lon Musk is only one romance with Gwyneth Paltrow and an expensive superhero costume away from becoming Tony Stark's real-life alter ego. Mentioned by Iron Man 2 director Jon Favreau as a key source of inspiration, Musk remains one of pop culture's wealthiest and most fascinatingly diverse entrepreneurs. Having already drastically changed the way we pay for things online by cofounding PayPal, he's now steadfast in his quest to shape which cars we drive and which planets we live on. The founding visionary behind Tesla Motors, Elon Musk was named 2010's Automotive Executive of the Year for his role in developing modern electric vehicles like the newly announced Mercedes A-Class, Toyota RAV4 EV crossover SUV and Tesla's staple electric sports car, the Tesla Roadster. With over 25 countries and counting receiving the cars, Musk is already bringing automotive electricity across international borders in advance of a bigger push in 2012.

Elon Musk

If all else fails on Earth, he'll just send us to another planet through his space transportation business, SpaceX, which recently completed its debut space shuttle, Dragon. For his trouble, Elon Musk earned more thanks this year from the Kitty Hawk Foundation as a Living Legend in Aviation. Is there anything he can't do? In a word… no.

TIAL MEN OF 2010 J

ames Franco is the rarest of movie stars, in that he’s not just a movie star. Whereas many leading men are content to rest on the laurels of fame and fortune, Franco is a cultural sponge, eager to learn, absorb, create, and challenge conventions. Much was made of Franco’s enrollment at Columbia University, but that was nothing. The talented thespian has since enrolled in four -- count 'em! -- graduate programs, written a book of short stories, guest-starred on General Hospital (a stunt he dubbed “performance art”), and made a series of experimental short films that have been setting the New York art world ablaze. Franco doesn’t just dabble in side projects; he immerses himself in them.

James Franco has been characterized by his superhuman ability to focus, an ability that’s allowed him to pursue other passions while maintaining one of the hottest careers in Hollywood. Catch him later this year as real-life doomed daredevil Aron Ralston in Danny Boyle’s buzzed-about 127 Hours, and as king of the beatniks, Allen Ginsberg, in Howl. Since noticing him on Judd Apatow’s gone-too-soon Freaks and Geeks, we always knew he was more than just another actor with a square jawline and a crooked smile. Thanks for proving us right, James.

quick glance at Drew Brees’ trading card can tell you plenty of things. It can tell you he’s 6’0” and weighs 209 pounds, and that he completed 70.6% of his passes last season while throwing for 4,388 yards. It can even tell you that he’s twice led the NFL in touchdown completions. But it can’t tell you just how much he’s meant to the Big Easy since arriving in 2006. Hailed by some as “the patron saint of New Orleans,” this three-time NFC Offensive Player of the Year has quietly gone about rebuilding his adopted city following the devastation brought on by Hurricane Katrina. In the last four years alone, he has constructed homes with Habitat for Humanity, financed countless ball fields and playgrounds, generated desperately needed funds for local hospitals, and raised close to $4 million for the city’s children through his Brees Dream Foundation. Drew Brees saved his greatest civic contribution of all for February 7, 2010, when he guided the Saints to their first Super Bowl title in franchise history. The victory helped the city’s residents take their minds off their troubled past while giving them hope for a more prosperous future. The NFL chose to acknowledge his stellar play by naming Brees the game’s MVP, but the award was secondary for a beloved Saint who’s been all but canonized by his adoring fans in N’awlins.

ndy Warhol used to advise, "Don’t pay any attention to what they write about you. Just measure it in inches." Kanye West would need more than a ruler to measure the stories he’s generated in a year. Flashback to the 2009 VMAs: His annus horribilis is launched by his eye-popping stage invasion during Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech. Reaction is just as swift: his Fame Kills tour with Lady Gagais canceled, his Pastelle Clothing line folds before it's even launched, and then, for laughs, he’s sued by a rapper named Vincent Peters, who claims West stole the song "Stronger." And when President Obamatakes time out from juggling a cratering economy, health care and Al-Qaeda to call you a “jackass,” you’ve got PR issues, son. So West opened his 2010 campaign for redemption with a 10-month LollApologia campaign on Twitter. He gushed out mea culpas to Swift from every rooftop; of course, being Kanye, he also said he “bled hard” during that time, even receiving death threats. Then it was time to send out bright flashes of why the music industry -and pop culture in general -- need him. West launched his G.O.O.D. Fridays initiative, releasing a song per week to fans. His upcoming album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy will feature collaborations with Jay-Z, Beyonce and Bon Iver singer Justin Vernon, and one with Justin Bieber could be next. In September, he stormed SNL with a bravura live performance that was visionary vintage Kanye: Upending 30 years of SNL tradition, an all-white stage set off his red leather outfit and concealed 30 ballet dancers. It was even consistent with his year’s theme -- he dropped the verse telling the SNL cast to “kiss my whole ass.'” Flash-forward to the 2010 VMAs: Swift forgives him in a song called "Innocent"; Kanye disses himself in one called "Runaway" (for which he also made a controversial 34-minute music video about rising from the ashes, starring former Victoria's Secret Angel Selita Ebanks). They perform separately, but Kanye has a standing offer on the table: He’s written a song for the country-pop princess. Now there’s a duet we’d pay "Gold Digger" bucks to see.

t’s next to impossible to walk through the streets of any major metropolis, through its cafes, office buildings and classrooms, and not be flooded with a sea of iPhones, iPods, iPads, and MacBooks. There we sit, immersed in extensions of our digital selves, tapping, pinching and typing our way to a better understanding of ourselves and the world around us. This is the legacy of Steve Jobs, Apple’s visionary cofounder and CEO.

4

But Jobs hasn’t only revolutionized the electronics industry, he’s also changed the way we consume content. His wildly successful iTunes Store has given Hollywood an outlet to shop its product to online users without having to succumb to the claws of piracy. The iPad’s approach to content management has been hailed as the death knell for all things print. Apple product introduction events -- which feature Jobs in his classic black turtleneck and daddy dungarees -- are as highly anticipated as a Hollywood blockbuster. The introduction of the iPhone 4earlier this year inspired more fandemonium than the world’s greatest rock stars. When speculation of Jobs’ poor health arose last year, techies everywhere collectively held their breath and prayed for a miracle. Well, guess what: The bespectacled one is still around, and both he and his creations aren’t going anywhere.

STEVE JOBS

H

e’s 26 years old, the founder of the world’s largest social network and just passed Steve Jobs and Rupert Murdoch to become the 35th richest person on the Forbes 400 list. So why is Facebook’s CEO,Mark Zuckerberg, so down? It probably has something to do with the release of David Fincher’s zeitgeist-defining film, The Social Network, which is a sordid examination of the creation of Facebook. In the film -- already a front-runner to snag Best Picture at the upcoming Academy Awards -Zuckerberg is portrayed by Jesse Eisenberg as a backstabbing, scheming narcissist, obsessed with his own legacy. He’s the smartest guy in the room, and he certainly acts like it. But that’s Hollywood’s version of Zuckerberg, and it’s a far cry from the socially awkward boy wonder who just donated $100 million to the Newark, New Jersey Public School System, a move most likely designed as an effort to subdue the avalanche of bad publicity that has suffocated Zuckerberg since the release of the film. Ironically, we may never truly know the real Mark Zuckerberg, the man who made a fortune on the depersonalization of our personal lives. Despite his negative portrayal in the media, there’s no denying the profound effect his brainchild has had on all our lives. We would go into greater detail, but we have a friend request to accept.

MARK ZUCKERBERG I

n 2009, it was reported that Bill Gates lost close to $18 billion, and still he retained his top position on the Forbes 400 as the richest man in the world. With a net worth somewhere in the $40 billion range, we take it Gates didn’t feel the credit crunch like the rest of us.

2

In fact, 2010 saw the Microsoft founder do anything but save. No longer involved in the day-to-day duties of his software empire, Gates has embraced his second career as a philanthropist. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is currently the largest transparently operated private foundation in the world, and it’s spearheaded by Gates’ unflinching commitment to ending poverty in developing countries and improving education in the United States.

BILL GATES 12

www.citypageskuwait.com

The foundation is also committed to curing many of the world’s most fatal diseases, and got a huge boost when fellow billionaire Warren Buffett contributed $31 billion in 2006. Since then, Gates and Buffett have formed The Giving Pledge, an organization dedicated to inviting the wealthiest Americans to "commit to giving the majority of their wealth to philanthropy." Gates and Buffett have even traveled to China to speak with a few dozen of the country's richest citizens to spread the world overseas. In theory, it would be easy to hate a man with that much money, especially if he spent his days on a yacht in the Riviera banging models. Instead, Bill Gates offsets his bloated title as one of the world’s richest men by being its most generous.

1 JON STEWART W

hile the U.S. wages war in the Middle East, Jon Stewart has been fighting his own brand of war in the vicious battleground of cable television, leading the charge of personalities and ideals against the behemoth, ultra-right American news media. Stewart may host his ever-popular The Daily Show from behind a desk, but make no mistake: He’s on the front lines, and it’s getting ugly. This year -- as in years past -- there was no shortage of targets, from mainstays like Bill O’Reilly, Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin to a swath of newcomers including disgraced anchor Rick Sanchez, Christine O’Donnell, the emerging Tea Party movement, and all the critics who alleged that, behind closed doors, Stewart’s show was nothing but a sexist boys' club (they were wrong, by the way). And despite being anObama supporter himself, Stewart is the first to blow the whistle on the president's shortcomings when the leader doesn't live up to his "Yes we can" expectations. Left-wing or right-wing, no one is off-limits to Stewart. Despite his innumerable enemies, Stewart’s acerbic take on the madness around him continues to draw audiences who look to the funnyman as a voice of reason. Stewart’s show was once dubbed the “fake news,” but these days it's become our youths' most trusted source of information, and its host the most trusted man in America. If Jon Stewart ever decides to run for president, he sure as hell has our vote. But he has no plans to do so. "If I really wanted to change things, I'd run for office," Stewart has said in the past. "I haven't considered that, and I wouldn't -- because this is what I do well. The more I move away from comedy, the less competent I become." We couldn't disagree more. If the well over 100,000 Americans who plan to attend Stewart's upcoming Rally to Restore Sanity are any indication, we argue that the comedian does a better job shaping politics simply by working outside of the political sphere. Stewart is describing the event, which will take place on October 30th in Washington, as "a rally for the people who've been too busy to go to rallies." In other words, it's a rally for the average American who has no voice in right-wing American media. Going head-to-head with friend Stephen Colbert's satirical "March to Keep Fear Alive," which is happening at the same time in the same place, might make this the biggest event in Washington since that "Yes we can" guy got elected president. Further proof of Stewart's political power? His rally has the support of the president himself. "I was amused," said Obama during a recent speech in Arlington, "Jon Stewart, you know, the host of The Daily Show, apparently he's going to host a rally... And his point was 70% of the people -- it doesn't matter what political affiliation -- 70% of folks are just like you. They go about their business. They work hard every day... They may not be following every single issue, because they just don't have time. But they are just expecting some common sense and some courtesy in how people interact. And having those voices lifted up is really important." Not bad for a guy who hosts the "fake news."

Humans Can See Into the Future A New Study Proves

In the movie Minority Report, a small number of people have the ability to see into the future – with terrifying consequences. You may already know this, but psychic powers might really exist. Research suggests that far from being a trick employed by fairground fortune tellers, many of us are blessed with the ability to see into the future. Influencing events before they happen is also within our remit, the study by a respected psychologist found. The publication of the results in a leading social science journal will make waves in the staid world of science, where terms like clairvoyance, telepathy and ESP are dirty words. They will also spark a million conversations about the significance of everyday occurrences, such as knowing who is at the end of the phone before picking it up. Daryl Bem, a physicist and part-time magicianturned-psychologist, set out to investigate psi, or parapsychology to you and me. In one experiment, students were shown a list of words to memorise. They were later asked to recall as many as they could and finally they were given a random selection of the words to type out. Not surprisingly, they were better at remembering some words than others. But spookily, these tended to be the words they would later be asked to type, suggesting a future event had affected their ability to remember. In another experiment, the students were shown an image of two curtains on a computer screen and told one concealed an erotic picture. The students chose the curtain hiding the naughty picture slightly more often than could be explained away by chance, this week’s New Scientist reports. Importantly, the position of the picture was randomly allotted by a computer which didn’t make its decision until after the volunteer chose one curtain or the other. To believers in the paranormal, this suggests the students were actually influencing future events. In a third study, the students were shown a picture of a tempting-looking basket of fruit or a menacing pit bull terrier and timed while they rated the image as pleasant or unpleasant. 14

www.citypageskuwait.com

After making their choice, they were shown a word such as luscious or menacing.

At least one sceptic who has read the research is willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Amazingly, the words shown seemed to affect their reaction time, despite them being flashed up after they’d rated the picture.

Joachim Krueger, a US psychologist, said: ‘My personal view is that this is ridiculous and can’t be true.

This suggests that they had had a premonition of the word and the thought of a menacing basket of fruit had slowed them down, compared to the mental image of a menacing dog.

‘Going over the methodology and experimental design is the first line of attack. But, frankly, everything seemed to be in good order.’

In other words, they were able to see into the future.

The proof of the pudding, says New Scientist, will be in whether other scientists can repeat the professor’s success.

Professor Bem, of Cornell University in New York State, carried out nine different experiments involving more than 1,000 volunteers. All but one came down on the side of the psychics.

Once has already tried to prove him wrong, by carrying out a failed attempt to repeat the word recall experiment using an online survey.

The odds against the combined result being down to mere chance or being a statistical fluke are 74billion to one, says the professor, who has a plea for the science world to open its mind to the possibility of the paranormal.

But Professor Bem, who has a reputation for careful work, says that allowing the students to work online rather than taking them into the lab could have simply meant they weren’t concentrating hard enough.

Sinterklaas A Dutch Tradition Paul Tunbridge It wasn’t too many years ago that I had moved from England to work in The Netherlands, and I can well remember how magical it had seemed in the run up to Christmas. Having been witness to the increased commercialism of the season back in the UK, it seemed as though simply being in Holland had returned me to my childhood years as I suddenly felt that Christmas had, once again, become an exciting and wonderful time.

old bishop, with a long white beard, a mitre, a red gown and a long staff. In this apparel, the bishop is reputed to ride on top of the roofs on a white horse. He is accompanied by one or more black men, who are all named Zwarte Piet. I can recall how Sinterklaas and a troop of Zwarte Pieten toured around the office building in which I worked, throwing handfuls of sweets into each individual office for those seated inside!

On 5th December, the Dutch traditionally celebrate Sinterklaas. The children are told about a very old Spanish bishop called Sinterklaas, who is fond of children. This Iberian prelate visits the Low Lands every year by the end of November and leaves quietly after December 5th.

When riding on the roofs Sinterklaas and his black servant throw presents into the chimneys and children who put their shoes in front of the stove will find their footwear in the morning filled with sweets and other presents. Needless to say that Sinterklaas encounters considerable difficulties in managing this feat in this age of central heating.

The name Sinterklaas comes from Sint Niklaas, which is a variation of Sint Nikolaas (Saint Nicholas). On the evening of 5 December the children sing special Sinterklaas songs. When the tension has built up sufficiently, a big sack or basket is brought into the home filled with presents for the children who have behaved themselves. Needless to say that all this is organized by the parents, who occasionally even go as far as hiring a person disguised as the mythical bishop to visit their homes. A less elaborate performance is sometimes made by an aunt, uncle, neighbour or other adult accomplice, who will stick a black-gloved hand around the door in order to throw sweets on the floor. The children are usually too busy picking up the sweets to notice the deception. Sinterklaas is supposed to look like a very 16

www.citypageskuwait.com

Quite a few Dutch cities organize a Sinterklaas Arrival. Traditionally, Sinterklaas arrives by boat accompanied by a host of Zwarte Pieten, but I also saw him arrive in some town squares on horseback. Needless to say that these events are heavily sponsored by toyshops and

other local traders. Grown-ups sometimes celebrate Sinterklaas as well, but in a different way from the children: adults make rhymes for each other in which the other person is the subject, if not to say: the victim. Often less favourable habits of the victim are dealt with in a humorous way. Since the old bishop only brings presents for those who believe in him, the grown ups buy presents for each other, which are usually packed in home-made contraptions, frequently made of cardboard, which they call a "surprise" (pronounced in ze French vay).

World

Day

John MacArthur

San Francisco has always had a reputation for the avant-garde. Lively and cosmopolitan, it attracted those who push the alternative lifestyle envelope. In the Sixties, Haight Ashbury was home to the hippies with their free love, rock music, beads and marijuana. In the Seventies, the gay community flourished unmolested in the warm Californian sun. As the new decade began, a creeping chill, a dark, grey cloud rolled in like a malevolent avenger over the city. People – mostly gay men - began to die in strange, incomprehensible ways, as if their bodies had given up the will to fight infection. Fundamentalists in grey suits trumpeted from their pulpits the message that the judgment of God was falling on those whose lifestyles were not consonant with their own. As the plague spread, the world began to tremble.

Caught, flat-footed and impotent, Governments around the world began education programs which for sheer terror factor outdid the antismoking campaigns. Yet, it must be said, many were misguided, ill-informed and sometimes plain wrong. The finest minds in the world began their investigations. In 1981, the first cases of AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) were identified among gay men in the United States, acquiring the designation, GRID (Gay-Related Immune Deficiency); however, evidence was later found that the disease had probablyexisted undetected in the world for many years. Analysis of a blood sample of a Bantu man, who died of an unidentified illness in the Belgian Congo in 1959, made him the first confirmed case of an HIV infection. As people began to ask “Where did HIV come from?” - answers slowly emerged. Both of the AIDS viruses, HIV-1 and HIV-2 it now seems originated in Africa. Viruses arepathologically selfish and exploit new possibilities for transmission callously and without mercy, thus a jump from one species to another was probably to blame... chimpanzees 18

(for HIV-1) and sooty mangabeys (for HIV-2). The leap to homo sapiens from an infected monkey bite, perhaps, seemed reasonable. At first, the epidemic was thought of as a localised phenomenon in California, caused by the ease of transmission by a gay lifestyle. In reality, the Big Bang seems to have occurred around, or just after, the Second World War. Emerging microbial infections often result from adaption to changing ecological niches and habitats. Cases of pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP, a lung infection) and Kaposi's sarcoma (a rare skin cancer) were reported by doctors in New York and Los Angeles in 1981, then the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) began tracking a growing population of young men, women, and babies, whose immune systems were nearly destroyed. Late in 1982, the condition began to be referred to as AIDS. Dr. Luc Montagnier of the Pasteur Institute in France announced the isolation of the LAV retrovirus (lymphadenopathy-associated virus) in 1983, which later was identified as the cause of AIDS. Meanwhile, the rich and famous began to succumb. Rock Hudson, the‘60’s film star who reportedly turned down Charlton Heston’s role in ‘Ben Hur’ died in 1985, the flamboyant pianist Liberace in 1987and Freddie Mercury, Queen’s lead singer in 1991. Makgatho Mandela the lawyer son of Nelson Mandela died in 2005 in Africa, where two-thirds of the world’s new cases are reported annually. Mandela himself said that declaring that his son had ‘died of AIDS … was the only way to turn the tide and make HIV/AIDS an ordinary disease like any other’. AIDS is complex, cunning, baffling and powerful. Any secondary condition, symptom, or other disorder caused by an AIDS weakened immune system is a complication of AIDS, so that any number of opportunistic infections can take advantage of that weakness. It became clear that the disease, unpalatable though it might be, like

testicular cancer or Down’s syndrome wasn’t just ‘going to go away’, no matter how assiduously it was ignored. Since the early 1980’s throughout the world, education programs and initiatives have sought to destigmatise the disease, removing from it the camouflage of misunderstanding, prejudice and judgmentalism that so characterized its early appearance. In the early days, this was much helped both in the UK and worldwide by the iconic Princess Diana, who, much to everyone’s astonishment and admiration, actually touched a ravaged, emaciated AIDS sufferer. AIDS has killed more than 25 million people between 1981 and 2009 when the most reliable statistics became available, and an estimated 33.2 million people worldwide live with HIV as of 2009, making it one of the most destructive epidemics in recorded history. Despite recent, improved access to antiretroviral treatment and care in many regions of the world, the AIDS epidemic claimed an estimated 2 million lives in 2007, of which about 270,000 were children. Twelve years ago, on December 1st, the first World AIDS day was commemorated, having been birthed by two public information officers for the Global Programme on AIDS at the World Health Organization in Geneva. It is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic and spreading a message of hope and optimism to the world. Customarily, memorials are held and funds raised through charitable initiatives worldwide. Each year, the President of the United States makes a proclamation and the Pope sends a greeting to patients and medical staff. I could not bring the message home with more clarity than the following, reproduced in full. Statement for World AIDS Day, 1 December 2010 by Michel Sidibé, Executive Director of UNAIDS and

Under Secretary-General of the United Nations.(Public domain) On this World AIDS Day we can be proud. Globally we have reduced the number of new HIV infections and deaths by nearly 20%. This means less people are becoming infected with HIV and less people are dying from AIDS. 56 countries have either stabilized or significantly reduced the rate of new HIV infections. For the first time, we have broken the trajectory of the AIDS epidemic and reached the first part of the Millennium Development Goal for HIV. We have achieved this amazing milestone because families, communities, governments—and UNAIDS have united the world in an unprecedented movement. We are prevailing…with political commitment, leadership from all sectors including leaders of faith… with science, with evidence, with human rights, and passion. On this World AIDS Day we can remember. Our successes have not come without sacrifice. Today we mourn friends and family—some 30 million people who have lost their lives to AIDS. An estimated 10 million people are waiting for treatment. We must remember that punitive laws and stigma still hurt too many people around the world. On this World AIDS Day we can commit. Our hard-won gains are fragile—so our commitment to the AIDS response must remain strong. AIDS is a proven investment and must be a shared responsibility today and tomorrow. On this World AIDS Day we can be hopeful. With your commitment and that of UNAIDS and the UN family, we are changing the course of the AIDS epidemic. I have called for the virtual elimination of mother-to-child transmission by 2015.Nothing gives me more hope than knowing that an AIDS free generation is possible in our lifetime. So on this World AIDS Day, take action today—together we can reach Zero new infections. Zero discrimination. Zero AIDS-related deaths. In low and middle-income countries, less than half of those in need of antiretroviral therapy are receiving it, and too many do not have access to adequate care services. This can be changed. With determination, initiative and cash, proper therapy and healthcare - now perceived as a basic human right can be made available to all who need it, regardless of status, wealth or location. The red ribbon is an international symbol of AIDS awareness that is worn particularly around World AIDS Day to demonstrate care and concern about HIV and AIDS, and to remind others of the need for their support and commitment. The red ribbon started as a "grass roots" effort; consequently there is no one official AIDS ribbon manufacturer, and many people make their own. Why not join in this year? Make your own – it’s a statement that you’re a believer in human freedoms and part of the human family. If we could all bring ourselves to join hands and work together, we can succeed.

s it just me or is anyone else slightly ticked off at the relentless pursuit to remove the word 'Christ' from Christmas? Merry Xmas, Happy Holidays - do excuse me, but its Merry Christmas, and has been so for some time, if you'll pardon the logical fallacy. It does seem to be rather narrow and feeble to suggest that political correctness dictate how a particular day known all over the world should be relabelled so as not to offend. Offend whom, I wonder? I really can’t imagine who might possibly be genuinely offended; in my experience those of other faiths celebrate as enthusiastically as Christendom at the time of the winter holiday. My son wrote me from New York the other day, from where 'Happy Holidays' appears de rigueur. When I was a child, this kind of remark was passed by waving neighbours as the car, loaded with luggage, set off, wheezing precariously, onits annual pilgrimage to Bournemouth – a rather jolly town on the south coast of England to where we travelled on non-motorway roads for a fortnight by the seaside every year. I used to wonder whether we'd ever get there and frequently demanded to know how much further it was, usually within five minutes of leaving home. So, being something of an educator, the temptation is too good to miss to provide readers with a short Christmas tutorial. It's perfectly true to assert as many do that we've lost sight of 'the true meaning' of Christmas - whatever that is. Myth, fable, storytelling and general exaggeration have clothed the Christmas season in wild, fanciful and thoroughly entertaining apparel. The date is subjective and convenient, roughly coinciding as it does with the winter solstice, from the Latin meaning ‘the sun stands still’ and the Roman Saturnalia, when slaves and free exchanged roles, briefly, and rioting broke out after successive emperors tried to shorten celebrations from a week to five or even three days. Evergreens and mistletoe are remnants of pagan fertility rites, as is the concept of bringing trees as symbols of everlasting life into the sitting room - always a problem in centrally heated homes. It’s also thought that the tree is brought inside out of the pagan cold. The practice appears to have originated in Germany where trees were decorated with ornaments for a Druid festival, legend having it that Albert of Saxe-Coburg introduced the idea to Queen Victoria, who rather liked it and subjected an entire nation to weeping pine needles all over sitting room floors. Martin Luther gets the credit for allegedly being the first to decorate evergreen

trees with candles representing the light of Christ, fire hazards notwithstanding. The tree itself symbolises everlasting life, its form points like an arrow to the heavens, and circular evergreen wreaths represent eternity and brings to mind the crown of thorns. And so on and so forth. Now to Santa Claus, or, if you prefer, Saint Nicholas -via the Dutch Sinterklaas. Nicholas is the patron saint of Amsterdam and was the Bishop of Myra which is now in modern Turkey. Born around 280 CE into a wealthy family, he became the patron saint of children because of stories that revolved around his generosity toward them. One story appears to have led to the practice of hanging stockings for Christmas. Nicholas knew of a man with three daughters nearing marriageable age. Knowing they would be forced into poor marriages by their lack of dowry, Nicholas sneaked by their house at night and threw a bag of gold through the window for each girl. The gold is said to have landed in the girls’ stockings where they were hanging to dry. We assume the weather to have been sufficiently mild for the shutters to have been left open and Nick had been practising with a basketball. All the additional paraphernalia about reindeer and chimneys arises out of an anonymous poem, published in America in 1823, where on Christmas Eve night, while his wife and children sleep, a man awakens, hearing strange noises outside his house. Looking out the window, he sees St. Nicholas in a sleigh pulled by eight reindeer. Flying on to the roof, the saint enters the house through the chimney, carrying a sack of toys with him. The man watches Nicholas filling the children's stockings which were hanging by the fire, and, overlooking the law of trespass, laughs to himself. They share a conspiratorial moment before the saint flies away up the chimney again. On leaving, Nicholas wishes everyone a happy Christmas. As a child – I was quite an odd kid – I used to attempt to calculate how long Santa Claus would have to spend at each chimney in order to deliver presents to everyone in the world and worried endlessly about the logistical delivery problems in apartment blocks. Ebenezer Scrooge is quite a hero, I think.I read the Dickens novel as a child, suffering endless annual disappointments that it didn’t start to gently snow on Christmas Eve.I continue to be surprised at our ongoing fascination with 'A Christmas Carol', and most particularly with Ebenezer Scrooge who was visited by the three Ghosts of Christmas and turned out to be a thoroughly nice chap after all. As those who know me can attest, Christmastime for me resurrects 'Bah!' and 'Humbug' back into my vocabulary, which as everyone knows equally well, is just smoke and mirrors, disguising the fact that I detest the Santa hats, beery bonhomie, false gaiety (am I still allowed to use that word) and generally hollow merrymaking that seems to clothe the season. I have the kind of face that my kindlier friends describe as ‘lived in’ and the sight of me wearing a lopsided green paper hat, with eyes bulging from effort, blowing a squeaker over Christmas lunch tends to frighten small children and those of a nervous disposition. But, we seem hard-wired as a species to celebrate, and, in midwinter, when the sun is low in the sky and the nights arecold, gathering together is warm, comfortable and reassuring. Have a good one this year. Whatever you call it.

EVERYTHING YOU LEARNED AT SCHOOL... BUT CAN YOU REMEMBER? Why is a 10-watt bulb known as a zero bulb?

Technically, it is not possible to light an electric bulb without drawing input greater than zero watts... Zero watts is actually not zero, but refers to the minimum wattage. The inaccurate electric meters of the early days could not measure such a negligible amount of consumption as during those days, the watt hour meter had a rotating disc and when all the other lights were switched off, the disc would have only minimum rotation, which would not record even a 10W consumption. This led to the origin of the term ‘zero-watt', though it is incorrect. Nowadays, electric meters can record even electricity used as indicators in switches.

Umbrella brands are brand names utilized by a range of different but related products. Sometimes referred to as family branding, the idea behind this type of approach is to enhance the marketability of all the products that carry the same name, thus building an increased rapport with consumers. Because of this, the manufacturer can introduce new products related to the existing product lines, and immediately attract customers who routinely use other products sold under the brand. The best Indian example is Amul - butter, cheese, milk, ice cream, chocolates etc.

Aunt is a term used to describe an uneducated or unsophisticated investor who is new and unfamiliar with investing, which makes him prone to poor investment choices. It has a derogatory connotation in the financial sector. Aunt Millie is used with reference to a low-risk investment offered to first-time, inexperienced investors.

The littoral zone is that part of the river or sea which is closest to the shore. It extends from the shoreline to 600 feet (183 metres) out into the water and is divided into three zones called supralittoral, intertidal and sublittoral. The zone is a tricky area when it comes to predicting water conditions because so many factors affect it. Coastal currents, onshore and offshore winds, reefs, bays and the share of the shoreline are some of the things sailors have to deal with when passing through this zone.

Design and Art, Sets her Apart Jameel Arif

Ask for her signature and receive art, such is the talent of one creative woman, Farah Behbehani, who wields a calligrapher pen with the same passion and precision as a swordsman. Moreover, her graphic design skills stand testament to a vivid imagination. She enjoys her position as a freelance graphic designer, specializing in print and editorial design. Her creative brilliance can be perceived in her first published book which she had illustrated and designed, The Conference of the Birds, based on a 12th Century Sufi allegorical poem. The woman has a reputation that precedes her, as an apprentice of renowned calligrapher Khaled Al-Saai and as an innovator, melding the tradition style of Arabic Calligraphy with an elegant, modern approach. She has exhibited her work at HausDerKunst in Munich in September 2010 as part of ‘The Future of Tradition / Tradition of the Future’ exhibition, aimed at commemorating the biggest exhibition of Islamic art in Germany in 1910. In February 2009, she was invited to display her illustrations from The Conference of the Birds series at The Arabesque: Arts of the Arab World Festival at the Kennedy Centre in Washington D.C. However, she maintains that the stepping-stonein her career was the thesis work in pursuit of her MA degree at the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, London. It was at this point in her life, she was inspired to design a book that would celebrate her two biggest influences, her Eastern culture and western experiences. In her writing, one can see into her soul, a vibrant and exciting woman who aims to communicate through exquisite art and design. This journalist was enchanted with the ardency she displayed for her craft when she sat across Farah in an exclusive interview.

When did Arabic Calligraphy first spark your interest? I wanted to design a book that would appeal to an international audience as well as celebrate my cultural heritage. In August 2006, I was visiting Kuwait’s Free Atelier where I had the privilege of meeting notable calligrapher Khaled Al-Saai. I knew very little of Arabic calligraphy at the time, but was attracted to its perpetual beauty and amazing symmetry. Moreover, I loved that it was so rooted in Islamic history and tradition, and I began taking 24

classes with him with from the first day we met. What was the most challenging part of learning Calligraphy? I had less than 9 months to complete my thesis work. As I had no prior experience in Arabic calligraphy, it was a great undertaking for me to complete my book and illustrations in such a short period of time. In order to be able to write one word, I had to practice with a reed pen and ink for many hours a day, often writing a word 30 or forty times until the curves were just perfect. I am

INTERVIEWPAGES moved back with my family last year. I have only recently begun to get to know the artistic community here. My first exhibition in Kuwait took place at Dar Al Funoon in May 2009, which was a great success. I was honored by people’s enthusiasm and their appreciation of my work. What sagely advice can you impart to budding, eager artists?

a perfectionist and I worked months to be skillful enough to write basic words with proficiency.

Follow your dreams, work hard and never compromise. Also, it is essential to know your field – open your mind, learn about its history and those who are shaping its future.

What does designing and art mean to you?

Who are your favorite designers or artists?

Design is a form of visual expression and communication, and is a part of our everyday life. I feel blessed to work in a field that I love and I am able to undertake projects that allow for artistic creativity.

I have many. Alan Fletcher, Paul Rand, Saul Bass to name a few. I also really admire the work of Reza Abidini and MehdiSaeedi both of whom bridge contemporary design with Arabic calligraphy.

How have you expanded your involvement in visual art? I am regularly evolving and immersing myself in different styles of creative expression. My field of study focused on print-based design, but I am also starting to explore other mediumssuch as 3D design, animation and new media. What is the source of your inspiration? I always believe that one should work in a field that they are passionate about. Mostly, I want to create designs that engage my audience and communicate a message. As a designer, my work has often been inspired by Islamic art and design. From Islamic patterns used in architecture to ancient styles of calligraphy, these references have enriched my work and provided me with a vast visual language to learn from. But my challenge as a designer is to bring new life to these ancient traditions, and create designs that are fresh, innovative and playful. How has the artist community in Kuwait welcomed your vision? I have lived out of Kuwait from a young ageand

Did your family offer encouragement in your pursuits? Yes, very much so. They have always supported me and encouraged me to follow my dreams. I am very grateful to them for all their support. In fact my first book ‘The Conference of the Birds’ was dedicated to them. Which one of your works provoked the biggest response of your career? I would definitely have to say that ‘The Conference of the Birds’ was the stepping-stone in my career as a designer. The book was published by Thames & Hudson, London, last year with a distribution to many parts the world and is now sold out of print. I have also done several tours for the book both locally and internationally as far as Saudi Arabia, Beijing, New York and London. I am very humbled with the support I have been receiving from various press and readers. What kind of artistic endeavors can we expect from you in the future? I am currently working on an installation piece for the Sultan Gallery here in Kuwait. They are organizing an exhibition to celebrate Kuwait’s 50th anniversary and have invited Kuwaiti artists to take part and produce new work for the exhibition. I am very excited to be working on this piece and explore a new medium, and I am looking forward to being a part of this event. What is the message you convey through your book? The project aims to celebrate Eastern culture in the West, creating a bridge between these two worlds

26

and spreading light upon some of the beautiful mythologies of the East. As a means of celebrating myheritage and culture, I wanted my work to reach beyond the realms of this traditional art form and communicate to an international audience. That is why I designed the system for reading Arabic calligraphy, enabling people from all cultures and backgrounds to understand the words used in the calligraphy, its composition and message.

His style, his prerogative, an impressionable experience Christina Pinto Art resonates with human emotions and offers a new visual life in a form that is both unique and passionate. One talented English painter, with a paint brush and a vivid imagination, bequeaths his own language to the art world. On November 2009, Kuwait saw one man’s personal, vibrant vision at the Dar El Cid, a very talented individual, Lewis Chapman. It was his first solo show in Kuwait His exhibitions are usually showcased at the Schoolroom Gallery in Alnmouth, England and at the Beauly Gallery in Scotland. Besides galleries, patrons of the art have called on him for private commissions. Since graduating from the Goldsmith’s college in London in 2005, his paintings have been featured in both solo and in group shows. His teaching qualifications from the University of Cambridge in 2007, enables him to share his love with students by conducting drawing and painting classes for small, eager batches. Lewis Chapman has been painting and living in both England and Kuwait, and his impression of the lifestyle differences is embodied in his work. It is his distinct experiences in his local surroundings that is transferred into color on canvas. In his words, explaining his creative process, “I am interested in how paint can be used to create images that filter reality towards a more essential experience. Each new painting uncovers a little more of this world and the more I paint the more I see." The man of artistic merit went on to delve into the journey of a painter, exclusive for CityPages.. When did you become self-aware of your own potential? How has your view of an artist changed over the course of your development? My drawing ability was recognized and encouraged when I was at primary school. I became known as the class artist, and when I moved from school to school I worked to maintain this identity. In the beginning, I was satisfied simply with drawing, but I’ve always been a painter, although I did not realize it until after I had left university. I only began to paint when I was lucky enough to be given the time to pursue my goal as a painter a few years ago in 2008. Now I am happy that my work is in such demand. I think an artist is first and foremost a practitioner. Visual art is a personal language, and it requires practice on the part of the artist to become fluent and articulate in their own language. Art, like any language, requires practice to transcend the mere materials from which it was made. One painting is not enough. The painter’s prerogative is to keep painting. What do you try to communicate through your work? My values. How has your experience living in Kuwait affected you as a person and artist? 28

www.citypageskuwait.com

Look closely at my paintings and you will find out. How has your work evolved over the years since your inception as an artist? It has got clearer… I can see further into the distance. I see each painting as a window or doorway into the same world. The more I paint, the more I see. How do you conceptualize your images? What is the focus of your inspiration that produces such a variety of artistic beauty? I like to paint spaces into which the viewer could go. I draw from observation, memories, imagination and I take videos that I play on a loop in my studio. How do the arts communities in each country differ? What do your opinion of the artist community in Kuwait? The artist community in Kuwait is growing, and some artists, such as Sami Mohammed and Farah Behbehani, have gained international acclaim. New galleries are appearing and they are attracting notable artists from around the region. In the UK, there is a far more established art scene with communities within communities. Competition is tough, but this is offset by the fact that there are far more opportunities for exposure.

Born in 1978, Khaled M. Alqarawi is a marketing professional currently employed at Zain in the Advertising and Promotions Unit within Marcomm. Muhammed Altaf What can you tell us about your education?

Khaled M. Alqarawi

I attended public schools till High School, after that I moved to the United States for college. In the beginning I majored in accounting, but during my freshmen/sophomore years I was drawn towards the school of Journalism and Mass Communication, then I gradually shifted to it from business school. I attended the University of Boulder, Colorado, and received my Arts and Science Degree from it before moving to Florida international University, Miami, where I obtained my degree in Advertising and Mass Communication with a minor in Photography and Film. How did your career develop after you graduated? After graduation I took a post as an intern in a non-profit organization in Miami called IFP (Independent Feature Project) where I was in charge of marketing and endorsing/assisting independent filmmakers to produce their films. They had a small creative house where I was employed as an assistant for the creative and account management team. When I returned to Kuwait I joined Alam Altassameem advertising company where I worked for a year as a media executive in the Bus Media Unit, and from there I moved to BPG (Bates Pan Gulf) as an Account Executive for approximately 4 years. Before joining Zain there was another transition period when I received an offer to join Al-Soor Fuel Marketing Company for a year as a senior marketing executive. To what kind of music do you listen? Currently I’m a big fan of lounge and jazz music. My friends like to tease me by calling my music “elevator music” so proudly I must say that elevator music is quite appealing! Can you tell us of any professional achievements to date? I like to believe that most of my professional achievements are related to my work and to my current position. I’ve participated in some great advertising and media campaigns, and I’ve seen them come to life. I must say that I am very proud of such achievements. Perhaps in the near future I will have more time to contribute back to the media society as, other than this, I think my greatest achievement is my experience. Who, or what, are your influences at work? Appreciation and endorsement! I love what I do, and I really get motivated when I work with people who are attached to what they do. Do you have a favourite travel destination? Yes! In the United States it’s possible to enjoy different climates and a variety of vistas throughout the year. It’s a great place to enjoy those rare and precious leave days. Are you an early bird or a night owl? A little bit of both, but I’m more of a night owl than I am an early bird. With age you tend to sleep earlier.

I lived in a very competitive environment among five brothers (yes... all boys) so gaining recognition was a constant challenge, so my childhood was full of great memories with my brothers and our little adventures/ challanges. The Saving Grace of Her Music Jameel Arif

Music has the power to comfort, provide solace and sometimes is a source of great strength. One notable example is that of Jasmine Kara, who turned to music at such a point in her life, when she needed support to escape an abusive relationship. It took one guitar to remind her that music had always been a source of great comfort and an outlet for her creative spirit. She left the relationship and her old life to pursue a career, travelling the world to carve out a living as a performing artist. It was when she arrived in New York and experienced its music scene; she had reached her destined place. It took many months of back-breaking work simply to be heard but ultimately it paid off with a contract with a new independent label Tri-Sound. Her debut album was recorded in 48 hours in the eminent Cosmo Studio in Stockholm Sweden for a 2010 release. The album called ‘Blues Ain’t Nothing But A Good Woman Gone Bad’ featured a collection of classic old school blues and R&B music sung by Jasmine, giving the old classics a powerful and passionate voice - hers. She has been touring ever since, documenting her whirlwind ride on her online blog. There is another compassionate side of this talented woman, on November 20, together with other artists, Jasmine participated in a concert to benefit children in need. It was held at the Royal Garden in Stockholm. Moreover, she even made a plea to the fans on her blog for the sake of the suffering. Truly, Jasmine Kara is a dynamic woman, whose voice reaches into the depths of the human soul. She has recognized the potency of music to revitalize life and give meaning to people who find themselves in dire circumstances. We all know that you were born in Iran, how long did you stay in Iran before moving to Sweden? My dad is from Iran and he came to Sweden 1979. My mom is born and raised in Sweden and so am I and my sister. But we have been in Iran twice and we love it. We feel we´re as much persian as swedish. At what age did you realize that you could sing? On my 11th birthday when I performed for the first time, in a talentcompetition in my hometown Örebro. I loved singing even before but never showed it to anyone. When I was on stage for the first time I realized that was what I really wanted to do. Can you share some child hood memories or early singing experiences? 34

www.citypageskuwait.com

It was a lot of music around us, my parents listened a lot to all the LP:s we had with Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles and Bob Marley for example. None of my parents are musicians, but they always loved dancing and singing/ playing music with us. My strongest childhood memories is all the times we were playing music, for example when my mom taught me my first two chords on guitar and when my sister played drums when I was singing. The music was the best thing I knew in life, even today it is. I read about the dark period in your life. Please share your feelings at that time. I met a boy and fell deeply in love with him. Even though we were so young it was a very serious relationship and it all started off good. After a while everything changed, partly because he was a drug addict but also because he was sick in his mind. It was a destructive relationship

with violence and hard words that thorned me down so much I didn´t want to live anymore. I tried to commit suicide, but ended up in the hospital and a few days after, they moved me to the psychiatric clinic and I was there for two months. It was a hell, but also the biggest turn in my life. On the department I were in my contact person came in to my room with a guitar one day and asked me if I knew how to play. I had no self confidence so I said no. I hadn´t been singing or playing for a year because he never allowed me. But after that person left I grabbed the guitar and started to play. And I couldn´t stop. I started crying and I was singing myself to sleep that night. It was like I was cleaning my soul. Suddenly the empty room was filled with hope and joy and I felt so happy. Of course it didn´t take one day to forget everything, it took years. But the music was my rescuer and my guide to my happiness I have today. Now I know

INTERVIEWPAGES he did. And two dreams became true! When will it be available in English? I don´t know yet, hopefully soon. What is your professional goal? To reach out my music and happiness to as many people as possible, all over the world. And just enjoy and have fun! Blues, soul and ska-music. My favorite song is Try my love again. Which is your favorite?

What would you like to achieve? Many albums, many books (I´m writing my 3rd one now) and make a difference and inspire people.

=). My favorite is "Fire" I think. I can´t live without music. What did you study at college? I studied music, but the best inspiration and knowledge came after school, when I went to New York for the first time. I learned almost everything I know about music there. Who are some of your favorite singers? I listen a lot to Aretha Franklin and muddy waters for example, but there´s so many favorites! So, you believe music changed your life? Definitely. I believe music also saved my life. Are you currently based in New York? Tell us about life in New York? I´m now based in Stockholm, but I´m going to New York a few times a year. New York is the best city I know and I can´t be without it too long. The life in New York is magic, music and laughs everywhere. People are nice and they´re helping each other. The atmosphere is amazing. Going to New York is something you have to do in your lifetime. What is behind the title of your debut album ”Blues Ain’t Nothing But A Good Woman Gone Bad”? When I am not on stage people can see me as a laughing and nice little girl. But when I´m singing Blues I take out all the bad in me and make it to happiness. I´m singing with a lot of attitude, something I don´t have when I´m not singing. What kind of songs did you include in this album? 36

www.citypageskuwait.com

How was the feeling when the album was launched? Indescribable. A huge dream coming true. Where all have you performed so far and how has been the response? I´ve been performing a lot in New York and around in Sweden and the response has been really good so far. But soon we´re ready for the world. Tell me about your autobiographical novel that was released along with the debut album? The label president asked me if I could write about myself and my background so we could send it to media, and I asked "How much do you want me to write?" and he said "As much as you can, please". I had already written the book so I came in to his office the next day and put it on his desk. He was very surprised and I never thought he would want to release it, but

When do you think you will start working on the next album? It´s already in process, we have been writing 25 songs and will write 10 more before we will start choose 15 of the best ones for the next album. Did you ever travel to Iran again? I haven´t been there since I was 10 years old, but can´t wait to go there again! Any message for your fans in Kuwait? I can´t wait to see y´all! Lots of love! Finally, any message for us at CityPages? I hope to see u soon and thanks for the nice interview =)

HIND AL-NAHEDH Integrated Marketing & Social Media Manager VIVA Telecom Kuwait

History of blogging in kuwait goes back to 2005 , we have noticed the interesting increase of blogging and bloggers in kuwait in 2010 ,the game of News exclusivity and Publishing has changed , different types of blogs started to shape , such as specialized cooking blogs , News update blogs , Fashion Blogs , even bloggers started auctioning items to be sold to readers , some blogs takes the form of serious complaints against parties or companies to send out a direct or indirect message . Kuwait has the highest most active Bloggers in the GCC with more than 500 kuwaiti bloggers until end of year...apparently we loved the effectiveness of blogging & the reach after all its changing the way of a Kuwaiti following the news ...its all online now Success in attracting and retaining readers is often influenced by a blog’s level of interactivity. Many readers are more active than passive and want to feel like they have a role in affecting a blog’s content, design, structure, and overall ongoing conversation. Posts shouldn’t be thought of as soliloquies, but as the beginnings of highly interactive discourses. For effective ways to keep your blog interactive and encourage your readers to come back for more, try reading and adapting these ten tips to fit your blog’s needs.

Blogging Maintenance posting trade-off with another blogger, writing for each other once a month to help generate more traffic for both of you. 3. Maintain Friendly Tone People love talking to their friends. If you want to encourage your readers to respond to content, you might consider being friendlier with your tone and adopting a more casual style. By “selling” less and being more approachable, you could increase feedback and readership. 4. Allow Guests to Express Themselves Enabling comments on your blog lets readers know that you welcome their feedback. Even if you have a lot of RSS readers who don’t visit your page, it’s important to leave the lines of communication as open as possible. As with guest posting, commenting on other blog posts can result in reciprocal favors for your own blog, so don’t hesitate to let others know what you think. Depending on your relationship with the blogger, you might even mention a popular post from your blog somewhere in your comment. 5. Ask for Feedback Ask readers to respond to your content. You can do this by asking visitors to submit article topics they would like to see on your blog, posting articles with interactive questions, or starting a weekly (or monthly) poll post. Once you’ve established a recurring poll day, readers will know when to stop by and respond so they can be included in your results and discussion.

submissions stack up, increasing your blog’s interactivity by leaps and bounds. 9. Write at Least One Article Series Writing a series can attract short-term readership from those who read one post and return for the next installment. If you can sink the hook this way, you might receive interesting feedback from new visitors and get some long-term readers who want to see more of the same. 10. Understand Readers’ Interactive Tendencies Don’t be offended or discouraged if you don’t notice drastically increased comment numbers on your blog. With RSS feeds, Twitter, and re-posting popularity, it’s more likely that your interactivity will increase in places you can’t monitor as easily as your blog. You can either hire a social media service to track threads related to your blog or simply trust that your efforts are increasing your blog’s interactivity and readership. some of my favourite blogs : - Buzberry.com ( Gadgets and Leaks ) - 13cups.com ( Cooking ) - 248am.com ( Latest trends and news) - Frankom ( News and updates ) - Kuwait unplugged ( politics) - estikana ( Girls talk ) - confashion kuwait ( about Fashion) - p0ach ( Fun , Fun , showbiz, trends)

6. Show the Good Intentions

How to Keep a fresh & interactive Blog ? 1. Encourage Guest Posts If you want an easy way to get more players involved in your conversation, encourage guest posts. Even though your readers are probably used to your style and enjoy reading your posts, interactivity can be improved by giving visitors the opportunity to read something different every once in a while. This also enables you to participate in conversations by posting comments on someone else’s content. To promote guest posts, include a separate tab for submissions or mention it on your contact page. 2. participate in Guest Posts for Other Blogs To get more activity on your blog, offer to write guest posts for others. Your byline on someone else’s blog may lead new visitors to your page, so take advantage of this opportunity. You might even arrange a guest

Let visitors see that you’re motivated to please them rather than use them. You can do this by offering free tips and advice, minimizing obvious commercial ventures on your blog, and responding when you do receive feedback. When your readers know that you’re invested in helping them with your blog, they’ll be more likely to participate when you include interactive opportunities. 7. Reward Your Readers

Favourite Blogs Aggregators :

For RSS feed subscribers or those who subscribe to your full content (if you offer different versions), consider offering an annual or biannual gift. You could give subscription discounts, free access to one of your eBooks, a small gift of merchandise if you run a commercial blog, gift certificates, coupons, access to special content, or anything else to let them know that you appreciate their loyalty. By doing this, you can both secure long-term readership and encourage increased interactivity.

What do you think who’s correct & how … Is there any solution to this problem??? Few centuries ago, a Law teacher came across a student who was willing to learn but was unable to pay the fee. The student struck a deal saying, “I will pay your fee the day I win my first case in the court”. Teacher agreed and proceeded with the law course. When the course was finished and teacher started pestering the student to pay up the fee, the student reminded him of the deal and pushed days. Fed up with this, the teacher decided to sue the student in the court of law and both of them decided to argue for themselves. The teacher put forward his argument saying: “If I win this case, as per the court of law, the student has to pay me as the case is about his non-payment of dues. And if I lose the case, student will still pay me because he would have won his first case. So either way I will have to get the money”. Equally brilliant student argued back saying: “If I win the case, as per the court of law, I don’t have to pay anything to the teacher as the case is about my non-payment of dues. And if I lose the case, I don’t have to pay him because I haven’t won my first case yet. So either way, I am not going to pay the teacher anything”. This is one of the greatest paradoxes ever recorded in history. Try and see if you have solution.

Average BMI Dr. Nazia Nausheen

T

his month, I would like to talk about BMI which is becoming a common term these days. BMI stands for Body Mass Index. BMI is also known as “Quetlet Index”. The BMI is one of the measure that a person can discover himself based on his weight and height. Most people believe that this measure is meant to find the fat content of their body but this is not the case. The BMI usually helps in finding what a person should weigh according to his height. Knowing this measure helps a person to know whether he is healthy enough or not. BMI is one of the tool which can be used most generally to find whether a person is overweight or underweight or obese. In the period of 18th century, Mr. Belgian polymath Adolphe Quetlet discovered this tool and therefore this tool is named after his name. The simple formula that involves in calculating the BMI(Body Mass Index) is body weight divided by the square of his height. This is nothing but the unit kg/m2 which generally is seen on transport vehicles to indicate the capacity of the vehicle. In Technical terms , this BMI can also be determined by BMI chart where BMI is a function of weight along horizontal axis and height along vertical axis and contour lines will be used for different values of BMI or different colors for different BMI categories. Generally, BMI average can differ according to the categories for which we are calculating it. For example, the average BMI for adult men will generally rise when he is becoming old but we can’t say that this true for all the time, as it may even decline after some time and again starts rising. But in general, the average BMI for men varies between 20 and 25 reaching approx 25. The average BMI defines the content of muscles and fat both. BMI can rise because of fat rise or muscles mass. But the one which rises because of muscle mass is always good as athletes have more average BMI because of their muscle mass. If we consider the same case, women generally will have more average BMI than men. BMI is only one of the indicator to assess the health risk. The men whose BMI crosses 25 should consult the doctor to find out the remedies to be followed and take precautionary steps accordingly. 40

www.citypageskuwait.com

Failing these may cause problems which may be prime or severe. Generally abdominal fat is more concerned than fat in general and this can be identified with the help of this average BMI. The more general checking of this measure may help in taking precautionary steps far more advance than later as we already know better to handle in the beginning than in the last stage.

The general Instructions to maintain or improve your average BMI are stated as below

For general information, the average BMI ranging between 18.5 to 25 is considered to be healthy and based on this itself, we can understand what is underweight and what is overweight and what is obese.

3. Always observe what you are eating and how you are eating

1. Always try to be active as this helps in burning in your calories thereby maintaining good average BMI 2. Always try to increase your resistance of diet

4. Know the situation of your eating. When you are under stress and starts eating then it will have a major impact on your average BMI level. Maintaining good level of average BMI helps in avoiding the diseases like hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and some types of cancers. Always keep progressing in maintaining your average BMI. Don’t calculate wrong calculation to find average BMI. Finally, consult your doctor to take necessary steps in case your average BMI is above the limit. Correct maintenance of average BMI is always a good sign for both physical and mental health.

SPORTSPAGES

Running the WRONG WAY Here are the top mistakes, on-runners make. (Even if your run speed is the same as your walk speed, you‘ll get a harder workout if you run.) 1-Running too fast It’s as much the up and down “bounce” of running that gives you the work out, as it is the speed. Even if you run speed is the same as your walk speed you will get a harder workout if you run. The trouble with setting off too quickly is that you tire easily and are ready to pack it in and head for the nearest café before you get halfway round the block. 2-Thinking it’s too hard It is hard, that’s partly because you need to build up your fitness, but partially because running is hard work. The best way to get fitter for running is to keep it up! If we challenge ourselves tough, that doesn’t mean you should stop. It means you should congratulate yourself for an awesome effort and keep at it. Running often feels harder as we have fewer distractions than other exercise forms in a gym, so we can focus more on the pain. 3-Not resting between runs If you go out again too soon after a run you remember the pain and not the sense

46

www.citypageskuwait.com

of achievement. The at least one rest day between run s (you can always do another type of exercise) so you head out on your next run feeling positive and rested. Just don’t leave it much longer than a week or you‘ll forget all the good feelings too and it will be harder to be motivated.

body is trying to decide whether we are running because something bad is about to happen. After a bit our body realizes that running is the bad thing and relaxes a little. So the first few minutes always feel like hard work. Bite the bullet and let yourself hate the first five minutes and see what it feels like after that.

4-Not wearing the right gear

6-Not recognizing improvements

It’s not about the flashiest gear, but a pair of comfy shoes, a good bra(if you are a female) and thin layers that don’t get in the way and can be shed slowly as you heat up, that will make your session a lot less uncomfortable. It can be trial and error, so work with what you have at home to get an idea of what works for you before you go out and spend lots of money on something that’s not right.

So many beginner runners say they feel like they are getting nowhere when in fact they have improved HEAPS! Make notes of how long you run for and how far you travel so in three months time you can see your progress.

5-Giving up too soon Did you know that in the first minutes of any exercise our body is going through a chemical reaction? Our

We are heading into an excellent weather now, so get out there and give it a go!

3D Cartoon Craziness Abu Meshal Villains. What would a good story be without them? The hero would have sparse to do. The heroine would be stuck at home baking pies and the storyline would be virtually non-existent!

thing in the universe. The characters develop as the story progresses and there are visible alterations to these characters that would otherwise be pigeonholed in a straightforward manner.

The alternative is also true as we come to see in Megamind. When the villain’s better half is unavailable, he decides to-take on the mantle himself. It is an incredible journey of self-discovery, wonderfully mixed with cartoon craziness and gags. If asked if I wanted to watch Megamind again I would answer “YES!”

The execution is commendable, the 3D effect enhances the experience and the witty dialogue makes the ticket price worth it. It is the kind of cartoon which the whole family can enjoy because the humor has no specific target group, it all just good innocent fun. The talent really shines through with Will Ferrell, Brad Pitt, Tina Fey, Jonah Hill and David Cross voicing the mayhem and giving the characters personality.

Last weekend, my family and I got the chance to catch the movie on the big screen, more exciting, it was in Full 3D! I have been looking forward to the movie since I had watched the trailer and the movie promised intrigue and excitement. It did not disappoint! You are almost right there beside Megamind as he engages in his wacky antics and commiserating at the lower points of his life. You cannot help feel sympathy for the poor guy who got such a bad start in life. There are a variety of interesting characters and they all assist in this remarkable blue-headed man’s journey to being loved, the most important

50

www.citypageskuwait.com

Avoiding cliché, the writing is simple and appropriate, and steers clear of sophomoric humor. A throw-away homage to The Karate Kid and spooks of Superman: the Movies are hilarious nods to popular culture.

Ferrell plays the brilliant but flawed antihero, and Pitt is his goody two shoes nemesis. Tina Fey is the damsel never in distress, while Hill is the vessel for villain Megamind’s plotting. David Cross lends excellent comic relief as Megamind’s piscine henchfish. Co–executive producer Ben Stiller sneaks in as Megamind’s erudite and personable alters ego. Special consideration should be given to the composer of the score, by Hans Zimmer and Lorne Balfe, because it lends the right background sound without overwhelming the on–screen action. The 3D effect was solid, contributing to the sense of depth and spaciousness without straining my eyes or brain. One scene had me squirming in my seat. I was thinking, “No Roxanne, don’t step off the edge!” All in all, a polished, well constructed piece of enter tainment for all. If the mood strikes for a fun and exhilarating 90 minutes in a dark room with your best buddies, head to your favorite cinema for a dose of…Megamind! Let his villainy entice you!!

Some are classic songs from past generations; others are more recently recorded; but all help to engender a really festive atmosphere as the nation prepares to celebrate. Mariah Carey's song 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' has recently been named the most-played Christmas hit of the past ten years in the UK. First released in 1994, Mariah’s single finished ahead of Wham!'s 'Last Christmas' in official figures released by record industry body PPL (which is the music licensing company which licenses the use of recorded music in the UK on behalf of 45,000 performers and 5,750 record companies). 'Fairytale Of New York' by The Pogues featuring Kirsty MacColl was the third most-played song in the survey, which monitors the number of times tracks are played on radio and in retail stores. Speaking about the results, PPL spokesman Jonathan Morrish said: "Music really helps define this time of year

- be it songs that radio broadcasts because that's what people want to hear or the songs retailers use in store because of their mood-enhancing power. Christmas without music would be unimaginable." The 80s has proved to be the most successfully festive decade for music recordings, with eight of the top twenty tracks coming from that period. The oldest recording is at number nine - White Christmas by Bing Crosby which was released in 1942. There is also a good balance of songs by legends such as Bing Crosby, Elton John, John Lennon and Paul McCartney, right through to singers such as Brenda Lee and Chris Rea, proving that all different kinds of performers can make a successful Christmas record. Band Aid’s famous ‘Do They Know Its Christmas?’ features in the top ten. The word ‘Christmas’ appears eleven times in twenty titles with its shortened version ‘Xmas’ appearing twice. We have printed the full Top Twenty list below ... is your favourite on there?

Books from this Year to Give as Christmas Gifts

Books make excellent Christmas gifts. Not only are they great for book lovers, but almost anyone will appreciate a nice, hardcover book that deals with a subject they enjoy. Here are some of the top books from 2010 to give as Christmas gifts, organized by what type of person would be happy to receive them. For the Jet Set Foodie

For Your Uncle Who is Up on Current Events

'Lunch in Paris' Elizabeth Bard

'War' Sebastian Junger

War by Sebastian Junger is a unique take on the battle in Afghanistan through the eyes of a journalist who lived among the young soldiers fighting in the Korengal Valley. From theNew York Times bestselling author of The Perfect Storm and Fire comes an unfiltered picture of what it means to be a soldier who is fighting in Afghanistan. War is disorienting and authentic and not in the least bit entertaining; but we think it is one of the best books of the year so far.

Lunch in Paris by Elizabeth Bard is the story of how the author, an American student living in London, fell in love with her French husband and his country's cuisine. While she writes a good bit about her experiences with food, there are plenty of life's other aspects. Love, in-laws, the health care system, making friends, and politics are among the topics Bard covers in her memoir. If you enjoy food and have either been to Paris or fantasize what it's like, this is a book for you. For Your Friend Who Loves Romantic Comedies

For the 'Harry Potter' Fan Who has Grown Up

'One Day' David Nicholls

'Mockingjay' Suzanne Collins

One Day by David Nicholls was an international bestseller before it was released in the U.S. in June. This straight-to-trade-paperback book was one of the hottest picks of the year, and it is likely to get hotter since it is being turned into a movie starring Jim Sturgess and Anne Hathaway. Although it is clever, well written and laugh out loud funny at times, don't be fooled -- this romance has some heavy moments.

Suzanne Collins boldly finishes the saga that began with a hunger, ignited into an inferno and, in the end, glows defiantly in the ashes. If you know a Hunger Games fan, they have surely read Mockingjay by now. But there are still plenty of young adults and grown ups who haven't read these fantastic books. Our reviewer devoured all three in a matter of days, so go ahead and buy the whole trilogy for your Harry Potter or Twilightloving friend who will love the latest young adult sensation.

For Your Literary Aunt

For Your Book Club Pal

'Freedom' Jonathan Franzen

Franzen has a history of experiencing backlash for his success. In 2001, his debut novel,The Corrections, was a literary and commercial sensation that was chosen for Oprah's Book Club, but when the author expressed something less than delight at the prospect of an Oprah logo on his novel, the invitation was rescinded. In 2010, Oprah and Franzen seem to have made amends -- Freedom was chosen as her 2010 book club pick, only one in a long list of accolades the novel received. Franzen was still not without controversy. This time around, bestselling author Jodi Picoult raised a fuss after the New York Times raved aboutFreedom, complaining that the paper focused too much attention on white, male writers. These "scandals" make for interesting gossip, but here's the real question: are his books good? The answer: Yes. Freedom is one of the books from 2010 that should not be missed.

'Room' Emma Donoghue

Award-winning author Emma Donoghue's latest book, Room, is a unique and amazing story about a boy's day-to-day experience living in a small, windowless room with his mother. The 11' x 11' space between the walls of the room are actually all the boy knows because he was born there and has never left. Room will horrify, surprise, sadden, and ultimately delight you. Addictive from the start, readers of all sorts won't want to put Room down. For a Stephen King Fan

The Passage' Justin Cronin

What is The Passage? It is a new standard for provocative and arresting apocalyptic literature, one of the must-read books of 2010. The Passage is the pinnacle of a decade of books fascinated with bloodsuckers & the end of the world. Intrigued?

There is a new product that makes recording music and audio files easier than ever – MiCorder. Sun + Flower = Lunchbox!

The Sunflower Lunchbox is a cute solar-powered appliance that heats and cools food items at the same time. A collapsible petals-like contraption (laced with solar cells) is used to trap the solar energy, which is then stored in an internal battery. With the simple touch of a button, you can then heat or cool down the contents within the individual boxes. It’s an ideal lunchbox for those fussy about eating piping hot food and solid cold drinks! How it works: • When the lunch box is closed, the compartments are connected to an electrical circuit through three lids for heating and cooling at the same time or separately, depending on the user’s wishes. • Once opened, the electrical circuit is broken allowing you to take out the compartments individually and eat! • Every pan has its own display through which you can control the heating or cooling your food.

This project goes by the name °ßWet ? No Way.°® – or “Wet? No way.” and it’s designed by Huang Tai-Shun. What this project consists of is a fold down (and up) package that you use once you’ve been out in a rainstorm with your fold-down umbrella and now have to enter the office or any other place where you’re probably not going to have the opportunity to set the umbrella out to dry it off. What does this package do? First of all, it’s tiny, then it folds out to be a tube the size of your folded-up umbrella. Place your wet umbrella inside, snap on the cover, and wowie!

Best iPod Nano Watch Strap?

Organic Watch of Simplicity

Designer Fatih Baltas has a little something for your wrist – a single (or combination of) color and a simple function – telling time in red, blue, white, green, yellow, pink, brown, black, all in the brightness and gloss to gloss the ages. This is the Saat watch. Bursting colors and hi-poly lines yell modernity quite loudly. An extremely simple design, stark, blasting, and lovely. Makes you feel like you’re adding a piece to your body rather than covering a bit of it up.

There are several other companies making watch straps for Apple’s latest iPod Nano but the NanoWatch is by far my favorite. The designers have been working feverishly since the Nano (6G) made its debut and although technically late in the game, I believed it paid off. The back of the strap is debossed to perfectly level the Nano’s built-in clip. It’s the only company I know of that makes their straps out of eco-friendly silicon – that’s no nickel or phthalater. It’s also the only company who makes silicon to perfectly match the Nano’s color range.

Casio Adds Four High Brightness Projectors to Green Slim Line

A Rocky Clock

What you’re about to see is the Octopus clock by Sebastian Oeyen of Arista Design. It’s constructed of polyester resin and anodized aluminum. It is not the sort of clock to sit still, certainly if you’re rocking the surface it’s sitting on, but that’s the idea! The concept for this idea, says Oeyen, comes from time and dynamism. Time, he says, is not static, and thusly, neither is this clock. It moves like a rocking chair and stands by equilibrium. Often we share with you here at Yanko Design projects that are not yet created, conceptual and someday ready they will be. That’s not the case here though, all you gift givers, as Oeyen not only has them for sale, he’s his own salesman. Take a walk over to his site and ask for more info!

X-BOW SUPERLIGHT

SCOOTER FROM MINI

ULTIMATE PERFORMANCE ON AND OFF THE RACE TRACK... The KTM X-Bow Superlight is one of the variants of the KTM X-Bow model range. As the name suggests the Superlight is the lightest model in the range - but not by much, the base model KTM X-Bow is just 5 kg (11 lbs) heavier. Although the Superlight is a full 40 kg (88 lbs) lighter than the GT4 version. KTM presents Formula 1 technol¬ogy in a seriesproduction car for the very first time. The X-BOW combines impressive perfor¬mance, state of the art engineering and the highest safety-standards with the low¬est consumption and emission values. The philosophy of KTM is embodied not only by the X-BOW GT4, but also by the entrylevel racecar named “Clubsport”. Particularly when it comes to safety, it is in no way inferior to its “big brother” thanks to the racing-approved monocoque, but at the same time it is also street-homologated: It therefore bridges the gap between unfor¬gettable zigzags on tight country roads and the thrilling track day battle against the clock.

ELECTRIC-POWERED SCOOTER CONCEPT FROM MINI. MINI has unveiled retro-futuristic conceptu¬al model of electric-powered scooter called MINI E Scooter Concept. This concept shares traditional MINI design: these are typical large speedometers and oval mir¬rors, square rear lights and chrome inserts. There will be possibility to store power on lithium-ion batteries, use electric mo¬tors built into the rear wheels, and accept charge via retractable leads in the back. If this concept will get positive feedback from public and experts at the 2010 Paris Motor Show the mass production of MINI Scooter will not take long.

Originally, KTM planned a production of 500 units per year, however, the company has increased production to 1,000 cars a year. As the X-BOW Superlight model, this unique sportscar from KTM displays its motorsport-derived technology for all to see.

Fearful Little Duck Christina Pinto

T

here was once a little duck who was very happy. He loved his home. It was filled with so many wonderful places to play. There were rocks to jump off. Leaves to run through and they made little crack crack noises when he went over them. Then, one day his mother told him they had to go across the pond. Little duck did not like the pond. It was far too different. The leaves from the trees next to the pond were huge. They cast shadows over the pond. They looked like they were going to grab him. His mother pushed him to go. “Come, we have to go across the pond, little duck!” Mother told him very, very gently. She understood how scary it could be for the little duck. It was a whole new place and new was different. For little ducks that were so comfortable in their world, new was scary! She tried to push little duck to understand that there was a better place across the pond. He just had to take the first leap into the pond, then many wonderful things could happen to him. He would be able to swim with his friends. He would be able to be self-reliant on food. So she kept pushing him every day, closer to the edge of the pond. But little duck would shake his yellow head, stamp his webbed feet and quack out a big ‘NO’. The leaves were too scary, he said one day. Then, the water was too cold. It was cold as ice. There is something lurking under the water. He could see it with his little duck eyes. There were small creatures under the water that looked up at him. They wore masks of different colors and had mean stares.

swim? What if I sink?” He quacked twenty miles a minute. He was very very scared of what he had to do. Mother duck nuzzled his neck gently. She patted him on the head. “But you have to go into the pond. You are a duck! And ducks like water.” she encouraged,“ and we like to splash. We get our food from the pond. Because you are a young duck, the world is scary, but believe me once you try, it will not be so scary.” Little Duck looked into his mothers big, loving, assuring eyes and decided that he would take one step into the lake. Only one and pray nothing would happen. Little duck placed one foot into lake. The water was cold. The leaves overhead came to collect him. He was frightened. “Go on little duck!” Mother Duck encouraged. He placed both feet into the pond. It felt nice! The water lapping on his skin was like a massage. He paddled his little feet and moved away from the pond’s edge. The leaves reached for him, waving, welcoming the newest addition. The other little ducks popped out to say, Hi! Little duck paddled harder and swam further out. This world was fun! He said goodbye to his fear and welcomed happiness. ------------ Moral of the story -----------Trust in your parents and believe in them when they encourage you to try new things. Often what was once scary can actually be fun and exciting! ------------ Words of the Month -----------Self-reliant – to be able to do things for oneself and not depend so much on others.

Because of the design’s simple lines and ability to move from shape to shape while still being unmistakably Balenciaga, a prospective customer can see in it whatever she would like to see, and Nicolas Ghesquiere & Co. have taken to releasing it in every color, material and silhouette possible. With our own views closer and closer to vegetarian we can’t advise you to wear natural fur but who are we to forbid that to you? However, we do believe that both natural and artificial fur looks chic and beautiful. And there is no chance we would deny the fact it’s very warm that means it’s perfect for winter. So, no matter what you think about this trend it is still a trend. And here we will show you how you can wear it. It would be fair to start from Chanel as Karl Lagerfeld literally based hisFall/ Winter 2010/ 2011 range on fur. He created fur coats and pants, skirts and hats, high boots and gloves. If he used other materials he still put fur into the garments. Fur on sleeves, collars and handbags.

Fur is a hot trend for the current season. At least one third of designers used it in their Fall/ Winter 2010/ 2011collections. Natural fur, artificial fur, red fur, green fur, fur outfits or fur details – all these are top trendy. And if you like fur it’s high time you got a few garments made of it.

Marc Jacobs wasn’t as fur generous but he abounded his designs with fur, too. Having focused on collars and lower sleeves Marc did a great job to integrate the hot trend into his collection.

Most deigners used fur to add luxury to their creations. Nina Ricci is a good example of this. The garments that looked great on their own turned into works of art when fur was attached to those.

Dolce & Gabbana

Chanel

Etro used various colors of fur in their Fall/ Winter 2010/ 2011 range and each looked interesting. Speaking about colors we should mention Anna Sui who is famous for designing casual dresses of vibrant tones. For her Fall/ Winter 2010/ 2011 collection she used orange, black, red, green and other hues of fur.

Valentino for GAP: first look The designer-for-chainstore collaboration concept seems to be having a (somewhat premature) revival. Not that it ever went away - but that it's had a burst of new-found vigor. First Lanvin for H&M hit stores; now it's the Emperor himself Valentino with a collection for GAP. The idea is the same. A lower-quality, mass produced take on designer items bringing them to a wider consumer base. Yet Valentino's collection feels a little different. We've not seen the dumbed-down versions of Valentino's sweeping evening gowns that we might have expected. Rather it's a fresh approach of using staple GAP elements like heavyweight cotton in kahki and army green, cargo pants, parkas and cotton basics - but reinterpreted with Valentino's signature ruffles. The end result is yet more of the military trend; but at that a fresh, feminine take that can be used to extend the trend's lifespan a little longer

Double hair knot

Shoe Trends To always stay in a rushing stream of fashion one needs to know thetrends. Taking into account the fact shoes are no less important than garments it is esential to know the shoe trends for the upcoming season – Fall/ Winter 2010/ 2011. Fur boots

Winter is cold in majority of countries around the globe, so fur boots will certainly become a hit. No girl will ever refuse to wear stylish boots like Chanel or Lanvin’s.

When it comes to the year's fashion trends a lot of 2011 will focus on embellished, quality details - it won't be exactly the same for 2011 hairstyles, however. Quality, yes. Embellishment, not always. 2011 won't be a year in which hair trends are based around adornments and accessories - yes, there'll be headbands, but there'll be a larger push towards styles that are au naturel. And amongst those styles will be the double hair knot. --------- How to style it --------Though a hairstyle suited to the entire year, the style of double hair knot you're seeing in the pictures are best suited to spring / summer 2011. Styled by Orlando Pita for the Michael Kors catwalk, the summer influence comes courtesy of a desire to have fuse urban hairstyle with the feel that its wearer has "been out at the beach all day." To capture the summer interpretation of the double hair knot: 1. First, spritz the hair all over with a sea-salt spray (Orlando Pita used Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray) 2. Next, scrunch the hair into bunches while drying to add waves and texture 3. Pull a thick section of hair out at the front, sweeping it into a deep side part 4. Finally, take back two sections of hair and tie into a knot - then again into a double knot For a take on the style that is suited to autumn / fall or winter, play down the beachy-ness by making the hair smoother and a little less textured. Try replacing the sea-spray with a volumizer and keeping the hair in place with a little hairspray.

Laced-up boots

Fall/ Winter 2010/ 2011 Shoes with buckles

Wedges

‘The more buckles the better’ sounds the slogan for Fall/ Winter 2010/ 2011 season. Buckles look interesting and provide great support and fixation for the foot. However, they bring the same problem as laces – it takes time to pull them off.

The popularity of wedges has already faded but their practicality still makes designers pay attention to such kind of shoes. If you are a fan of this shoe trend, go ahead and purchase one more pair of pretty wedges.

Stiletto shoes

Thigh-high boots were a hugefootwear trend last season. We have seen celebrities and ordinary girls wearing these everywhere. And luckily such boots are going to be still hot for Fall/ Winter 2010/ 2011, too.

Thigh-high boots

Stilettos aren’t always easy to sport but the fact they look gorgeous is undeniable. That is why if you feel you can walk on super tiny heels this shoe trend is everything you might want. Both shoes and boots can come with spike heels. They look feminine and totally stylish.

Chunky heels

Although stilettos look glamorous chunky heels are much more comfortable. And plenty of women prefer being safe and comfy rather than sexy and scared of falling down. So, chunky heel is one more shoe trend for Fall/ Winter 2010/ 2011 season.

High heel + High platform

This shoe trend isn’t for girls who love looking womanly. But it does look chic and intriguing.

Kuwait, 29 November 2010: AppsArabia, the Middle East’s first and only investment fund created with the sole purpose of developing apps for the region, today announces that its first app, Kalimat, a fun and collaborative iPhone game, has been completed and will be available for download from the App Store in mid December. Kalimat, a highly addictive multiplayer word game with a difference, has two different game play styles so players can challenge friends in local “pass & play” mode or they can challenge friends or random players via the internet.

Designed specifically for the iPhone, the launch of Kalimat will coincide with an online video campaign, focusing on the story of the two central characters Kali and Mat over several episodes. Aston Martin Vantage GT4 Revised for 2011 Aston Martin Racing launched a new Vantage GT4 for 2011. The new V8 engine racing car takes design inspiration from Aston Martin’s V12 Vantage road car, giving it enhanced aerodynamics and increased downforce. It also has a remapped 4.7 litre engine offering increased levels of power and torque. As with the current 4.7 litre Vantage GT4, which made its race debut in 2009, the 2011 car is closely based on the V8 Vantage road car with key attributes being carried over including the aluminium chassis, base engine and suspension design. In addition to the engine and aero upgrades, competitors can, for the first time, choose a race-developed Bosch ABS and traction control system. This system has been specifically optimised by Bosch Motorsport for the Vantage GT4 to provide race-enhanced performance in both wet and dry conditions.

The Vantage GT4’s new splitter increases downforce at the front of the car, as well as channelling cooling air to the brakes and radiator. At the rear, the car gains the V12’s larger boot ‘flip’. This works together with a new

carbon fibre diffuser and rear underfloor, which create an area of low pressure under the rear of the car, to increase downforce. The redesigned underfloor also channels more air through a new rear-mounted high capacity transmission oil cooler. Aston Martin Racing has built and sold more than 80 Vantage GT4s to customers around the world in the last two years and it has become the most successful car in its class. In 2010, it won the European GT4 Cup as well as the GT4 class at the Dubai 24 Hours, the Nürburgring 24 Hours and the Spa 24 hours. The car also has its own one-make series, the Aston Martin GT4 Challenge of Great Britain, which was won in its inaugural year by Chris and Ant Scragg. The new Vantage GT4 will be eligible for this Challenge, as well as the European GT4 Cup and all other series with a GT4 class.
